Customer Reviews:
Excellent Series..... except........2007-07-08
Of course it's an overview and some issues are too briefly treated. My only real problem is the standard glossing over of the reason for Paul Revere's ride and the cause for the Battles of Lexington and Concord. You don't send that many elite troops, the Light and Grenadier companies, nearly 20 miles into the countryside on foot in the 18th century to capture a few key rebel leaders: you send your dragoons.
The main goal of the march was the seizure of the miltia's powder stores and one small 3 pounder cannon held in common at Concord. Most of the colonists had some powder in hand but probably only enough for about 20-25 shots. As the colonies lacked any significant domestic gunpowder production, the real prize of the march was that gunpowder in Concord . With it's seizure, the rebels would soon have only clubbed muskets for fighting. A strategy whose wisdom and success could be seen two months later when at Bunker Hill the rebels held against the British but were finally overrun with the bayonet after they ran out of powder. And when Knox arrived with the cannon from Ticonderoga, Washington still did not have enough powder to serve the guns, thus he bluffed the British out of Boston with cannon he could not fire in March of 1776.
More than coincidentally the Colonial Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunsmore, seized Virginia's common powder stores at Williamsburg Magazine on April 21st 1775, exactly two days after the assault on Concord: indicating a probable Crown strategy to execute two nearly simultaneous and identical actions and disarm two of the more problematic colonies.
So the actual final triggering of armed conflict in the Revolution was not the Stamp Act, Tea Act, or the Intolerable Acts but was a British attempt at gun control! But I imagine due to the sensitive nature of that controversial issue it's just too much to expect anyone to actually acknowledge it in even such an excellent documentary as this.
In any event, this set is well worth the money.
The Best Revolution ??.......2007-07-06
I've watched countless documentaries about The Revolutionary War and this is one of, if not the best I've seen. It is a comphrehensive look at the war, its causes, battles and political struggles starting with the Stamp Act in 1765 and ending with Washington taking the oath of office in 1789 as the first President. Historian and Author comments provide insight and facts that help put the viewer in the mind set and feel of this conflict. Some history buffs will notice inaccuracies in uniforms and weapons but it does not take away from the overall quality of information presented. I highly recommended this DVD set.
Informative and Entertaining.......2007-07-05
I particularly liked the emphasis on the political aspects of the Revolution, in addition to the military. And the series focused on events often left out or shortened in documentaries, such as the southern battles. I would encourage history teachers to use this series in their classrooms.
The last two segments might have been skipped, since they didn't offer any new information. But they provided a recap of the series.
Multi-dimensional examination of the war.......2007-02-04
A great examination of the American Revolutionary War by the History Channel. Includes interviews with historians, battlefield maps and examinations of troop movements, letters from the battlefields, and actor portrayals of battles and historical figures.
The Revolution starts out with the examinations of the cause of the revolution, such as colonial resentment of taxes levied after the Seven Years' War without any representation. It follows this through the forging of the Declaration of Independence and the battles of the Revolutionary War. It finishes up with the problems facing the nation after the war.
I don't think I had a good enough realization in school with how hard times were for these soldiers as they waged war. This video goes into detail with the troubled supply lines that plagued Washington's army, the heavy desertion and mutiny (which Washington clamped down on with some extraordinary tactics), and the many failed battles that occured in the first few years of the Revolutionary War. It covers internal conflicts between such characters as Horatio Gates and George Washington.
Also discussed are Benjamin Franklin's efforts in France to recruit the French navy and John Paul Jone's foray into Britain and Ireland.
The first half of the series covers the battles in the north and the remaining few episodes discuss how the battles move south into Savannah, the back woods of the Carolinas, and finally Yorktown.
One problem with the series is that they tend to recycle the interviews and footage throughout.
US history books tend to lionize the founding fathers, but this series (and books such as the Founding Brothers) show how none of these people was perfect, and shows their faults as well as their strengths. I came away with this series (which I downloaded from iTunes, BTW) with a much better understanding of the Revolutionary War.
Great Idea, Great Production....Awful DVD Quality.......2007-01-03
I was excited to order this 13 part series after catching part of it on the History Channel. Upon receiving it however and watching the 1st installment, my personal opinion is that the video quality and DVD production is very poor. I don't understand why they would shoot this is widescreen but show it in a funky letterbox type aspect. There are white dotted lines across the top of the screen that are very distracting. For those of you who understand video, I would rate this about the quality of a VCD. The sound is okay. While I would have given this series 5 stars, the poor quality of the DVD brings the purchase down to a 3 for me. Note to History Channel: Upgrade your technology.

Product Description
Pursuit of Honor is the most important documentary ever produced about George Washington. Principle photography began in January 2005 and wrapped in June 2006. In the span of 16 months, Paladin accumulated about 50 hours of raw footage in several of America's most precious Colonial-era sites. We walked in the footsteps of Washington, shooting in the Allegheny National Forest, at the Hall of Burgesses, Governor's Palace, and Raleigh Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, inside the historic Wren Building at the College of William & Mary, at the Carlyle House in Alexandria, Virginia, and in the mansion and across acres of lands at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens. a feature documentary motion picture about George Washington, began in January 2005, with production progressing throughout the year at locations in several states.
Pursuit of Honor: The Rise of George Washington explores two dynamic themes: Washington's belief in Providence, and indeed the incredible protection of higher powers that allowed Washington to escape near-death experiences; and the growth of character of a man who shed the shallow vanity of youth in pursuit of honor. George Washington made himself into a man capable of founding the most powerful nation in the world.
In Pursuit of Honor we explore his early military career in the French & Indian War and understand how these experiences shaped his approach to the Revolution. We see how his management of Mount Vernon prepared him to administer the Continental Army. Ours is an accessible George Washington not the cold and aloof character portrayed time and again in documentaries produced by PBS or the History Channel.
Customer Reviews:
Very good DVD on George Washington.......2007-02-27
Paladin scores again with the final installment in its trilogy on George Washington! (see my reviews of _ George Washington's First War: The Battles for Fort Duquesne_ and _When the Forest Ran Red_) This installment shows us GW's life from the end of the French and Indian War to the Revolution. The coverage is quite deep and not not superficial in the least. However, since it covers the interwar years, we don't get as much 'shoot em up' battles scenes that we got in the first two installments. Nevertheless, this DVD examines how GW grew during those years, what forces played on him to become a revolutionary, and how he influenced those around him. This is perhaps the most important chapter leading up to his break with the Mother Country. You won't want to miss this important, in-depth DVD on George Washington.
To continue the saga, you might want to watch _The History Channel Presents Washington the Warrior_, which covers GW's time as general in the Revolution.
George Washington at his Finest.......2006-11-14
This movie was the best in the trilogy(When the Forest Ran Red & GW's First War).I especially enjoyed the realistic battle footage of Braddock's Defeat and Pontiac's War.

Product Description
Subtle Voices: Cries from Colombia is a film that highlights the complicated struggles of the Colombian people. From the capital city of Bogota and the corruption of Medellin, to the rural landscape of Apartado, follow documentary filmaker Andrew Patterson as he takes first hand accounts directly from the mouths of those tortured and abused by armed actors in the violent civil war that has been raging in Colombia for over fifty years.
Customer Reviews:
Honest documentary.......2007-02-14
This is a low budget documentary, but I do feel it gets the message across. I guess Mr. Rico has never seen the film, Super Size Me or any other non-Discovery channel documentary since he was expecting it to be filmed in High Def. I also do not think Mr. Patterson's intention was to "make money off you" since he was on a mission trip. Overall, I enjoyed the film and the glimpses of Latin America it provides.
Low Budget.......2006-12-19
I was very disappointed with the quality (audio and visual) of the documentary, particularly considering the purchase price. First, the interviewer's technique is not very skilled, and each individual interviewed is not asked important follow up questions. Second, the audio and picture quality is akin to the quality that can be obtained using a $250 (or less) camcorder purchased (not on sale) from your neighborhood electronics store. Third, there is no cohesive theme between the interviews, and those interviewed tend to say the same thing. Although the documentary deals with a particular subject, those selected to be interviewed should have been veted. In short, its worth about $5. I didn't learn anything new about Colombia or the goings on in the country. Honestly, I've traveled throughout Latin America, and I have taken better videos (including audio quality) and come into contact with more interesting people (survivors of death squads [i.e. cleansing campaigns] and economic/ political refugees) during my Latin America travels. Hey, maybe I should make a documentary too!
I don't want to sound harsh, but the price doesn't match the quality, which is a very big bummer. There's nothing wrong with making a quick buck, as Patterson is obviously very adept at doing (particularly since he got me for $20 of my hard earned money), but the other reviews are GREATLY INFLATED. Oh yeah, I also should have taken note that the only other reviewer shares that same last name as the documentary's producer/star/ narrator "Patterson". I don't want to sound jaded, but having read that review and watched the movie, I suspect that the other reviewer HAS to be related to the documentary's creator. You've heard of the saying "that he/she has a face that only a mother could love". . . well this is a documentary that only a realtive could love.
Cogent & Profound.......2006-01-22
Imagine a documentary film without an axe to grind. Let the camera do the story-telling. That's what Andrew Patterson has accomplished in "Subtle Voices." He's not out to tackle the American government, the drug cartels of Columbia, or a leftist group think. Subtle Voices represents a wholistic series of interviews to raise awareness and ask difficult questions about an even more difficult human quagmire in Columbia. Some want a diatribe to support the current Columbian government, others want a sermon against US misguided interventionism. Patterson does not provide either in this poignant documentary. Instead he heightens awareness, provokes mind and conscience, and does so with a cogent and profound collage of Columbian images. Indeed, subtle voices, cries from Columbia.

Customer Reviews:
Are You Kidding Me?.......2005-03-04
This easily was the most useless video I have ever ordered. I teach 3rd grade and thought it would be educational. It has all the makings of a middle school home history project set to video tape. I'm sure the kids, who actually made this, and their families think it's cute, but, believe me, it's totally boring and idiotic. To see a boy portray Paul Revere running around his backyard with a stick horse, is just a small indication of the rest of the quality of this video.
Too silly to be taken seriously........2004-06-10
I know it's made for "kids" but using kindergarteners and some obvious first graders (missing teeth) to tell the story of the American Revolution seems silly. I was hoping to see/hear the story of the Revolution in simple terms for kids but not to have the kids as actors. I wanted to use it with my 3rd and 4th grade ESL students. Now that I own it, I'll probably try it, and maybe they will enjoy it more than I did.

Customer Reviews:
Trails of George Washington Slept Here.......2005-08-28
If you expect to see the entire Revolutionary War from the seat of a bicycle, you might be disappointed. But if you cycle trails around Philadelphia without knowing a few facts about the vital routes of travel during the late 1700's, the the DVD could provide some information that will help you enjoy the rides.
The program begins with a character in front of the actual building where the First Continental Congress convened. The building still exists and that in itself is amazing. Although the cycling trail from Philadelphia to Valley Forge did not actually exist back during the Revolution, many landmarks do remain that George Washington might recognize if he were alive today. He did write in his journals specifically about houses in Manayunk. Serious cyclists probably pass those homes and do not realize the significance.
General Lafayette escaped from the Battle of Barren Hill along the river valley where the cycling path now runs. Who would know that ?
The DVD also visits Lexington and Concord, as well at Washington's Crossing near Trenton.
The major battle reenactment is at Brandywine. It is quite a spectacle.
No, it is not as compehensive at the book, 1776, by David McCollough, but it does show what the cycling trails are like in the areas along the Delaware River.
Get off your bicycle........2004-12-16
These are responses from 8th grade students who viewed this film:
More biking silently than giving information; insufficient background information; boring;no enthusiasm in presentation; confusing because she stated she was going one place and landed up in another!!! Do not recommend due to minimal amount of information and because it did not hold students' attention.
Fun and Gun.......2004-10-03
This DVD was fun because it shows where George Washington went during the Revolutionary War. I would like to see more battles.
Maybe the next DVD will have more battles.
