Raised in Poland and witnessing the havoc intense nationalism wreaked on humanity in World War II, Pope John Paul II has since become the hand of healing and peace to nearly every country left desperate in its aftermath. Pope John Paul II: The Conscience of the World celebrates the Pope's 20th anniversary as the world's most compassionate leader by documenting his life, his actions, and his worship. From the fall of Communism in the U.S.S.R. to his visit with Fidel Castro of Cuba in 1998, this poet, actor, and peacemaker has fearlessly violated borders and regimes with his gospel of human rights and endeared himself to the hearts of Catholics and political leaders alike. Watch this video and discover why. --Courtney Kehn

Whether your intellect is completely engaged or passively detached, any viewing of Naqoyqatsi is likely to provoke a fascinating response. You can view it as a magnificent, visually stimulating music video (as critic Roger Ebert suggested you should), or in context as the third and most unsettling film in director Godfrey Reggio's "qatsi" trilogy, each titled from the Hopi language, and preceded by Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi ("Life out of Balance" and "Life in Transformation," respectively). "Life as War" is the translation of this film's title, and Reggio's theme is not one of conventional warfare, but of daily life as warfare in the age of rapidly evolving technology. The entire trilogy views humankind as a blight on the pristine nature of Earth, but here the theme is taken to its inevitable extreme: a constant flow of new and archival images--manipulated with solarization, digital enhancements, thermal effects, 2-D and 3-D animation, etc.--combine to convey athletic and military regimentation, culminating in the doomsday flowering of missiles, rockets, and all varieties of nuclear weaponry. The cumulative effect, when combined with Philip Glass's mesmerizing score (his best of the trilogy, with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma) is one of doom-laden portent, but, as Stephen Holden observed in the New York Times, the film is also arrestingly beautiful as it weaves its hypnotic, apocalyptic spell. For those who wish to delve further, Reggio, Glass, and editor/visual designer Jon Kane provide valuable insight in a bonus panel discussion. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Miramax Home Entertainment and Oscar(R)-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Best Director, TRAFFIC, 2000) present NAQOYQATSI ("Life As War"), from filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, in collaboration with composer Phillip Glass, whose original score features renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In this cinematic concert -- the concluding film of the Qatsi Trilogy preceded by the critically acclaimed KOYAANISQATSI ("Life Out Of Balance"), and POWAQQATSI ("Life In Transformation") -- mesmerizing images reanimated from everyday reality, then visually altered with state-of-the-art digital techniques, chronicle the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic, and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and spectacle, tragedy and hope, fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music, giving rise to a unique artistic experience that reflects Reggio's visions of a brave new globalized world.

2 out of 5 stars Music video or feature film?.......2007-05-18

Having read some other reviews here, I have to agree with their basic criticism. Then again, perhaps this film should not so much be critisised as a feature film, but as a music video, or in fact a video installation that took the wrong door. Watching this as a feature film is unbearable for anyone with a sense of plot. Also, it has so many flashy effects that there should be a seizure warning on the package. But the film certainly goes well as a background for Phil Glass' very enjoyable music, or for running it in the background during a weird, geeky party you are having in an abandoned Detroit warehouse...

1 out of 5 stars very, very disappointing... and bad.......2007-01-23

The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.

Naqoyaqaatsi, to quote some other reviewers, is just 'a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing'... 'all quite forgettable'... except that the feeling of disillusionment and disappointment is hard to forget... The absence of Ron Fricke and his incredible cinematography that mad the other films so great stops this from even being interesting.
Don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-01-12

If you have not watched this yet and have any inclination to, PLEASE DO. It is not a "movie with a plot" so to speak, but a film/documentation of society and culture. I love it. (But watch Kooyanisqatsi first. ) In comparison, it is what Kooyannisqatsi would have been had it been made 20 years later. I think it's brilliant.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing end to the series.......2006-12-13

The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic, and features what is possibly the best score Philip Glass ever wrote for anything.

The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.

This third installment offers none of the thought-provoking imagery of the first two films. It's just a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing, and all quite forgettable. I wonder what went wrong?

Don't waste your time.

2 out of 5 stars Botched Opportunity.......2006-12-02

First, let me say, I LOVE Koyaanisqatsi, the original film in this trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi is a true visual poem that tells a straight forward story about what we humans are doing to the earth.
The second film in the trilogy, Powaqqatsi, wasn't as good as the first but it was still fairly understandable as a critique of how humans exploit one another.
Naqoyqatsi could have been the best in the series since it had ample opportunity to show us the horrors of war. Instead, it comes off as a sophomoric exercise in video experimentation, nothing more. If not for Philip Glass' music, I would not have given this film any rating at all.
I write this criticism in hopes that Godfrey Reggio sees it. He should pull this travesty off the market and reshoot the entire film with stronger footage showing us, as clearly as he did with "Koy", why war (the topic of "Naq") is so horrific. If you want an effective critique of violence, try "Clockwork Orange". Naqoyqatsi is simply a mess.

Product Description

This epic film follows Karol Wojtyla's journey from his youth in Poland through his late days on the Chair of St. Peter. It explores his life behind the scenes: how he touched millions of people and changed the face of the Church and the world; how he defended the dignity of mankind. Jon Voight's powerful, Emmy-nominated performance as John Paul II was widely praised, as was Cary Elwes as the young Karol. Shot on location in Rome and Poland in close connection with the Vatican, this is the definitive epic film on the life of Pope John Paul II. DVD includes Spanish subtitles and special sixteen-page collectible booklet. Closed captioned.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and rewarding!.......2007-05-13

A very faithful rendering of the late Pope John Paul II's biography. Jon Voight is at his best! The feature starts with the Pope's assasination attempt in St. Peter's Square and then moves to flash backs of Karol Woytyla's life. A stunning performance that communicates the spirit and hope this Pope has instilled in us all. A must see!

5 out of 5 stars Pope John Paul II.......2007-05-12

This is one of the most moving movies I have ever watched. It's message is one that should be understood by all. I liked its message so much I purchased a copy for each of my children. You do not have to be Catholic to understand the meaning behind the life of Pope John Paul. The world should watch this movie. Very well done by the actors and director. I strongly recommend you take the time to watch it.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, if disjointed, relation of Pope John Paul II's life.......2007-01-16

This film is moving and enjoyable. Two different actors play John Paul II -- Carey Elwes until he becomes Pope, and John Voight after. Both get his voice down very well, so that the change in actor is not jarring at all. Voight portrays the slow decline of John Paul II's health extremely well. A very moving portrayal. The weak points of the film are primarily due to the limited (3 hour) time span. Especially the events of the pontificate seem to fly by, and it can sometimes be confusing as a result -- did he just visit Poland again? The first half is less emotionally moving than, for example "Karol, A Man who became Pope", but seems much more grounded in the facts.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2006-12-28

I was born in Warsaw, Poland and I was only 8 years old when Karol Wojtyla became our Pope. I think this movie is excellent, true story.
There are some political and historical inconsistencies - but only Pope and his polish fellows would know the difference. Besides it - A+ ! Jon Voight did wonderful job portraying this great man. God Bless Him.

5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT.......2006-11-26

Jon Voight should receive an Oscar for this one, his best performance yet. Truly the best picture on the Life Of John Paul THE GREAT Buy this NOW you wont be disapointed.

Domestic tensions turn intimately sinister in this pulpy potboiler, which develops a steely sense of menace. The trouble begins when Mr. and Mrs. Glass (Stellan Skarsgård, Diane Lane) are appointed legal guardianship of 16-year-old Ruby (Leelee Sobieski) and her 11-year-old brother (Trevor Morgan) after their parents are killed in a car accident. As trusted former neighbors, the Glasses welcome the orphans into their luxurious Malibu home, but the all-glass structure turns into a gilded cage when Mr. Glass's motivations are revealed to be anything but friendly. With plot-thickening roles for Bruce Dern and Kathy Baker, the film builds considerable suspense before tailspinning into absurdity, and veteran TV director Daniel Sackheim takes full advantage of his prismatic setting and Sobieski's burgeoning sex appeal. The rickety script by Wesley Strick (echoing his rehash of Cape Fear) eventually veers toward self-parody, at which point The Glass House qualifies as a high-gloss slasher pic. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Go ahead, throw some stones!.......2007-06-24

Being a fan of both Leelee Sobieski and Diane Lane; I figured I had to see ths movie. that and I do enjoy the predictable B-movie from time to time!

That being said, that is exactly what this movie is, a predictable (but funny) B-movie. In all honesty, the script isn't half bad, and the acting is one thing that svaes this movie as a whole. the one draw back is the fact that it is so predictable. As someone has mentioned it seems to be more like a made-for-tv movie instead of a big-budget suspenseful thriller.

The acting as I mentioned is one thing that isn't half bad in this movie. Diane Lane as always puts on her best performance even with a lackluster script. Leelee Sobieski, who seems to always come under fire from both fans and critics alike, also puts on a super performance and shows she can hold her own alongside an actress like Diane Lane.

So yes, while the movie is predictable, and it has scenes that even may be highly unbelievable; it is a good movie to just sit and enjoy. You can even get involved yourself; yelling at the screen and asking why certain charcters are dumb enough to do certain things!

I do recommend this movie for a good time, and when it comes to Leelee Sobieski you can't go wrong.

3 out of 5 stars Two Very Nice Performances.......2007-06-19

"The Glass House" (2001) is one of those films that you enjoy during the viewing thanks to good directing, good technical film-making (production design-nicely staged action sequences-odd camera angles), and convincing dialogue; but look back at feeling generally dissatisfied. In part this is due to the moronic final ten minutes but then you realize that the premise itself is the real problem. You don't mind suspending disbelief during the viewing but afterward you resent the fact that a less elaborate script would have made your efforts unnecessary.

The film is yet another example of Hollywood's ability, given a relatively large budget $20-30 Million, to put together a good-looking and visually believable suspense movie. It brings skilled technique to a plot that's a foregone conclusion, so the viewer must wait patiently for the characters to catch up.

For film buffs (those who like to read a film) there is a fairly ambitious subtext inside "The Glass House"; working on both conscious and sub-conscious levels. Warm (orange tones) lighting for the safe/secure scenes and cold (blue tones) lighting for the places where things are off-kilter. The Glasses (Diane Lane and Stellan Skarsgard) literally live in a "glass" house above the Malibu beach. The theme, that nothing is what it appears to be, is supported by a production design of reflective surfaces; mirrors, glass, and water (its always raining) that distort the images. Mrs. Glass is a physician in a pain center who is secretly addicted to her own medications. Mr. Glass runs a seemingly thriving limo service transporting famous clients behind smoked glass windows.

There are several references to "Hamlet" with Ruby Baker (Leelee Sobieski) essentially in the role of the Melancholy Dane. The writer must have had this linked together much better in the screenplay but apparently several key elements of this dynamic never made it into production. This story is told entirely from Hamlet's point of view, a Hamlet who is frustratingly slow on the uptake and unable to make up her mind. And the viewer is supposed to be wondering what is real, what is wrongly perceived, and what is paranoid illusion. They even try to fool you with a dream sequence involving the return of Ruby's mother. Fortunately Sobieski (who looks like a young Helen Hunt) is an excellent actress and up to the challenge. Her performance (she is in every scene) keeps you focused on her story. The many scenes between her and Skarsgard are the film's real strength; they must carry the film since no one else in the cast is much of a factor.

The film opens with a "film within a film" device, which turns out to be a horror film, late- night viewing for Ruby and her rave-loving high school friends. This is an early clue to the "nothing is what it seems to be" theme. It turns out that Ruby is quite a party animal and has been successfully deceiving her parents about her nocturnal activities. This night she returns home to find police cars parked outside her house. Believing herself finally busted she enters the house only to be told that her parent's were both killed in a car accident earlier that evening. This sets the stage for life with the Glass family, a childless couple who were friends with her parents. You instantly know that they are odd because the director works so hard to make them appear normal.

Ruby and her little brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) leave the San Fernando Valley to live with the Glass's in their expensive hilltop house. Can you say: "Hansel and Gretel in a Gingerbread cottage"? Things are weird from the start as the two children must share a room. Whatever the original rationale for this idea might have been got lost in the deleted scenes of the screenplay and it just seems silly and illogical (given the Glasses long-term plans). I assume that it was originally included to reinforce the idea that living in a glass house offers no privacy but who knows.

From this point a lot of stuff happens which can be taken in several different ways with the director constantly laying misdirection. Wesley Strick's screenplay gets way too elaborate and cute with this stuff and the film must rely on many convenient coincidences to advance the storyline. But since this starts at about the midway point its too late to stop viewing now. Listening to the Strick's commentary track on the DVD it is clear that there was considerable meddling with the original story by producers, dumbing down the more intellectually compelling elements.

Still little would have been lost and the overall credulity would have benefited by a less ambitious conspiracy, there was no reason for the parent's deaths to have been anything but an accident; it would have raised the film's IQ if the Glasses had been opportunists rather than conspirators. And the attempt at irony with the brake fluid would have worked better if Mr. Glass had been knocked out and put in his car; only to wake up as it is speeding down the road.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

2 out of 5 stars So botched........2006-12-14

The Glass House (Daniel Sackheim, 2001)

There's a scene about two thirds of the way through The Glass House that pretty much sums up every way in which this movie went wrong. It's hard to set the scene without spoilers, but I'll attempt to do it anyway: a character has died. We know from various things, mostly a makeup job that would look appropriate in a microbudget horror film rather than a big Hollywood release, that said character has been dead for some time. Said character is found by another character. And, you know, just as character B finds character A-- who was previously quite banged around postmortem-- something character A was clutching in his/her hand is released and falls to the floor.

Little stupid things like that can ruin a whole movie for me, because they tell me that the director is willing to go for the cheap shot rather than trying to keep some semblance of reality in the film. That's exactly what happens here (you see the ending coming a while before the characters do, to be sure), and it's a shame, because it turns what might have been a fun, serviceable little thriller into a waste of some incredible talent.

Ruby (Joan of Arc's Leelee Sobieski) and Rhett (The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio's Trevor Morgan) have recently been orphaned. The estate's executor, Begleiter (the mighty Bruce Dern) has decided to allow the petition of family friends Terry (Insomnia's Stellan Skarsgard) and Erin (Unfaithful's Diane Lane) Glass to take the kids in, over the objections of their Uncle Jack (Law and Order's Chris Noth). All seems to be going well, but Ruby gets a weird vibe from Terry on a pretty regular basis, and begins to think that there might be some ulterior motive to the Glass' offer to take them in.

This is a great cast. A great cast. Skarsgard and Lane have been among the highlights of the acting world for a lot of years between them, and Sobieski is a fast-rising star (or would be, if she'd keep her participation in such dogs as Eyes Wide Shut to a minimum). And, of course, there's Bruce Dern, whose very name inspires some film critics to cower in their respective corners, gibbering. So how did Sackheim, a very capable TV director who's worked on some of the best series on television (House, The X-Files, Millennium, Law and Order, et al.), and screenwriter Wesley Strick (True Believer, the 1991 adaptation of Cape Fear, et al.) manage to bungle this as badly as they did?

I tend to lay the blame on Sackheim. Tricks like the hand thing in the first paragraph of this review play a lot better on the small screen than they do on the large screen; that's the sort of controlled cheesiness that made The X-Files so much fun to watch over the years. But then you look at Strick's fantastic track record before this movie, and you look afterwards and see Doom . What went wrong?

Whichever way you look at it, though, there's wasted talent to go around here. There is some fantastic set design; one wishes as much attention to detail had been paid to letting some fine actors do their thing in front of it. **

3 out of 5 stars Set-up to be a great thriller but eventually loses steam..........2006-11-07

*MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS* The general concept of this film sounds great. Two orphaned teenagers parents are tragically killed in an automobile accident, and so they go to live with old friends of their parents. This was the first mistake. What would have been better is if they would have gone to live with a couple that were completely unrelated or unknown to them. Both the teeangers have trust funds or something of that nature set up for them however they cannot claim it until they are adults. Ultimately, the plan of the foster parents is to kill them so they can get the money that was left to them. Apparently, the foster parents (the Glass's) have a lot of debts. Mrs. Glass has a drug addiction while Mr. Glass owes a lot of money to some seedy loan sharks. That was the second mistake of this film because it led to a very dismal ending. Their purpose for trying to kill the children should not have been to pay off debts or something idiotic like that. How about they are just trying to kill the children because they are selfishly greedy and want a lot more money than they already have and that's it? That would have made the characters a lot more sinister and creepy making for a more effective thriller. The ending, if you haven't read already, is pretty ridiculous and unbelievable. The first two-thirds of the film are pretty decent, but the last third of the movie is a big let-down. This could have been much better had minor changes been made and the ending totally revamped into something more satisfying. 3 stars at best.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious and improbable.......2006-08-07

What begins as an intriguing thriller quickly turns into a major disappointment. The teen heroine is intelligent and quick-witted, but held back by an inept script that never has her do the obvious: call her uncle, call the police, tell more trustworthy adults. Throw in a completely unbelievable and improbable ending - the final 15 minutes utterly laughable - and, voila! You have wasted two hours of your life.

Can't recommend this one.

Description

Shaped by the terrors of Nazi-occupied Poland and the subsequent brutalities of the Communist regime, John Paul II became one of the world's greatest proponents of religious freedom and human rights. With rare historical stills and archival footage, along with new location footage taken in Rome and Poland, this richly textured film traces the personal life and struggles of the first non-Italian pope in over 450 years. Based on George Weigel's book of the same title, Witness to Hope is a complete and intimate portrait of an extraordinary leader.

5 out of 5 stars The Definite Biography of John Paul II.......2006-04-05

This is absolutely the BEST biography out there on John Paul II. Unlike those by A & E or NBC or the like, it is simply based on the facts. Many of the other "biographies" have sections in them based on the agenda of the filmmaker. Usually taking the position of admonishment against the Pope for not being a liberal American. This one is just the opposite. It deals with John Paul II with no agenda other than to give a close and intimate portrait of the man. It is well produced and documented. I have seen hours and hours of documentaries on the late Pontiff and I would recommend this as the best.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Witness.......2006-02-01

This presentation of the life of John Paul II is extremely thorough, well-researched, and insightfully relayed. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A BUY.......2005-08-12

This is a pleasant look at John Paul II's life which will inform and move you. I have several DVD's on JP II and this one seems to be the best one out there. The original book written by George Weigel by the same title is equally worth purchasing. Both book and DVD cover the Pope's life and accomplishments extensively. You will learn much on the Pope's thinking and views and you will find out many things about him that are not common knowledge. This is a fascinating DVD. If one was to purchase just one DVD on his life, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars John Paul II The Great.......2005-08-04

The great, true biography of the great man. As his fellow polish, I watched the movie and felt as I was back home. I was 8 years old when Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope and he was the Greatest Pole I have ever known. The movie shows the terror of nazi war and the communism - the real times of my parents and grandparents. John Paul II thru his love to God and to all human race, tried to build better world - against the all odds and great critisism.
I will always miss him. Rest in peace Lolek!

5 out of 5 stars "Be not afraid!".......2005-06-16

I saw this on PBS recently about 2 months after Pope John Paul's death. It one of the best documantaries I've ever seen. Re-enactments can appear cheesy if not done well, but the re-enactments of the Pope's early life were done very well, done in a classy manner. It is a well put together documentary that does not seem 2 hours long because you are so riveted to it. John Paul had (and still has) an appeal that spans all faiths, ages and cultures, and his life is inspirational. Everyone should take a look at his life. You will see why he was important to modern history and the world. You do not have to be a catholic to "get it." The words "be not afraid" are words we can all live by!

Powaqqatsi, or "life in transformation," is the second part of a projected trilogy of experimental documentaries whose titles derive from Hopi compound nouns. The now legendary Koyaanisqatsi, or "life out of balance," was the first. Naqoyqatsi, or "life in war," once it obtains funding, will be the third. Powaqqatsi finds director Godfrey Reggio somewhat more directly polemical than before, and his major collaborator, the composer Philip Glass, stretching to embrace world music.

Reggio reuses techniques familiar from the previous film (slow motion, time-lapse, superposition) to dramatize the effects of the so-called First World on the Third: displacement, pollution, alienation. But he spends as much time beautifully depicting what various cultures have lost--cooperative living, a sense of joy in labor, and religious values--as he does confronting viewers with trains, airliners, coal cars, and loneliness. What had been a more or less peaceful, slow-moving, spiritually fulfilling rural existence for these "silent" people (all we hear is music and sound effects) becomes a crowded, suffocating, accelerating industrial urban hell, from Peru to Pakistan. Reggio frames Powaqqatsi with a telling image: the Serra Pelada gold mines, where thousands of men, their clothes and skin imbued with the earth they're moving, carry wet bags up steep slopes in a Sisyphean effort to provide wealth for their employers. While Glass juxtaposes his strangely joyful music, which includes the voices of South American children, a number of these men carry one of their exhausted comrades out of the pit, his head back and arms outstretched--one more sacrifice to Caesar. Nevertheless, Reggio, a former member of the Christian Brothers, seems to maintain hope for renewal. --Robert Burns Neveldine

Description

Hailed by audiences and critics around the world as mesmerizing (The Detroit News), this second installment of writer/director Godfrey Reggio's apocalyptic qatsi trilogy is quite simply one of the most magnificent visual and aural spectacles ever made (L.A. Daily News)! Combining stunning cinematography with the exquisite music of award-winning composer Philip Glass, Powaqqatsi is a breathtaking experience working on many levels'emotional, spiritual, intellectual andaesthetic (The Hollywood Reporter)! Bold, haunting and epic in scale, this extraordinary film calls into question everything we think we know about contemporary society. By juxtaposing images of ancient cultures with those of modern life, Powaqqatsi masterfully portrays the human cost of progress. It is a film that engages the soul as well as the mind; it is truly an absorbing experience (Movies on TV and Videocassette).

3 out of 5 stars I M H O.......2006-12-31

This movie drags on and on...it is has some striking scenery in the beginning and you oooh and ahhh for the first 15 minutes, but then it just drags out until I finally turned it off...Boring! I can see what point they were trying to make, but they took too long to make it. Everything could have surmised in a nice, short 30 minute version...Don't waste your time...

5 out of 5 stars When will that train ever stop?.......2006-11-19

With a never ending train (in Africa, raw materials trains can be even longer - several kilometers I've heard), with that inimitable music to boot, Powaqquatsi shifts gear to reveal the complex world of Western civilisation after lots of shots of people in the third world and various graphic image collections from the rural developing world. The opening sequence of miners hauling up dirt is powerful. Amongst the best things about the film is the music and the skill in editing. Lots of people stare back at you and the question that screams in the head is "what do we want?" or "what do they want?" and questions about meanings and futilities. All the images are so special, usually slowed down. Sitting under the approaching feet of people on a ferris wheel. There are connected sequences of film such as people washing, people crossing roads, people carrying things. I think this film will be so inspirational to anyone who would like to create something that may arouse a sense of meaning and questioning. Our complex world in all its beauty and poverty is revealed devastatingly. There is a little girl who walks in front of some graffiti, looking at the camera, she stops, stares at the camera having walked almost out of the shot, and then she resumes walking to disappear.

4 out of 5 stars different kind of film experience.......2006-08-07

This movie begs you to think...it bombards you with images, sometimes directly related...sometimes thematically linked... and tells a story about the world, forcing you to see the intricacies of life, how the world has been transformed...what in that transformation is abrasive and harmful, and what is intriguing, mysterious and beautiful...unfortunately the music isn't a brilliant as the film...but still...for anyone interested in indie film/documentary and image-flooding...this is an excellent buy.

2 out of 5 stars Mind-numbing and offensive anti-industrial film will prolong poverty.......2006-05-18

In this film, Godfrey Reggio gives in to the MTV method of "persuasion". The edits are often quick cuts, to the point where the viewer's mind just shuts down so it can passively absorb the film's message: that (as another reviewer has stated) economic "exploitation" produces poverty.

The film shows lots of backbreaking physical labor. It shows lots and lots and lots of poor, poor people. One of the most important images in the film is of a huge truck overtaking a young boy walking down a dusty street. The boy is engulfed in dust kicked up by the truck. I guess this means that trucks are bad.

The causes of poverty simply cannot be learned by viewing a mere progression of images without a story. If you try this, you only see how poor the poor are, and how rich the rich are, and you end up infering that one person's great wealth causes another's poverty. This is *the big lie* of the 20th century. This lie itself causes poverty, because it teaches people to waste time fighting the rich rather than learning to become rich.

Wealth is good. The pursuit of wealth is good. Yes, technological change can create unemployment for those with obsolete skills. But the extent to which technology has improved the world cannot be denied. Should technology providers feel guilty for making trucks available to people who used to use donkeys for transport? Should employers feel guilty for not wanting to hire people with obsolete skills? Hell no.

The subject matter of Powaqqatsi could have been delivered much more honestly -- it could have showed more of the abject misery of life before technology compared to the reduced misery after it. Instead, it shows people working very hard (and suffering) in semi-technological societies, and it tacitly implies technology is the cause of the hard labor and suffering. As if the labor and suffering wasn't harder before technology!

Koyaanisqatsi was a much better film: it allowed for a reasonable interpretation of the images. This film simply assaults you with pain, and hopes your anger will do the talking.

It is telling that the promotional tag-line for the film, "Life in Transformation", isn't in the film. The film, at its end, instead defines Powaqqatsi as "an entity, a way of life, that consumes the life forces of other beings in order to further its own life". In other words: parasitism. I guess, though, that "Life consuming life" or "Industrial Leeches" wasn't vague enough to sell the movie to unsuspecting consumers. I bought this DVD hoping to see how technology has beneficially transformed impoverished nations (even if that wasn't the directors intention).

What a slap in the face.

4 out of 5 stars A visual collage!.......2006-04-08

Told in documental style, the film concentrates around the exploitation of the tribes in the Third World. Nevertheless, the arresting images cannot avoid the shallowness of the final purpose.

Maybe this is the weakest link of this Trilogy.

Tu es Petrus (You are Peter): in order to ensure the Church's continuity, John Paul II carefully pondered on the conclave of cardinals that would follow his death. His goal was to pass on to Peter's successor the "Keys of the Kingdom" [Matt 16:19].

April 2, 2005 - 7.37 pm: it was announced to the world that John Paul II had "returned to the House of the Father". Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to pay tribute to his 27-year pontificate.
Following His moving funeral, it was time to think of preparing the Conclave, which would see the papacy pass from John Paul II to his successor Benedict XVI, through a religious ceremony regulated by ancient traditions and new customs. This historical event is narrated in this extraordinary documentary, thanks to spectacular, previously unseen footage from the Vatican Television Centre, such as the Velatio (covering of the face), the Rogito (placing of documents inside the coffin), the Sigilli (application of seals) and the Loggia della benedizione (arrival at the central balcony) and several moving images that cover the time from the worsening of Pope Wojtyla's illness at Gemelli Hospital in Rome to the joyful announcement of Pope Ratzinger to the world.

5 out of 5 stars A moving tribute to a giant of the 20 th Century.......2007-02-01

This DVD should have been much longer because it was so interesting and fascinating on a historical and personal level. The images and historical contents are just incredible and it is a tribute to the late pope John Paul II who has allowed us to see these historical images of his own funeral proceedings and rites of succession.

4 out of 5 stars Tu es Petrus - A Very Beautiful DVD!.......2006-12-29

The opening segments covering the illness of Pope John Paul II are very moving and sad; and the music which plays through it is very poignant. You can see the Pope's suffering at this time; yet his determination to carry through to the best of his failing abilities is inspirational. I like the part where you see him following the 'Stations of the Cross' from a video link in his private chapel and he is holding the cross in his chair and obviously moved by the ceremony which he so much wanted to take part in but was unable to due to his fast failing health.

There is quite a bit of coverage of Piero Marini (the Master of Ceremonies) at the Vatican.

The DVD features clips of the funeral and of Cardinal Ratzinger making his now famous allusion to JPII 'watching from the window of the Father's house'.

The parts which cover the conclave are very interesting, and it's informative to see what happens with the preparation of the Vatican chimneys to prepare for the votes to be destroyed after each voting session. Also the conclave part of the programme focuses on the religious artwork of Michelangelo as a kind of inspirational focus - Christ passing the 'keys of the Kingdom of heaven' to St Peter etc. It re-lives the happy scenes of Joseph Ratzinger stepping out onto the balcony having been chosen as Pope!

It's rather nice the way it features his return to his apartment to meet his neighbours and staff after having been elected to the chair of Peter. There was much excitement in the building to see his return, and all the photographers and crowds gathered outside of the building is really something to see.

The DVD concludes with some nice footage of the 'inauguration' of Pope Benedict, and also scenes from various visits he has made since becoming Pope.

The DVD is a very nice keepsake of events of those days leading up to and following the death of JPII and the election of Benedict XVI.

5 out of 5 stars A great chronicle of the John Paul II Papacy........2007-04-08

I am very satisfied with the 5 disc set on John Paul II from the vatican television center. It is over 5 hours in length on 5 dvd's. It breaks the papal term up into segments which make for easy discontinuous viewing.

There is a lot of content in this video set. I learned numerous new things about the pope that I had not learned in several other Papal documentaries and biographies.

Did you know that he traveled only 7 days in all of 1994?

You also get to see numerous interviews with the media on board the papal aircraft which really highlight the pope's personality.

The narration is in the queen's English so it feels like your watching a European newscast.

This set will not dissappoint anyone wanting to get a glimpse of Pope written from the point of view of the vatican itself. It has a great international focus and tone. Clearly this pope touched many people all over the world. He stood by them in suffering and championed their rights and social justice. Totus Tuus. Be not afraid.

4 out of 5 stars More music than liturgy.......2006-03-20

Wonderful to see the Coronation Mass sung in a liturgical context, though the focus in the video is on the music (naturally), rather than the pope celebrating Mass. Very moving nontheless. Not only is Karajan a great performer; John Paul is pretty impressive, too!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Mozart performance.......2005-09-24

Musically this DVD is of superb quality. Von Karajan's conducting is - as usual - fantastic; the vocals are strong and without the shrill whine that passes for singing in too many performances these days (why do modern composers feel the need to use choirs composed mainly of squeaky voiced pre teens); the Orchestra is in great form; and the photography is very well done. Catholics will probably have no problem in following the Mass and relating it to the music, but people unfamiliar with the Catholic Eucharist will find themselves lost at time. The written notes on the performance are useless and I suggest that sacred music specialists will find reading Nel's article on Mozart's Coronation Mass much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Another superb DVD of Karajan legacy.......2003-11-21

This DVD is a must for any Mozart fan, and any Karajan fan.
As usual the video and the music, are carefully edited.
Strongly recomend it.

3 out of 5 stars Something WEIRD!.......2007-06-10

3 stars for Mantis In Lace,4 for the rest of the disc. Lila! Get use to that tune,it'll probably stick with you forever. Every previous review has told all there is to know.I actually think the two cops are the best actors of the crew.
I watched it once,it took two attempts;got very bored and put it on pause. Watched it again and it grew on me. I'll have to be in a very strange mood to watch it again.
The extras are the good stuff. I think the cage girl is the original pole-dancer! The LSD film by the Inglewood cops is interesting, but the birth-defects pics ruined a very good..uh,mood.
My review is all over the place, but then again,so is this disc.

3 out of 5 stars Sex & LSD a Go Go.......2004-08-09

"Mantis in Lace" asks the question: Can a movie have too much topless go go dancing? In the case of this late `60s sexploitation epic, the answer is a resounding yes! To be fair, "Mantis in Lace" was made before the cinematic barriers came crashing down in the 1970s, so I guess jiggling mammaries were still considered pretty risqué. Yet I'm sure even the members of the raincoat crowd of 1968 had to be checking their watches halfway into this leaden mix of sex, LSD and murder.

As the go go dancer Lila ("Lila" was this movie's alternate title), Susan Stewart has a vague English (maybe Dutch?) accent, à la Dolly Read from "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," and an acting style akin to John Waters' late star Edith Massey. After dancing her set, she picks up a "hippie" (you can tell he's a hippie because he's wearing a dorky earring that resembles a homemade Christmas ornament) and takes him back to a warehouse owned by her father. They drop acid and have tepid sex on a mattress, while Lila sees all the swirling colors that signify all cinematic acid trips of this time period. But when she thinks she's being force-fed bananas (?) she freaks and stabs her faux-hippie one-night-stand in the back with a screwdriver, then hacks him to bits with a meat cleaver that happens to be handy. Then it's time for more topless go go dancing! The whole movie follows this pattern: Lila dances, picks up a man, does acid, freaks during sex and kills him. In between the go go dancing and LSD carnage are scenes of two "Dragnet"-style cops investigating (poorly) the murders. There's also one "casting couch" scene, apropos of nothing, in which an aspiring stripper--who looks like Kate Mulgrew--has sex with a bar owner (the only scene to give a flash of female full-frontal nudity and a bare male backside). Through it all we repeatedly hear the theme song, "Lila," so hypnotically awful you'll remember it long after you've forgotten the movie.

Despite its problems, "Mantis in Lace" does have its charm. The camera work by Lazslo Kovacs is excellent, giving this cheap movie a more polished look than it deserves. Pat Barrington has a small part as a belly-dancing stripper, and while she's not a much better actress than Stewart, she's certainly a more interesting one. The movie's concept is a pretty inspired mix for its time, if only director William Rotsler had used the premise to its fullest potential, starting with a real script. The Something Weird DVD release features an alternate "LSD murder scene" that's a lot more interesting than the one in the final film. There also are 100 minutes of outtakes, and while their inclusion seems like a good idea, I defy anyone to sit and watch these scenes--which, other than featuring a bit more blood and yet another go go dancer, differ little from what's in the final cut--without hitting fast forward. Rounding out the extras are an LSD scare film, a tedious LSD-themed nudie loop/morality tale, and a short featuring a crazed-looking stripper writhing about in a bamboo cage.

3 out of 5 stars The good scenes are amazing.......2004-02-23

Mantis in Lace is a very mixed bag. You would think that a sexploitation / mad-slasher movie combined with the LSD subculture of the 60's would be a great idea -- and it is. But nearly half of this movie consists of extended scenes of strippers performing in the club or "trying out" on the casting couch. One can't help but feel that they only had enough time and budget to shoot half a movie and needed to pad it to get to a feature length running time.

With that said, the scenes where Lila trips out on acid and kills her prey are outstanding. Laszlo Kovacs was the cinematographer and it's easy to see that he would go on to shoot such classics as Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces. Susan Stewart is a remarkably bad actress who can't deliver a line to save her life or even pass herself off as a mediocre stripper. But she's very cute and she has a certain charm that prevents her lack of talent from completely ruining the movie.

The DVD presentation of the movie is in full frame (1.33:1). The picture quality is outstanding for a 35 year old low-budget movie. The outtakes are actually longer than the movie itself, and it appears that there may have been a version of this movie that was far bloodier the the final cut that's presented her.

There are three short films on the DVD as extras, two of which are great time capsule relics from the 60's. "LSD: Trip or Trap!" is a 19-minute film produced by the Inglewood Police Department to warn youth of the dangers of LSD. It's sort of a 1960's version of Refer Madness. The second, "Alice Goes to Acidland", is a 12-minute nudie acid trip that almost defies description.

4 out of 5 stars response to the VIEWER from Deluth.......2003-08-03

You can't compare this film to THe WALL. Here is my opinion(if u want it). People who are born from the 1980's on should NEVER compare a film they just recently watched from today's standards. The WALL was a film concerning a band member who was mentally ill and abused by his parents. Mantis in Lace (however)is a time period picture. You(as the saying goes) had to be there in the 60's experimenting with LSD and drugs (San Francisco/Haight Astbury area). In order to appreciate the fullness of the film. The two films are completely different! I, on the otherhand enjoyed this film. Hilarious, entertaining and very similar to Jack Nicholson's THE TRIP. Mantis is no better then The WALL. Both films are good but come from different decades.

5 out of 5 stars One Psychedelic Trip.......2003-01-24

First of all, kudos to Something Weird Video for the Special Edition DVD release of "Mantis in Lace". SWV has done an excellent job with this DVD. I have never seen this movie before and I've wanted to buy this DVD for some time. I really love this film. I like the way it was filmed. The lighting or lack of lighting, on most of the scenes are great. The lack of lighting makes the film look like a film noir. The scenes where Lila is tripping out on acid are excellent. The colors and the geometric designs that are lighted on the actor's faces are fantastic. The director of photography, Laszlo Kovacks, has done an excellent job of capturing the psychedelic imagery to the screen. The acting is just awful, but that's what makes the film great. The movie is 87 minutes long. It was filmed between November 18-25 of 1967 and released in theaters and drive-ins in 1968. The psychedelic music sounds like early unreleased Pink Floyd recordings. It uses tapes that were cut up and then edited back together at random, backwards tapes, heavy echo, laughter, and strange music. The theme to the movie is really corny, but I found myself playing it over and over again. It's kind of like a train wreck, you don't want to look, but you know you just have to. The special edition DVD includes the original theatrical trailer of the film, an alternate psychedelic murder scene which is the same as the first murder scene, but more psychedelic designs are superimposed to the original scene. Things like fireworks going off, more geometric psychedelic designs, negative exposure of go-go girls dancing, and a fat man in a black mask holding bananas and dollar bills in his hands. The DVD also includes over 100 minutes of out takes, deleted and alternate scenes from the film. This feature doesn't have any sound, but the music and sound effect tapes from "Mantis in Lace" is dubbed in so you can hear the music and effects without the dialog. It's like having the original soundtrack on the DVD. This section also features a much longer version of the movie's theme. The funny thing is that some of the music that is in "Mantis in Lace" is also in the movie "Mondo Mod". This is because the same man, Harry Novack, produced both films. The DVD also includes The following archival short subject films:
1. Sid Davis's classic classroom scare film "LSD: Trip or Trap?"
2. "Alice Goes To Acidland"
3. "Girl in a Cage" Why this short film is added, I don't know why. It doesn't relate to the rest of the DVD.
4. A gallery of Harry Novack Exploitation movie poster art with Harry Novack radio-spot rarities.
If you want to know what an underground psychedelic/sexploitation/exploitation film is, this is the film to watch. I highly recommend it. I am very pleased with "Mantis in Lace. It's everything I thought it would be. This DVD will be played a lot on my DVD player. It's now one of my three favorite DVDs. I am not disappointed with "Mantis in Lace". This is psychedelia at its best. They don't make movies like this anymore. By the way, does anyone know what ever happened to Susan(Lila)Stewart? She's a real H-O-T-T-I-E.

2 out of 5 stars subversive..........2007-02-19

Giuseppe Alberigo, who has written what is said to be the definitive history of the Council (5 volumes) seems to be at odds in his hermenutic of the Council in comparison with Benedict XVI's address to the Curia in December of 2005 where an interpretation of Vatican II as "rupture" was shown as false while one of "continuity" was highlighted and endorsed. I hope and pray that the Holy Father (and the Holy Spirit?/!)is not being thwarted in efforts to implement the 21st ecumenical council.
