5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!.......2007-06-12

This is a really good movie. Unlike Eli Roth's, you have to actually THINK to understad and enjoy what's going on and why is this guy doing such things. Also, not as gore-ish as Hostel and I think thats great because you wont be distracted from the real trama of the movie.

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOTHING LIKE HOSTEL.......2007-03-05

I don't know why people tend to over-simplify movies by making a lame, and usually completely inaccuare comparison to a great movie. When I read a review that says "its a *insert random country here*'s answer to Taxi driver" I cringe. Hey reviewers, Why not compare a serial killer movie to "Titanic" or "Sweet Home Alabama", It is no more asinine of a comparison.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is no "Hostel" and Reese Whither*whatever the hell her name is* is scarier than anything is this movie.

He's a rapist with a chainsaw. It will scare the hell out of you if you paid to see it and had high expectations. I don't mean to state the obvious or anything, but a horror movie have violence. All the death scenses are off-screen.

I enjoy horror movies and I have the stomach for it. What I don't have is an understanding of the purpose of all the rape scenes. It added nothing to the movie or the horror. In "Irreversable", it was critical, and you were meant to sit there in agony, completely montionless, this let you share the pain of the female lead and all that knew her, it also added countless layers of ways the viewer identified with the characters, and allowed Noe to draw you in. Here it is just superflous filth, I just don't understand it.

1 out of 5 stars UGH........Boring.......2007-01-28

This movie claimed to be the Spanish version of Hostel, however I found it lacking. You don't see any sort of torture aside from blood splatter. He kidnaps prostitutes, straps them to a table and doesn't feed them for a few days. While they are held captive he asks them quesions about their belief system and their views of where their life took a wrong turn then proceeds to take poloriod pictures of them while they are bound to a table dressed in bra and underwear. I think it only shows 3 or 4 girls but the movie claims he did something like 18. He pours urine from a bottle on one girl. He has sex with the girls while he and the girls are clothed. Then he cuts them up with a chain saw which is where you see the blood splatter scenes. Now he does save some of the meat to cook up and feed to his wife. The whole time he keeps a diary and lures the police to find him so he can be famous.

5 out of 5 stars umm...wow!!!!!!!!!!.....ny god.......2007-01-02

this film is good but deff violent......if your not into the violence..stay away...but like the other reviewer stated if you like ..hostel...then this is your movie....more violent than hostel...it made hostel look like a kids movie.....good for those who like blood...

5 out of 5 stars Messed up.......2006-09-12

Man, just when you think you've seen all the brutal, messed-up scenes
you can, along comes a movie like this to shake you up. What's in the
water over there in Spain? Antonio Frau is a recently-paroled killer
who served his time but hasn't been very well rehabilitated. He
inherits an old brothel from some relative and he decides this is a
sign from God to kill hookers...and pretty much anyone else who he
deems "unclean". Of course, he doesn't just kill them, he "purifies"
them, which consists of a lot of torture and drawn-out pain until
finally dropping the chainsaw on them.

Admittedly, you don't see all the blood and guts, a lot of it is
insinuated, but in a way that's better. It sticks with you, the mental
images of what he does.

If you liked Hostel or are a big fan of really sick torture scenes,
this is a must-see!

1 out of 5 stars An hour and a 1/2 that I will never get back!!!!.......2005-12-17

Well, I have officially just wasted an hour and a 1/2 of my life on a movie that is quite possibly the worst I have ever seen. Do not waste your hard earned money on this sorry excuse for entertainment. It was horrible!!! Even with the hottie from Unfaithful, it wasn't worth it. Do yourself a favor, and pass this one up!

1 out of 5 stars Angel Of Crap.......2005-06-25

I'll put it simply: 'Angel Of Death' is a movie that should never have been made. Its embarassing.

Watching this borefest you will find it extremely hard to believe that Mira Sorvino once won an Oscar. My how she has fallen. She preens around Spain talking in the worst Spanish accent ever. In fact, its probably the worst accent ever done in any movie ever made. She plays some super-agent on the trail of some killers, who happen to look like KKK members only wearing red with hoods literally standing five feet straight up in the air. They're completely retarded looking. Helping Sorvino out is some hunky Spaniard who can barely complete a sentence(I'm sure he needed help finding his way home each night after shooting). The entire cast is pathetic, the dialogue supremely clunky, and the script is convoluted, confusing, and filled with gaps in logic.

The only decent thing in the film is the cinematography. The film is shot very well with a beautiful look. Too bad the rest of the movie sucks so much rectum. Obviously the cinematographer has some real talent but how he/she got roped into this bomb is beyond me.

So if you're in the video store and see 'Angel Of Death' on the shelf, nonchalantly open the case and break the disc in half so no one else has to suffer through this piece of trash. Ugh.

2 out of 5 stars INSOMNIACS DELIGHT.......2005-06-16

ANGEL OF DEATH would be a good movie for insomniacs. It's incredibly slow and the plot is so convoluted and confusing, it's hard to keep up with it, if you even stay with it to the end. Mira Sorvino and Olivier Martinez sleepwalk through their roles, and it is only the glorious presence of Italian screen legend Alida Valli that induces me to give it two stars. She is marvelous as the elderly lady whose story is at the heart of the picture. She commands the screen with gentle elegance and she deserved a better movie than this.

1 out of 5 stars El Lame-o.......2005-05-07

Mira is better than this. The writing is terrible, the dialog is lame, the acting is stilted, the directing is amatuerish. It's just plain bad. The story had potential, but it couldn't overcome the bad dialog and wooden delivery. I rented it because I'm a Mira Sorvino fan, but even she doesn't make it worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars Banal, Thrill-less Thriller with Sleepwalking Mira Sorvino .......2005-03-25

Mira Sorvino and Olivier Martinez star in 'Angel of Death' (origianally called 'Semana Santa') produced by European film companies from as many as six countries -- Germany, Italy, England, France, Spain, and Denmark. The film was theatrically released back in 2002 in France. Since then three years have passed, but probably you still never heard of the film. No wonder, because the film is so bad, so dull, and so sleep-inducing.

While all the dialogues are spoken in English, 'Angel of Death' is set in Spain, and Mira Sorvino plays Maria, detective transfered from Madrid to Seville. During the celebration of Semana Santa, she is given a case of brutal murders, committed by a serial killer in red robe. With chauvinist cop Quemada (Olivier Martinez, 'Unfaithful' 'Taking Lives'), Maria starts the investigation, picking up the clues, and confronting the uncorporative section of the ... are you still listening?

The clithe-ridden script is no help when director (or whoever involved in this film) does not know how to show thrills and suspence on screen. When you see the killings on screen, they are all shown in the most banal way; you watch, 1) a victim; 2) a killer; 3) the former is attacked (with no preliminary part to enhance the tension, in the same fashion as cheap TV games), and 4) dead body or injured character. The film refuses to scare us, or even the victims themselves, and the results are utterly thrill-less thriller. That's surely achievement, sort of.

But what Mira Sorvino is doing here? Detective Maria Delgado, wearing tailor-made suit and skirt? She sports curious Spanish accent (which suddenly vanishes at times), but that is not the worst part of it. Her acting itself is probably the worst in her career, and she literally sleepwalks, and sometimes looks as if she knew this film would be a flop. Olivier Martinez, always oceracting, is no better, and I thought, isn't he a French? Only special appearance by Alida Vali ('The Third Man' and Dario Argento films like 'Suspiria') offers some dignity, and her character's flashback sub-plot is more interesting than the main one.

The director fails to show any clear motive of the killer. Consequently we see dead bodies, but have no opportunities to understand the reason for the killing. The police do not know even the rudimentary procedures of investigation, and are often so stupid that one of them does not do anything useful until the story comes nearly to the end, but all of a sudden he becomes wise, and gets the answer!

I give two stars simply because I like Mira Sorvino, who is Oscar winner (just in case if you forgot it). She's the only reason for two stars, and no other. Not that her acting is great. Don't say that I didn't warn you.

2 out of 5 stars Low expectations..........2006-09-19

I'm getting increasingly low expectations with every new Franco movie. "Snakewoman" turned out to be better than most of his post-1998 films, but that doesn't make it a good movie. The sound quality is bad as usual.

The DVD includes a bonus feature length film, "Dr Wong's Virtual Hell". Like the last time there was a bonus feature on a Franco DVD ("Helter Skelter" on the "Broken Dolls" DVD), the film is more or less unwatchable. Half of the running time is a long sex scene, and the rest of the story is told by means of speech bubbles and narration. They have even exploited the late Howard Vernon by editing in footage from "The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein", for no apparent reason. When the characters don't communicate by speech bubbles you can't hear what they say because of the accents and the bad sound quality.

"Snakewoman" is better than "Vampire Junction", "Lust for Frankenstein" and some of his other recent films, but it's not very good. If you're a Jess Franco addict and have already seen all of his old movies, and if you know what you're getting into, you may want to add this DVD to your collection. If you're not a fanatic, there are lots of better Franco films to see before you need to buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars A very weird western..........2005-06-15

The rating of 4 stars is given in comparison to the other b-grade Spaghetti Westerns, and NOT the Sergio Leone classics. The reason being, is because A Town Called Hell is a fresh look at the Spaghetti Western genre. Unlike the others, this tends to be fuelled with originality and authenticity that strays far away from the styles of Leone. Infact, the movie abstains from incredibly long duels, cat and mouse sequences, witty comedy elements and the profounding array of Leone trademarks. Instead, what we have here is unique western directed by Robert Parrish that would probably fit in a political-revolutionary/drama-esque category. A Town Called Hell has an
incredible mix of subplots, each represented by the key characters, and at times this makes the film a little confusing. The story begins with a group of mexican revolutionists led by the characters of Robert Shaw and Martin Landau that storm into and massacre an entire town called "Bastard" that is controlled by military units. Years pass on, and the story shifts to a woman named Alvira (Stella Stevens) who sleeps in a hearst inside a dark carriage manned by a supposed deaf mute called Spectre (Dudley Sutton). They have arrived at the same town, which is now under the crooked mayorship of Don Carlos (Telly Savalas) and an entourage of revolutionists turned bandits. The film then re-introduces the character of Shaw, who is now an alcohol driven town priest that doesn't take too lightly to Savalas' dictatorship, though he tolerates it for the sake of the peasants of the village. With Alvira's arrival in town, she offers Don Carlos a reward for the deliverance of her husband's murderer and wishes to place the murderer's body in the hearst she rests in. She believes the killer is named "Aguila", a name that is respected and protected by the peasants including the priest. But she is not the only one searching for Aguila. The character of Martin Landau, now a traitor to the revolution, has returned to the town as an army colonel and is searching for the same person, as he believes Aguila to be the leader of the revolution. The
film itself is a very peculiar and strange addition to the Spaghetti Western genre. That said, the film delivers some nice performances particularly from Telly Savalas and Robert Shaw. If you liked "Bullet for the General" and you're looking for an interesting western that stands out in its originality and is far from Leone standards, then I strongly recommend this. But if you prefer your westerns strictly Leone, then i suggest you stay away from this one.

2 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.......2004-11-13

The only highlights in this useless movie were the brief glimpses of the gorgeous Stella Stevens.

A weak movie and I would recommend you don't waste money buying the DVD.
