5 out of 5 stars Great concert.......2007-07-08

In 2006, Bruce Springsteen and his backing group did a concert in Dublin, Ireland in November, 2006. And what a concert it is! Much of the focus is on his folk singing from his album in respect of Pete Seeger.

The backing group is very nice. We see guitars, other strings, and nice backing singing. The whole is, indeed, greater than its parts.

Springsteen treats these classic songs (e.g., "Old Dan Tucker," "We Shall Overcome," "When the Saints Come Marching In," "Jesse James") as well as other works (such as his own "Blinded by the Light") with respect. And that makes this a really interesting and compelling CD.

Some examples of songs on this CD:

"Old Dan Tucker": The audience is really into this song. There is singing along. It is cool to see Bruce Springsteen sing this. The backing group is excellent. The singer takes this song seriously, and creates a fine version in the process. Springsteen is in good voice.

"Erie Canal": This old song, which many of us sang back in elementary school, is presented in a straightforward fashion. His voice works well with this song. Remember the old lines?

"Low bridge, everybody down;
Low bridge, we're going to a town."

Very nicely done!

"When the Saints Go Marching In": A version taken in a slow and spare manner. . . . There is a nice piano introduction. Springsteen provides an intimate beginning to this song--just him and his guitar. With repeats, more instrumentation appears. Nicely done!

Other nice versions of songs as well--from his own "Blinded by the Light" to "We Shall Overcome."

Thus, a very intimate and interesting CD. And it is nice to see the concert as well as listen to it. . . .

5 out of 5 stars best ever.......2007-07-07

Even if you don't care for Springsteen singing, this band is the
best I have seen live or otherwise. It is a very long show besides.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-07

I loved this DVD, you felt like you were in Dublin with the band. The songs and performance were great. If you are a fan of bruce, you must buy this Dvd and the Cd. Just wonderful, I play it all the time!! Love it!

4 out of 5 stars If you missed the show ..........2007-07-03

This is a very good chance to see Bruce with the Sessions Band if you missed the tour. I did, so I am happy they decided to put this DVD together. Overall, this is a very good show, which I am rating 9 over 10 or 4 stars and a half. Besides the songs from the Segger album, I particularly liked some of Bruce's old songs in new versions such as 'Atlantic City', 'Open All Night', 'Further On (Up the Road)', and specially 'Highway Patrolman', which is in my Top 5 Bruce favorite songs and that is presented here in what some have said the definitive version of it. Bruce holds his guitar like Johnny Cash, and his voice is sometimes very tired. One of his back singers takes over sometimes, and I really liked that. The Sessions band is outstanding. All members are terrific musicians and prove to be a true good companion for Bruce. The only one I don't like is Patti, who strums her guitar (I am starting thinking her guitar might be unplugged) and moans instead of singing. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I am already fed up with her and her posing, always keeping an eye 'on the prize' (Bruce) like someone is going to steal him from her. This is music, HIS music, and it looks like she just has to be there, no matter what. After watching this video and being annoyed by her any time she took over, I went back and watch the videos on the Seeger album, and there is one video where the band is out in the garden playing, and there she is .... clapping hands! C'mon please, give me a break! She also appeared in the documentary for the Born to run BoxSet (Wings for Wheels), when she was not even a member of the E Street Band and she had nothing to do with it! I used to like her, but not anymore. She always does the same and it bothers me. Other than that, again, this is a good show and I recommend it to anyone who likes Bruce Springsteen.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.

5 out of 5 stars Best music from Bruce in years.......2007-07-02

I first saw Bruce and his band at McDonough Arena in Georgetown in the mid-70's. I have a vivid memory of a wonderful night, ending with a raucus version of "Sea Cruise" that blew the doors off. This album brings back all of those great memories - and more. The musicianship is fantastic, the emotions of the whole band really come out. They love their work. It shows.

The band's performance in this instance is especially noteworthy for its masterful jazz harmonies, timbral balance, and rich polyphonic textures.

Description

Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average, 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series.

It takes a certain kind of comic genius to create a character who is, to quote the classic Sondheim lyric, appealing and appalling. But be forewarned: Borat is not "something for everyone." It arrives as advertised as one of the most outrageous, most offensive, and funniest films in years. Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen reprising the popular character from his Da Ali G Show), leaves his humble village to come to "U.S. and A" to film a documentary. After catching an episode of Baywatch in his New York hotel room, he impulsively scuttles his plans and, accompanied by his fat, hirsute producer (Hardy to his Laurel), proceeds to California to pursue the object of his obsession, Pamela Anderson. Borat is not about how he finds America; it's about how America finds him in a series of increasingly cringe-worthy scenes. Borat, with his '70s mustache, well-worn grey suit, and outrageously backwards attitudes (especially where Jews are concerned) interacts with a cross-section of the populace, catching them, a la Alan Funt on Candid Camera, in the act of being themselves. Early on, an unwitting humor coach advises Borat about various types of jokes. Borat asks if his brother's retardation is a ripe subject for comedy. The coach patiently replies, "That would not be funny in America." NOT! Borat is subversively, bracingly funny. When it comes to exploring uncharted territory of what is and is not appropriate or politically correct, Borat knows no boundaries, as when he brings a fancy dinner with the southern gentry to a halt after returning from the bathroom with a bag of his feces ("The cultural differences are vast," his hostess graciously/patronizingly offers), or turns cheers to boos at a rodeo when he calls for bloodlust against the Iraqis and mangles "The Star Spangled Banner."

Success, John F. Kennedy once said, has a thousand fathers. A paternity test on Borat might reveal traces of Bill Dana's Jose Jimenez, Andy Kaufman, Michael Moore, The Jamie Kennedy Xperiment, and Jackass. Some scenes seem to have been staged (a game Anderson, whom Borat confronts at a book signing, was reportedly in on the setup), but others, as the growing litany of lawsuits attests, were not. All too real is Borat's encounter with loutish Southern frat boys who reveal their sexism and racism, and the disturbing moment when he asks a gun store owner what gun he would recommend to "kill a Jew" (a Glock automatic is the matter-of-fact reply). Comedy is not pretty, and in Borat it can get downright ugly, as when Borat and his producer get jiggly with it during a nude fight that spills out from their hotel room into the hallway, elevator, lobby and finally, a mortgage brokers association banquet. High-five! --Donald Liebenson

On the DVD
"Global Visitings" captures Borat-mania in all its hype and glory, as Sacha Baron Cohen, never breaking character, promotes his film around the world. On the itinerary is Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Toronto Film Festival, a now-legendary screening aborted after a projector malfunction. A mixed bag of deleted scenes finds Borat trying to bait more unsuspecting citizens, including an animal-control worker who refuses Borat a dog after he asks, "How do you recommend I cook this?" and a doctor who is nonplussed by Borat's obscene medical history. A supermarket visit offers the most maddening fromage-inspired looniness since Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch. Also good for a few chuckles are a faux soundtrack commercial and a Baywatch parody ("Sexydangerwatch"). --Donald Liebenson

Sacha Baron Cohen brings his Kazakh journalist character Borat Sagdiyev to the big screen for the first time. Leaving his native Kazakhstan, Borat travels to America to make a documentary. As he zigzags across the nation, Borat meets real people in real situations with hysterical consequences. His backwards behavior generates strong reactions around him exposing prejudices and hypocrisies in American culture.

4 out of 5 stars Cultural learnings indeed.......2007-07-09

This irreverent film has little left to be said. This not usually my type of movie, the huge success of it was a clear consequence of all the propaganda and publicity surrounding it (which by the way is included as bonus material in this DVD release), I was a little reluctant to watch it at the movie theaters and I waited to watch it on DVD.

Man I loved this film, the "innocence" of the character may be funny to a lot of people, but that is precisely what Sacha Baron Cohen used as a mean to get the worst of the people interacting with him, by provoking everyone surrounding him while pretending to be an innocent character from Kazakhstan, many of the more bizarre lines in this film come from the people around him and not Borat himself. This of course generated a lot of legal problems when the film was released that did nothing but give the movie more publicity than the one it already had.

I still find it hard to believe he was able to leave the rodeo after insulting all the people in the place, there are lots of situations in which Borat does nothing but set the situation for people to show what they really think or believe (a police officer tells him to be ready to be stopped in his van lots of times because of his appearance, when Borat asks why, the officer simply replies "that's the way it is in America")

I am not saying of course this is a serious film, it can be outrageous, disgusting, but funny in the end. This release contains deleted material that I believe could have been better that some things that were left in the film (check out the employee at the convenience store when he tries to explain that in America there can be many different types of cheese and also see Borat trying to buy a dog to have "sexy time" and then eat it)

It also includes a section for "Global Propaganda" that contains interviews with Connan O Brien, Saturday night Live and Jay Leno with Martha Stewart (my personal favorite) It is also funny to see the way Borat thanks Michael Moore at a film festival when he tries to thank him. Another bonus material to be found is the bizarre music infomercial (advertising the music from Kazakhstan) released on the web to promote the film.

Again, this may not be my regular type of film but it sure had me laughing, it is a film that beyond the jokes it might leave you with a couple things to think about.

4 out of 5 stars Cracked Me Up..........2007-07-07

I really thought I would hate this movie. I thought it would be too much of Borat making fun of the unwitting "norms" he fools with his crazy ways. You know what? It wasn't like that at all!! Cohen is amazing for never breaking character during the most ridiculous scenes, and everyone around him ends up lookinig silly. The naked fight was hilarious and/or gross, you decide. I say check out this movie and you probably won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Veddy Nice.......2007-06-30

Borat is, simply put, one of the funniest films of all time. Sacha Cohen never steps out of character and what makes it funny is people believe he's real. Borat's apparent ignorance is a setup to reveal the actual ignorance of those he encounters. Though the producers got releases some are suing him for revealing how dumb they are.
Borat basically mocks all his characters attributes: antisemitism, sexism, lack of etiquette, etc. An interesting trivia note is when Borat is speaking Kazakh, he's really speaking Hebrew with some Polish thrown in. And his sidekick is speaking Armenian. The village is actually in Romania (and they're getting in on the lawsuits too). High five!

1 out of 5 stars Controversial???.......2007-06-26

Potty humor. If you're 13 and you need a reminder of what anti-semitism is then go rent it... otherwise don't even bother. This movie was a complete waste of my time. I give it one star because I couldn't give it anything lower.

5 out of 5 stars Controversially hilarious.......2007-06-20

I did not see this movie in theaters because it looked like garbage to me and I did not want to waste yet another ten dollars on a crappy film. One night when Borat was on video, I took a trip to the video store to rent Children of Men, but since they were out, I decided to rent Borat instead and give it a shot. What I discovered was possibly one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in my entire life. Sure, Borat was offensive, but sometimes you just need to put that aside and realize that the jokes are actually quite funny. I don't understand why people are saying that Borat is so terrible because it makes fun of so many different things, but in all actuality, it made fun of women to no end and I took no offense to that. It was all in good fun and everyone should remember that it was just a movie; if you don't like it, then don't watch it--no one is forcing you to like it. I personally enjoyed it quite a bit and it had me laughing out loud the entire time and I don't think another movie has ever had me laughing quite like that. At the very least, give the movie a shot. If you don't like it, then don't ever think about it again, but if you do, then props to you because the movie was genius and insanely funny.

I bought this DVD expecting George's clean light-hearted humor that I saw in Why You Crying. This was a complete diversion from that style. This was offensive and crass. I used to be a die hard fan of Lopez. Not any more.

This is terrific! I am a big fan of George Lopez, have attended his comedy shows and own several DVD's. However, this is the best. He talks about everything from politics, to religion to family and beyond. He talks about being true to who you are and not giving in to the pressures of society. Great show!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's the Greatest Drama/Soap/Comedy of the Decade.......2007-07-07

This show is two things for certain:
1. On the outside, it's a funny, clever, sometimes even witty comedy drama about an out of place latino girl and her adventures in the sophisticated New York fashion scene. Think "The Devil Wars Prada" the TV show, only with a girl who decides not to change to fit in with the crowd.

2. This show tackles a lot of things currently going on in todays society. There are several gay characters, including Betty's young brother. There are some lesbians, though not terribly often. There are transsexuals, including Betty's boses thought to be dead brother who is now his sister. There are topics and discussions about illegal immigrants and the impact of such things on people's lives, etc, etc.

All in all it's probably one of the best shows on television.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shows on TV.......2007-06-15

I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed a TV show this much since Friends.

America Ferrara, quite possibly one of the most beautiful people I have ever seen, stars as Betty, a young aspiring journalist/writer who is employed at "Mode"-a high fashion magazine-by the owner of the massive enterprise to help control his notoriously promiscuos party-boy son Daniel. Betty herself IS rather unfortunate looking, with little sense of style, apparent dental problems, and the lack of a waxer. However, despite the rather misleading title, the story is not at all about emphasizing her unattractiveness or a sort of a "makeover". Betty is a nice girl, with morals and a heart-a very genuine person...a stark contrast to all of the beautiful but unimpressive models and other personalities of Mode.

The series follows Betty's friends and family members, all well-drawn and complex, with numerous faults but ultimately you feel for them. Her family consists of her illegal immigrant but good-hearted father Ignacio, obnoxious and slightly high strung yet lovable sister Hilda, and her rather swooshy nephew, Justin. The family goes through a plethera of very realistic problems throughout the whole. Justin's father is-at the beggining- a shady figure, scantly in his life and then only to criticize. As the series progresses, however, he grows as a person and by the end you really want him to succeed(he doesn't, no other spoilers). Her father has a rather shady but understandable past, and is eventually shipped back to Mexico-his fate is questionable at the end of the series, however you know some pretty bad things are bound to happen.

Her other friends are equally colorful. The series begins with Betty in a serious relationship with Walter, a rather bland(read: GEEKY) man, who cheats on her, dumps her, and then wants her back again. However, he is ever-so-slightly redeemed with his grovelling and begging, along with his obvious remorse for what he has done, but nonetheless you know he is NOT good enough for her. Henry, a dorky-but-cute accountant at Mode, is. However, Betty is unsure of her feelings for him, and then she is dating Walter, and then she is not, and then he has a girlfriend, and many other mishaps come up. Henry is a charming, likeable guy who is undoubdtedly genuine in his feelings for Betty, their relationship is complex, interesting, and real.

The show is at its strongest, however, when dealing with the characters at Mode. While they may be darker shades of gray than Betty's friends and family, they are also more complex, more well-drawn, and more interesting. Daniel is a ladies man as established from day uno. However, there is another quality about him, that somewhere inside of him he is a good guy. He is troubled by losing his older brother, Alex, and has used women to get over it since it happened. Likewise, he becomes friends with Betty-perhaps the most stable relationship he's got. He becomes dependant upon his girlfriend-a captivating Selma Hayak-only to have his heart broken in a very public way. He then suffers a relapse and returns to his old ways, to only get worse as the season progresses. You really feel for Daniel, even if you frown upon his skirt-chasing ways.

Daniel's family is even more complex and interesting. His brother Alex turns out to be not so dead after all, in fact he is alive and well-except that he is now a she. The gorgeous Rebecca Romijn stars as her, and gives a highly sympathetic performance despite the fact that her concealing her survival from her family is a rather unlikable action. Her mother is similarly sympathetic, but you get mixed feelings towards her. She seems like a kind woman-she is-but she also is an alcoholic. Oh yeah, and she killed her husband's mistress. She was very mistreated by said mistress, and her husband, but that hardly makes it understandable. However, you don't hate Mrs. Meade and can actually feel for her. Mr Meade is easily the most unlikable character in the show, but you still find yourself feeling for him from time to time.

There is a Henry VIII-esq love triangle between Mr. Meade, Mrs. Meade, and Whilimena Slater. Whilimena is a very ambitious, intelligent, and somewhat likable "other woman" who seduces Mr. Meade so as to someday be the owner of Mode. For a while you think Whilly is a completely unsympathetic character until you examine her rocky relationship with her ungreatful daughter and the general emptiness of her life. Her two spastic assistants are the best-written characters. The "gay man" required in any and all comedies is both stereotypical and complex-he is on the surface rather flamboyant and harsh, but underneath it is a layer of sweetness and compassion, evident in his defending of Justin, eventual friendship of sorts with the formerly harrased Betty, and defending of Amanda. Amanda, the other assistant, is blonde and beautiful with the obvious bitchy exterior. Inwardly, however, is a broken heart and lonely woman, who it turns out, never knew her mother and is in love with Daniel.

The beauty of Ugly Betty is that, despite the obvious temptation, they have not once "made over" Betty. If they did, I would probably stop watching. The moral center of this show(that what is on the inside is all that really counts) seems obvious and cliche, is helpful in this Laguna Beach and Paris Hilton culture. As the main character is not a whiny brat with superficial problems and equally glossy friends, we can like Betty, sympathize with her and her problems, and revel in her happiness.

Two things that made the show even better than the five stars I've given it-the appearance of Kristin Chenowith in the finale(I am a broadway lover and Wicked addict) and the "B" necklace Betty wears. If you all didn't know, the necklace existed long before "Ugly Betty" and was, in fact, worn by Anne Boleyn, a Queen of England and personal hero of mine. It was just a lovely addition to a perfect show.

Highly, fully reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars One most the most pleasant and fun shows on television.......2007-05-18

In retrospect, the 2006-2007 television season debuted an unusually large number of first rate new series: HEROES, MEN IN TREES, 30 ROCK, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, and UGLY BETTY. That is a remarkably strong group of new shows. UGLY BETTY occupied a unique niche among them. The new show it most resembled was MEN IN TREES. Both were light fare, intended to entertain and charm rather than challenge and rattle. It was unorthodox, but in comforting ways. It was, basically, a very nice show. One never came away from any episode shocked or dismayed as with the best episodes of DEXTER or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but to tell the truth, after a week of watching my favorite shows on TV--BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST, DEXTER, and others that were sometimes exceedingly emotional affairs to watch, I found it a refreshing change of pace, never shocking, never emotionally taxing, never intellectually demanding. It managed always to be smart while also very easy to absorb. Most of all, it was great fun.

The plot was simple. Betty Suarez desires a job in publishing. After she applies at MODE magazine, where she has a disastrous interview, she finds herself mysterious hired as assistant to editor Daniel Meade, playboy son of Meade Publishing owner Bradford Meade. It turns out that Bradford had seen her leaving the building and ordered her hired for his son simply because she is as far from a fashion model in appearance as can be imagined. She has terrible hair, dresses horridly, has garish braces, thick glasses (and eyebrows), and carries more weight than your standard attractive woman. Father makes her employment mandatory for his rare-do-well son. Very quickly, however, she proves herself not merely necessary for Daniel's professional life, but a good friend as well. One of the most attractive aspects of the show is, in fact, their genuinely caring, completely platonic, friendship. Working at MODE pulls Betty into a world of interoffice intrigue and political infighting. To be honest, I could have lived without any of the stories. The appeal was just about 100% based on a large number of likable and adorable characters popping up each week.

America Ferrera, who had previously been amazingly effective in the cult-hit film REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES and the teen chick flick THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (a sequel to the latter is due in 2008), simply steals this show as Betty. Though not a slender actress, America in fact has a beautiful face. They do a great make up job on her, however, putting a terrible wig on her each week (with very stressed looking hair), gluing thick, fake eyebrows on her, giving her thick-framed, brightly colored glasses, fake braces, make up to give her an unpleasant complexion, and an incredibly unflattering set of clothes. Despite this dramatic transformation each week, Betty manages to be utterly charming and adorable. A couple of people I've talked to feel it is a bit of a cheat to have an attractive woman play someone who is supposed to be "ugly," but I think it would be a bit cruel to take an unattractive person and have them play such a role. I would be surprised if she does not get an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy. Lauren Graham deserves to win in this category (as she does every year) for her genius work in THE GILMORE GIRLS, but since the Emmys year after year have ignored Graham (her show is on the wrong network), I will probably be pulling for America to win.

Ferrera is supported by an amazingly strong cast. Eric Mabius is wonderful as Daniel, consistently showing himself to be a decent guy despite his efforts to transform himself into a waste of humanity. I think there is a secret contract someone dictating that Alan Dale appear in every other show on TV in some capacity or other. He is his usual stern self as Bradford Meade (he also has a very occasional but ongoing role in LOST, the only show I've seen him on where he gets to use something like is native Kiwi accent). Vanessa Williams is a lot of fun as the scheming and unscrupulous Wilhelmina Slater, the fashion editor at MODE who would love to be the editor in chief. Ashley Jensen, who really is Scottish, plays the head of wardrobe at MODE and one of Betty's few friends at the magazine. But the people at MODE who make the show worth watching are Michael Urie and Becki Newton, who play Marc and Amanda, Wilhelmina's gay assistant and the mildly sluttish receptionist, both of them for most of the season Betty's mortal enemies (though by end of season she was making headway with both of them as friends, in particular Marc, inspiring him to come out to his mother). There is also Henry, winningly played by Christopher Gorham. He had previously played the title role in JAKE 2.0, on which UGLY BETTY executive producer Silvio Horta also worked. I suspect his appearing on UGLY BETTY has something to do with that connection. Gorham is a very good-looking guy who is somehow able to pull off completely nerdy guys, in this show an accountant.

But there is more than just the office. There is Betty's home life. Veteran character actor Tony Plana plays Betty's illegal immigrant father (one of the subplots deals with his attempt to get a green card). He is one of these actors who has appeared in literally hundreds of TV shows and movies, but has rarely had an especially prominent role. You love to see fine actors who have paid their dues get a great role like this one. Ana Ortiz is hysterical as Betty's garish sister Hilda, but the person who steals nearly every scene in the Suarez household is twelve-year old Mark Indelicato, who plays Betty's nephew Justin. We don't know that Justin is gay, but his effeminate swagger, his deep love of stage musicals, and his encyclopedic knowledge of fashion marks him with all of the stereotypes.

This show is too smart to be a guilty pleasure, but it is just as much fun as one. It doesn't go on my list of my absolute favorite shows. It isn't as sophisticated or as intelligent as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, as engrossing as LOST, a fist-in-the-gut like DEXTER or THE WIRE, or as original or jaw-droppingly brilliant as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but sometimes you just aren't in the mood for something as heavy as these shows. Sometimes you just want to have a good time and relax. I promise there are few shows on television more perfect for that than this.

4 out of 5 stars NOT too ugly.......2007-05-10

America Ferrera (who made people's 100 most beautiful list) is fantastic as Betty. It's a cheesy and fun show. It is just as good as the original novella version my grandma watches. It's not the West Wing or anything, but it's a cute quirky show.

Description

Sammy Hagar And The Wabos - Livin' It Up Live! - Caught live in St Louis on their sold out 2006 US tour, Sammy And The Wabos bring down the house with songs from their new album, Livin' It Up, as well as some of Sammy's famed solo work. Joined on stage for the second half of the show by legendary Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony, the band rips through some of rock radio's classic tunes. From "I Can't Drive 55" and "Mas Tequila" to "Finish What You Started" and "Right Now", it's one big Cabo party with the "Red Rocker"! December 6, 1978-it might have started before then but I'll never forget Sammy opening for Ted Nugent at the Checkerdome in St. Louis. Opening acts aren't supposed to have the audience in the palm of their hand but Sammy sure did. His honesty and sincerity captivated the audience. The relationship between this artist and this city would never be the same. Almost 30 years later Sammy is still honest, still sincere and now more than ever, holds the St. Louis audience in the palm of his hand with a shot of Cabo in the other. Sammy fans everywhere just want to know, "What is it with Sammy and St. Louis?" It could be the relationship between Sammy and KSHE radio which dates back to the early 70's and the Montrose days. It could be all of the great solo albums. It could be the days with Van Halen. I think it's a combination of all of the above magnified by the sweat and energy of 33 plus shows that over 500,000 diehard fans have witnessed in this city. Whatever this "thing" is between Sammy and St. Louis it's real, it's heartfelt and spiritual to a degree. Once you watch the DVD you might understand. Favazz--KSHE/St. Louis Songs: Miss Tequila, Mexico, There's Only One Way to Rock, Rainy Day Women (#12/#35), The Girl Gets Around, Rock Candy, I'll Fall in, Love Again, I'll Take You There, Sam I Am, Little White Lie, I Can't Drive 55, Heavy Metal, Good Enough, Summer Nights, Right Now, Finish What You Started, Best of Both Worlds, Fight for Your Right, Cabo Wabo

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD!.......2007-07-09

I watched this DVD this past weekend, and well, all I can say is that I felt like I was actually at a Sammy Hagar concert! This release really has a great live feel to it. Fortunately, the editing was done well, with not too many camera angles or split second angle changes that have plagued many DVD releases in recent years (like Iron Maiden's last 2 live DVDs). The camera is actually allowed to linger on one shot for more than a fraction of a second. In addition to a well produced video, the setlist is also great as well as the audio. This DVD really is like being at a big Sammy Hagar party!

The only thing that I would change on this release is how loud Mona's background vocals are on certain songs. Her background vocals are too loud in the mix and are at times as loud or louder than Sammy's. Michael Anthony's vocals, however, are perfect during the second half of the set. I like Mona on bass in this band, but it sure would be nice to see Michael as the full time bassist for Sammy now that he's been booted from Van Halen. I believe that Sammy and Michael are just meant to be togther and I hope to see this happen sometime in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy is the man !.......2007-06-28

This is a fun DVD. It shows Sammy in one of his favorite cities, St. Louis, doing what he does best .. playing live and having fun.
Who cares that Sammy is a 60 year old seasoned veteran ... he still rocks like he's 20 and gives meaning to the phrase "old is only how you feel".
What I like about this DVD is the fact that he plays his staples, then throws in some almost forgotten classics (The Girl Gets Around, I'll Fall In Love Again) and even when Micheal Anthony joins him on stage, you get some staples of a Van Halen set and lost gems like Summer Nights and Good Enough.
If you love good time rock and roll from one of the greats ... get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome up to date video.......2007-06-22

Absolutely great Hagar footage.

Why someone who is NOT a Hagar Fan, would view this DVD is absolutely beyond me.

So for the one star dork who asked the question why can't old gezers like Sammy get out of the way........Well, why watch the concert in the first place?

A Hagar fan who DOESN'T like this, well, I can respect, if not agree with that. But if you don't like Sammy in the first place, why waste your time?

Sam man touches on many great hits that HAGAR fans want to see. He rips loose on the guitar quite a bit so that adds to the project.

St. Louis must be an absolute AWESOME city to see Hagar play in as the audience is comepletely into the show. I've seen Sammy before, but never in St. Looo. Given I'm a die hard Rams fan, I need some stars to align for me and make a trip to kill two birds with one stone.

If you ARE a Hagar fan, you WILL love this DVD. If you are NOT a Hagar fan, you probably won't. But then agian, why would you bother?

Hat's off to the Red Rocker!

5 out of 5 stars Why St. Louis Loves Sammy.......2007-06-21

As I write this, I am listening to Sammy's DVD release concert LIVE on KSHE. It sold out in minutes. What is it with St. Louis and Sammy Hagar. At one of his shows, we know all the words and sing along during the show. It does not matter if it is Montrose, Sammy Solo, or Van Halen (Van Hagar in St. Louis), we love it. I tried to find the DVD at lunch and it was already sold out. You really have to hear Sammy live to appreciate his music. Buy this DVD and then go see a show, after drinking lots of tequila of course.

4 out of 5 stars NICE TO SEE THIS ON DVD! KEEP THEM COMING!.......2007-06-28

I must admit that I liked these ToHo films as a kid,but they are mostly for laughs now.I guess a little for nostalgia too. These Japanese Monster movies are just hysterical! I had not seen this one for many years and I was doubled over with laughter watching it! It is great that they released this film and I would have given it 5 stars, but I remember some different scenes as a kid that ended up in the deleted scenes section of this release. Still all and all a great buy with 3 versions of the film and lots of extra goodies. I would love to see "War Of The Gargantuas", "The Green Slime" and " Yog Monster from Space" released!

4 out of 5 stars Media Blasters does it again.......2007-06-28

Another terrific release from this company. I'm so glad that original Japanese features are finally getting what they deserve. Subtitles too.
Great menus and extras as well.

1 out of 5 stars You're kidding me right...?.......2007-06-22

Yeah I saw this movie when I was about five or seven years old. I'm sure I liked it at the time, but I do not now. "Frankenstein" looks like a John Ratzenber look alike in bad make-up, The monster design for Baragon was better (why did it have to be wasted in this movie). I have never seen the alternate ending with the giant octopus, but it sounds stupid (even for a Toho Monster Movie). In the end, Tokyo Shock may as well be called Tokyo S&^&%.

5 out of 5 stars frankenstein movie.......2007-06-16

i just want to mention that this movie is one of the best that toho productions has ever made as far as science fiction and i would reccomend it to anyone

5 out of 5 stars Going to be Tokyo Shock's best release........2007-06-06

I've been waiting for this movie to come out for quite some time. This movie and War of the Gargantuas. You gotta love the beautiful Ms. Kumi Mizuno. Beside her, the movie is good, one of Toho's best. Add that with the features this DVD is packing. Both Japanese and American releases along with deleted scenes and commentary. A must have for all Toho and movie monster fans. This year has been a blessing for Toho fans with the rereleases of their movies on DVD in widescreen modes and with special features. Grab your friends and a six pack of beer and watch all these rereleased DVDs.

4 out of 5 stars Mindcrime at the Moore: the good, the bad, and the ugly........2007-07-08

As a longtime QR fan who had high expectations for OM:II and was a little disappointed I purchased this DVD with a bit less fervor. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to find a similar (if not more solid) effort than the Livecrime release of 16 years ago. It absolutely made sense for the band to put together a tour that covered the Mindcrime saga in its entirety; however the prospect of combining what was essentially two separate concerts (along with the visuals) given the fact that these guys are well into their 40's seemed a little far fetched. As mentioned in a previous review, this was indeed a massive undertaking. With that in mind, my assessment of the whole DVD experience was going to be much more forgiving than it was after my first listen to the latest studio release.

My findings-good, bad and ugly.

The good: As I alluded to before the coverage of the original Mindcrime release was the most tight I've heard since 1991. Throw in the theatrics and you have a dynamic that was simply absent on "Live Evolution" and "Art of Live". From the drum corps backing up Scott Rockenfield in Anarchy X to Geoff Tate belting out "Eyes of a Stranger" while bound in a straight jacket Disc 1 is worth the price of admission alone. The band nails every song and sprinkles in some creative improvisation ("Electric Requiem" and "My Empty Room") for good measure. Pamela Moore providing backup/harmony effectively augmented Tate's vox-even though he sounded better than he has in years. Additionally, a more animated Tate and company managed to successfully capture their audience rather than just play for them..a testament to this being more than a rushed swan song. Believe me, once the title track kicks in you'll be held captive as well. The best aspects of "Mindcrime at the Moore" are borne out in Disc 1, which leads to..

The bad- Actually we'll just say not-so-good. Disc 2 covers the latest release and it can be safely said that Mindcrime II is best experienced live. The passion that was so prevalent in part I does indeed carry over into this segment, however it became quite apparent a few songs into the set that this was headed towards anticlimax. After energizing the crowd for 90 minutes the show seemed to lose some steam-an unfortunate eventuality given an abrupt end to the frenetic pace after "A Murderer?". Even with a sound that was as true to (or better than) the studio release, the second installment of the Mindcrime saga live just didn't have the substance to close the deal. Fortunately QR remedied the crowd's hunger with "Walk in the Shadows" and "Jet City Woman" as encores.

And, the ugly: As much as I appreciate the many faces of Mike Stone I just couldn't digest his look for this show. His Plasmatics-era mohawk and recurrent virtuoso-esqe solo fills seemed quite out of place. Fortunately he holds his own along with Michael Wilton...which didn't happen on "Live Evolution". Another forgettable moment was the live rendition of "The Chase", sans Ronnie James Dio. Actually, neither Tate nor Dio were present on stage-just a very amateurish and almost laughable video that accompanied the band throughout the number. Understandably, RJD was only able to perform live at the LA show (which is included as a bonus feature on Disc 2) but the video could've been approached very differently (i.e. have a more impassioned Dio on screen with Tate singing live in the foreground).

In sum, given a few shortcomings it can't be overstated that this is without a doubt their finest live release. Considering how this aging band covered material not only conceived almost 20 years ago but comprising the finest metal concept album in history this performance is a must to watch and own.

4 Stars for sure.

5 out of 5 stars must have for your music/dvd library.......2007-07-06

simply put - you HAVE TO own this DVD if you even marginally call yourself a Queensryche fan.

The music is tight and they sound as good as they did 20+ years ago (well, you can tell Geoff has aged a little, but not that much)

32 songs for $22! I ripped the audio from my DVD's and put it on my ipod, it is that good of a production. My only complaint is that the bass player looks bored and doesn't really get into the music.

Pamela Moore is awesome in her role of Sister Mary. Even Ronnie James Dio makes an appearance!

5 out of 5 stars Great saga complete together, the best way to experience it........2007-07-05

This is the next best thing to seeing them live, and seeing the queenryche sagas of Mindrime played back to back. Unfortunately, they didn't get them squeezed on one DVD, so you have to stop and change discs unlike a live continuous show, but thats ok. Well worth the money. Its Livecrime to the max, now with essentially Livecrime 2 expanded on the masterpiece. Must own for a Ryche fan, and definitely should be purchased first before the CD if on limited funds.

5 out of 5 stars Simply...Ryche at thier best........2007-07-04

I have had the privledge of seeing Queensryche 2 years in a row now. And I remember "Mindcrime 1" tour. This DVD is awsome. Great to see the Ryche in top form. Plus the bonus with Ronnie James Dio doing "The Chase." is excellent. This is a must have for true Ryche fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Live DVD Production !!.......2007-07-04

For those of you who do not have the DVD, GET IT, particularly if you saw the live show in person during the OMC I and II tour. It is a fantastic, PROFESSIONALLY captured and edited spectacular, not to mention a high-quality audio track to match!

Seriously, I have watched several "live" DVD concerts, but this production beautifully blends the live performance, terrific camera angles and imagery, and post-production editing into what can truly be called a visual and audio masterpiece. It is meticulous and detailed, capturing the exciting pulse of a live performance without compromising the cinematic story-telling that this saga requires.

And let's face it, you absolutely cannot enjoy this DVD (despite all I have mentioned so far) unless Geoff Tate and the band delivered musically. Guess what? THAT'S THE BEST PART!! Tate sounds terrific! For the first half, he delivers a powerful, spot-on performance that is every bit as good as Operation LiveCrime! What chops he still has! Cripes!

And the band is rock solid --- tight technically and impressive melodically. Wilton and Stone are superb, and the underpinnings of bass and drums are phenomenal, to boot.

I saw the show in Baltimore and loved it. The DVD is even better! It is a worthy chronicle of a band and a story that just won't quit. I hated waiting so long for this thing, but now I am fulfilled.

Go out and get it. If you rate it less than a five, you're wound way too tight, dude.

History will show that Frank Zappa (1940-1993) was one of the greatest American composers of the 20th century in any musical form, and this superb episode of the Classic Albums series offers ample proof of Zappa's genius. As Zappa's reverent son and musical heir Dweezil Zappa rightly points out, Over-Nite Sensation (1973) and Apostrophe (') (1974) are the albums that epitomize Zappa's masterful jazz/rock fusion, virtually defining a unique musical genre that can only be called "Zappa." The recording of both albums is chronicled here not simply because they best represent the dazzling complexity of Zappa's music, but also because they were recorded simultaneously in a burst of creativity, proving beyond any doubt that Zappa was more than simply a mischievous provocateur. While the world may know Zappa from his mainstream novelty hit "Valley Girl" (with daughter Moon on vocals), any devoted Zappaphile will tell you that this is the real Zappa, in full musical bloom, working miracles in the studio with The Mothers of Invention and a stellar variety of topnotch musicians who cite their time with Zappa as the most rewarding period of their careers.

The Classic Albums series strives to be definitive, and this must-have DVD is fully authorized in the scope of its coverage. With complete cooperation and participation from the remaining Zappa family (sons Dweezil and Ahmet, daughter Moon, and widow Gail are all extensively interviewed) and additional interviews with Billy Bob Thornton, Alice Cooper, guitarist Steve Vai, veteran Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, and many of Zappa's closest associates and collaborators, this 97-minute documentary is packed with highlights and fascinating revelations, like the pristine precision of Zappa's hand-written compositions, Zappa's childhood fascination with the compositions of Edgard Varèse, and his diligent, prolific, and disciplined, drug-free approach to recording and touring. Zappa's studio process is amazingly revealed when Dweezil and Zappa "Vaultmeister" Joe Travers sit down at a mixing table to analyze the master tapes of classic Zappa tracks like the hilariously controversial "Dyna-Moe Humm." In addition to vintage archival clips of Zappa discussing his music and career, and home movies of Zappa's band on tour during the mid-1970s, this DVD also includes the complete video of Zappa performing "I'm the Slime" on Saturday Night Live in 1976, live footage of a 1973 performance of "Montana," and a new performance of "Camarillo Brillo" by Dweezil's tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa (with Dweezil playing one of his father's favorite Gibson guitars). Bonus features also include a Travers-hosted trip into the massive Zappa archives, and further deconstruction of Zappa tracks "Dirty Love" and "Nanook Rubs It." If you're a casual Zappa fan, this DVD will turn you into a passionate convert. For those who've loved Zappa all along, it's a little bit of heaven here on Earth. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Roxy Still Eslewhere.......2007-06-27

Worth the price for "Montana" alone - extracted from the long, lost "Roxy & Elsewhere" shows. I live in hope that the Zappa Family Trust will relent, put this set out and finally end the yearning of Zappa fans across the world.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding bonus material, good feature material.......2007-06-27

The bonus material in this DVD is excellent. There is a great version of Montana with the 73 Roxy band using two drummers (Chester, of course went forward as the one drummer in 74...)the shots of Ruth Underwood and the interview with Ruth is such a treat because her music was such an amazing part of Zappa's music that was never replaced in any of his future bands. The studio analysis was very good but a bit brief in my opinion because there is so much music to analyze in these recordings. The biography parts of the studio analysis/feature were very good and informative and of interest to those not acquainted with Zappa's music. Learn more about Tina and the Ikettes and try not to be turned off by some very dry performances from Zappa plays Zappa. The ZPZ sections were really the only parts that were not excellent (I know they have to sound better than that!) the video is a very interesting piece which is accessible to both serious music nerds and non Zappa fans.

3 out of 5 stars more music less talk.......2007-06-15

To the die-hard frank fan this historical footage will be invaluable. But to regular fans or to the person who may wear an occasional python boot it will be disappointing. Not enough music and to many interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-12

Wow, a great DVD. Haven't seen any other episodes of this series but this is excellent. Not exactly an unauthorized biography but great insights into Z's processes and nice tidbits like tina turners uncredited background vocals on Dinah Moe-Humm (you can almost imagine Ike with his hands around her throat)and insightful inteviews with those involved. Plenty of ex-bandmates (see Aynsley Dunbar for one, and all The Grandmothers for others) have had nothing nice to say about Z so its nice to see soe home cooking. Here's a vote for more of these - he made over 70 albums while alive, so lets see more.

4 out of 5 stars A bit too much wasted on off-topic tabloid food.......2007-06-12

More should have been spent on the testimonies of other surviving members of the Mothers of Invention - I am not sure the actual name of this band is even mentionned once! - or at least of the few that made it in the final script or accepted to be part of it. Long time Zappa wizes like George Duke and Ian Underwood must have had tons of insights to share on the learning, arranging and performing of this music, yet so little remains here. (Who IS this guy with the cap!?) Luckily, we have Ruth Komanoff's brilliant and slightly didactive demonstration of her tuned percussion skills, love of Zappa's music and wildly amusing account of how her marimba came to be electrically amplified. Zappa's elder son Dweezil comments at the mixing board about the master tapes, and this is also very precious and quite revealing, especially for those who think these are merely "joke albums".

Neither on Apostrophe nor Over-Nite is there a single song related to groupies (had it been "Fillmore East June '71" and "200 Motels", it would have been different), and Zappa had said before in interviews that "Dina-Moh Hum" is a fictitious tale. But the steamy ditty is taken as pretext to stray off towards tabloid-type nurishment for too long in such a short program. And they should have also take the time to explain who the character in "I'm The Slime" really is, for those who can't read.

But a very good documentary all in all, if not at premium cost.

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Sills, we're going to miss you!.......2007-06-29

It's almost spooky: As a long-time fan of Ms. Sills, I had borrowed and watched this DVD only about a week ago. And TODAY I find out she's been striken with lung cancer and isn't expected to survive. And it's bringing me to tears.

Back in the 1970s when boys my age idolized rock stars and professional athletes, MY idol was Beverly Sills. A coloratura soprano, Beverly Sills (or "Bubbles" as she was nicknamed) wasn't exactly a critical darling; from a purely technical point of view she wasn't up there with Maria Callas or Jessye Norman. But she did bring a certain populism to the stage, a warmth and enthusiasm that endeared her to audiences everywhere. I thought she was wonderful, and I even had an 8-track tape of hers that I would bravely sing along to (but only in the privacy of my old Mercury Bobcat). But doing that falsetto today, at the age of 48, simply is no longer possible, alas.

As for this DVD, it's a wonderful retrospective of her career as opera superstar: Not only performing in lush and glorious operas, but also guest starring on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson (back when that program still had class), "The Carol Burnett Show," even "The Muppet Show." Few people younger than 30 will even recognize the name; but for those of us who remember Beverly Sills so fondly, it is a sad time indeed. As an online friend of mine said, "When she passes, Opera will lose far more than a singer; the Arts as a whole will loose an invaluable spokesperson."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical record .......2007-01-18

I bought this mainly because I am a "die hard" Bastianini fan. This disc comes with bonus tracks from "Opera Cameo". In this, Bastianini sings Madamigella Valery", "Pura siccome un angelo", "Di Provenza il mar, il suol"etc..
But by watching about this American soprano, I realized that also she was a wonderful singer.

5 out of 5 stars Sills Soars - again!.......2007-01-14

This is a wonderful collection of snip-its representing the long and fascinating career of Beverly Sills. I found it hard to believe that many of these stretch back almost 30 years when she was at the height of her career. You get to hear her in a number of classic roles in opera she is known for - "Manon", "Julius Ceasar", "The Ballad of Baby Doe", as well as enjoying her charm while guesting on numerous television shows like the Johnny Carson show, Dinah Shore show, and others. The quality is very good, and serves as a great reminder of what a memorable and fantastic singer she was. I'm happy to have been able to enjoy hearing her "live" as well as meeting her in person, and now have something to bring back some of those great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating docu on Bubbles - but too little singing!.......2006-12-23

I loved this DVD a lot and I'll definitely watch it again. Even though not many of Sills' performances survive on DVD many videoclips of her art are available to be enjoyed. Here we hear Sills as the lovely lyric coloratura she was. Her silvery voice may not be everyone's cup of tea but it enthralls me every time I hear it. It's just beautifully pure and yet shockingly expressive. If you love Beverly Sills or want to discover the magic of a lyric coloratura, buy this DVD. The only drawback for me was that it's more docu than singing.

As for the former reviewer's unprofessional remarks on Maria Callas (A colleague Beverly Sills had nothing but praise for) ... I suggest you be more careful when it comes to judging people you've never met. La Callas the singer is for the audience, Maria the woman is none of our business.

3 out of 5 stars This is not a recital.......2006-12-23

I was very disappointed. To begin with, the title is a real turn-off. "Made in America." As though that had something to do with her wonderful voice and personality. Callas was born here too, and she was a gorgon. I almost didn't buy this DVD because of that. I hate this country. Sills sings (I didn't watch the excerpt from Traviata) only 2 arias complete, Cara nome at the age of 10, and Una voce poco fa in an enchanting performance. Also she sings a few pop tunes complete. It's all excerpts (SHORT ones! VERY short!) and snippets. It's very disappointing and unsatisfying. I learned a lot about Sills (which I'm glad and grateful for), but I got bored with the flick. The movie covers her life from age 3 (when she started performing) up until age 51 when she retired from singing. I never realized how good (that's an understatement) Sills was or how much I loved her. There's nothing stuffy or pompous about her. She's nice and fun. After thinking that, sigh, it dawned on me just how many (almost all that is available) CDs and DVDs of Sills I own. If Netflix offered it (it doesn't right now anyway), I would recommend renting this DVD (to learn about Sills' fascinating life and to get a glimpse of her glorious voice and magical personality), then instead of this, buy compliations and complete operas with her in them. I'll sigh never watch this again. Sills, Sutherland, Pons - those are my favorites. Though before I discovered what a monster she was, I enjoyed Callas too. Sorry. I like to think well of my heroes. Oh hell. Buy this DVD. It's fascinating and there is SOME music in it, in bits and pieces.
