Amazon.com essential video
This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack stinks.......2007-07-04
Want to know why 73% of people who bought this DVD bought the Ultimate version next? Its becasue they (like me) didn't know they were getting the version with the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack. His soundtrack STINKS! It ruined the entire movie. Not only that but this version has edited out the really cool scenes of Tim Curry in the black light---gone. Don't waste your money on this piece of garbage get the version with the great soundtrack from tangerine dream.
The Music was not the same as original........2007-05-29
The main reason I bought the movie was because of the original music that was in it. They have re-edited the whole movie with another soundtrack making it a totally different movie. It is just not as good a movie as my VHS tape of the original theatrical release. What happened to it?
A Classic Fairy Tale for All.......2007-05-21
Legend comes to DVD in this 2-disk set.The first disk being the director's cut,and the second disk being the U.S theatrical release. This is one of those "pick your poison" things were you either like the original theatrical release or prefer the film the way it was ment to be seen by the director or perhaps you like both?Personally,I despise the U.S theatrical release. The films are more or less the same but the directors cut is a bit longer. What kills the U.S release is the deplorable soundtrack. Its way too 80's and is a real annoyance,I depised it deeply.I prefer the directors cut.The original music score by far fits Legend much better,as do the additional extended scenes.Rob Botton who is noted for making some of the most realistic and best prostectic/mechanical effects really delivers as you can almost believe what you are seeing on screen. The over all art and design is as much a feast for the eyes as is the story line which was written almost as perfect as it could be. This is your "basic" fairy tale formula where good vs. evil and our hero(a very young Tom Cruise before he really was begining to get noticed)is sent on a quest to bring the world of light and dark back into balance instead of letting evil rule the land.Jack is sent to save the last Unicorn and to save the princess (Mia Sara) from eternal doom and damnation.I have always liked this film, even when the U.S release was that was available, but this 2-disk set is a real treat.I only wish that the sound was digitally re-mastered,but we can't have everything wee want, now can we?This is a DVD well worth owning, you do get two films in one plus some good featuretts about the making of the film and how it evolved to what we all see now.Legend is a classic, and there aren't too many films out there that can really claim such status.I highly reccomend this DVD over just the U.S release, good for the whole family(some intense scenes) but nothing too horribly graphic.Make Legend a part of your DVD collection, you can't go wrong.
Love The Goldsmith Score.......2007-05-09
The man was a GENIUS and I much prfer the director's cut version.
Nice trip into the past.......2007-05-08
I had never seen any history behind this overly artistic film, but always enjoyed it for what it was. It was nice to get some insight into the original story ideas, and some of the making of the film. The "deleted scenes" were just that, it didn't help progress the film, in my opinion.
It's just a good fantasy story, with the villian taking the spotlight, though this villian didn't like light at all...

While it owes much of its appeal and appearance to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eragon can stand on its own as an enjoyable fantasy for younger viewers. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by teenage author Christopher Paolini, this boy-and-his-dragon tale offers clean, fast-paced family entertainment without compromising the darker qualities of Paolini's novel (the first in what is known as the "Inheritance" trilogy). The plot centers on 17-year-old peasant farmboy Eragon (played by appealing newcomer Ed Speleers) who discovers a mysterious blue object that turns out to be an egg that eventually hatches to reveal Saphira, a blue-scaled dragon that quickly grows to full-size. According to prophecy, Eragon is destined to be a dragon-rider like those who once protected a benevolent kingdom, thus reviving an ancient conflict against the army of King Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a former dragon rider who turned to evil, now in alliance with a! dark-magic "Shade" sorcerer named Durza (Robert Carlyle). While the movie serves up familiar fantasy elements and offers little if anything new to fans of the genre (or anyone who's read the books of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. Le Guin), it's visually impressive (especially the dragon scenes, with Rachel Weisz providing the telepathic "voice" of Saphira) and full of timeless wisdom, much of it delivered by Eragon's heroic mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons), himself a former dragon rider with memories of past battles and hope for Eragon's future. Add a fair warrior-maiden named Arya (Sienna Guillory) and you've got all the ingredients for a worthwhile (if not particularly original) fantasy that points directly to a sequel. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to individual viewers to decide. --Jeff Shannon

Waste of time and money.......2007-07-09
I bought the book and movie at the same time, deciding to read the book first and then watch the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and toward the end could not resist the urge to watch the movie.
It was the biggest let down. I totally expected it to be shortened here or there and knew it would not be as brilliant as the book itself, but I did not expect it would be as horrible as it was.
The movie moved along at an incredibly fast rate not only skipping many events, but changing the story a bit here and there. The movie is very choppy, the person who rewrote it for the movie script, the producer, director and editor should not be allowed to work in the film industry anymore until they have gone back to school.
The acting was spotty, but not completely horrendous, considering the movie was being produced in such an amateaurish way. If I had written this book, I'd have made sure to have my say in the way it was made. There are too many pieces left out and changed that kill the story, and underplay the brilliance of the novel. I hope they did not already get a contract to do the next book of this trilogy. I, for one, will not waste a penny on it.
My recommendation, skip this movie. Read the book instead, it is superb (not quite Tolkien quality, but good) and is time well spent.
Dragons Den.......2007-07-09
I was expecting to sit through this movie, but not to really enjoy it. Kind of pointless really, to watch a film and expect not to be entertained. However, much to my joy I really, really enjoyed it.
So don't trust in all the critisms or bad press, put aside all expectations of realism and accept that you will be swept into a fantasy film and just enjoy.
I would def. watch this for a second time!
Don't Judge the Book by this Movie.......2007-07-08
Children and those who have not read the book may enjoy this movie but having read the book I know that it pales beside the novel.
Most readers have heard by now Christopher Paolini began writing the novel Eragon when he was fifteen. His youth can be seen in his writing, his plot is at times clichéd and often formulaic. However, having said that, I enjoyed the novel. Unfortunately I can not say the same for the movie. In the novel, Paolini creates a detailed back-story, geography and laws that rule his imaginary world. (Yes, some of these laws are borrowed from other authors.) The characters of this world, in comparison to the movie are much fuller and more developed.
It is very difficult to take a 750 page novel and adapt it into a 103 minute movie but this movie leaves the essence of novel on the cutting room floor. People enjoy books and movies if they care about the characters. While I did care about Eragon in the movie, I cared much less about Brom and Murtagh and their relationship with Eragon is vital to the story. Other changes that were made were merely annoying. Arya is an Elf in the novel and that is important to the story. What is she in the movie? The military draft subplot is entirely an invention for the movie and is completely unnecessary. I could go on but I have made my point.
Eragon is not fantasy in the class of The Lord of the Rings or The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe but I asked myself, would I have enjoyed this book if I had known nothing about the author? My answer is yes. For me his youth only adds to the enjoyment I receive from his work. To have created a fine story while only a teenager makes me wonder what he will achieve in twenty years.
Christopher Paolini is a fine young author and I look forward to Eldest and all his future stories. Sadly these later books will probably never be made into movies because of the hack job done on Eragon.
Recommendation: Read the book, Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1), skip the movie.

You B@stards!!.......2007-07-06
How anyone could sleep at night after ruining such an incredible story is beyond me. This is just another money making scheme hugging on the coattails of something great. If you haven't read the book I don't know that you could follow such a jumbled story with gaping holes and no character development, and if you read the book chances are you wanted to cry after seening this film as I did. Shame on you Fangmeier. READ THE BOOKS, SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Decent if you haven't read the books.......2007-07-06
If you haven't read the books, this was a decent movie. But I also think the only reason I understood some things is because I read the books. Like many movies based on books a lot was cut out or switched around. So much so that I don't see how they can make any sequels without seriously upsetting the story. They barely touch on the elves and dwarves(which seem to be humans, you can't tell).
Also skipping the werecat was like in LOTR skipping Tom Bombadill. How can you skip a character that had a major impact on the story?

Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the "good lands," while dimwitted mutants with poor comic timing emerge from the nuclear wastes. In the ultimate confrontation between good and evil, a hippie-ish wizard named Avatar defends his utopia against the technological and neo-Nazi revival of his bad-seed twin, Blackwolf. With volleys of jokes that couldn't hit a barn door, elves with Brooklyn accents, and the dubious climax that sees the kindly old wizard using one of the hated machines of war to triumph over evil, Wizards is one of fantasy animation's least successful examples. --Alan E. Rapp
Description
Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, this fantasy adventure follows the story of Avatar, the kindly, eccentric sorcerer-ruler of Montagar, a rainbow paradise inhabited by elves and fairies. Avatar?s evil brother, Blackwolf, dominates Scortch, a bleak land of goblins and wraiths. When the power-hungry Blackwolf attacks Montagar, Avatar, accompanied only by a spirited young woman and a courageous elf, must enter the darkness of Scortch to save his world. WIZARDS is a thought-provoking, kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes that will enthrall animation fans and film lovers of all ages.

wierd but fun.......2007-06-14
this is a strange story of 2 wizards and thier struggle for power... it was fun to watch and thats why i bought it foo....:)
Blast from the Past.......2007-06-01
I was trying to describe Wizards to my 17-year-old, then thought "I wonder if it's available for sale?" Sure enough! It was every bit as whimsical, inventive and bizarre as I remembered!
Interesting Storyline.......2007-05-26
A little slow-paced, but very interesting animated storyline about a post-holocaust world where the "Big Bad Evil Guy" uses WWII propaganda films to motivate his tropps to overrun the "Good Guys." Not for children, but teens can probably keep up. As usual, a must for Bakshi fans. A decent gamer film.
The Fantasy Amine - before fantasy was cool.......2007-04-10
I remember seeing this a couple times in college, a solid 25+ years ago, usually after some heavy partying, and being impressed. I picked it up on a lark, to show my kids and you know what...more critical and cynical over the years, it still is well worth the time. While others will quibble about the animation quality, Bakshi made a story you care about, that is fun and cool to watch, with animated characters that are better than most, and even a message. It is a movie of its time, which might confuse the young, but a great fairy tale is a thing to remember forever.
When Bakshi is good, he is really good, hopefully if rumours of Wizards 2 are true, he keeps in touch with what made the first one worth thinking about all this time.
I did something bad..........2007-03-29
So, I wanted this movie on DVD a LOT and at the time, people were able to request certain films be put on DVD through Amazon by entering your e-mail address...
And over the course of about a month or two, I sent Amazon hundreds of e-mail addresses I created on Yahoo! and sent them my ALL of e-mail addresses in my address book.
A short while later, I (and everybody in my address book) received a notification that Wizards would be put on DVD and sold through Amazon.
Why am I telling you this?
BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MUCH I LIKED THIS MOVIE!
I saw it for the first time on Cinemax back around 1998. I searched for it online, but had NO clue what it was called. I finally found it about 6 years later. I REALLY wanted to see it again.
THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS!
Sure, the animation kind of stinks, but there were some revolutionary video effects in here and it's a true testament to what artistic directors and producers can do on a tight budget and time frame.
(I did feel bad when Ralph Bakshi thanks everyone who e-mailed Amazon in the commentary)

The Dark Star's crew is on a 20-year mission to destroy unstable planets and make way for future colonization. The smart bombs they use to effect this zoom off cheerfully to do their duty. But unlike Star Trek, in which order prevails, the nerves of this crew are becoming increasingly frayed to the point of psychosis. Their captain has been killed by a radiation leak that also destroyed their toilet paper. "Don't give me any of that 'Intelligent Life' stuff," says Commander Doolittle when presented with the possibility of alien life. "Find me something I can blow up." When an asteroid storm causes a malfunction, Bomb Number 20 (the most cheerful character in the film) has to be repeatedly talked out of exploding prematurely, each time becoming more and more peevish, until they have to teach him phenomenology to make him doubt his existence. And the film's apocalyptic ending, lifted almost wholly from Ray Bradbury's story "Kaleidoscope," has the remaining crew drifting away from each other in space, each to a suitably absurd end. Absurd, surreal, and very funny. John Carpenter once described Dark Star as "Waiting for Godot in space." Made at a cost of practically nothing, the film's effects are nevertheless impressive and, along with the number of ideas crammed into its 83 minutes, ought to shame makers of science fiction films costing hundreds of times more. The DVD contains both the original 68-minute release and the director's full version. --Jim Gay
Description
DARK STAR was originally intended to be a 68 minute film. Jack Harris, the Hollywood producer, convinced the filmmakers to shoot 15 minutes of extra footage and he released the expanded version theatrically in 1975 through Bryanston Pictures. In 1983, DARK STAR was re- issued to home video as a "Special Edition," created under the supervision and authorization of the filmmakers. This special version, featuring a new technically superior video transfer, had been edited by the filmmakers though, virtually removing all the extra footage. Now, once again for all DARK STAR purest, here is the full length theatrical release version, painstakingly restored, and sporting a new Dolby Digital Hi-Fi stereo sound track. Enjoy! In the mid twenty-first century, mankind has reached a point in its technological advances to enable colonization of the far reaches of the universe. DARK STAR is a futuristic scout ship traveling far in advance of colony ships. Armed with Exponential Thermosteller Bombs, it prowls the unstable planets. But there is one obstacle that its crew members did not count on -- one of the ship's thinking and talking bombs is lodged in the bay, threatening to destroy the entire ship and crew!

Or make your own: Take any DVD, say 2001, then dance on it with golf shoes for about thirty minutes and you approach the quality of this recording. Please tell me they're not all going out like this.
Very funny Sci-Fi.......2007-06-27
This is well worth getting. Starting out as a student picture for debut director John Carpenter, he turned out a minor classic on an absolute showstring budget.
The film is about the crew of a spaceship, whose purpose is to destroy planets making way for colonisation. The crew are very bored. To make things more interesting an Alien escapes from the hold and proceeds to torment one of the crew. This sequence is extremly funny. The other main area of the film revolves around a bomb that seems to have a mind of its own. The dialog between the bomb and the crew and the ships computer is very funny. The film finishes with what is probably a comedic reference to 2001.
For a film made on such a small budget Carpenter achieved mircles. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Alien was inspired to some degree by this film, and indeed Alien does reference Dark Star according to the IMDB and of course Dan O'Bannon was involved in both films. At 80 minutes long its the perfect length - there is no time for you to get bored. If there has been a better sci-fi comedy made I haven't seen it.
Hard SF fans.......2007-05-30
This film answers the question what do you do when your crew was scraped up from the people rejected for spaceflight, you are light years from home, your smart bombs are smarting off, a captured alien gets out of his pen, and your ship is falling apart.
It is a important film to see, not for the flashy special effects, there aren't any, but for the characterizations and plot lines. It is the obverse of the spit and polish of many SF films.
This does not portray the best and brightest in space, its more like putting fruits and nuts in a can and sending it into deep space for a mission nobody really cares about anymore.
Great movie.......2007-04-02
Knowing it was a glorified student film before I watched it, my expectations for Dark Star weren't very high. However, I was surprised by the script and subtle humor in the movie, and the small details and creative moviemaking used to make up for the low budget.
It wasn't a perfect movie, but its freshness and creativity make up for its flaws. Obviously Carpenter, O'Bannon, etc., all went on to have great careers, and made some great movies.
If you like "first movies", sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or any of the other work put out by the people involved in this movie, you should end up liking Dark Star. I thought it was great.
Budget Sci-Fi Parody.......2007-03-31
I first saw this movie when I was in college 30 years ago and loved it. It was made on a shoe-string budget and was John Carpenter's first full length movie release. It is a sci-fi comedy and parody. The special effects are obviously not up to today's standards, but they were pretty good for the time it was made. I think this movie actually presents space travel in a more realistic light than most other sci-fi shows I have seen. In this movie, systems on the ship are breaking down forcing the crew to come-up with work arounds, and the crew is going stir-crazy from spending years out in deep space. The government says they appreciate the important work the crew is doing, but doesn't want to send out a repair ship to help them because it is too expensive. While this probably done for comic effect, if we ever do develop long range space travel, you know this is how things will probably be.
All-in-all, while it is not as action packed as most of today's sci-fi movies, this is a funny movie with a different take on deep space travel.

Lego's Bionicle line has sprouted this complicated but impressive family movie, Bionicle: Mask of Light, to bolster the toys' mythic appeal. The story focuses on the robotic Matoran tribe from the island of Mata Nui, which is protected by six powerful guardians known as the Toa. Two small Matorans--one a potentially heroic "herald" and the other a historian-witness called "chronicler"--find a sacred mask of light, suggesting the imminent of arrival of a seventh Toa. Identifying that mystery figure proves difficult, however, especially with the evil spirit of shadows, Makuta, attacking Matorans with mechanized-crayfish warriors in a bid to possess the precious mask. This is the kind of out-of-nowhere, dense fantasy that requires one to get up to speed quickly on a lot of exotic detail, terms, history, etc. But Mask of Light is also enjoyable as expressive, CGI animation with thoughtful art design, striking color, and excellent vocal performances. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
This is awesome!.......2007-03-18
Out of all 3 movies, I think this one is the best. It is about this Matoran named Takua who finds a mask embedded in stone and he and his friend, Jaller, have been told by the Turaga that they must find the seventh toa. When Takua realizes he is the herald, he refuses the responsibility and tells the Turaga that Jaller is the herald. When Jaller persuades Takua to join him, the Turaga assume that Jaller wants Takua to put the story on the Wall of History. They were wrong. When Makuta tells Takua that if he doesn't give the mask to him, Jaller's life would be spared. After that, Takua quit the mission altogether. When the Rahkshi cornered them, the Toa Nuva came to help. When Turahk killed Jaller, Takua put on the mask, becoming Takanuva. Then with the help of the other Toa Nuva, they built the Ussanui. Takanuva used this to break into Mangaia, Makuta's lair. This severely damaged it. Then Makuta challenged Takanuva to a game of Kolhii. When Takanuva won, Makuta was furious. Then Takanuva pulled Makuta's mask off, sending both of them into a pool of energized protodermis. This made them Takutanuva, a form of Takanuva and Makuta. Takutanuva lifted a wall, letting the Toa and Hahli out of Mangaia. He brought Jaller back to life, but this weakened him. Only Takanuva was known to survive. This movie is the best!

AWESOME!.......2006-03-09
Being a die-hard bionicle fan, when I found this, I watched it several times. I thought it was excellent. Sure, a few details were off and such, but, overall, it's very good.
The beginning was very light-hearted, poking fun at Vakama, the Toa, and the dangers of kohli. As the movie went on, it became much darker.
I'm not gonna spoil it for those who haven't seen it. But, anyone can enjoy it. I know I did.
Not what I had In Mind..................2005-12-06
Let's get one thing straight. I loved bionicle legos and when i first heard of this movie, i was hyped up to buy it. but when i saw it, i was really disappointed. let's see how this movie is:

the voices are really cheesy. They don't fit the bionicles at all. I'd rather have no voices than any!
PLOT
Okay, they totally missed out on the original bionicles. They only focussed on the second bionicle design which is Ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE MUSIC
I have not much to say, but this music was.....................
.......... freaky.
OVERALL
this movie would of gotten a one star if the plot was bad nothing relating to the stories in the magazines or website. However, the plot was okay following a bit at the comics and websites. so this somewhat a "ok" movie. just be warned.

Fly with the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron in the breathtaking video The Magic of Flight, which explains the basic principles of what enables airplanes (and birds) to fly, what creates lift, how planes maneuver, how planes land again. Going back to the Wright Brothers' experiments at Kitty Hawk, the documentary explores how the intrepid bicycle makers ruminated on the elements of flight for many an hour before even attempting to assemble their first aircraft. The Blue Angels put into action the discoveries made by the Wright Brothers, as they make their selections, train, and perform.
Pilots push their high-performance fighter planes through difficult but graceful maneuvers for amazed air-show audiences, demonstrating where the state of the art really lies for 21st-century flying. For all the skills of the pilots, however, the most astonishing part of the video would have to be the camera work, with cameras mounted on the planes' bellies, noses, and cockpits to give an up-close view of what the machines are really capable of. Planes fly arm's length apart during maneuvers where the slightest misstep would mean certain catastrophe. The Magic of Flight does indeed go a long way toward capturing the wonder of flying, with spectacular camera work, editing, and production. --Jerry Renshaw

Great viewing for the whiole Family especially on a Home Theater PC.......2007-03-17
Great viewing for the whiole Family especially on a Home Theater PC and HDTV. This is HD at its best!!! educational and fun. A Classic.
it is okay..........2007-02-23
This should have been named "The Magic of Flight with the Blue Angels". Unfortuately it is mostly about the Blue Angels, and not as much about flight in general and the magic of flying. I do think the Blue Angels are fun to watch, so this movie is still pretty good, but it did not do much for my love of flying. The reason I say this is because I was hoping for something that was more in touch with my love for flying, which is smaller aircraft, not fighter jets. Another good title for this movie would be "the Blue Angels and the Air Show". Unless this is what you want to see, look for another movie.
An awesome look into the history of flight, carrier flight and the Blue Angels!.......2007-02-17
This film is both a visual and an historical masterpiece!
MoF takes you through the history of flight; from the Wright Brothers' first flight, to harrier jump jets, F-18 aircraft carrier landings/takeoffs, and the Blue Angels' rigorous training program!
Along the way, you are introduced to the basic theory of flight with impressive computer animations that illustrate how we were able to manipulate the wings of a plane in comparison to that of birds to create lift and control it.
The flight footage is absolutely stunning with no visual-effects. This film takes full advantage of IMAX, bringing you up-close and personal to the action.
I cannot find one thing negative to say about this film. It is an absolute MUST for your collection!
Fantastik!.......2007-01-26
What a great video. I connect a projector to my media center PC. Well worth the money if you have the equipment.
Take a High-Def Flight with Imax!.......2007-01-03
An absorbing video, full of action and interesting sequences.
Take-off and landing shots, from Aircraft carriers, were nail-biting highlights for me. With HD Imax imagery, and superb DTS sound,
you feel you are really there.

Originally broadcast as Legend of Earthsea in December 2004, the Sci-Fi Channel's four-hour miniseries of Earthsea rides the coattails of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with its quest-driven story of humble blacksmith Ged (Shawn Ashmore), a wizard-to-be who is mentored by the magical Ogion (Danny Glover) as he seeks to preserve the realm of Earthsea from the evil King Tygath (Sebastian Roché). Ged's adventures lead him to the priestess Tenar (Kristen Kreuk, from Smallville) and with secrets shared by High Priestess Thar (Isabella Rossellini), they gain the power to prevail over Tygath. As presented by Robert Halmi Sr. (producer of Merlin, Gulliver's Travels and several other fantasy miniseries), this skeletal rendering of Earthsea boasts a wealth of digital effects and semi-lavish set design, but Ashmore's lack of charisma hampers a production already fraught with problems. It provoked the wrath of fantasy fans and a firm rejection by author Ursula K. Le Guin, who had watched helplessly (she wasn't involved or consulted) as her classic novels A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan were racially "whitewashed" (in Le Guin's words) nearly beyond recognition. As TV fantasy goes, Earthsea is admirably ambitious, but best enjoyed by those with no awareness of the classic books it is very loosely based on. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Based on Ursula K. Le Guin's multiple award-winning classic tale comes this richly imagined epic mini-series. In the magical world of EarthSea, the Amulet of Peace has ensured harmony between humans and dragons for centuries. But when the Amulet is broken and a piece of it disappears, it's up to a neophyte wizard to restore balance and stop a nefarious king from conquering EarthSea's islands.
Customer Reviews:
Not that bad for a Sci-Fi Channel movie.......2007-05-30
Maybe I've just learned to keep very low expectations for anything the Sci-Fi Channel produces and I did expect to loathe this movie. Instead it had moments of charm, a few small laughs (not always intentional) and some good acting. It has been a very long time since I read the books but I did recognize that several key things were omitted, glossed over or barely touched on. But that was also true of Lord of the Rings when they omitted one of my favorite characters, Tom Bombadil.
Comparing this film to the Lord of the Rings is very unfair since almost nothing does compare to those epics. I'd rather compare it to the David Lynch version of Dune - so different as to hardly resemble the book other than place and character names and events. If you can manage to overcome those differences you can enjoy either movie, though I'd have to say Lynch's Dune is immensely better than the Earthsea movie.
If they did take liberties with the souce material, that's hardly new, no matter how regrettable it is. Every author has experienced this when their material goes to celluloid. I can't imagine how Heinlein would have reacted to the way they mangled Starship Troopers, yet that movie was entertaining enough despite that.
Overall, for a rainy day movie when there was nothing else on tv I found this to be adequate. Just don't expect anything like the books and remember, it's a Sci-Fi Channel production and they're responsible for some monumentally bad films. This isn't one of them fortunately, at least in my opinion and it has forced me to dig out my dog-eared copies of the original Earthsea books again.
Extremely dissapointing.......2007-05-08
If you are a fan of the books and expecting anything even remotely resembling the source material, step away from the keyboard now. Do not buy this DVD. It will anger you beyond words.
If you are looking for a rainy day, made for TV time killer, it's probably worth the $10...barely. In a nutshell the acting is serviceable (at least by the leads), the effects passable, the plot predictable and familiar, but the dialog is painful and the casting is absolutely horrible.
I am a huge fan of the books and bought this without reading the reviews first. Suffice to say that I wanted to throw my TV out the window within a half hour. But I was determined to watch it end to end, and once I was able to emotionally separate the original story from what I was watching, it became ... bearable.
All things considered, I can't recommend that anyone shell out their hard earned money for this product when so many vastly superior alternatives exist. If I didn't love the Earthsea books, it might have warranted two stars. As is, I can barely give it one.
Abomination.......2007-04-26
Imagine if Uwe Boll had made the Lord of the Rings trilogy instead of Peter Jackson. That's about the quality of film you get here. This pathetic effort to bring Ursula Le Guin's first two Earthsea books (A Wizard of Earthsea / The Tombs of Atuan) to the small screen is an abomination, a disgrace, and in insult to the author in every way. Any thinking person who has respect for the original works will have nothing to do with this production. Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books rank among the greatest works of fantasy ever written. They are also among the most unique and intellectual. The Sci-Fi production turned those books into generic fantasy that any hack could have written. There may be one compelling reason to see this production: It will show you exactly how not to adapt a book to film. It also might tell you something about how dumbed down American culture has become, that the people behind this production thought an eviscerated version of Le Guin's books were all the public could handle.
Why do I react so negatively to this production? Here are the major reasons in outline form:
1. Race is a central theme of LeGuin's Earthsea books. That theme was totally removed from the movie for no apparent reason. It would be like removing languages from Tolkien's work. In the books, the only white people in Earthsea are the Kargs. Everyone else is non-white, which is how Le Guin constructed her world for very specific reasons. She has called this production a "whitewashing" of Earthsea, and I personally think it was a gutless decision on the producers' part to do so.
2. The stories have been altered arbitrarily to create a generic adventure / fantasy movie at the expense of the book's main themes. Gender is also an issue in Le Guin's writing, and it not to be found here. Ged's entire maturation experience (a huge theme of the first book) is made meaningless by the plot changes in this movie. He never has to pay the price for what he does. The lesson that there is a price or a reaction for everything you do is largely forgotten. The producers show now respect for the book by rearranging seemingly small details at will. They even get Ged's name wrong! His true name is Ged, not Sparrowhawk.
3. Even in technical terms this is a bad film. The acting, with maybe the exception of Danny Glover, is wooden. The dialog is unnatural. The settings are generic. The effects are substandard (the dragon is nearly laughable). The characters (not Le Guin's...the film's) are not believable and give the audience little reason to care about them.
I could go on, but you probably get the idea by now. Look up Ursula Le Guin's personal website, and read what she has to say on the subject. She says it far better than I can.
Imploding magic.......2007-04-17
Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books are full of magic, mystery, philosophy and intensely powerful storytelling.
But you wouldn't know it by this lackluster adaptation. Instead, "Earthsea" aspires to be "Harry Potter" in a medieval "Lord of the Rings" setting, with two plots mishmashed haphazardly into one, shoddy special effects, laughable action scenes, and some seriously wooden acting.
Rebellious, impatient Ged (Shawn Ashmore) attracts the attention of the wizard Ogion (Danny Glover) when he magically rescues his village from raiders. He joins Ogion as an apprentice, but soon proves too impatient -- and so Ogion sends him to the wizard school on Roke, where Ged soon proves to be one of the most gifted pupils. But his pride and anger become his undoing, when he accidentally summons a foul demon.
Meanwhile on the island of Atuan, the High Priestess (Isabella Rossellini) is slowly wasting away, and she hastily selects her successor, teenage Tenar (Kristin Kreuk). What no one knows is that the king of the Kargides is having her poisoned, and his priestess lover is trying to find a way into the labyrinth below, where the dangerous Nameless Ones are kept. To save all of Earthsea, Ged must brave its most terrifying dangers.
"Earthsea" basically is two books' worth of plots crammed together, but not well -- the entire tone is changed to "Harry Potter in Middle-Earth," with the plucky wizard pupil on a roadtrip with his funny chubby buddy against the forces of evil. The entire time at Roke just reeks of Hogwarts.
Even if judged purely on its own merits, "Earthsea" is still a disaster -- the direction is clunky, and the special effects are amateurish at best. Moments that should have been brilliant, such as Ged's climactic confrontation with the Gebbeth, fall flat. By the time we get to the drippy, sentimental climax, the entire plot spirals into a Disneyesque lovefest that is nothing short of nauseating.
And the script isn't much better. In fact, it's simply atrocious, full of unintentionally hilarious moments (a lisping dragon), deus ex machinae, a surprisingly silly demonic threat, and horribly written cliched dialogue ("So this is our destiny?" "If not us, then who?"). When Vetch and Ged dress up as Kargides to fool an idiot commander, you know the movie has hit rock bottom.
It doesn't help that Ashmore and Kreuk are tolerable actors at best, but they get progressively more wooden as the plot continues. They're only saved by the greater talent of the other actors -- Chris Gauthier is lovable AND smart as Ged's best buddy, and Glover and Alan Scarfe are given too little to do as some paternal old wizards. (And Amanda Tapping has a split-second cameo)
Isabella Rossellini deserves special credit as High Priestess Thar. I'm not sure what an actress of her caliber is doing in a movie like "Earthsea," but she saves every scene she's in -- she's warm, kindly, wise, powerful and devastating in her disapproval.
The Sci Fi Channel tried to have it all in "Earthsea," but ended up with a muddled mess that tries to be everything, and ends up with nothing. Cliched, cutesy and only redeemed a little by some good acting.
I thought this was a GREAT story........2007-03-26
I don't know why so many people didn't like this movie. I thought that it was a great movie that was mixed with Harry Potter, The Mysts of Avalon, Merlin and Krull. I loved the story and I thought that the story was very straight forward and easy to understand. I also didn't think that it was predictable. Sorry guys, I don't agree with the rest of the reviews. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes SciFi Channel movies and to anyone that likes fantasy movies as well.

Description
The Magic Never Ends - The Life & Work of C.S. Lewis is the first-ever major network biography profiling the man whom many consider "the greatest Christian writer of the 20th centrury". This critically acclaimed film explores his numerous works as a Christian apologist and follows Lewis from his boyhood in Belfast through his service in World War I and his rise to prominence as one of the most notable literary figures of the 20th century. This stunning, visual portrayal of Lewis' life delves into his life-changing friendship with fellow professor J.R.R. Tolkien and his short yet uniquely powerful marage to Joy Davidman. The Magic Never Ends includes extensive interviews with Lewis' stepson Douglas Gresham, Wheaton College scholars Lyle Dorsett and Christopher Mitchell, Debra Winger (the critically acclaimed actess who portrayed Joy Davidman in the Richard Attenborough film Shadowlands) and Lewis' one time personal assistant Walter Hooper. The film also features the rich, EMY award-winning soundtrack from composer David Barrett. Airing nationwide on PBS. 2003 MOVIEGUIDE Faith & Values Award, 2002 UNDA Gabriel Award winner for "Best Documentary".

Perhaps the Perfect C.S. Lewis Documentary.......2007-03-01
The beauty of the Oxford campus and the natural wildness of the English countryside is captured in especially warm images. This documentary goes into more details and shows C.S. Lewis' home on a sunny day with a garden in full bloom. The camera sweeps across Oxford, showing statues, focusing in on the detailing on iron gates and shows people wandering about on Addison's walk.
Within the story of his life, Lewis Scholars present their ideas about his life and give glowing testimonials of his work. They explain how the unifying elements in his writing gives them appeal to all denominations and comment on how he would have reacted to his work being adapted for film.
It is fun to learn about how he loved to read Medieval romances and that he responded to all his letters while he continued to teach and publish even more books. His friendship with Tolkien is briefly discussed and they mention how Tolkien disliked the mixing of mythologies. They also show original drawings and pictures from the The Chronicles of Narnia.
In the past few years I've been researching more of the life of C.S. Lewis and have begun to read more of his work. "The Magic Never Ends" is perhaps the perfect C.S. Lewis Biography for those interested in his scholarly pursuits. There are also quite a few extras to enjoy:
Introduction to C.S. Lewis
Tour of The Kilns
Tour of the Cotswolds and Oxford University
Interview with the Writer/Director
Bibliography - A section that includes a listing of 38 books written by C.S. Lewis and numerous books written about his life. My personal favorites are "A Grief Observed," and "Mere Christianity."

One of the best!.......2005-12-10
I saw this last night on PBS and was very pleased with the presentation. I was almost afraid to watch as I am used to seeing the courage and faith and humanity of well known people debunked (probably in an effort to make the documentary more interesting) but it didn't happen here. Even the wild speculation about a possible intimate relationship between Lewis and Mrs. Moor w
