Before the mid-1950s, science fiction was mostly confined to kid-stuff serials such as Buck Rogers; the things they portrayed were considered pure fantasy, pie in the sky. By 1950, however, things had changed. World War II had brought the German V-2 rocket (the template for many a '50s sci-fi rocket ship), television, and of course, the bomb. Sabrejets and MiGs were doing battle over Korea, and science fiction had become fact. Rocketship X-M (the X-M standing for Expedition: Moon), though primitive and cheap, has a place in film history as being the movie that initiated the '50s science fiction boom. A crew of four men and one woman embark for the moon, but when all are knocked unconscious, the rocket goes into a drift and they wind up on Mars instead. On the pinkish Mars, they encounter a race of extremely ticked-off cavemen who don't want them there and kill off three of their number. Certainly the effects are quaint (the astronauts and ground control communicate via surplus WWII radio equipment), the story a little ridiculous, and the acting stiff--but this was the first serious science fiction movie and was the inspiration for countless films that followed. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

The 50th Anniversary Edition of Kurt Neumann's science fiction classic. Four men and a girl blast into space on mankind's first expedition to the Moon. But due to a cataclysmic event in space, their ship is sent hurling out of control towards the planet Mars. Suspenseful terror as the crew fights for their life on a war-ravaged world with radiation-riddled nightmare creatures! The climax makes this one of the most powerful and unforgettable science fiction movies ever made. "Rocketship X-M" was deftly brought to the screen by famed writer/director Kurt Neumann. Long considered the definitive space exploration film of the 50's, a genuine classic with a power that has spanned the decades. Includes Trailer.

4 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS MUSIC SCORE.......2007-05-02

Ferde Grofe, certainly one of the best known American symphonic composers, was hired to write the music score for ROCKETSHIP X-M. He was paid $1500 to turn in what may be the best sci-fi score for the movies. When you watch the film, tune in to the heroic main title (which is repeated, in part, later), the "weightless" sound in certain scenes, the romantic theme for Floyd and Lisa, and the eerie sound as the crew discovers they are headed for Mars. After the landing, Grofe uses part of some music he wrote for his "Symphony in Steel," and combines it with the use of the Theremin to create an unworldly sound indeed. On the trip back, the solar opera aspect of this movie is emphasized with the music setting the exact mood it should do for the tragedies encountered. This is a great score, worthy of re-recording in today's sound.
And, if you want to hear another score Grofe wrote for the same studio (Lippert) in 1950, get a copy of THE RETURN OF JESSE JAMES, another worthy listen.

4 out of 5 stars Just like its' music........2007-04-14

If you listen to the music for the movie it sounds like a grand adventure is taking place and then it all ends on a crash of sour notes. What do I mean? Well, they embark on the grand adventure of being the first ones to take ship for the moon--and wind up on mars. On their way back they crash...just like the music. I liked it. It shows just how serious people took the possibilitly of space flight back in the early fiftys.

PROS:

1. None of the attempted indept characterization you usually get in todays movies where you have fifty main characters and only two hours to tell each ones' story--they use that for filler today, somebody told those
hacks in Hollywood it was good writing. No, 77 minutes of short, sweat, and to the point. They do use characterization but they don't use it as filler.

2. An interesting idea and the actors are acting.

3. The required meteor swarm--all science fiction movies seem to have them. I seem to remember they put them in because they really didn't know what else bad could happen to you up there. (Just remember, I didn't say Heinlein wrote this.)

4. Through a twist or two of fate they wind up making a landing on Mars. By the way, its starts raining when they stop. I think someone should have muttered '...ionizing the atmosphere as we came down....' might have passed the pop science of the day.

5. Another interesting thing was they discovered life on Mars and it had been destroyed by atomic wars. The question was if a big meteor had smashed them...no everything is being radiated so it was war destroyed them.

six. They find the destroyed remains of a civilization. Interesting in that they pick up a few objects and look at them. What were they...who knows? You remember the time machine with Rod Taylor and how the spinning rings were a big interesting thing and help make the movie because they told of how it all happened. Well, the artifacts are that kind of 'interesting'. Too bad there were not more. I figured that first one they uncovered was a tomb stone.

7. They find the remainder of the humanoid-like people of Mars. The one who threw the ax and killed the scientiest appeared to still have blisters on his back and the girls is blind. Obviously the dying remainder of the thousand year dead civilization still live close to their nuclear blasted cities. I've got to tell you all, this is actually original stuff for hollywood. Despite having rain, dry gulches that must sometimes have water, human like people, no space suits and a space ship capable of reaching Mars -- using chemical rockets-- but less than a hundred feet tall...it is still interesting. I guess it's that short, sweat, and to the point thing.

I don't think I'll tell you any more and ruin it for you.

CONS:

1. Humm. I don't find movies that are dead serious cheezy or campy...this movie is 'dead serious'.

Therefore, I give this movie five stars because they tried hard to make it a serious movie with limited facts about the surface of Mars. The actors did a fine job, the idea is fine and interesting and carried out seriously. No, I don't think more money would have helped. No, they need more information about space, acceleration, and the surface of Mars.
All sins are forgiven, it is a fine movie and should be view as science fiction drama. No popcorn this time...I think I'll read the bible.

5 out of 5 stars Rocketship XM.......2007-03-09

Great movie for it's time. Seem's so old fashioned in light of moder technology, but was way ahead of it's time. Even them outer space was fasinating. Cast did a great job to make it look very real.

4 out of 5 stars I thought the ending was cool.......2006-09-30

In the context that this film was made in (during the 1950's), it's not too bad of a movie. The ending surprised me as well. Space travel was a lot more dangerous back then. Men were real men, and women were real women. And who doesn't love rocketships? Anyone interested in 1950's sci-fi should see this one for sure.

3 out of 5 stars 1950s popcorn movie.......2006-05-07

It's the first manned rocket, ready to go. Of course, they'll need somewhere to go to, and the moon is right there. Unfortunately, they make a wrong turn and end up on Mars. They were so close to each other, y'know, it was a natural mistake.

If you can go along with that much, you might enjoy this artifact of the 1950s. It's not so much a movie as a series of stereotypes strung together. The rocket's instrument panel would be familiar to anyone who had seen cockpit panels in WWII movies, right down to the artificial horizon (relative to what?) and airspeed indicator, despite lack of air. There are a few zero-G scenes, but weightlessness seems to apply only to objects and not to people. Mars itself is a lot like Earth, but with a Theremin and an orange filter. And that poor leading lady - she could be a woman or a scientist, but not both at once.

Broad stereotypes and bad science, what a combination. If you've got a rainy afternoon some time, pop the popcorn and go ahead. They just don't make them like this anymore - and that may be a good thing.

Daring reporter John Lawrence (Robert Clarke) narrates this gripping tale of an alien's attempt to take over a tiny village in Scotland. As the story opens, Lawrence is visiting his old friend, Professor Elliot, who's made the startling discovery of a new planet that is approaching Earth at breakneck speed. Soon Elliot's lovely daughter, Enid, has spotted a mysterious craft in the middle of the moor. Lawrence and Elliot decide to investigate, inexplicably allowing the clearly evil Dr. Mears to assist. Lost the plot? Not to worry! The Man from Planet X cheerfully helps slower viewers by offering expository dialogue as frequently as humanly possible. "Look!" says Elliot, "It seems as if he's trying to turn that knob to the right, but doesn't have the strength or coordination," as the alien tries to turn the knob to the right, but doesn't have the strength or coordination. All seems lost as the alien begins using telepathy to control the local villagers. Luckily for the Earth, the alien's superior mind-control powers are not matched with superior common sense--he never bothers to give his slaves such crucial commands as "Don't tell the enemy my entire plan!" or "Let me know if any outsiders show up!" or "By the way, don't follow the commands of anybody but me!" A guaranteed hoot of an evening. --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars Classic Sci-fi.......2007-04-30

Three of the most wonderful alien invasion movies of all time were made in 1950's. "The Day The Earth Stood Still," "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers," and, "The Man From Planet X." Each of these films are dvd must haves. "The Man From Planet X" is a film response among others to social issues as well as the public interest and fears of numerous ufo sightings during that time period i.e. "UFOs Buzz the White House" and of course Roswell. The same thing has been going on for the past several years. Kecksburg Incident, Phoenix Lights...Signs, Independence Day, Close Encounters of the Third Kind...Whatever the case, I was extremely pleased with my purchase. It was delivered within 3 days of purchase.

4 out of 5 stars The hour is near and The Man from Planet X will be waiting.......2006-08-06

The story is mostly narrated by a newspaperman John Lawrence (Robert Clarke) that also takes part in an adventure that we now hear only as a rumor. It takes place in 1951 on an isolated Scottish island near the end of the world (in more ways than one). A planet (Planet X) is approaching ours and they seam to have sent a vanguard for what purpose we do not know.

To fathom this out is a renowned scientist Professor Elliot (Raymond Bond) his demure daughter Enid (Margaret Field) and the newspaperman. Also aboard the characters is Dr. Mears (William Schallert) who has a nefarious past and should have gotten twenty years. Friend or foe what will we find? And how will Dr. Mears communicate?

As Planet X approaches the hour is near and The Man from Planet X will be waiting.

3 out of 5 stars 1950's entertaining S-F.......2006-05-24

"The Man From Planet X" is a low-budget black and white 1950 science-fiction movie, one of the earliest of the genre that included "The Thing," "Them," etc. I believe this VHS edition was released in 2000 and it is a good quality transfer, full screen with no closed captioning. As for the quality of the movie itself, do you really have to ask? I first saw it when I was eleven and I thought it was very scary and atmospheric, with all that fog blowing across the Scottish moors late at night, and the grotesque alien peering out of the porthole of his tiny spacecraft. The production designer did a nice job with an obviously minimal budget, and the lighting, settings, and costumes do contribute to the suspenseful atmosphere. The movie has all the usual 1950's S-F cliches, including the strange object approaching the Earth, the wise old scientist and his beautiful daughter who falls in love with the courageous investigating reporter and who screams piercingly and predictably at the sight of the hideous visitor from space, and so forth. If you're in the mood, and if movies like this could draw you to the theater during your childhood, you'll enjoy it. And it's fun to be eleven again.

2 out of 5 stars Scarey Alien.......2006-02-01

I haven't seen this one yet, but from what I understand, the Alien bears an uncanny resemblance to the Kid From Deliverance. Now THAT's worth watching!

5 out of 5 stars Classic '50s scifi.......2005-11-04

Like another reviewer, I too was scared to the living daylights by this film. Born in 1951, I remember seeing it on a snow covered afternoon (probably during the same time I was exposed to Howard Hawks' "The Thing"). For months afterward, I had visions of looking behind my bed for the "Man from Planet X" (why he would visit me is beyond comprehension). However, to the movie itself: filmed in black and white, it is a strange film, more a mystery than a techno scifi thriller. It is a Brit film, which may explain the unique feel of the film. The alien's spacesuit is traditional for the early '50s (bubble helmet, backpack, etc. The use of "music" as an inter-planetary language is unique (Speilberg was perhaps influenced by this film in this respect re: close encounters). The spaceship also resembled the ship in "E.T.", so there might be some comparison here. If fact, both this film and E.T. center on the "misunderstanding" between two interplanetary cultures. Interesting. This film is great for its atmosphere of early '50s scifi and should not be missed. Although this might be pushing the point, the eventual discovery that the alien, although an unknown creature, was not a threat, had true resonance during the cold war. Highly recommended if you prefer atmosphere over special effects.

4 out of 5 stars Good two-fer for monster movie fans.......2007-01-19

Great double-feature for a dull evening: two classic "guys in rubber suits" monster films featuring much destruction of toy cities, improbable plot twists, and hysterically bad dialogue. Fun for kids, and depending on the amount and quantity of intoxicants or whether you're just plain odd, for adults too.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fun Gamera flick, but Gappa..........2006-02-25

Gamera flicks have rarely been known to be good movies, but Gamera vs. Jiger (or Monster X) isn't half bad...of course, it isn't half good, either, but it's entertaining enough for the kiddies, and has some rather creative elements, but, like all of the Showa Gamera R1 dvd's, the transfer is absolutely horrid, but the dubbing is only somewhat painful. Get it to complete your collection.
As for Gappa, aka "Monster From a Prehistoric Planet," it's a nifty extra treat for kaiju fans...if you enjoy absolutely awful dubbing and rather sub-par SPFX. The Gappa monsters themmselves are basically combinations of Godzilla and Rodan, but they're still pretty creative (especially their roars).
Overall, a decent disc, considering that it's the best that we're going to get here in the US.

2 out of 5 stars Not The Best in Showa Gamera Series.......2005-12-08

The movie is slow and it takes a while before it gets going, but when it does, the movie is pretty good. It has a classic scene when Gamera puts electric poles in his ears to block out the high frequency noise. It's funny to watch him fight Jiger a.k.a. Monster X with electric poles sticking out of his ears! Overall pretty good, but definitely not the best out of the Showa series.

3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2005-11-12

I'll do each in different catagories.

GAMERA VS. MONSTER X
When a group of ignorent explorers accidentally unleash a demon powerful enough to destroy all life, Gamera must confront the beast and stop the end of the world. Jiger(aka Monster X) is a cool foe of Gamera's and can be safely said as one of Gamera's much tougher opponents. The dubbing is aweful, the acting is mediocre, and there are a few obvious fight mess ups unedited(when Gamera's head starts to lean offly far to the right in the second battle), but the movie has a solid outline and is very creative compared to some of the movies in the saga. Definately one of the better Showa Gamera films. OVERALL: A

MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET
The Japanese remake of "Goro", the film is about exxplorers who uncover a baby dinosaur and bring it back to Tokyo. The baby monster's parents wake up, realizing the baby is gone, and head for Japan in rage. This film is very droll and long. The two parent monsters are ok, but the baby Gappa is hidious and pathetic. Another Minya, if you will. The destruction parts are cool, though. OVERALL: D+

DVD
This DVD is fairly poor in quality. There are sadly no extras and the video is mediocre. Not much of a DVD. The audio is pretty good, unlike the video. OVERALL: C-

IN TOTAL
This is not the best DVD out there. If you are going to buy this, get it only for the Gamera film. OVERALL: C

4 out of 5 stars Gamera vs Monster X.......2005-09-19

My favorite kaiju movie I almost forgot, I saw this movie once when I was a child & liked it. But they never gave it again. I finally found it here at Amazon. And was taken back to happier times {Ah to be young and oblivious} But I digress. This Dvd has good audio quality and good video quality, on a scale of 1 - 10 I give it a 9. Only thing that sucks is after I sent for it I found it at the Dollar Tree dollar store, as a double feature with War of the monsters.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2007-04-29

I just watched this yesterday, with very low expectations, and was pretty surprised at how good it was. Definitely worth viewing, esp if you can track it down on a multi-movie set. (The transfer used in Mill Creek's Sci-Fi Classics box set is just fine.)

Others have talked about the story and the acting, but I want to mention is the non-stop use of special effects. Sure, they're hokey, but they keep coming, and that's what keeps your (or at least my) interest. There's the ping-pong-table Moon base, complete with whirling radar dish; plenty of spaceship shots, a space walk, meteor shower, invisible asteroid, shrinking astronaut/tiny people, Rock of Oblivion... and that's not even mentioning the monster. I don't think 3 minutes pass by in this movie without some "special effect" or other. That makes for pretty fun, engaging viewing, in my opinion.

Also, you can practically count the future Star Trek episodes... The one with the hollow asteroid traveling across space... The one where Kirk and Spock engage in mortal combat... The one where the girl falls for Kirk. (Oh wait, that's all of them.) And so on. Even the Rock of Oblivion acts suspiciously like the transporter, set on one-way of course.

All in all this is a fun film that rarely flags, perfect for a rainy weekend afternoon.

Dan Fredericks stars as Capt. Frank Chapman is launched away into space when Earth discovers an undiscovered planet which appears in the solar system. Chapman crash lands his ship on the surface of the planet, gets out and falls unconsious. A race of tiny people who find Chapman lying there on the ground. He wakes up sees them and eventually shrinks to tiny form. He is taken into the place where they all live. He's giving tests of strength and so forth. They tiny people possess the technology to move their planet from galaxy to galaxy to evade their enemies. Soon their enemies the Solarites, Chapman helps them in their aid to help them save the day. 'Twas an interesting watch. The Solarite was hilarious and hey Richard Kiel (Eegah!, The Longest Yard) plays the part...whooo! Fredericks wasnt that bad actually in his role and ze women were lovely to look at. A terribly silly hokey pokey adventure. Also starring Coleen Gary, Anthony Dexter, Francis X. Bushman, Richard Weber and Al Jarvis

3 out of 5 stars Somewhere Under the Rainbow.......2006-03-20

This movie is has its moments. Some aspects are interesting to watch. Others are not. The movie falls just short of the mark to be classic. The movie is also just good enough to keep it out of the garbage category. Viewers who enjoy classic science fiction movies of the 40s and 50s may appreciate the better qualities of this movie.

Space ships keep disappearing. A viewer gets to learn that the reason for the disappearances is an asteroid populated by people who have the technology to keep the asteroid invisible. At the beginning of the movie we see a space ship which is being accelerated at 11 g's. Though the ship is accelerating at 11 g's, the men on board have little problem moving and are awake and alert. The technology of the future is amazing. Today, pilots pass out somewhere around 8 or 9 g's, and movement is very difficult.

On the other hand, the cockpit of the space ship was outstanding. Some of the instruments made little sense, but the controls were nicely arranged, and a number of features made this cockpit above average for science fiction movies of the late 50s and early 60s.

A short time later the two crewmen on the space ship are walking about on the exterior of the ship without restraints. It appears that the men are pulled toward this ship as though there was gravity toward the ship. The men's shoes looked a lot like street shoes.

Captain Frank Chapman (Dean Fredericks) survives the crash of his ship on the mysterious asteroid. Chapman stumbles from his ship and swears he sees little people about the size of those in Lilliput. After opening his helmet, Chapman too shrinks to the size of the little people, which has something to do with the atmosphere of the asteroid and the fields surrounding the asteroid. We later discover that the name of the asteroid is Rayton.

The little people speak English because all languages on Rayton are translated through voice tone waves, or something like that. I love scientific gobbledygook double-speak. We need the English because Chapman is suddenly part of some kind of love quadrangle. Liara (Coleen Gray) is the hot blonde babe who is a social climber. Zetha (Delores Faith) is a beautiful mute babe who is shy and has a major crush on Chapman. Exposure to an enemy Solarite warrior caused Zetha to become mute. The other guy in this is Herron (Anthony Dexter), who loves Liara, though she is fickle.

After some fighting and the usual male bonding, Chapman and Herron become great friends. The people of Rayton realize that Chapman is an all right guy, so they decide, after a huge fight with the Solarites involving lots of hand movements over lighted plastic (which controlled their fields and weapons) that it is time for Chapman to go home. But wait, a critical fight scene with a captured Solarite has to happen. I actually felt sorry for the Solarite, who was played by Richard Kiel. The costume apparently had poor visibility because Kiel had a hard time walking down stairs or moving in general. By coincidence, I also just reviewed "Eegah," yet another Kiel movie that Kiel would probably like to forget. At least in this movie you could not see his face.

Eventually Chapman is repatriated and the movie ends, but not before the most awful audio effects I have ever heard in a movie. Many movies use an echo effect or reverberation effect for the narrator. In this case, the narrator literally repeated the same lines over and over, with the volume reduced each time. The ending was like an Ed Wood moment for this film.

This movie has too much hokum to qualify as a classic. However, it still has its moments and I recommend it to people who like science fiction movies of the 50s. Just be sure to keep your expectations low. If you believe there were only six good science fiction movies made in the entire 1950s, I can guarantee you that this movie was not one of them. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars Well there's really not much to say here...........2006-03-06

Well there's really nothing much to say about this flick. It's a classic, late atomic age sci-fi space adventure that our parents probably went to see at the drive-in while they were dating. This movie had a lot of potential to be a `so bad it's good' movie, but it's just a forgettable piece of celluloid that's been all but forgotten except for us few fans who live for these kooky old movies.

Space explorers end up missing when they enter a particular section of space. So in steps our gallant hero. He's a tall blond due who does a few scenes without his shirt (typical for these films). There's also a lot of sci-fi gibberish that's also a norm for these films.

Well here's the plot. Our hero crash lands on an asteroid planet where he is immediately shrunken to the size of a bug. This is easily explained by the planet's inhabitants. The strong magnetic force of the planet makes everything small. OK then.

Well we have a fight scene between a jealous suitor and our hero. It seems the love interest is a mute girl who I know I've seen before in other movies and the ruler's daughter. The fight is comic relief at best. The two men must use a brace to push each other onto gravity pads. If you step on the pad the magnetic pull is so great you will disintegrate. (Like I said Sci-Fi gibberish at it's best. The whole movie talks about high magnetism).

Well the finale is the attack from the space aliens. They fly on space ships resembling flaming arrows on strings. Of course the director's probably forgot that since there is no oxygen in space, there cannot be fire, but who's keeping track of this stuff? It is reveiled to us , the fortunate viewer, that an alien had been captured from a past battle. He is being held prisoner. How you ask? I'll let you guess. Yes that's right. He's being held in a cell consisting of a highly magnetized force field. Our Ed Wood moment comes when the power goes out and our alien friend escapes. Check out how he walks down the stairs. The actor obviously could not see where he was going and needs to reassure his footing with each step.

Well the aliens are defeated, and our hero is rescued by yet another rescue party. The final scene is our heart broken hero who has nothing to remember his love interest but a small pebble.

Folks this is definitely not Cat Women of the Moon.

4 out of 5 stars Roddenberry on patrol.......2005-09-01

I have given this DVD only 4 stars because it was too short!!! Excellent fun. Tongue in cheek. Good to see some of the actors again. Must have for all Trekkies.

3 out of 5 stars Fun to watch...but not original.......2004-07-12

The cast of Star Trek salute Gene Roddneberry's life as a policeman seeking inspiration for a sci-fi series he's writing. The story is vaguely similar to "George Lucas In Love" and I am surprised no one got sued.

It has it's fun moments. The outakes are hilarious though.

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD I've ever seen.......2004-07-03

I'm surprised to see so many favorable comments on this insipid DVD. I thought it was a total waste of my money, 17 minutes of sheer stupidity (that's right, a 17-minute movie for the price of a full-length feature). There's nothing clever about this so-called parody, and barely anything that's even halfway funny. A Star Trek parody is a wonderful idea, but this idea fails miserably in its execution.
Don't waste your money on this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Make another one but longer.......2004-03-20

This movie takes Star Trek to a new level! Just when you thought this franchise was almost dead someone comes up with a fresh and funny story. The only thing that I found wrong with this movie is it should have been a full length feature. The outtakes were just as good as the movie. I hope we see more from these guys. Paramount should hire these guys to do Enterprise it would be allot better.

5 out of 5 stars Roddenberry Lives On.......2004-03-12

Though skeptical of parodies in general, This parody was excellent. Very well done and hilarious. Seeing Star Trek actors saluting The Great Bird Of The Galaxy is Excellent.
The idea of creating characters from the characters you meet in everyday life on the streets is inspirational.
The Great Bird would be proud.
