The Nativity Story is a remarkable, if frustratingly restrained, act of imagining the tale of Christ's birth as a flesh-and-blood drama actually set in Israel two millenia ago. Written by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester) and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), the film makes very strong impressions in a scene-by-scene way. Beginning with the slaughter (bloodlessly portrayed; this is a PG movie) of Bethlehem's innocents under orders from a paranoid King Herod (a dark and knowing Ciarán Hinds), the film then jumps back a year to the prophecy that informs Zechariah (Stanley Townsend) that his wife, Elizabeth (Shohreh Aghdashloo), will bear a child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's cousin, the adolescent Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes), struggles with her family to make ends meet and is promised to the carpenter Joseph (Oscar Isaac). Soon comes word to Mary, via an angel, that she will carry, while still a virgin, the long-awaited Messiah who will liberate the Jews from Herod and his Roman benefactors. Thus begins a detailed account of Joseph and Mary's hard travel to Bethlehem, while three Magi spend months crossing the desert trying to rendezvous with some point below the convergence of three heavenly bodies in the night sky. Hardwicke and Rich anchor all this in period detail, though what proves most moving are relationship nuances, especially the friendship and trust that emerge between Mary and Joseph after he is told in a dream that she speaks truthfully about her miraculous pregnancy. While The Nativity Story should appeal to almost anyone as a straightforward narrative, it is far from a secular version of the familiar Biblical tale, and thus feels a bit stifled. It might have been nice if the film could have breathed a little more with imagination, but The Nativity Story makes up for it by ingeniously weaving hints of things to come, later in Christ's life, into the action. --Tom Keogh

Description

It was the cruelest of times. Under Herod's torturous reign, families struggled to survive and yet, in the midst of utter turmoil, a young woman's faith is put to the test. Join Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) on an incredible journey of hope and discovery. Epic in its scope, yet intimate in it's portrayal of this historical family, this "wonderful film" (Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun Times) is "a family feature that will be cherished for years to come!" (Greg Russell, WMYD-TV, Detroit).

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and surprisingly moving look at the story of Jesus' birth.......2007-07-07

When you're talking about film adaptations of the story of Christ's birth, the old rubric "if you've seen one, you've seen them all" just does not apply. That is especially the case with The Nativity Story, a truly wonderful film that conveys great spiritual power, even as it brings home the humanity of Mary and Joseph to a degree few of its predecessors ever even attempted. Keisha Castle-Hughes is wonderful as young Mary, but I tend to look upon this film as Joseph's story, and Oscar Isaac is more than up to the task of bringing this humble carpenter to vivid life.

The Nativity Story basically tells the story of Mary and Joseph from the time Mary is betrothed and then finds out she is to give birth to God's Son up through the time of Jesus' birth and the family's evacuation to Egypt. It does an exceptional job of humanizing Mary and Joseph. At 14, Mary is on the brink of womanhood, and early on we are treated with several moments showing us a glimpse of the normal child she was. Her sudden betrothal to Joseph is not something she welcomes, but we see it as a reality of family survival in those troubled times under the double domination of Herod and Rome. When the angel appears to her, she accepts the good news he brings - yet she doesn't completely believe it until she finds her much older cousin Elizabeth carrying the child who would be Jesus' messenger. Her most trying time comes when she returns home. A lot of adaptations tend to gloss over this part. Put yourself in her place, though - she's a 14-year-old girl, betrothed to a good man, who returns home with a child she claims to have been miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit. Her story was even less plausible back then than it would be today. Suddenly, she is a pariah of sorts, looked down upon by all who know her, her very future very much in doubt.

The thing I loved most about this film is the depth of its portrayal of Joseph. All too often, Joseph gets short shrift in the story of Christ's birth, but this film has one of the best characterizations of Joseph I've ever seen. Obviously mortified by Mary's pregnancy, he refuses to accuse her (thus very probably saving her life). Even after he is visited by an angel and told that Mary is indeed carrying the Son of God, it takes a lot of courage for him to take Mary as his wife and to claim a child that is not his. On the long and hard road to Bethlehem, we see many small yet all-encompassing examples of his sacrifice for Mary and the Child. After their arrival and frantic effort to find a room, it is Joseph who delivers the child himself. The bond that grows between he and Mary is one of this film's many great strengths.

The portrayal of the three Wise Men from the East is especially interesting, as they sometimes serve up a few bits of comic relief. One of them, for example, is less than enthused about actually traveling to Judea to find the child whose birth they have predicted based upon their study of the stars (with the star of Bethlehem being attributed to the rare convergence of three heavenly bodies). It really was a hard journey, requiring several months of travel across deserts and mountains. By conveying their journey basically in its entirety, this film produced in me a new level of respect for these men and their significance in the story of Jesus' birth.

The final half hour of the film pretty much blew me away. The light of the Star shining down on the manger, the depiction of the shepherds, the arrival of the Magi - it all really brings home the significance of this newborn baby. As if that isn't enough, the story also features some subtle and profound foreshadowing of later events in Jesus' life. For Christians, the film is truly a blessing, but even nonbelievers should appreciate the poignancy of the story, the fine acting, and the excellent cinematography - and everyone should welcome the opportunity to glance into the rearview mirror of time and get a sense of life as it was just over two thousand years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful depiction of Christ's birth.......2007-07-07

The story of the Nativity has been told and retold, yet somehow this movie manages to make it seem new, by an honest and moving retelling of the story of the birth of Christ. Following the accounts told in the Bible by Matthew and Luke, the filmmakers create a dignified depiction of the events and the people surrounding Christ's birth. The shame of Mary's pregnancy is shown from the point of view of Joseph and Mary's parents. After an angel appears to Joseph and explains that Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, his relationship with Mary grows in a beautiful way. The film makers wisely resist Hollywood glitz and keep the story simple and human, while still impressing viewers with the importance of the world-changing event they are re-enacting.

5 out of 5 stars More than a story.......2007-07-05

I bought this for my daughter and her Pastor husband as a gift for the birth of their son. They watched it together after she got home from the hospital and THEY LOVED IT.

It is predominantly biblically accurate except that the script basically gives an account of the events occurring in 1 year which is why it is probably titled a "story". However, the acting and the production details are wonderful. It brings to mind the question, if you believe the account of Jesus' birth what are you doing about it in your life?

My daughter and I both fell in love with Joseph who appears always in the background in the Bible but you truly realize now how he would have been a great man. Kind, compassionate, a selfless giver, a strong leader and protector, loyal, filled with honor and integrity and a great teacher. Wow! You see he and Mary's relationship truly blossom while he and Mary are traveling that hundred miles over that rugged terrain. How many men would make that journey and take care of a girl who was not carrying his child? It's beautiful to see how these two people trusted God and are obedient to him.

With regard to children viewing, for those of you who actually monitor what your children see, the issues of Herod's slaughter of the Innocents can be bypassed (there are two). Herod and his son are played to perfection, as well as Elizabeth and Mary's parents.

And yes, I know all about the controversy over Keisha Castle-Hughes' out of wedlock pregnancy, but you know what ... I am not to judge.

Wish there were more movies like this!

5 out of 5 stars DVD The Nativity Story.......2007-07-03

Saw this movie in the theatre, and it is the best rendition of the story of Jesus parents, and the events surrounding his birth---that I've ever seen. I bought a copy and had it sent to my God son---it is so good.

4 out of 5 stars It's Like a Documentary.......2007-06-19

I know it's entertainment but it plays like a documentary, in a good way. This movie really takes you there; about the most authentic I've seen. I even loaned it to some folks who lived in Israel and they thought the same thing. If you've never been to the Holy Land but want to experience Christ's birth first hand, watch this movie. Very well done and good acting. Done with respect to the subject and the audience.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Bible Study !!.......2007-04-28

It is great to read the bible on my computer screen while someone else is also reading the text and pronouncing all those tongue twisting words. Just good stuff. These DVDs won't disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars Very wonderful, NKJV bible on DVD. .......2007-01-25

This is a very nice thing. It aids comprehension, for me, to be able to read the text, while also hearing it. The narrator reads along at a good clip, so you can progress thru a chapter quickly. Using this Ive been thru some books Id been putting off reading for years. Nothing probably replaces diligent study of the verses using a study bible, but for a preview, or review, this is great. It is amazing how it all works so well. I might sugguest you get this one, rather than attempt to buy the NT and OT separately, as initially I ordered only the NewTest by itself, then found the OldTest not available, so I had to order this one to get the OT.

This goes over and beyond. I have two children whom are LD (Learning Disabled) and I got this DVD mainly for them to listen to, Now i can be assured that they are truly learning the word of GOD, becuase they have trouble reading any book, now they talk bible with me, so if anyone has LD children and you want them to learn the word this is a must in any christian library, I LOVE THIS and also with eight kids I can afford this

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!.......2006-05-19

The New King James Version of the Bible is my favorite version, and Stephen Johnston is the best narrator I have ever listened to. The NKJV is a modern English version of the Bible. Anyone should be able to understand it. I spent almost $200 on a set of 63 Bible CDs once. Those CDs pale in comparison to this DVD collection. This collection is on two DVDs! The Bible is not an easy read, and I am someone who falls asleep if a book does not hold my complete attention. This collection makes reading the Bible easier than ever. You don't just sit and listen to Stephen Johnston read the Bible. There are all kinds of characters in the Bible. Different actors provide their voices to portray those characters! You will listen to one actor provide the voice of Moses, and another actor will provide the voice of Mary. The Bible really comes alive because of those actors. The verses are easy to comprehend because you can read from the on-screen Bible while the narrator quotes each verse. The on-screen Bible is a lot easier for me to read than a regular Bible. There are also photos of Biblical locations. Many of the photos were taken from Israel. I can't imagine how much time and effort went into creating this DVD collection. There are over 70 hours of audio that include sound effects and dramatic music to highlight each reading from a chapter. I have never found one mistake made by the narrator or any of the people involved in this DVD collection. What is the Bible really about? Why do so many people read it? The Bible is about the God who formed the nation of Israel. It's about the creation of man, and the destruction of all life on earth that takes place at the end of time. The Jews became slaves in ancient Egypt. God told them to leave Egypt and settle in the land of Israel. Then, God presented Himself to the Jews as a Man known as Jesus Christ, or the Son of God. That is in the New Testament of the Bible. Many of the Jews did not accept Jesus Christ, and He was crucified by the Romans. Crucifixion wasn't something Jews did to their enemies. The Romans had control of Israel during that time, and they did crucify their enemies. In my opinion, Jesus was crucified by the Romans because His teachings weakened Roman authority. The Jews had a major problem with accepting Jesus Christ as God because He represented idol worship to them. What the Jews don't seem to remember is that God presented Himself to Moses as a burning bush in the book of Exodus. One can easily come to the conclusion that God can present Himself to humans as any form He chooses. God finally chose the body of Jesus Christ as His true form, and anyone that worshiped Jesus Christ was worshiping God. The Jews of today still refuse to worship Jesus Christ because of what they believe. God wanted to be Jesus Christ on earth in order to preach the gospel to that generation of people, and God knew it was necessary to sacrifice Jesus Christ for the good of all people. Anyone that continued to follow Jesus Christ after His death and resurrection was known as a Christian. The Bible reveals every aspect of human nature. Read the Bible if you want to understand human nature. Read the Bible to nourish your soul. Read the Bible to understand God and His plan to save mankind from an eternal death.

3 out of 5 stars Holy Bible: NLT OT & NT by Narrated by Stephen Johnston.......2007-01-05

This was my 1st Bible on DVD, I do not have an NLT Bible so I can't say if it is word for word. But it does go through fast & I have it, not sorry I bought it but would never buy the NIV King James Version that they show w/ this. I searched the net long & hard & finally found the NIV on DVD word for word & it is so much better. I can actually sit & follow along with my Bible, it really is word for word & no rushing through certain parts like the this one. I lost my bookmark from where I bought this when my PC went down."BUT" it from a place called, "Faith Comes By Hearing." They actually dare you to wear the DVD's out. This one is soooooo much better even though there are no words on the screen just what book your in & chapter but; IT IS WORD FOR WORD ACCORDING TO THE KING JAMES VERSION OF THE "NIV" and has other actors adding to the drama.
The ones that are offered here by Steven Johnston though I think it is wonderful he doing this for us & I used his NLT version daily until I found the one I am using now. His NIV edition it is not word for word & I do not like the hurry up effect you get in either edition. He still give us the Bible on DVD & @ a price we can afford.((I didn't find the one I found in (NIV)here))and if I hadn't found the one I have, I'd have bought Johnston's. But as I said I got lucky searching the web & found the NIV Complete Bible word for word on DVD & it wasn't easy but it's there....the only clue I can give for the one I found is: THE AUDIO BIBLE DRAMA, THE COMPLETE AUDIO BIBLE ON DVD NIV edition; From; FAITH COMES BY HEARING.....Much, Much Better, @ least I think so & I study the Bible daily.......When it comes right down to it if you listen to his or find the one I have either way listening to Bible on DVD is a wonderful break through for all who hunger for the WORD!

    3 out of 5 stars Fast reading.......2006-12-01

Indeed, Amazon delivers! At first I was afraid my DVD would never arrive. The estimated delivery date was October 5, but the Brazilian Mail only sent my package on November 28. So, if you intent to bring this item to Brazil through standard mail be prepared to wait and pay a 60% import tax (I recently bought Ilumina Premium using DHL and the delivery was much faster).
Although the narrator's voice is very pleasant, it is fast-paced. This shortcoming was already mentioned in another review and I endorse it. Since the video presentation is rather static, showing the text as an open book, I close my eyes and enjoy the audio (which is fast paced, you don't even notice the narrator's breathing). So, it was an interesting experience, the NLT is very good, and I hope future releases adress the audio speed more carefully.

1 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2006-09-29

A Bible on DVD is a great idea. You get the best of both worlds: an audio Bible read by a professional orator, PLUS on-screen text so you can easily read along.

Unfortunately, this particular DVD Bible leaves much to be desired. First, there's the translation itself: The New Living Translation is adequate; but there are much better contemporary English translations out there. Second, there are the voices: Though the main narrator does a good job; the cast of actors who read the dialogue have annoying voices that quickly get on your nerves; and they tend to "overact" their parts. Third, there's the background music and sound effects: They are distracting, and don't contribute much to one's appreciation of the text. (Plus, the same music is played over and over again; so it gets old pretty quick.) Fourth, there are lots of typos in the on-screen text; the narrator occasionally skips over or misreads words; and the on-screen text doesn't always sync up with the narration (sometimes the narrator gets ahead of the on-screen text; and sometimes the on-screen text gets ahead of the narrator). Fifth, there's the navigation: You can go to the start of a specific chapter; but not to a specific verse. And you can't rewind or fast forward -- you can only skip back or forward by chapters.

All in all, this is not a good DVD Bible. I hope I can find a better one.

        Product Description

The Da Vinci Code is a modern-day publishing phenomenon. With many millions of copies in print, it is the most popular adult novel of the 21st Century. Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown tells us that "all descriptions of documents and secret rituals ... are accurate." But are they? Many scholars and theologians have attacked the book and the "facts" on which it is based. Some claim that Brown is anti-Catholic. Book clubs, reading groups, dedicated web sites and countless reviews and articles in magazines and newspapers worldwide have fueled the fire, making The Da Vinci Code not only the most successful book of its kind ever, but also the most controversial.

Fans of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code should prepare to have their minds blown all over again watching The Da Vinci Code Decoded, a mesmerizing documentary featuring several authors whose research provided the basis for Brown's bestselling novel. Henry Lincoln (Holy Blood, Holy Grail), Dan Burstein (Secrets of the Code), and Margaret Starbird (The Woman with the Alabaster Jar) are among interviewees who can tease from Da Vinci's few paintings sometimes spooky references (e.g., the disembodied, knife-wielding hand in "The Last Supper") to the artist's heretical convictions about Christ. Much evidence is presented to support the view that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, and that the latter's flight to France with Christ's child is the real basis of the Holy Grail legend. Exciting, persuasive stuff, shrouded in mystery and possible conspiracies. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Nothing revealed, nothing decoded.......2007-05-07

This was a poor attempt at capitalizing on the success of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. The book, which is wildly successful and has sparked controversy throughout the world, and the movie, which is milder but still controversial both attract a lot of attention. This DVD simply tries to take that attention and turn it in to profit for the producers.
There is nothing profoundly interesting about this DVD. There is no new information and the DVD fails to truly point at the myths and facts from the book/movie. It merely states what the book says and why the book says it or what the book is based on without any corroboration.
Truly disappointing to a conspiracy theorist at heart. I expected more.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Information, Yet..........2007-01-21

Update as of 4/3/07 (See below for update.)

I have watched this DVD several times after borrowing from my local library. I give it three stars because I think it's worthy of at least looking at one point of view regarding the Da Vinci Code phenomenon, yet right now I have a few issues with it.

First, I personally do not agree with Dan Brown's assertion that (and I'm paraphrasing here) since the beginning of recorded time, history has ALWAYS been written by the winners. I suppose it's because I'm very cautious about writing in "absolutes" as I've often found that new information will come along to disprove what was thought to be absolute.

As well, some of the transitions between interviews left me feeling annoyed at times because it appeared that the interviewee(s) may have had more to say. This makes me wonder if the editing was done to serve the purpose of the subject of the DVD instead of presenting a more objective point-of-view.

I found it very interesting that Henry Lincoln, one of the co-author's of "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," stated that his book had absolutely had no validity at all. (I have the book, but haven't read it yet.) In any case, my initial thought was then, "Well, why write the book at all?" Perhaps being an artist is where my confusion is stemming from. What I mean is that in producing a work, to me it's valid to me, it's coming from some place inside of me that believes in what I'm doing. So, I'm a bit perplexed here and if anyone has insight in regard to this, I'm open to hearing it.

I do personally agree with Lincoln that anyone can write any sort of document, but that doesn't constitute it's validity. He also states that whatever we do know is based on heresay, guesswork and interpretation. I'm still undecided about my thoughts on that.

In any case, I'll probably watch the DVD again and update my review as I let things sink in and continue my research.

That all being said, I think the DVD is worth watching. I like to look at all sides of an issue and this is just another side to be taken into account and considered whether you agree with it or not.

        UPDATE:

I am in the middle of reading, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." Hence, I can understand a bit more where Henry Lincoln is coming from when he states his book, etc. has no validity at all. I do wonder if the statement is his way of getting off the hook at having written a book which, when you see, "The Real DaVinci Code" DVD proposes (and with a good deal of sense, although I don't like the interviewer's sarcasm) that the whole basis of the book is based on a hoax. Ultimately, whether or not the "facts" were a hoax...I have absolutely no idea. But I do tend to lean more on the side of the DVD "The Real DaVinci Code" after seeing it many times. That being said, I'd look into all the info and determine for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air.......2006-06-21

This dvd does not claim to contain a debate about the origins of Christianity; it discusses an alternate viewpoint (as Dan Brown reminds us "the winners write the history books")This dvd is a nice antidote to all the oppressive ideas we have been raised with; esp. the idea of God as male, and the idea of women being unworthy of church leadership. This dvd includes interviews with Dan Burstein, Henry Lincoln, Martin Lunn, Lynn Picknett, Clive Prince, Dr. Karen Ralls, Dr. James Robinson, and Margaret Starbird. I particularly liked Margaret Starbird's interviews - she describes how when she first read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", she found it blasphemous because she had been raised a loyal Catholic. But afterward, she had religious experiences regarding the content of that book which lead her to research Mary Magdalene and write "The Woman with the Alabaster Jar". She comes across as very rational, sensible and even heroic. It takes courage to contradict the dearly held beliefs of the majority. I thought Dan Burstein also made some very good points with his discussions about the lives and customs of Jewish people during the time Jesus lived. I think this dvd is an important reminder that just because you have been taught something all your life - that doesn't mean it is necessarily the truth. To be truly alive is to continue to search for the truth as long as you live.

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive cover box: this is a pro-Dan Brown DVD, not an opposing view.......2006-05-28

Like most people, before I spend money on a DVD, I read all the cover descriptions first.

The back cover starts with a breathless announcement about Dan Brown's book. Then it lists a series of questions by the book's detractors.

Based on the cover description, I honestly thought this DVD was going to be a reasoned "second opinion" regarding the historical information that Dan Brown uses as part of his novel.

I had no idea that the DVD was actually just a rehash of the same theories minus the mystery-thriller context. I'm guessing the marketers deliberately meant to ensnare people of faith into thinking they were purchasing an opposing view.

This DVD should be called: "The Da Vinci Code," Part Deux.

1 out of 5 stars See 'Breaking Da Vinci's Code' for the actual facts.......2006-05-07

'Da Vinci Code Decoded' is merely an uncritical rehash of the same, supposed, 'facts' that Dan Brown attempts to put forth in his book, much of which was co-opted from 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' (as Mr. Brown himself attributes in his book). The many fabrications and outright frauds he puts forth are effectively debunked in the far superior video 'Breaking Da Vinci's Code' where actual, reputable scholars dubunk his numerous errors.

The pseudopigraphical writings known as the Gnostic (so-called) Gospels have been known to history since the 2nd Century and did not come to light for the first time at Nag Hammadi, although this cache of writings from that Egyptian city did increase our understanding of Gnosticism. But the fact remains that these writings come from the 2nd century while the New Testament writings are demonstrably from the 1st century and carry the weight of Apostolic Authority, something the Gnostic writings never had. By far the majority of mainstream historical and theological scholarship still rests on the side of the New Testament as the legitimate historical writings of the Christian Church, despite the efforts of a minority of Gnostic advocates, like Elaine Pagels.

It should also be clearly understood that the claims put forth in 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' and 'The Da Vinci Code' are entirely rejected by mainstream scholarship, both liberal and conservative. This is primarily because both books suffer from the same fatal flaw, that is the so-called 'Priory of Sion' and the 'Dossier Secret' claims advanced by these authors are known and establshed FRAUDS. These are the fabrications of a circle of anti-semitic French nationalists (and certifiable nut-cases) who revolve around the figure of Pierre Plantard - who was a primary source in 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' (as readers of that book should be aware). This is established by the excellent video 'Breaking Da Vinci's Code' as well as CBS's 60 Minutes, which did an investigative report into Mr. Brown's 'facts' and came to the same conclusions as above (this was aired most recently on April 30th). Many other researchers have done reviews of the 'facts' of HBHG and DVC and come to the same conclusions.

As a former Bible Seminary student and historical researcher, I can attest from my own research on these matters that the Da Vinci code is entirely a work of fiction and shouldn't be understood in any other light. As far as 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' is concerned, even it's own authors admit to it's highly speculative nature, not the type of writing one is going to draw serious historical or theological conclusions from.

The bottom line, don't be taken in by the light-weight, air-thin 'research' as presented in 'Da Vinci Decoded' or the two books that inspired this current mania into the long debunked Gnostic writings. By far the great weight of history and scholarship rest on the New Testament as the legitimate and authentic history of Christianity.
