Showered with Oscars, this wonderfully bitchy (and witty) comedy written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz concerns an aging theater star (Bette Davis) whose life is being supplanted by a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing ingenue (Anne Baxter) whom she helped. This is a film for a viewer to take in like a box of chocolates, packed with scene-for-scene delights that make the entire story even better than it really is. The film also gives deviously talented actors such as George Sanders and Thelma Ritter a chance to speak dazzling lines; Davis bites into her role and never lets go. A classic from Mankiewicz, a legendary screenwriter and the brilliant director of A Letter to Three Wives, The Barefoot Contessa, and Sleuth. --Tom Keogh
Description
From the moment she glimpses her idol at the stage door, Eve Harrington (ANN BAXTER) is determined to take the reins of power away from the great actress Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS). Eve maneuvers her way into Margo's Broadway role, becomes a sensation and even causes turmoil in the lives of Margo's director boyfriend (GARY MERRILL), her playwright (HUGH MARLOWE) and his wife (CELESTE HOLM). Only the cynical drama critic (Oscar winner GEORGE SANDERS) sees through Eve, admiring her audacity and perfect pattern of deceit. THELMA RITTER and MARILYN MONROE co-star in this acclaimed classic, which won six Academy Awards and received the most nominations (14) in film history.

A Lesson In Acting. Great Peformances & Crackling Script Make This A Classic........2007-07-01
Joseph L. Mankewicz (who would go on to direct the infamous 1963 epic
"Cleopatra" and the 1972 mystery "Sleuth," starring the greatest stage & screen actor ever to inhabit the Earth, Sir Laurence Olivier) writes and directs this witty film about Hollywood (the other film which worked like this was the 1952 classic "Singin' In The Rain"). Watch for a young Marilyn Monroe in one of her first films (sadly, she would die 10 years later). Bette Davis, Celeste Holm (Best Supporting Actress for the classic
"Gentleman's Agreement"), Anne Baxter, Guy Merrill and George Sanders (who would win Best Supporting Actor) star in this classic film. A MUST for anyone interested in the art of acting. Not Rated.
Great PMS Movie!.......2007-06-27
This is a great movie for anyone who has been deceived by a so called friend.
It is also great for anyone who feels as though their looks are fading because of age.
This movie makes you feel great! especially when there is triumph and satisfaction at the end.
All About Eve.......2007-06-25
Sharp, caustic take on the theatre world, and the wide assortment of parasites, barracudas, and hangers-on that populate it. Eve is the wolf in sheep's clothing, a comer with just enough talent and cunning to penetrate Margo's inner circle and catch her when she's vulnerable and feeling her age. Davis gives the best performance of her long career, and young Baxter is outstanding. George Sanders also impresses as jaded critic Addison De Witt, the only soul wise enough to see what Eve is up to. On his arm in one key scene is Marilyn Monroe, in a minor bit as a vacuous but decorative chorus girl. A must-see.
BETTE DAVIES IS THE BOMB.......2007-06-23
FOR ALL BETTE DAVIS COLLECTORS OF HER FILM WORKS, THIS IS A MUST!! HER GENIUS AND TALENT AS AN AMERICAN ACTRESS HAS NEVER BEEN EQUALED!
Simply Classic.......2007-06-12
All About Eve is a sinister tale of "Men and Thier Women". Eve Harrington is a simpleton town girl who comes to the big city looking for resolution to her previous hard lived life. and Eve found Margo Channing, the biggest stage actress of the country. Margo decided to take eve on as planning secratery. Margo despiter her exceeding talents of stage acting is becoming more and more insecure at her age of 42, and Eve shadowing her did not exactly help. As the movie progresses Margo has classic outbursts such as "buckle your seatbelts, its going to be a bumpy night." so the audience asks themselves, is Margo Channing paranoid? or is the world All About Eve who is trying to upstage Margo any time she gets? I love this film, and it is cleverly written. Five stars all the way!

Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Some Like it Hot.......2007-06-26
Long before "Tootsie" and "Mrs. Doubtfire", Wilder gave us this comic, gender-bending masterpiece, which came at the very end of the conservative `50s, providing a preview of the more liberated decade to come. Here the director is in pure comedy mode, and pulls off a tricky premise brilliantly. Lemmon and Curtis make an ideal comic duo, Monroe sparkles as the object of their sisterly affections, and Joe E. Brown nearly steals the picture as a dotty millionaire besotted with Lemmon's Daphne. A howl, truly.
Hilarious Classic!.......2007-05-09
Of of the funniest movies of all times. Billy Wilder is a genius, and even though this was made in the 50's, it is not outdated at all and truly a fun film!
Quintessential fun.......2007-04-23
Boy! With present Hollywood standards in comedy going down and down, Billy Wilder black and white movie mixing gangsters, crossdressing, gender clichés, music and intelligence... giving us a melting pot that comes out as a real gem.
Marilyn Monroe has never been one of my favorites, but the dance scene and final dialogue between Jack Lemmon and Joe E.Brown worth the price of a lifetime in movie theaters.
A must!
We Wouldn't be Caught DEAD in Chicago!.......2007-04-23
"Suppose the stock market crashes. Suppose Mary Pickford divorces Douglas Fairbanks. Suppose the Dodgers leave Brooklyn!"
Suppose another improbable premise: Two down on their luck musicians inadvertently witness Chicagoland's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre and to get outa town they don wigs, flapper dresses and cloche hats and join an all-girl band, bound for Florida on the Sunshine Limited. What a hoot!
Even if you don't know all of the historical references, this is a film that works flawlessly from start to finish with gags that are fresh and fun no matter how familiar they become. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon are unconvincingly improbable dolled up as dames, but they manage to hoodwink bandleader Sweet Sue (Joan Shawlee), songbird Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) and the rest of the cast, to the point that Jack snags a "rich millionaire" (Joe E. Brown who hams it uproariously as "Osgood Fielding III") with enough moxie to tango till dawn! What fun!
Billy Wilder must have loved the `twenties, the songs and the clothes, and who doesn't love the Del Coronado Hotel even when it doubles for the Seminole Ritz? "Spats Colombo" (George Raft) has a wonderful insider Hollywood gag bit harking back to his own smaller "Guino Rinaldo" supporting role in "Scarface"--could it be the very same quarter being flipped? ("Where did you pick up that cheap trick?").
The songs are fabulous, especially when Marilyn is "Runnin' Wild", does her o so scantily clad version of Boop-a-Doop gal Helen Kane and warms up Tony to "I'll Build a Stairway to the Stars". And "Underneath the Sheltering Palms" is the perfect resort-arrival song--Disney should try it at their pseudo-Del AKA Grand Floridian.
Remember: "It's not how long it takes, it's who's taking you." And the film's perfect ending line is surely one of the five greatest in all Hollywood history. (The others? "Casablanca", "The Wizard of Oz", "Sunset Boulevard" and "Now, Voyager"). Maybe nobody's perfect, but this comedy sure is!
Hot Collection........2007-03-27

Nunnally Johnson's Broadway comedy was brought to the big screen by director Jean Negulesco, built around a trio of female stars, Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Grable. They play friends who come up with a plan to find and marry rich men. They rent a lavish penthouse and use it as their launching pad to lure men with money in the bank. But each eventually finds that love is more important that material possessions, though it takes a while. One running joke has Monroe so insecure about her looks that she refuses to wear glasses, though this means she bumps into furniture and walls. The other has Bacall rejecting suitor Cameron Mitchell because he doesn't wear a tie, assuming this means he's low-class when, in fact, he's the Donald Trump of 1954. Pre-feminist comedy captures the mindset of an era in which women's identities were based on the men they married. It has its moments, but much of the humor seems dated, though its take on sexual politics is occasionally acute. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:
The Ladies of Sutton Place.......2007-06-25
The title of the movie says it all; it is not exactly the movie a modern day feminist would like to see; then again it stars some of greatest women of Hollywood. The main attraction of the movie are; Schatze Page (Lauren Bacall), Pola Debevoise (Marilyn Monroe), and Loco Dempsey (Betty Grable). This romantic comedy is set in Manhattan about three women who team up with an elaborate scheme to lure wealthy men with an intention to marry them. They rent a penthouse, sell the furniture that doesn't belong to them, and use the funds to support themselves. Schatze is the team leader who is smart and all brains; other two are ditsy blondes. Schatze has her eyes set on an elderly, charming and wealthy widower J.D. Hanley (William Powell), at the same time ignores the advances of a young man by the name of Tom Brookman (Cameron Mitchell) whom she thinks is a poor "gas pump jockey." The three ladies meet men of their dreams; the gold digger's plans go awry when the two blondes fall in love with men who are poor, and they desperately try to stop each other from marrying the wrong men. At the end the two blondes end up marrying these men in the name of love. Schatze hits the jackpot; when Hanley offers to marry her; she has a change of heart, and she finds that she will be marrying Tom who is not poor as she always suspected, but a millionaire. Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Grable deliver the best performances of their careers as "desperate women," but Lauren Bacall is a clincher, and most impressive in the number one spot. This movie was directed by Jean Negulesco, who also directed movies such as, Johnny Belinda (1948), Best of Everything (1959), Titanic (1953), and The Rains of Ranchipur (1955). This movie was produced and written by Nunnally Johnson who wrote successful movies such as, The Dirty Dozen (1967), Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962), and Jesse James (1939).

How could the go wrong...well it is dated...LOL...but still...MM does her best acting and the subtle little digs at other movies of theirs and a certain "tough guy" along with three of Hollywoods best and most beautiful actresses in one funny and predictable movie...one everyone should add to their collection.

Anita Loos's old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands gets a makeover in Howard Hawks's 1953 musical, starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The film may largely be a fluff project best remembered as a showcase for its leading actresses, but then Monroe and Russell rarely got such extended opportunities to prove that they were more than cinematic icons. --Tom Keogh

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.......2007-05-07
First class service . Wonderful movie brings back lots of memories of happy times.
Brash, sassy and fun!.......2007-02-07
A kiss on the hand
May be quite continental,
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.
A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat.
Men grow cold
As girls grow old,
And we all lose our charms in the end.
But square-cut or pear-shaped,
These rocks don't loose their shape.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend.
Tiffany's!
Cartier!
Black Starr!
Frost Gorham!
Talk to me Harry Winston.
Tell me all about it!
There may come a time
When a lass needs a lawyer,
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.
There may come a time
When a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you're awful nice,
But get that ice or else no dice.
He's your guy
When stocks are high,
But beware when they start to descend.
It's then that those louses
Go back to their spouses.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes gave Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell the perfect opportunity to showcase their numerous talents. They sing beautiful numbers including "(We're Just) Two Little Girls From Little Rock;" "Bye Bye Baby;" "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love" and "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend." When Marilyn and Jane dance to some of these numbers their beauty and talent strike the viewer as incredible. Tommy Noonan turns in a strong and convincing performance as Gus Esmond, the American man who wants to marry Lorelei, who is played by Marilyn Monroe. Charles Coburn and Norma Varden perform as Sir Francis 'Piggy' Beekman and Lady Beekman, super rich people who got their wealth from diamond mining in South Africa. The crisp, clear color reflects the hard work to restore this movie and the sound is excellent, too! Jule Styne and Leo Robin provide wonderful music and lyrics for the classic songs in this picture.
The film starts as Lorelei and her girlfriend Dorothy Shaw embark on a ship for France. Although Dorothy plans to chaperone Lorelei, Lorelei has different plans and soon Dorothy's quest for a man distracts her from overseeing Lorelei anyway. The ship carries a male Olympic relay team and they certainly attract Dorothy's attention. A cast of characters are also on board, the most notable of which are Sir Beekman, who longs for an affair with a younger woman. His wife, Lady Beekman, travels with him. These characters all together on the same ship prove to be the ultimate formula for high jinks on both the high seas and overseas! Lorelei and Dorothy proceed to sink their claws into rich men for their money. However, unbeknownst to Lorelei, her fiancé's father, Mr. Esmond, Sr., employs a detective onboard. The detective, Ernie Malone, must follow Lorelei and find evidence that she will be unfaithful to her fiancé Gus Esmond. Mr. Esmond, Sr. can then destroy all plans for the wedding of Lorelei and Gus. Gus's father believes that such a marriage would be unsuitable for his son.
The scenes in Paris offer stunning backdrops and a wonderful idea of what Paris looked like in the early 1950s. After a few ups and downs Lorelei and Dorothy unexpectedly appear to be in a lot of financial trouble and they get jobs in a show to make money. Lorelei performs the unforgettable song and dance number "Diamond's Are A Girl's Best Friend" with male back up dancers. However, things become even more complicated when Lorelei stands accused of stealing a tiara that belonged to Lady Beekman. Actually, Sir Beekman gave the tiara to Lorelei in a weak moment because he found her to be beautiful--too bad he never told Lady Beekman! Lorelei and Dorothy sing the beautiful number "When Love Goes Wrong (Nothing Goes Right)." The cops begin to nip at their heels and Lorelei--or someone quite like her--appears in court because Lady Beekman wants her tiara returned to her. The ensuing court scene boasts a comedic, campy quality to it. Awesome!
Do things work themselves out at the end of this picture? Well, folks, there are no spoilers here--watch this movie and see for yourselves!
Marilyn Monroe fans will thrill to this great picture and Jane Russell fans will enjoy it just as much. People who enjoy musical comedies will also like this picture.
The film crowned Monroe in her position as the nation's new 'Love Goddess.'.......2006-12-31
Jane Russell's lack of ego and Monroe's sense of fun meshed perfectly when they co-starred in Anita Loos' light-hearted satire of the old adage that when a woman goes bad, men go right after her...
Monroe was a wonder in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." She comes into the film looking like a winner, and leaves as one... The picture has been set by the tone of her personality, set just so fully, let us say, as Ingmar Bergman leaves his mood on every scene...
Her personality infuses every corner of the film as if she has even picked the scenery to work for her... So the movie rises above its pretext, its story, its existence as a musical, even its music, and becomes at its best a magic work, yet it is a comic bubble without weight or solemnity, another piece of spun sugar come up out of everything banal in entertainment...
But Marilyn remains a great comedian, a sexual delight, especially when she sang "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." The film crowned Monroe in her position as the nation's new 'Love Goddess' with the promise of many sparkling hits to come, and Jane Russell's career continued, with less fanfare, but very successfully for several more years...
"Talk to me Harry Winston, tell me all about it".......2006-09-10
I must confess I had forgotten just how good this movie actually is. The plot involves the adventures of one gold digger (Monroe) and one man hungry vamp (Russell). While I must confess that for Monroe this probably was her starmaking role, Russell really shines in the role of Dorothy, who inevitably must play Ethel to Marilyn Monroe's Lucy.
The tone is set for this movie by the opening number which involves Russell and Monroe singing about "The Man from Little Rock." I am not sure how much effort was put into shooting this particular number, but Russell and Monroe are so striking that even the dead probably would take notice and burst into applause.
This movie is famous for the "Diamonds are a girl's best Friend" number that Monroe did and Madonna copied in her "Material Girl" video. However, for my money, Russell certainly shows her considerable star quality when she parodies this number in the subsequent court room scene. No wonder Russell impressed Howard Hughes in her heyday. Hopefully she will be the subject of one of the box set tribute collections.
In short, this movie is a pure delight and well worth repeated watchings. It is worth the price of admission to see two great stars at the height of their powers.
Pure Marilyn, pure light-hearted fun........2005-12-28
Arguably, along with the 'Seven Year Itch', this lighthearted 50's musical comedy is the most definitive 'Marilyn' film. In particular for her memorable 'Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend' number, so adorable in its (and her)innocent mocking self parody and brought to life again several decades later in Madonna's, 80's' Material Girl' Video.
This pairing of 'Monroe' and 'Russell' as two voluptuous show girls from 'Little Rock'" in search of fun and a man or two on their way to Paris aboard a cruise ship, is pure Hollywood sugar coated entertainment and escapism.
Marilyne is just so funny and cute as the wide eyed, but gold digging, 'Lorelei', the supposed 'Dumb Blonde' who knows what she wants however, and why. In suitable contrast Jane Russell plays 'Dorothy' the more serious, switched on and streetwise Brunette. Who on the other hand, lets her heart(rather than her bank acccount)rule her head when it comes to men and plays a kind of big sister role to her more naive, but materialistic focused compatriot.
Though it may be said that for the most part 'Russell' is somewhat eclipsed by the 'platinum' ultra luminous presence of the 'eternal woman-child' Ms Monroe. She undoubtedly brings a lot of energy to the role, and the camaraderie and chemistry they deliver as a pair contribute much to the films charm and success.
There are several very entertaining 'showgirl' type musical numbers throughout. But I confess I enjoy Marilyn's ditzy remarks, balanced by a her cunningly disguised 'knowingness' the most. Sooo cute when she refers to the ship's portals as 'round windows' and innocently tries on a diamond tiara around her neck. Then, at the end justifies and explains her money driven ways to her finance's contemtuous Father,in the most surprisingly clever way. Pure 'Marilyn' in all her pure, unique celluloid magic!

A married man, left alone during a hot summer, fantasizes madly about the impossibly gorgeous woman living in the upstairs apartment. When the woman is Marilyn Monroe, such fantasies are the stuff of epics, and The Seven Year Itch is a memorable laugh machine. Tom Ewell, repeating his role from George Axelrod's Broadway hit, plays the itchy protagonist, whose vivid imagination gets the better of him. When Monroe finally comes downstairs and becomes friends (confiding, among other things, that she keeps her undies in the icebox in this hot weather), imagination meets reality in a merciless attack on the male libido. Ewell's crack timing is matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopedia of great movie images. Director Billy Wilder adapted the play with Axelrod; if the film is not one of Wilder's signature works (Some Like It Hot and The Apartment would soon follow), it is nevertheless a smoothly crafted comedy. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
The "backstory" is the wrongstory.......2006-12-11
The movie commentary on the disc couldn't be more off-base. Comments by
self congratulatory "film critics" (Thanks Hugh Hefner) on the repressive
nature of the film board of the times belies the fact that this is a great
movie and the fact that despite the death of censership, a better movie of this
type (or a remake) has never been made. It's the restraint that gives the
movie its intensity and romantic appeal. Making a commentary on this movie
that simply critisizes censership does not do this movie justice.
Mmmmmm Marilyn!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
movie is kind of boring and tedious. only the sight of MM makes it exciting. but get it to see the legend at her sexiest, cutest, most edible, luscious best!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is very beautiful in it. she should have really tried to stay looking this way. wow, what a persona/personality!!!!!!!! each word she says, move she makes is fascinating. she operates like no other woman, and no other woman operates like her!! lol. she is my idol!!
Not Wilder's (or Monroe's) Best.......2006-11-09
"The Seven Year Itch" is a movie directed by legendary director Billy Wilder, that is probably the 2nd most famous Marilyn Monroe film behind "Some Like It Hot" (also directed by Wilder). The Seven Year Itch has been cited as one of Monroe's most enjoyable films and I enjoyed it to a certain extent, although it's far from a perfect film. The movie is about a man named Richard, who's wife and son go on vacation for the summer leaving Richard home all alone. Since it seems common practice for people to do this, Richard watches as his friends take advantage of the absence of their wives and drink and smoke, etcetera. Richard, himself, is a little bit neurotic and very paranoid so he tries his best to avoid doing things like that. That is until, fate steps in; It steps in, in the form of a tomato plant that smashes his lawn chair. It falls from the new tenant's window and the new tenant takes Richard aback. It's a beautiful woman, whom he learns is named The Girl (Monroe, who looks stunning). After some flirtation, he invites her down for a drink only to be consumed by the fear of the fact that he could be seen by his wife or someone else. When The Girl comes down, they drink and mess around; But Richard can't escape that nagging fear. When he goes to work, he learns of something called The Seven Year Itch. This is something that a man who has been married for seven years (Richard has) experiences for women around him. That's almost the entire movie summed up. Out of the other Wilder films I've seen (Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, and Sunset Boulevard) this is without a doubt, my least favorite. The charm of certain actors, notably Monroe, can only carry a film so far. I found this movie charming, don't get me wrong, and it also had some humor and it was entertaining for the most part. But some scenes I found dull and wishing that they would end. This movie does, technically, feature one of the most famous scenes in movie history. This is, of course, the scene where Monroe's skirt is lifted up and she nervously pushes it back down. This scene, at least in this film, doesn't exist. Wind from a subway is blown up her dress, but we don't see it flying up or pushing it down. We see her kneecaps and the dress going up and then being pressed back down. Maybe it was just my copy (mine's an older one), but I didn't see it. Anyway, bottom line; Enjoyable movie, but no masterpiece.
GRADE: B-
The untiring blaze of seduction!.......2006-10-14
Wilder played hard with this delicious comedy, around a simple man who literally will become the most desired male sex symbol.
This movie is not only the most Fellinian of Wilder' s career; in its challenging proposal anticipated in twenty years to Woody Allen; its mordacious dialogues and suggestive homage to "From here to the eternity" focuses with delirious humor the collective unconscious around the eternal sex symbol per excellence; the mighty Aphrodite Marilyn Monroe in the most reminded and erotic scene of the movie, that would influence the well reminded remake "The woman in red."
Tantalizing, mesmerizing, funny, cynical and enjoyable film that enhances with the years as the good wine.
very bad and pretentious movie.......2006-09-19
the screenplay was so bad that almost drove me crazy. like watching a badly directed drama on the stage, that guy kept talking to himself, tried to convey those no-big-deal thoughts. those monologues should never put into a movie but on a theatre's stage. monroe was specially pretentious under the guidance of billy wilder who, at that time was very good, but now all of his works are so difficult to be absorbed as good movies. almost every scene looked like a scene grabbed from a broadway show, so pretentious and so shallow. if this was a musical i might be able to stand it better.

Sunrise (1927)
There are those who rate Sunrise the greatest of all silent films. Then again, some consider it the finest film from any era. Such claims invite a backlash, but do yourself a favor and give it a look. At the very least, you'll know you've seen a movie of extraordinary visual beauty and emotional purity. This universal tale of a farm couple's journey from country to city and back again was the first American film for F.W. Murnau, the German director of Nosferatu and The Last Laugh whose everyday scenes seemed haunted by phantoms and whose most extravagant visions never lost touch with reality. Hollywood afforded him the technical resources to unleash his imagination, and in turn he opened up the power of camera movement and composition for a generation of American filmmakers. You'll never forget the walk in the swamp, the ripples on the lake, the trolley ride from forest to metropolis. This movie defines the cinema. --Richard T. Jameson
How Green Was My Valley (1941)
John Ford's beautiful, heartfelt drama about a close-knit family of Welsh coal miners is one of the greatest films of Hollywood's golden age--a gentle masterpiece that beat Citizen Kane in the Best Picture race for the 1941 Academy Awards. The picture also won Oscars for Best Director (Ford), Best Supporting Actor (Donald Crisp), Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography; all of those awards were richly deserved, even if they came at the expense of Kane and Orson Welles. Based on the novel by Richard Llewellyn, the film focuses its eventful story on 10-year-old Huw (Roddy McDowall), youngest of seven children to Mr. and Mrs. Morgan (Donald Crisp, Sarah Allgood), a hardy couple who've seen the best and worst of times in their South Wales mining town. They're facing one of the worst times as Mr. Morgan refuses to join a miners union whose members have begun a long-term strike. Family tensions grow and Huw must learn many of life's harsher lessons under the tutelage of the local preacher (Walter Pidgeon), who has fallen in love with Huw's sister (Maureen O'Hara). As various crises are confronted and devastating losses endured, How Green Was My Valley unfolds as a rich, moving portrait of family strength and integrity. It's also a nod to a simpler, more innocent time--and to the preciousness of memory and the inevitable passage from youth to adulthood. An all-time classic, not to be missed. --Jeff Shannon
Gentleman's Agreement (1947)
Elia Kazan directed this sometimes powerful study of anti-Semitism in nicer circles, based on Laura Z. Hobson's post-World War II novel. Gregory Peck is a hotshot magazine writer who has been blind to the problem; to ferret it out, he passes himself off as Jewish and watches the WASPs squirm. Seen a half-century later, the attitudes seem quaint and dated: Could it really have been like this? Yet the truth of the story comes through, in the wounded dignity of John Garfield, the upright indignation of Peck, and the hidden ways bigotry and hatred can poison relationships. That's particularly true in the Oscar-winning performance of Celeste Holm, who finds more layers than you'd expect in what seems like a stock character. --Marshall Fine
All About Eve (1950)
--Tom Keogh

Great movies.......2007-05-11
I was looking for All About Eve, but I ended up three othet great movies. What a wonderful bonus
Collection does not overlap the other Best Picture collections.......2007-02-03
These are four of the eight Best Picture winners produced by Fox Film Corporation, the others being "Cavalcade", "Sound of Music", "Patton", and "The French Connection". I'll give a brief run down on my opinion of each film:
Sunrise (1927) - Winner of "Best Artistic Picture" of 1927-8, this is actually NOT a best picture winner in the strict sense. That film would be "Wings". However, this is a much better movie. The whole picture is a work of art. Director F.W. Murnau actually makes you somewhat sorry that silent pictures are obsolete, and the cinematography has to be seen to be believed. The story is simple - A farmer falls for a woman from the city, almost resorts to killing his wife to be rid of her, comes to his senses, and the man and wife remember why they got married in the first place while having a day of fun in the City. If you don't like artistic pictures, you may not like this one, but it is one of my favorites.
How Green Was My Valley (1941) - The most amazing factoid about this film is that it beat Citizen Kane for Best Picture, and yet today it is relatively forgotten compared to that film. The film is pretty good though. It is about a Welsh family and the impact of how their green lush Welsh valley is ruined by mining at the turn of the twentieth century. John Ford directs.
Gentleman's Agreement (1947) - One of the first "socially relevant" films to win Best Picture. Gregory Peck pretends to be Jewish to collect material for a story on being Jewish in America. The message is powerful, but there are some distracting subplots going on - most notably Peck and his relationship with his sick mother, and Peck's romance with Dorothy McGuire that rings hollow.
All About Eve (1950) - This is a great one. Powerful acting by everyone. Just when you think there is nobody more evil than Anne Baxter's Eve Harrington, along comes George Sander's Addison DeWitt and kicks her to the curb in that category. Then there's the wonderful Bette Davis as aging star Margo Channing. This role reinvigorated Davis' career, which had been on a downward slide for a few years.
In summary you get two great Best Pictures - Sunrise and All About Eve, and two good Best Pictures - How Green was My Valley and Gentleman's Agreement, all for a reasonable price that does not overlap with other Best Picture boxed sets and DVD bundles. I recommend it.
Hollywood masterpieces.......2007-01-16
I have been trying for over a year to obtain a copy of Sunrise. I had seen the film about two years ago on the Turner Classical Movies channel and it had a profound impact on me. The characters were so human and modern in their behavior. And, although certain directors of the 20's seemed to like advancing the plot or time element through superimposing one frame over another and it could be annoying and confusing, in this film it was a fascinating technique to watch. This is a film in which you can get totally engrossed. The story is timeless and poignant. I am so glad this film was included with the "talkie" best picture films (which, it goes without saying are among the superior films of the 30's and 40's).
Very good value -- even if you own a couple already!.......2005-07-01
I have to take issue with "Moviefanatic", who objected to having no lower-cost, 'Sunrise'-only alternative to this set.
I could see his point if they were charging a premium price for the set, but they're not. The cost of this 4-film set is less, for example, than for the 1-disk Criterion edition of 'The Passion of Joan of Arc', or the Kino or Image Entertainment versions of 'Intolerance'. (To say nothing of other silent masterpieces, like 'The Crowd', which have never received DVD release.)
If it helps, you can think of the other three films as bonus filler items. They are all worthy pictures. 'How Green Was My Valley' is often called sentimental, and in some ways it is, but it is a dark, sad movie, and one of Ford's best. 'Gentleman's Agreement' is the weakest film here, a sincere and well-intentioned attack on American anti-Semitism, but rather talky and slow. If it doesn't represent Kazan's best work, it still stands up as historically important. 'All About Eve' was for years the film with the most Oscar nominations (14); it too is talky, but with dialogue this memorable, talky is in this case a good thing.
But the big attraction of this set is 'Sunrise'. Technically, you could argue 'Sunrise' is out of place here, as is not exactly a "Best Picture" Oscar-winner. In the first year of the Academy Awards, 1927-28, the award for "Best Production" was split between 'Wings' and 'The Last Command', while 'Sunrise' got the award -- issued that year only -- for "Best Artistic Quality of Production", beating out 'The Crowd' and 'Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness'. (Incidentally, none of those three films were nominated for "Best Production", and 'The Crowd' would have taken the Artistic Quality award if not for an all-night fillibuster by L.B. Mayer.) But this is trivia; both 'Sunrise' and 'The Crowd' are legitimate masterpieces.
I had never heard of 'Chang', but it is available on DVD, from Image Entertainment -- for about the same price as this 4-disk set.
Bottom line: This set features three great movies, one of which is otherwise unavailable, and one good one. The set is a terrific bargain. Case closed; buy it.
Clever Packaging!.......2005-06-06
I have to admit that all of these movies are great. Unfortunately, all of them (except 'Sunrise') have been available in other editions. So what do the lovers of Murnau's masterpiece have to do? In order to get their hands on the cherished bonus, they have to buy three other movies that they have probably watched countless number of times. I have to give credit to this DVD set creators/promoters. This is business sense (shameless and greedy) at its best! And people flock to buy it and give praises. Everybody is happy (or furious)... You decide.

Though it seems dated now, this film adaptation of William Inge's romantic comedy-drama was considered pretty hot stuff in its day, which was 1956. Directed by Joshua Logan from George Axelrod's script of Inge's Broadway hit, the film stars Marilyn Monroe as the kind of woman who can't understand why she always brings out the worst in men. A singer who has attracted the attention of a young rodeo rider (Don Murray) whom she meets on a bus, she finds herself trapped at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. The young cowboy, whose intentions are honorable, can't control his temper and can't understand why this experienced woman won't take him seriously--and why she rejects him when he begins acting jealous and possessive. Love takes its lumps but comes out slugging in the end, with Marilyn at her vulnerable, jaded best. --Marshall Fine
Description
A young and innocent cowboy discovers the girl of his dreams (Marilyn Monroe) and decides to make her his wife. She is more than reluctant to accept his proposal and he forces her to board a bus headed for Montana. The road is blocked and the journey is interrupted by an overnight stay at Grace's Diner, where her plight is soon revealed to all. Realizing his brute approach will never win her heart, he apologizes and kisses her goodbye, only to discover she really has grown to love him. Acclaimed by many as Marilyn Monroe's first serious acting performance. BUS STOP displays a mixture of humor and pain.
Customer Reviews:
Will the Real Marilyn Please Stand Up?.......2007-05-26
Everytime I watch a Marilyn Monroe movie I think "maybe this one will be different," but time and time again she is cast in the same role of the befuddled blonde that the studios molded for her. A time or two, such as in How to Marry a Millionaire, Marilyn seemed to strike gold with her penchant for humor, but those moments are rare, and you won't find them in this film.
Cherie spends the entire movie fretting over her lot in life with a high-pitched whine, and her cowboy lover hollars and brawls until you want to knock them both over the head.
The supporting cast isn't too exciting either, and costume design is stingy. Marilyn goes back and forth between a fishnet horror and a leather skirt throughout the entire movie.
The only parts of the movie I really enjoyed were the rodeo footage and the scene where Beau finally gets the tar beat out of him by a fellow traveler.
Oddly entertaining and touching.......2007-05-03
Bus Stop was an oddly entertaining and touching film. At first glance, the picture appears relatively dumb and unrealistic, and too be honest, the acting was a bit canned (even for Marilyn), but upon closer examination, all of those elements end up having a touch of genius. You begin to realize that the acting was supposed to be that way (Marilyn's bad singing and overly dramatic acting and Don Murray's over the top exuberance), and that they are done very well. Don't forget that this is really a stage production. What strikes me most is the love story that develops in the end and it is very touching, given the metamorphosis that the cowboy goes through during the picture. Also, Marilyn's willingness to downgrade her looks (from Blonde bombshell to a hillbilly lounge-singer) and deliberately sing poorly in the only song of the film, was very brave and ended up working very well. All in all, this is a cute love story to watch with your wife or girlfriend and will leave you with a good feeling in the end.
To contrast this film with the quintessential Marilyn, watch the Seven Year Itch or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the latter being her best movie of all time (despite what most people think of Some Like it Hot).
Monroe at her Best.......2007-04-11
Enjoyable film with Monroe at her acting best. I prefer her in more glamorous roles, but appreciate her venture into other areas.
strictly for fans of that buxom blonde.......2007-03-30
william inge is not served well in this adaptation of his stage hit which comes off today as more a situation comedy than a serious work. don murray is just plain silly as the callow cowboy, but of course the only reason anybody would watch this movie nowadays is the presence of marilyn monroe, who shines in what is essentially a supporting role. not bad, just not very good.

THIS WAS A GIFT PURCHASE FOR MY DAUGHTER AND SHE ABSOLUTLEY LOVED IT.

In the salad days of nuclear-weapons testing, the United States detonated 331 atomic, hydrogen, and thermonuclear bombs. Many of those explosions appear in Trinity and Beyond, which utilizes a lot of declassified footage, most of it in color. Standouts include the United States' South Pacific detonation of an atom bomb 90 feet below the water to study the effects on a fleet of ships. Surprise, surprise, they sink! If that wasn't enough, the navy also loaded the decks with sheep to study the effects of the blast on life forms. Surprise, surprise, they die! Glowing leg of lamb anyone? This film will alternately amuse and horrify you at the rampant irresponsibility of the Soviets and Americans in their quest for nuclear domination. The Russians have the honor of having detonated the largest nuclear bomb ever at a whopping 58 megatons. The Hiroshima bomb was barely a kiloton. Of course, after the U.S. and Russia ceased their activities, the Chinese decided to get in on the act. But that's a different story for a different documentary. --Kristian St. Clair

More than bombs..........2007-02-23
This was a very interesting movie. It not only gives the historical development of atomic/thermonuclear weaponry, but presents it all within the context of the Arms Race and the Cold War. As I grew up nearing the end of the Cold War, this movie helped me gain some perspective on the cultural context of my youth. I had told my 25 year-old coworker about this movie and he said, "Cold War? What's that??" It's a very fascinating movie on many levels. There are two or three other movies in this series, but this is the place to start.
Grace and peace,
Jeffrey
Great Movie.......2006-09-04
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I would reccomend it to anyone. I had only one complaint and that was about the footage of some of the bombs exploding. They would use music or shots of the earth's surface coming closer and it would tense up until the exact second the bomb exploded. It was kind of unexpected. A good example is the shot of the first thermo-nuclear bomb the U.S. detonated. I would have liked to see the explosion starting from before it actually exploded, kind of like a simulation of a live viewing. Instead they throw it right into your face unexpectedly. It seems like a trick they used to make the movie more exciting, but somehow it doesn't work. They also showed the names of the bomb exploding after it exploded. It would have been better had they showed the names before it blew up. It's like when you hear something explode and you barely turn around to see the explosion starting but you don't get a good chance to relax a bit and see where it is going to explode. Not all the shots were like this of course, but some of the good ones were. Of course the movie is about the history and about the amazing story of the bomb. With that note, it is a great movie, and everyone should watch it.
NOT SOMETHING TO WATCH WHILE ONE IS EATING - - - -.......2006-04-19
- - - - THINKING HOWEVER WOULD BE IDEAL DURING VIEWING!
IN A NUTSHELL: ATOMIC BOMB TESTING = PRACTICE MAKES BIGGER YIELDS!
A very direct and comprehensive look at the era of nuclear testing by the United States, including all its component parts.
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE COLD WAR'S MUNITIONS
This rather sobering documentary is organized in linear form. It begins, literally start at the beginning - "The Manhattan Project" [Einstein's letter to Roosevelt in 1938] and proceeds toward the end of this era - The First Real Treaty Banning Atmospheric Testing - by the United States and Soviet Union - 1963.
THE IN-BETWEEN = ATOMIC TESTING ON A WHOLESALE BASIS: 1945-1963
The film concentrates on the in-between, where 331 atmospheric nuclear tests were conducted by the United States. We see an expose of the progression and objectives of the tests, which sadly do include the effects of the atomic blasts on living things; pigs, sheep, rats. Not good for youngsters, but needed to give perspective to what is entailed in atomic testing on a wholesale basis.
There are frequent interviews with scientists, soldiers and newsreels too. Much of what is shown has only recently become declassified, and it is very simply though articulatly presented.
CONCLUSIONS: THAT IS FOR ALL OF 'US' TO DECIDE!
The conclusions are literally for us to decide [for a welcomed change] and this video will mean different things to different people, which is as it should be.
ABOUT THE VIDEO: YES - I WISH I HAD THE DVD - IT HAS EXTRA FEATURES -
But - - - I don't have the DVD. The VHS however, is excellent, and perhaps something like this is better received and digested on a less-is-more basis. If that is your thinking, this video, which most public libraries seem to have will do quite nicely. If you are buying this, it seems that the DVD and the interesting features it has, including the 3D effects, would be interesting.
BOTTOM LINE: NOT ENTERTAINMENT AND NOT FOR CHILDREN
Shatner's restrained narration and the incredibly well organized presentation of classified material, interviews and newsreels is literally in a class by itself. There's alot here, so be prepared for a long viewing, even without the extra DVD features.

Wow!.......2006-01-30
This is a MUST movie for those who like this kind of history. The movie covers it all and much more. From the beginning to the end, it really is the Atomic Bomb Movie!
intrguing & visually beautiful.......2005-12-06
Overall an excellent & informative film- visually stunning and well integrated, progressing through the history and politics of nuclear weapons. I thought from a scientific persepective, no one explained the phenomena seen- the various pressure waves, radiation aura, and condensation clouds and what causes them. Perhaps it would be less interesting to a non technical viever but after awhile, I found the stunning colors & clouds with symphonic music a little tiresome- perhaps some scientific explanation would be nice 'special feature' on the DVD. Overall though a worthwhile purchase.
