Product Description
A single Canadian Catalina and its crew averted a second Pearl Harbor, Leslie Roberts wrote in There Shall Be Wings. In early 1942, the pilot (Leonard Birchall) and crew of a Catalina PBY flying boat spotted the advance of a Japanese fleet steaming toward Ceylon. Before being shot down and taken as prisoners of war, they were able to alert the British to the approaching fleet. For this action, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill named Birchall The Savior of Ceylon, and declared it one of the most important single contributions to the Allied victory. All wars produce heroes. But rarely in a global conflict do the actions of one-man effect the direction and possibly even the result of the whole war. But in Leonard Birchalls case that is precisely what happened. In 1942 while on his first reconnaissance mission out on the British base in Ceylon, Birchall spotted the Japanese fleet on its way to attack his base at Ceylon. Knowing he would be shot down, Birchall radioed his find back to his base before his plane was shot down. Birchalls heroism did not end with that exploit. As the senior Allied officer in four Japanese POW camps the resistance he lead decreased the Allied death rate from an average of 30% to less then 2%. While in prison Birchall kept a detailed diary which be buried to avoid detection. Birchalls diary was dug up after the war and formed the basis for a number of successful war crime trials. Winston Churchill would later call Birchall, The Saviour of Ceylon.

Unsung Heroes of the B-29's
ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD ASIN: B000JTJ968 |
Product Description
The B-29 bomber, which saw action almost exclusively in the Pacific Theater during World War II, represented a giant leap forward technologically from the B-17s and B-24s that flew over Europe. And while the crews of these older bombers won fame for their exploits, the B-29 flyers didn't enjoy the same accolades, for the public perception was that their seemingly perfect planes allowed them to perform their missions with impunity. As UNSUNG HEROES OF THE B-29s reveals, the truth was far more complicated,. The perfect missions from high above Japanese defenses were balanced by scores of dead-low bombing runs without guns into the face of determined kamikaze defenses. Captured crews suffered horribly in Japanese prison camps. And the rush to develop the B-29 claimed scores of lives in hurry-up testing, where design and manufacturing flaws were paid for in blood before the plane even entered active service. UNSUNG HEROES OF THE B-29 also includes a blow-by-blow account of the mission to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima from Paul Tibbets, the pilot.

(English Language version of "ZHTO H ELLAS"; No Subtitles; 111 minutes) Greek Independence Day Celebrations in America. Parades, Floats, Interviews and more in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and Tarpon Springs, Florida. This documentary by Prof. Pavlos Kapetanopoulos combines interviews in the English Language (95%) as well as Greek Independence Day Parades and Celebrations in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Toronto (Canada) and Tarpon Springs, Florida. The Hellenic War for Independence began on March 25, 1821 and it took another 91 years to liberate Epirus and Macedonia from the Turks in the Balkan Wars after more than 400 years of slavery. The struggle went on for the Greeks in World War I. Interviews from surviviors give us an understanding of this constant vigil for freedom including the genocide of the Greek people of Asia Minor where up to two million Greeks were killed between 1915-1922. And most importantly, Greece's critical role in World War II which led to the allied victory. Greece lost four times more people than the United States, including the battle against the communist who invaded Greece after the war. All these heroes fought for freedom and are honored in this video.

Description
Europe's Secret Armies' is not only an exploration of the stories behind the resistance and partisan groups that formed to fight a hated oppressor. These were civilian armies, formed by ordinary men and women left with no other option but to go underground and strike back. The series hears from those who were not content to bend the knee or were not prepared to be part of Adolf Hitler's ever-growing Third Reich. The series also investigates the scope and style of resistance within Nazi Germany itself. Despite the Enabling Act these groups, which were often born of fear and resentment, were numerous before the war and many survived through it. Organisations such as the Solf Circle, the Kreisau Circle, the Eilbeck Comrades and the New Beginnen played a major role in the gradual erosion of Hitler's power on the home front.DVD:
