What sounds like the high-concept romantic comedy pitch from hell--widower president falls for smart lobbyist while the world watches--is actually intelligent, charming, touching, and quite funny. Granted, it's wish fulfillment all the way (when was the last time you saw a president who was truly presidential?), but in the capable hands of writer Aaron Sorkin (TV's Sports Night) and director Rob Reiner, The American President is incredibly enjoyable entertainment with quite a few ideas about both romance and the government. Michael Douglas stars as the president, who after three years in office starts thinking about the possibility of dating. When he auspiciously encounters cutthroat environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), sparks begin to crackle and the two begin a tentative but heartfelt romance. Of course, his job gets in the way--their first kiss is interrupted by a Libyan bombing--but darn it if these two kids aren't going to try and make it work! However, they hadn't counted on the president's Republican antagonist (Richard Dreyfuss), who starts carping about family values. The predictable plot--Douglas finally goes to bat for his lady and his country--is leavened by Sorkin's wonderful, snappy dialogue and a light touch from the usually subtle-as-a-sledgehammer Reiner. Both manage to create a believable White House-office atmosphere (with a crack staff including Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith, and Samantha Mathis) as well as a plausible and funny dating scenario. The true success of the movie, though, rides squarely on Douglas and Bening; this is unequivocally Douglas's best comedic performance (ergo his best performance, period) and Bening, usually such a good bad girl, takes a standard career-woman role and fleshes it out magnificently. You can see in an instant why Douglas would fall for her. One of the best unsung romantic comedies of the '90s. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars A lot of politics and some romance........2007-06-16

The American President is a lot or politics with some romance thrown in for good measure. President Andrew Shepard and Sydney Ellen Wade, lobbyist, manage to light a spark in each other while overcoming turmoil in the political arena. Does it work? All I can say it that the President manages to walk away with a heart.

It's amazing really. I never think about the personal life of our President. I'm not sure exactly what I thought he did outside of the oval office (except fiddle around at his ranch a lot, but that's another story.) I guess this movie just puts things in to perspective. It made me realize there is a man behind the President.

And, It's really weird watching the political take on things before 9/11. So many things have changed.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect President (if you have liberal views).......2007-06-15

"The American President" is one of my confort movies...you know, the ones you watch over and over to cheer yourself up when you want to escape the world. Michael Douglas is the President I wish we had, courageous, funny, extremely bright and able to inspire a nation to step up to its challenges and face them honestly. As this is a romance there is a equally focused and idealistic love interest played by Annette Benning who does not water down her character or make her a simpering trophy wife.

The rest of the cast is wonderful too...Michael J. Fox, Martin Sheen and the rest of the President's "staff" are admirable, familiar characters in this nicely written script. If you are not a staunch conservative, this movie will inspire feelings of patriotism that ironically usually fall into the domain of right wing politicos....

The American President gives you a degree of comfort that we sorely need. To paraphrase Richard Dreyfuss in the movie...."the pride is back!"

One of the most charming and critically acclaimed films of 2003, the New Zealand hit Whale Rider effectively combines Maori tribal tradition with the timely "girl power" of a vibrant new millennium. Despite the discouragement of her gruff and disapproving grandfather (Rawiri Paratene), who nearly disowns her because she is female and therefore traditionally disqualified from tribal leadership, 12-year-old Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) is convinced that she is a tribal leader, and sets about to prove it. Rather than inflate this story (from a novel by Witi Ihimaera) with artificial sentiment, writer-director Niki Caro develops very real and turbulent family relationships, intimate and yet torn by a collision between stubborn tradition and changing attitudes. The mythic whale rider--the ultimate symbol of Maori connection to nature--is also the harbinger of Pai's destiny, and the appealing Castle-Hughes gives a luminous, astonishingly powerful performance that won't leave a dry eye in the house. With its fresh take on a familiar tale, Whale Rider is definitely one from the heart. --Jeff Shannon

Description

There is a legend that Paikea rode on the back of a whale and led his people to New Zealand. Since that time tradition has decreed that the first-born male descendant will become chief of the tribe. Then Pai is born...and she is a girl. She grows up within a close-knit village which retains the tribes traditional spiritual relationship with the sea and their warrior values. Although loved by all, Pai faces rejection from her grandfather, Koro, who is brokenhearted that there is no grandson to carry on the line.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring tale of a girl who would not give up.......2007-05-31

Keisha Castle-Hughes shines in the role of a lifetime. She plays a Maori girl whose mother died in childbirth, and her father, in his grief, abandons the child to be raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather, at first, rejects her bitterly as he wanted a boy who could carry on the tribal traditions. Although he in time warms to the child, he repeatedly berates and humilates her when she shows independence, promise, and inventiveness. Her father returns for her to take her to live with him and his new wife, but the sea calls to her and she cannot leave her homeland, her traditions, and her destiny. As she returns, her grandfather is working hard to recruit an island boy who might lead the community in the old ways. Like many of us he does not suspect, or see, the treasure right in front of him. It is a story of tenacity, and irrepressible spirit. It is a story of family love, and one that is not soon forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Whale Rider.......2007-05-21

This movie is a moving portrail of a powerful tribal bloodline that has almost forgot the ways of their life that keep them strong and vibrant . Prevokes thoughts of our own Amercian Indian tribes forced to live a different life on a reservation. Acting is excellent, evoking intense emotion. Music moves the viewer with constant beautiful passionate tones... Happy ending!!!!! Thoughts of the movie last days after viewing it..

5 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful movie.......2007-04-10

This is a story about an indigenous people living in harmony with nature - an earth-based people experiencing the growing pains of having their own traditions challenged from within.

These stories are important to experience, a point of view that only can expand the myopic mind of so many of those who only have a white man's eye view of the world. Such a view is a very, very limited view indeed.

The Maori are a proud, warrior like people with a history that risks getting lost in this increasingly modern world. Faced with accepting a girl as the potential inheritor of sacred power, the proud grandfather who lost his daughter and twin grandson of the young girl is bereft almost beyond hope. He cannot see the gift he has been given through his grief over the gifts he has lost.

Yes, there are whales - and yes, they need help. And they get it, in an incredible scene that is almost beyond belief. This is a beautiful movie.Once Were Warriors

5 out of 5 stars Destined to be a Classic.......2007-03-29

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The first time I saw it, it was required for a British Literature class I took in college. I didn't want to see it because it was one of those movies that I felt was being forced on me. The movie theaters charge so much nowadays just to see a movie. However, I am glad that I did see it. I recommend it for anybody who loves to cry a lot and they better take a big box of Kleenex with them. There was not a dry eye in the movie house the day I saw it.

Playing the president's kin in the modern fairy tale First Daughter is the most grown-up role yet for Dawson's Creek cutie Katie Holmes. Samantha McKenzie (Holmes) has lived all her life on the edge of the political spotlight, but she hopes that she'll get away from it all when she leaves the White House for college. No such luck. Even though she's able to make friends with her roommate (singer Amerie) and meet a nice guy (Marc Blucas), security is tight in an election year, and the Secret Service follows her wherever she goes. First Daughter isn't particularly original (it was the working title for Mandy Moore's Chasing Liberty, which opened in theaters earlier the same year, 2004), but it's a chuckle-inducing girlie movie that's worth watching for Holmes. Also, Michael Keaton is especially likable as a president and dad. That's a big change for Holmes, who as Dawson's Creek's Joey Potter was a poster child for daughters with dysfunctional fathers. --David Horiuchi

Description

"Once Upon A Time there lived a lovely girl named Samantha. She had everything she could possibly wish for, and lived in a beautiful white house. The White House Katie Holmes stars as First Daughter Samantha Mackenzie _ a sheltered young woman who just wants a normal school experience, away from the influence of her parents. Only trouble is, her dad (Michael Keaton) is the President of the United States! But nothing will stop Samantha, so, under Secret Service surveillance and a nonstop media glare, she meets _ and falls hard for _ a handsome student who has a secret existence of his own."

5 out of 5 stars Cute movie.......2007-05-06

Katie Holmes plays Samantha, a young girl who happpens to be the President's daughter and has no freedom. She wants a life as a normal college student, but that proves to be impossible with a bunch of secret service men following her around everywhere. Samantha wishes for more freedom. When she meets a handsome college student named James, she gets her wish. The sneak out together, and go to the movies and to a fair. Samantha is wildly happy and feels like she is living for the first time. She just wants to break free from her parents and grow up. But it's hard because the media is always following her around, writing about everything she does in college even though she's just trying to have fun. Samantha makes a new friend, her dorm roomate Mia and she falls in love with James. But James has a secret of his own. I like the ending, when she drives off back to college under the night sky and how a brazen little girl grew up in a white house but it wasn't until she left that house, however, did she truly find home. At last, Samantha got her wish and she was free. Freedom is such a wonderful thing. I can't wait to go off to college and be on my own, too. It's really more about being indepedent and about being free then it is about some love romance between two people. Forest Whittaker is a genuis director, and I love his other work, "Hope Floats." Katie Holmes is a good actress and very sweet and cute. But it's too bad she married that weird little man Tom Cruise and had a baby with him. Tom Cruise is so short and ugly. What could possibly anyone see in him? He's so, well, weird. But hopefully she'll come to her senses and divorce him. And, at 28, is way too young to be a stepmother to his two children. Those aren't even his real children. They're adopted, along with Nicole Kidman. So, I like watching Katie onscreen, but in real life the girl has to come to senses.

4 out of 5 stars unpredictable! refreshing!.......2007-04-25

To be perfectly honest, after the first hour I thought I had the whole movie figured out... and then it twisted in the opposite direction and I was totally shocked!
Katie Holmes plays Samantha MacKenzie, the President's Daughter who is trying to fit in and have a normal college experience. Only there are some things in her way, such as security guards following her everywhere, press close on her tail, and she just can't get rid of her White House mannerisms that kinda make everyone around her flinch and go "what was that?" Amerie plays her roommate Mia who is used to lots of attention and has trouble letting it go. Seemingly perfect timing, Sam meets her perfect guy (Marc Blucas playing James)... a little too perfect at first, as they are both brainiacs, kind, funny and well, he's crazy about her. It seems everything is going to work out perfectly! I was almost disappointed when the movie twisted in a completely different direction!

While I was at first shocked, I quickly got over it and was pleasantly surprised and proud that the script succeeded in being unpredictable (because most movies are predictable). Then I became disappointed. It seemed the film was going steady in a good direction, and I felt kind of let down, like they could have done more, like the story could have developed into something truly charming and touching, however it seems they decided to veer away from the romance of the film and focus more on the main character's adolescance and learning about herself. It seemed to me like the movie was strolling along and then suddenly dropped off a cliff, however safely landing.
It was not unpleasant. Despite the twist, they managed to give it a cute (although almost cliff hanger) ending, and a beautiful final scene. I must admit I was slightly disappointed with the outcome between Sam and James, but I guess I can't always be satisfied!

A very entertaining film however some letdowns and [I feel] almost unnecessary twists. Nevertheless, I have no doubt you will enjoy it as I did. The script is witty and aimed more at preteens and teens then adults, as it is completely clean, and some of the jokes just won't reach adults as they are just not very funny, however I think I might have laughed at them when I was younger so it's not totally hopeless.

The acting makes up for most of these faults however, as Katie Holmes was charming and fun to watch, as was Marc Blucas who isn't exactly ugly either!

2 out of 5 stars Well, I Need More Romance, Not Katie's Dancing and Sliding.......2007-03-23

I give only two stars to this Fox's romantic comedy "First Daughter" not because of its unlucky resemblance with Mandy Moore's "Chasing Liberty" or the acting of Katie Holmes, which is not bad at all. She is sweet and cute even though the film completely misses its target audiences by including her embarrassing `table dancing' sequences.

No, I am disappointed by something else. "First Daughter" is pleasant, maybe too pleasant for me. I was thinking that the film is about the romantic life of Katie Holmes' character Samantha, only daughter of US President Mackenzie (Michael Keaton) running for the second term (reminding us of the real-life counterpart George W. Bush and his twin daughters). What happens if Samantha goes to college and falls in love with another student?

Though some hints are given, the film wisely removes direct mention to the politics in real life. You don't know much about the president himself or his policies and party (except that he is very likable), but that kind of decision is understandable because the film is meant to be a romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Still "First Daughter" does not have much romance in it. When the film should be romantic with Samantha's romance with the resident adviser Marc Blucas, it fails to be so, its romance interrupted by the unnecessary plot twist and the film's attitude after that point, which takes itself too seriously. The silly antics like water slide episode and Katie in blue bikini do not help, and neither does the subplot about Samantha's friendship with her roommate (played by Amerie).

The film is directed by Forest Whitaker who won Oscar for his terrific acting in "The Last King of Scotland." I don't know what attracted him to this film, but I know his orthodox approach does not work here, ending up with rather tepid storytelling and bland characters. We need wit, satire, or at least biting kind of humor, and wilder romance and more imagination and fantasy. Katie Holmes is charming, but her getting drunk and doing table dance does not exactly make her so more.

1 out of 5 stars This movie was awful........2006-11-16

Okay, I was actually at the video store looking for a copy of Drive Me Crazy and I found one for 26 dollars. Then I found it in a double pack with First Daughter for only 15 dollars.

I got the double pack because it was cheaper and decided to have a look at First Daughter.

I had to turn off the movie after 15 minutes. Katie Holmes's character had the personality of cardboard. She seems to spend her time walking around with a fake smile plastered on her face pretending to have fun.

These movies are always the same - rich girl wants a real life, she rebels and falls in love with some handsome guy who looks like a model, he teachs her about real life, they fall in love, they either have a fight or betray each other, then get back together at the end.

Katie Holmes bored me and so did the guy she fell in love with. I could see what was going to happen next. The whole movie was so sickly sweet I literally wanted to throw up.

I think I'll stick to Drive Me Crazy and just forget that I own this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2006-10-13

This movie was fantastic. It was clean, yet entertaining and endearing. I loved being able to watch it with my little sisters after buying the DVD. The twist in the plot totally surprised me, and yet pleased me. Blucas does an amazing job in this film. A breath of fresh air compared to Chasing Liberty.

5 out of 5 stars A Miniseries Masterpiece.......2007-06-20

This is the 2-disk set of Eleanor & Franklin, "The Early Years" and "The White House Years." The DVD's present the story of how these two strong individuals met and fell in love and how they survived a tumultous marriage. This would be at a time when the world would face the greatest war in history.

Eleanor & Franklin is a 1976-77 production and runs 6 hours. The series was made for HBO at what must have cost a king's ransom. Costumes, scenery, vintage cars, and all the rest--production values are at the highest level. Yes, the Roosevelts were from the upper crust of American society and lived privileged lives. But they sacrificed a lot for their country in its greatest hour of need as these dramatizations show so well.

Casting is superb. Jane Alexander plays Eleanor Roosevelt and Edward Hermann plays her cousin and later, husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). The outside jacket of the DVD set says the miniseries won 18 Emmys back in the 1970's. After viewing it recently for the first time, I wonder how the series didn't win more. It is a true masterpiece.

In the early-1940's, Benito Mussolini is supposed to have scoffed at the idea of FDR leading the U. S. in a world war. Mussolini ridiculed FDR as a paralytic who could never lead his country to victory. Not long after, Mussolini and his criminal partner, Adolph Hitler, would eat those words. FDR's knowledge of world history and past wars, his experience in the military and in government, and his courage and resolve in the face of evil were exactly what was needed.

For all his flaws as a man, I shudder to think what might have happened had FDR not been U. S. President during this time. Without question, his partnership with Winston Churchill saved Western Civilization. Through it all, Eleanor was his supporter and confidant, although you might wonder at times if he deserved her.

Anyone interested in the 1930's and 40's and the tremendous world conflict known as World War II needs to add this bargain-priced set to his library. These DVD's will provide insight one can get nowhere else.

4 out of 5 stars Eleanor and Franklin Well Worth Watching.......2007-06-08

This double feature DVD is well worth the watching as it illuminates one of the most powerful and faninating couples of the 20th century. From their early years to the final journey of President Roosevelt from Warm Springs to Washington D.C. you will be rivetted by their relationship. I highly recommend this DVD set.Eleanor and Franklin Double Feature (The Early Years / The White House Years)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-09

In comparison with Warm Springs, Franklin was a complete different man in this movie. Outstanding performances by all actors. This movie was highly captivating. This movie helps you to understand Eleanor Roosevelt and what she went through in her marriage to Franklin. Great movie!

5 out of 5 stars Quality Product at Very Reasonable Price.......2007-05-03

The ABC Miniseries of 1976/1977 has been transfered, and to my eyes the color has been restored, so they both look as good as the original presentations. A plus is that they are presented in a widescreen version. I have never seen them in that presentation format. HBO has does an excellent job on these TV films - I hope they work on other old TV films! And who can argue with a price - two top notch discs for a price one paid for the original DVD release of THE EARLY YEARS! The story of the Roosevelts based on the Lash book presented in an excellent story transfer to film.

5 out of 5 stars Buying on faith.......2007-04-21

The original miniseries were 200m and 156m respectively, and the "product details" on this DVD omit the running time of the discs, so I am buying them on faith that they haven't been butchered to fit. Both movies were excellent, and I hope they survived the transfer intact.

I bought this for my girls ages 4 and a half and 6. They love it. I wish there were a few more episodes on there but still it is great. A good buy if you are looking for a non violent cartoon with a bunch of fun!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I remembered.......2007-03-30

You really have to embrace the kid in you to enjoy this wacky series. I had to be in the mood to watch these before I could get into them, something I normally don't have to do with cartoons from my childhood. So yes, these have aged. That said, they're STILL better than %99 of the trash on TV today & deserves to have the rest of the episodes on DVD. The cartoons in this set are:

Disc One
#01. Winter Olympics (1982 pilot, AKA Gadget In Winterland)
#02. Monster Lake
#03. Down On the Farm
#04. Gadget at the Circus
#05. The Amazon

Disc Two
#06. Health Spa
#07. The Boat
#08. Haunted Castle
#09. Race To the Finish
#10. The Ruby
#11. A Star Is Lost

5 out of 5 stars Wowsers....what an excellent starting set!!!.......2007-03-13

I just picked up my copy of the first Inspector Gadget episodes, and they are such a great investment to my collection! What Gen-Xer didn't love this series when it first aired from 1983-86?!

So great to see "The Pharoah" episode again, which had the most eerie score of the first season! But each episode carries so many memories as Gadget, Penny & Brain trek through Metro City and across the globe in stopping Dr. Claw's nefarious crimes and plots for world domination! My sister & I became quite the geography gurus in grammar school as an upshot of regular viewings of Gadget's adventures...something positive and sorely lacking from today's animated tripe!

While this box set is indeed an auspicious start, I would be most eager to see the second season ('85-'86) come to DVD from DIC. What made those episodes even better were the newly automated Gadget house and having the episodes grouped into three's...namely, Gadget faced off against the same MAD agent(s) in different perilous traps/crimes. Dr. Spectrum was the Mac-Daddy agent of them all with his ghost pellets ("Ghost Catchers"), de-materializing phone gun ("Busy Signal"), and his most diabolical invention...his nightmare wave generator ("Bad Dreams Are Made of These", hands-down the best Gadget epsiode ever made...the story, MAD hideout, weapons, score, sound F/X just ALL perfectly came together in this one!!!)

From the golden age of television miniseries comes this prestigious 1979 production based on Lillian Rogers Parks's memoir, My Thirty Years at the White House, a real-life American Upstairs/Downstairs that chronicles her family's tenure on the White House servant staff through eight presidential administrations. Emmy nominee Oliva Cole stars as Maggie, a proud matriarch with "indomitable spirit and unfailing spunk," and who is determined that her children "are not going to have street ways." She becomes the first colored maid on the presidential family floor, beginning with the William Howard Taft administration. Her polio-stricken daughter, Lillian (portrayed as an adult by Leslie Uggams) eventually joins her during Herbert Hoover's administration and likewise rises through the ranks to to become a trusted confidante of the First Families.

Backstairs at the White House works on several levels. It is the inspiring personal story of two extraordinary women who had a unique and privileged perspective of the people and events that shaped the first half of the 20th century. It also presents vivid snapshots of the presidents and their families in all their quirks (Mrs. Taft felt that bearded servants brought bad luck), failings, and greatness, as well as such now-obscure personages as New York critic Alexander Woolcott. The stellar cast is comprised of stage and screen veterans and TV favorites. Robert Vaughn (as Woodrow Wilson), Celeste Holm (as Florence Harding), and Ed Flanders (as Calvin Coolidge) were nominated for Emmys, as was Roots costar Louis Gossett Jr. as houseman Levi Mercer. Also notable are a pre-Airplane Leslie Nielsen as chief White House usher Ike Hoover, Cloris Leachman as the chilly supervising housekeeper Mrs. Jaffray, Victor Buono and Julie Harris as reluctant president William Howard Taft and his more formidable wife "Nellie," Eileen Heckart as energetic Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry Morgan, giving 'em hell as Harry Truman. Backstairs at the White can be melodramatic ("You're not married to me, you're married to the White House," Lillian's estranged husband tells her at one point), but it never descends to soap opera. The Emmy-winning makeup is convincing, and the Emmy-nominated screenplay does an admirable job of compressing more than 50 years of history. "What is heard within the walls of the White House is to be forgotten," Maggie is instructed early in her employ. Luckily, daughter Lillian ignored this directive to create a compelling document that puts a human face on the occupants of the real West Wing. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Long Lost Mini-Series.......2007-06-09

I remember this series back when it was premiered in the 70's. I loved it then and wanted to see it again but never found it scheduled. I was thrilled to see it reissued in DVD. Watching it brought back so many memories and I found it still had the charm and splendid acting I remembered from so many years ago. Seeing behind the closed doors of the White House gave a glimpse of a part of history we never see. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Miniseries.......2007-05-15

I watched this mini-series when it orignally aired in 1979 when I was 10 years old. It aired over serveral weeks and my family would gather around the TV to watch it. I have been talking about this series since I was ten and have been dying to see again. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that it had been released on DVD. The minute that I discovered it, I placed my order. It is a great piece of history, with a great cast and I urge everyone to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Backstairs at the Whitehouse.......2007-04-04

This is an excellent series for people of all ages. It is an interesting look at all of the personalities who lived in the White House throughout the years. I have read the book and the series covers much of the same information. You feel sad when the series comes to the end as you wish it could continue!

5 out of 5 stars Good Entertainment.......2007-03-26

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this mini-series. As a matter of fact I had been looking for this for years, ever since it originally aired and was thrilled when I found it on Amazon. If you like American History, you'll love this!

Where is Olivia Cole? The leading actress is this mega star TV miniseries
was truly a gifted actress. The historical ascpects of this story really make it interesting to watch. I recall seeing parts of it during the NBC broadcast of it back in the days of big network TV. Like "Roots", the production value was superlative.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-13

After reading the reviews and awards this documentary has received I was excited to watch it with a friend for whom I'd gotten as a gift. After seeing it I was embarrassed at my selection. Neither of us found the poverty, ignorance, and alcoholism that envelopes this hillbilly culture remotely entertaining. Pitiful is more the word for it. Jesco isn't anyone we can identify or empathize with either as a person or for his struggle live up to his father's talent which he obviously didn't inherit. Jesco talks in retrospect about his wilder days which, by the time this film was made, were long over. Jesco sits surrounded by his Elvis paraphenalia with nothing much interesting to say at this point. Jesco on the porch of his trailer talking about his squirrel rifle. Ya. The real story here would have been about Jesco's father who was tragically murdered in a dispute with neighbors. You don't have to know anything about this style of mountain dancing to know he was the true master of it. As a final note, perhaps mercifully or not, this film is way too short. In the version I bought there are some boring outtakes and a Part 2 where Jesco goes to Hollywood to appear on Rosanne. I guess Tom Arnold thought this was good.

5 out of 5 stars stereotypes on steroids.......2006-08-17

For the uninitiated, this is a documentary about Jesco White, "the last of the mountain dancers," and his wild and crazy family. This little acre of Mulletland is pervaded by gasoline huffin', whiskey drinkin', shotgun shootin' madness, as well as loyalty to family, love for Elvis and naivete about just what the filmmaker, Jacob Young, is doing.

"The Dancing Outlaw" is a masterpiece in a genre all its own. Its strength is found in the tension between the absolute hilarity of the dialogue from its main characters (Jesco, Norma Rae, Mayme, Birty Mae and Dorsey) and the guilt one feels about having fun at someone else's expense. It is uncomfortable for most of us to like people and laugh at them at the same time, but it is a powerful mix perfected in this gem. Guilty pleasures are sometimes the best ones, right?

Phrases, sentences, and stories from "The Dancing Outlaw" will stick in your mind for years to come. I guess you could call this genre "comedic ethnography," as it comes in a public TV, Appalachian anthropology package. But seriously folks, no one watches this to learn tap dancing steps...

I am proud to have tracked Jesse, Mayme and kin down in Boone County back in 1994, and spent an enjoyable afternoon with them. Friendly folks with great stories and a penchant for unforgettable conversation. I didnt even get shot at. In the neck, I mean.

Jesco had a brief shot at stardom (he guested on "Roseanne" back in the 90s), but it seems fame and fortune have now passed him by. It is a shame that he and the White clan (and Jacob Young, for that matter) did not profit more from this wonderful film.

4 out of 5 stars New vs. original cut.......2006-01-30

I noticed two main differences between the "Dancing Outlaw" DVD with "Dancing Outlaw II" by Jacob Young and the original documentary as shown on WV public television. In the original, when Jesse is relating the "tragety" of the shooting that killed D.Ray and wounded Dorsey and Jesse, he says "That was the first time I had been shot in the neck before." The DVD has a different cut in which Jesse leaves out "before". The second difference I noticed was that Bertie May, in the first version said about D. Ray "He knew 52 more steps than any other." That was the whole sentence. In the DVD a different take is used in which she says "He knew 52 more steps than any other mountain dancer." Better English but both changes take away the quirky eccentricity of the original versions.

They seem like minor differences but to us purists they are significant.

For the uninitiated, just don't watch "Dancing Outlaw II, Jessco Goes to Hollywood." It will destroy the fresh honesty that still shows through in the new "Dancing Outlaw."

5 out of 5 stars The best 25 minute biographical film ever made.......2005-08-16

I had the world DVD premiere for this film in February 2005 at the South Charleston Museum in South Charleston, WV. Hundreds showed up - and for good reason. It is the best selling film ever made inside West Virginia - about a West Virginian. It is also the best short documentary about an unusual man and his life ever made, making my Top Ten list of all times - in Facets Multimedia. The director, Jacob Young, watched films by Les Blank and Errol Morris, and using some of their style and his own, created a masterpiece. At one time the state library of West Virginia had at least 8 copies of this film, loaning all of them out for a decade or more. It is hilarious, sad, tragic, insightful - and about everything else one can show in a film. It stands with any film, including Errol Morris' masterpieces like THE FOG OF WAR.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to get to Heaven..gotta raise a little Hell.......2005-07-31

I have worn out 2 VHS copies of Dancing Outlaw..Freakish,Twisted,Laugh out loud FUNNY..and SCARY all at the same time. Anyone who enjoys the dark side of Americana will cherish this DVD... Jesco and his Kin remind us," only the strong survive and that's all".....

Wilkie Collins is hot. One of the most underrated Victorian mystery writers, Collins offers up eerie, evocative tales. While The Moonstone may be his best-known novel (it was made into a 1996 telefilm starring Sense and Sensibility's Greg Wise), The Woman in White is an equally affecting and engaging tale. A timeless gothic story, it is told from the perspective of Marian (Tara Fitzgerald), who's staying at a villa with her cousin Laura (Justine Waddell). The women become involved with a sympathetic painter and a slew of duplicitous aristocrats, including one played by James Wilby. Then there's that woman (who looks a lot like Laura), cloaked in white, who keeps running around the garden grounds at night. Fitzgerald is far too gorgeous to be the plain Marian, heroine of the novel, but costumers make a valiant--if unsuccessful--attempt to make her look dowdy and less attractive than Waddell. Fitzgerald is so lovely and likable that audiences are easily drawn into her predicament. Who is the mysterious woman in white? How and why has Laura disappeared? Simon Callow is particularly notable as the suave Count Fosco, who may or may not be who he seems to be. The Woman in White was made into a 1982 miniseries and five other film versions. Trivia note: Ian Richardson appears in both the 1982 version and this one. --N.F. Mendoza

Description

Set in the late 19th century, this adaptation of Wilkie Collins' mystery thriller is a slowly unraveling nightmare that reveals a dark world of powerful and dangerous men.

A young drawing master, Mr. Hartright (Andrew Lincoln), is hired by the fretful Mr. Fairlie (Ian Richardson) to teach his two nieces, Marian (Tara Fitzgerald) and Laura (Justine Waddell). On his way to their house, Hartright is startled by a mysterious encounter with a ghostly woman dressed in white.

When he meets Fairlie's nieces, he is struck by Laura's resemblance to the woman in white, and tells Marian and Laura of the ethereal woman. Determined to learn all they can about the woman in white, the girls find themselves drawn into a vortex of secrets, crime and treacherous involvement with the fascinating, but sinister, Count Fosco (Simon Callow).

4 out of 5 stars A grand Victorian gothic adventure, filled with madness, stratagems, love, graves and dark, dark woods.......2007-05-01

"The bad dreams always come back again like unwanted friends," says Marion Fairlie, who with her half-sister, Laura, lives in a vast mid-Victorian country estate. "And last night I found myself in Limmeridge churchyard. Normally, people who are dead stay dead, just as normally it is the criminals who are locked up rather than the victims. But then, there was nothing normal about what happened to us..." And we're off on a first-class gothic story of madness, deception and villainy, based on Wilkie Collins' great novel of Victorian mystery. It's a good idea to pay close attention, because there are plots within plots, yet they all center on a cunning and ruthless scheme which involves, what else, money, lots of money.

Marion Fairlie (Tara Fitzgerald) and her sister, Laura Fairlie (Justine Wadell) are devoted to each other. Marion is fierce and protective; Laura is softer and much more romantic. Marion has no money of her own; Laura will inherit riches when she comes of age. Marion has no marriage prospects that we know of; Laura has been pledged sometime ago to Sir Percival Glyde (James Wilby), an altogether too charming aristocrat. They are the wards of their uncle, a fussy, condescending, immensely self-centered hypochondriac (Ian Richardson). All seems to be quite routine, but then a young artist, Walter Hartright (Andrew Lincoln), is engaged to teach them drawing and artistic appreciation. And when he arrives at night to the local train station, there is no carriage, so off he sets out on foot to the estate. In the dark woods he encounters a strange woman, dressed all in white, wandering about and speaking of things he does not understand, who then disappears. Are we uneasy? Yes, and so is he and the sisters when they come to realize the strange woman looks much like Laura. Later, does love emerge between Walter and Laura? Does a bud bloom? Is there a misunderstanding that sends Walter away and results in Laura marrying Sir Percival? Does a canker gnaw? And do secrets slowly come to light about the relationships among Laura, Marian and the woman in white...do we learn to be deeply suspicious of Sir Percival's intentions...do we come to enjoy the style and manners of Sir Percival's close friend, Count Fosco (Simon Callow)...and do we eventually realize the foul depths of depravity, as well as the power of honor and true love, that humanity is capable of? Do we visit Victorian insane asylums, see falls from high towers, dig open graves in the middle of the night and watch retribution arrive amidst the roaring flames of a locked church?

Well, of course, and it's a grand journey for us.

This BBC/Masterpiece Theater program features fine acting and outstanding production values. To fit Collins' 500-plus-page novel into a television show of less than 120 minutes means a good deal had to be cut or abridged, and some changes were made most likely to achieve greater impact in the little time available. Still, taken on its own terms, the production of The Woman in White in my opinion works very well as a moody, romantic, dark television tale. Tara Fitzgerald as Marion gives a commanding performance as a woman determined to protect and then save her sister. James Wilby as Sir Percival manages the clever feat of slowly letting us see the depraved slime beneath the skin, who still has charm amidst the villainy. Ian Richardson as the young women's uncle almost steals the show. He gives such a bossy and pungent performance it almost unbalances the story every time he appears. Perhaps the weakest of the main parts is Simon Callow as Count Fosco. The Count is simply a monster, yet a supremely civilized and charming one. Collins described him as being of immense girth. Callow does a fine, mannered job of it, but to me he lacks a little of the monstrosity of evil.

At one point, Marian tells us, "My sister and I are so fond of Gothic novels, we sometimes act as if we were in them." Little did she know what was in store for herself and Laura.

The DVD transfer is fine although a little soft. There are no extras of any importance.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, as a minimalist synopsis of the novel.......2007-02-05

This is an excellent former Masterpiece Theatre presentation. At only two hours it takes on only the main plot thread of the lengthy original novel, which has been called the first English mystery novel. This two-hour version is fast-paced, suspenseful, atmospheric, and engrossing, but it is the "Cliffs Notes" version at best. The performances are convincing, the production seems high-budget, with many outdoor scenes and lovely costumes and sets. Go to the original novel for wonderful subplots and fascinating, intricate, pungent, detail.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2006-12-06

I recently watched this movie after reading the exceptional novel by Wilkie Collins. I am not a purist. I realize that liberties must be taken when a book is converted to movie format. But this was downright ridiculous. When one must change the NAME of a main character just to fit in with their flawed storyline, that goes too far. Her name is Marian Halcombe, not Marian Fairlie. The brilliantly villainous Count Fosco is relegated to a simpering, unimaginative role. As for the plot, it is so far off from the actual story that they should have re-titled the movie. They have Hartwright involved in a scandal, they make Glyde into a sexual predator, and that's just the beginning of their perverse changes. If they had kept to the REAL plot, I think they could have pulled it off much better. Instead, they wasted time making characters who are nonexistent in the book into significant ones, and putting in scenes that changed the most fundamental parts of the story. There was absolutely no reason for any of the asinine changes they made. If I had watched this first, I would never have read the book, and I would have missed out on what is now one of my favorite novels. The book is a million times better. Don't bother with this movie--wait until there is a more faithful adaptation made (or the BBC gets smart and releases theirs on DVD.)

1 out of 5 stars Exceptionally poor - a better version exists.......2006-09-05

The 1998 version pales in comparison with the unavailable 1978/1982 BBC version with the exceptional Alan Badel as the evil Count Fosco. Beware purchasing this as the Ian Richardson version, because Ian Richardson was in both versions. If you must get a copy of "The Woman in White" right now, then order the 1998 version. Otherwise, write, e-mail, call, march and picket WGBH, BBC America and BBC England and lobby them to make the 1982 version available. The earlier version was produced in five 55 minute segments and was an oustanding piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Good Film-Noirish Type Film.......2006-04-26

I highly recommend this movie. Ignore the bad reviews. Perhaps those who have read the book hold a bad opinion of the movie. Most films could benefit from English subtitles, rather than closed captions. I wish WGBH Boston and Warner Brothers would take the hint, as sometimes the English are difficult to understand. They speak softer than Americans, and often the dialect is different as well.

Just as seashells house the sound and spirit of the sea, so too the forest houses the sound and spirit of the legendary fairies. A 1997 Parents' Choice Gold Award winner, Kristen's Fairy House takes its viewers on a quiet journey of many unexpected discoveries. Young Kristen ventures into the peaceful surroundings of an island off the coast of Maine with her talented Aunt Tracy, a storybook artist. Together they explore a wonderful woodsy land dedicated to the creation of fairy houses. As the week--and Kristen's own fairy house project--progresses, the two share simple moments of heartwarming pleasure: a cozy campfire, a breakfast of blueberry pancakes, a late-night waltz in their quaint cottage. The entire movie is shot as a documentary, narrated in retrospective prose by Kristen. Throughout the story, she learns the importance of viewing the world with an artist's eye, appreciating beauty in the smallest packages. Its simple style, harmonious score, and inviting scenery make this short feature tremendously enjoyable for youngsters old enough to ponder the reality of fairies and adults young enough to let them. The videotape package includes a handout, illustrated by Aunt Tracy, that describes tips for building a fairy house like Kristen's. Upon viewing, kids will probably want to dig right in and build their own. --Liane Thomas

4 out of 5 stars My 6-year old really enjoyed it........2007-02-07

From a video standpoint, it's a bit amateurish, but that kind of lends an extra sense of innocence to the story.
My daughter, who is quite taken with fairies at the moment, thought it was wonderful.
Since watching the film, she's wanted to be outdoors more and find places to build fairy houses out of sticks and leaves and other natural objects.
That's a welcome (if temporary) switch from the world of glittery princesses.
My husband and I appreciated the beautiful Maine scenery.
I would have given it 5 stars but I thought it was a bit expensive.

3 out of 5 stars Where the Fairys are........2007-01-04

This is a charming "real people" story. I think it will do well for the 6-10 year olds.
Great for letting children"s imaginations run and certainly sparks creativity!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely, slow-paced story.......2005-12-31

This is a good video for motivating children to look more closely at the natural world surrounding them.

A young girl, Kristen, and her artist aunt go to an island in Maine so that her aunt can paint illustrations for her book. Kristen discovers fairy houses, which are simple, all natural constructions made for fairies. She makes several, and then observes them regularly for signs of fairies. She sees many signs of animal life, not fairy life. At the very end, however, there are signs of - well, you decide!

My children of course wanted to make their own fairy houses, which apparently naturalists now discourage on this particular island in Maine, but I have not stopped my children from picking up bark, twigs, fallen leaves and stones, and propping them up against the base of a tree to make their own fairy houses, particularly in our own yard.

The book is a nice companion to the movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie for children.......2003-11-22

I loved this movie. It was a good bed time movie. I enjoyed it so much that I bought my own.

3 out of 5 stars Magical and Creative.......2002-12-02

What a wonderful story! An inspiration for artists, children and lovers of nature of all ages! Watch the video first, and read the story after. A great idea for lesson plans for literature, art classes, environmental science, etc. Simple effects make it a great inspiration for everyday artful living, birthday parties and more. Thanks to Tracy Kane for this experience in spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-06-06

I found the documentary to be very interesting and I was able to learn a lot about the FBI. I do wish, however, that there was signifcantly more informatino regarding agent training.

3 out of 5 stars General Information on the FBI - but nothing spectacular........2007-02-28

This is a great DVD, however do not expect to get very in-depth about the way the FBI works. A brief history of "The Bureau" is given - much is skipped -- last 3/4 of the DVD is more about the 9/11 attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon.

While these events of 9/11 are important to show how changes occured in the FBI, very little emphasis is placed on Who the FBI is -- What they Investigate -- FBI Training, etc...

This documentary would have benefited greatly if it could have showed the pre-9/11 FBI and then the post-9/11 FBI, because their mission changed overnight -- and is not even close to being the same.

Buy the DVD if you want some general info. on the FBI - but for research purposes, etc.. (or even for those who wish to join the FBI and get a feel for it) you're honestly better of reading books by former agents, etc ...

As previously said, get the DVD if you want some general info. and a very basic understanding of who the FBI is.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary, Esp. Considering All Others on the FBI.......2005-05-15

Considering that there aren't many well put-together documentaries available on the FBI, I thought that this one was excellent. You can only cover so much in two hurs, and I thought that this one did a very good job of it. There is also a very long feature on Hogan's Alley (mock city training center used by the FBI in Virginia) in the Special Features that was shot sometime in the late 80s/early 90s. I highly recommend this DVD if you're interested in a career with the FBI.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly interesting/entertaining........2005-02-04

This is a fairly well-presented documentary on the FBI. The creators of this film did a good job explaining what the FBI's role is, how that role has changed, and what should be expected in the future. It is a fairly superficial documentary, though: don't expect any complex analysis/insights into the operations of the FBI. Nevertheless, the editors did a fairly good job, got some interesting footage, and showed things that rarely are shown.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad, just average........2004-06-26

This DVD was just OK, it wasn't good, and it wasn't bad. It goes in depth about how the FBI works in general, but doesn't go into cases in depth very much (Waco, Hanssen) etc. 90% of the video concentrates on how the FBI works now after 9/11, dealing with terrorism, but there wasn't any piece of it which highlighted thier priorities before 9/11. Some of the material nearly went as far as to being borderline propoganda, but the directors appear to have tried to stay away from that. It highlights some of the FBI's ups, and a few of thier down's. It goes into mostly how the FBI handles security of bigger events, but that was nothing new to me, and shouldn't be for any of you (snipers of roofs, instense screening, gaurds, etc.) Overall, I'd have to recomend you don't watch this, but if you know absolutely nothing about the FBI, this may be a good place to start learning.
