Excellent Collection of Vintage Steam at an Affordable Price.......2001-07-31

This set contains 3 DVDs: 'Steam Giants Across America', '50's and 60's' and 'Twilight of Steam'. 'Steam Giants Across America' covers steam action mainly with UP BigBoys and Challengers. All color 16mm footage with some footage from vintage UP promotional films. '50's and 60's' covers classic railroads and excursion steam. Last, but not least, 'Twilight of Steam' covers Norfolk and Western Steam in it's last days as well as other railroads and their massive engines. There is no duplicate footage among the 3 DVDs and they are all color, mostly 16mm and some standard video of the more recent excursion trains. No annoying banjo music either, so you can listen to the sounds of steam without any interruption. The 'bonus' material is not much of a bonus, just a few paragraphs on some famous trains and robberies. The trivia is worth ignoring.

Great Vintage Views of Classic Steam Locomotives.......1999-07-05

The three DVD's that comprise this collection are available separately, but save your money and buy all three together in this collection. Great footage of classic steam trains (most shot on 16mm film) are assembled with sounds of steam to produce a treat for steam locomotive fans. Great shots of mammoth Big Boys, Norfolk and Western Y and A class articulateds, and even the Goliath Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Yellowstones hauling everything including coal, iron ore and farm implements. DVD transfer quality is pedestrian but clean.

A great adventure for the Railroad fan.......1999-01-29

This video is for everyone who likes the Steam Locomotives of the past. Not every one has had the opportunity to witness these gaints running the rails. The senery and the trains in the vdeo are magnificent. It also gives you an oportunity to see these gaints run the rails and learn how they helped make this nation. The DVD format also gives you spectacular colors and options to view. This video is also a excellent referance for the model railroading hobbist and should be anded to their video collection in either fomat(DVD VHS). There are three videos in this series witch are a must for the railroad enthusiast. Even if you aren't into railroading they should be considerd a must see. Enjoy all three videos and experiance the ride of your lifetime.

In this chapter, we look at classic American steam trains from the 1920s through the 1940s. Journey on such historic railroads as the Central Railroad, the Reading Railroad, the Delaware and Hudson, and the Ontario and Western, exploring the legacy of the golden age of steam.

The Years of Transition, Part 1

We look at steam in the transitional years of the 1950s as we journey on some fourteen different railroads throughout North America, including the Canadian Pacific, Pennsylvania Railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio, and the New York Central.

The Years of Transition, Part 2

This section further examines the great steam trains of America during their years of transition in the 1950s. Included are some of the historic lumber trains of the far west, the iron ore trains of the Messabi Range in Minnesota, Canadian steam in western Canada, and many others.

Twilight of Steam

During the 1960s, steam trains began to disappear from the American landscape, and by the early 1970s they were virtually extinct. In this chapter, we look at the twilight of steam as the history of American steam trains comes to a close.

Description

This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P. Dodge. Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the world's railways in the `60s and early `70s.
Harry Dodge has captured the locomotives of a whole continent: Brazil's Leopoldina Railway, the rope hauled Serra Inclines, British locomotives in Argentina, the Antofagasta and Bolivia Railway, the incredible railways of Southern and Central Peru (one of the seven wonders of the railway world), as well as railway scenes from El Salvador and Mexico.

Fantastic.......2002-10-20

I loved the DVD and so did my husband and kids, sister and 2 cousins. We all learned a lot.

Disappointed.......2000-08-11

Let me start with the down side of this disc. First it is listed as 60 minutes, alas the only way you'll get 60 minutes of viewing out this is to either watch it twice or spend 30 minutes looking for the other 30 minutes.

On the plus side the color was great, and the sound as good as could be expected for 40 to 50 year old material. There was even some footage of Eisenhower viewing his steamer when it came stateside.

What there was of this DVD was OK, but only if you are one who finds most anything on a flanged wheel fascinating.

The bonus material pages are only 1 page of text for each option, and the trivia game has debatable answers.

Don't get me wrong, this DVD set is awesome for railroad fans!!!!
But this DVD set only presents the footages as they are. There is no detailed introduction to each of the locomotives appeared in the DVDs. I think it'll be much more fun if detailed narration is available.
5 stars for the footage.

Excellent Film Footage Of The Twilight Of Steam In The USA.......2001-11-26

I ordered this DVD set primarily for my young son who knows steam trains only through pictures and is passionate about trains in general. I did not expect to like it myself. Imagine my surprise when I found the color film footage (from various amateur but dedicated sources) to be in excellent shape, in good focus, and fascinating to watch. Each disc is a compilation of many different steam locomotives, including those still in regular service during the 1950s and 60s. (In the U.S., steam engines were completely replaced by diesels by about 1962, a process that began in the late 1930s.) Locomotives featured range from Union Pacific "Big Boys", at 1.25 million pounds the largest steam engines ever built, running on the praire in Wyoming, to N&W articulateds in Virginia, to steam fan trips of the 50s and 60s. On the disc titled "Steam Giants Across America," some fantastic modern film footage from the 1990s depicts the last remaining articulated N&W engine running on a fan trip in South Georgia and UP fan trips through the Feather River Canyon using their last two big steam locomotives. I highly recommend this set to anyone who is even mildly interested in the steam era of railroading in America. Each disc contains 40-60 minutes, and is a bargain at the price.
