    Product Description

Having immortalized designer Isaac Mizrahi in his award-winning documentary UNZIPPED, director Douglas Keeve takes another behind-the-scenes look at the intensely competitive world of the fashion industry with SEAMLESS. Like a grittier version of the reality-television series PROJECT RUNWAY, the film follows ten fashion-design hopefuls as they vie for top-prize in a contest created by Vogue magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Focusing equally on the art of fashion design as well as its more cutthroat business demands, Keeve's thought-provoking doc is bolstered by cameos from real-life fashionistas Anna Wintour, Vera Wang, and the irrepressible Mizrahi himself.

The director Michael Lindsay-Hogg has a name that sounds British despite the fact that he is a New Yorker by birth. Maybe that association derives from the fact that he's primarily helmed television films--segments of Brideshead Revisited, for example, as well as a pile of music videos for English bands like the Who and the Rolling Stones. One of his few ventures into feature filmmaking (another was the little-seen Frankie Starlight) is the 1990 film The Object of Beauty, which also looks, sounds, and feels British in sensibility. The film is set in a tony London hotel, the weather is England-dreary, and the clothes (when the actors are wearing them) are tweedish and woolly in appearance. And the story is essentially repressed and internal save for the brash American performances of John Malkovich and Andie MacDowell, who play a couple living way above their limited financial means. When Jake (Malkovich) bottoms out in a business deal, he urges Tina (MacDowell) to sell her little Henry Moore sculpture, an object of great beauty. Such beauty, in fact, that a young mute hotel maid decides to steal it for her own. The actress Rudi Davies, who plays the maid, steals more than the Moore, however. She sneaks the film out from under Malkovich and MacDowell, who was just coming off of her sex, lies, and videotape acclaim, and who is quite good here as well. The Object of Beauty is too subtle in its message--Jake and Tina lose their last monetary chance and in penury begin to discover who they are as people--to let us care about such a pouty pair, and the "hilarious mix-ups and mayhem" that the film promises are, in actuality, tame and trite. --Paula Nechak

1 out of 5 stars "Innocent Beauty" Guilty of Rip-Off.......2004-08-27

This is just a collection of interviews of a few unknown industry "insiders" making comments on what any fan already knows. There are only a few minutes of clips of Britney, nothing new here either. You would expect to find a DVD of this quality in the $3.99 Clearance bin. Save your money for REAL Britney concert and music DVDs, you will see better news stories about her on Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight.

this is a waste of money. It is alot of interviews from a bunch of nobodys that know of britney. No performances and not really any britney. This sucks!

The opening credits here are groovy but misleading: a series of Richard Avedon-like photographs of Catherine Deneuve looking mid-'60s cool (complete with swinging Michel Legrand music). Actually, La Vie de Chateau is set just before D-day, 1944, on a large estate near the landing beaches. The divine Deneuve is a bored wife, whose wealthy husband (the great Philippe Noiret) wants the quiet country life. Arriving on the scene are a dashing Resistance fighter (Henri Garcin), scouting the area, and a German officer--and both swoon over the blond mistress of the chateau. Director Jean-Paul Rappeneau, best known for his Cyrano de Bergerac with Gerard Depardieu, displays a kicky style that might seem inappropriate for the subject, but the film is a complete delight: full of unexpected sight gags and New Wavey spirit. The D-day climax is both uproarious and redemptive. This film needs to be better known outside France. --Robert Horton

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great story easily overcomes technical nuisances .......2005-03-29

The previous reviewer accurately describes the technical viscissitudes of this re-release. In fact, and as I recall the film from the '60s, this DVD is so dark that at times it feels like a completely different work, almost noirish in places. The impression is quite different.

But what a good tale! What moves it right along is that all of the characters are caricatures. In the '60s, the war still horrifyingly fresh in memory, we all knew what our characters were supposed to be like in war flics, so that this show seemed a welcome relief, permitting us some reserved laughter. So, the German commander and the French underground agent offered us a pleasant outlet over a most unpleasant event in recent history.

Ultimately, though, it's the wondrous Catherine Deneuve at lens center who makes the film work, as we see her genius emerging so early in her life. Not to seem gushing, now, but isn't it great that the DVD medium enables us all these many re-releases, permitting us to see anew the tremendous artistic range of her four decades in cinema! All the way from "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" to "Indochine", we receive the bigger picture of what a great actress she is, and how fortunate we are.

So buy this DVD, already. You'll like it!

          4 out of 5 stars A young Deneuve... a very pleasant diversion.......2005-03-29

A romantic comedy that borders on but does not quite turn into farce, this french film made in 1966 starred the still very young Catherine Deneuve, fresh from Polanski's Repulsion and the film that made her internationally famous, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, made just 2 years earlier. Here she plays a bored young housewife married to a French nobleman. Feeling constrained by her "wet rag" of a husband, she is wooed by a heroic resistance leader and a german officer, both encamped in their chateau which just so happens to be chosen as the site for an airborne landing set to take place on the night prior to D-day. Despite the grim setting, this is just a light happy romance, helped along by the languid dreamy score by Michel Legrand which does more than anything else to evoke the flavour of the French countryside. At the end we get to see Catherine Deneuve live out her dreams as she rides with the victorious Americans down the Champs Elysee.

This is the first Black-&-White transfer I've seen from Wellspring and while it doesn't compare to Criterion's pristine restorations of black-&-white films, it is quite good. There is minimal scattered film defects including a shuddering frame or two but otherwise quite serviceable. It is a bit on the dark side with loss of detail in blacker scenes, this is especially evident in the night-time airborne landing at the chateau where for long minutes you are left in near total blackness. The transfer is in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1 (enhanced for widescreen TV). The sound is poor, tinny and doesn't really serve the lovely music at all, which breaks up at higher frequencies. Still, the french dialogue is very clear and natural sounding. This release comes with optional English subtitles.

Maybe not an essential purchase but a very pleasant diversion.

Brand new, factory sealed, fully licensed DVD manufactured in Brazil. NTSC format. Playable on any North American DVD player. High quality full screen color image. Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles do not appear unless turned on and they can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: According to its opening voiceover, Neptune's Daughter is "a story about a guy, a girl, and a bathing suit." Oh, but it's so much more than that. Esther Williams plays Eve, a (surprise!) swimming champion who gives up her amateur status to design and model swimwear. She also plays chaperone to her boy-crazy sister Betty, who is determined to meet Jose (Ricardo Montalban), the captain of the visiting South American polo team--only instead she mistakenly meets amiable masseur Red Skelton, who she thinks is Jose, and meanwhile... well, it's best not to think about the plot. It'll just make your head hurt and it's really not the point, is it? The point is a charming romance between Williams and Montalban; the music, including the Oscar-winning "Baby, It's Cold Outside"; and Xavier Cugat and his orchestra playing the kind of song-and-dance numbers that seem to require a wind machine inside the nightclub. And just when you think the movie is going to end without a hilariously elaborate water ballet number, Esther comes through for you. --Ali Davis"

              Description

The country's oldest beauty contest, MISS AMERICA paints a vivid picture of an institution that has come to reveal much about a changing nation. The pageant is about commercialism and sexual politics, about big business and small towns. But beyond the symbolism lies a human story--at once moving, inspiring, infuriating, and poignant, complete with intimate interviews with former contestants and fabulous behind-the-scenes footage.

              1 out of 5 stars don't buy.......2007-03-17

Highly cheap and unprofessional. You will not see Vancouver island here. All you will see if you buy this DVD is a bunch of wanna be "explorers" fooling around. They show you everything possible but Vancouver island. After fooling around for about 40 min +, they tell you how beautiful Vancouver island is. This DVD is not worth to watch it for free. Watch only if somebody pays YOU $20 instead of you paying this price for this. I want to repeat: YOU WILL NOT SEE VANCOUVER ISLAND ON THIS DVD.
