This is the TV movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, shortly before he made The Sugarland Express. Working from a script by Richard Matheson, the film stars Dennis Weaver as a mild-mannered traveling salesman who unintentionally angers the driver of a semi truck. Suddenly, the truck is not only riding his tail but trying to run him off the road. No matter what he does (pulling over, stopping at a diner, calling the cops), he can't get rid of it. Spielberg makes the wise decision of never showing the driver, even as he cranks the voltage on the film's suspense elements. As a result, the truck itself takes on an air of satanic menace--even a personality of sorts--as it seems to hunt its human prey. Spielberg made a lot out of a little, suggesting just how skilled a storyteller he would become. --Marshall Fine

Spielberg's first full length film was for television, but never mind-it's still a grabber. Absent his later big Hollywood budgets, the director's special knack for building tension is still evident, resulting in a spare, ingenious thriller. Weaver is excellent as the rattled David. For God's sake, Dave- stay off the road!

So here's an irony: Thirty-five years on, the movie audience which Spielberg's later work helped to capture - multiplex consumers of overblown CGI, gross-out, slapstick, and ever-greater explosions - may not "get" this one at all (e.g. see some of its other reviewers here). For anybody else - and this is most certainly not "art-house" either, don't be put off - here's an astounding, must-see thriller. OK, so it's a wannabe western, or Hitchcock (or Beowulf, or Alien, or High Noon) on wheels: None of that detracts from its great premise, which is delivered utterly without frills.

So many reasons to see this:

Spielberg is SO good at doing minimal (seriously, Steve, about time to get back to some of that?): Pared-down music, only natural-sound detail; no human baddie, just a perfectly cast truck as the anthropomorphised "killer". Even the shattering finale is captured on ordinary live film, albeit in one of the most awe-inspiring shots ever taken.

Great raw material: OK, so of course the script dates just a bit, with what dialogue there is sounding TV-ish and a wee bit cheesy to the modern ear; and kids now seeing this film might snigger at the personal styling details and plot's obvious reliance on predating mobile phones; but hey... We're right there for Mann (Dennis Weaver) from the very start, as it's vital that we have to be, because his story is so discreetly and elegantly constructed.

And as a piece of performance: Not just by Weaver, who's entirely credible as the put-upon everyman reluctantly forced to find his inner warrior. The film works because it sustains a gut-wrenching kinetic energy that few others ever reach (woeful comparison with, for example, the new Pirates III, which for all its frantic rushing about, quite fails to draw its audience into the action). DUEL is all the more impressive because the whole movie is shot "for real" - perhaps partly because the frantic pace of its actual production (see below) seems to rub off onto the screen. That it works at all is largely because it's propelled by uncannily perfect pacing of the long road sequences, which (as Spielberg acknowledges) only happens when you perfectly combine the ingredients: obsessive planning of sequences; unobtrusively brilliant stunt driving; then-new moving camera techniques (including a contribution from Bullitt's road unit); and laser-sharp editing. That's not to overlook the out-of-car scenes, which have a gloriously welcome fingernails-down-the-blackboard inner screech of Hitchcockian suspense - best of all in the diner scene ("which one is him?"), complete with some hilariously dark 'red herring' moments; the snake farm; and the old couple who (with pitch-perfect Buchan / Hitchock irony) mistake Mann for an attacker.

Visuals: It's clear from the first frame that, as Fats Waller put it, "the gods are in the house". Details are pin-sharp, not just as to focal clarity, but in their layering up the metaphorical landscape of the story, with every single shot both perfectly framed and constantly informing character and/or building pace; and that's a lot of shots, often complex and kinetic ones. And all set in a serenely beautiful landscape, mocking the petty anxieties and feuds of the men and machines scuttling across it. All the more surprising therefore to find in the bonus material that DUEL was made in less than a month: just 13 days' shooting, including the 3 days of (ultimately unused) "spare plate" shots insisted on by the studio.

This DVD edition is deeply satisfying both for the transfer quality of the movie itself and for a joyous Spielberg interview. Refreshingly modest and candid, the director reveals his debt to a quick-witted PA, to his production team and actors, and how great achievement springs from being young and hungry. It's amusing by-the-by to see Spielberg look back on this period of coming to terms with the public impact of his own virtuosity, coming to realise how a seemingly minor movie shot in 13 days can outgrow its origins to signal his big breakthrough. (Among all the fascinating stuff about how to get a 50-mph lorry to go at 100 mph, he also, touchingly, points out a couple of minor rookie mistakes you might not otherwise have noticed.) Musing on the cultural impact that his astonishing debut piece had, stumbling upon a global audience, he notes that what started as simply a domestic "TV ratings Titanic" became, internationally, a bigger but quite different phenomenon: "Here I was making a roadkill tribute to High Noon and Hitchcock, then the Europeans were reading in all this esoteric abstract symbolism about class warfare in America". It also, so he says, earned him the instant and lasting respect of Fellini (cue archive photo to prove this!).

Hey look, this film is basically an hour of a geeky guy in a little red car being chased up and down the mountain by one helluva scary truck. You can find much more if you want to look for it - Dostoevsky stuff about man and machines, or the 20th century post-feminist crisis of male identity, or the jurisprudential question of whether we need to be able to attribute a motive to evildoing, etc - but, for me, what nails the simple greatness of this piece is that WE ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS in the end. On that level alone, it won't disappoint.

Spielberg's DUEL is one of the best Hitchcock movies that Hitchcock did not actually make. And the best thing about it is that Spielberg doesn't overindulge in that massive pile-up of Hitchcock references that Brian DePalma employs - often to the point of parody. A great movie, affordably priced on DVD, and a wonderful warm-up for JAWS. Just when you thought it was safe to drive on the highway. . .

I was 14 yrs old in 1971, when this movie showed on TV. And when I brought my 1st DVD player I search Amazon to see if they had the "Duel" (the 1st movie Director Steven Spielberg created. Amazon had this movie-I couldnt believe!! Its a movie about road rage! which weird in itself-since thats what is happening now! in 2007(yr). its about a 18 big rig wheeler truck thats, for some really strange reason, trys to kill this man that driving along the california interstate (to see a business client) 200 miles away from his home. Its suspense-bcause you never see whose trying the 18 big rig wheeler truck!!!

"Simisola," an unvarnished slant on race relations and immigration in England, is a 108,000-word, 120-character police procedural with a novelette-sized core. Serious readers are forced into constant back-referencing to keep tabs on this multitude. But forget the book. Adapted to film by Alan Plater, directed by Jim Goddard, with "dubbing editors" and a film editor, the DVD production staff deserves lots of credit, the adaptation surpassing the novel: Tens-of-thousands of words involving Inspector Rexford's family life and all but 35 credited characters and related irrelevancies are trimmed away to produce the lean 103-minute 1996 TV production whose quality and style is comparable to an average Midsomer Murders TV episode.

If it weren't for Rendell's annoying MO (both in Road Rage and Simisola) of not saying something in 100 words if 300 will do, this reviewer might recommend reading Road Rage in lieu of the 1998 197-minute TV adaptation, the 110,000-word novel being far more cohesive and substantive than Simisola. Yet another police procedural, Road Rage deals with the kidnapping of hostages by a group opposing the environmental and other havoc threatened by a new bypass road. Adapted by George Baker (who also plays Inspector Wexford!), and directed by Bruce MacDonald, much of the book's excess verbiage was trimmed and the cast whittled down to 34 credited characters. Though the essence of the novel is preserved, it's too bad the producers didn't fall back on the proven Plater/Goddard team for the adaptation.

To illustrate: The novel's kidnap holding cell window (boxed-in to obstruct the view and high up on a side-wall) was changed to an open ceiling vent with a clear skyward view, gutting an intriguing clue in the process. Dora accusing her husband of breaking a promise when she learns of a certain event is silly. The role of Andrew Struther and interactions with his parents was changed for no good reason. There are others.

Picture, sound quality (thanks to re-dubbing) and lack of excessive accents (for American audiences, except for a few lesser players) is adequate. The DVD keep-case has an inner leaf, each film having its own DVD.

Road Rage.......2007-02-14

This is part of the Ruth Rendell Inspector Wexford series and as with all Inspector Wexford stories this held me in suspense all through the program. Acting is brilliant, George Baker is marvelous as Wexford as usual. The English scenery is good and Ruth Rendell throws in plenty of red herrings to keep the viewer on the edge of the seat.

Movie that u want to watch till end and don't get bored. Black slang talk really makes u laugh. Would like that movie would be little longer when all things leave half way. Music rocks behind and makes u feel happy.

In this movie it was fun seeing a bunch of people driving to Miami to do a music video.

GET OFF THE BUS.......2005-08-16

Ride is a road comedy that you don't want to take a trip to the video store for. Without a solid script or director this Ride turns into a bus wreck on film. The story is so full of plotholes you'll want to get off this bus before the first twenty minutes of the film.
An aspiring music director (Melissa De Sousa) desperate for a break makes a deal with her greasy boss (Downtown Julie Brown) to bus down a star's (Luther Campbell) talent to Florida for a music video. The group of "entertainers" is a bunch of standard road comedy misfits all rewritten to fit music stereotypes. The female singing duo, the sexy babe, the hard-core thug, the white rapper, and his bickering black partner, and the smooth operator crooner who's actually a misogynist. Sadly the actors are less talented than the one-dimensional characters they play. Keeping these no-talents in line during the trip is Pop (Malik Yoba in desperate need of a paycheck) Luke's best friend. Cedric the Entertainer and John Witherspoon are the drivers of the Jalop Charter bus they all get on for the "Ride." The beat up bus is actually in better shape than you will be in after you watch the movie. Make sure to have some alka seltzers or some Tums on hand before you pop this DVD in. You're going to need them soon after the ten-minute mark.
As they make the long journey from the ghetto of Harlem to Florida, we watch as several poorly written stories start to unfold. Because the characters are so one-dimensional, I didn't get to know anyone or how this experience changed them in any way. Instead of developing the characters, the screenplay uses very bad jokes to cover up its total lack of story. These gags are so bad I got motion sickness when they started the "Ride". I needed a couple of barf bags just to finish the movie. From stupid gags about the ethnicity of a white rapper, to a running gag about a two bumbling robbers (Lady of rage Guy in a down jacket while everyone else wore summer clothes) chasing down a thug for some bodega loot they stole, this movie just made me more nauseous on its long tedious journey to Florida. Laid back West coast cool Snoop Dogg as a southern hick? There's a ???moment if there ever was one. Hillbilly gags, gags about carjacking, all go nowhere. The most vomitrotious moment is when Pop asks Luther Campbell to fund a manhood program. What??? Luther Campbell playing, a hard core-misogynist, in this movie (not a stretch) is going to fund a manhood program to promote responsible behavior and good values among men. An MST3K moment if there ever was one.
You know a movie is bad when the actors' faces express frustration in the performances. Melissa De Sousa and Malik Yoba look like they are in pain for most of this movie. They struggle through the script looking for a bright spot to display their talents in but find none. Downtown Julie Brown looks so annoyed that she wants to choke someone. Cedric The Entertainer and John Witherspoon are just phoning it in here. Thankfully both have done better work in other movies(Boomerang, Hollywood Shuffle and Barbershop.) Ferdo Starr is his grating Q character from Moesha and Luther Campbell is well Luke.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this "Ride." Get on the next bus please.

I thought the movie would be really fun to watch I mean CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER & BERNIE MAC and on top of that FREDRO STARR & MALIK YOBA.
All the people I mention did great work, but the movie it self weren't that well-written and couldv'e been much better however it was a pretty funny movie.
I bought the European Version and missed out on the 4 musicvideos that are as a bonus in the american edition and that pissed me off a little.

The soundtrack is better than the movie, but the movie is still o.k. if u don't pay too much for it.

First, the entire DVD IS censored with swearing bleeped out and gore that was blurred. About half of the chases show you the beginning, then the end without showing the action that happened in between.
I gave this DVD one star because of two scenes on the DVD. One where the pick-up is hit by a semi-truck, and second for the guy blowing his head off. Cops on television is much more entertaining than this DVD.

Well, there are not so many DVDs out there showing these hot police chases. This is why I wanted to try this one.
Well, don't be fooled by the title. This video IS censored. Not by some Parental Association, but by the producers themselves.
Language is like the usuall "You son of a -beeeeeep- "! And there is a scene where a poor fellow kills himself which is blurred. But honestly, on that footage, the most shocking is not the gunshot to his head, but the reaction of the police who stood at a safe 150 feet away with guns ready and watched the guy get out of the car with his shotgun, open the trunk, load the shotgun and then shoot himself...
Also the comments on each videos are not good quality: "let's watch this part again" Sometimes, they start a pursuit and then jump straight to the end when the car is already on the roof.
And where is that tank they show in the preview?

In the film adaptation of the Ruth Rendell novel "Road Rage" hordes of protestors descend on the town of Kingsmarkham to stop the construction of a planned bypass. It's a delicate situation. Detective Chief Inspector Wexford (George Baker) feels that his department is undermanned and that he needs extra forces in the likely event of violence taking place. There's pressure from the Home Office to construct the bypass with little media attention, and meanwhile 100s of protestors are living in tree-dwellings daring construction workers to continue chopping down trees. If this isn't bad enough, the body of a young German tourist is found in the forest near Kingsmarkham. There's a murder to solve, a riot to contain, and a bypass to build.

"Road Rage" is 197 minutes long, divided into three chapters, and it contains an impressive cast of characters. On the police side of things, there's Chief Inspector Wexford and his pleasant wife, Dora (Louie Ramsay) who both share certain sympathy with the protestors. Detective Inspector Mike Burden (Christopher Ravenscroft) is never as tolerant as Wexford, and he has little patience for the protestors' cause. There's also DS Daman Slesar (James Allen) who has a long history of working deep undercover, and friend DS Malahyde (Isobel Middleton).

Wexford's investigation of the murder of the German tourist is complicated by the threat of eco-terrorism. The film explores how a righteous cause becomes clouded with violence when a militant eco-terrorist group called "The Sacred Globe" emerges on the scene in Kingsmarkham. With surprisingly sophisticated treatment, the story illustrates the dangers of believing that violence is justified in order to further an actvist movement. The father of the murdered German tourist has as much grief and as many unanswered questions as those who survive an eco-terrorist event. The film asks is there really any difference between these situations? Violent crimes--whether brutally random or those engineered to herald social change--always result in victims. In contrast, the film's portrayal of the upper-class involvement in the eco-terrorist movement was disappointingly naive, and heavy-handed. Nonetheless, in spite of this one criticism, "Road Rage" is great entertainment, and Rendell fans should be delighted by another riveting Inspector Wexford mystery--displacedhuman.

Heart of the Country.......2005-01-24

I was surprised to see this particular set finally end up on American shelves only because it has not appeared much sooner. The BBC has found a ready market for the regional detective mysteries as evidenced by the Hettie Wainthrops (Yorks/Lancs) and the Midsommer Murders (Oxon/Bucks) and here we are with murder mysteries from the West Country. You would think that there were more murders than in Cabot Cove.

Road Rage has as it's seeming main concern the environmental opposition to a new motorway coming from the hippie-like travellers, who, as any visitor to Britain will know are the bane of the Western side of the Cotswolds with their illegal campsites, begging etc etc.

Inspector Wexford is a genial man with a disarmingly charming wife and a colleague who has a degree of impatience matched by his university education.

This plot is interwoven with mysterious disappearances and other nefarious activities which appear to be linked to a local minicab company.

In this lengthy set, the twists and turns are juxtaposed with the demands of extended family life as Wexford's dughter is about to give birth and does so as the centre of the drama unfolds.

As we follow the developments the human, erring side of the detective unfolds in sharp relief to the realtively inhuman objective side of Mike, his subordinate.

Once again a vehicle for the generous shots of the beautiful English countryside, this show, while rather sentimental and nostalgic somewhat reminiscent of Premier John Major's pechant for warm beer and cricket, demonstartes a preference for the past where good policing wins the day against well defined bad guys without any of the trappings of urban violence and tribal activity.

My only reservation is the willingness of the American audience to put up with the thicker dialects spoken so much on this show. It seems to me that this would be a significant drawback to the general acceptance of this show on US soil.

Having lived in and around this area I have a weakness for this particular show and would welcome more episodes on DVD. While the US has been very quick to mine the vaults of television shows and get the DVDs out while making this one of the fastest growing retail DVD market segments in America, the British have been backwards in coming forwards in this area.

Which reminds me when are we going to see Bergerac and the Equalizer?

This was an excellent movie. While it was long, itwas broken into 3 segments. This was the first movie of its kind that I've seen. Good story line, kept you guessing right up to the end.
