Description

H.G. Wells' fantastic account of life on the moon is vividly brought to the screen by special effects master Ray Harryhausen in this amazing sci-fi epic featuring unforgettable extra-terrestrial creatures. The film begins with a team of United Nations astronauts planning an upcoming moon mission. The astronauts are both confused and intrigued by a man (Judd) who claims he, his fiancee and a scientist journeyed to the moon 65 years ago and were attacked by "Selenites," grotesque, human-like ant forms that live in immense crystal caverns. Now it is up to the U.N. team to attempt a lunar landing that could be more horrifying than ever believed possible.

5 out of 5 stars 40 year old, ready to watch some old movies from my childhood.......2007-05-15

I saw this movie when I was 7 years old.

I just recently got on a kick to watch some of my old favorite Sci-Fi films.

This movie is great, because it has all the charm of the 50's and 60's sci-fi films, but unlike most....this one has a story worthy of HG Wells or Disney. So you get the best of both worlds.

When you add Ray Harryhousing's stop motion special effects...you have this movie hitting every element of what good classic Sci-Fi should be!

4 out of 5 stars fun adventure.......2007-05-08

I sure found it interesting to see an alternative history of what space travel in the past could have been like. In general, it made for a very fun and interesting movie. The characters were humorous and the special effects were great. For the lover of classic sci-fi and adventure, this one is a must-see.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dated.......2007-03-12

Although there is some merit in this film it cannot be considered a classic sci-fi film- it would take away from the real value of he true sci-fi ones. The plot is about the very first expedition to the Moon around the turn of the 20th century. Some of the scenes are a bit comical- but that is not entirely a bad thing as it lightens the film and makes it more enjoyble for kids to watch. It is a bit dated but one should also consider the time that it was produced.
All in all a good family film that your kids will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC AND COOL MOVIE!!!.......2007-03-11

This movie is awesome!!! Not only is it awesome, but the Selenites are cool. :) It has an excellent plot and animation (by Ray Harryhausen) and the scenes are cool. The Selenites are really cool. This is a must-have for all sci-fi fans! Even though it came out in 1964, I still watch it! This is an excellent made movie and I strongly reccomend it! :D

4 out of 5 stars Classic Sci-Fi fun.......2007-01-16

I watched this movie years ago and was pleased when it finally came out on DVD. I'm a huge fan of Ray Harryhausen, the master of stop action filmaking, and this is one of his best. Grab a bowl of popcorn and enjoy the first Earthlings to visit the Moon.

1999 may be remembered as the year of Joan of Arc: NBC created a miniseries in her honor, Carl Dreyer's long-lost The Passion of Joan of Arc was discovered in a mental hospital, and Facets re-released Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid. Luc Besson rounds out the corpus with his stylistic and vaguely heretical grand-scale feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element) challenges established notions about the Maid of Orleans as he creates a decidedly more human heroine than have previous biopics. The story line is the same--a young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy--but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister's giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

Cinematically, The Messenger is stunning, with fantastical sequences of Joan in communication with higher powers. Yet the graphic violence (scenes include random decapitation and a dog gnawing on a body); the uneven accents, which make it difficult to tell who is fighting on which side; and the rewriting of lore may make this version of Joan of Arc appeal only to Besson fans. Jovovich is convincing, and while at times the film may drag (at times you wish they'd hurry up and burn her), it is a remarkable and insightful retelling of a well-known piece of history. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Religous Based Thriller - Demonstrating Fear of Church.......2007-06-22

I found this movie EXCELLENT! I cannot comment on the historical religious facts - however, I was moved by Joan of Arc's passion to pursue her vision(s) from God to reclaim the Kings crown to France (From England).

Throughout her life, Joan of Arc was haunted by "visions from God" that lead her to believe that she had the religious power to force Englands Army to surrender territory in France rather than face the rath of God. Mila Jovovich does a spectacular job at playing an unbelievable role of a young lady leading a powerful army.

Dustin Hoffman is introduced as her conscience in the later half of the movie - and is haunting! In addition, I believe that this movie does a great job at demonstrating how religion was "Feared" during this period of history!

Strongly recommended as a very entertaining movie.

5 out of 5 stars History Coming to Life.......2007-05-19

For those who love history coming to life, this is the film for them. Milla Jovovich is fabulous in this role and portrays the passion and zeal of a true believer in the Middle Ages. The costumes and the props are superb and the battle scenes are so realistic that you feel that you are participating in real history in progress.

My favourite film of all times.

5 out of 5 stars very satisfied.......2007-03-31

Showed up sooner than expected and very satisfied would recomend for any one to purchase from this individual

3 out of 5 stars A medieval peplum film.......2006-11-22

This is not the best film by Besson. In fact it is in many ways incredibly naive and superficial, even in its desire to look and sound profound. Profundity is not only political gibberish diplomatic slang. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of the French king to be and then king to opportunism. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of bishop Cochon to servile non-commitment. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of the English to vengeful cruelty. It is also very superficial to reduce simple people to blind believers of anything that sounds iffy, godlike and slightly insane, like a girl leading an army or hearing and listening to divine voices. But all that must please many simple minds indeed. It is a shame because the subject deserves a serious film, a serious approach. Shakespeare forgot to write this play. He could have written a masterpiece on the subject. Besson just writes an average action film, some kind of medieval peplum film.

1 out of 5 stars This film should be sent to the stake!.......2006-11-22

As a St. Jeanne d'Arc devotee, I have read quite a bit on my favorite Saint, as well as seen my share of movies. Some were well done, none have been definitive, and others are, well, like this one. I usually try to be a bit more intelligent, but the first word that comes to mind when I think of this particular version is CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Historically innacurate, spiritually unfaithful, this film stinks. It is downright heretical, portraying our beloved Jeanne as having made a pact with the devil. She is shown as a proud, haughty girl at odds with her Church. What a bunch of bull. The ONLY two bits of this film I appreciated were the attention given to her ring (given her by her brother), as well as the scene when she brings a child back to life (I am unaware of any other films on her that portray this true story). Other than these, it took a lot not to walk out of the theatre when I went to see it. In other words, BLAHHHHHHHH! Don't waste your time, money, or soul on such non-sense.

3 out of 5 stars Too much creative license.......2007-03-20

I had a hard time with this video because of the amount of "creative license". When using a video to teach a Bible story, I like it to be as accurate as possible. I would have a hard time using this video for this purpose, as children who don't know the Bible wouldn't know what was from the Bible and what was someone else's idea of what might have happened. It might be useful for older children where you could talk about the differences between the video and what is actually in the Bible, or perhaps you could use clips during a lesson about Jonah, but I would not recommend showing it as is to children without making it clear that a lot of what is in the video is from someone's imagination, and not from the Bible itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Video!.......2007-02-15

This video was the first one I watched in the series. I have all 13 and I have only watched this one and the Garden of Eden. Jonah and the Whale seemed to be very well thought out. It did add a storyline that was not mentioned in the bible, but it didn't step out of its bounds and did not contradict scripture. It looked like they really searched this out historically to make it better. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to watch the rest of the series.

One thing you will notice about this video is that (unlike most children's bible videos) it is not corny and doesn't make the characters out to be silly goofballs. I feel this is very important. Your children need to be able to relate to these characters as real life examples to follow. This video did an excellent job at it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Heroes and Legend of the Bible.......2007-01-08

The dvd's were of excellent clarity. The children could not put them down. Charlton Heston still captivates young and old audiances throughout the world. It is a good investment for your family. It fars outwiegh the stench society is now offering on the television for kids to view.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars A book in common.......2005-10-11

Many books contain many truths. The Bible is shared by many different kinds of people, including me.

It's dismaying to see insistence on solitary truths and literalism. But hey, that's just me.

Fundamentalism is ugly and divisive whether it comes from the Middle East or from Cincinnatti.

See the movie and decide for yourself, gang.

1 out of 5 stars Should be Jonah and the FISH.......2003-12-25

I have not viewed this movie and probably won't because of its title. ...God provided a huge FISH not a whale to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17, 2:1) in order to save his life... thus having mercy upon him... Unfortunately, it has often been misunderstood to be a whale. I know it is a children's movie, yet that is not a reason to stray from God's Word. ...The VeggieTales movie about Jonah is more accurate and is awesome! Even the ending of the veggietales movie is accurate to the Word, in that Jonah never really understood that God has mercy upon anyone who repents, turns away from sin, and truly seeks His will. The story of Jonah is often taught as a story of obedience, which it is. Yet it is also a story of God's MERCY. The veggietales movie teaches that in a captivating (and entertaining) way. My toddlers give JONAH A VEGGIE TALES MOVIE two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Emphasis on lifestyle, not job or racing.......2006-03-27

This DVD was given to me by someone who thought that, after reading my review of the wonderful film, "Breaking Away," I would like "Red Light Go," a documentary on the bicycle messengers of New York City and the "alleycat" races they run. "Red Light Go" turned out to be a documentary on a topic that is of little interest to me, but I will review it and stick to commenting on its quality.

The documentary introduces a set of alleycat racers, and then rotates through interviews with them, as they comment on their lives, how they got into their current lifestyle, what they think of each other, a little about the bicycle messenger job, and a lot about the "alleycat" races. These races are semi-structured, grueling, urban bicycle races, arranged by some of the participants.

As to the quality of the DVD, first of all, the cinematography is great. The viewer feels like he or she is right there with these alleycat racers, during the races, during their "day jobs" as messengers, and during their social gatherings.

Secondly, the title and the cover image give a very accurate impression of what the documentary is about. At first, I was expecting it to be about bicycle messengers in general. Through the different interviews, it becomes clear to me that the "alleycat racers" are a subset of bicycle messengers, who have developed their own subculture or counter-culture. What sets them apart are some of the same factors that set apart the participants in any "extreme" variation of any sport: pushing the limits, taking risks, and enjoying the thrill of the danger involved. Many of them also dress in ways that clearly identify them as extreme, non-conformist, and counter-culturists.

Thirdly, there is a fair amount of profanity mixed into the interviews, as well as quite a few references to substance abuse. One of the "alleycat" races even involves the participants carrying bags of items that look like illegal drugs, adding the possibility that the police might stop them and they would run the risk of having to explain their way out of drug charges. That is just considered as one more obstacle in the race.

Fourthly, this documentary is much more about the alleycat racers than about the alleycat races. The big Halloween race, following a pentagram-in-a-circle-shaped route through rush-hour traffic in New York City, is shown in pretty good detail, although the traffic and the twindling daylight make it hard to follow the action. Otherwise, the documentary is mainly about the racers and their lives.

Fifthly, even at my height of bicycling involvement, I would not have wanted to be involved in these alleycat races, as the documentary makes two things clear: there is little regard for the safety of the pedestrians and automobile drivers; winning the races has as much to do with being loud and pushy at the checkpoints, as it does with being fast. I loved to ride because I loved the speed and the accomplishment involved in going new places and exploring.

If you are looking for a DVD about bicycle racing, check out "Breaking Away." If you want to learn about what it would be like to be a bicycle messenger in a big city, look elsewhere. But, if you want to find out about the counter-culture that exists among the bicycle messengers who are also alleycat racers, "Red Light Go" is exactly what you're looking for. I learned a lot about this group and the counter-culture they have developed, and the documentary is well-done technically.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well executed documentary!.......2005-11-08

This documentary is a good example of how to assemble a documentary professionally, and use editing to bring the narrative to a thrilling and entertaiing finish. Errol Morris is be the master documentary maker of our time, but anyone who makes them has to figure out a way to bring the narrative to a close, rahter than leave it hanging. This is the most entertaining documentary I've seen this year. It focuses on bike messengers in NYC and the allycat races they put on throughout each year. It is a detailed look into their culture, and gives them a face and identity. Messengers take risks and sometimes have injured pedestrians. This documentary does not try to apologize for that. It is a chance for the messengers to tell their stories and express themselves, and tell the audience how they want to be accepted and appreciated. I actually see them in a whole new light thanks to this DVD. And the final act explaining the annual Haloween race, and the legendary messenger/daredevil Evil E, is thrilling and provides the perfect finale for this film. Shot and edited over 3 years, Red Light Go is a worthy addition to any documentary collection. It is unrated, but does contain mild profanity. But teenagers and adults alike who are either into extreme sports or curious about the lives of messengers should see this.

5 out of 5 stars Courier Rat Races.......2005-09-20

Red Light Go! is the engaging tale of cycle couriers in New York and how they organise alley cat races. Alley cat races are cycle races across an urban environment. It focuses on the riders rather than the action and is all the better for it.

One of the best documentaries I've seen in years, well made and with a real empathy for its subject.

It did make me want to buy a fixie (fixed wheel bike) so beware

5 out of 5 stars Exceedinly well done independant documentary..........2005-06-07

Big cities have a vibe. Sometimes the vibe is the people and sometimes it's the inanimate feeling of its buildings, streets and parks. NYC is both. Red Light Go captures a microcosm of NYC by profiling the people who move envelopes and packages from one side of the city to the other on a bicycle. Bicycle messengers have a mystique unlike any other. They are admired by some and reviled by others. Red Light Go captures this beautifully. In up close and personal interviews with several messengers we learn what makes them tick and how they feel about the challenges they face day to day. It also captures their love of a transportation option for many of us: the bicycle. Yac, Mike Dee, Amy and Squid live their life exactly the way they want, in their city and on their terms. Even if you aren't a bicycle fanatic you will like this movie. Picture a bicycle race on the streets of NYC at evening rush hour with messengers having to ride back and forth across the city six times competing to be first on streets filled with traffic. This is one of several messenger races captured in Red Light Go. It also captures the simplicity of what many of us do five days a week. Work. This independent documentary shares the spirit of NYC and some of the unique people who give it life. Well done with crisp editing. Who needs special effects. Just watch a messenger ride between a transit bus and taxi with inches to spare. I've watched this several times already and have shared with many others. It's that good.

IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT MENACING FACE COME TO DVD, HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET BORDERLINE AND THE STONE KILLER ON DVD, THEN I WILL BE HAPPY.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent sampling of Bronson's Cannon era........2004-03-28

During his winter years in the 80s, international action star Charles Bronson made movie after movie for the maligned Cannon Group Inc, the production company run by Menachem Golan and Yoram Globus. Cannon got its start making (and did quite well with) exploitation pictures and just about every one of Bronson's films for them has the flavor of grindhouse exploitation cinema in the mix. But that does not mean the movies are plain bad, or so bad they're good, far from it. While Bronson did make some clunkers (Death Wish 2 in my opinion) and a few cult classics perfect for the MST3K treatment (Death Wish 3), some of his Cannon pictures are quite good. The quite good ones were usually directed by J. Lee Thompson. This box set gathers together the Bronson/Thompson team ups, with the exception of Death Wish 4: The Crackdown. All feature widescreen anamorphic transfers, again with the exception of the not included Death Wish 4: The Crackdown. Each movie is a solid piece of entertainment where Bronson did not simply phone in an embarrassed and wooden performance. Odd trivia: the cover of the box set uses an image for Death Wish 4, did I mention it's not inlucded in this set?

10 TO MIDNIGHT (1984): Was the first thriller Thompson and Bronson worked on for Cannon (the two had previously teamed on The Evil That Men Do and, I believe, The White Buffalo) and its one of the best. Bronson plays a cop (a standard role for him when he wasn't replaying Paul Kersey in Death Wish sequel after Death Wish sequel) who matches wits with a cunning serial killer. Gene Davis plays the killer with a bemused and arrogant indifference that might appear wooden, until his mask of control slips. Andrew Stevens is Bronson's book smart partner and the lovely Lisa Eilbacher plays Bronson's estranged daughter (obviously she got her looks from her mother). Bronson grows desperate when his emotional investigation puts his daughter at risk. The characters and mind games are well set up in the script, but it degenerates into a slasher movie in the final reel. Nonetheless, it's a solidly crafted thriller.

MURPHY'S LAW (1986): Bronson is a cop (again) who is dealing with his wife's leaving him by hiding in a bottle of booze. When he is framed for her murder, he escapes (with foul mouthed girl-woman Kathleen Wilhoite shackled to his wrist) to find the real killer. Gail Morgan Hickman's script (she also wrote Death Wish 4: The Crackdown and the story for the third Dirty Harry movie, The Enforcer) won't win any awards, but the story places enough obstacles in Bronson and Wilhoite's path to keep the yarn from getting boring.

MESSENGER OF DEATH (1988): This is a real change of pace for Bronson. He plays an investigative reporter trying to get to the bottom of a mass murder that, at first, seems to be result of a venom filled blood feud between two fundalmentalist Mormon brothers. The mystery gets the emphasis over the action (though there is enough of that to keep it from getting boring) and only a rushed conclusion keeps it from being more than a tad above average.

KINJITE: FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS (1989): This was last movie from the Bronson/Thompson/Cannon team and it's the weakest. Bronson is a vice cop slowly cracking from the pressures of dealing with the sleaze soaked Job. His obsessive hunt for a particular pimp named Duke is hampered by things like due process and his teenaged daughter getting groped in a crowded bus. What he does not know is that the father of the child kidnapped by Duke is the same man who felt his daughter up on the bus! The unpleasant subject matter (molestation and child prostitution) just isn't mixed well with the standard plot. It isn't there to make commentary about the characters, it's there to either titilate or shock. The script needed a little more work ironing out those story problems to really cook.

Any fan of Bronson or Cannon or both (they're out there, I should know, I am one of them) will want this collection, as it pretty much puts the best of Bronson's Cannon years in one box. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD. Go Get them !.......2003-02-28

All 4 films are directed by J. Lee Thompson. All films won't win any awards for any categories but all 4 are fun films especially for Bronson fans.

10 to Midnight from 1983 : Bronson tracks serial killer (co-stars Andrew Stevens)

Murphy's Law: Bronson is up against corrupt police force

Messenger of death: Bronson as Denver reporter up against nasty developer

Kinjite: Bronson Vs. child prostitution ring

All 4 are in wide screen anamorphic which has good picture. The sound quality is so-so (10 to midnight and Murphy's law are mono) but overall this is one box set to get for Bronson fans. Highly recommended and hopefully someone will be releasing Death Wish 2, 3, and 4.

5 out of 5 stars Return of the vigilante senior citizen..........2003-01-31

At long last, Charles Bronson comes to DVD. Forget the people that tell you his best movies are 'The Magnificent Seven', 'The Great Escape', or even 'Death Wish'. For me, and countless other film-literate fans, his J Lee Thompson 80's output is the best.

This box set features:

Murphy's Law: Bronson teams up with a young female hoodlum to stop a maniac, the mafia, AND corrupt cops. Guess who wins...

10 to Midnight: Bronson manages to deliver justice to a serial killer who likes 80's soft-rock.

Messenger of Death: Bronson plays a reporter who teaches a lesson to greedy child-murdering land-developers.

Kinjite, Forbidden Subjects: Charlie displays his love for everything Japanese, in this bittersweet tale of a father's love, cultural exchange, and (surprise) vigilante justice.

All in all, a classic load of Bronson-style brutality, all delivered in pristine anamorphic widescreen, with original trailers, and trendy new artwork. Don't expect realism, just expect 100% old-age action. Classic stuff!!!

The tender, tragic saga of Jason Vorhees, the world's unhappiest camper, continues when yet another batch of hormonally advanced teens decide to ignore past history and spend some time at the woodsy, pine-scented slaughterhouse known as Camp Crystal Lake. It may be a bit of a stretch to describe any of the entries in this interminable series as "good," but this creatively grotesque installment manages to come surprisingly close with a welcome sense of humor and some quick glimmers of real menace (courtesy of director Steve Miner, who would later go on to helm the far more accomplished Halloween: H20). Originally presented in 3-D, which explains the never-ending slew of objects (knives, pitchforks, yo-yos, cats, eyeballs, etc.) that are repeatedly thrust in the viewer's general direction. --Andrew Wright

3 out of 5 stars Where Is The 3-D DVD?.......2007-05-31

This movie was shot in 3-D and unless you saw it at the theatre you missed the 3-D part which is a shame because it looks to be the most frightening and terrifying 3-D film ever made. If "Spy Kids 3-D" can be released on dvd in 3-D then why can't all the others, especially when the 3-D gimmick is integral to the presentation of the film..
Anyway, I saw this as a kid for the first time after having my babysitter tell me how the whole movie went. It scared me intensely. It still has the prettiest "Friday The 13th" survivor to date. Plus this is the first film in which Jason wears the hockey mask. I think "Part 3" as well as "Jason X" are the best in the series for doing something different("Part 3" 3-D and "Part 10" Space). You can't truthfully say if you've never seen this before, and you sit down to watch it alone with the lights off, that it didn't scare you. So, for succeeding to do, what horror films today can't seem to do, scare me, I definately consider this film a good shocker.Just hope to see the 3-D dvd sometime soon, are you listening Paramount Home Video? Hello? HeLLO!? I didn't think so.

5 out of 5 stars JASON.......2007-05-11

THIS WASN'T AS SUSPENSEFUL AS 1 AND 2-BUT IT'S STILL A GREAT MOVIE!I LIKED THE MOTORCYCLE GANG.ANDY WAS CUT DOWN THE MIDDLE AND TIED UP LIKE A PRETZEL.I DIDN'T LIKE CHRIS AND RICK.CHRIS SCREAMED ALL THE TIME, AND RICK WAS A DORK.JASON STILL IS GREAT-AND HE ALWAYS WILL BE!

5 out of 5 stars JASON.......2007-04-28

MY COMMENTS ARE THE SAME AS PARTS 1 AND 2.EXCELLENT!I DIDN'T GET TO SEE IT IN 3D.I COULDN'T STAND SHELLY.I'M GLAD HE GOT KILLED.I COULDN'T STAND CHRIS EITHER-SHE SCREAMED ALL THE TIME.I LIKED CHILI AND CHUCK -THEY JUST WANTED A GOOD TIME AND SMOKED POT ALL THE TIME.THEY WERE FUNNY AND CUTE.I LIKED EDNA AND HAROLD.EDNA WAS ALWAYS YELLING AT HAROLD AND HAROLD JUST NODDED HIS HEAD LIKE OKAY DEAR.THAT WAS CUTE.

4 out of 5 stars "ITS COMIN AT YA".......2007-04-27

This 3rd installment which happens to be my favorite is so cool to watch with the 3-D version which I have now. Jason uses a variety of stabbing weapons all throughout the movie meant to be projected towards the viewer and is the first in many sequels where we see Jason don his famous hockey mask. I think all of the characters bring something of their own to the movie. You have the main character Chris who invites all her friends to stay with her and Derek her boyfriend at his house at Camp Crystal Lake . The character Shelly was pretty wacky with his scare tactics, and you have the 2 pot smoking hippies and the motor cycle gang stalking them. Some pretty tense moments for chris in this until the very end.

5 out of 5 stars Second best Jason-fest.......2007-04-20

Ok, first of all Oct Fri the 13th I FINALLY saw this movie in 3D, sigh I can die happy! Ok this one is really pretty awesome. Chris plays a great leading girl (the only F-13 leadI didnt want to see with an axe in her skull). The other characters are pretty harmless too. Wev'e got bikers (snort), pothead hippies, a fro'd chubster and a dude who can walks on his hands better than he can act. Plus this came out in the early 80's so the ratings board didnt demolish all the awesome gore scenes. I give this one a high-5! Cool deaths, funny scenes and aside from Chris's sherbert pants, some decent 80's fashion too. Yo Debbie, I want your bikini, too cuuute.

"Think of yourselves as the carrier pigeons of today!" instructs the manager of a bicycle delivery service. A young man from the country named Guei works diligently at this new job, eager to pay off the company bicycle and make it his own. But just before his last payment, the bicycle is stolen and he's fired--but if he can find it again, he'll get his job back. The emotional stakes of Beijing Bicycle become amazingly gripping: after Guei accidentally discovers that the bike now belongs to a young student who bought it used, a fight over the ownership of the bicycle becomes downright harrowing, for the student has a secret that threatens to humiliate him. Beijing Bicycle ranges from a light portrait of the kinetic poetry of a bicycle in motion to a raw examination of violence driven by envy and guilt. A beautiful, wrenching movie. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Let me introduce you to my little friend ... my Huffy!.......2007-03-08

I remember my first bike. It was a Huffy. It didn't have a name and I believe my excitement for it only lasted one summer, but it did get me from point A to point B, and I will always remember it for those solid memories. What would be my actions if during that one summer of joy my illustrious bike were to be stolen? Would I bring about wrath and vengeance upon anyone that dared cross my path? Probably not, but it would have been fun to have an adventure like the two boys in this film.

To make it simple. Boy is trained to be a courier. Bike is given, but needs to be paid off. Bike is nearly paid for when it is stolen. Boy goes bonkers. Change story. New boy finds love with new (stolen) bike. He makes more friends. He is the rooster of the farm. Then, these two boys meet. Violence begets violence. Boy looses girl. Boy continues to loose job. Violence ensues. Cut to visionary ending about the life of a bike.

Was this a documentary?

"Beijing Bicycle" kept my attention, but left me utterly confused as to who to root for. For the first hour of the film, I found myself on the original boy's side, but somehow changed midstream, but then changed back, only to find myself apathetic towards the end. This is not the consistency that I like my oatmeal. A lumpy camera gave us a sympathetic eye towards both of our characters, leaving us with nobody to love or to hate. I needed a definition with this film. I wanted to root for one character and only one character. By giving me passion for both I didn't really have any emotion towards the ending, which could have been quite dramatic.

I loved the music.

I loved the cinematography.

I loved that it promoted smoking.

I loved the characters - individually, but I needed a defined bad guy and a defined good guy. Don't get me wrong, when Vader picks up the Emperor at the end of "Jedi", I felt sympathy for the bad guy - but think of what the film would have been like if the Emperor kissed Vader right before he fell. That is the emotion happening with "Beijing Bicycle".

Could I watch this film again? Absolutely, but I could not sit still. I would know what was going to happen with our characters, I would know what feelings I would have for both of them by the end, and I would still find myself apathetic to any of their causes. One is strong, while the other is weak. It was like black vs. gray instead of black vs. white. I would call this film a "Study of Cinema's Gray Zone".

I will suggest this film to friends and family as a one time viewing. It was a decent outing for a film about a bicycle, and would have no problems buying this DVD for my old Huffy that is still rotting away in the garage. I think he would like it.

What are my thoughts?

I give this film an "Ehhhhhhhhhggggggggggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaa", as I feel weight on my shoulders as I thumb the edge of this DVD's box.

4 out of 5 stars Truly thought provoking.......2007-02-16

How hard do we hold onto things that really matter to us? Is the bicycle a metaphor - or is this movie just a study in human stubbornness. You decide. Highly entertaining too.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully authentic thought provoking movie .......2006-09-28

This is a wonderful story of a chinese migrant kid who moves from the village to Beijing to find a job and all the problems that come with it. This story revolves around his bicycle - essentially. I really enjoyed this movie for it's innocence and authentic feel. This is for one of those days when Hollywood just does not feel right and you need a highly refreshing change. I hope this movie wins some awards and is definitely going on my 'must watch' list.

5 out of 5 stars Plucky young man and his beloved bike.......2006-07-28

A 19 year old comes to Beijing to work and finds a job as a bicycle courier. He has to pay for the bike out of his earnings. Once the bike is paid in full, somebody steals it. Through determination and tenacity, he finds his bike. Another young man paid for it with money he stole from his father. It's a battle of wills between the two young men over the bike. I found it hard to watch because I felt for the farm boy.

I recommend this movie for anyone who got attached to something they worked hard for and lost it through misfortune. I had my bike stole several times as a kid. Amazingly, my parents kept buying me another one but sometimes I had to wait awhile.

There is a heartbreaking scene where he tries to wrestle his bike from tough teens. It got me close to tears.

1 out of 5 stars Choose quality, choose Zhang Yimou.......2006-07-27

As opposed to films which invoke the viewer to question consciousness and worth based on their quality of film making and story, "Bejing Bicycle" is one of those pictures where the viewer is forced to find a deeper meaning 'within' because the movie is simply lacking plot, character, and integrity. If the director was trying to call upon the viewers empathy - this was another failure on his part linked to Bejing Bicycle. After the third time the bicycle is stolen - come on already - you start to watch the clock. If you're looking for a quality film which provokes thought and real dialogue, look no further then Zhang Yimou. This is the kind of directing I believe Xiaoshuai Wang was going for in "Bejing Bicycle" but fail short of the mark.

Description

With music by The Charlatans, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Lynne Hughes, Mark Unobsky, Dan Hicks, Alice Stuart, Ph Phactor Jug Band, Final Solution, Wildflower, Boston Wranglers, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service

Directed By: Mary Works

Their names and music became legendary: Big Brother & the Holding Company, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and the house band - The Charlatans. If the psychedelic sixties were born in the dancehalls of San Francisco, then they were conceived in a saloon in Virginia City, Nevada where the musicians carried Winchesters & the kitchen served French gourmet meals.

The psychedelic era fostered cultural growth and artistic expression. The Red Dog Saloon was the incubator for the lightshow and psychedelic poster art, an entire lifestyle that truly defined a remarkable era and defied classification as it weaved it's tapestry of free love and music, which the Grateful Dead would spread around the world.

Filmmaker Mary Works (assistant editor "Titanic", "Saving Private Ryan") was entrusted with access to the lives, antics and attics of this unique extended rock and roll family that grew out of these wild times.

DVD Features - A conversation with the filmmakers, Where are they now?, Jim Marshall Photo Gallery and Interview

I gave this DVD every star available. It is solidly produced and presents a robust explication of a Movement which is taken for granted now, but was, lest we forget, ephemeral and wildly improbable in the extreme. Yet it happened. Chaos theory spins a tale of the "butterfly effect" which can eventually power a hurricane on the other side of the Earth. How did the long hair of the Hippie's actually come about? Were Hippies "slobs", "bums", "idiots"? No, they were perfectionists, actually, as any Grateful Dead roadie could endlessly testify. The accessability of the story is perhaps too clear and immediate for viewers to credit on first viewing. This film will get under your skin. It is neglected, discounted anthropology. It is important.

5 out of 5 stars The only footage of the Charlatans are on this DVD.......2007-01-21

I have to agree with some aspects of the negative reviews found here: Yes, if you're looking for stories revolving around the popular bands of the area, don't buy it. Actually, only buy this, if you heard or read of the Red Dog Saloon before. Because then it's safe to assume that you are really familiar with the development of the music scene in San Francisco in the 60s. Because then you don't have to rely on this DVD to learn who the Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane were.

If the Red Dog Saloon does ring a bell, buy this DVD. Buy it, because it contains the only known footage of the Charlatans, the real pioneers. True: If you listen to their sound you would never guess that they were the spearhead of the music scene back in 64 and 65. But that's not the point. This DVD basically explains why the Charlatans worked as a band, as an image and as a visual focus point that drew people because it was way cool.

Also to be seen on DVD: Excerpts of the Red Dog Reunion concert back in the early 90s with the Charlatans and Big Brother And The Holding Company. Lynne Hughes is there, too. The background of the Light Machine is explained. Interviews with people from the scene less famous than the typical names associated with it. Oh yes, and music. Music that is virtually forgotten by most of us today but still belongs and is easily identified as part of the dawn of psychedelic rock.

The bottom line: Great if not fantastic DVD for people interested in the background of the music scene. It concentrates on the Red Dog and leaves therefore little room for the more famous bands of the area. But that was not the intention. The DVD is a joy to watch. It is great to listen to the interviews. I will treasure this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Music Backstory .......2006-04-16

I consider this an essential documentary of the sixties music scene. It's a story that might well be lost without this film.

If you're expecting a Grateful Dead video, like all the other videos from this company, then don't bother buying this one.

I'm really quite shocked by the one star reviews of this fascinating video. I guess either you get it or you don't.

Rockin' at the Red Dog isn't boring - it's hip, man, you dig?

3 out of 5 stars What happened to the Thirteenth.......2006-03-16

Floor Elevators? I know it is always debateable as to who coined the term psychedelic and who was the first "psychedelic" band. I don't know for sure. History is fickle at best in this area, but I do think that in any psychedelic movie the Elevators should certainly at least be mentioned, as well as some other bands of the era...but it is always the Grateful Dead, Big Brother, Quicksilver, and the San Francisco bands that are mentioned. Don't get me wrong. They belong there and I still enjoy their music--especially Quicksilver's--but where are Roky Erikson and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators?
