An older movie about bigfoot but still nonetheless informative. One of my favorites.

I love this DVD. This is the best dvd out there on Bigfoot. Watching it makes me want to know more. I found what Dr. Grover Krantz said about the famous Patterson film very interesting. If you love Bigfoot and learning about him this is the DVD to buy!

5 out of 5 stars Big Foot }A& E }.......2007-04-11

This is a good film and makes you think about what's out there .

5 out of 5 stars A nice documentary.......2006-12-18

This dvd had some interesting information from Dr. Grover Krantz and Peter Byrne who gave the documentary a serious perspective. There was good information about Native American artwork and other items which depict an ape-like creature, which gives credible evidence for the possibility that a secretive primate might exist in North America. There were also accounts of alleged bigfoot encounters. The sound effects were very good. I have loaned the DVD to many individuals and they also enjoyed this documentary. If you can buy a used DVD this is a good buy. This is the best documentary that I have seen, although I have not yet seen Discovery Channel's "Legend Meets Science".

I notice on a certain website that "Sasquatch Odysessy: The Hunt for Bigfoot" and "Sasquatchin" were both listed as better than this DVD. I whole heartedly disagree. These latter DVDs are a circus act and way over priced.

4 out of 5 stars A&E Ancient Mysteries.......2006-07-29

This is the Bigfoot episode of A&E's Ancient Mysteries series. I have this recorded on VHS and will end up comparing content between the vhs and the dvd in the future. None-the-less, this Leonard Nimoy narrated episode is done quite well if not brief. It's less than 50 minutes long and there are no extras. The show itself is one of the better ones on the subject matter of bigfoot. Main sources for this documentary are from the late Grover Krantz and Peter Byrne with his former Bigfoot Research Project out of Mt Hood, OR. It includes the Scott Herriett/Daryl Owen video footage of a purported bigfoot in the bushes; I however have never "seen" what the hell it is they say is a bigfoot in their video (even with the computer enhancement version, I just don't see it) and I've never seen much further coverage of it anywhere but this show. This episode originally aired in 1994 and lightly revamped in 1997, I recommend this for your bigfoot collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sober documentary.......2006-02-13

Caution: Do not confuse with the Sci-Fi Channel's series of the same name!

No theatrics here, just sober investigations into several purported hauntings. This is not a "balanced" documentary: The emphasis is on evidence in favor of the proposition that these hauntings are real. The film features extensive witness monologues instead of sound bites intercut with special effects and spooky music, as is too often the case in this genre. Some, including at least one reviewer here, may find this approach dull. I found it informative and serious. Usually I find shows like this funny or embarassing.

5 out of 5 stars I've got to say it's good. I'm in it!.......2005-01-26

We shot this series back in the UK in 1997 and it was the first of a whole host of "Paranormal" programmes on TV. It came long before "Most Haunted" and the like, and was the Discovery Channel's biggest programme in the UK with over 4 million viewers.

All the stories were so well researched, I believe it is still one of the most honest ghost documentary series ever produced.

My main appearance was in The Phantom Schoolmaster (Disc 1), and that one episode took almost 4 days to shoot which is something not heard of nowadays! The research was real and the stories came from reliable witnesses.

But I could be biased! Have a look for yourself. If you don't like it then you can sell it on an auction site!

After all, there must be something in it. Discovery are still re-running it in the UK after 8 years!

Cheers!

All four "Ghosthunter" DVDs are well worth your money and time.
It is true that the episodes are all based in Britain, and that's just fine. England is the ghost capitol of the world!
All episodes are well written and very well done. There is a good bit of English history thrown in of course, because you need to understand the haunted area in order to appreciate the haunting itself.Do yourself a favor, if you are a ghost buff, and buy these DVDs. You won't regret it!

Product Description

Lizzie Borden took an ax, and gave her mother 40 whacks; when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41. Most of us know the grisly rhyme, but not the whole story. Who was Lizzie Borden? Did she really murder her father and stepmother on that muggy morning in August 1892? Or does she stand wrongly accused?

1 out of 5 stars I just happened to see this last night...........2007-03-11

(March 9 2007 rebroadcast) I must've miss this the first time around. YES, why hasn't a modern foresnic study been done? There is likely plenty of evidence still in the Borden home, even after 100 years. The re-enactors in this production are just dreadful... Mrs. B is portrayed by a skinny, young-ish woman and the Lizzie actor doesn't even have her red hair and moon face and looks about 20 year old (Lizzie was 32 at the time of the murders), and the Irish maid spits out a couple of words in an attempted British accent. (Bad acting is the fault of the director.) The reenactments aren't done convincingly and the production is sub-standard- far below the usual level of History Channel mysteries. This episode is not worth watching. Please, some production company put together a show that applies modern forensic CSI to what evidence remains in the Borden home and the Fall River historical society has plenty of artifacts to test. Like those hatchets and clothing! Minute, old blood spots will still be intact. Well, I think Lizzie did it, and don't we all? She must've been PMSing! Let's face it this was one dysfunctional family. Lizzie didn't sell her story to Hollywood, give interviews or pen an autobio.

    2 out of 5 stars 1800s Woman on Trial.......2006-12-27

You would almost think this was made by Court TV, rather than another cable channel. It's intended for those who like the true crime genre, even with its dash of feminism and women's studies. This work has some cheesy reenactments in it. For example, the murder victims were bludgeoned, but the actors portray them as if they were fainting and there is no fake blood anywhere. One actor has huge, 19th-Century sideburns that were obviously bought at a five-and-dime wig shop and lazily glued on.

The work foreshadows matters by saying "crime of the century" and noting that the event happened in the 90s of a century. Later in the work, they very explicitly say Lizzie Borden was the O.J. Simpson of the 1800s. Later the work introduces that Miss Borden may have had lesbian relationships. I am surprised that they didn't then bring up Aileen Wuornos or Wanda Jean, lesbians in the 1990s who were prosecuted for murder, just as Miss Borden was. O.J. is as far as the work goes in trying to get modern audiences to relate.

The work had female and male interviewees. One interviewee is a psychotherapist and they never once explain why she was/is an expert on the subject; very random! They don't bring up when Martin Prince in drag as Miss Borden says, "Three whacks with a wet noodle, Bart!" on "The Simpsons."

    Description

The witch, sorceress, enchantress, the devil's consort--she has haunted the human consciousness and captured our imagination for thousands of years. The fear of the witch is woven deep within our psyche, but, surprisingly, there was a time when the witch was not a source of evil. Known for her ability to harness the hidden powers of nature herself--she was the caster of magical spells and the brewer of healing potions. What are her secret powers? And why did they become so feared and despised? Why would the witch be hunted down so mercilessly by the Inquisitor during the witch trials of Europe's Middle Ages and in the Puritan heartland of Salem, Massachusetts? The reasons lie buried deep in the ancient past. Join us on ANCIENT MYSTERIES and learn the surprising answers to the mystery of the witch.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A most informative look at the history of witchcraft.......2006-12-02

This 1996 Ancient Mysteries production basically provides viewers with an overview of the shifting cultural images of witchcraft over the past several millennia, with special emphasis on The Burning Years, which saw tens of thousands of women (as well as men and children) condemned, tortured, and executed for witchcraft. In historical terms, it is a well-made documentary, but it never really answered some of the questions I had expected it to take on - namely, the origins of so many common myths about witches (e.g., the broomstick, the black conical hat, the witch's familiar).

The roots of witchcraft reach down to the origins of human communities themselves, and the presentation makes the point quite well that the most ancient of witches were seen in a most positive light. In their earliest incarnation, they were wise women who could call upon their acquired knowledge of nature to heal the sick, banish evil spirits from homes, etc. The question then becomes: what happened to transform the witch into the most evil, dangerous of creatures? There is no clear-cut answer to this, but we do know that the Israelites laid down the law against witchcraft after settling in Canaan. Clearly, though, the final straw that sealed witches' fate to be looked upon as evil monsters and consorts of Satan was the Black Plague. When one out of every three individuals sickens and dies, it's all too easy to become hysterical and look for scapegoats. No one may ever expect the Spanish Inquisition, but the inquisitors certainly suspected witches of evildoing, eventually killing tens of thousands of individuals over the course of two whole centuries. They were helped along mightily by the publication of a book in 1487 called the Malleus Maleficarum; this was nothing less than a detailed guidebook for identifying and defeating witches, and it cemented witchcraft firmly with Satanism in the minds of inquisitors. The documentary makes clear just how barbaric and murderous a time this was in human history, with Inquisitors basically torturing a confession out of anyone even accused of the evils of witchcraft - indeed, new implements of torture were designed for this very purpose. As accused witches began being burned at the stake in droves (particularly in France and Germany), the image of the witch became inherently evil.

This murderous paranoia eventually spread to the New World, culminating in the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. The documentary offers its take on the origins of this infamous chapter in American history and offers theories on a possible political agenda behind it all. In the last segment, the presentation looks at the rebirth of witchcraft in the past century, offering some ideas as to why the practice of this ancient way of life emerged from the ashes of history so strongly in recent years.

It's all very interesting, but more in a historical than a psychological/sociological sense. The 45-minute format to the program doesn't allow for a lot of detail, but the overview itself is excellent and quite informative.

      Description

According to the Bible, the fabled Ark of the Covenant was an ancient wooden chest covered with beaten gold and was said to be the centerpiece of ancient Jewish religious life. It was a source of great power?the device through which God spoke to the Israelites! Reputedly, only the priests of Levi could handle it without being killed by it. But if it did exist, where is it today? Ethiopian Jews claim to have it, while rabbis claim the real Ark is still in a secret room under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Does it still retain the power to defeat armies?

1 out of 5 stars All hpye and nothing else.......2007-03-29

This presentation has nothing going for it...Aside from the narrator quoting long passages directly out of scripture, and a few second-rate experts making bold if otherwise speculative statements, this program says very little about where the ark may be,or what may have happened to it...

5 out of 5 stars Where IS the Ark of the Covenant.......2007-01-08

The Old Testament is strangely silent regarding the last known location of the Ark of the Covenant. This video offered some very logical and substantial possibilities, and reasons, for where the Ark may be to this day. A fascinating journey. Well worth viewing.

      3 out of 5 stars More Mystery..........2006-09-21

In this program we are introduced to the idea of the Ark of the Covenant being kept safe in Ethiopia. The entire program focuses on how the Ark could have been moved from the Temple to Ethiopia and from that perspective it is fascinating. An understanding of cultural significance evolves and a deeper understanding of a culture still focusing on the Ark of the Covenant may be a surprise to many. If you have any interest in researching this topic, then this will be a brief introduction to a fascinating idea of spiritual significance.

      ~The Rebecca Review

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Thought Provoking.......2006-08-14

This well-produced DVD is an excellent summary of various theories of what happened to the fabled Ark of the Covenant. The theories range from nonexistence to hidden under Jerusalem's Temple Mount in a secret chamber. The DVD is almost entirely about the Ethiopian and Temple Mount theroies. The most interesting aspect is how the 2 theories are merged into a coherent whole. Tantalizing is the fact that there may be 2 Arks, both of which the locations are known but access is prohibited. Both the photography and narration are very good. Bibical scholars provide good commentary. My only criticism is of the reenactments. Most are too "Hollywood" with the actors looking like Caucasians dressed in costumes rather than ancient Isrealites. Especially recommended for those who like Biblical mysteries.

In 1812, Johann Burckhardt ventured into the Jordanian desert and discovered hundreds of structures stretching for miles along narrow canyons: the ancient city of Petra. Narrated by Leonard Nimoy, ANCIENT MYSTERIES® journeys into the past, unlocking the secrets long held captive behind Jordan's sandstone cliffs. Nearly 200 years after its discovery, archaeologists are still astonished at the ruins of Petra. The city evokes wonder in all who behold it--who were the people who carved these structures into solid rock, and how? Wander through what was once a thriving, sophisticated city and glean insight into the Nabataeans, the ancient people who lived and worked here. What caused their strange disappearance? Interviews with archaeologists and anthropologists and stunning location footage illuminate an incredible account of THE HIDDEN CITY OF PETRA. DVD Features: Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative.......2007-01-10

The program does examine well who these people were, why Petra was so successful, and what happened to it. It does so in a very entertaining way and is well worth seeing. My only reservation is that there could have been more detail about the people's way of life and what the remains of Petra actually represented. It is a little unclear about what were tombs and what were not and what the actual layout of the site was.I realise of course that there is still a lot of work going on at the site.

4 out of 5 stars More legend than history..........2001-11-24

A good introduction to Arthurian legend. I was hoping the video would spend more time on the historical and archaeological data that supports (or doesn't support) the arguments about whether or not Arthur really existed. The video spent more time tracking the development of the legend in literature. Enjoyable all the same.

I have used this movie before in my English II class as we are reading Morte de Arthur. It really helps the students develop a sense of how Camelot's legend came about and how much of it could be true. Every year, someone asks, "Is this a folk tale, truth or non-fiction?" Now I pop in the tape and let them make up their own minds.
