Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (Phar Lap) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Not the correct region for DVD players.......2007-07-03

DVD arrived promptly and in good order, however, due to Australia being in the Oceania region our DVD players cannot play US type DVDs. Amazon did warn me that this was a possibility - however, no option was given by Amazon to choose a DVD for this region - Oceania. I am stuck with a DVD I cannot watch

5 out of 5 stars Two of My Favorite Stars.......2007-05-07

Classic Western in a new setting. The stoic cowboy and the damsel in distress Down Under. It is always a good evening when watching the interactions of the cowboy and the 'crazy lady'.

From the beginning when he rescues her and she 'latches onto him' as her protector, right to the end when she.... Well... that would be telling.

It has all the right mixtures, The Good Guy, The Surprisingly Tough Damsel, and The Overstated Evil Cattle Baron, all in the wilds of old Australia. Good Stuff!

5 out of 5 stars I never thought this movie could be a Western was I Wrong this is a Western in a Far off Land........2007-03-11

Man I love it when the bad guys get it in the end, and they do in this movie. Tom Selleck plays a Great Hero in this movie. If you can handle some Brutal seens ,Blood and Shot'em up swearing, but in the content of this movie its done to bring its point across and does that.Hey Who Watchs Westerns in Todays World? I-still-do.Dont forget Open Range too!

5 out of 5 stars Tom Selleck.......2007-02-12

A different kind of western! The story line is good and Tom Selleck his usual great self!

3 out of 5 stars Quigley ... not a bad movie.......2007-02-06

It was sort of a Revisionist Western. It was set in the Colonial period of Australia . The best things were

* the cinematography of Australia's glorious landscape. Most of it shot around Alice Springs where I lived the a while.

* adequate performances from the 3 main characters ..Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo currently seen as Maya Gallo in TV show "Just Shoot Me", and Alan Rickman .... and it has dingo's too

"Quigley" is a reasonable action movie which revealed the truth of our shameful past.

No, this isn't a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort. This time around, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) is trying to pop the question to Bianca (Eva Gabor) when they're summoned to Australia, where a young boy has been kidnapped by a pallid, gray-faced poacher (who looks like and is voiced by George C. Scott). Wilbur, a chatterbox of an albatross (John Candy, replacing the late Jim Jordan's character Orville), and Jake (Tristan Rogers), a kangaroo mouse--Bernard is jealous of the dashing rodent--assist the Rescuers in saving the day and imparting a mild environmental message. The film opens with an absolutely breathtaking aerial sequence--this was made near the beginning of Disney's animation renaissance--so impressive it would seem the story, literally, has nowhere else to go but down, but some smart gags, excellent animation, and rollicking adventures ensue. So why isn't it better known? It had the bad luck to open, in 1990, opposite another kids' film--Home Alone. --David Kronke

3 out of 5 stars I remember this better.......2007-01-15

Released a full 13 years after the original, The Rescuers Down Under was the first Disney sequel, but was also considered a failure at the box office, which stopped Disney releasing later sequels theatrically. Hence, the reason why Disney now have a long line of straight-to-DVD sequels, which no one ever buys, and all end up in the bargain bin.

This is definitely my favourite out of the two Rescuers movies, mainly cos I was going through a fascination with Australian accents at the time - and why I later moved on to watching Home & Away and Neighbours - but it was so colourful, and bright. And the Australian accents. I remembered this more before seeing it than I did the original, even though it must have been the same amount of time (years) since I'd seen them.

It's a shame there were never more in the series, but because of the death of Eva Gabor (Miss Biana) in 1995, they were never made, and the two movies never became Disney classics.

Listen out also for the late and sorely missed John Candy, voicing Wilbur, the brother of Orville from the first one. He's hilarious as Wilbur.

Other reviewers have mentioned various flaws in the film (Cody's lack of Australian accent for example), but for me, I have to remain loyal. You can keep your Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, and the awful sequels to Cinderella & Little Mermaid (which are now two a piece by the way!), I'll have this over the rest of them any day.

4 out of 5 stars Ok sequel.......2007-01-12

Not as good as the first, but still a good movie. A few scary parts for small children.

5 out of 5 stars Madonna - The Girlie Show........2007-02-16

This concert dvd is absolutely fantastic.
It is brilliant and entertaining from start to finish.
It is on par with Blonde Ambition and The Confessions tour.
An absolute "must" have for all Madonna fans, and even if you are not a fan of Madonna, but like being entertained by watching a great show, this is for you.
Spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Is To Be Expected!.......2007-01-28

Recently, I've been taking-in the numerous pleasures of Madonna via her "Sex" book era of Erotica and Romance. Purchasing the CD of the single's title and picking up this concert at the same time, seemed a fiery mesh of beauty that I hoped I could handle all at once.

Luckily: I couldn't.

While I had read many other reviews ranging from mild interest to love to absolute hate, I decided to tune out all else I had experienced and just focus on the Lady M. My final verdict? Complete and utter dancing, early 90's era bliss.

Over the past few years, I've found Madonna's performances rather lacking. While I always considered the "Drowned World Tour" her best effort, there were moments I wished had been taken out of the set list, along with other aspects of her recently completed "Confessions Tour." At times, these two concerts took things a little bit too seriously, with Madonna so full of her spiritual self that it distracted from all other sequences appearing behind her. A shining example of such would be the interlude of Dancers' Confessions that paved the way for Madonna's "Live to Tell" during the NBC Broadcast of "Confessions." The whole routine was horridly produced and cliched beyond belief, made all the worse by the fact that Madge was taking it all to heart. She was ruining herself under all these trying-too-hard efforts at shock that it was really quite . . . laughable.

However, "The Girlie Show" is nothing short of spectacular! Where as other tours have been parody-worth due the over-the-top seriousness, this concert was pure and simple fun. If anyone else had tried to pull off some of the antics contained on this DVD, they would be the stock of laugh of the entire country. However, Madonna makes it all work in some odd choreographed way. No matter how crazy or insane the spectacle becomes, you can continually see Madonna laughing, smiling, and singing through the sweat, making for a great concert of high energy, leaving undertones at the door.
The epitome occurs with "I'm Going Bananas," an infectiously silly rendering of Spanish style music and fun circus-style entertainment, which, at the end of the day, makes up the meat of "The Girlie Show."

"Erotica"..."Bye Bye Baby"..."The Beast Within"..."Justify My Love" - It's all one night of pure perfection.

~Highly recommended~

5 out of 5 stars Hot show.......2006-10-19

I loved this concert! I always liked the routine she did for Bye Bye Baby. Very clever. She had a very tight band on this tour, including Omar Hakim on drums, who has played with Sting and many other artists. He keeps the beat like no one else. This was such a playful show. Her later tours were a bit political in overtone, but this tour was like a circus. I much prefer Madonna in this context. No message - just singing and dancing. Hot.

4 out of 5 stars Not My Favorite Madonna, But Worth It.......2006-08-28

Dont get me wrong I love Madonna. She beautiful, provocative, talented, and all those things. But this is my least favorite concert, the concert was in support to her racy album Erotica and it was around the time her infamous but 5 star Sex Book was released. She had a few lows during the concert (i.e. Like A Virgin,Vogue, and La Isla Bonita) but she performed her new hits with style and originality! Deeper and Deeper, Erotica, Bye Bye Baby,Fever, Why Its So Hard, and Rain. Madonna was working her bottom off it seemed during the elaborate show. The Girlie Show was splendid, again not one of her best such as Drowned World or Confessions Tour. But would would defiently recommend this its a great item to have for any fan and its an exotic show to be watched. Many will LOVE! Its very racy in some seens, it should be for kids 13 - 15 and up (recommended).

The Allies had barely driven the Nazis out of Rome when Roberto Rosselini went to work on Open City, considered by most to be his greatest work. Shot on bits and short ends of scavenged film, this film helped define Italian neorealism. Audiences were convinced that the actors were all amateurs (they weren't) and the whole film was improvised (it wasn't; the three screenwriters included Federico Fellini). With its semidocumentary camera style and use of actual locations, the film does feel very real. Of course, so does the opening half-hour of Saving Private Ryan, and like that film Open City is at its heart a classic war yarn any Hollywood studio would feel at home with. The story involves members of the Italian underground trying to smuggle badly needed cash out of Nazi-occupied Rome to partisan fighters in the mountains, while the Nazis are hunting down one of the underground, a notorious freedom fighter and seditionist. Anna Magnani (an actor well established in her own country who became an international star with this film) is often singled out for her portrayal as the pregnant, unwed woman who gets caught up in the action on her wedding day, but the entire cast is topnotch. The sparse subtitles are both a blessing and a curse--there is less to read, which allows the viewer to concentrate on the visuals, but there are times when non-Italian-speakers will feel like they're missing out on some juicy dialogue. --Geof Miller

4 out of 5 stars Unique and Powerful. .......2007-05-30

I have to agree with a couple of the reviewers here that this film is rather dated, but I can think of few movies from the late forties, even the great ones, that the same thing can't be said about. Open City captivates the viewer almost immediately as it is a moving story. With our first glimpse of Manfredi on the balcony we get a pretty good idea about what the plot will concern. I found it to be legitimately suspenseful and a classic in every sense of the word. One must remember that artists like Rossellini were the building blocks with which our contemporary cinema was erected. There's much that's "great" about this movie. The only contrived element, in my mind, was the speech of the German soldier at the very end which was not believable, but at that time it was the first self-denigrating speech of its kind. What is clichéd and hackneyed to us now was breathtakingly new back then. Considering that many of its actors had no acting experience whatever, Open City is an amazing endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars A most enduring and powerful classic.......2007-01-05

Open City is a classic that nearly defies classification of genre. Although hailed by serious critics as a neorealist masterpiece, and understandably so, it's strength, ironically, lies in its starker resemblence to melodrama, similar to Luchino Visconti's The Damned. What makes Open City a masterpiece is not only its trim, forceful screenplay but Rossellini's ability to utilize the wartime, grainy film stock and presence of the actual, newly defeated fascist army to portray a sense of immediate reality of the occupation and those who so courageously fought against the fascists. Open City's plot and characters are black and white, because, to the courageous resistance fighters in fascist occupied Rome, there was no luxury of quibbling over nuances and perspective. Rossellini's filmmaking, such as his meticulously judicious use of closeups, is still one of the most meticulous of any director to this day. This film is an enduring film classic that should be seen by not only students of film but all young people. Open City's stark characterization need to be understood in the context of the situation. Audiences can, with hindsight, make good sense of Rossellini's choices and contextualize them as they gain appreciation for this beauty of film classics.

3 out of 5 stars DVD quality poor...Actual Movie Excellent........2006-12-03

A beautiful and gripping story is marred by the use of poor movie print when transferred to DVD. I would have to believe there is a better copy of the movie available to transfer to DVD. A five star movie is reduced to 3 stars by the poor DVD.

4 out of 5 stars A visceral film; exceptionally natural and real........2006-09-11

"Oh, it's not difficult to die well," a character opines in this film; "the difficult thing is to live right." "Open City" ends with a firing squard executing this man (in the back, no less), for having "lived right" against Nazi occupation. This film has a you-are-there visceral feel to it and shows how Italians were united against their Nazi occupation---thus the film utilizes 3 diverse, but interconnected, focal points: a man and his pregnant girlfriend on the eve of their wedding, a leader of the Communist resistance, and a Catholic priest. It is a film worthy of watching (albeit overpriced). Cheers

Description

This poignant and powerful documentary takes a shocking, first-hand look at the culture of hate that permeates the West Bank and Gaza, and which continues to escalate the perennial violence pitting Palestinians against Israelis. Starting out in the city of Nablus (where as many as 80 percent of suicide bombing plots are planned), James Miller and Saira Shah ended up in the Gaza town of Rafah, one of the most dangerous cities in this volatile region. There they spent several weeks focusing on the activities of three Palestinian children - two 12-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl - who have grown up surrounded by messages of hate against Israel (whose military presence in their town is a constant), and taught that the greatest glory is to die a martyr. The film ends on a day like many other days in Rafah, with death - except that on this day, the fallen victim happens to be the man making this film.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2007-06-01

Hmm...

* All the scenes in schools involve teaching kids to hate Jews. (Funny, I've been through years of Jewish education and spent lots of time in Israeli schools, and I've never seen the reverse towards Muslims.)

* Kids get shot at because they spend their afternoon recreation time throwing hand-grenades and rocks at tanks while they're at work. Well, duh? And their deaths accomplish *what*, exactly, for Palestinian statehood?

To me, this movie accentuated the pernicious evil of the paramilitary "resistance" organizations in treating kids as weapons -- and the concomitant unlikelihood of a shared peace settlement. The more of their children die pointlessly like those in the film (such as in blowing up Jewish "pigs" and "dogs", to use their own words from the film), the harder it's going to be to accept a legitimate compromise settlement -- they'd have to accept that all of their kids really did get themselves killed for nothing.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2007-04-15

This movie gives watchers with little background on the issue the IMPRESSION of being bias-free. However, it's filled with subtle biases that favor Israel and its close to 40 year occupation of Palestine.

Moreover, the woman (Sarah) who was speaking to the child was ridiculous. In one scene, a boy was telling her of his toy gun. She sat there smiling at him, instead of explaining how this is a product of occupation and violence directed at the Palestinian people.

Also, if watchers understood Arabic, they would see that in more than one scene, the translation is completely misleading. For example, the boys (Ahmad and his friend) are speaking of prayer and how FELLOW PALESTINIANS (not Israelis, as the translation puts it) are praying incorrectly. By phrasing the words in English as if they are pointed at the Israelis, this movie is furthering false notions of Palestinians society.

NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

4 out of 5 stars fair.......2007-04-10

There were some scenes in here I was glad I saw. Nothing was quite so powerful was watching boys throwing stones at tanks and seeing tanks fire back. Stones versus tanks. To those that say the movie is biased because it doesn't cover the Israeli point of view, I will reiterate what has been said over and over--he was killed before he got a chance. The crew seemed rightly appalled at the way Palestinian miltants used children--this is no blind propaganda for the Palestinian cause. But you know, if ever anyone had a good reason to be biased, it would certainly be one who was killed by the mighty while weilding only a white flag

5 out of 5 stars The making of martyrs . . ........2006-10-09

This film about life among young Palestinians packs the usual punch of HBO documentaries. Celebrated British filmmakers Miller and Shah get as close to the skirmishes directed against Israeli troops as possible, capturing footage that refuses to turn away from the human cost of this particular kind of urban warfare. It is high-risk filmmaking, and we know from the start that Miller is killed by Israeli gunfire before the shooting of the film is completed.

Viewers not familiar with the Palestinian resistance will be shocked by the impact that fear and hatred of the Israelis has made upon the youngest generation - the boys flinging rocks at Israeli tanks, who have come under the influence of masked, gun-wielding insurgents. We meet two young boys, close friends, who manufacture explosives, and an older girl who has lost several members of her family and weeps at yet another funeral. The romance of martyrdom overwhelms their youthful world as a welcomed though not fully understood prospect.

There is little resolution to the powerlessness the viewer can feel watching this film, and those sympathetic with the Israeli side of the equation will find it represented by distant, menacing armed figures in military uniforms or moving through the streets in tanks - objects to be feared, scorned, and hated. And as the film represents this ongoing struggle, there seems to be no end in sight. Worth seeing as a look behind the daily news from that part of the troubled world.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Sacrifice.......2006-05-09

I found this documentary to be very emotional for me. James Miller went to great lengths to try to give us an accurate picture of the Palestinian side of the conflict from the views of three kids. It's about time someone tried to do this. Unfortunately, he paid the ultimate price for his venture. But it leaves me to wonder if this story would have had the impact that it has had if he didn't die. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is interested into finding out "both sides of a story" and who values those journalists who risk their lives to bring those stories to us.

Following Australia's horror hit, Wolf Creek, the Savage Sinema box set celebrates Aussie horror with three of director Mark Savage's cult classics: Marauders (1986), Sensitive New Age Killer (2000), and Defenceless (2004). Savage's schlock gore, killer style, and campy, criminal characters, such as the Dominatrix Cop (Carolyn Bock) in SNAK, recall Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Waters, and Larry Clark. Marauders, Savage's '80s, low-budget video feature, looks fashionably trendy now, post-Kids, with its New Wave, New Romantic delinquent protagonists. Jamie stabs his mom to death, Emilio shoots his wife for not giving him the car keys, and David (Paul Harrington), a kid taking his girlfriend out for a cabin retreat, hits Jamie with his hot rod and speeds away. As Jamie and Emilio hunt David down to kill him, their cruel antics enrage everyone they encounter, culminating in a final scene depicting the teens done in by an angry mob. In SNAK, normal guys-by-day and hitmen-by-night Paul Morris (Paul Moder) and George Hartley (Kevin Hopkins) repeatedly bungle assignments, as Paul feels the monotony of suburbia creeping in until his gangster hero, The Snake (Frank Bren), enters his life. Defenceless, the bloodiest film, features wife and mother, Elizabeth, (Susanne Hausschmid) whose refusal to sign a land development deal results in the murders of her loved ones, followed by her deranged revenge. Defenceless's total lack of dialogue depends on its gruesome visual content for narrative, making it the most unnerving to watch. These films' are uniquely disturbing, not only for their graphic, explicit content, but because Savage has a knack for interpreting mental illness with uncanny realism. If one can stomach wife-beatings, child abuse, rape, murder, self-mutilation, and torture, Savage's films render characters haunted by inner-conflict. The box set also includes early Savage shorts, Savage's diary entries made during film shoots, and an entertaining Making Of Marauders featurette. --Trinie Dalton

Mark Savage's films are incredibly entertaining and disturbing. The best exploitation and horror generally is. A seminal box set!

I have seen my share of worthless "entertainment" in my day, this release gives new meaning to "trash" - but not "trash" as in totally void of morality (but fun anyway),but as in "trash"that's not worth the disc it's mastered to! These "films" demonstrate mind-numbingly amateurish "acting" that I haven't experienced in quite some time.Jeez,we really must not have anything left to release on the dvd format,as this set proves they are scraping the bottom of the barrel!I really am struggling to recognize any talent Subversive Cinema is seeing in this?Trust me,the "shocking violence" is nothing you haven't seen already (and much more convincingly) in many other exploitation films from decades past.I want my money back....

As Pauline and the pro tour depart for Fiji, the surfer girl house-sits at the bottom of New Zealand, where she encounters snowy sheep, gale force winds, men who shape boards out of felled trees and the love of her life.
