3 out of 5 stars Executioners need protection.......2007-02-09

Average movie with OK acting, and many questions that needed to be answered to make this a classic!

I bought this movie because some of the reviews said that it was very good, but they did not tell the true story. At first the son was made to look like a little girl, and immediately study his mother's technique. The movie never really answered why the father made that decision, which was a key to the movie. I did like the interaction between the father and son, because that showed how the son wanted to emulate and aspire to follow in his father's footsteps as a warrior. I thought some of the interaction between the father and wife was a little unnecessary, and had nothing to do with the movie. The romance portion was short-lived, because that was it!!

Many of these movies devalue women once they have kids. They may have been a good warrior, but once the kids come then she becomes nothing but a cook, laundry maiden, and house servant. To me that is sad, because the plot would have worked even more by showing the mother as a great fighter who helped her husband's kung fu by continually fighting him with a different technique to help him grow stronger. Instead she just stood by and kept telling the husband that "you are not ready to fight Pai-Ma, you must study more!" If your husband was going to fight somebody who killed your father or brother would you send him out unprepared? NO WAY !!!

Other than these problems, the movie developed very slowly, but was not a total waste, because the scenes with Pai-Ma were all pretty good. This is not a must have, but its definitely worth watching if you are a fan of Pai Ma.

5 out of 5 stars Great Old School Actioner.......2006-06-14

For those waiting decades (literally) to get a remastered and widescreen version of this film and with the original English dubs, this is so far the one to get. One important thing though, is the Celestial Pictures remastered version, even though only with subtitles, the picture and audio quality is much better. You will notice the difference if you have both versions and watch them side by side. Another thing is the Chinese dub at least at one point came on. This was the scene when Hung See Kuan fights Pai Mei for the first time and grabs his groin. Pai Mei was supposed to say "Can't find it?" Instead it was spoken in Chinese. Another noticable thing is since it seems Red Sun was mixing the English dub when convenient, the syncing would be noticable off. For instance, in the last fight with Hung Wen Ding, the sound effects are a little late after the actual movements have occurred. This syncing problem also occurs in the Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu Red Sun release.

5 out of 5 stars there is a reason you pay a couple dollars more for the red sun versions over groundzero.......2006-04-25

actually reasons, and big ones at that. It's not panned and scanned, it is presented in 16:9 format. Which I actually prefer over letterbox, if I had a big screen, I would probably take the letterbox, but this is to peoples advantage if you have around a 25 inch tv like me. Also another big plus is that unlike groundzero, you will be getting beautiful remastering job with no scratches, and I guarantee that. Now the sound is really the inly thing that they could have improved on. It only has 2-channel english language but the sound quality is still very good and won't fluxuate throughout the movie. The sound does change slightly but only because during the action, they just use original language track, but whenever they shift to speech, they have the john wayne sound-a-like AND COMPANY WHO DO ALL THE OLD SCHOOL AND NEW SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER. So get ready for the same old voices, but again the sound shifts but is barely noticeable, I'm just a nitpicker. So overall it's worth the 3-5 dollars more.

Now the movie itself is absolutely wonderful. It has the great Chen Kuan Tai playing one of the last disciples after their shaolin temple was burned down. The movie starts with an introduction of how Pai Mei became a traitor and decided to help the ching's. It show's the head abbot of shaolin in a duel with pai mei and show his special kung fu internal style. Externally is shown just as well. I honestly can't think of a greater actor to play the traitor of the ming's. So in the next fight we get the greatest cameo of gordon liu's career. I had actually forgotten that this guy is a great actor until watching this and shaolin challenges ninja again. Now the action is made up of about 5 scenes. One after the other they get better and better but none surpassed the first 2 of the movie, the rest were just better because of the character development and the finale could not have been much better. Sure it could be bette in terms of speeds and superamn jumps but this is a hell of a lot more complex than your average kung fu tale. Now if I was only rating the fu it would only get like a 3.5, compared to say hitman in the hand of buddha would get a 3.5 or 4 btu is still only a 3 star movie. So after chen Kuan Tai escapes(thanks to gordon) he goes in hidnign and travels with the peking opera on the junks. Now I will certainly not leave out li-li-li, the hottest woman in cinema history. She meets kuan tai and marries him and they have a son who is played by wong yue. I am not familiar and didn't like him al that much, but he more than fit the bill for his fighting. So when the junks are ordered to be burned, chen and lily go in hiding and he studies for YEARS in the tiger claw style to try and beat pai mei, and he constanty refuses to implement her crane style. Even after he gets defeated by Pai Mei and is sent home a miserable loser he won't try her kung fu. But I guarantee you will see an ending that is sweet and overall great execution throughout the entire movie that will leave you with a smile on your face(especially if yu are a fan of li-li-li).

Also I didn't think that it deserved 5 stars I was stuck on a 4-4.5, but then the end came around.

Also sidenote from up at the top, this is uncut just like all red sun releases, so don't expect to see a scene cut-off and then reappear with lines on the screen and distortion because somebody finally decided to press the play button in a non-action scene.

3 out of 5 stars Good Film....but dont buy Red Sun version.......2007-06-20

Red Sun only sells bootleg dvds that are of very poor quality. I made the mistake of buying the Red Sun version, and it is horrible. It is not digitally remastered, the audio would go out in several places, and it would freeze and skip...and would often freeze up my dvd player in the process. The reviewer "morgoth" works for Red Sun and just spams reviews saying how great Red Sun is. Do yourself a favor and dont buy this dvd...you can easily find a real version elsewhere. Do other people a favor and spread the word about Red Sun...and vote NOT HELPFUL on all morgoth's reviews.

This is a great film, and I encourage you to buy a non-bootleg copy.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC DISCOVERED!!!.......2007-03-15

I have been a fan and collector of old skool kung fu flix since I was a kid. I thought I had seen all the good ones untill I discovered this gem. The fight coreoraphy is terrific, and the definate high point of the film is Lo Lehi's preformance as "Pai Mei". As a matter of personal preferance, I prefer a more serious and bloody story. This flix was a bit light hearted in tone for me, but I laughed out loud when Gordon Liu attacks Lo Lehi while he's relaxing in the bathtub. Overall this film is an old skool classic. Worth every penny of what you pay for it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best period..........2007-03-12

If you have not seen this yet, it is an absolute must for any fan of the genre. White Lotus priest Pei Mei is at his best, and Gordon Liu does not disappoint in his role... I also recommend Executioner from Shaolin which is the prequal to this awesome film...

1 out of 5 stars Great film, horrid DVD........2007-02-06

If you're looking for bootleg DVDs with bootleg "quality," here you go. Red Sun or whatever their name is, is a bootleg company that steals the image quality from Hong Kong DVDs and sells it as their own. They then put out crappy bootlegs like this here and have their stooges post how great they are so you buy their releases. The dvds are poor, have audio and image issues, and fall apart in a year or so. If that sounds "Great," "superior," etc. please feel free to buy this release. If not, get the actual releases from Hong Kong for cheaper prices and see something great.

4 out of 5 stars WHIE LOTUS PREIST steals the show!!!.......2007-02-01

Watch this movie for THE WHITE LOTUS PRIEST PAI MEI. The White Lotus Preist is one of the coolest characters you'll ever see in any kung fu movie , period. Although I enjoyed this kung fu movie, I've seen Gordon Liu in better roles. The White Lotus Preist fights Gordon Liu several times and each time spares G.L.'s life. I was very angry, because at the end when Gordon Liu finally is able to beat the White Lotus Preist he kills him and doesn't spare his life.

To bad you can only give 5 stars. This is an awesome Movie. Some of the scenes are excellent. Some sad parts and some good parts. Some shocking parts. I mean like some really wow parts. One guy is fighting ninjas under ground and gets stabbed from underneath. I mean like wow he steps on his own intestine! You have got to get this movie. If you don't have it GET IT! An amazing Movie. One of the best Shaw releases.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Martial Art Movie.......2006-06-13

This is an awesome movie. The fight scences are some of the best aever made, the costumes are great, and the use of weapons are really good. The basis of the movie is that the school of good guys (who wear white) has a tournement against the bad school (wears back) for control of the martial arts world. But when the bad guys lose, their hired killer throws the master of the good school his ring (which is poisonous) and tells him when he sees another ring like that that it will be his friend/master challenging him. So the master has his school practice and set up a defense system around their school. A few months down the line, they get a challenge from the killer's friend (the ninja school) to go against their 5 elements. So not knowing what they are up against, the good master sends most of his best warriors to see what the 5 elements are. And that's when all the action starts. Each element uses a unique style of fighting that will leave you awed. This movie is a great tale of revenge and regret. I think you'll really like it.

Parties are not always as fun as they look like they should be. The distinction lies in the realm between watching people have fun and actually having fun. Case in point: Groove. Set in San Francisco over the course of one night, this is the story of a rave, plain and simple. Preparation includes inhabiting an empty warehouse, finding the power supply, and sending out coded invitations. The movie kicks in as the party does, when people start arriving and the DJs start spinning. There's a nice moment early on when a cop shows up asking for the owner of the building, who is then taken on a tour of "a new Internet start-up." It becomes even funnier when the cop turns out to be smarter and more compassionate than anyone would expect. Writer-director Greg Harrison does a smart thing by focusing the story on David, a novice who's never been to a rave before, which breaks the story out of what could have been the suffocatingly insular world of rave culture. Unknowingly dosed by someone (his brother?), David is adopted by Layla, an attractive but lonely East Coast transplant who has begun to regret her party lifestyle. Other characters include a guy who's just proposed to his girlfriend, a college teaching assistant selling his own manufactured drugs, a nefarious lothario, a DJ who gets to meet his idol, and a gay couple having trouble finding the party. If the characters turn out to be just character types, that's OK because the movie itself floats by on its own high-octane enthusiasm. Groove is light and frothy entertainment with a beat you can dance to. --Andy Spletzer

4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2007-05-30

I got this movie as a gift for my B/F, it's one of his fav movies from his wild years. He was so happy about it. This movie is VERY VERY VERY hard to find. Great condiotion and made it on time for the holiday:)

1 out of 5 stars This deserves a minus - 10 rating........2006-08-05

I wish there was a - rating system, I would rate this at - 10 stars, the only good thing about this movie is John Digweed (he shows up at the end of the movie for 2 minutes) and Bedrocks Heaven Scent.

It was such a burden having to watch this whole movie, first of all the acting is horrible and waaaaaaay overdone; Pretentious is the word. The acting was like watching those kids candy commercials were there's all these skateboarders and "extreme" sports figures doing tricks to advertise the candy product. Then theres all these gay love scenes, of which I found very unnecessary. If this movie shows what the rave scene really is, I feel sorry for ravers, fortunately this is not what raving is all about.

This story shows a corporate-underground (hmmm those two words shouldnt be together, should they? Well they do in this movie) rave, you have the party planner sending e-mails to all these yuppys to let them know where the party is, then theres the "going to the party" thing, the wharehouse blah blah blah. Trying to look like a real rave, but the last I knew raves werent sponsored by Levis or Starbucks!!

Then you have all these horrible actors trying to act like there all high on ecstasy, they just over do it, its like watching your granny trying to act like she's drunk.

Then theirs the dj's who act like their mixing by grabbing records, putting them on the turntable and cranking up the crossfader, any dj knows its not that simple. I'm not trying to disrespect the dj's, I bet John Digweed did a tiny part in this movie because the he probably got ditched by a club owner that didnt pay him for a gig and he needed the money to get back home.

Part of the movie is about this "raver-couple" who met each other like 2 days ago and are getting married, their "love" being completely influenced after using ecstasy (the love drug) and the dudes brother who is a complete pretentious nerd. The raver dude all the sudden is kissing another dude who is supposed to be the official rave massage guy!! I mean WTF?!!! Then his brother (pret. nerd) gets a hold on some E, of course he's never done any kind of narcotics or substance before, and he starts tripping and turns into a complete fool, he meets a chick who is supposed to be a veteran raver and she tries to guide him around his trip, then at the party he invites everyone for breakfest at his house, of course that doesnt happen because he didnt really like the people, he was just E happy.

Thank God theres and end to the movie, and at the end you get to see Digweed playing heaven scent, thats the only good part of the movie and it lasts like 2 minutes.

Oh I forgto to mention the "police bust". The police arrive at the party and the party organizer talks his way and gets a sngle cop to leave without checking any paper work or permit for the party, then later on the copps arrive and shut the party down in a raid like fashion, but guess what? No one gets arrested and the sound equipment doesnt get confiscated, the cops just run in the warehouse and run everybody out. Of course the nature of this movie wouldnt just let the people go home and stop filming this atrocity, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, the people go back to the warehouse, break the police lock and continue the party from where they left off. Totally unreal.

The raver-couple chick see her boyfriend kissing the massage guy and runs to the bathroom to cry, her boyfriend follows her and tells her that he's not gay, and of course they get back together and go back dancing, then when the partys done the raver-couple dude sees the massage guy and tells him "I'm not gay" and the massage dude replies "Nah, me neither".

I hope you got an idea of how bad the movie is by this review, I got a headache writing it.

2 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-01-31

A typical teen/early-twenties movie juxtaposing moments of characters being fun slacker caricatures, and moments where their humanity comes through. It's not about the rave scene, that's just the setting. It's about people, and the people in this slow-paced movie aren't very interesting. Their emotional issues didn't engage my interest or sympathy, and the fun scenes didn't make me wish I was there. Movies that did the same thing better include Dazed And Confused, Suburbia, Spun, The Party Monster, Empire Records, and even Go.

3 out of 5 stars It's Okay, has flaws though..........2006-01-17

The thing this movie does right is throw a some what convincing party, and has a pretty good sound track(I wish the music in the movie was actually on the sound track-don't buy the soundtrack). However, they also make club goers out to be a bunch of mindless junkies. I was actually kind of embarassed to be grouped in to this catagory. I am a clubber/party goer, and we're not all drug abusing, candy sucking retards. Some of us(Most Of Us)are intelligent mature grown ups and enjoy the party for the music, not the next big high. Ya, the "E"tards are there too, but the majority of people you find at parties are cool down to earth grown-ups, the ones you see in groove are poser wannabes.

5 out of 5 stars Its not over until the last record spins.......2006-01-01

Amazing movie AND music ..... Great look into the rave scene one crazy night in San Fransisco leading to peoples lives being changed NO JOKE! the end of the film says it all TAKE SOME EXTACY AND GROOVE!!

5 out of 5 stars They did a better job then 5 Deadly Venoms.......2007-02-10

5 Stars one for each of the Venoms!
These guys really rock. They must have know the success of 5 was awesome because they took even better care and more time to get this Kung Fu stuff right. This is a must see. Even better then 5 Deadly venoms. I think everyone knows its not the original title. The venoms died in the last one. This one has some pretty amazing scenes in it. Just get this version. Its pretty good and clear. I don't know about the Hong Kong Celestial pictures and the rights. What I do know is that some company's sell this DVD here in the USA and its good that they do so we can enjoy it. I have seen bootleg dvds before and this sure don't look it to me. So enjoy and Kung Fu Rockem Sockem Get this DVD now!

3 out of 5 stars Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms..........2007-02-05

It doesn't compare to it's predecessor, but still, the Kung Fu action and storyline are decent. Three stars!

4 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC.......2006-03-02

This movie was great, I have this version and I found the picture quality just fine, not quite as good as my Master Killer series which is crystal clear(distributed by Red Sun, who I had never heard of). But the movie itself is just wonderful. If you don't know the story, I'll tell you real briefly. A guys son gets his hands chopped off at the start of the movie, after his son gros up and finally gets his iron hands, he, his dad, and his dad's sidekick go around crippling people for the fun of it. So that is why this movie is really called the crippled avengers. The only reason that I didn't give this movie 5 stars is that the fact that the fighting is really good acrobatic wise, but I just did't get a sense of realism. If it looked a little more real, I would consider it like a top 20 movie ever.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, buy the bootleg and zip your pie hole.......2006-01-07

This non-Celestial pictures DVD is the best!! I LOVE SUPPORTING LOW DOWN PIRATES looking to make a quick buck, or even a slow one for that matter. Quite frankly the savings are passed on to the customer and everyone wins. I would make this movie on my DVD burner at home and sell it for $3 on amazon if I could and I would even throw in bonus footage of myself in ninja gear rocking out to Holy Diver at the end of the movie for free.

The movie itself is a classic tale of a gang of crips getting together to beat up a kung-fu warlord with the stumps where there arms and legs used to be. The fact that iron appendeges are now attached to the stumps doesn't hurt either. The scene where Iron Legs tricks the invincible cape wearing guy to let him kick him in the stomach is unforgettable. The look on the caped man's face is priceless when he realizes he's fallen for the old "guy with iron legs, which are covered by normal shoes and pants, asks you for a kick in the stomach head start to the fight" routine.

Don't listen to any quality otakus who are complaining about the dvd quality. I found out some of them actually work for celestial and are just trying to get sales. In a private e-mail, one of them (I told him I wouldn't name names) admitted that celestial is actually run by funballs from Laos who have no respect for kung-fu's heritage. So you might as well get the bootleg and support the true asian artists out there trying to keep the kung-fu heritage alive. While your at it, include a cheese sandwich with your check if you mail in the payment, because those dudes are hungry.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this bootleg.......2005-07-04

This DVD is a poor quality bootleg. The U.S. title of this film is "Mortal Combat", but the original title is "Crippled Avengers". The title listed on Amazon was made up by the bootlegger to capitalize on the popularity of the "5 Deadly Venoms". A company called Celestial owns the worldwide copyright on ALL Shaw Brothers movies. Their digitally remastered DVD has been available for a couple of years, and puts this bootleg to shame. That catch is that you must purchase it from a Hong Kong based web site. Amazon is not allowed to sell it, so they have listed this bootleg. Find a Hong Kong based web site and purchase the official DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect by any means, but an enjoyable kung fu movie.......2006-09-13

Now the story is decent. I laughed a few times but the drama didn't exactly stick with me. Jet Li starts out the movie as a young kid who has just had his father murdered by an evil Manchu general or something and Jet has been injured fighting with him trying to save his dad. So the monks find him and care for him in the temple and against some of the monks better judgement they make Jet a monk. When these evil guys end up storming the temple, all of the training scenes are very worthwhile. It was not the most coherent of stories but it didn't need to be. Watching Jet doing his solo training was amazing. Drunken style gets pulled out and there are some really cool moves in this fights. They did make a few of the shots look supernatural but it is still pretty good for all of these peoples first movie ever. Jet has talked about before how there was no martial arts choreographer for this movie and how everyone had to provide input and come up with the fights themselves. Jet's sifu in this movie can also be seen as his master in shaolin tepmle 2 and Twin Warriors(aka Tai Chi Master). So don't buy this movie for a gripping story abotu teh Shaolin Temple btu buy it for the sweet martial arts being displayed in Jet Li's first ever movie.

1 out of 5 stars Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting.......2006-08-29

You've seen me complain about Westerners who portray the Chinese solely as stick figures and stereotypes. But guess what? Some Chinese are equally guilty of this crime. Including those behind this modern film.

Three outsiders kneel outside the temple for five days. One "must become Shaolin to have his revenge," which we know is wrong, and he will pay a heavy price. The temple has never let in outsiders, but finally the Grand Master ends his lengthy meditation and decides they must, lest they perish. So we get three new Shaolin kids with awesome sideburns. I think Chinese films mirror American films in this respect. Sideburns are naughty. Just ask Elvis. Thank you very much.

Meanwhile some soldiers come to the temple. They need help repelling those nasty Qing conquerors, which sounds like something I read somewhere. They're allowed in immediately, whereas those other guys who'd been kneeling for three days are not.

It's a test of their dedication. Well, 20 minutes of stereotypes, over-the-top unfunny physical humor, and babbling lunacy tested my dedication, and I failed. I didn't watch the whole DVD.

In minute 20, two guys demonstrated the five styles, same as the very first episode of KUNG FU, the TV series, that's about 25 years older, and which is itself far from original in this respect. Fine wushu, but this isn't new. Next, a bit of sparring. Admonishments not to be lazy. Old guy breaking firewood with his bare hands to overblown brass music. Oooooh.

I can predict the rest. We'll have a big fight, some guys will mature, some guys will die, and good will triumph. Or not. Nobody cares. I'm stopping now. We found this in the flat when we moved in, it's 120 minutes, I watched 23, life's short. Zaijian.

P.S. I just learned there is a sequel. Huh?

5 out of 5 stars ALL HAIL THE CRIPPLES!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27

chang cheh does it too me again. he leaves you craving for more this time after making david chiang and ti lung into international superstars he does with group of guys from a opera school in taiwan, a chinese muscleman, and a hun gar stylist from china. im talking about the ever so dynamic kuo chui, lu feng, chiang sheng and the muscle bounded supposedly mantisfist expert in lo mang and a hun gar stylist wei pai (who didnt appear in this movie). after making such classics as "the one armed swordsman", "the water margin", "5 masters of shaolin", and "the 5 deadly venoms" chang cheh takes a new approach in the latter part in the 1970's and into the 1980's. after his top notch choreographer lau kar leung became a reknowned director in the mid 70's he took a gamble with a young dynamic and taiwan opera school weapons specialist robert tai aka tai chi hsien aka gangly who also went to the same school with kuo chui, lu feng, chiang sheng, angela mao ying, judy lee, james tien, jack long, and chang yi. and man did robert tai bring a new dimension to fight choreogrpahy to the genre and he is one of the best fight directors ever but he doesnt get the credit he deserves. he definitley top 5 and all the fight scenes hes done for the venoms mob has been nothing short of superb and spectacular.so after he did naval commandos or so he became chang cheh and the venoms chief fight choreographer. this movie should be viewed by children just like the one armed swordsman because it teaches us the value of having a disability and turning it into our greatest strength instead wallowing in self-pity and frustration. this film stars one of my favorite actors chen kuan tai aka the original iron monkey as yes folks the LEAD VILLAIN which he has never played before this role and lu feng as his son and the crippled avengers are kuo chui (blind), lo mang (deaf and mute), sun shein (legless) and chiang sheng (dumb)and the all seek out chiang sheng's master because he was once a master swordsman and the others never learned any kung fu. wang lung wei as chen kuan tai's bodyguard and dick wei as a general out to kill chen's character. of course in the venom films dick wei lasts 30 seconds which is transcondescending of his talents but anyway he kills helen poon bing sung chen's wife and chops off his son's arms. the training scenes and fight scenes is like i said top notch and a great inspiring story as well this version the red sun is a definite pick up and also try to find the celestial pictures release as well.

4 out of 5 stars my youth in these venoms movies.......2007-02-11

ever since i was about fifteen, and first saw "five deadly venoms", i was hook on whatever movie the "venoms" was in , and "the crippled avengers" was one of those movies...it brought out the almost comedic side of 'toad" and the usual comedic side of "young lizard", my best part is when young lizard was looking for one of his partner at the bad guy house and went in demanding to be heard and feared, when the boss man looked at one of his coharts and said, "who is this idiot?" which in his facial expressions really define the next move, and that was to make him an idiot. that scene was hilarious, outside of the extreme talents of the venomes moves and strength, it is one of my favorite venoms movies...and i hope you would add it to yours.... the unfortunate, ever since i saw my first venoms movie, i rate all other kung fu movies to the expert fighting sequences of most of the venoms...and outside of gordon liu, and of course , bruce lee. no other kung fu flick compares to a venoms movie, even an so-so venoms movie, and i will put a centipede five finger palm strike hold on anyone who says different!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-07-01

This is a unique movie. It starts off with a very serious Lily Li getting a message in her thoughts that only 6 out of her 7 sons will return from a battle with some Mongolians. Instead, only brother #6 returns (Alexander Fu Sheng). He comes back insane after seeing all of his brothers die. It was a bit disturbing for me as well. Hsiao Ho, Lau Kar Wing, Wong Yue and 2 other Yang brothers all bite the dust before the movie ever really starts. Luckily, Yang #5 (Gordon Liu) makes it out alive and goes to study at Shaolin Temple. That is all I will tell about the story, you just have to experience it for yourself. A true Shaw Brothers classic. The use of sets only may turn some people off, but they are beautiful sets and any Shaws fan will not have a problem with this. Also, if you love hand to hand, there is a slight chance you will not like this wonderful movie. It is all pole fighting, no hand to hand. Only get this if you want to see some of the best stick work ever. Even Lily Li gets about 2 minutes to show off. And just like a lot of Lau kar Leung's other films, this is a true Shaolin movie, and the Shaolin pole techniques are on full display. Their skills in pole fighting are a big reason why the Emperor favored them and why Shaolin became what it is today.

If you are a fan of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, you may like this movie even more. Not as many training scenes, but some awesome Gordon Liu action.

You need good villains in kung fu movies and luckily Johnny Wang Lung Wei is in this. The other 2 main baddies are acceptable. Philip Kao Fei also stars in a very memorable role as the head abbot.

Even though this movie had to be drasticly changed because of Fu Sheng's death during the time of filming, it is amazingly still a masterpiece in just about every way.

Another one of the last Shaw films, and another one of the very best. Sad to see they had to close up when they had all of these megastars on hand to make great movies like this.

One more note- I was not expecting this high of a death total in a Lau Kar Leung movie. He usually stays away from the violence. Well, "usually" is the key word here because I counted well over a 100 total deaths (you have to watch very close). The poles get very bloody. :)

Another masterpiece from Master Lau. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this.

    4.5/5

5 out of 5 stars One of Gordon Liu's Best!.......2007-06-27

I would have to say without a doubt this has got to be one of Gordon Liu's best performances. He is young, and extremely fast in this movie. Wonderful Choreography and full of action. The Plot was good, and the story line a slight confusion but all in all Magnificent. The coffin Fight Yes I said "Coffin fight" alone to save his sister was amazing. Get this one Everyone this is Awesome!

    Sifu Monroe

4 out of 5 stars The Invincible Pole Fighter is Invincible.......2007-02-09

This movie was fantastic. I am a person who was not allowed to watch a lot of kung fu movies, and fighting as a kid but I am diving head first back into this fun realm.

The movie starts and ends with action, has a fantastic plot, and has fairly believable acting throughout. Gordon Liu (Brother #5) was excellent as a young warrior that had to swallow his pride, and instincts of revenge long enough to attack in the end. The only reasons why it was not a five-star movie was because the other brothers who got ambushed and killed were on so briefly, that their actual number of birth did not even matter. In addition, it was hard to figure out who was good, and evil but at the same time that part was a strength of the movie. A major reason for this was because the Yang family was well known throughout the area as upholders of the law, but the evil general was trying to kill all of the brothers, and end their faithful rebellious following. In reality he had them set up, and then tried to find the remaining two brothers and charge them for treason.
Good questions to ask yourself when watching this movie are:

If the head monk of the Buddhist temple was such a great fighter, then why would a Mongel ambush pose even the smallest threat?

If Brother #5 knew that the anti-pole weapons used by the general's men were what killed his brothers, then why did he not train to nullify their ability?

Why did Brother #4 really go crazy, and how were they going to have him cured?

This is a must have movie with actors that are in many of the good Shaw Brothers/ Wu-Tang/ Shaolin movies. The fighting skills were very good, and there wasn't much use of the "fake receeding hairline shoguns" of other movies which mostly has you laughing instead of paying attention to the plot.
