Jump roping that's worlds away from anything seen on the local playground bursts from the screen in this Disney Original Movie about the clash between two athletes and their respective sports. Boxer Izzy Daniels (Corbin Bleu) has a hard time taking neighbor Mary's (Keke Palmer) devotion to jump roping seriously, but as Izzy trains relentlessly to maintain his undefeated status and win the Golden Glove, Mary's team practices just as intensely for the city Double Dutch finals. Izzy gains a reluctant respect for Mary's sport when he accompanies his sister Karin (Kylee Russell) to a competition, but it takes some serious convincing to persuade him to fill in for a teammate who's abandon the team on the cusp of city finals. Izzy quickly discovers that Double Dutch is more demanding and rewarding than he'd ever imagined, but when the entire school finds out about his newest sporting exploit, he's taunted into quitting. As Izzy tries to regain his boxing focus, he suddenly realizes that winning the Golden Glove is more his father's (David Reivers) dream than his own. After some serious soul-searching, Izzy decides that he can't let what others think keep him from doing what makes him happy. This action-packed Disney Channel Original Movie takes a unique look at the varied world of sports and features some great catchy new music from Corbin Bleu and Jordan Pruitt, but the game-winner is its focus on the importance of following one's heart. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Fast Food for the Soul.......2007-06-01
This DVD was a gift for my wife, who is one of the "Jump In" fans in this house. I don't have quite the enthusiasm for this movie that they do, which leads me to believe that it is something of a "chick flick."
A tight plot, engaging characters, and quick pace put this show several notches above "viewable."
I enjoyed the story of a boy learning how to deal with conflicting demands and responsibilities.
The jump-rope contest choreography is impressive, and helps make this DVD a good buy, although sports purists might question the fusion of jump-rope tricks and boxing in another scene.
Disney Studios seems to be re-discovering the bourgeois inhibitions that made it a global success, so those who require relevance, naughty words, and people with the self-control of an ADHD tomcat in their entertainment will be sorely disappointed in "Jump In." Aside from these deficiencies, this is a highly entertaining musical.
I love this dvd .......2007-05-19
This dvd is awesome and the bonus stuff is just great .
Another great family film starring Keke Palmer.......2007-05-17
I bought this because of child actor Keke Palmer appears in it and I was not disappointed. It's such a fun film with cute actors, lots of incredible double dutch scenes and a great tutorial offered in the special effects section. It's a must have!
OUTSTANDING.......2007-05-15
We are from South Africa, and the movie only came on our disney channel after we got the DVD, so my kids were pretty happ with themselves. It was a really nice movie, it was heartwarming, and i found it very touching. We even shed a few tears!!!My kids now want to do Double Dutch!!!
fun family movie.......2007-05-12
This movie won't win any oscars, but it's great for what it is, a great family film. It's so hard to find movies that all of my children (ages 2-10) will sit down and watch and that WE feel good about them watching. This is one of those movies. Made in the same mold as High School Musical, I hope Disney continues to pump out these type of movies. They're slightly cheesy, but a refreshing change from many movies marketed today for kids.

Based on the bestseller by Mitch Albom (Tuesdays With Morrie), The Five People You Meet in Heaven takes up where It's A Wonderful Life left off. In the Capra classic, George Bailey gets a vision of life without him. In this Hallmark Hall of Fame production, Eddie (Jon Voight), an amusement park maintenance man and war veteran, ends up in Heaven after an accident takes his life. There he meets five people from his past: the Blue Man (Jeff Richards), the Captain (Michael Imperioli), Marguerite (Dagmara Dominczyk), Ruby (Ellen Burstyn), and Tala (Nicaela and Shelbie Weigel). Each shows him how he impacted their life or they his--and not always for the better. (In these flashbacks, Callahan Brebner and Steven Grayhm play the young Eddie.) The point may seem simplistic--everyone is connected--but The Five People You Meet in Heaven finds a unique and engaging way to make it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Moving movie.......2007-07-05
I throughly enjoyed this movie its very moving and gives you a new perspective on heaven. I highly recommend this movie you will love it.
An Amazing movie.......2007-06-24
I thought this was such a beautiful film about life, love, and loss. It really made me cry, especially the part where Eddie sees his wife again and she says "Life has to end, Eddie. Love doesn't." And that even in heaven she still loved him and she still felt his love for her. Eddie is a old man who fixes amusment park rides. he feels his life is worthless. until he dies and finds out in heaven through meeting five different people who each had an inpact upon his life that his life was meaningful and that where he was in life was where he was supposed to be all long. it shows that even if you aren't famous, gorgeous, or rich your life is still worth something and each life is important and that the whole human race is conncected. As the Blue Man says: "Strangers are family we have yet to come to know." I mean, it's just such a beautiful movie and story and so powerful and timeless and I think it will touch viewers and readers of all ages. It's spiritual, meaningful, and gorgeous. I think probably every human being thinks that his or her life was worthless just because they weren't famous celebrities or something. But the truth is that every life is worth something, just like the old man Eddie did. He had touched so many lives and he never knew that until he died.
heavenly.......2007-05-31
interesting, thought provoking, less saccharine than I would have presumed and delightfully diverse in characterisation. It is about chance, about ho wlives are so inextricably entwined that we can have life changing events happen to other people due to our actions yet we can and do never know about them. It's a book about maturity, yes of life and death, but also about finding meaning and reason for being human at all. And if it's not to your taste it's still a nice visual few hours anyway.
Anything New?.......2007-05-21
Heaven Schmeaven. It's all the same. The story begins with the death of eighty three year old Eddie "Maintenance," when an amusement park ride goes wrong. From the start of the tale, Eddie's character is rather mysterious; the reader only learns that he is a hardworking, modest man, who dearly loves his wife, Marguerite, and thinks his job as "the ride man" at Ruby Pier is worthless. The seemingly ordinary story suddenly takes a sharp turn into a poor attempt to fantasy writing. Eddie magically flies through multiple color-changing skies- or supposedly, he is on his way to heaven. His well-guarded character then begins to reveal itself as he gains insight of his life in a journey through heaven. He learns how his actions affect and alter many other lives, just as the five people he meets affected his...
Sound familiar? First off, the whole flying ordeal is unreal. Yes, it is dealing with heaven, and heaven is considered a supernatural place where anything can happen, but come on. The events that occur in this novel are too far-fetched and unrealistic to be mere coincidences or an illustration of how our lives are connected. This leads me to another shortcoming. The underlying message of the novel is overused. Unoriginal. Trite. The lesson taught by this fable deals with the common idea that we are all connected in some way. All our actions affect others. They alter, set up, or have indirect influences upon other lives. Albom might as well transcribe the storylines of the movie "Crash" or the television show "Six Degrees," both of which revolve around the same theme, and call it The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Overall, the novel is just too predictable.
The unrealistic nature of the novel makes it seem like Albom worked too hard to make his point. For example, the first person Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. The Blue Man is a man (obviously) who also worked at Ruby Pier in the freak shows for his blue skin. His relation to Eddie's life is revealed through a story about a little boy who threw a ball too far across the street. The little boy and his brother run across the street to get it. They meet an incredibly obese woman and an incredibly hairy man from the freak show. They run away, scared. Now apparently, according to Blue Man, the little boy did not see a car that was coming his way. The man behind the wheel slams on the brakes and "somehow regains control," just like that. The car rolls on, but... Oh no! The adrenaline rush from the near-tragedy makes the man feel so dizzy that his "head drops momentarily" but somehow within that moment, he collides into a parked truck. He's bleeding, he's dizzy, and then he has a heart attack. He dies. Then Albom has Blue Man end his story by calling Eddie "little boy," revealing the unpredictable and unforeseen truth that Eddie was the little boy! Wow, didn't see that coming!
First, the chain of events is very unlikely. Second, the chain of events is very unsurprising. What's expected of a novel with an overplayed underlying message? The story tries too hard to evoke emotions or "pull at the heartstrings," and to elicit the notion that we are all connected to the point that it seems unreal. The trite idea is boring, and makes the storyline way too predictable.
--H. Choi

This true story of the black flyers who broke the color barrier in the U.S. Air Force during World War II is a well-intentioned film highlighted by an excellent cast. Proud, solemn, Iowa-born Laurence Fishburne and city-kid hipster Cuba Gooding Jr. are among the hopefuls who meet en route to Tuskegee Air Force Base, where they are among the recruits for an "experimental" program to "prove" the abilities of the black man in the U.S. armed services. Fighting prejudice from racist officers and government officials and held to a consistently higher level of performance than their white counterparts, these men prove themselves in training and in combat, many of them dying for their country in the process. Andre Braugher costars as a West Point graduate who takes charge of the unit in Africa and in Italy (where it's christened the 332nd). The film is rousing, if slow starting and episodic, but it's periodically grounded by a host of war movie clichés, notably the calculated demise of practically every trainee introduced in the opening scenes (ironic given the 332nd's real-life combat record--high casualties for the enemy, low casualties among themselves, and no losses among the bombers they escorted). Ultimately the Emmy-nominated performances by moral backbone Fishburne and the dedicated Braugher and the energy and cocky confidence of Gooding give their battles both on and off the battlefield the sweet taste of victory. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Featuring an all-star cast headed by Laurence Fishburne, fireballs of high speed air action explode off the screen in this exciting story of the "Fighting 99th," the first squadron of black American pilots to be allowed to fight for their country. Based on the true story.

Military film.......2007-05-14
Great flic. Some liberties taken with regard to the Tuskeegee situation, but overall gives a fair representation of the attitudes of the time. Good action scenes, with a very good performance by Fishburne. Highly recommend the film.
Well worth it.......2007-05-07
My father was one of the men who were depicted in this movie. I thought it was well worth watching, it will be a legacy to pass on to my children, thanks to the well acted script.
black saviors.......2007-05-07
this is one of those movies everyone should own. this movie depicts how the african american group of soldiers played a major role in winning parts of a war when african americans were not even considered to be real soldiers in the american armed forces.
WONDERFUL!.......2007-04-18
I'm a huge mark for History movies, so it was quite a shock that I'd never heard of this movie before seeing it on cable TV for the first time. Now I'm bordering on obsessed. It's a good thing I can watch it anytime I want.
The real story of colored men and their contributions to World War 2. Their triumphs, tragedies and all the obstacles they overcame to contribute to America's victory in the Great War. It's clear to anyone who studies history that the valiant contribution of these brave men could have literally spelled the difference between victory and defeat. Their bravery in the face of adversity ON THEIR OWN HOME SOIL hardened them... battle-readied them... in a way that no white flyer could say he was hardened.
Men boarded those planes to fly off to battle... heroes landed the planes, returning from the mission.
Truly one of the best WWII films out there!.......2007-04-16
One of the most underated, action filled, educational and entertaining films from World War II out there!

Rodgers and Hammerstein's glorious score for South Pacific gets a surge of welcome new energy in this 2005 Carnegie Hall concert. Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me Kate, Ragtime) is in spectacular voice singing "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," but the real discovery is country star Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush. McEntire won raves when she replaced Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun, but her performance was never recorded and released to the general public. Now we can understand the raves for ourselves, because McEntire is a joy in the role that features such standards as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." Those used to Mary Martin (which is nearly everybody) will need to get used to McEntire's scoops and twang, but it's not inappropriate for a character hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas.
Jason Danieley (The Full Monty) and Lillias White are both effective as Lieutenant Cable and Bloody Mary, respectively, and Alec Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself any more than he's supposed to as Billis. Because it's a concert performance, the singers carry books and don't wear costumes other than in "Honey Bun" (so the nurses jog in the surf and wash their hair wearing black gowns). But much of the story is conveyed through dialogue excerpts, so the 113-minute DVD is substantially longer than the 78-minute CD. --David Horiuchi
Description
Broadway, like everyone, loves Reba McEntire. The redheaded Oklahoma firebrand took on the one-night-only concert role of Nellie Forbush on June 9, 2005the role Mary Martin immortalized in the 1949 Rodgers & Hammerstein classic South Pacificand the rialto's toughest critics, led by The New York Times' Ben Brantley, instantly surrendered. "Open-voiced and open-faced, she was born to play Nellie," Brantley wrote of the Carnegie Hall benefit performance, adding that the entire production was performed "in a state of nearly unconditional rapture. It was one of those nights when cynicism didn't stand a chance." Happily that enchanted evening can be shared with fans everywhere when "SOUTH PACIFIC" IN CONCERT FROM CARNEGIE HALL comes to DVD. Completing the luxury casting are Broadway and Hollywood icons Brian Stokes Mitchell and Alec Baldwin, as, respectively, French planter Emile de Becque and wise guy sailor Luther Billis. The performance also aired on Thirteen/WNE! T New York's GREAT PERFORMANCES on PBS in April/May.
Customer Reviews:
Reba is absolutely astonishing!.......2007-04-29
Reba definitely has a new calling in Broadway musicals! I didn't see her performance in "Annie, Get Your Gun," although I heard she was magnificient. In this special one night "South Pacific" debut seen on PBS at Carnegie Hall in 2006, the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set in WWII, she absolutely knocks off your socks!
Not only is she stunning as Nellie the nurse, she makes you believe she really is that character. Her singing and acting are flawless and outstanding! I have the anniversary editon of the R&H musical classic of "South Pacific," which is great, but this version with Reba and Brain Stokes Mitchell is unbelievably even better! Even Alec Baldwin as "Luther Billis" does an outstanding performance, even with his one slip up that I and the audience certainly enjoyed. Certainly, Lilias White as "Bloody Mary" and Jason Danielly as "Joe Cable" have trememdous voices as well.
However, there is no scenery as the entire musical was done on stage with the Orchestra of St. Lukes, which in itself was simply outstanding. So if you liked the musical without scenery, you'll love this rendition with great performances by all the actors including the two wonderful kids!
South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall.......2007-03-30
This is a fantastic DVD - a powerful performance by all performers. Brian Stokes Mitchell has an incredible voice and is a great actor. His "This Nearly Was Mine" was awesome! Reba McEntire was fabulous. She made Nellie Forbush very believable. Her "Honey Bun" was especially great. Lillias White was all you could ask for as Bloody Mary. She has a powerful voice. I have singled out three of the preformers, but all the rest were just as impressive. The best way to appreciate this performance is to watch it many times...as I have done!!
Wowzer.......2007-03-19
Just caught this performance on PBS and it is superb:
-the "in concert" format with just a minimal amount of acting and costumes, and without the distraction of stage scenery or props, helps you focus on not only the quality of the performances but the historically set, yet timeless, nature of the music and lyrics of Rodgers & Hammerstein.
-You coudn't pick a better Nelly Forbush. Since Reba is restricted by the "in concert" format, she is not allowed to engage in a broadway stage performance like Mary Martin did. But the clear delivery and emotional strength of her singing gave me a deep, deep sense she eclipsed that historic performance in a single outing. Such marvelous broadway musical singing coming from a country singer...who woulda thunk it. I was also touched by what were real tears being shed by Reba at the end. Wow.
-Ditto for Brian Stokes Mitchell's deep, rich baritone as Emile. Like Reba, his voice outdoes the recorded performance of Enzo Pinza, something I didn't think was possible. As someone on IMDB said, his rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" was so true you thought his heart was really broken by Nellie's rejection.
Don't believe me?
As Mage said on the old Palmolive TV commerical "Try it. You'll like it."
Excellent show.......2007-01-20
I first saw this show on a PBS TV show. It was so good that I had to find a copy of the DVD so I could watch again and again.
"South Pacific".......2007-01-19
This is as good a production of "South Pacific" as you could hope to see and hear. The cast is just about perfect and everyone from the biggest star to the smallest cast member performs flawlessly. The orchestra is big and luscious and all the voices are strong and well cast. Reba McEntire is a delightfully spunky Nellie, Alec Baldwin genuinely funny as a big bruiser of a Billis, and Brian Stokes Mitchell brings just the right dignity to Emile and justly had the audience explode into applause at the end of a truly extraordinary rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine".
One would think that one would miss the scenery for a show such as this, but curiously enough I found this concert version with a minimum of props, and only suggested costuming works even better than the lavish film version, in that one's imagination is far more engaged.
I cannot recommend this performance and the surround sound DVD highly enough.

As a pop star on the comeback trail, Bill Nighy handily stole Love Actually away from his more famous co-stars. In BBC/HBO co-production The Girl in the Café, he takes the lead--and runs with it. Written by Richard Curtis (Notting Hill), the offbeat political-romance concerns Lawrence, a 57-year-old Londoner with a successful governmental career and nonexistent social life. One day he stops in a café and meets the mysterious, considerably younger Gina (Kelly Macdonald, Trainspotting). To their mutual amazement, they hit it off and agree to meet again (and yet again). Then he invites her to accompany him to the G8 Summit in Reykjavík, where she upends his carefully ordered world in ways both wonderful and terrible. Suddenly this "man who has nothing in his life but his work" must find a way to make room for something "tender and true." With Corin Redgrave as the Prime Minister. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
He's a shy civil servant (Bill Nighy, Love Actually) working for the British delegation to the 2005 G8 Summit. She's an alluring young woman (Kelly McDonald, Finding Neverland) he meets at a cafe - and invites her to the Summit on a whim. Together, this unlikely couple might just change history.

Perfect Casting - Heavy and Important Message.......2007-06-24
I think DEFINITELY we can immediately end poverty in Africa and elsewhere if we all quit wasting money in richer countries like ours.
If more of us got one less nose job and drove used sedans instead of Jaguars we could give that money (energy) to the poor people there will be no more needless suffering.
This is a movie about the United Nation but we don't need the U.N. to do this. As portrayed in the movie they are very slow and beurocratic, therefore I find them frustrating. . . though there are some people in it who really want to serve the world well, like the main character.
Anyway, this movie opened my eyes by saying - "Hey, you don't need to be a Government big shot to make a heartfelt difference in the world. You can be just a Girl in the Cafe. If this is your mission, and I believe it should be everybody's mission, then where there is a will where is a way.
To sum up, this movie helped me relate and feel something in my heart because of the wonderful casting and the story-telling. I think it's very well done. I only gave it 4 stars because it's not the kind of movie I would watch over and over.
I am sending my money to Africa and getting involved physically when I sign off here. Peace & love. . .
Brain dead.......2007-06-08
If you believe that the West, and in particular the United States, is responsible for all the sickness and poverty in the world this movie is for you. It starts out as a sweet May-December romance but mid-way through turns into a whiny diatribe. At a G8 summit in Reykjavik the "heroine" attacks the Western leaders at a formal dinner for not giving more money to the world's developing countries. She doesn't really seem to want workable solutions to the problems of disease and poverty; she just wants more money be thrown at them. And it's strange that this wonderful, caring, considerate woman doesn't seem to give a second thought to the fact that she is ruining the career of the man she claims to care for by issuing her rant to his bosses. People with a simplistic approach to solving the world's problems will love this movie. People with a brain won't.
Political Message from Richard Curtis & Company.......2007-05-03
Mr. Curtis has become famous for his somewhat sacchrine sweet scripts involving the socially inept, well-bred, public school-educated Englishman with a wry sense of humor. In this respect "The Girl in the Cafe" stays true to form. However love & romance, though significant, take a back-seat to the G-8 Summit and the devestating poverty that engulfs and kills people with each tick of the clock. Some very heady stuff indeed, especially considering this is the team who brought us "Four Weddings & A Funeral", "Notting Hill", "Love Actually". Do they succeed in delivering the famous talmudic message "If not now; when"? Well, yes and no.
The U.S. delegates appear heartless for wanting to tackle the underlying causes of poverty in lieu of giving direct aid to the billions of starving children in Africa. The U.K. delegates are stereotypical well-mannered (while seething inside) and morally compromised. I found this aspect of the film, simplistic, silly and insulting.
However, the casting people certainly deserve an award for this pitch-perfect ensemble cast. The acting is all top notch. Substituing for that floppy-haired charmer, Hugh Grant, is the utterly loveable Bill Nighy. Mr. Nighy's scarecrow physique, & craggy facial features are just right for the shy civil servant newly besotted with the mysterious sad girl in the title, played by Kelly MacDonald. Mr. Nighy's best lines are deliverd almost sotto voce and his mannerisms clearly show a man uncomfortable in his own skin. Their delightful banter shows just how skilled Ms. MacDonald is, as she does not become lost in the company of the brilliant Mr. Nighy. Corin Redgrave, in a virtual cameo, is perfect as the British PM.
"The Girl in the Cafe" is all dialogue. The challenge for the filmmaker to hold the viewer rests solidly on the writing and the acting. Fortunately they succeed due to the talent of Mr. Curtis and the cast.
Girl in the Cafe - a story for today's world.......2007-04-06
A pertinent and very relevant story - the message is a matter of ethics and morality in respect of the obligations of developed nations to those less fortunate and in need.
And do the international organisations fulfil their purpose and role with ethics and reality?
A Sad Misstep.......2007-03-22
Richard Curtis has always been one to take chances, often to good effect, occasionally to nervous titters. One can see his hand in the dialog and the characters, but this does not hit the mark Mr. Curtis has set for himself with work like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually. Bitten by the political bug, the propaganda point he uses British taxpayers' BBC money to argue is that AIDS, starvation, and infant death, especially in Africa, is susceptible to remedy by massive spending by the G8 Nations. The magic wand of sufficient G8 currency will end mortal suffering. (How many billions in G8 aid has been diverted for the profit of rogue governments, warlords, insurgents, and terrorists just in the last decade? They are worthy of no mention. Mr. Curtis has not noticed. Even the huge issue of run-of-the-mill Third World corruption in the better instances is beyond the vision. The problem is those stingy, compromising G8 members his "strong woman" chastises, not the murderous thieves licking their chops as she bargains for their next round of loot.)
The pacing is languid. There is material enough here to make one of the many story arcs from Love Actually, padded with many, many bleak silent moments. The love story is a not very compelling April/October match. Mr. Curtis is incapable of creating a story without touches of endearing humanity, but here that only gets me to that second star.
Tossed off without examination is the fact that one of the British G8 negotiators has lost a child. How? The point being attempted appears to be the preciousness of the child and the pain of the loss, but the point that children die in G8 countries in the families of the elite leadership as well is inescapable.
Finally, the film shows a special disdain for positions taken by the fictitious US delegation that could be interpreted as a concern for and need to transform the realities on the ground. The rolling of eyes cuts off any chance to engage real issues. Such talk is just one more roadblock to Mr. Curtis' global utopia. There is also no credit given to the real American story. George Bush has been lauded by none other than Bono for tripling aid to Africa during his term. Even this shining star of historically unparalleled generosity is not worthy of mention for Mr. Curtis.

a keeper.......2007-06-17
This type of story is a difficult one to pull off, but this movie does it. Not a dull moment. Things keep changing all the time. The emotional tension remains tight all the way through, yet the movie never becomes oppressive. There are a number of relieving moments of achievement, of aid from other people, of being befriended by strangers. The characters, especially the father, are all realistic. No stereotypes here. The father is a real horror. Unfortunately, such people are not only real but not uncommon.
Rick Shroeder does an excellent job with the acting and with the Georgia accent. Not a trace of his natural southern California accent comes through in any of the scenes.
Good movie for the whole family. Worth watching again.
Two thumbs up!.......2007-05-07
WONDERFUL movie starring Ricky Shroeder about an older brother trying desperately to hold his siblings together as a family, despite an alcoholic father who tries to defeat him at every turn, and greedy people who try to take advantage of his good fortune when things start to turn around. Ricky portrays an older teen with just the right mix of confidence, confusion, exhaustion and frustration. He definitely makes you believe in the character.
A Son's Promise .......2004-12-17
This is story is such a touching and very loving story. I would recommend this story to all my friends.

A clear-eyed look at the Rwandan genocide is offered in Sometimes in April, a frank take on the 1994 slaughter that claimed upwards of 800,000 lives. Some overlap with Hotel Rwanda is inevitable, and this HBO feature does have similarities, but without the strong suspenseful storyline of Hotel. Its protagonist (the strong Idris Elba, from The Wire) pieces together the past tragedy from the perspective of a decade-later war-crimes tribunal, where his brother is on trial. It's hard to know which is less bearable--the depiction of atrocities, such as mass murder at a girls school, or the second-guessing of the international community, which largely stood by while the horror was unfolding. (Like Hotel Rwanda, this film zeroes in on the U.S. government's distinction that "acts of genocide" occurred in Rwanda rather than "genocide," a Joseph Heller-like absurdity.) The plain style of director Raoul Peck, shooting on location in Rwanda, works for the subject; his film Lumumba was also a direct, blunt account of a tragedy in Africa. The approach doesn't work as well in the U.S. scenes, which feature Debra Winger as a concerned official; these just look clumsy. But the subject itself remains worthy of close attention. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Beats the pants of Hotel Rwanda.......2007-06-16
Hotel Rwanda leaves you feeling upbeat, like "Thank god, someone did something." This movie makes you feel like shit. You end up disgusted with humanity. It is realistic, and there is no bright spot at the end of the tunnel.
Stunning and heartbreaking African genocide in 1994.......2007-05-22
Anyone who saw Hotel Rwanda may also wish to see this well directed movie
about the gripping Rwandan conflict in 1994. This is a story of two brothers whose political standing became divided by the genocide which engulfed the nation into a chaotic nightmare, a small but beautiful African nation unjustly abandoned by the international community. The movie depicts a genocide which consists of an organized attempt by the Hutu majority to exterminate the minority Tutsis. Not by gassing as the Final Solution applied to Europe's Jews in World War II, but by bullets, clubs and, of all gory ways that could be thought of by the human mind, machetes imported from China. Moderate Hutus(Hutus against the horrible persecutiuon) as well as heroic Hutus who risked and gave their lives to defend their Tutsi neighbors and friends were also targeted for murder. The lot more easier to identify Tutsis ,thanks to the Belgian Colonists who issued Identity Cards to distinguish Tutsis from Hutus during those colonial times. The admissions of guilt, the confessions, remorse and pleas for forgiveness can not make up for the senseless slaughter of loved ones as experienced by the protagonists in this movie although they are trying their best to forgive and start a new life. However, those memories will linger for the rest of their lives. Rwanda in 1994 has shown the world that without any genuine and effective effort of control nationally and internationally, genocide can still haunt this planet we live in.
We must learn from this!!!.......2007-05-09
"Sometimes in April" is a difficult, often disturbing movie to watch, but one I think is important to see.
Shot in a semi documentary mode largely on location in Rwanda, with lots of flashbacks from the present, it tells the story of the attempt to systematically wipe out the Tutsi minority (referred to as cockroaches) by the Hutu Majority.
After first giving the viewer a synopsis on the genesis of the bad blood between the two tribes from the days under Belgian colonial rule, the movie settles into the story of two brothers, Augustine (a soldier in the army) and Honore Muganza (a radio presenter; excellent performances from both actors, as well as the entire cast which was comprised largely or Rwandans), as tensions rise in the country, cumulating in the shooting down of the president's plane which serves as the spark for the massacres to commence.
It is heartbreaking watching former neighbours and friends turning on one another with machetes, clubs and guns, all because one is from the `wrong' tribe, the death of Kurt Cobain getting more airtime, and foreign governments debating whether `acts of genocide, or an act of genocide' is taking place, while an estimated million people were killed over a period of a hundred days.
Much more graphic than "Hotel Rwanda", where the viewers were largely insulated from the savagery going on outside the hotel walls, it was important that this tale be told, and mankind, hopefully learn from this, and while ensuring such a thing never happens again, also realize that every human life is worth something, regardless of whether oil runs beneath your feet or not.
Amazing movie about the Rwandan genocide.......2007-01-11
Hotel Rwanda is the movie we all know about but this one is well worth watching if you have any interest in Rwanda or genocide and its devastating impact on lives.
scar against humanity.......2006-07-26
It's shocking the extent of indifference in our country to situations in nations that don't rest on our borders or house our greed-feeding resources. The Rwandan genocide of 1994, the extermination -- for the Hutus referred to their Tutsi brothers as "cockroaches" -- of close to a million people over the course of 100 days, is perhaps the most incredible and disgusting event in modern civilization. But who remembers it as well as Kurt Cobain's suicide which was discovered the same day as speculation that a civil war had broken out in some country and between two peoples nobody had ever heard of? Seemingly worse than Nazi extermination in its pure senselessness; more akin to the Bosnian-Serb split on fast forward. It would be as if Nazi Germany had divided its Jewish population into two classes and let them slaughter one another -- that's what Belgium effectively did when it divided Rwanda into two camps. "Sometimes in April," named for the month in which the carnage took place, is a haunting view from the inside told through the eyes of a Hutu soldier with a Tutsi wife who is himself in danger and loses his wife, three children and watches his best friend killed in the process. In fact, he loses everyone in his circle save one: his brother, who over the radio helps fuel the Hutu propoganda machine, and who 10 years later wants to own up to his crime, while trying to reconcile with his brother. The docudrama, which spares no detail of the horror of those 100 days, is interspersed with political tiddlywinks here in the U.S. in which, when hundreds of thousands are known to be dead, the talking heads aren't even able to agree whether the term "genocide" applies -- and which leaves one ultimately wondering: What if they had been Caucasian?

Gracie Thompson hasn't been so much brought up as dragged through life by her manipulative, drug-addled mother. Missing meals, dodging cops and landlords, changing schools the way most kids change socks, Gracie and her sister and brothers, each the product of a different dead-beat dad, seem to have hit the skids. Then Gracie makes a choice to get a job, succeed in school, find stability. And her choice isn't just for herself. At the age of 17, she decides to be the mother, emotionally and legally, her siblings never had.

All Around.......2007-04-03
My attention was first drawn to this movie because Kristen Bell of the CW's Veronica Mars is in it. After reading the discription I knew I had to purchase it and I am glad I did. Not only was it a perfect cast and the acting terrific but the movie all around was fantastic. I know it was based on a true story and that made it all the more captivating. I highly recommend this movie.
touching.......2007-03-09
Im not much of a lifetime movie fan but Im a huge Kristen Bell fan so i bought this just for that and i found myself loving this movie it is a touching story Kristen Bell is very endearing in this roll im not a big Anne Heche fan but she was good as the neglectful drug abusing mother
This is a true story of hope and unconditional love
Gracie's Choice.......2006-11-09
It's amazing how Gracie rose to the situation. How many other young children could or would do what she did. Just to keep her family together. Too bad the State didn't step in along time before they did.
Inspiring Story!.......2006-06-17
WOW!! I thought this movie was fantastic! We as people always think we have it bad until we hear someone elses story. It was truly inspiring to see a 17 year old girl become a woman so that she could raise her siblings and give them a life that she never had. What a strong and courageous girl she was!!! You gotta see this movie!
Very Good for a "Lifetime" Movie.......2005-06-12
For a movie on "Lifetime," this picture is very high quality, very perceptive. It is a story of how a teenager has to survive with a highly disfunctional, self-centered, drug-addicted mother. Her courage is very exciting to watch, and her tremendous efforts are rewarded in the end. You must see this movie.

Former Scotland Yard detective Albert Tyburn (Trevor Eve) finds himself in colonial Nairobi, the setting of Out of Africa, as head of a new criminal investigation unit. Imagine an athletic Hercule Poirot in the heat of the Kenyan sun. Superintendent Tyburn's unrelentingly independent policing style is remarkably effective against the murder, arson, blackmail, slave-trading, and other crimes that await him. The most serious impediments to Tyburn's investigations come from pompous Police Commissioner Ronald Burkitt (Michael Byrne) and the elitist, expatriate community's secret passions and vices. The outstanding cast includes Tyburn's talented crime-solving assistants, Constable Jonah Karinde (Freddie Annobil-Dodoo) and Assistant Superintendent James Valentine (Julian Rhind-Tutt), and his romantic interest, Emma Fitzgerald (Susannah Harker). The attractive, strong-willed biplane pilot Fitzgerald bears remarkable similarity to the real-life Beryl Markham, who recounted her experiences in West with the Night. The three episodes, "Private Lives," "Hide in Plain Sight," and "The Sport of Kings," are well written and action-packed. Mobil Masterpiece Theatre's Heat of the Sun will delight fans of fine detective work. --Tara Chace

Compelling stories and great acting combine for terrific entertainment.......2007-07-04
I too saw this series years ago and loved it. It's an amazing treatise on how the British went to a certain part of the world and thought they owned it, and how Tyburn comes in and treats everyone equally, to most of the "polite society's" astonishment. I have followed Trevor Eve's career since then, since I like his work so well ... "Waking the Dead" is a wonderful series that he's been in for the last 3-4 years. I first saw Susannah Harker in "Jewel in the crown" and she impressed me there. I just wish that this series had been filmed in widescreen vs full screen to get the full impact of the cinematography and the wonderful vistas of Africa.
first sight of trevor eve.......2007-03-28
this was the first ever i had seen or heard of trevor eve, and quite by accident, surfing channels. excellent for the colonial times and quite apt i think.
Heat of the Sun.......2006-11-14
Excellent PBS Mystery series. A great period piece. Excellent attention to costumes and equipment. However, in an African colony, in 1931, one would hardly expect all of the autos to be the current models. All of the vehicles used are 1931s, except for one coupe, which is a 1932. But only a vintage car buff would notice.
Fantastic and Intelligent - Compare to Foyle's War.......2006-09-04
I have hoped that this series would be continued past the first three stories - in vain. If you like Foyle's War (which has, fortunately, been continued), you will like Heat of the Sun. It's realistic; it's intelligent. It can be uncomfortable because this is not a pretty world. On the other hand, there are "good guys", just like in the real world, and, just like in the real world, they are not cartoon cut-outs, but flawed humans who are heros nonetheless. I very much recommend this series.
Excellent, one of the best PBS Mystery! series.......2006-08-06
Excellent series set in beautiful Kenya in 1931, the time of Beryl Markham and Isak Dinesen. The protagonist, Tyburn, is attractive, intelligent, knows police procedures and refuses to back down when determining who is guilty of the crimes committed. He has the right attitude (including contempt) toward the so-called elite of England and of Nairobi. He believes that no one is above the law. He also is not a bigot and treats the native Africans as they should be treated, as equals. The relationship with Emma (a bush pilot) is just right as to intensity and scope; it blends in very well with, but does not detract from, the plot. The acting is excellent and the plots very interesting. Having been to Kenya, this series did appear to have been filmed there and the settings appeared authentic and the scenery beautiful. Anyone who enjoys mysteries set in interesting historic locations with romance will thoroughly enjoy this series. I wish more of this series had been done.

Katie Liner (Kellie Martin) is a teenaged girl with a bright future who is swept off her feet by an attractive, but dubious young man, Jimmy Pettit (Ivan Sergei). The two soon marry and live a storybook life on the outside. But, on the inside they live with a terrible secret - he's physically abusive and she's too afraid to confide in anyone, especially her domineering father (Kevin Dobson), a police detective. When their son is born, the beatings increase in frequency due to Jimmy's jealousy over the baby. Yet, each time he apologizes and promises it will never happen again. Upon the impending birth of their second child, Katie realizes the situation will only get worse and makes an earnest attempt to leave her husband. When he threatens to kill her, she turns the tables and murders him in self defense. Faced with a life sentence, will a jury believe Katie's story and find her not guilty?

If Someone Had Known (True Stories Collection).......2007-04-12
This is a very good movie. It arrived quickly and in excellent condition. I recommend this movie to those who, like myself, enjoy true stories.
A powerful, gripping tragedy.......2005-12-08
A pampered daughter of a police chief (Kellie Martin) finds romance with an attractive, polite young man who seems to give her a wonderful home and child - but beneath their perfect surface lies abuse, and when Jimmy gets more violent as time goes on, Katie finds herself with no future at all. Part of the 'True Stories Collection', If Someone Had Known is a powerful, gripping tragedy. Keith is an oversized child unready to become a father even though he's married to Kim, who has always longed for children and is determined to adopt. When baby Brittany arrives in their lives Keith finds not only his carefree ways challenged, but a newfound love for his new daughter - a love shaken by the death of his wife from cancer, and by a court system determined to take away his baby before the adoption is complete. Teri Polo provides a gripping, believable protagonist as a young woman determined to have a child, and Andrew McCarthy as Keith is the perfect vision of a young father unprepared for the challenges of parenthood.
educational film.......2005-07-31
I remember seeing this on tv about 10 years ago. It was well written and Kellie Martin was perfect for the role of the people pleasing young girl. It was based on a true story of a girl who marries young and winds up being physically and verbally abused by her spouse. It is a very violent movie. I don't think anyone under 13 should watch it, but it is so realistic. Abuse can happen to anyone, even a policeman's daughter. The way to help prevent abuse is to realize that it can happen to anyone and to pay attention to the warning signs. I think parents should watch this movie with their kids once they start dating. My thanks to Kellie Martin who is so passionate about doing movies that are able to impact lives for the better. I am glad she is so wise and caring, she really has made a difference in my life.
P.S. For Kellie Martin fans...I just found out that Life Goes On will be released on dvd in the summer of 2006! It's about time!!!!!! I hope they will eventually release all four seasons of LGO, the most wonderful tv show ever.
