Secrets of War - World War II Battle Set

The two documentaries on this DVD, each an installment of the Secrets of War series, focus on particular episodes in the early years of World War II, the Battle of the Atlantic, and the Battle of Britain. Both conflicts share a common thread in that intelligence and technological innovations helped turn the tide, and each battle was vital to the eventual outcome of the war. The documentary on the Battle of the Atlantic follows the beginnings of the U-boat war, and by using archival footage and interviews with both historians and veterans, it crisply tells the story of how the German navy attacked Allied convoys and was eventually turned back, thanks in part to the brilliant breaking of German codes. The glory of England's "Finest Hour" is portrayed in the documentary on the Battle of Britain, which details how Nazi plans to invade England were frustrated thanks to the daring and innovation of the Royal Air Force. Both films on this disc make cogent points about how intelligence and science played a role in these campaigns, and while these battles are hardly secret, a lot of light is shed on lesser-known aspects of the strategy and fighting. --Robert J. McNamara

The story of naval intelligence, code-breaking and code stealing in the Battle of the Atlantic. "The Battle of Britain" - June, 1940. England stands alone against brutal aggression. The Germans have yet to be stopped in their lightning thrust across Europe. The British are outnumbered, but they have a secret weapon four years in the making. There were only 500 RAF fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain, but behind them, deep in the shadows of war, over 10,000 special men and women fought the battle of "Ultra," which helped make victory possible.
