Jancis Robinson's Wine Course

Over the course of five videos, Jancis Robinson gives us a basic understanding of wine: how it is made, how to appreciate it, how to properly store, open, and drink it. Robinson is an expert in the field, editor of The Oxford Companion to Wine, as well as a columnist for the Wine Spectator. These tapes, though, are not just about the drink; just as interesting is her look into the people behind the wines. Each video introduces a new locale and the people who cultivate the grapes and turn them into nectar. Robinson never speaks down to her viewer--she points out that wine should not be a serious subject, that its point is to provide pleasure--although she is frequently a bit condescending to the vintners in her interviews, making the show all the more amusing. Some of the best moments occur when she offers a winemaker a taste of the competitor's wine--somehow they never think it is quite up their own standards. She revels in revealing the scandals and failures of the wine world, providing a gossipy feel. While the wine course is more than enough reason to watch this series, the cinematography is spectacular, beautifully highlighting the wine-growing regions of the world--from Australia to Chile to Oregon to Europe. Mixing history and culture with nuts and bolts, this set is a perfect place to start if you have little or no previous knowledge of wine. --Jenny Brown

Delightfully witty.......2007-02-22
I absolutely loved this video series. It is very well done for a novice or more experienced wine lover. Jancis Robinson's very reserved, yet witty sense of humor and passion for the world of wine is a wonderful complement to her thorough knowledge of the subject matter. I would recommend this wine course to anyone looking to expand their knowledge on the subject.
Wine Course.......2005-09-26
Excellent well rounded presentation , stunning photography and of course, great wines all presented by a knowledgable entertaining wine lover, Jancis.
Good but ...........2005-04-27
I was disappointed after watching the program for 5 hours; I was looking for something more about wine and wine making. It is a good start for someone who wants to know about wine, that's all. This is definitely not a course as what the title says.
Caveat Emptor.......2005-03-02
I checked this course out of my local library, and suggest you do the same. It is marginally about wine, and a lot about the effects of globalization on the wine industry. Interesting, but if you want more than cursory insights on taste, and wine making technique, keep looking.
I am glad I watched it, make no mistake about that. Highlighting the differences between national winemaking styles alone is well worth the time. Interestingly though, I can't recall that it included discussion of the 1976 'Judgement of Paris' winetasting and its consequences.
I found Jancis a bit annoying after awhile. The British have a well-honed ability to be condescending towards others, while having no native ability of their own. She has the unremarkable ability to drink wine. How that translated into something of celebrity status is a story of its own. None of it translates in actual ability to create good wine. Perhaps a little more humility on that lack would have reduced the gossip and catty comments.
Most Informative.......2004-12-07
This is one of the most interesting DVD's I have ever viewed. I love wine and now have a whole new outlook on the various wines of the world. I will never look at wine the same again, only now with much more pleasure to be had. Thank you Jancis for doing such a great job and for visiting such a variety of wonderful and beautiful places.

In the introduction to her wine course, Jancis Robinson instantly makes viewers feel comfortable with their level of wine understanding. She points out that even among the experts, people frequently disagree about what is a quality wine, taking us to a wine tasting in which participants vehemently differ in their opinions. Then she acquaints us with the basics of how wine is made. One caveat to this video: be prepared for much spitting; wine tasters don't swallow their wine (a hazard of the job). The second half of this tape covers Chardonnays and their quest to take over the world. Also explained is the importance of the oak barrels used to store the wine. --Jenny Brown

For those of you fortunate enough to be able to collect the wines, Jancis Robinson explains how to start a wine cellar in this, the second video in her wine course. Looking into the one of the most popular wines in the world, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as sauvignon blanc, Robinson visits wineries in France, Chile, and New Zealand. "Flying winemakers"--those who travel worldwide to produce their wines--are also examined. She presents a fascinating comparison between old and new methods of winemaking--the traditional versus the high-tech. The glimpse into the different vineyards is beautiful and fascinating, and each one has a character of its own. --Jenny Brown

In the fourth tape of the Jancis Robinson's Wine Course, Robinson tries to establish whether a wine can truly express a terroir, the taste and feeling of a particular location. This is done by traveling to Burgundy and to Napa Valley, where she explores the Pinot Noir and the Merlot grape varieties. Americans may be particularly amused by this tape, as Robinson extols the health benefits of wine, pooh-poohing the Surgeon General's warning and expressing disbelief at the (what she says are) exaggerated health warnings on the labels. She paints a rather staunch picture of the U.S., which should prove fun to most American viewers. Also discussed on this edition are organic wine growing and phylloxera, a tiny louse that destroyed many of California's fields. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but not overly informative.......2002-10-09
Jancis Robinson takes the viewer on a interesting tour of current winemaking practices but the video lacks the thoroughness and specificity that I had expected from the prolific wine writer. Nonetheless, the video set was fairly informative and quite interesting...well worth your time for the price.

Pulling the cork out of a wine bottle is frequently no easy feat, and Jancis Robinson looks into the situation in the third installment of her wine course, "Syrah, Shiraz and Riesling." Riesling, one of the most misunderstood (and most mispronounced--it's rees' ling) wines, is a superb dry wine with a bland reputation. Learn how "noble rot" can actually create a lovely sweet wine. Germany's wine situation--which is a disaster--is examined, and Robinson also shares with us the Austrian antifreeze scandal. --Jenny Brown

Bubbles in bottles, grapes, and gas, the first half of this video covers everyone's favorite party drink: champagne. This, the last video in the five-tape series, Jancis Robinson's Wine Course, is perhaps the most fun as Robinson demonstrates how winemakers get the bubbles in bubbly. You'll also learn how to open these bottle without putting an eye out! The last course in the series, "Grape Invaders" shows how Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are taking over the wine industry (as she says, the "chocolate and vanilla" of the wine world), and she introduces us to some of the indigenous wines of Spain. As always, Robinson focuses as much on the people of the wine industry as the wine itself, and this is a delightful end to an informative series. --Jenny Brown
