The three discs in this boxed set cover quite a bit of territory. Volume 1 does a great job on UFOs, especially on Roswell and alien-human hybrids, but falls woefully short in the ghost-stories segment. Volume 2 thoroughly explores vampires and Nostradamus, although the style is somewhat dry. And Volume 3 purports to be about miracles and mysteries, though it shortchanges us in both categories, especially in the mystery department in which they present only one kinda crappy mystery about Whitley Strieber. Also, this one mysteriously ends 30 minutes too soon. The sound and visual quality of the first and third discs is uniformly bad. And the second one is just fine in both areas, for some reason. In many ways, this set is a grab bag of supernatural explorations rather than a consistently produced product. They've mixed and matched from several sources to put this together, with predictable results. Some terrific stuff, and some duds. The UFO and vampires pieces are particularly engrossing. --Jim Gay

Miracles: As our host, Lee Majors chronicles numerous stories of miracles, predominantly due to the power of prayer. The most interesting report has to do with the scientific evidence for the medical benefits of prayer, of which there's a whole bunch. Another is about the California Adaptive Ski School, dedicated to helping people with disabilities learn how to ski. As presented, this turns out to be more interesting than other stories of people who recover from accidents and so forth, despite the fact that it doesn't involve any miracle at all. It's just nice.Mysteries: Did bestselling author Whitley Strieber attend an interdimensional "secret school" when he was a boy in San Antonio? The voice-stress analyzer says he's credible. Others say it's just the power of suggestion. In other words, it's a mystery. So is the fact that this disc ends 30 minutes earlier than expected. You'd think they could have found some more mysteries to keep us interested for the last half-hour. --Jim Gay

Vampires: Both the folklore and the history of vampires are explored in this fairly erudite documentary. I was surprised by the seriousness of the piece. It even covers many of the obscure works of fiction on the subject, as well as historical accounts of vampirism and infamous figures who contributed to the myths, such as mass-murderer Gilles de Rais and, of course, Vlad Tepes, the original inspiration for Stoker's Dracula. You might be surprised to find out that many people believe vampires exist today. According to the Vampire Research Society of New York, there are 1,215 real vampires in today's world, most of them centered around Los Angeles. Working as extras or studio execs, no doubt.Nostradamus: The life of the famous 16th-century prognosticator is detailed in this serious documentary. Although the presentation is a bit dry, the material is scholarly. I wish they hadn't felt compelled to dramatize so much, because they couldn't find anything better for their actors to do than recite quatrains or passages from his biography. It would have been better to concentrate on deciphering Nostradamus's obscure poetry; there's enough material there for many documentaries. --Jim Gay

UFO Chronicles: Fascinating report on UFO phenomena, bolstered by credible witnesses, authors, and investigators. Especially noteworthy, and thorough, are the segments on Roswell, alien abductions, and genetic experiments. Eddie Page believes himself to be an alien-human hybrid. (For those who observe the amenities, the PC term is not "alien"; it's "celestial being.") Among other fun stuff are the Galactic Federation, a kind of UN of the universe, and the assertion that dolphins are from Sirius. The makers of these pieces wisely opted to let the documentary consist of interviews, letting the weight of anecdotal accounts make whatever case there is to make, when they might have easily erred on the side of conjecture. A worthy effort, well worth seeing, despite flaws in the quality of the discs. The sound is simply awful, and the visual quality is as fuzzy and unfocused as your average photographic evidence of flying saucers.Ghost Stories: Not as successful as its companion piece, this one is all over the supernatural map. Although it purports to be about ghost stories, there are pieces on visions of the Virgin Mary, werewolves, Nostradamus, and the Kombucha Mushroom, of all things. While none of these reports are bad or uninteresting in and of themselves, you may be scratching your head wondering when they're going to get back to the ghost stories. Ditto in spades on the quality of the sound and visuals noted above. --Jim Gay
