This disc is an embarrassment to its manufacturers and an insult to anyone who buys it. The Ultimate Space Experience is a misnomer, to say the least, because this 48-minute disc consists of little more than official NASA videos spliced together in a manner that might courteously be described as haphazard. The image quality is no better than VHS, and in the absence of narration the disconnected footage of rocket launches, moonwalks, and shuttle maneuvers is virtually no different from anything that's been shown many times on global TV news broadcasts. To make matters worse, the entire program is accompanied by random sound bites and cheesy MIDI-composed electronic music, including the morbidly ominous use of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor over scenes of the ill-fated crew of the shuttle Challenger preparing for their disastrous final flight. (Whoever thought this was appropriate music for those images should be severely punished.) Additional features on this DVD are of minimal interest at best, but as one customer comment has noted (see below), the disc could possibly serve as a basic primer for young children. However, even this is a hesitant recommendation, as so many better videos and DVDs are available about the topic of space exploration. Consider this disc a last resort, and even then you may simply decide to use it as a table coaster for your beverage of choice. --Jeff Shannon

The Ultimate Waste of Time.......2003-08-20
The Ultimate Money Wasting Experience.......2002-05-27
If you want a really good space experience check out "The BBC Presents THE PLANETS" which is quite good. Also "TO THE MOON" by NOVA is a 5 start production that is EXCELLENT! And for some breath taking space scenes check out "Destiny In Space" by IMAX. These are all excellent choices. Just spending 10 minutes of your day watching a clip of any of these films is far more rewarding than watching the entire "The Ultimate Space Experience" DVD. So don't think you are saving money purchasing this DVD. Think about it. 10 minutes of these other DVDs is better than this entire DVD. If you add up the minutes of enjoyment you'll get watching this DVD it amounts to ZERO. Is even a dollar worth ZERO minutes of enjoyment?
Worst DVD ever..........2001-05-09
This DVD gets a whopping ZERO STARS! WHY OH WHY does Amazon not allow a zero star rating?
Not even a good coaster ... the hole is too big!.......1999-06-14
I've got it! SAVE THE KEEP CASE! It'll make a good spare. (Sorry, Mom, it's the best I can do.)
I cannot leave this without adding this one point. The producers of this travesty obviously have no clue about what we are looking for in a space documentary. That much is clear. But the only coherent sequence in this mess was the Challenger tragedy. What were they thinking when they put it in this video? Not only is it totally out of place, it certainly should not have been used at the end! This is The Ultimate in bad taste!
