Awsome !.......2007-04-30

This DVD is indeed special. If you like Patrick O'Hearn and enjoy nature, you are about to experience a journey that will be shear joy from beginning to end. David Fortney has done some of this work in the past under a series of videos called "Earthscape" which are difficult to find but the comparison in quality with "Timeless" is day and night. If your are concern about global warming, this will show you what it can effect. This is a must for the whole family and pure inner healing.

The Crown Jewels of the American landscape.......2007-05-09

`America's National Parks' is not only a video tour of these locations, it is also something of a history and trivia lesson in that a good amount of information is offered about each area. As far as visuals are concerned, the cinematography really is something special to look at. The narration throughout the program is distinct and nicely paced in my opinion also. I've been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and one word that sticks in my mind about America is `diversity' because there is so much to see and experience and we are very blessed to have what we do. And we appreciate what we have.

To be quite honest, before seeing this program, I had no idea there were 55 different national parks in America. Now that I do know and having seen them all on this wonderful documentary, I want to rush out and see every one of them (even the few I've already visited). I'm sure that others seeing this material will probably feel the same way. It is simply inspiring just to watch and appreciate these beautiful and unspoiled landscapes.

Two special features are included in this DVD set. The first is entitled `Symphony to America's National Parks' and is music from classical composers set to a video montage of outstanding scenery lasting about 30 minutes (there is a different one for each disc). The second is called `Our Fragile Heritage' and at about 5 minutes long, it is basically a public service announcement with an important message. It talks about the importance of preservation and visitor's responsibilities inside the parks and I feel it is a useful compliment to the main program.

I highly recommend this documentary to everyone. This is worth watching over and over and it would be a worthwhile addition, in my opinion, to any DVD collection. Enjoy.

Best coverage of national parks so far.......2007-01-25

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is a must-have for all national park lovers. It does not only cover the most popular ones, but the rarely-visited as well. Although we may still grab some information on the website of National Park Service, it is good to see the real and living scenes from videos.

There are, however, two shortcomings of this 2-DVD set. First, it really only covers national parks. There are no national monument (for example, White Sands), national memorial (for example, Mount Rushmore), national historic site...... in the film. Some of them may be even more magnificent or spectacular than certain national parks. Another is that many scenes in this DVD set are not filmed so great, and even worse. I've been to many of these national parks and ask myself: how do these guys make these beautiful scenes so bad? So when you feel it doesn't look beautiful while watching it, don't just believe that park is not worthy of visiting. It tends to be a correct choice to blame on the men who made it.

Despite the above two bad sides, I still recommend this DVD set. It is indispensable.

Considering the large amount of ground these DVDs have to cover, they do a great job. Every single national park is given time, with interesting facts and great scenery. I loved learning and especially *seeing* more of some of the obscure parks that you normally can't find much information about, such as Kobuk Valley. For National Park lovers, it's a great addition to your national park library.

This DVD must be good, competitors need to attack it.......2007-06-23

If you look at the "review "below, it might surprise you that according to his logic he must work for a competitor because on the same day he attacked this park DVD, he promoted a park DVD by "Finley Holiday" (according to his logic a positive review and certainly a positive review combined with attacks on competitors must mean you work for that company). Unbelievable! And the company he is promoting has 151 DVDs mainly on the national parks, but they only had a handful of positive comments. I'll repeat again - they have 151 different DVDs and they could only get a handful of positive reviews. And what is even more amazing, is that most of these positive reviews were written the same day by the same guy - and they were almost identical (search Amazon DVDs using the name "Finley Holiday" and then see the Jan 3, 2006 reviews on Bryce Canyon, Carlsbad Cavern, Grand Teton, Death Valley, Arches, etc).

Regard America's National Parks and Forests DVD just read All Movie Guide comments: "This hour-long video offers viewers a tour of some of America's oldest and most renowned natural and man-made wonders, including the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Bruce Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, Crater Lake, Yosemite, Yellowstone, and other National Parks. Extensive wildlife and recreational footage is included as well, making this an appropriate primer for families wishing to survey the country's natural attractions before traveling to them." And All Movie Guide is an independent reviewer. "Anyway, I just thought I'd set the record straight for future unsuspecting buyers who really want to learn and discover our national parks."

Unbelievably Bad!.......2007-06-18

First of all, let me tell you that the 2 5-star reviews that motivated my purchase were clearly made by the seller/producer of this very bad travel video (check out their other "reviews") to inaccurately promote this and other DVD's. It's home-made movies of one person's personal travels, no menus, average to low quality video, with lots missing regarding what the title is all about, "America's National Parks and Forests".
It's bad, bad, bad, regardless of how you look at it. The commentaries, the video quality, what is actually shown on the video (shots from a zigzagging bicycle in Cape Cod, going down a boring ski slope in Yellowstone -or was it Yosemite?-, to a segment on a handful of bird varieties from various places). The music, bad, the voice on the voice over is somewhat irritating (the script, if it even was scripted is also bad)...

I'd give it zero stars if i could. Anyway, I just thought I'd set the record straight for future unsuspecting buyers who really want to learn and discover our national parks. From watching it, you'd hardly want to go to most of the places shown. And what about a number of unrelated travel destinations like Machu Picchu, Disneyland Europe, Switzerland, London, Canada... This is a bunch of home movies strewn together and it is painfully unmistakable. It's now a dishonest way to make a buck as well... Hopefully, the buck stops here.

Amazing!.......2006-12-27

This DVD is outstanding for two reasons: (1) the unbelievable quality of the videos and (2) the amazing diversity of the sites it covers including Acadia, Big Bend, The Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier, Yellowstone, Yosemite etc. Plus it has a bonus of some of the best parks in the world including Banff, The Great Barrier Reef and even the secret of Machu Picchu. What a travel guide! What a deal!

Fantastic DVD.......2004-12-06

I play this at work in a bank, in a religious jewish area, and I have surround sound. Image products have the most fantastic music to go along with their national park series, and I get customers praising the dvd's constantly, and some I have to give the address to so they can buy them. For a relaxing time, and great music it's a must.

Nice, but could be better.......2004-04-17

I liked it. But I would appreciate the ability to mute the music and just hear the sounds of nature. Also, in general, they move too quickly for my taste from one scene to the next. I freely admit however that this is a personal preference and my preference changes from scene to scene. Some scenes I like and wish they would have dwelled on, others they couldn't change the scene fast enough for me. However, I think that in general they move a little too quickly from one scene to another.

A disappointment.......2006-08-13

They should have named this dvd A Sportsman's Paradise in Alaska and dropped the price to $10.99. If I had to edit this dvd I would probably cut out more than half of it. The intro is terrible and the first 9 minutes made me want to send it back immediately. Chapter three contains several minutes of time-lapsed photography that is not aesthetically appealing, uninteresting and rather distressing. They focused too long and too often on the bears and I thought the two separate segments on the mother bear feeding her cubs was intrusive. The two crusise ships and the hydroplane skimming the water were totally out of place for a NATURE video and the bear walking the floating aluminum bridge seemed pointless. Scenes shot from the water where the camera was bobbing up and down were bothersome. That was most likely due to the wave action created by the huge chunks of ice falling into the water so it should have been shot from a different location. On the upside, there are some superb scenes between all the stuff I would edit out. The landscape scenes are exquisite as is the flora and there wasn't much fauna that I saw. There was so much more of the landscape that could have been exploited for this video like the caverns in the rock formations and scenes that focused on the wooded areas would have been so much better had they been longer and more in depth. My guess is some of this footage was used for Titanic. The ending leaves one cold as it is focused on a bear for the fourth time, standing on the edge of a waterfall waiting to catch his next meal.

Nature and classical music just don't seem a likely combination to me and I would have chosen something more earthy and native to Alaska to accentuate its beautiful scenery.

Sorry to say compared to Glacier National Park this was a real disappointment. Alaska is a beautiful place rich with all kinds of beauty but this video just didn't capture all it could have and overall I gave it a 2, the quality of SOME of the imagery does deserves a 5. I wouldn't spend $17.99 for it again and I'm considering sending it back. I don't see 25,000 hours of video taping in this DVD and I won't purchase another Image Entertainment Video or any other video of this kind unless I can preview it first. I don't have $18 to throw away on something that has been misrepresented by advertising or lack thereof and I don't mean to be cruel but I don't have money to throw around frivolously and I'm sure there are millions of other Americans who don't either.

I enjoyed viewing the supperb images in this video. I personally prefer explications, which makes a video more informative. I had a strange feeling that the things are mixed-up a little bit, and the seasons jumped back and forth. It IS a great movie except that I simply expected too much.

It's hard not to have great expectations of a DVD that boasts tours through some of America's majestic National Parks.

"Touring Through Great National Parks: Volume One" is interesting, well researched and does offer terrific visuals of many of America's natural treasures, but it does tend to be a little slow in pace and the audio quality, which tends to sound a little muffled now and again, could have been better.

Visually, it's hard to go wrong with images from parks like Arches, Acadia, Olympic and the Rocky Mountains, but if you're spoiled by the breathtaking IMAX 70 mm film, you'll be a little disapointed by the picture quality on this DVD.

Pretty damn good.......2007-05-25

I live in 29 palms which is right outside of the park and after reading a review of this DVD in the sunrunner magazine (go sunrunner!) I bought a copy. I can honestly say that after living here for 22 years now I learned more from this video than all my visits to the visitor center and am using it to convince relatives to visit. Makes me proud of my backyard!
