Isao Tomita's solo electronic interpretation of Gustav Holst's ground-shaking, daring, 1916 symphonic suite is the only reason to listen to, er, watch, this DVD. But be warned: there are several exceptional CDs of Holst's piece that might better suit your ears. Sadly, the visual accompaniment by director Don Barrett dulls the soaring, gorgeous score. The visual side of the DVD is a strange collision of basic textbook astronomy lessons, grainy outer space photography, and outdated supercomputer animation. This unexciting presentation is mashed over Tomita's remix of Holst's suite and then segmented into a lecture on each planet. The result is a tiresome show that undercuts the beauty of "Venus" and the power of "Jupiter." Alas, Houston, there is a problem. The Planets was made in 1991 and to be fair, home theater has accelerated in leaps and bounds in the several years since. But the bigger question remains: why bother to release a DVD of such tepid technology at all? IMAX is infinitely superior and even the late genius Stanley Kubrick, in his three-decade-old 2001: A Space Odyssey, showed more chutzpah and imagination than this dated misfire. --Paula Nechak
Description
In 1916, Gustav Holst, a composer of music and self-admitted mystic, wrote a brilliant orchestral suite entitled "The Planets." Sixty years later, internationally renowned keyboard artist and composer Isao Tomita created a highly popular electronic version of the Holst suite. Now, award-winning director Don Barrett has chosen "The Tomita Planets" for the soundtrack of this musical video grand tour of the Solar System. Using actual outer space photography returned to Earth by the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, Pioneer, Magellan and Galileo spacecrafts, combined with supercomputer animation, scientific accuracy throughout the planetary segments co-exists with artistic license within transitional material to create a magnificent marriage of sight and sound, art and science.

4 out of 5 stars Give it a Chance.......2007-05-01

Okay, this video is really cheesy. The first time I watched it I really didn't like it! But guess what, my 4yo is CRAZY about it and after the 4th or 5th time it really grows on you. The songs are catchy (though I hate to admit it, LOL) It's pretty basic, which is perfect for a child who doesn't know anything about the solar system - they focus on one key point for each planet, easy for them to remember. But even my son, who enjoys Discovery Channel space programs, did not find this boring. I think it's worth the $$. You might get sick of being asked to put it in all day long, though! LOL

4 out of 5 stars NICE DVD............2007-03-26

I bought this dvd for my 3 yrs old son .First i was scared that...he will like it or not....but really he enjoyed it too much .

5 out of 5 stars VERY COOL!.......2007-03-16

My almost three year old son has been showing a huge interest in the solar system so I purchased this video. He LOVES it and I'll admit I've also been re-introduced to some long-lost solar system facts. We watch this often and the songs are catchy (which I find myself humming all day long). I hope to find more videos for this age range that educate and entertain kids in regard to the solar system. I'm very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars amazing teaching tool.......2007-03-09

When I first got this DVD and previewed I knew two things: 1. it may be annoying as heck for the adults in the classroom, thus 2. the kids would LOVE it. I teach in a classroom of students with special needs. THEY ALL LOVE IT!! and more importantly, they all learned from it. I designed some activities around it and still use it as a reward now that the unit is over b/c it is their number one favorite.

the tunes are a bit musical-esque and irritating, but they area catchy and filled with some useful info. I wish they illustrated the rotation and orbiting around the sun more b/c that is difficult to teach without visuals. It would have made it perfect. Also the bonus feature is a cute quiz, but its not that thrilling.

Think of this BBC two-part TV special as Walking with Planets. One of the makers of the excellent Walking with... dinosaur programs looks forward--into the future--and upward--into space--for another presentation of story-driven science. This fake documentary follows an international crew of five on an extraordinary six-year spaceflight. We hear from Mission Control and view footage of the astronauts in training along with the flight photography and "TV broadcasts" (perfect for quickly explaining facts via Q&As). The flight is beyond ambitious: landing on Venus, Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, the rings of Saturn, an asteroid, and the far-off reaches of Pluto. Certainly, no real space agency would sign off on such a mission, but the dramatics work thanks to the deft handling by writer-director Joe Ahearne (Ultraviolet). Here's a fun way to learn about the crushing pressure of Venus or the risk/reward of slingshot-ing around the sun. With quick pacing (we are on Venus six minutes into the two-hour movie), smart choices (some of the astronauts' hardships are brutal), plus excellent special effects (the mile-long spacecraft Pegasus is a dandy), you have a program with which families can learn together and kids will want to watch more than once.

The DVD contains some great making-of features, plus a complete episode on the real-life space probes that have visited--and are still visiting--the planets. They are just as watchable as the main program. --Doug Thomas

Description

Imagine trying to capture an icy block from Saturn's rings or drill on the disintegrating surface of a comet. This program reveals for the first time the danger and spectacle of what it would be like for astronauts to land on and explore the other planets in the solar system. Their mission lasts for six years, extending the boundaries of what has been achieved in space travel to date. Combining the latest scientific thinking and the real-life experiences of astronauts with drama and spectacular CGI, Voyage to the Planets and Beyond propels us into the not-too-distant future.

5 out of 5 stars A Planetary Travelogue.......2007-07-05

The producers of this movie have done a magnificent job of depicting a voyage to the planets. Though filled with science fact, this is however science fiction. (Such a voyage for real would be prohibitively expensive and logistically incredible.) Still, this is as close as you can get and is highly enjoyable. My only negative comment would be that it isn't long enough. I wanted more. It was that good!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Effects and Real Science.......2007-01-18

OK let me start by saying that no country, or even groups of countries, would spend the trillions of dollars and euros that this mission would cost.
With that out of the way, I must say that the mission is believeable in every aspect except the landing on Venus. I am an engineer who has been involved with the various space programs for 30 years and the technology for this type of mission exists or is close to existing. Again the only technological hurdle is the Venus stuff but everything else, including the nuclear propulsion, rotating structure to provide partial "gravity", recycling of water and waste material, etc are either here now or will be available withing a decade. What is not avaiable is the national will to spend the kind of money a mission like this would require. We could have been back to the moon and to Mars 20 years ago if we had been willing to spend the cash. But imagine funding this type of mission. The hydrogen tankers at "strategic locations" along the trip alone would cost more than the Apollo program, even in today's dollars/euros.
As to this movie - bravo. The special effects were outstanding. You actually believed they were on Mars, Io and even Pluto. Even the Venus landing "looked" good, even if it wasn't very feasible. Everything about this movie was first class and I have enjoyed watching it again and again. Since we'll not visit any of these places with manned craft in most of your lifetimes (except Mars) this is the next best thing. The "planet scapes" of Mars, Venus, Io, Saturn's rings, Pluto and the Comet were just what I would espect to see. Life aboard the ship was as realistic as could be expected and the actors did a great job.
I recommend this to anyone with an interest in spaceflight and anyone else who would just like to be "wowed" by some fantastic scenery.

5 out of 5 stars SPACE TRAVEL W/O The Schmaltz.......2006-07-23

I have to admit, i am practically addicted to this film, but for a variety of reasons, not all of which have to do with the "drama" of the show. Let's start out, on the hard science that backs up the show. For what we know today, from Hubble, the planetary probes, and solar activity, most of what i see in the show, DOES address the reality of space travel. It's a very practical show, because it addresses our technological shortcomings, to REAL interplanetary space travel. Even tho Bush has tried to play this game, that mankind can go to Mars, we can not at the present stage, because of the VERY REASON so often stressed in this film. 1. NEED OF A VERY FAST PROPULSION SYSTEM. We cant make it with our present rockets. Only something like a FUSION Nuclear engine, could give us the boost, to get where we are going FAST. 2. NEED OF SOME KIND OF ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY. Again, they have this sort of "Carnival ride" that allows the living quarters and workout space, to spin, providing the centrifugal gravity of 0.5 G. The space ship itself is a mile long, so that allows things like the SPACE DEBRY shield, and the centrifugal gravity quarters, to operate within the boundries of science. 3. SOLAR ACTIVITY PROTECTION. Again, they have a special invention, that provides the astronauts with something like an artifically produced VAN ALLEN radiation belt, around the inner core of the ship. They even has a space suit like that, which i was totally taken away by, from the pure inventiveness. 4. GAS STATIONS FOR LONGER FLIGHTS Another problem solved, was done via sending out huge HYDROGEN fuel tanks, around Mars and elsewhere, for refueling. Other problems with the scientific limits of the human body were delt with, as well as the problems of the vulnerability of the human body, physically and mentally.

People have critized this movie, because at each planet/solar system encounter, some type of CRISIS happened. WEll, OK, you do need some kind of drama to drive the film. Human interactions between the crew, and the ground crew, are not enough. However, with both a well written musical score giving a dramatic UMPH, good script writing, and total REALITY of depliction, it's easy to buy into the idea, that what you are REALLY watching, isnt a film, but rather a series of TV news reports, mixed with documentary material. That makes the whole thing WORK, tho not in the way a film like "APOLLO 13", or "VOYAGE TO MARS" works. There are not extended "interpersonal" dramas, outside of the normal ones expected, with tragidy strikes. The special effects are SO INCREDIBLE, that they literally filmed part of this movie in ZERO GRAVITY, on one of those parabolic planes, the infamous "VOMIT COMETS", used to train astronauts for the experience of weightlessness. Imagine watching these actors move around in the weightless enviorment, WITHOUT computer animation. ITS SO COOL. Because the awe, and queasiness, and joy, of weightlessness comes across so well, when BBC could have easily done the cheap thing ,and just used wires and blue screens with computer work. Also the scenes on Venus and Mars are beautiful. The encounter with the sun, as a gravity swing shot, was magnificent, because all these REAL FILMS of the sun from the SOHO observatory were used. The same with the VENUSIAN radar mapping of the planet used for that part, and so on and so on. Maybe the only part that sort of made me wonder, was WHY they went to Pluto. ALso, I sort of wondered what was up with the comet encounter. (Not really nessacary, tho it was a great dramatic ending.) If you DO line up each encounter with danger, starting at VENUS, then MARS, then the SOLAR SLING SHOT, then the ASTEROID BELT, then JUPITER's IO, then SATURN's RING, then THE COMET, each encounter that caused danger, is more and more catastrophic, and dangerous, than the last one. Sure, something happens on VENUS, but then again, that's NOTHING compaired with what happens later. So, suspense, and danger, and most of all, ADVENTURE is kept alive. NO, nothing like ancient cultures are found, or talking marians. I mean, DO WE REALLY EXPECT THIS? Much of what we still want to believe about our solar system, is based on our deep wish to know, that LIFE happens all the time. maybe the best thing is that we find out, that its RARE, and should be protected and cherished on our planet. I dont want to give out spoilers, so i better stop here.

In conclusion, i borrowed this film from the library, and i have LITERALLY watched this thing at least 7 times thru. I never NEVER do that with films. But between the actual footage of the planets and the sun, mixed with the reality of the mission, the space ship, and the documentary style, i just love this movie. This is the REAL documentary about Mankind's conquest of our solar system, that i may never see in my lifetime. AND, if our world doesnt get it together, and spend its money on science art and education, instead of braindead entertainment, war machines and pharmeceutical company lobotomies that allow us to complacently accept this boring NON life as "adequet", then we may NEVER get to explore the heavens. More than anything, this is a film that gives us HOPE, in a world that DOES survive, and thru international cooperation, finds the cultural and scientific motivation, to make great stides forward. THis is truly the future i wish my descendants, and not Hell on earth chewing on soilent Green. So, buy this to instill a bit of hope for a good future for humanity. Right now, we sure need to believe in it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2006-04-21

I've seen a lot of educational movies about space exploration and the like, and this film really takes things to a new level. I really enjoyed the fictional documentary format, especially since they were in able to make it so believable for most of the movie. This is particularly impressive given the very modest budget of the movie.

More importantly, perhaps, the filmmakers did a good job of not dumbing down the content and of being (more or less) scientifically accurate in their depiction of the mission. One reviewer commented that the crew took a lot of risks in the movie that were "unrealistic" in the sense that they were risks that modern astronauts probably would not take. That said, the risks the crew took were not unrealistic in the sense that they were scientific fiction, which helped to greatly preserve the integrity of the film.

Overall, this film is a rare treasure in that it is botn entertaining and highly informative.

4 out of 5 stars I Liked the Extras more than the Program.......2006-02-21

The main program is based on an interesting idea. It posits a crewed mission to most of the solar system with landings at most of the stops. While this is not technically achievable right now, at least as described in the program, it is based on technology that seems achievable in the near future. The encounters with the planets and other bodies are based upon science as we understand it right now. The facts presented by the program tend to be straightforward and there is little hype in the sense that one usually expects it.

There is some hype. It seems that with every step of the mission some crisis takes places. These are not built up in an overly dramatic fashion and the crises are based upon real and known problems with the particular venue. The atmosphere of Venus is crushing and corrosive; the crisis there involves the suit which succumbs to this environment sooner than expected. There are no nasty surprises waiting for the crew such as little aliens with ray guns or exotic viruses. The crises are foreseeable and generally illustrate a technical point.

It seems as if throughout the entire show, they are building up for a "big discovery" about life. I kept waiting for the revelation, just knowing they were going to find something on Mars, or in the seas of Titan. That it never came was a minor disappointment in a "dramatic" sense but a great joy in the sense that the program refused to take a leap beyond facts as presently understood.

The show was well done but, all in all, not too interesting. I was only going to give it 3 stars until I watched some of the extra features. The "making of" segments were very interesting in that they described how the various extra terrestrial environments were re-created. I found that interesting. Best of all, though, was a half hour program on the actual robotic probes which have been sent by Earth. I have always loved seeing footage from these probes and I enjoy it still. It was nice to see the way these programs were used to build the hypothetical Pegasus program depicted in the feature. This is what gave it the extra star for me.

Where did it all begin? How did the universe give birth to the sun and its family of planets that form our solar system? How is a bubbling atomic reactor in space the source of warmth and light for life as we know it? Why will Mars be the first planet we colonize? What is the long-term fate of the planets in our solar system? Are we alone? The Planets is an entertaining, comprehensive, and informative A&E documentary series that sets out to answer many of life's most physically existential questions. This series combines scientific history of early scientists, rich knowledge from the leading minds in modern astronomy, and extraordinary image technology to tell the story of our solar system, from its beginnings to the present and beyond. The topics of the eight-volumes are: "Different Worlds," "Terra Firma," "Giants," Moon," "Star," "Atmosphere," "Life Beyond the Sun," and "Destiny." From the sweltering rocky surface of Mercury to the violent stormy skies of Jupiter to the cold, mysterious land of Pluto, The Planets is a fascinating exploration of discovery and adventure for anyone who has looked up into space on a starry night in total amazement. --Rob Bracco

4 out of 5 stars Good Visual Tour of the Solar System.......2007-02-26

This DVD set of "The Planets" has some fine technology with impressive graphics which take you on a life-like tour of the solar system. The narrator does a fine job, though she's no Carl Sagan. I had enjoyed it about as "The Astronomers" with Richard Chamberlain because, like that other series, you see first hand what the scientists have studied and discovered. The visuals add much realism to what they are explaining, something which the viewer will appreciate. Many of those techniques, unfortunately, were not available when Sagan made his "Cosmos" series. But Sagan, who was a much more lively teacher than any of the other astronomers on "The Planets", appears only briefly in a couple of clips made years before the series was made. And when the other scientists appear so often you sometimes wish that they would talk less about and show us more of the celestial wonders that they marvel at. Still, if can you look behind them, there is much to impress you on the screen.

I haven't seen the original BBC version, although that would require a different DVD player. It looks like the BBC tailored this version for American viewers, which is understandable since they wanted sell the series to A & E, an American cable network. However, as is true of more recent documentaries such as "Planet Earth" (the BBC version), the documentaries seem better because they aren't restricted to the format of the U.S. cable industry. The BBC's audience in Britain may be quite different in its tastes than those who watch the cable networks here in America. So perhaps to our disadvantage, there is less in the American edition about astronomy in other other parts of the world such as Russia and even Great Britain. I would have liked to have seen Patrick Moore from "The Sky at Night", one of Britain's leading astronomers, but I don't recall that he ever made an appearance. Perhaps he is on the original BBC version.

5 out of 5 stars The Planets.......2007-02-16

An all inclusive look at our solar system. Perfect for upper elementary students. Presented in plain language with lots of graphics, it is a great tool to teach students about the solar system.

5 out of 5 stars "The Planets" Bring the Solar System Alive.......2005-12-22

Most texts of Earth Science have chapters devoted to the Terrestrial and Gas Giants.... these texts are sterile and produce no memory recall in Freshman Students (or anyone else for that matter). I have experimented with this entire series regarding both recall and interest of students (Freshman). The theory of accretion as a means of forming our Moon as well as the planets of the solar system are clearly explained in a disovery format. The history of planet exploration is greeted with enthusiasm.

The fascination of the moons of the Gas Giants allow students to realize that IO is the most geologically active body in our solar system...Students are amazed at the ability of thermophiles to travel from planet to planet on meteorites, thus being able to populate other bodies in our solar system. They are also fascinated, but"sickened" by the disovery that someone's germs in the lens cap of one of the Moon rovers could be grown when back on earth.

Students are amazed at the concept that most of our solar system is geologically active.... not necessarily in the terms of what we know on earth, but in the presence of water, nitrogen, and sulfur as the active components.

Although it is not necessarily intended for this to suplant the text it certainly does accelerate recall and learning and stimulates student interest. I can easily say to my classes... "Do you remember the Volcanism on IO? or,... do you remember the theory of accretion that aided the formation of the solar system." They instantly say yes. Together with the Amazing Earth (review forthcoming)these multimedia gems complete a well rounded basis for Earth Science instruction. Combining this with hands-on activities, set's the stage for curiosity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-04

This is THE best documentary on the history of space science. Good graphics, good fact checking, interviews with the top scientists, and a well-balanced look at both Soviet and American programs.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for those beginning to study astronomy........2005-08-04

Firstly, I wish to state that this series does NOT go in-depth into astronomy and the study of the cosmos. However, it gives the viewers a general idea on the birth of our solar system and a brief commentary on the future of space explorations, it does not go into the mathematical details of astronomy and the formation of our solar system. However, the visuals presented in this series is outstanding and inspiring.

8 different titles are being separated in 4 DVD discs. The narration is medicre (but NOT awful) and I would recommend the readers to get the region 2 version of this series. The narration is much better than the US version and it is less expensive as well.

There is also a cameo appearance of Carl Sagan which elevates this series a bit. I would thus like to recommend "Cosmos" by Sagan in addition to this series. "Cosmos" goes deeper into astronomy and our universe than "The Planets".

Description

Creation of the Humanoids: Following a catastrophic nuclear war, mankind creates a race of blue-skinned androids to assist in the reconstruction of civilization. Disparagingly referred to as "Clickers," the robots grow more intelligent and human-like. To stop their evolution and to preserve their own rule, a fanatical group called The Order of Flesh and Blood is created. Are the robots really man's enemy or his last hope for survival? Featuring cinematography by Academy Award winner Hal Mohr, and makeup by famed artist Jack P. Pierce (Frankenstein, The Mummy), this philosophical science fiction drive-in classic was rumored to have been a favorite of pop artist Andy Warhol. War Between the Planets: When a series of natural disasters plague civilization, scientists learn that the culprit is a seemingly barren planet set on a collision course with Earth. A team of astronauts is sent to counter the impending Armageddon, but after landing on the wayward planet they discover that it has a bloodthirsty life of its own. Also known as Planet on the Prowl and Il Planeta Errante, this extremely stylish Italian sci-fi thriller directed by Antonio Margheriti (Castle of Blood, Cannibal Apocalypse) was the third film in the Gamma I Quadrilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth getting just for "Creation of the Humanoids".......2006-11-25

Let me get the technical details out of the way first. The transfer is superb, picture quality excellent, sound excellent and it's letterboxed so you get it in the original "drive-in" aspect ratio. The only technical detail in "Creation..." that's sub-par is they needed better proofreading for the subtitles. There are a few errata, and if, like me, you use the subtitles, that can make the brain itch.

"Creation" itself, however, remains eminently watchable and utterly undated. Yes, it's a low-budget "B" movie. But the sets are acceptable, and the acting and dialogue at least as good as any TV series of the early 60s. There wasn't a note anywhere in this that sounds out of place in the story. NOTHING in this film strained the cables on my suspension of disbelief.

But as science-fiction, this movie shines like a well-lit diamond for thoughtfulness of script, philosophical depths explored, and some very human and HUMANE moments. I've never been able to forget the line about "Irony, the funniest form of humor." since the first time I watched this film back in the sixties. When I found out later in the story just what Pax (a Clicker) meant by that comment and the joyous peal of laughter which accompanied it, I agreed with him, and laughed like hell.

And wait for a line that begins "Only the memory..." For that line alone, I would have bought this picture, because that line, perfectly delivered by Don Doolittle, contains the true humility that marks all real scientific endeavorers. It also raises philosophical questions that haunt me to this day.

I can't speak of "War Between the Planets". I found it unwatchable.

But I don't care. I've wanted a GOOD copy of "Creation of the Humanoids" in my collection even before I knew a collection was possible, and now I have it. Both my budget and my time are at a premium, but this incarnation of that picture is worth every penny I spent getting it, and every wonderful minute watching it. In my opinion, this is one of the five best science-fiction movies of all time.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Robot Movie.......2006-07-13

I purchased the DVD for "Creation of the Humanoids." I was pleased by the quality of the movie as well as the entertaining extras on the disk. Over the years, I had forgotten the other movie, "War between the Planets." Since most good sci fi movies don't go beyond a B movie, no need to nitpick on why neither movie won an Oscar.

These two movies might be packaged together for opposites between them. First, rich special effects in `Planets' almost make up for a weak story and predictable action scenes. In contrast, `Humanoids' presents a very strong story, adequate effects, but simplistic scenery. The stark backgrounds in `Humanoids' scenes look cheap at first. Yet, the simplicity seems a deliberate way to focus attention on the sometimes-deep dialogue and excellent acting as robots.

`Humanoids' starts by explaining that a small percentage of humanity survives the big nuclear war. Over time, civilization carries on but faces slow death from a low rate of healthy births per man/woman "contract." Humans, and the robots programmed to serve them, adjust to the realization of slow death. People either accept robots or violently oppose their increasing complexity. Unlike Star Trek's "What Are Little Girls Made Of" (original TV series) where a robot is a piece of property incapable of genuine emotion, `Humanoids' takes the opposite track. A woman purchases a robot/butler/companion and pays extra for him to have a sense of humor. Even though machines lack vision, he says that no one asks to be created.

While robots in movies such as "Star Wars" or "Westworld" entertain, "Creation of the Humanoids" positions itself as a thought-provoking but fun experience at or near the top of robot stories. I give this B movie an A+ for science fiction. "Creation of the Humanoids" is a must-have for any robot fan.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent transfer.......2006-06-28

I'll second everything that :Bob Eggleton said, and add that the video quality on this DVD - particularly for "Creation of the Humanoids" is very good.

There are muddy DVD and VHS copies of this movie available elsewhere, but I believe that they are dubs of the 1985 Sun Cost VHS that had a bad edit glitch near the beginning.
This version is much cleaner and and sharper. It looks like a transfer from the original film. It still has the glitch, but it's almost imperceptible.

"Creation of the Humanoids" really is a rough gem - almost everything about it is poorly done - yet the movie WORKS. When it's done, the story sticks with you. It's great SF.

Antonio Margheriti's "War of the Planets" is fun to watch. The rest of the Quadrology is available on DVD as well; one or two appear on the "SciFi Classics Collection: 50 Movie Pack"

This DVD is a great addition to any GOOD Science Fiction movie collection.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Retro Sci-Fi...UHF memories..........2006-06-01

CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS is perhaps one of the most creative and low-budgeted films ever made. Despite it's B film title, zero budget, it has alot of good ideas in it that sound alot like Asimov's laws of robotics at one point. The film is light years ahead of it's time in predicting the dilemma of what happens when robots-created by Man-think on their own, have feelings and start to make decisions-contrary to Man. And how even a "fundamentalist" order of humans arises from this threat and what happens when they clash. There is no action to speak of, it all comes of like a play done on minimalist sets, but shot in blazing technicolor. The acting is surprisingly well done if slightly overdone in parts. I only ever saw this on a fuzzy UHF showing in the l970's, and never saw it again-or it's "twist" ending which comes out of the blue. The print is quite good-gets better as it goes along, the opening credits are a bit scratchy however. The second feature WAR BETWEEN THE PLANETS (AKA PLANETS AGAINST US) is the fourth in Antonio Margheriti's Italian space opera quartet(Previous entries were WAR OF THE PLANETS, WILD WILD PLANET and THE SNOW DEVILS) and has lots of Italian eye-candy gals and macho men in the same outfits seen in the last three films and all revolving, kind of around the Gamma One Space Station but this is one of the lackluster in action of that set of films, compared to say the really fun WILD WILD PLANET(Walter Manley, the producer on this, would later take his space station concept to Japan and make THE GREEN SLIME, in essentially the same universe, but now Space Station Gamma Three). The print on this one is from the theaterical release by Fanfare Films in 1971 that played at mostly drive-ins back in the day with what I remember was a huge ad campaign. That said, it's a fairly nice print and, the whole film is *narrated* by Norman Rose-a voice announcer who worked for NBC in the 1970's and did the introduction to DESTROY ALL MONSTERS(the AIP version) as well as Promise Butter ads.

Good fun viewing brings back a time when these things aired on TV with regular play.

One of the early shows that helped to build an audience for anime in America, Battle of the Planets began in Japan as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman in 1972-74. For its 1978 U.S. release, the 105 episodes were cut to 85. Much of the violence was excised and new animation, featuring the R2-D2-esque robot 7-Zark-7 and his robo-pooch 1-Rover-1, was created to bridge the gaps. Turner Broadcasting acquired the property in 1986 and recut it into 85 different episodes. The resulting G-Force included more violence, yet it wasn't shown in its entirety in the U.S. until it aired on the Cartoon Network in 1995. This release includes all three versions, enabling viewers to compare and contrast.

In episode 1, five highly trained teenagers--incongruously clad in bird suits--tackle a giant biomorphic enemy vessel. The group executes the commands of their brilliant scientist-leader in the virtually identical Gatchaman and G-Force. When they take on the bad guys, the punches, kicks, and yo-yo weapons connect forcefully; to escape, they convert their ship, the God-Phoenix, to "Firebird Mode," an avian cloud of glowing plasma. In Battle, the quintet takes orders from the dithering, Hanna-Barbera-style Zark. The hand-to-hand combat is heavily censored and the heroes somehow turn themselves into a "Fiery Phoenix." It's campy and silly, rather than exciting. Unrated; suitable for ages 10 up. --Charles Solomon

3 out of 5 stars Slight technical difficulty.......2004-06-08

Lots of other reviews here do an excellent job covering the content of this DVD. I just wanted to mention that there is a slight technical problem with this DVD (and the rest of vols. 1-4). The English language track on the G-Force episode is virtually inaudible, which is a real disappointment and knocked the DVD down a star. I tried on two different players (Pioneer DV-626D and Playstation 2), and they both have the same trouble. I even wrote in to Rhino's technical support and they kindly exchanged the discs for me, but sadly, the replacement discs are the same way. I just wanted to put out the warning here. The rest of the disc is fine and has great content - it's just that one problematic audio track.

3 out of 5 stars Be careful, for nostalgia's sake!!!.......2004-03-16

When I first saw this for sale I was absolutely giddy with excitement. One of the greatest shows of my childhood was now available on DVD! I got it home and popped it in and..."I don't remember it being this lame?" For what it's worth, there were some nostalgic moments. One, was finally seeing my heroes in their colorful costumes saving the day and another was hearing Key-op talk in his very funny way, "Brrrrrr-toot-toot!" But after that I thought everything else was fairly second-rate. It's amazing what glorious images I can conjure in my memory of this show, and how the reality of my adult perspective shatters all the charm it once held. However, there are the "Gatchaman" episodes, which is the only feature of this DVD that saves it from being a complete failure. While "Battle of the Planets" is broken up with freeze-framing and the intensely annoying 7-Zark-7 filling in plot holes with voice-over narration, not to mention his equally annoying companion 1-Rover-1 doing his side-show antics, the "Gatchaman" episodes flow more fluidly with more action and acceptable violence. If I had known better I would have bought only the "Gatchaman" episodes. It just fits the ideas better that they speak in Japanese. I've seen enough Japanese animation to know that more things are possible in the hyper-reality of their highly creative shows than in the saccharin-based shows of America where the violence is tempered, if shown at all. Something that I recently noticed about world-wide animation is that virtualy all the characters are caucasian. Being white, I guess I just never noticed. Most Japanese animation, in particular, has a tendency toward white Americanized heroes. It might be because we are the largest consumer nation in the world, but this is not a new trend. Just like the cutting-edge animation from Japan like "Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within," the show "Battle of the Planets" has an all-white cast. It's just an interesting, cultural note, one that makes more sense these days than in days past. Anyway, get the "Gatchaman" series on DVD if you must insist on purchasing anything for nostalgia's sake. I got this out of a deep-seeded feeling of nostalgia, and I was disappointed overall. Be careful.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD especially for a classic show........2003-10-17

If you like the classic anime then these are the DVDs to get. Ydo not just get Battle of the Planets version but also the Gatchaman & G-Force. ALL THREE SERIES!!!! I can't understand how anyone can complain. Definitely one of the few classic series done right the first time.

I tried to be more brief than the other long winded brief guy below. ;)

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT ONLY FOR THE ORIGINAL GATCHAMAN EPS. BOTP [STINKS]!.......2003-06-12

as an avid fan of anime, i watched the original epidsodes of captian harlock, cyborg 009, space cruiser yamato (star blazers for the uninitiatied!) and gatchaman back in the day.

i was disgusted how american distribitors like sandy frank and saban (who aired gatchaman f1 as the kiddified eagle riders several years back) would butcher gatchaman from it's original content. at least carl macek allowed as much depth and violence in robotech as possibly allowed. same goes forsunbow's star blazers.

back to gatchaman or "battle of the scammers" this was not meant to be aired as some kiddy show but i guess frank tried to capatilize on the popularity of star wars at the time.
with goofy names like princess and the original jar-jar binks of
animation 7 zark 7 some poorly drawn r2 d2 ripoff. HA HA!

you must purchase this disc just to see what was left on the cutting room floor, contrasting of the three series; BOTP,G-FORCE AND GATCHAMAN.

there's one scene where mark/ken tries to rescue the captured astronauts, in the botp version; they weren't shown at the end but zark narrates; "the astronauts have been rescued and are safe thanks to g-force, on the g force version; they were "put to sleep/unconscious....and in gatchaman, they were killed by galctor/spectra but they're corpses were used to trap the unsuspecting leader of gatchaman.

casey kasem and keye luke are very talented no doubt, but i wasn't happy with this shoody repoduction of one of the best classic anime series since mach go-go (speed racer).

thank god for rhino realeasing the original version for a very low price courtesy of amazon.com

enjoy! (0=

5 out of 5 stars An AMAZING cross-culture comparison.......2003-06-03

Even if you never watched Battle of the Planets, you should get this set just to see how vastly different the Japanese version was from the US version. It is jaw-dropping how much they felt the had to "sanitize" - things that Japanese children could handle, that US children could not.

[...]Both episodes on this DVD set are very eye opening, and would be a great discussion point for any aged viewer, to talk about just why those changes were made and if the awful stereotypes that resulted were perhaps worse than the "violence" they removed.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of a classic series.......2004-12-04

I loved this series as a kid and now, as an adult, I love it still. This set contains one of my favorite eps, the Fierce Flowers, which was a 2-parter. Unlike the prior DVD's, however, there are no Gatchaman or G-Force versions. Unfortunately, Rhino lost the rights to Gatchaman so any future DVD's are unlikely to contain them either. But, all in all, a great collection!! Not much in the way of special features but you get a lot of episodes in exchange.

4 out of 5 stars Sanitized, but good........2004-10-16

BOTP was one of my favourite cartoons as a child. Unfortunatly pricing and a lack of cohesive packaging turned me off to the idea of purchasing this series. But now everything is coming together at the same time, a great price and a compact size and a good quantity of episodes (14) made this collection very hard to resist. And it includes two episodes that were etched in my mind THE GALAXY GIRLS and THE FIERCE FLOWERS. As an adult the americanization of the series is very annoying, adding an insipid R2D2 knockoff as a narrator and having people say things like "the REMOTE CONTROLLED planes have been destroyed" over and over is just very lame, WE GET IT NO ONE DIES EVER!!! Overall if the next set is inexpensive and has a good amount of episodes i will continue to purchase this series.EP

I'd never purchased anime before when I spotted the Battle of the Planets 25th Anniversary set while out shopping. BATTLE OF THE PLANETS! I had many great times as a kid dreaming about these characters and pretending to be them. This DVD set was a must have and I hadn't seen this show in 25 years so it was quite a flashback. The voice talent on this show was really impressive and it's wonderful to see Zoltan (Keye Luke really is fantastic and his performance makes his role one of the all time great cartoon bad guys) and my childhood heroes the G-Force (all fine performers who are perfect) and 7Zark7 (Alan Young really shines). Watching these DVDs has brought back so many great memories. Thanks Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Entertaining!.......2006-07-24

All the TINY PLANET'S BING & BONG stories are wonderful, entertaining, and educational. There are no spoken "languages", so all toddlers on up can enjoy each story and fall in love with the two main characters, easily...not to mention--their parents, too! The graphics, music, and action are all top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie.......2006-07-03

I love this series. I was so pleased to find this on DVD. My son watches this all the time and he learns many things. I am looking forward to the next DVD. I would recommend this to any parent who has children of pre-school age.

4 out of 5 stars Cute white furry aliens and some learning too........2005-11-03

Tiny Planets is a computer-animated show for the toddler to Kindergarten set starring two cute fuzzy aliens named Bing & Bong. Another alien, Halley, narrates Bing and Bong through their adventures on each of the six tiny planets they visit (Self, Sound, Light and Color, Nature, Technology, & Stuff) . The DVD is broken down into 2 episodes featuring several shorter segments (under 10 minutes a piece) based on different problems needing to be solved. It's a great tool for introducing science, shapes and problem-solving skills to young children. My 3 year old daughters love this series (they've been fans of it on Noggin since they were about 1 1/2 ) and thanks to it have impressed their preschool teacher with the knowledge gained from it. Kids especially seem to enjoy the eye-candy of the aliens on the tiny planets as well as the silent interaction between Bing and Bong. The concept of a Sofa/Bed space craft and the theme song are big plusses as well.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2005-08-15

I just love Tiny Planets. My pre-schooler and I will sit down and watch them over and over again. She learns constantly. They are teaching her useful information. She loves Bong and his crazy ways. I recommend this to anyone that has pre-school aged children and smaller.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves this dvd!!.......2005-08-14

Tiny Planets is so adorable! My son who is 23 months old loves this dvd. He loves the music and the two cute aliens named Bing and Bong. In every episode they explore one of the Tiny planets and try to help the other aliens' named Flockers living on those planets. It's really enjoy watching these dvd's with my son!

1 out of 5 stars Five stars? Get serious!.......2006-11-27

OK here's the set up. An alien spaceship that looks like a bunch of demented beach balls all strapped together comes to invade Earth. A giant flying fire-breathing turtle (Gamera) pokes at it until it floats away and springs a leak. Space Ship Number 2 is called. Meanwhile, two bratty little smartass kids who are hated by everyone else in ther scout troop including their much too old to be doing this kind of thing sister are piloting a submarine around, smiling and waving at the flying turtle. Oh yeah! In an attempt to promote racial harmony, one of the brats is Caucasian and the other is Japanese. It's kind of hard to tell until the bright red-headed mom shows up to wail "Jim! Jim!" a few times. So, the aliens show about 20 minutes of Gamera fighting other men in dinosaur suits on their "Viewtron" while they try to find out how to kill Gamera. Seems kind of silly when we learn later on that when Gamera is flipped on his back he's just about helpless! So the aliens find out that Gamera is a softy for kids, and that's when the fun begins. The kids are snatched, Gamera is mind-controlled by the aliens, there's a giant squid with a pointy nose that turns out to be the head honcho who eventually gets around to battling with Gamera. Ho hum. For crying out loud, the world is saved by a couple of kids. This is a terrible movie. One star because the kids liked it, once we got past the boring "viewtron" fight scenes which were unbelievably tacky and silly.

5 out of 5 stars Aliens, flash backs and Boy Scouts, oh my!.......2006-10-19

In Destroy All Planets the great Gamera is back. Boy, have I been watching a lot of Gamera, right? Well, anyway, aliens invade Earth and only Gamera, and some Boy Scouts, can stop them. Mind control, flash backs and the use of lots and lots of old footage. Great film to watch if you want to see all the monster fighting action of the past movies.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Dobie Smokes!.......2006-03-26

Forget the unimportant title. This movie exists by other titles that are far more descriptive, such as "Gamera vs. Viras." "Destroy All Planets" is a misnomer because there is only one planet shown in this movie, Earth, and the aliens want our planet for themselves. The aliens do want to remove those pesky humans infesting the planet, but they want to keep the planet whole so they can move in.

Gamera movies seem to have a large following among children in Japan, because children always play central roles in Gamera movies. This time we meet a crowd of boy scouts from Tokyo. Two of the boys are quite mischievous, and manage to play a prank on highly educated scientists by changing wiring connections on their mini-sub. The boys use this highly valuable lesson to later work their mischief on aliens. I believe these children later went on to government service in the diplomatic corps, personally starting two regional conflicts, fourteen incidents, thirty two letters of dismay, and an effigy burning.

After the two boys sabotage the sub, they convince the same bumbling scientists, including Dr. Dobie (played by Peter Williams), to allow them to drive the sub. Uh-huh. I wonder why we have so little trust in some researchers. These people are unable to prevent a couple of kids from sabotaging their multi-million dollar submersible. Once the submersible is sabotaged, they are unable to figure out how the children did it. Then, to add icing to the cake, these same people allow the children to pilot the sub. I have to wonder whether the name Dr. Dobie is a birth name, or perhaps was a name given to him after something he may have smoked in college. I am just speculating, but after his actions with the two boys, you have to wonder where this guy's head was at.

While the boys are taking a pleasure cruise in an expensive piece of research equipment, they encounter the giant turtle Gamera, also known as Gammera, who manages to make growly noises in outer space, walk upright, and shoot flames out of his leg holes. Gamera is one talented turtle.

Somewhere early in this movie we are introduced to spaceship #1, which Gamera toasts with a move worthy of "professional" wrestling. Soon we are introduced to spaceship #2, which has a crew of not-so-bright people and a guy in an octopus costume. After the boys return from their three hour tour, the weather started getting rough, and their tiny sub was tossed, and if it wasn't for the spirit of the fearless...wait, wrong story. Sorry. Getting back on track, the boys cheer on Gamera, only to fall into the clutches of the evil aliens on spaceship #2. The aliens prove about as bright as Dr. Dobie, which makes you wonder whether they were inhaling during the flight.

Early guys-in-monster-suits-destroying-Japan-models movies were often quite sincere. The original "Godzilla" and "Gamera the Invincible" are two movies that tried hard to have a good story and a good scare factor. By the time this movie came out, the studio had thrown sincerity out in favor of a children's fantasy. With the children running the movie, the movie is often either intentionally or unintentionally funny. In either case, this movie becomes a mediocre entry in the people in costumes monster movie genre.

The sound and picture quality are reasonably for this 1971 film, though the film could be re-mastered with modern technology. The studio kept the budget low by using scenes from earlier Gamera movies, even though some of the reused scenes were in black and white. The version I have is pan and scan rather than wide screen, which could be another addition if the original films are located.

Even though this low-budget flick is flawed, I recommend it to fans of Gamera movies, and fans of Japanese monster movies. The plot is a re-hash of earlier and later plots, but the formula has worked for dozens of films. Why mess with success? Good luck!

I am conflicted; the movie was okay when compared to the later trilogy done in the 1990's that rocked! I heard that the early movies, or Showa movies weren't as good as the later ones, and that's true. The movie is good, but the movie has two flashbacks that show Gamera's previous fights from other movies, and it gets boring to see the same thing you have seen before on a movie you haven't. This also ruins the fight outcomes from the other movies if you watch this and haven't seen the other because they show how Gamera beat all of the other monsters. Good plot twist and a surprise at the end of the movie make this not a complete downer. I have to admit, the ending was good when you find out about the aliens and who and what they are. It was also a big surprise to find out who the leader of the aliens really was. They did a good job on that. So overall the movie is good, but it is boring to watch old fights again.

Okay, this is a distgusting and sickening film! Aliens invade earth and somehow offspring a octopus creature that was created from the ocean. Supposeldy the aliens reproduced and had the creature. I don't want to know how. Then the monster destroys the rest of Japan, and China. He is almost invinciable. Then Gamera decides to kill the aliens in space. gamera kills them which triggers the monster on earth to die. Gamera goes to earth and he begins to save three kids named Tomo, Sika, and Inoshiro. Gamera almost kills the kids by steping on their house and then he burns woods to ge to another city. Gamera also finds the octopus' offspring and it is exactly the same. Gamera eats it and i beleive by my eyes i saw him pee on its carcas. What the??!!!Gamera even tears his suite and i see the actor. Its horrible! Then about hundreds of alien ships come and Gamera uses one fireball and kills them all. He then dances! What the! He dances and he sings some stupid song and the government sign a treaty with Gamera! What the hell? That is stupid! Then the end! After that i just did an outline in lame terms: ALiens make their offsrping. Japan burns. Gamera kills the monster in Yokohama. Gamera saves the kids almost merely killing them. Gamera pees on the monster's carcas. Gamera kills the offsrping of the octopus. Gamera burns the alien ships. Gamera sings and dances. Gamera signs a treaty and uses a pen! Gamera then flys to the sun! The End Good i hope he burned!

I rate this a 1 not for the quality of the show or DVD, but for the need to have a complete DVD set. As with the DC Animated universe, many fans of this show will not buy the individual DVDs and will hold their money until a complete series run is released for purchase in the US. I am one.

Release a complete series set and I will buy it in a heartbeat. Otherwise, Rhino, you're wasting time and money.

Battle of the Planets is the best cartoon I grew up with and thank the story line for opening the doors to creativity. Today I am thankful for Battle of the Planets that helped develop me as a writer and an artist... we sure need more artists and writers out there...and creativity.

Why are we being left out here in the US while all of Europe can buy the entire series "Battle of the Planets" for their region? I want Battle of the Planets... Rhino animation get it in gear and stop teasing us!!!Release the series, please....

After ordering this item I had second thoughts after reading how others had rated this box set. Some had said the sound and picture quality was'nt that good.I also was'nt sure if I would have to watch all episodes with subtitles.Come to find out you get the cartoon in english and in Japanese which is good because I would'nt have enjoyed it as much watching all in Japanese with english subtitles. As a kid I loved this cartoon and everything was just as I remember.Sound and picture were fine.If you to loved Battle of the Planets I would recommend this box set.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that has to be seen in its original form.......2004-09-03

This is a great DVD set. I loved Battle of the Planets growing up and I find that now I love the original Japanese version EVEN MORE (no 7-Zark-7, continuing storylines, character development and way more action and SCIENCE). It is really great to be able to see how the story was originally intended. The subtitles for the Gatchaman episodes are great and MUCH BETTER than a Gatchaman DVD i was able to get off of EBay!! Defintely get these first so you have some of idea of what the characters names really are before you buy any Gatchaman DVD's.

For those who complained that there were eps missing, they were not BofP eps that were missing. The eps are numbered based on the corresponding Gatchaman eps. Unfortunately, of the 105 Gatchaman eps, only 85 were made into BotP, so the numbers skip when there is no corresponding BotP episode. But don't worry, you're not missing any BotP eps.
