5 out of 5 stars KISSOLGY 2 IS GONNA ROCK!!!.......2007-07-04

I look foward to this so much! Kiss Meets The Phantom is so cool I have a bootleg I bought of it & The Largo show (the only bonus disc Im getting)!
I watched Vs the Phantom the first time on TV I had a 13" panasonic B/W TV in my room my parants wouldnt watch it with me in the frontroom!

I think KISS should have never taken they're makeup off I bought the CDs but just preteneded they didnt. It was like Batman going on TV & taking off his cowl!
I didnt want to know they're secret identities. There they were without they're super powers as ordinary mortals.

I had to buy all 3 last time to get all the bonus discs & next one I am sure will be reunion shows bonus discs so I will have to get all 3!

I dont want to watch them without makeup so I am excited I only gotta buy 1 copy!

Does anybody know where the Largo Bonus disc will be?

5 out of 5 stars Solid Follow Up To Vol. 1.......2007-07-04

KISSology Vol. 1 was one of the greatest music DVD's ever released. A tremendous collection of great, vintage KISS concerts and TV apperances, KISSology really raised the bar when it comes to career retrospectives on DVD.

Now, KISS is releasing (or has released, depending on when you read this), the 2nd volume in the KISSology series, covering 1978-1991. It's got almost everything from that era that fans have wanted on DVD (almost, there are some exceptions) - The Land of Hype and Glory, The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder (Ace is a RIOT), Australia 1980, FRIDAYS (!!!), Brazil 1983, a couple songs from the first post-makeup concert, and a complete concert from one of their greatest tours ever - the Hot In The Shade tour! Leon Sphinx was pretty darned cool as the centerpiece, and the band was ON!

There are some other goodies, but the one I intentionally left out until now is KISS in ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS - the European theatrical version of KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. Supposedly there are scenes cut from the US version, and the score is different in parts as well. This will be a lot of fun to watch - as long as you "get it." It's a 70's campy TV movie, and for that time and genre it is a lot of fun.

The DVD ends with the passing of the great Eric Carr (I had the opportunity to meet him in 1990 - he truly was a great guy, and he is very much missed), leaving the Revenge era for Vol. 3.

Could there be more on there from the 80's? Animalize Live Uncensored is a glaring omission, as is anything from the entertaining Asylum tour, but this is still one heck of a tracklisting and another great release!

5 out of 5 stars Largo MD.......2007-07-03

I am so psyched for this but a couple of things trouble me:

1. The Largo Capital Centre 1979 should be a given but from what i hear it will be only a bonus disc on some releases?

2. If they are including Kiss Meets The Phantom they should also include the Animalize Live concert. Both are good for a laugh! Gene's wig alone in the Animalize tour is hilarious, not to mention that concert has some of the best crowd footage since Heavy Metal Parking Lot!

4 out of 5 stars where's the "animalize" concert?.......2007-06-29

I know this will still be a set worth having, but they really should include the animalize concert from 1984. I don't think Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons liked these years very much. Gene had gone hollywood and really didn't contribute much to the band. Paul really kept the band together at the time and is the reason they survived the 80'S. Maybe that's why they're doing a rush job on the 80'S and jump to the "Hot in the shade" tour.
I'm also glad they decided to include "Kiss meets the phantom of the park". I have the old goodtimes VHS copy and it's pretty worn out. I just hope they clear it up and remaster it. I had a feeling they wouldn't include the "Dynasty" concert only because the footage they have isn't very good quality. Instead, we get the concert they did in 1980, which is just as good.
I always thought the concert they did in rio in 1983 was a full concert, but i guess it isn't. I will mention that you may want to wait and see what's going to be on the bonus disk included at certain retailers. Kiss did this with the first volume. If you don't care, pre-order today.

3 out of 5 stars KISSOLOGY Volume II...You Wanted the Best, You Got The, well, ummm............2007-06-26

Ok, let me see if I got this right....volume I had FOUR complete concerts on only TWO dvds...volume II will have only TWO complete concerts on THREE dvds???!!! What's wrong with this picture?

I suspect that I'm not alone when I express my disappointment with the track listing on the KISSology volume II. I believe that 13 years is too many years to cover on a 3 dvd set...especially when you take into consideration the amount of video footage KISS has hidden in their vault. There's no reason why they can't include a pro-shot concert from each and every tour. We KNOW the footage exists! What are they waiting for? This is their chance to give back to the loyal KISS Army. We've been waiting too long for these dvd sets and now that they're finally here, we're still getting short changed! Where's the Dynasty Tour? Any Elder footage, besides the Friday's stuff...? A FULL Creatures show?? Asylum show? Yeah, we're getting a full Unmasked show, which is HUGE!, but there's room for so much more. As far as including the Crazy Nights show from Japan, any KISS fan has had that show on vhs for nearly 15 years already. Same goes for "Phantoms".

And while they're giving us stuff we already have, how about, at least, a complete music video collection restored/remastered?

I think KISS could have done a much better job on volume II after doing such a great job on volume I. I know this review is based soley on the track listing that's been revealed, but a true KISS fan will be left wanting much, much more after viewing volume II.

Maybe we'll get lucky and a few of the bonus discs will have some real rare footage.

Meg Ryan emerges bloodied but unbowed from this botched comedy by Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill). Ryan plays a woman whose fiancé (Timothy Hutton) leaves her for a Parisian beauty. She jets over to the City of Lights to fight for her man, but an incapacitating fear of flying forces her to seek help from a fellow passenger, a French thief played by Kevin Kline, who then tutors her in the ways of getting her beau back. Kasdan seems incapable of pacing the story, let alone getting a firm grip on its comic tone and intentions. The production sputters and regroups and stalls repeatedly, forcing Ryan, particularly, to find the boundaries of her own screwball performance. --Tom Keogh

Description

Meg Ryan ("Sleepless in Seattle") and Kevin Kline ("Dave") star in this bouncy romantic comedy about life, love and larceny. When her fiancé is smitten by a beautiful Frenchwoman, Kate (Ryan) flies to Paris determined to win him back. However, nothing prepares her for Luc (Kline), a cunning sexy Frenchman with a gift for gab and a fondness for thievery. A self-proclaimed expert on affairs of the heart, Luc promises to help Kate win back her man. But one star-crossed misadventure after another sweeps them across France, ultimately changing them in ways they never dreamed possible.

This movie isn't one that I would go to the movies to see, but is worth watching on a rainy afternoon at home. It's cute, and will do in a pinch. I'd buy it again for that purpose.

My college roommates and I watched the VHS version of this movie so many times we wore the tape out. Bad day at the internship, boyfriend broke up with you, need a good movie to nap to while skipping class...this is your movie! I was so happy to find it on Amazon and even happier that it arrived so quickly and in brand new condition!

5 out of 5 stars Comical Romance.......2007-03-21

I just love this movie. I have seen it at least 10 times if not more and it is one that i just have not tired of. It's a great blend of comedy and romance. Meg Ryan and Kevin Klien make an interesting couple and the scattering of other French and Euro charters makes this a must have for my little library of romance movies.

As a screenwriter, Shane Black made millions of dollars from screenplays for the big-budget action movies Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, among others. With his directing debut Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Black mocks and undercuts every cliche he once helped to invent. While fleeing from the cops, small time hood Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr., Wonder Boys) stumbles into an acting audition--and does so well he gets taken to Hollywood, where--pursuing a girl he loved in high school (foxy Michelle Monaghan, North Country)--he gets caught up in twisty murder mystery. His only chance of getting out alive is a private detective named Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, Wonderland, The Doors), who sidelights as a consultant for movies. No plot turn goes untweaked by Black's clever, witty script, and Downey, Kilmer, and Monaghan clearly have a ball playing their screwball variations on action movie stereotypes. There's nothing profound about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but it brings back wicked mischief to a genre that all often takes itself too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

Description

In Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a breezy take on writer-director Shane Black's trademark buddy action/comedy oeuvre, a petty thief (Robert Downey Jr.) is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, along with his high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) and a detective (Val Kilmer) who has been training him for his upcoming role.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this movie! Witty dialogue, wild action and a fun ride for movie-lovers!.......2007-06-18

Writer Shane Black has always crafted films that may be a little too quirky and over-the-top for the mass audience, but I love his love for film and talent for dialogue which are on display in his directorial debut.

After a botched robbery, the RDJ character stumbles into a film audition, which leads to an LA oddessey. In the course of it, bullets, dead bodies and a severed finger start to pile up, as the case turns into a cheap detective novel - not unlike the kind the characters riff about in the movie.

I found "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" to be a real treat for cinema-philes who like smart characters and a bit of the "breaking the fourth wall" feel. Admittedly, the plot is a little loose, and really only exists to facilitate the action (Noires sometimes have plot issues - see The Big Sleep & Night Moves for examples - so many twists). The movie takes itself just seriously enough to be wild but coherent. The "LA flare" and the fact that the actors seem to be having so much fun made this a fun view for me. RDJ & Val Kilmer (who steals a few scenes of his own) are great together, and Michelle Monaghan was witty, fun and nice to look at. This is the kind of fun film experience I enjoy & miss in the garbage they churn out in Hollywood now - really dug it.

1 out of 5 stars We Didn't Like It!.......2007-06-05

Wow! If they had left the "F" word out of this movie, there wouldn't have been much dialog!!!! Could have been great, but our poor ears were cringing! Not even funny. What a disappointment. There are a lot better comedies out there.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise........2007-05-12

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Shane Black, 2005)

I sometimes forget that under Robert Downey, Jr.'s deeply troubled exterior lies a world-class actor. Then I see one of his good movies, and the late eighties come flooding back. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, despite its awkward title (and how strange is it that this is the sixth movie to carry that title?), is definitely one of those.

Downey plays Harry Lockhart, a small-time crook who stumbles into the beginnings of an acting career while fleeing from some nasty men with guns. Lockhart is transplanted to the other side of the country and under consideration for the lead in a detective series; in order to get him some ideas about what happens on the job, he gets paired up with real private detective Perry (Val Kilmer). Meanwhile, he's run into Harmony (Unfaithful's Michelle Monaghan), the girl he had a major crush on in high school who went out to Hollywood to become an actress. Perry is planning on keeping Harry out of danger, but the two of them quickly become embroiled in an ugly, complex case.

I don't watch too many comedies; not because I don't like them, but because I prefer other genres of film. So I don't laugh terribly much when watching movies. This month, though, I've laughed more at movies than I have in the past year. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was half the reason. (He Died with a Felafel in His Hand was the other half.) Kilmer and Downey are great foils for one another, and both have very good timing here. Add in a few overly weird minor characters and the mother of all Rube Goldbergian plots, and you've got yourself a winner. No one will mistake this for deathless cinema, but then again, it never aspires to be. *** ½

4 out of 5 stars Clever tribute to crime pix delivers both laughs and thrills.......2007-04-17

"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is one of those humorous takes on the "film noir" genre that wants to have it both ways: it makes clever comments and funny asides about the conventions of the genre (mostly via voiceover narration) while, at the same time, wanting to tell a genuinely involving "noir" story, too. And I have to say that, for the most part, the film succeeds. While I'm not as madly in love with this movie as many of the reviewers here, I certainly didn't feel that it's the train wreck some on this site describe it to be. Discovering this on DVD, I found it to be slick, fun, and clever. Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer in particular seem to be having a lot of fun. The DVD features attractive, slickly designed menus, dynamite picture and sound, and some good extras (including a gag reel that for once is actually fun to watch). Check this one out.

3 out of 5 stars Self-conscious noir.......2007-03-28

A small-time crook (Robert Downey Jr) stumbles into an audition while running from police and ends up with a free ticket to LA, where he becomes involved in a complicated scheme along with his high school sweetheart (Michelle Monaghan) and a gay PI (Val Kilmer). There is much to enjoy here, including some laugh-out-loud moments and some enthusiastic skewering of action movie cliches. In the end, however, it is a little too cute and self-conscious, though never boring. Stick around for the credits. Robert Downey Jr. co-wrote and performs the final song.

Geena Davis and her former husband, director Renny Harlin, attempted to pick up the pieces after the debacle of their box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island. What they came up with was this repulsive ode to American film noir, based on a script by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) about an amnesiac schoolteacher (Davis) who searches for her true identity and finds she is actually a secret agent immersed in a deadly plot to topple the government. Mechanistic in its violence, obnoxious in its attitude, the film makes Davis, a once-promising actress, nothing more than a special effect. She tosses one to sadists in the audience by allowing her character to be beaten, punched unconscious, and tortured. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, plus Dolby surround sound, theatrical trailer, cast information, optional French-language soundtrack and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Movie........2007-06-16

This film is really one of the best action films Ive ever seen. It is truly fun to watch, even if you watch it over and over again. I was most surprised by Geena Davis. Her performance is actually very good as an action star. Her action and her acting were both done extremely well. Then theres Samuel L. Jackson. God, hes cool in this film. He has so many lines that are largely funny and not corny. Him and Geena have a good chemistry on screen that really makes the movie work. The action is pretty much non stop. Those action scenes are shot very nicely and they look awesome. This movie most certainly isnt meant to be taken seriously and is meant to have fun watching. It succeeds in doing so. Its a great little action film that will keep you entertained even if you watch it a dozen of times.

4 out of 5 stars Get the popcorn and enjoy........2007-06-12

I heard that this movie tanked at the US box office and i'm not sure why because its far better than many of the "blockbusters".
I lived in Singapore and it just ran and ran there in a couple of theaters.

Renny Harlin was married to Gena Davis at the time and it all seemed a bit incestuous and it followed the record breaking disaster that was "Cutthroat Island" so I guess nobody in the "biz" wanted to go near it.

This however is a good movie. It flows well the actions scenes are great and Samuel Jackson is wonderful. I'd never heard of him but Craig Bierko makes a great villain and I cant see why he hasnt done more. Yes there are plot holes but no more than the average Tarantino movie.

I would rather sit through a rerun of of this than have to watch Spiderman 3 ever again.

4 out of 5 stars About Twin Towers.......2007-04-22

I saw this movie and it held my attention from the beginning, as well. But, I was very surprised about the statement made about blowing up the Twin Towers and blaming it on the Muslims.
Does anyone remember that? It was near the middle of the movie. Interesting, because the movie was made during the mid-90's and the Towers were actually blown up and it was blamed on Muslims.

5 out of 5 stars One Great Action Movie.......2007-02-11

This movie is over the top, smartly written, and perfectly made. It is Renny Harlin's masterpiece, and my favorite Samuel Jackson movie. The screenplay by Shane Black is complex and full of smart, funny dialog. The pairing of Davis and Jackson is very enjoyable, and the action scenes are some of the best ever in action movie history. Unrealistic? Yes. One of those movies you can watch over and over and never get sick of it? To me, yes. Harlin is a brilliant director when given the decent material he needs to work with; This is one of his most shining moments. Great ensemble cast, cinematography, and sounds really great loud. Love the scene w/Jackson on Larry King. That is some funny stuff. A must for every action movie fan.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie--Lousy DVD transfer.......2007-01-18

I really like this movie. Geena Davis has never been cuter, and Samuel L. Jackson has never been seedier. I really enjoyed this movie in the theater and later on tape.

Then I bought the DVD. And it stinks. It is the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. Every chapter transition pixellates during the transition. It hurts my eyes to watch it. I finally took the DVD out after 15 or 20 minutes. I've never seen a DVD do this, except for poorly-burned copies of old, scratched-up DVDs. The only redeeming factor is that I only paid $3 for it from another retailer when purchased at the same time as SOAP.

I've never seen a DVD do this. Stay away from this cheaply-made DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Royal Wedding is finally rescued from the public domain.......2007-04-26

This is the second volume of MGM Dream Factory musicals. Only "That's Dancing" and "Royal Wedding" are on DVD already, and those are generally poor public domain copies. The other five features have only been on VHS up to now. I'd put all of these movies except "Belle of New York" at between four and five stars if you are a fan of the MGM musicals of the 40's and 50's. "Belle of New York" I'd put at between three and four stars mainly because the campiness of the entire production gets in the way most of the time. Considering you expect some gimmicks in MGM musicals of this era, that is saying a lot. The extra features, which I got from a press release from Warner Home Video, do look good. This package probably rates 4.5 stars taken as a whole, and I round it up to five. The following are brief descriptions of the films and the special features for each one.

The Pirate (1948) Starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. Features music by Cole Porter. A swashbuckling tale is largely just a framework for the music and dancing, which is excellent. Judy Garland plays a girl obsessed with a legendary pirate. Gene Kelly pretends to be that pirate in order to get the girl. This film actually lost money for MGM in its initial release. Today it is interesting because it showcases the talents of Gene Kelly and Judy Garland so well.

That's Dancing! (1985) is a documentary along the same lines as "That's Entertainment" narrated by Gene Kelly along with co-hosts Ray Bolger, Sammy Davis Jr., Mikhail Baryshnikov and Liza Minnelli. The clips of dancing in motion pictures from the 30's to the 80's are very good, but the presentation was lacking somewhat. The narration seems deadpan, and when the narration cuts into the actual dancing numbers it is distracting more than informative.

Words and Music (1948) features lots of stars as themselves performing to the music of Rodgers and Hart. This is a totally fictional account of the lives and careers of Rodgers and Hart. In 1948 the true story would have never made it past the censors, but then the commentary is supposed to clear all of that up.

That Midnight Kiss (1949) Starring Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza. This is another MGM musical with a great supporting cast that largely exists for the sake of the music, not the plot. There are some great operatic performances by Lanza who is starring in what turns out to be a pseudo-autobiography.

Toast Of New Orleans (1950) Starring Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza. This time Lanza is a fisherman when his talent as a singer is discovered, and he and Grayson are in New Orleans, thus the title. This is a light breezy film with touches of comedy, delivered somewhat surprisingly by Lanza.

Royal Wedding (1951) Starring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell. My favorite film of the group. A brother and sister act perform in England at the time of then Princess Elizabeth's wedding. They both fall in love, thus breaking up the act. This has Astaire's famous performance in which he dances on the walls and ceiling of his London hotel room.

The Belle of New York (1952) Starring Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen. This is actually a disappointing film considering Astaire is in it. Although Astaire dances more in this film than in most of the others he made, it is just hard to get past the campiness of it all - literally dancing on air, dancing on a horse's back, etc. There is some great music from Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer, though.

With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, 50 First Dates set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issue altogether. It's a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can't quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favor of easy laughs. Like Barrymore's character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you've seen it. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars She only sings on days after she's been with you...........2007-07-06

I know I messed that line up somehow but the sentiment is the same. This romantic comedy is quirky, cute and absolutely sugar sweet. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have onscreen chemistry that rivals Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in this movie about a woman who is forced to live in the past because each day is like a repeat of the day before.

Injured in an auto accident years ago, Barrymore is now being cared for by her father and brother, who take precautions to make sure every day is exactly the same. Why? Because for Drew Barrymore is IS exactly the same. Every night she goes to sleep and every morning she wakes up with no memory of the day that has just passed. She thinks it is the morning of her car wreck. (Note: she has no memory of the wreck. She thinks it is apparently the time frame BEFORE the wreck... It is as if the trauma of the wreck is simply too much for her mind to grasp. )

When Adam Sandler steps into the picture, things begin to change. Subtle differences occur, much in the same way difference occur for Bill Murray, a la Groundhog's Day. Ultimately what transpires is a deepening of affection and a crossroads in life.

Adam Sandler must choose. Can he truly live with a woman who can't remember him? If she can't remember him, how can she truly love him? Some how it all works out and the conclusion is both funny and tear-jerking.

This is not a bad date movie if I do say so myself.

4 out of 5 stars A comedy that delivers the funny with some unexpected warmth and charm..........2007-06-25

In the long line of men who act like children Adam Sandler is probably the most successful. Here, with `50 First Dates' he gives us a good reason as to why. Coupled with the talented Drew Barrymore he wonderfully crafts a funny yet sincere romantic comedy that whops a wallop of a tear jerking ending. The chemistry between the two stars is impeccable and believable despite the beauty factor of Barrymore and the goofy factor of Sandler. They work wonderfully together and Barrymore has proven to get the best out of Sandler for the second time. Arguably their first pairing in `The Wedding Singer' is a better movie, but that's arguable since this little gem is just as funny and just as sweet.

The story is one that could have gone either way in the genre department. Barrymore's character Lucy is a beautiful Hawaiian native who attracts the attention of playboy Henry Roth, a native who entertains tourist women with good times and one night stands and loves the bachelorhood he's built for himself. Lucy is different though, she's otherworldly to Roth in a way, so much different than the girls he's used to being with. Lucy's main difference though is not anything Henry would have expected. Lucy has no short term memory. In fact she lives everyday as if it were the same day, going to sleep and waking up on her fathers birthday, the day she suffered a horrendous accident that caused her to lose her ability to remember anything after that point. This same plotline could have made a brilliant drama, but I'm glad they went funny with this one.

After Roth finds out Lucy's problem he makes a special effort each day to make her fall in love with him again, not for the sheer satisfaction of the chase but because there's something about Lucy that he can't let go of. He loves this girl. At first her father and brother are indifferent to the idea, opposed even, but when they see the positive effect that Henry is having on Lucy they decide that maybe this isn't such a bad idea.

Adam Sandler, while still giving the audience the slapstick and comedy they are used to, delivers a more mature performance than most of his other comedic films. His relationship with Barrymore's character is much more sympathetic then in previous films and is one the audience can get behind and cheer for. Barrymore though upstages Sandler every step of the way delivering an on point comedic performance that will make any fan proud. She's beautiful, sweet, sincere and hilarious. The supporting actors all do a fine job, Rob Schneider delivering most of the big laughs as Ula the pot smoking father of a small tribe of children. Blake Clark and Sean Astin are good as Lucy's father and brother and Pomaika'i Brown is hilarious as `tattoo face', the chief at the local restaurant where Lucy and Henry meet.

There are some one-liners in this film that almost take away from the effortless hilarity of the balance of the film. Dan Aykroyd has resorted to painful roles and this is one of them, a role littered with dialog that's hard to listen to without cringing, and that Hawaiian native who gives the audience language lessons is more than annoying. Aside from this minor downfall the audience will have a great time watching Henry's pathetic attempts at swooning Lucy, Ula's hilarious attempts at helping him, not to mention his pathetic advice, but I'm sure nothing will give the audience more pleasure than trying to decide just what gender Henry's horny associate really is!

5 out of 5 stars Falling in love for the first time, everyday, for the rest of your life and maybe even crying... .......2007-06-09

After "The Wedding Singer" the Sandler-Barrymore duo do it again with their wonderful on-screen chemistry and an adorable story. The movie also makes you think philosophically. Actually many people in life whose actions are still very mechanical and robot like, live a life as Drew does in this movie. However unlike Drew there are none to tell these people what's wrong with their lives. However it is also tragic to think that one day she has to wake up somewhere in her 60's and realise that her father died and then relive that everyday. The same feeling would multiply if more of her loved ones were to die before her. The other thing to imagine is that someone ought to ensure her daily treatment continued till she died.

Then there are those unforgettable numbers from the 80's, particularly "Lovesong" and "Friday I'am in love" by the amazing, The Cure, "Drive" by The Cars, "Hold me now" from the Thomson Twins, The Police's "Every breath You take" and Spandau Ballet's "True" which was also featured in "The Wedding Singer". Most of these numbers this time are played as cover songs by newer artistes making the soundtrack to this movie another big seller. "Could you be loved" the original by Bob Marley is retained though. And like "The Wedding Singer" there's that adorable song from Adam Sandler as well.

Hawaii is pictured so beautifully that the movie literally promotes tourism for this lovely island.

Several other characters also deserve praise. Henry's Hawaiian Friend, Lucy's brother (played by the guy who plays Frodo's friend in "Lord of the Ring",series), the Chef at the restaurant, the owner of the restaurant, the Drew's father and Henry's assistant at the zoo.

A movie that can make you laugh as much as it can bring a tear to your eyes, see it if you haven't seen it yet.

4 out of 5 stars Very cute and worth the purchase price.......2007-05-29

I have not been disappointed in the duo Sandler/Barrymore so far, their movies have been rather good, they have the chemistry. This is one of those cute movies that gets you to laugh from time to time and even think about how your life can be different. Sometimes you wonder if these two characters would really get together in real life, but then realize it's just a movie that you can watch for the entertainment of it. It's in my collection and I think you will want it in yours as well after you watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Equal Parts Romantic and Comedy.......2007-04-15

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore give memorable performances in this very funny romantic comedy. Don't worry guys this isn't a total chick flick just kinda. This movie was shot in the very beautiful state of Hawaii. Of course the Sandman makes this movie very worth buying.

A remake of the Italian film L'Ultimo Bacio, The Last Kiss was largely ignored in theaters despite its Gen-X themes and appeal of star Zach Braff (Scrubs), who last made a splash in theaters with his similar twentysomething angst film Garden State. A drama about midlife crises (mostly for people approaching 30, that is), director Tony Goldwyn (A Walk on the Moon) has assembled a top-notch cast, but there's not enough likeability in the characters to care. Architect Michael (Zach Braff) is a commitmentphobe who wanders into a flirtation with coed Kim (Rachel Bilson) because he's gun-shy about settling down with his perfect girlfriend Jenna (Jacinda Barrett), who's expecting his child. His fellow pals face their own romantic crossroads; one (Michael Weston) desires to settle down with a woman who doesn't love him back; another (Eric Christian Olsen) can't find someone who just wants a meaningless fling like him; and the third (Casey Affleck), ponders leaving his weary wife who's constantly berating his shortcomings as a father. Most depressing is Jenna's mother (Blythe Danner), who's tired of feeling neglected by her stoic husband (Tom Wilkinson). Danner and Wilkinson are compelling as longtime marrieds who've lost their spark, but Braff's character is wholly unlikeable, even aside from his indiscretions. The bright spot is Bilson, in her first movie role, utterly adorable as the sexy college student who's got more parts vulnerability and sass than any stuck in the Other Woman role. There's some fine acting in The Last Kiss, but not enough character development to care about anything they're going through.

The DVD includes a commentary featuring cast members Braff, Barrett, Olsen, Bilson, and director Goldwyn, who all mainly hoot during Olsen's sex scenes and ogle Bilson's seductive dancing. Braff and Goldwyn also imitate Bilson's high-pitched speedchatter throughout, while Barrett educates the cast on the similarities between "the dingo ate my baby" and the O.J. Simpson case (don't ask). It's all the more entertaining compared to a separate commentary track with just Goldwyn and Braff, who mostly drones about the music he picked for the film (Remy Zero, Snow Patrol, Aimee Mann) and raves about the minimalist score, done by singer Michael Penn. And oh, they ogle Bilson's dancing in this one too. -- Ellen A. Kim

Description

"The Last Kiss" is a hip romantic comedy about life, love, infidelity, forgiveness, marriage, friendship… and coming to grips with turning 30.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Depressing train wreck.......2007-07-07

I feel that you don't have to glorify the acts of people behaving like selfish children. But that's just what this movie does. Could the characters in the movie be any more unlikeable? Is this movie meant to be a warning against doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons, or a indulgence in justifying them? I couldn't have been more depressed after forcing myself to watch this train wreck of a movie. It is the polar opposite of Garden State, which is truly sad, as Garden State is truly sublime. I have to say that I still really think Zach is a great actor, but man, think before choosing your next project please! I had to get rid of the dog of a dvd as soon as I could, I just feel guilty for the unsuspecting person that buys mine from the used rack.

4 out of 5 stars ZACH BRAFF , You're Amazing.......2007-07-03

Last Kiss is one of those achingly good films that don't get recognition but that is the underlying importance of the film, the fact that they were not meant to appeal to all audiences.

The story is about a boldly content man with a perfect life and wife. The most sultry and inviting of young beauties happens to chance upon him and then onwards the film has it's own beat. The start of the film is catchy, the boldness of the characters is hardly forgettable, the imperfect cinematography, the impracticality of the situations, the music of the film and the way it's most painful scenes make you laugh out loud all help ensure a pleasant viewing experience.

Interestingly, Last Kiss doesn't try to take a stand and get over emphatic about promiscuity and otherwise, but it does actually leave quite an impact on the viewer. I think this is one of those films I'd like to own. 3.5 stars is fine with me and maybe I'm just a big Zach Braff fan.

About Zach Braff, now. I like how he tries to distance himself from trouble but slips further into it. But, I must add, I thought Rachel Bilson's character was the standalone winner of the film. I think the direction is lovely and it helped portrait her with much finesse and persona. The unpleasant tweaks in the film make me want to watch it again. Yes, I might buy it, I repeat.

4 out of 5 stars I'll sit on this porch until you talk to me...(4.5).......2007-06-27

With The Last Kiss we have yet another movie that was marketed wrong. Given what was presented in the previews upon its release most of us were led to believe it'd be a pretty funny movie. Not so. There are parts where you laugh a bit but this is much more in the vein of an actual drama than anything else. So going in expecting a drama would work wonders in your post-viewing conversations. Had they marketed it that way I think it would've been recieved a lot better than it originally was.

I won't lie, what led me to wanting to see The Last Kiss rested solely on Zach Braff's shoulders. He's excellent in Scrubs and, while it took getting use to, he really pulled off the serious/depressed role that Garden State called for with flying colors. "How bad can The Last Kiss possibly be?" I was left wondering. Not too shabby it turns out. I'm a guy and I'm comfortable in saying that I can thoroughly enjoy myself whilst watching a 'chick flick.' That's exactly what The Last Kiss is and it's not ashamed of that one bit.

Everyone knows the plot...a 29 year-old has everything he wanted. A great job, an amazing girlfriend, great friends. He can't help but think by following through with this life that there won't be anymore surprises. Enter Rachel Bilson. She turns his world upside down and he finds himself questioning just what it is he really wants. Sounds good right? I thought so too. Heck, even throwing in the fact that his friends are having serious domestic problems as well was okay with me. But I could not stand the storyline following Blythe Danner and how she pretty much ruins her marriage because her husband doesn't look at her like "he has to have her." Take that out and this movie would have been darn near perfect.

As for the rest of the cast, there's no real glaring fault. Surprisingly enough, even Rachel Bilson was really good in her role which I simply didn't expect. It comes as no surprise though that Zach Braff stole every scene he was in. The chemistry between him and Jacinda Barrett was great and seeing Zach walk into situations he should've known better than to walk into gives this movie that human touch.

Basically, if you hate chick flicks don't even think about watching this. If you don't mind a chick flick though and are looking for a movie where even though the lead actor messes up time after time and you're left yelling at your TV yet you still want him to end up with her, you just found that movie.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Comedy.......2007-06-16

Sadly, I think perhaps this movie would have been better received had it not been billed as a romantic comedy. It's not funny at all! It is a rather sad story about fears and dysfunctional relationships - and actually does a fairly decent job at that - but humor or comedy? No way.

1 out of 5 stars Not very interesting.......2007-06-07

The movie is a bit disappointing, especially for those who have seen "L'ultimo bacio", the original italian version. Unfortunately, Zach Braff is not Stefano Accorsi. Labored screenplay + actors without any charisma = boring movie. No interest.

Coming after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, this thriller about a collaboration between two serial killers feels like a pale attempt to cash in on the success of those earlier, better films. That's a pity, because this film certainly has its strengths--particularly in the central performances of Morgan Freeman as a forensic detective and Ashley Judd as a would-be victim who escaped from one of the killers. Director Gary Fleder demonstrates visual flair and maintains an involving undercurrent of tension, but as this adaptation of James Patterson's novel approaches its climax, familiar elements combine to form a chronic case of thriller déjà vu. It's altogether competent filmmaking in the service of a moribund story of competing psychopaths, and by the time the serial killers reach the home stretch of their twisted contest, the movie's dangerously close to Freddy Kruger territory, with a finale that could've been borrowed from any dozen similar thrillers. --Jeff Shannon

love the suspense. It's wonderful to see who the abductor/killer is. Ashely Judd does wonderful in this.

3 out of 5 stars Kiss the Girls.......2007-01-24

The movie is a great thirller outside of the language content I would have rated it higher, I do not care for the language

4 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to your collection........2007-01-05

KISS THE GIRLS will not disappoint anyone looking to spend
90 mins transported into another space and time, mainly,
in Raleigh, North Carolina where Morgan Freeman
investigates the disappearance of a family member of his,
a bright young girl with musical training, at the same
time a rash of rapes, disappearances of certain talented
women are occuring in the so-called Research Triangle,
which was hip around the time the Y2K bug mania was
happening, back in 2000.

We see Ashley Judd, the protagonist, once again reprise
her role seen in Double Jeopardy, as a young woman faced
against all odds, to survive a terrible ordeal, having to
build physical stamina, mental determination and endurance
to overcome all of those challenges put forth.

Here again, Tony Goldwyn (earlier seen in Kuffs, also
with Judd), packs a powerful performance as an
upstanding citizen having a dark, dispicable, insidious
side to him, in participating with the sex ring-master doing
the abductions of the victims, and those horrible serial
crimes.

Quite simply, the filming quality, action sequences
indoors and outdoors, the acting, and at -times, alarming
and frightening sequences - make this movie a worthy
addition to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Meh...eh...eh..............2006-12-31

The voice of Casanova was the only thing I truely enjoyed, plus the musical score. Morgan Freeman is just fine in this movie, but I wanted more Casanova. I say, if you're going to have a masked killer, SHOW HIS MASK! Heck, show him more often.

Meh-ish-I'm glad I bought it for around 5 bucks, I still like Casanova's voice.

4 out of 5 stars Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching!.......2006-06-24

A very good movie, Kiss the Girls, sheds light on a series of disappearances of young girls in North Carolina.
There are slight hints of Seven, The Bone Collector, Resurrection, and The Silence of the Lambs so the movie falls into the action/adventure/mystery/thriller/horror type of category, though it is way far removed from that level of gore and horror.
Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd (who is GORGEOUS!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well!
Overall, though not a masterpiece it is definitely a movie worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-07-03

This collection contains eight movies that propose a different kind of suspense and horror. The most of them are filmed in color, but there are two (Paranoia and Nightmare) that were done in black and white. Although the temes are classic of the horror movies( vampires, werewolfs, etc), the style of the cinematography is different.

If you like the good horror films, this is an excellent choice.

1 out of 5 stars Should have read the other reviews before purchasing............2007-06-06

I was so excited when my Hammer Horror Series DVDs came in the mail yesterday. But when I started watching it last night, during Curse of the Werewolf, it completely froze up. I should have read the other reviews of this before purchasing. I didn't even bother to watch any of the other films because I finally read all the negative reviews and am just going to send it back. I truly hope Universal has changed from DVD-18 to DVD-9, because I was really anticipating watching these!

I hope the problem has been fixed by this time.

4 out of 5 stars Night Creatures.......2007-05-13

Remembered from my youth, really enjoyed catching up with it again. I could not get my player to play without the subtitles but it didn't spoil it.

2 out of 5 stars hammerseries.......2007-04-11

save your cash.this is a letdown collection.don't misunderstand:that's not to say that hammer studios failed to live up to their usual great standards concerning the horror movie genre;it's the powers-that- be that determine which movies go into a particular collection.no studio makes great movies with every attempt;hammer's no exception to this rule.there's really only one good movie in this collection(evil of frankenstein):brides of dracula is also passable.everything else...junk.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Discs.......2007-03-25

While I enjoyed the movies in this set that I was able to access, I had to return it because neither Evil of Frankenstein nor Curse of the Werewolf would play properly. I should have been advised by the warnings of other customers who had similar problems. Live and learn.

Cole Porter, Shakespeare, and 3-D: Not the usual recipe for an MGM musical, but hey--it works. Although it runs hot and cold, this 1953 take on Porter's delightful Broadway smash lets a chewy cast gorge on some terrific songs and show-biz in-jokes. Think of the plot as His Girl Friday in greasepaint: vain star Howard Keel wants to lure ex-wife Kathryn Grayson back to the boards with a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. The movie's weakness is too much Shakespeare, not enough backstage backbiting (and why are two of the best numbers, "So in Love" and Ann Miller's zippy "Too Darn Hot," confined to a prologue?). Then there's the tendency to throw things at the camera--3-D, what hath you wrought? The candy-store color design is great fun, and Tommy Rall and future dance titan Bob Fosse are turned loose for some sensational leaps. Now that's "Wunderbar." --Robert Horton

Description

Fred and Lilly are a divorced pair of actors who are brought together by Cole Porter who has written a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. Of course, the couple seem to act a great deal like the characters they play. A fight on the opening night threatens the production, as well as two thugs who have the mistaken idea that Fred owes their boss money and insist on staying next to him all night.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Three Leads Are Wonderful!.......2007-04-29

I can't believe I had never seen either the stage or movie version of this famous Broadway musical until now. This 1953 movie is very enjoyable because of the excellent singing, dancing, charisma and acting of the three leads - Howard Keel, Ann Miller and Kathryn Grayson. The supporting cast is fine too with great dancing and comedy bits. The story is far from politically correct (take a look at the "spanking" DVD cover) which makes it seem more than a bit dated and of course the core of the story is taken from Shakespeare. And I am not surprised to read it was originally released as a 3D film since there are lots of time when the actors throw things rather unnecessarily to the audience. Still a must see for all musical lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie.......2007-01-11

Why can't they make films like this any more? A wonderful story, a great cast and the songs are timeless. Great for a trip down memory lane!

5 out of 5 stars One of MGM's Best.......2006-11-10

Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller, Tommy Roll, Bob Fosse, Carol Haney, Keenan Wynn, James Whitmore, and music by Cole Porter. "nuff said.
Brush up your Shakespeare!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's Too Darn Hot!.......2006-08-25

I look at this film and comment to myself, could anyone else but the legendary Cole Porter write such a masterpiece. Mr. Porter was a master with the piano and his lyrics were suave and sophisticated (very much like his personality)His lyris as some would say were ahead of his time, he would suggestively wirte where you knew what he was saying, but not to the full extent of the singer or actor actually coming out and saying it. "Kiss Me Kate" was originally a Broadway show that opened in 1949, only 3 years later did they begin shooting this motion picture that were vehicles for Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel ('Seven Brides for Seven Brothers') The film (in my viewpoint) is one of the grandest musicals of the golden age and I regret that Hollywood does nothing today that live up to these high standards which moguls like L.B. Mayer and David O. Selznick set for us. The film is a true masterpiece and I find it to be almost as good as Porter's flamboyant musical "Anything Goes". You might also want to look in to buying the soundtrack of this picutre along with the 1999 Broadway Revival Cast. Enjoy Porter at his best and you'll be "So In Love" with this picture!

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun, good music, but don't buy the DVD for the extras, there aren't any.......2006-06-29

This is one of my favourite musicals (along with Seven Brides for SEven brothers). A great good natured movie which followed a hugely successful Broadway show of the same name.

Cole Porter's amusing songs set on the background of a stage musical based around Shakespeare's taming of the shrew. In the background are the ex husband and wife (Fred and Lilli - played by Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel) who are reliving their own version of Katherine and Petruchio as they figure out their own failed marriage

This is not a difficult film to watch emotionally, as you can imagine Cole Porter is not Oprah Wingrey. However it is enormoulsy good natured, I love Porter's clever lyrics and Howard Keel and Grayson are extremely good in their roles, A neat supporting cast.

There are a few stretches in some of the songs - I mean how on earth could they really imagine that 'Wunderbar' would be a great song for a shakespearian play set in Italy? Still it fits in and it is fun to watch just how they manage it - and as for teh two gangsters singing, 'Brush up your Shakespeare' rhyming Heinous with Coriolanus!

There are really no extras on this at all - if you hoped for an interview or deleted scenes then forget it, it is the movie, and a few picture scenes with a bit of information on them, nothing that you would want to buy this DVD especially for.

One of the best musicals, lots of fun and a good watch!
