Wildly romantic, daringly exciting, Michael Mann's film of James Fenimore Cooper's novel created a new babe magnet out of Daniel Day-Lewis, he of the heaving pecs and flowing mane. As Hawkeye, he plays an American settler raised by the Mohicans who is forced to serve as a guide for British adventurism in upstate New York. But the British have been outflanked by the French (and their Indian allies); then British honor is betrayed when a band of renegades assaults them during their retreat. Mann captures the viciousness of this era's hand-to-hand combat in startling battle scenes. But he also invests the film with heartfelt romance, as the feelings swell between Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. The ending is a stunner, a long, nearly wordless sequence of battle and loss. Strong performances all around, particularly by Russell Means as Chingachgook and Wes Studi as the evil Magua. --Marshall Fine

Description

An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war. Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America.

I watched this movie in the theater when it first came
out. I bought the VHS when it came out.
I loved the movie, the music, and the action. The scenery

performances by almost everyone.
When the DVD came out I wanted to get the better picture

The clearness of the scenes is great.

I was disappointed by the cuttings in the Director's
"Expanded Edition". To much was cut and not enough
was added. The VHS cinematography is close to the DVD.
You have more continuity in the movie, and don't have to
listen to Russell Means (usually brillant) ramble at the
end and make the final moments of great emotion into a
a rambling.

Save your money and stick with the VHS.

I love the original movie. It is one of my most feel good movies of all time. I was really disappointed with the way they edited this dvd. The vocal part that is missing was a huge hole in what was a wonderful movie. Why do they have to mess things up that have a good thing going for them.

After reading the book,it became my favorite. So I was disappointed that the movie did not follow the book very much.About half the book was missing from the movie and the relationship between Hawkeye and Cora is all Hollywood. In the book,Cora and Uncas die.Not Alice,Uncas, and Heyward. And I was so heartbroken by the portrayal of Heyward as a cold, heartless military man who meets his demise at the stake. That is not how he was in the book at all!I do give the movie makers credit, however for the stellar score and realistic storytelling. It was not a bad movie,it was just disappointing if you're expecting the same story as the book.

Bert Glennon, who shot Stagecoach and seven other John Ford classics, has given this Raoul Walsh biopic of George Armstrong Custer a burnished glow--an evocative interplay of raw sunlight and elegiac shadow like no other vintage Warner Bros. Western. Glennon's artistry and Walsh's trademark gusto sustain enthusiasm even as the screenplay beggars belief. The flamboyant Custer (Errol Flynn), rushed into Civil War service straight from West Point, did get promoted overnight to general and establish a spectacular record for "ride to the guns" leadership. However, Custer as defender of Indians' rights--to the point of willing his own Last Stand so he could accuse corrupt Indian Commissioners from the grave--is historical rewrite of such sweeping chutzpah as to shame DeMille. Flynn and Olivia de Havilland make an even more appealing couple than usual, and the big supporting cast is unflaggingly energetic above and beyond the call of duty. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Onions & Tea Leaves?.......2007-06-14

I love our country and the excellent military establishments that has come along way to being more disciplined than back in Custers' days of skull-dabbery and malicious exploits!

"You can take glory with you"! Sounds like a very accurate portrayal of another false one that will cause confusion and trickery like this, Son of the Morning character seen in Gen. George A. Custer.

Good intentions are the surest road to hell and a lot of people were blinded by his deception.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the Historical Flaws: Solid Drama.......2007-04-20

When filmmakers decide to take actual events to place them on the screen, they face the difficult decision of to what extant they will tinker with the truth to score some dramatic points. In the case of THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, the producers totally abandoned any semblance of truth to present a vision of the life and death of General George Armstrong Custer that was then fully resonant with the burgeoning militarism of 1941 Hollywood. I know that it is difficult for current moviegoers to possibly envision an artistic elite that supports and glorifies traditional American values, but back in pre-Pearl Harbor days, political correctness meant flag waving, not flag burning. What Hollywood wanted was a flashy dashing hero who could be both charming and heroic at the same time. In Errol Flynn, America could see a distorted version of the egotistical and megalomaniacal glory hunter that Custer truly was, but Flynn's interpretation played down that part of him and emphasized an altruistic side that is so breathtaking in its centrality to Custer's film persona, that movie audiences could see in Flynn-Custer a hearkening back to the frontier hero that America was to need to buttress itself for the looming war. Director Raoul Walsh essentially films a vastly entertaining war cartoon that allows Flynn to pair with Olivia DeHavilland to maintain a love interest that forms the background for the many action scenes. And what action scenes there are. Flynn is seen attacking Confederate positions in cavalry charges with more than a little tongue in cheek. But in the second half, the mood and tempo change when Flynn takes his militancy out west to fight Indians. The smiling Flynn of the Civil War becomes the serious Flynn of the Far West. As Custer, Flynn is prepared to sacrifice his entire 7th Cavalry to save the greater body of troops of his commander, General Terry. The climactic massacre at the Battle of the Little Big Horn shows a more megalomaniacal side to Custer than what Director Walsh probably intended. In the hours preceeding the battle, Flynn's facial expression and voice well indicate a man who is stoically resigned to die merely for a higher cause. When the film's villain, played by Arthur Kennedy, asks him why he is doing this, Custer replies: "For glory or to hell. It depends on your perspective." My perspective was that Custer chose both at the same time. It is this odd pairing of wildly divergent viewpoints that make this gross distortion of history an entertaining film--even if I had to wonder whether Custer cared a hoot about the 198 troopers under his command.

5 out of 5 stars A romantic pastiche that stands the test of time.......2007-02-25

If one is looking for an accurate history of Custers life this is not the movie for you. However it it a wonderful film that totally stands the test of time. When ever I see it it makes me laugh one minute, and move me to tears the next. It is very powerful. Raoul Walsh as director is excellent.
It is a movie full of action, comedy, drama, pathos and romance, only in the way the golden age of Hollywood could have portrade it.
Especially is the unforgettable last scene of De Havilland and Flynn. It was the last time they would ever work together. These two people though never personally involved truly adored each other. The electricity of their performance is proof to that, and one of the most heart rendering scenes ever made on film.
Buy it, Just seeing Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland together is worth the price of the DVD

5 out of 5 stars The Legend of Custer and the 7th Cavalry lives on.......2007-02-21

I Know many people remark about the historical inaccuracies of this film, but if it is a history lesson you seek-go to school. This is a movie and an excellent one at that. True, many of the characters represent real people, but as I said it is a movie. It has good writing and a well acted plot. Most of all, it has Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHaviland in their last appearnce together. As was typical of Flynn's movies, you can expect humor, romance, and a whole lot of action. Look for Anthony Quinn as Geronimo. Enjoy this for what it is, an Errol Flynn movie, not a history lesson

4 out of 5 stars A Gourmet Popcorn Movie.......2006-10-15

"They Died With Their Boots On" is a classic gourmet "popcorn movie" that film students should study, so as to understand that movies made solely for entertainment purposes (even if the historical facts are fudged quite a bit) don't need to be dumbed down for the masses to enjoy; that they can be brilliantly made; and if they are approached in an artistically creative way, will be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come (Spielberg KNOWS this!).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome compilation, great opportunity.......2006-09-18

The street fighter is a martial arts classic, as well of the two sequels included here. In one disc, you can choose all three movies plus some extras, the quality is very acceptable for these widescreen english dubbed versions, no greater defects on picture and sound quality and of course the greatest opportunity to kill three birds in one shot.
The street fighter greatest achievement is showing the damage inflicted by terry's fists, the cruelty of his fighting techniques upon the opponents bodies. The story is not the best you had seen, mediocre i say, but terry made legend in martial arts world. You wanna know why? just watch him in action.
Highly recomended for fans and curious first timers.

1 out of 5 stars This movie is an insult.......2007-06-07

This movie is horrible. Don't buy it. I am lucky to have looked at a friend's copy. It insults the memory of the great Shaka Zulu. It must have been painful for Celes to act in this silly movie
which makes no historical sense.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2007-03-22

I really enjoyed the Shaka Zulu miniseries which featured this same cast. For that reason I was expecting more of the same. I got the same cast but I did not get the same enjoyment. This one was not worth much.

The story is of the furthering encroachment by the English and the Boers into the Zulu kingdom. Shaka is not a king to be trifled with and is in many way "primitive" but that does not keep him from sophisticated thinking as well. He is portrayed as a great leader of his people who can be violent but who is also willing and indeed eager to learn new things. So much they got right.

A great part of this story tells of Shaka being betrayed and captured by slavers. He vows vengeance but tempers that vengeance because of the example of an Englishwoman who shows him kindness. This part of the story is very simplistic and is dramatically flat. So too is most of the rest of the story. The one good acting job in this sequel is that of the title role. He tries to portray the complexity of the character. The rest are one dimensional.

2 out of 5 stars Means well but ends horribly.......2007-03-22

This movie is pretty hard to watch for anyone who likes a good drama or historical movies. Every scene was over the top and tried its best to make you care. Miss Farewell and Cpt. Prentice falling in love is nausiating. Yet, this tacky scene is trumped by the pitiful image of Grace Jones dead, sitting up with eyes open!!!!, because her man, Shaka Zulu, was away too long! The only highlights of the movie are the scenes where Shaka kicks butt and saves the day. The downside to that is the action scenes are so off the wall there's no point in saying it is based on a true story. Ex1-Shaka runs across Africa, on foot!, to kill a rivile king. Ex2-Shaka breaks the slave shackels from his wrists and takes over a slave ship single handed!
It's one of those you have to see once to tell people it's nothing like the real miniseries movies.
For the record, one of the worst sequels ever made. Should not be allowed to have the name "Shaka Zulu" on the cover!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-01

This is not the movie I was expecting. I thought it would be the film I saw on TV several years ago.

1 out of 5 stars It might have been good before Hollywood got a hold of it........2006-12-14

It must have been completly exhausting for Henry Cele to carry this movie for an hour and a half. You rarely see such true stage presence. It's too bad it was wasted in this movie. It gave a few shining monments of social criticism on the English colonial system and slave trade, but spent the rest of the time mooning over the weak romantic subplot.

Brawny blond longhair Richard Hill is the rogue barbarian hero Deathstalker in this hilariously slapdash sword-and-sorcery adventure. Armed with a sword that makes him invincible (provided by an otherwise completely useless sidekick), he heads off for a tournament of warriors sponsored by an evil wizard with a nasty plot to kill all his rivals... but don't worry about the plot because it makes no sense. This shot-in-Argentina, Roger Corman production features badly staged swordfights, loads of gratuitous nudity, female mud wrestling, trolls in bad rubber masks, and a funky eyeball-eating demon sock puppet. Former Hugh Hefner girlfriend Barbi Benton seems rather embarrassed in her role as a whiny harem girl. John Terlesky took over the title role in the sequel (Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans) while topless warrior woman costar Lana Clarkson graduated to her own series, Barbarian Queen. --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars I've seen worse.......2007-03-29

Those of you slamming this one haven't seen enough bad movies. Take my word for it I have seen an abundence of bad movies. This one doesn't stink. "Red Sonja" stinks. I guess partly because with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it I thought it might have a decent story, acting, and music like "Conan the Barbarian". Was I ever wrong. This one doesn't take itself so serious I don't think. That or it was campy enough it seemed to catch my interest. Fans of silly sword and sandal movies probably won't hate it.

4 out of 5 stars Deathstalker.......2006-06-07

Ladies before you comdemn me for my rating read my review first. I give it 5 stars because of how handsome Richard Hill was! That guy had an amazing bod!!!! What woman wouldn't want him! Also the 4 stars is for the warrior, the sorcery and the plot of going to a mysterious medevial planet. However I give 1 star for the RAUNCHY NUDITY,AND SEX SCENES! So 5 stars minus 1 star equals 4 stars. All you guys out there who insulted Richard Hill over how cheesy and lousy he was as an actor, you're probably, most likely ugly, homely-looking, unattractive, beer-belly dudes who make all women cringe in digust! You insult him because you're just jealous of his good-looks!

1 out of 5 stars Non-existent, uncomprehensible mess of fantasy schlock-making........2006-03-04

DEATHSTALKER is perfect for B-fantasy movie fans; this barely 80-minute travesty of filmmaking features everything hecklers can ask for--non-existent plotting, terrible acting (save for at least a raspy-sounding old lady), laughable scripting and schlock editing, and bargain-basement style background settings. There are no characters that come across as likeable or interesting (in particular, the lead doesn't have ANYTHING appealing about him), and the actors assembled barely do anything to rise above the F-grade material. If that's not enough, then how about the lack of a compelling plot (which this movie has nothing of the sort) to make DEATHSTALKER qualify as a major turkey? I was also offended that the women in this movie barely serve any purpose other than to 1) be topless and/or scantily clad; 2) get raped; 3) have sex with the hero; 4) all of the above. In addition, the background music is hideous; a bizarre mess of electronic noise, cheesy choral bursts, and blaring orchestral cacophony. Ear numbing and eye numbing all in one packed with nary a thing to keep one interested, DEATHSTALKER is probably best suited for folks looking for something to laugh at (and believe me, there's plenty of that in here). Otherwise, I do not recommend this 100th-grade CONAN wanna-be to anyone in the least.

1 out of 5 stars The Epidemy of Bad Films.......2005-06-03

Ever wonder what really makes a film bad? Look no further as you will find every element of bad film in this atrocious production. This film has absolutely no comprehensible plot. At the same time, Richard Hill and pretty much every other actor who participated in this film is a prime example of bad acting. A bad Kung-Fu film from China would be Oscar material compared to this worthless crap: it would even have a better script and dialogues. I could go on and on but let me just say that I recall seeing this film 22 years ago when I was 12 and I found it comically repugnant even then. One star is too kind of a rating for this piece of junk.

5 out of 5 stars Topsy turvey and fascinating.......2007-07-08

I couldn't believe it when I first saw this film. Uncas, the American Indian, not Hawkeye, is the protagonist?! The white love interest is attracted to him?! And this was made in 1920?!! (However, it seems that depiction of inter-racial couples were more likely in silent films which predated the 1930 introduction of the Hayes Code with its anti-miscegenation rules.)

Research has revealed to me that the novel by James Fennimore Cooper has nothing in the way of romance between the characters. So the moviemakers have their pick. Maybe it French-born director Maurice Tourneur who made this shocking choice.

Of course, the Indian is played by very white-looking Albert Roscoe. But, it's the thought that counts. Especially when that thought is expressed by pretty, goth-looking (with her shadowed eyes and wild hair) Barbara Bedford. She was about 17-years-old at the time, but she gives a beautifully understated performance, altho her intense eyes convey plenty.

It took me a while to recognize the actor playing Magua, the bad Indian. It was Wallace Beery, looking more like an African warrior. He's a terrific bad guy, tho.

One of early cinema's innovators, Tourneur (and fill-in director Clarence Brown) make frequent use of vignetting (frames), silhouettes, long shots, and daring lighting (such as the flickering lighting of a fireplace). So, this is a visual treat. Even the tinting in this film is effective.

It's a 1 hr 12 minute movie, so expect most of the novel to be glossed over. But the action scenes are engaging. Well...the Indian massacre of the surrendering British soldiers and civilians leaving Ft William Henry (a historical fact) went on a little long (in dramatic terms for this short movie).

It's a silent film, so many people won't be interested. While it's not dramatically nor technically perfect, if you're American Indian, like me, and/or you like new movie experiences, you might find this a fascinating curiosity.

4 out of 5 stars Embracing History Through Film.......2007-02-17

James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 classic novel, LAST OF THE MOHICANS is a pure example of historical romanticism. Directors Maurice Tourneur and Clarence Brown brings the classic American novel alive with this 1920 silent film adaptation. With great vividness and photographic craftsmanship, viewers have the opportunity to see Hollywood's take on the French and Indian War.

Within the same lines as D.W. Griffith's BIRTH OF A NATION and other early American film classics that depict America's historical past, LAST OF THE MOHICANS reflects and laments on a time that has long gone by. For those who have studied or read American history, Hollywood films tend to posses inaccuracies and misinterpretations of historical events in order to recapture or glorify a period for the present day moviegoer. In spite of the filmmakers staying loyal to Cooper's narrative, sadly, they depict and magnify the savage aspects about Native Americans and only show a small inkling of the alliances made between colonists and indians within their dying civilization. In addition, one sees the subtle romance between White woman, Cora Munro (Barbara Bedford) and Mohican Indian, Uncas (Alan Roscoe) that is dramatically shown throughout the film.

The most impressive part about the film is its cinematography and restoration and preservation done by the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House. The distinct color tints, depth of field of the landscape, and the period costumes are exceptional minus the pale over-powdered faces of the actors. Tourneur and Brown shot the picturesque mountainous scenes in California's backcountry - Big Bear Lake, San Bernadino County National Forest and the legendary Yosemite National Park - absolutely breathtaking scenes that are captured during the conclusion of the film where antagonist, Magua (Wallace Beery), stands atop a cliff viewing the vast untouched landscape.

If there existed a list of top films with a historical slant, LAST OF THE MOHICANS would be on the list. The film is a pure example of imaginative film-making as well as how history is depicted through the Hollywood perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Achievement........2006-08-09

Having recently revisited this title as part of the available films of Maurice Tourneur on commercial DVD (the others are ALIAS JIMMY VALENTINE, THE BLUE BIRD, A GIRL'S FOLLY, LORNA DOONE, VICTORY, and THE WISHING RING), I am again reminded of what a remarkable director he was and what a remarkable achievement this film is. Of all the existing versions this one is by far and away the most faithful to the James Fennimore Cooper original (the Daniel Day-Lewis version strays the farthest). The film was beautifully photographed on mostly natural locations (Yosemite Valley) and features fine understated performances from all the principal players especially Barbara Bedford as Cora (Boris Karloff is briefly seen as an Indian who throws a baby up in the air). The film is co-credited to Tourneur and Clarence Brown (Garbo's favorite director and maker of THE YEARLING). Tourneur was injured during the filming and Brown shot most of it. In a magnanimous gesture Tourneur wanted Brown to receive full credit but Brown refused saying that he only followed what Tourneur had already laid out and that he learned his craft from him. The print used here is from the George Eastman House and it is beautiful with subtle tints and proper framing. The title cards are new as is the electronic music score. While the score is perfectly suitable it really needs a chamber ensemble or small orchestra to fully bring it to life but this is a small quibble. The DVD is officially out-of-print but is worth tracking down as one of the very best silent examples of transferring a classic book to the screen. That comes as no surprise for if you check Tourneur's available titles, all but one are taken from literary sources.

4 out of 5 stars -= <+>=- New Film Score -= <+>=- .......2005-04-10

This review is not speaking to the historical and writer's inaccuracies about the Mohican People, but is speaking to the added music score. A new edition of this film is available now with an entirely new film music score. The film itself has been remastered from a french nitrate master, by George Eastman House. The Slingshot and Miramax releases added a rather poor film score, with flute and synthesizer. A new version exists now, however, with an entirely new film score by a Mohican Composer, "The 1920 Classic Myth: The Last of the Mohicans" (2003) in 5.1 surround sound, re-scored for full orchestra, and American Indian instruments. Search for it, and definitely check out this film!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to believe this was made so long agol.......2003-08-11

I have to honestly say that I did not even know there was a silent version of this film. I actually ordered it because I like the story and thought it would be interesting to see a silent version. Viewing this version was- breathtaking to say the least. The video transfer of this film is remarkably good which helps but more importantly the story itself and the acting I found incredibly interesting. Unlike the Dnaiel Day-Lewis version, which is excellent in its own right- this version has Hawkeye as a Minor Character. It focuses on the affection between Uncus (one of the 2 last of the Mohicans) and the General's Dauhter Cora (played by Madeline Stowe in the modern version). It must have been somewhat unsettling back in 1920 to even hint at a relationship between a Native American man and a Caucasian woman. This movie only hints at this relationship but I found it to be very believable and a refreshing point of view tastefully done. Another major plus of this movie was the actress who played Cora. If you view this movie it will be difficult to not think about this woman. I've seldom seen an actress or an actor emote so much simply by facial expression. Wallace Beery portrays Magua, the "bad" guy, menacingly well and, early in the film, you can see a very young Boris Karloff as an Indian raider. If you enjoy the story of Last of the Mohicans and if you have had the pleasure of seeing any silent film masterpiece you will thoroughly enjoy this DVD.

Description

A sly, unpredictable thriller about two men seeking refuge at a strange inn, The Last Great Wilderness is a weird hybrid of Rosemarys Baby and The Wicker Man. After their car runs out of gas, two men, in the middle of nowhere, seek refuge at an isolated country house. Although greeted warmly, the inhabitants of the house are an odd assortment of folks who appear to be hiding a dark secret. Are they harmless eccentrics, or possibly menacing cult members? The Last Great Wilderness is a bizarre and enjoyable mix of mystery, horror and the occult.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Archie we are use to seeing!!!.......2006-02-27

Being a hugh fan of "The Monarch of the Glen" and of Alastair Mackenzie I searched for his other acting credits and found this movie.....At first I didn't know what to think and almost gave up on it, but then something about it made me not be able to stop watching...And I am glad I didn't!!!! I must say I am more than ever a fan of Alastair...

5 out of 5 stars A perfect film?.......2006-02-22

In my opinion, yes, this is a perfect film. It's a very rare thing for me to write a movie review, but this movie hit me like...like...love at first site! I watch a lot of horror, thriller, indie, and sometimes fantasy. I'm not really into big-budget Hollywood action, drama, or comedy, and in fact I usually loathe them. To me, THIS is what a movie should be - brilliant screenplay, acting, cinematography, soundtrack, and even opening credit sequence - and all without a gajillion dollar budget, MTV-looking quasi-actors, or ADD-inspired endless action. This film is engaging due to setting, mood, character development, and a complete lack of predictability.

It has a David Lynchian quality, but is in no way derivative because all the bizarre little events and quirks can be explained somewhat logically, whereas in Lynch's films they'd have no explanation or seemingly no purpose other than to shock the viewer. It reminds me of The Reflecting Skin, but even that movie lies a bit closer to the Lynch camp. There are also elements of Trainspotting and even What's Eating Gilbert Grape (or maybe that's just me?). It's a tough film to classify. Very tough. I think that's one of the reasons I like it so much. You don't know where the movie is taking you until after it's over. To call it horror is quite a stretch, but there is an overall dark, creepy atmosphere and constant unease about where the film is going to take you. "Psychological thriller" seems appropriate enough, but it is so much more than that.

Highly recommended for anyone with intelligence and an attention span.

4 out of 5 stars Bought because of Alastair, but overall this was very good........2006-01-16

For those of us who are used to American type movies: fast action, go, go, go... you may not have patience for this film.

I am referring specifically to being on the road in the beginning. But for me the car ride scene made me feel like I was in the car with them.

I was pleased to see Alastair Mackenzie play a different character from Archie MacDonald. The 1st season of Monarch of the Glen brought my attention to him, but honestly, Archie MacDonald sort of reminded me of a character from a Disney film.

Just to see the actor smoke and swear seemed a bit shocking.

Regarding the intimate scene with Alastair: I didn't need to see him naked. Yikes! It made me uncomfortable. I guess that scene was to show how the two were vulnerable and exposed(?)

(I did feel uncomfortable seeing the actor Jonny Phillips private parts too. But I was thinking more along the lines of 'That's unrealistic': The woman just dismounted him and he's clean & soft. LOL)

When Charlie and Vincent were stranded and found the house, I thought it was going to be another one of those horrific films: a dark, creepy place with not much hope for the inhabitants. I was relieved to find it was something unexpected.

I believe that Vincent simply felt empathy with the ghost perhaps because he himself had one foot in the grave.

By the way, Jonny Phillips (Vincent) played a spiritual character in an episode of Monarch of the Glen.

There are a couple of violent moments, but mercifully, they don't last long.

In the end, Charlie is on the road again. All is forgiven, but not forgotten.

I'm glad that I bought this. It's worth viewing many times.

Note: My spelling of names was taken from the back of the DVD.

3 out of 5 stars THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM..........2005-06-16

This is a quirky, unusual film that is best categorized as gothic, as it is an interesting melange of mystery and horror, with a smattering of the occult thrown in for good measure. It is quite atmospheric, as it appears to have been filmed amongst the misty crags and moraines that constitute much of the Scottish highlands.

The story itself is not too complicated. Two unlikely young men, strangers to each other, hook up and take to the road together. One of them is a former gigolo, who is fleeing the wrath of the husband of one of his clients. The other is a formerly married man who lost his wife to her rock star lover and is now hell-bent on seeking revenge.

While enroute to their respective destinations, they run out of gas and are forced to seek assistance in the desolate countryside in which they find themselves stranded. They come upon a house whose inhabitants seem to be a beat off. The house appears to be a retreat of some sort for some pretty dysfunctional odd ducks. Coupled with the fact that their leader seems to engage in some unusual practices and the ghost of a young woman appears to be walking around at all hours of the day or night, it is a highly atmospheric and slightly creepy place in which to be.

The two men are initially determined to leave as soon as possible, but before they know it, the gigolo seems to have become spellbound by the ghost and his companion has become involved with one of the residents of the house. When they try to leave, fate seems to have interjected itself in a way that prevents them from leaving as planned. The film then careens to a startling conclusion that is quite shocking to the senses.

While the performances range from adequate to brilliant, the problem is that the film ends up being neither fish nor fowl, as it seems that it cannot make up its mind what direction it wishes to take. Consequently, the film ends up losing some of its initial coherence. Still, the film holds promise and is certainly worth a rental.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie .......2005-05-22

I thought his movie was well done - across the board: great story, setting, acting, filming. The story and characters draws you in and the ending is very dramatic. It has some querky odd scenes that raise some eyebrows and got a laugh from me. Each of the characters (to include the ghost) have issues and in time the script unravels them masterfully. The soundtrack is pretty good fare as well. I do question as to why the viewers are subjected to seeing the 'full monty' in a few sex scenes. I think that these scenes didn't do anything to enhance the movie - but I s'pose that's the Puritan in me. The film's mood has a Macbeth-like darkness that catches bits of bright light now and then and so the setting of a desolate rural area in Scotland is the perfect choice. In closing, I liked The Last Great Wilderness enough that I took the time to come on here and write a review and I'd watch it again - and that means it gets five stars from me.

M.A. Wetherell wrote, directed and starred in this 1927 silent film. This is a rare DVD copy of this vintage movie. Wetherell (who later created extreme publicity over Loch Ness Monster photos in the 1930s) plays Robinson Crusoe, the hero of Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel about a shipwrecked English sailor who, by virtue of his own ingenuity, survives for years on a small tropical island.
