In its second season, Irwin Allen's science-fiction-adventure series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea shifted its tone from a mostly serious program based around stories of Cold War intrigue to an out-and-out fantasy show, complete with monsters, ghosts, and time travel. By the launch of its third season (1966-67), that format was firmly in place (solidified, no doubt, by the success of Allen's similarly themed Lost in Space and The Time Tunnel, which were also running at the same time), and the crew of the Seaview battled all manner of bizarre creatures over the course of the 13 episodes compiled in this three-disc set, including werewolves, radioactive plant creatures, dinosaurs, scores of aliens, and even a spook or two. Critics and first-season Voyage fans have decried these episodes for decades, but there's no denying that their child-like charms remain intact, even as the special effects age most ungracefully; highlights, such as they were, for the first half of season 3 include "Werewolf" (Richard Basehart's Admiral Nelson contracts a virus that turns him into a wolfman; this storyline was picked up in the second half of season 3 in "Brand of the Beast"), "Deadly Waters" (Kowalski's brother is trapped in a sub, but the crewman cannot save him), "The Lost Bomb" (the Seaview must deactivate a bomb on the ocean floor before an enemy sub reaches it), and the truly ludicrous "The Plant Man" (evil scientist wants to create an army of leafy green soldiers) and "The Terrible Toys" (aliens use toys to destroy the Seaview). Season 3, Volume 1 is rich with campy fun, and should carry considerable appeal to viewers who remember Voyage fondly from afternoon reruns. The set includes several extras, including interviews with star David Hedison (including an audio-only chat from 1966), galleries of publicity and episode shots (and a glimpse at the Voyage comic book), fan letters, and more. --Paul Gaita

Description

Join the crew of the Seaview aboard their super high-tech submarine, where no mission is too dangerous and no threat is too deadly, be it enemy agents, mad scientists, deadly sea creatures, or impending nuclear disaster.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: Shark Ahead!.......2007-05-10

Great review from Seven "7" above.
I'll only add that if the whole of season three didn't make the show jump the shark, then the episode "The Shadowman" certainly did. But I kept on watching right to the very end of the series. Bought and paid for. Hooked for life. If anybody cares, my favorite episode of all time was "The Death Clock" from season four. The wildest, crazyist episode of the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST BUT THE BEST.......2007-04-29

Something funny happened to VTTBOTS during the fall of 1966. Season 3 happened! This season was far inferior as compared to seasons 1 and 2 in terms of storylines, production and overall direction, in other words due to budget cuts it fell off drastically. However, as ironic as it may sound this was the season that had to happen. Season 3 in so many ways turned out to be the defining moment for the series. Without a doubt this is perhaps one of the biggest transformations in terms of changing the entire format of a show that had so convincingly started out dealing with serious up to the date issues in the not so distant future such as cold war politics, and underwater science gone awry with the occasional spin on science fiction thrown in for entertainment value. That said, season 3 is always the main topic of conversation among VTTBOTS fans due to its elevated and unrelenting action from its VTTBOTS IN COLOR intro to the action packed art work detailed during the closing credits. The writers on staff during this year walked to the edge, seemingly jumped and delivered such episodes as THE WAX MEN, THE SHADOWMAN, and DOOMSDAY ISLAND, not to mention the werewolf and mummy episodes. The series had turned the corner, grabbed the torch and ran WILD! Seasons 1 and 2 were quality shows with great everything but this season is remembered for it's over the top monsters, it's colorful special effects and most notably the non stop action that prevailed during every episode. Richard Basehart and David Hedison did their best acting this season because they continued to play it straight and convincing even though it had to be killing them. Know matter how far fetched some of the episodes were (THE TERRIBLE TOYS, DEADLY CLOUD, etc.) they played it straight and to the point unlike the buffoonery of BATMAN and LOST IN SPACE. In reality, VOYAGE had become a live-action cartoon that figured all that mattered was to produce on the edge of your seat entertainment each and every week. Irwin Allen took the seaview and her crew where no one had gone before and boy did he deliver. Season 4, although produced on a higher production scale and somewhat better, continued the same trend. Sadly to say it is a shame that VOYAGE wasn't renewed for a 5th season. It would have been fun to see what they would have given us. However, be that as it may, this show, from episode 1 to episode 110 delivered some of the best action-adventure ever produced, that's why so many years after it's last original episode in 1968 we still can talk so fondly about a CLASSIC series!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars More fun than barrel of octopi.......2007-04-21

Okay, I'll admit it, by any objective measure, this is the weakest season of a fantastic series, but it's also the season I enjoy the most. Why? It's completely over the top... on a low budget. Nothing makes much sense, but who cares. Loads of color and fun and some of he episodes are genuinely great. "The Death Watch" and "Day of Evil" are as good as the series ever produced. So sit back and enjoy the cheese.

4 out of 5 stars Monster Rally.......2007-04-09

By 1966, the start of the third season, Irwin Allen was also working on the second season of Lost in Space and the fisrt season of Time Tunnel. This man only has so many ideas in his head to spread around. All these shows suffered in the later seasons but you ain't seen nothin' yet. Wait until season four. David Hedison said at a recent convention that if Rihcard Basehart and he had known what course the show would take, they never would have signed on. But once you sign on that dotted line, you're in for the duration

5 out of 5 stars Now the Fun Really Begins!.......2007-03-28

After two seasons of mostly serious and plausible adventure, the show takes a hard right turn into monsters and fantasy. Guest stars become less frequent, sometimes only the four main characters appear. One episodes only has three characters. TOTAL! And the monsters! The aliens! The walking toys and killer clowns! The show went wild and anything really goes in this season.

The actors treat it all seriously and even Richard Basehart seems a little bored at time. But a bored Basehart is a lot more entertaining than an alert George Clooney any day.

Is it art? No chance, but it sure is fun!

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC--ANOTHER VOLUME!.......2007-06-15

Just when you thought it was over, Fox has released a 4th and final installment in the Warner Oland Charlie Chan series. Thank you Fox. This set contains several very important Chan films. The Black Camel is the second Oland outing (Carries On is lost and only a Spanish version exists with Spanish actors), so this is a very important film in the Chan genre. It also contains what has been considered by many fans another "lost" film, SECRET and ends with the final Oland entry MONTE CARLO that has a hilarious scene with #1 son Keye Luke's rear end on fire.

There is still a missing Oland film and Like CARRIES ON may be lost forever. MGM has released the first 6 (and the least interesting) of the Sidney Toler WWII Chan films--which are overly cautious. The pre-war Fox Toler outings are still waiting for release. Let's hope they will be forthcoming, so many of them are highly entertaining and much better made than the Monogram counterparts released on CHANTHOLOGY.

Thanks again FOX. Let's see some more!

5 out of 5 stars "THANK YOU....SO MUCH.".......2007-05-13

Four more films:
Behind that Curtain (1929) - No Oland, very little Chan but Warner Baxter who would later play Doctor Ordway in the Crime Doctor film series, and Boris Karloff in the role of a servant.

The Black Camel (1931) - Features Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye

Charlie Chan's Secret (1936) - A great old-dark house whodunnit

Charlie Chan on Broadway (1937)- Charlie and #1 son on the great white way

Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo (1937) - The last of the Oland Chan films

The Warner Oland cycle is now complete. The special interest groups that scared the Fox Movie Channel into not showing re-mastered editions of the Charlie Chan films back in 2003 have ultimately failed. With the release of Vol 3, ALL the Warner Oland Chan films (not counting the lost ones) are available on DVD for all who want to see them. (Hopefully, the rest of the Toler Chans will follow) Long live the great detective. And to the P.C. forces that don't like it I can only say is "ha-ha!"

Amazon.com essential video

The Alien Quadrilogy is a nine-disc boxed set devoted to the four Alien films. Although previously available on DVD as the Alien Legacy, here they have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and picture. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years, this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "special edition" form.

Alien (1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 director's cut is fiddling for the sake of fiddling. Watch it once, then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely, the special edition of James Cameron's Aliens (1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice to finally have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative Alien 3 (1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered, and finished off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. Alien: Resurrection (1997) always was a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the special edition just makes it eight minutes longer.

The Alien Quadrilogy offers the first and fourth films with DTS soundtracks, the others having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary track that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first Alien DVD release are missing here.

Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented in full-screen with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills, and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the Lord of the Rings extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including an hourlong documentary and even all the extras from the old Alien laserdisc. "Exhaustive" hardly beings to describe the Alien Quadrilogy, a set that establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. --Gary S. Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars Chest Bursting Goodness .......2007-06-27

Quality...If you are a fan of the Alien movies look no further... This is a really cool collection of these movies and I am glad waited to buy this collection... Lots of cool extras and tons of new scenes to watch if you select the directors cuts of each film.

Nice!

5 out of 5 stars It's all here!.......2007-06-27

For die-hard fans of Alien, like me, this set is a godsend. The bonus minutes on each disk really add to the story. I was never a huge fan of Alien Resurrection but even the bonus features for this installment of the Alien legacy were awesome.
The minutes added to the first movie, Alien, shows what actually happened to Dallas and Brett. The additional footage on Aliens shows Newt and her parents prior to the Alien invasion. Alien 3 bonus footage adds more to the plot and suspense. As for Alien Resurrection, like I said, wasn't one of the better Alien movies but any set wouldn't be complete without it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Any Alien Fan.......2007-05-23

I have been a fan of the Alien movies since I was a kid. I never got to see any in theaters except for Alien Resurection. This is a great set and each movie has extended or deleted scenes added to the films. The first two, Alien and Aliens are great classic movies and the extended scenes make the classics that much better. The final two, Alien 3 and Alien Resurection are the mos underated in my opinion. Alien 3 was a great movie but has alot more cursing than the other three but it fits considering it is set in a prison. There was a bunch deleted from this film and it really adds alot to it as several key scenes are completly different and make more sense IMO. The only issue is that the added scenes have degraded over time and some of the dialouge was unusable so at times the audio is hard to hear, but it is still very interesting to watch. Alien Resurection was the most underated of the four and while it's not the best it is still a good movie. The added scenes really make it that much better. The special features on all of these movies are imense and this is one set that is a must buy for Alien fans and science fiction lovers.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: compression problems.......2007-05-19

Warning for potential buyers... the cd of Alien 4 is full of compression errors and won't even play on my dvd player. I managed to start the movie by scene jumping, but halfway through on a scene jump the movie stalled, dumping me into a "dvd video compression" screen, and I could not access anything beyond this point.

I don't know if I have a defective cd or if there are scores of compression problems with this product.

Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2007-05-15

This is a fabulous boxed set, especially if you can get it at a decent price. It is available on-line and in some shops at very comptetitive prices.
Alien and Aliens are already classics (as everybody knows) and merit repeated viewings.
The 3rd and 4th are not up to the same standard but have their moments.
There are 9 DVD's in total.
Disc 1 contains both versions of Alien + Commentaries
Disc 2 contains documentaries on Alien
Disc 3 contains both versions of Aliens + Commentaries
Disc 4 contains documentaries on Aliens
I have watched these and they are very good. Especially in relation to creating the special effects and James Cameron working in the UK at Pinewood (there were problems - indeed almost a strike!).
Disc 5 contains both versions of Alien3 + Commentaries
Disc 6 contains documentaries on Alien3
I have watched some of this and there is some fascinating information on the original script and director.
Disc 7 contains both versions of Alien Resurrection + Commentary
Disc 8 contains documentaries on Alien Resurrection
Disc 9 More Extras

All in all a superb set to get.

By its third season, The X-Files had grown from a cult hit to a global phenomenon, becoming the most popular show in many countries outside the U.S. Armed with the knowledge that the show was here to stay, series creator Chris Carter expanded its mythology, and the 24 episodes in this boxed set represent arguably the strongest of all the X-Files seasons. As usual, stand-alone episodes explored the paranormal and sometimes terrifying possibilities in mythology, pop culture, and religion. Darin Morgan helps the show to mature by expanding its use of humor, directing classic episodes such as "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" (featuring a fabulous performance from Peter Boyle) and "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'" Meanwhile, two-part episodes continue to delve into the X-Files' own mythology, introducing the alien black oil, the implant in Scully's neck, the mysterious Agent X, and the shape-shifting Jeremiah Smith. But following the complex mythology is not crucial to enjoying the show. The strength of the X-Files lies not in resolution but in feeding the paranoia of its rabid audience by revealing conspiracies that linger in the mind as unanswered questions. Series creator Carter realized wisely that fans did not look to the X-Files to explain the unexplained, but to question that which they thought they understood. The third season was effective because it hinted that while the truth was out there, it was more complex, sinister, and amazing than even Mulder had imagined. --Eugene Wei

Description

This season, series creator Chris Carter expanded the mythology with plots like the alien black oil and Scully's implant, but also further developed the show's trademark humor and continued to explore paranormal possibilities.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite seasons.......2007-03-27

I like all of the X files, but especially the first few seasons, before it was picked up by mainstream Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars The Mythology Continues to Evolve Amidst Humor.......2007-03-05

A decent continuation of the series, as the mythology continues to form. While there is plenty of stock fare involving "little greenish-gray men with oversized heads and eyes", the real stand-outs in this series are those involving quirky humor, both black and side-splitting. Some of these are:

Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose - A psychic serial killer stalks other psychics and fortune tellers, with reluctant psychic Clyde Bruckman, played to bizarre perfection by Peter Boyle, enlisted by Mulder to assist. Bruckman predicts Mulders means of death many years hence, involving a length of rope, some hand cream and an erotic video. One of the best of all nine seasons.
D.P.O. - Giovanni Ribisi and his "best bud" Jack Black are Beavis and Butt-Head types who while away their miserable lives by throwing lightning bolts at folks they don't like.
2Shy - A mysterious scholar feeds vampire like on women he meets through internet chat sites, siphoning off their body fat in order to survive. A (blackly) humorous study of online dating.
Revelations - Mulder and Scully reverse roles, as Scully funds herself drawn into a contest between a young stigmatic and the human personification of the Devil.
War of the Coprophages - Everyone hates cockroaches, and the producers of the show engage in a humorous free for all that will have your skin crawling. And what was that that just crawled across the TV screen? Genuinely funny episode.
Syzygy - Marcie and Terrie have a birthday on the worst of all possible days, from a cosmic perspective. A nod to the classic film, "Carrie". A very funny episode, and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Technical Notes On The Slim Sets.......2007-02-26

I wanted to point out something technical about the slim set discs that I bought. If you're looking for insight into the episodes or characters - please look elsewhere.

When I put the first disc of Season One into my DVD player, it started the "loading" process and gave me a disc error after about one minute. Instead of cursing Fox (well, I did it later anyway) I turned the player off, leaving the disc inside. After a couple of minutes, I turned my DVD player on and Viola! I heard the X-Files theme and saw the menus (after the obligatory FBI copyright infringement warnings).

For those wondering, the DVD player in question above is a Philips Progressive Scan. The same problem occurred on a newer Panasonic player. No glitches materialized when I tried the discs on the Sony or AKAI players. In all cases, I was eventually able to get to the episodes. With the first two the screen sometimes showed up scrambled and the menus inaccessible. On other occasions I was able to access a root menu similar to one you would see if you "explore" the DVD contents on a PC (Video_TS files, etc.), though the players would not load any content from these menus. Speaking of PC viewing, I experienced no problems with any of the discs on my PC and all four programs my PC has to play DVDs functioned perfectly.

PLEASE DON'T READ INTO THIS TOO MUCH. I don't work for Fox - I'm not trying to encourage sales of the more expensive sets. This was just a personal experience I had, and it seemed to occur less frequently with Seasons 4 - 9. My uneducated opinion: the equipment I have isn't top of the line, and maybe wasn't equipped to handle the way the content was compressed. I was impressed that 4, sometimes 5 episodes were squeezed on one disc. That's three - almost four hours of content. I know - dual layer DVDs and blah, blah, blah. But c'mon - even Lord of the Rings - Return of the King was issued on 2 discs! (By the way, the content looked and sounded great.)

Another side note: Seasons 1 - 4 that I got were full frame, and 5 - 9 are widescreen. At first I thought I had missed the option when purchasing these discs, but these are the only way I've found them at retail stores and online. Nothing major; I just thought I was losing my mind at first. (Which is still a possibility.) I can't remember if they aired this way on television - I just noticed that the cinematography got revved up a bit starting with Season 5. If this observation is incorrect, someone please feel free to correct me.

Okay. If you have read this entire review give yourself a pat on the back, a cookie, I dunno - watch some old Doctor Who episodes or something. A better price, better packaging, and better for you. (They were giving out a carton of Morley's with the bigger sets, right?) By the way - the 5 stars is based on my overall X-Files enjoyment. Sure, there are episodes I can skip through. But for me, it's good bang for the buck. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars X-Files - 3rd Season.......2007-02-13

I love the X-files. Big fan and these DVD's were great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and televison.......2007-01-03

These DVDs have been digital remastered for top-notch visual quality - you will not be disappointed. The third season of the X-Files is my personal favorite. By now, the story telling, music, and special effects have matured. Despite the temporary departure of Glen Morgan and James Wong, Chris Carter's writing team delivered an excellent set of 24 episodes.

5 out of 5 stars A Regular Frankie Fan Review.......2007-05-16

Whether or not you are considered "a regular Frankie Fan" or you are a Rocky Horror Virgin, this movie is an experience that no other movie can provide. The interesting thing about it is, when the movie was created, it was never the plan for it to become the "event" that it has been for the last 30 or so years.

The movie is a spoof of B-Movie Sci-Fi and movie musicals, with a signature dance to boot! The plot does begin with Brad and Janet attending a wedding, only to become engaged after the ceremony. While leaving the ceremony, the car breaks down with a flat tire. Brad locates a nearby castle, the castle of Dr Frank-N-Furter, while Frankie is hosting a convention for the Transylvanians. It is here that Frankie brings Rocky, his creation, to life. And of course, complications occur.

The really fun part of watching Rocky Horror is in the choice of the viewing. The viewer can choose to hear the audience participation (and participate along with the audience if they choose) the viewer can choose the option that gives prompts using props such as rice, toilet paper, water guns, newspapers, and the like.

With many theaters not showing Rocky Horror at midnight anymore, mostly due to the carnage (trash) that ends up after everyone throwing so many props, the option of watching it at home is a benefit. It's fun to talk back at the dialog, sing along with the songs, and laugh at whole thing because after all, it is a comedy.

Don't Dream It.... Be It!

4 out of 5 stars two weddings and a funeral.......2007-01-18

There's something unsettling about church weddings. Perhaps it's the organ music, officiates dressed in black, the crying, or even the ejaculatory rice throwing. The whole thing is bizarrely paradoxical in its combination of the sexual and asexual, birth and death, black and white, austerity and prurience.

Kind of like life.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show features two weddings - each demonstrates the intrinsic absurdity of the Puritan's sexual rite of passage. The first one opens the film. It's a scene we've witnessed before: happy couple drives off before a crowd of joyous onlookers. This time, however, the figurative is made literal as their car is decorated with the words "Wait til tonite. She got hers now. He'll get his." Quid pro quo. "An hour ago, she was plain old Betty Monroe. Now she's Mrs. Ralph Hapschat." Marriage as transaction and ownership (or even consensual rape) could not be clearer.

The plot of Rocky Horror, or what there is of one, centers on All-American squares Brad (Barry Bostwick) and fiancée Janet (Susan Sarandon) after they make a wrong turn into a time warp and find themselves the playthings of the maniacal transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) and his merry band of weirdoes. It's not really important. The second wedding occurs halfway through the film, a rush job between Frank-N-Furter and his creation, the titular Rocky Horror, a perfect physical specimen birthed to be the mad scientist's sex slave. There is an element of incest to it and we pity poor Rocky, who really has little say in the matter (singing "Oh, can't you see, that I'm at the start of a pretty big downer"). Once again, subtext becomes text. When we infantilize sex (and further, our wives, and even further, women in general), we marry our children. Like Mrs. Ralph Hapschat, Rocky Horror (shared initials, natch) has been given life, but at the service of another.

While drawing upon the other 1970s androgynous space alien of glam Ziggy Stardust, Rocky Horror also invites immediate comparison to Grease (it's worth noting that Barry Bostwick originated the role of Danny Zuko on Broadway - the yin to Brad Major's yang), with all its 1950s kitsch, themes of sexual liberation (Sandy sings "You're the One That I Want," Janet sings "Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me" - potato, po-ta-to), and of course, the music. When Danny Zuko succeeds in making his own spandex-clad and cigarette-smoking Frankenstein monster out of Olivia Newton John, would it have been that out of place to see Frank-N-Furter belt out from the Funhouse "Don't Dream It, Be It?"

Perhaps, but not because the sentiment is misplaced. Janet's transformation into a fully-realized sexual being is the more honest, and further, more empowering of the two. Her central motivation is to please herself, not some guy in a leather jacket (indeed, she cuckolds her own Danny) whose attempts to woo her at a drive-in movie theatre border worryingly on date rape. Grease wants to have its Eisenhower Era nostalgia both ways - at turns revering the decade and rejecting it. Rocky Horror simply rejects.

Near the end of the picture, a wheel-chair bound Strangelove-esque character (read: impotence) shows up to save Brad and Janet. But from what? Where were you when you were really needed: the Rydell High graduation carnival, 1959?

Interesting footnote: Rocky Horror Picture Show creator Richard O'Brien (who plays Riff Raff) wrote a sequel, Rocky Horror Shows His Heels, in which a pregnant Janet gives birth to a child of questionable paternity. When O'Brien and director Jim Sharman ran into problems convincing the original cast to sign on, the plot and characters were changed (though Brad and Janet remain), and the film was eventually produced as 1981's Shock Treatment.

1 out of 5 stars What Shocks?.......2007-01-09

I found this movie to be such a waste of time, that I threw out the disk the moment it was over.

Shock Treatment is supposed to be the sequel The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It takes place entirely within a recording studio in Denton. While Brad and Janet are played by new actors, most of the other principle characters are played by the cast of Rocky Horror.

It was nice to see old friends again, but they were put to no good use. The songs were horrible, the story incomprehensible. The movie was not shocking, or funny, or sexy, or interesting - or well done.

Save yourself the trouble.

5 out of 5 stars Thrill me, Chill me, Fulfill me........2007-01-05

What can I say about TRHPS that hasn't already been said? I went to the live shows; I threw cherries and hotdogs, and squirted water guns and got really hammered. I yelled "hey kool-aid" and "follow the bouncing thumb" I dressed up like a Transylvanian, I had to explain to my parents that my obsession with Frankenfurter was healthy, and liking men in fishnets was just a phase ( I was wrong by the way, I love me some drag queens still). I have the original Broadway soundtrack, the foreign soundtracks (toca toca toca toca me) I have the coffee table books, original posters, commemorative everything and still I am looking for more. This "cult classic" never was a passing fancy, this movie with or without being live is one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I have it to thank for my love of Tim Curry. If Marijuana is the gateway drug, this movie was the gateway to my obsession with everything deviant and glamorous. I am not one of those elitist that say you cant "know" RHPS without going to a live showing, because not every town still has those (mine stopped because we trashed the darn theater too many times) I believe that by watching it with an open mind, and with a sense of humor that you can, in your minds eye, understand what the millions of fans adore. It wouldn't hurt to get a copy of the soundtrack with all of the responses, and simultaneously watch the DVD, its not cheating.

5 out of 5 stars Second Chance to get the Anniversary Edition!.......2006-09-07

This is a great set for people who want BOTH movies, and don't have the Anniversary Edition of ROCKY HORROR. The two movies are great, but for completely differing reasons. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a cult classic with an established fan base, and SHOCK TREATMENT stands on its own as a curious sequel which heads off in a new direction both musically and thematically.

The set here is a special 3 disc edition with two discs devoted to ROCKY HORROR and a single disc for SHOCK TREATMENT. The ROCKY HORROR portion includes the movie, audience participation tracks and video, commentary by Patricia Quinn and O'Brien, segments from a "Where Are They Now?" special on VH-1, and tons of featurettes featuring cast, crew, and fans. It is a rerelease of the 2000-2001 anniversary edition, so if you own that... no need to buy this again (just track down SHOCK TREATMENT on its own).

SHOCK TREATMENT includes a remastered print of the movie (for the first time in widescreen on DVD), a commentary track from the fan club president and his friend (they tell trivia and do some of their "act" for screenings), two features with interviews from cast and crew members about the making of the film and the score, and trailers (which are bizarre and worth a look). Richard O'Brien does not make an appearance in ANY of the extras, so we have to rely on people involved with the production such as director Jim Sharman and Patricia Quinn to fill us in.
