...........WW2 Submarine Warfare in the Atlantic [1943]...............2007-06-11
.....Here's WW2 Hollywood at its best....try to remember it's 1943; not nowaday...Tyrone Power-Dana Andrews-Anne Baxter-Jimmy Gleason-Minor Watson and Dame May Whitty, comprise a solid cast to put this film over...this Navy flick hit the mark as you left the theatre thinking we ARE going to WIN this war afterall...1943 was a pivotal war year for the USA...this movie is discussed pretty well by other critics in here, so be it...I could find no fault with the beautiful/primary technicolor [never better print] or the predictable screen/play...if any scene captured my fancy...it was the perfect train/Mayflower hotel scene[s] with the slick/glib Tyrone Power on the make for the enticingly, beautiful Anne Baxter who had a penchant for sexiness with her clothes on...now that is an accomplished actress...catch her in another movie ten years later, "Carnival Story" and you tell me if she is sultry/captivating or what??...you won't be disappointed in this DVD...it's America at its wartime BEST!!.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF
Lesser Known, Still Exciting.......2007-06-01
Perhaps because it is not so well known, I found this WW2 sub film intriguing from the git-go and recommend it highly to all submarine enthusiasts. Like most such films, it is weak on technical information but that's pretty much the way it goes, and still I recommend it highly.
Crash Dive.......2007-01-15
Received in the time promised. Have not viewed this DVD yet but I am sure it will meet my expectations.
stick to the bombs & avoid the kissy scenes.......2006-08-03
a ww2 potboiler with the classic love triangle where the 2 best friends both love the same gal, highlighted by some excellent battle sequences wherein the crew of a single submarine manages to sneak into a secret nazi base and blow up an entire fleet. the progenitor of movies like "guns of navarone", its a fun watch when they keep it to the war.
A recruitment drive with a love interest.......2006-01-31
Lt. Ward Stewart (Tyrone Power) is in love with PT boasts he can drop depth charges on sneaky German U-boats that use lifeboats as ship bait. His Uncle Adm. Bob Stewart (Minor Watson) needs an exec on a U.S. Sub and talks him into doing his duty.
Meanwhile the sub commander Dewey Connors (Dana Andrews) is waiting for one more stripe so he can be worthy of popping the question of marriage to his girl, Jean Hewlett (Anne Baxter, `Nefretiri' in "The Ten Commandments" (1956).)
You guessed it while Dewey is away Bob discovers Jean and beats him to the question. Jean says sure; she just forgot to tell ether of the men about the other.
One of the interesting things about this movie is that instead of good guy - bad guy, both officers are good guys and it takes both personalities to accomplish the missions.
They do go out of their way to make the Germans sneaky and do extraordinary feats with their sub and commandos.

Best Cold War Film.......2007-05-07
This film is the best Cold War film I have ever watched!
Richard Widmark,Sidney Poitier and Martin Balsam are absolutely superb in this film! I am amazed that this film, which was made in 1965, is as poignant now as it was then. Only Richard Burton's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
can be truly compared in quality to this Cold War thriller!
I don't ever recall seeing this film on broadcast television or cable. Was it ever aired after it's theatrical release? I definitely know this film is not for weak nerves. There is not a boring segment throughout!
I have been collecting DVD's of Sidney Poitier recently and I just purchased this one. I can't help but say this is his best film,in my opinion. This man is a fantastic screen presence!
It was also fun watching James MacArthur in this film as a young Navy ensign. (He later went on to become Dan-O on Hawaii Five-0).Hawaii Five-0 - The Complete First Season
Please, if you truly want to watch an excellent film drama purchase this DVD!
Good movie, bad price.......2007-03-15
Don't get me wrong by my rating. This is an excellent film. However $24.95 is way too high a price to pay for this, especially considering there are no extras at all. What were they thinking? It should have been $9.95 retail, which I'm sure it eventually will be. So for now, be happy with your video copy. Or if you have a dvd recorder, just wait for it to show up on Turner Classics.
Shocking cold-war classic.......2006-11-02
This is intense edge-of-your seat drama. A frightening portrayal of the obcessive cold-war captain mistaking equates fear of his authority with readiness in war. The end is inevitable and chilling. Mr. Portier's character comes off a bit on the preachy and self-righteous side but still gripping and likeable. Richard Widmark is, perhaps, at his best in this film and gives a stunning performance as the obcessive and bullying captain. A great addition to any intense thriller drama library.
excellent suspense.......2006-06-15
I first watched this film many years ago....It was one of the most suspenseful movies I had ever seen at that time. Widmark and Poitier are both excellent in their respective roles...In fact, the whole cast is excellent.
I especially enjoyed James McArthur of Hawaii Five-O fame and Wally Cox.
This is a film that will keep you on the edge for its length.
A real Cold War Chiller!.......2006-04-06
Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier are reunited from their movie "No Way Out" and in a bit of a stretch their roles reversed. Widmark plays a staunch and disciplined, bordering on fanatic, captain of the naval destroyer U.S.S Bedford involved in a cat and mouse chase of a Soviet submarine. Poitier plays an over enthusiastic reporter bend on getting the true story of the most deadly game being played out.
This is a great Cold War movie boasting an impeccable cast of supporting actors and a perfect companion to "Fail-Safe". As with Fail Safe and The Longest Day, appropriately filmed in B&W.

Description
MURPHY'S WAR tells the story of the sole survivor of a World War II German U-boat attack that leaves him enraged and consumed with revenge.
Customer Reviews:
Long Dragged out and boring.......2007-05-07
This was a very poor story and it dragged out so long and was not very realistic. You have no idea where the story takes place and it was so unbelievable. Peter O'Toole is not much of an actor here, just goes about screaming like an idiot. I do not recommend this unless you are a O'Toole die hard.
Typically Brit.......2007-02-23
Good story, good acting. Typically British, it forces you to think. The evil Germans murder survivors, but the Brit hero murders a crew of German submariners after the war is officially over. If you like your good guys and bad guys in black and white hats, the special effects full of mindless and gratuitous violence, gunplay and sex, the movie's not for you.
One of My Favorites.......2007-01-22
Murphy's War is another one that you won't find in the rental store. It's a war movie whose goal isn't bigger and better explosions and general gore (It has a little of both, but, Wow!, it's relevant to the story!) Peter O'Toole is great.
futility of war,(ww2) good transfer,peak o`toole.......2006-06-15
Its not a bad picture really and o`toole and his plane are the show. The color is good and overall transfer is very good, considering its age and the rock bottom price. But it is very slight in content with the theme of revenge and the futility of war its touchstone. As someone said , the ending is a bummer and sort of ruins what fun there was before; but it was made during vietnam and i guess they had a message to put out.The flying sequences are top notch, however, and the transfer showcases them well.Worth the price. A strong 3 stars.
The Madness of War.......2006-04-27
Director Peter Yates followed up his classic policier "Bullitt" and the minor romantic dramedy "John and Mary" with this small but engrossing commentary on the absurdity of war. (His next film would be the delightful comedy "The Hot Rock." Yates was nothing if not versatile.) Peter O'Toole plays Murphy, the last survivor of a Merchant vessel sunken by a German sub, and he's obsessed with revenge. That the war ends mere days after his rescue does nothing to deter him; he will even the score or die trying. Though no classic, the film's moral complexities and simple central conflict, combined with O'Toole's convincing portrayal of a man lost in the tunnel of his own mad vision, make it a rewarding experience. It's a downbeat ending, but a good one.

Description
The true story behind the cataclysmic World War II naval battle that took place just off American shores.
1941. America had just entered World War II, but terrifying unseen weapons were stalking US targets, sinking over 400 ships just miles from American shores in the worst naval defeat in United States history. The stealthy predators were German U-boats, Hitler's deadly warships of the deep. It was cataclysmicwith bodies and wreckage washed ashore on the eastern seaboard. But the Allies ultimately triumphed, sinking over 700 enemy submarines.
Fifty years later, the personal drama behind this wartime state of siege resurfaced when a team of divers discovered an unidentified German U-boat deep in the waters off the New Jersey coast. What boat was it? And what secret mission brought it there? The divers embarked on a dangerous, six-year quest to uncover the secret of the mysterious wreck. Three divers lost their lives in the search, but the clues uncovered have shed remarkable new light on the struggles and triumphs from this undersea war.
There's more in this spectacular two-hour video journey. Trace the history of submarines and undersea warfare from the American Revolution through World War II, and tour the sophisticatedand crampedinterior of a captured U-boat. Dive in dangerous waters with deep sea detectives as they attempt to retrieve clues that will reveal the decaying U-boat's identity. See how the breaking of secret Nazi codes by the Allies altered the outcome of the warand helped unravel the mystery behind this German U-boat. And finally, travel to Germany with the divers as they rewrite a part of World War II history, bring closure to families of the lost crew and discover how one man's life was spared.
Customer Reviews:
The Science Behind the U-boat. .......2007-04-09
There's a whole lot of valuable insight and background here concerning the history of the submarine in this special along with an interesting emphasis on The Third Reich and Admiral Karl Doenitz. It's got all the invaluable and intriguing minutia that most of us have come to love about Nova documentaries in general. Before seeing this episode I had no idea that the first underwater ship was created in the 1700s and the way in which underseas boats captured the imagination of people in the 19th century. The show, in fact, is more of a modern tale than anything else. It explores the mystery of a lost sub off the coast of New Jersey and the travails of a group of divers on a quest to determine its exact identity. It reminded me of an aquatic version of a CSI plot.
hitlers lost sub.......2007-03-21
a great underwater adventure docudrama, in the seahunt tradition featureing timeless ww2 historical interest concerning uboats and the battle for the northatlantic, along with outstanding scuba diving action, and last but not least very real and touching human epics of spirit and courage.
Hitler's Lost Sub.......2007-03-19
I had read "Shadow Divers" which I feel was essential in preparation.
I felt this DVD gave much additional information and was an excellent "add-on". The parts that must have been recreated chronologically I thought were also well done. They justified my purchase having read the book. I did wonder whether a final explanatory
appendix might have been added following the release of information about "Enigma". The dangers of deep Scuba diving despite using gas mixes were well described, and I thought the DVD was excellent.

good but not great.......2006-08-03
Good dvd but the book "Shadow Divers" (of which this dvd was based)was much betterr.
Hitler's lost sub.......2006-02-25
I was in the process of reading the Shadow Divers and came accrosed the Nova DVD "Hitler's Lost Sub". This is an excellent account of the book version of the story. It was very informative to view, almost as being there, the persise story of the book I was reading, on film. How, Why and Where the Nazi War effort came so close to our homeland and what could have happened. The book is more detailed, but to actually see the side by side comparison of reading the story was very fasinating and enjoyable.

draggling, dull, despriting, devoid of a good story.......2007-04-14
Didn't believe there could be a worse film than U-571 until I saw this one.
Scenes are pretty good. Costuming very period. They used a real submarine and they used real germans.
Acting is very low quality. Plot is dragging and dull. Diolog just dies. Spoken devoid of spirit. Other than the German captain and his exxo, none of the characters is really interesting.
Really pathetic this one.
Loved this submarine story........2006-08-10
This movie moved me to the point of tears. It is an absolute gem. You will not be disappointed.
What is this, Brokeback Submarine?.......2006-04-16
This is an unbelievable movie. Let's get this straight, Macy makes a promise that he will not take the ENIGMA machine to the Nazi commander, and then keeps his word by scuttling the ship. This is a true version of Hollywood's idea of a hero. A man betrays his country for his friendship with the German, nevermind the thousands of American and British sailors possession of the ENIGMA would save, nevermind defeating the most brutal dictator and mass murderer in history (Stalin's and Mao's mass murders hadn't happened yet), Macy's loyalty is to his new German "ally" (lover?). His actions are not believable. In reality, if Macy did act in this manner, his crew would probably have killed him, or at least subdued him and turned him in for treason along with the ENIGMA device.
To the guy who rated this 5 stars and said most won't get this movie (typical Liberal elitist), we get it, we just don't like it.
Typical Hollywood anti-war drivel, adequate acting, weak plot, poor writing, unimaginative Leftist propaganda...Barbara Streisand's version of WWII.
Decent Submarine movie with a great cast which makes this movie worth the watch.......2006-04-16
In 2000's U571, the Americans attacked a German UBoat and eventually their boat got destroyed and so they had to us the German boat. In this one, the German's attack the American sub when it was doing pratice dives and eventually the German's take the remaining American survives aboard and hold them hostage. Things happen when some German soldiers get out of hand attacking the Americans and some of the German's actually try to blow up the ship after the German captain has the American's help them get back home. Not bad submarine movie has its moments and the cast has some excellent stars and young stars which gives this movie the power it needs. There are some cheesy moments (actress Lauren Holly (Dumb & Dumber, Down Periscope) for one thing) but it was a decent enough ride. I would say in a different style then U571, not like it (but it did feel like it sorta). The excellent cast includes the superb William H. Macy (The Cooler, Stealing Sinatra), Scott Caan (A Boy Named Hate, Into The Blue), Til Schweiger (Driven, Barefoot), a solid Thomas Kretschmann (Immortal, King Kong), Clark Gregg (We Were Soldiers), Ian Somerhalder (Tv's LOST, upcoming Pulse), Jeremy Sisto (Wrong Turn, Suicide Kings), AJ Buckley (Wishcraft, The Forsaken), Chris Ellis (Con Air, Crimson Tide), Sam Huntington (Rolling Kansas, Detroit Rock City) and Xander Berkeley (North Country, Fox's 24).
Missed the boat............2005-07-10
The other reviewers that is.
This is a fabulous film that superficially is about WW2 submarine warfare (and yes you can see there's a lot of low-rent sets...especially the interior shots of the American submarine). In Enemy Hands is the best male-ensemble war film since Platoon...& maybe better. It isn't William Gacy's best effort(he seems to throw off his lines like an aging hipster)
& perhaps it's because Til Schweiger absolutely steals the film with his nuanced deeply effective performance of the U-boat Captain.
What I think is truly subversive is the metaphor- in this case meningitis that affects the American crew and later contaminates the German crew which has rescued the them. You don't have to dig deep (or think too hard) to find that this is an anti-war film on the surface and a clever way of critiquing America's influence
and culture throughout the world. The film id's it as a disease- a fatal disease that infects all.
And it's somewhat of a trojan horse in that it masquerades as the familiar genre of naval warfare films.
Look closely- the German actors are wonderful to look at...they look healthy...the Americans? Wimpy, non-descript, outside of the head bangin'banty-rooster American sub commander.
This is a hidden gem of a film- perhaps too subtle for a mass-audience of film goers. If you've taken a good film history class or studied acting- I think you'll be blown away.

American Doughboys: Heroes of World War I.......2006-11-01
This 70-minute DVD is a mixed bag. The titled section of 34 minutes consists of material that will be familiar to anyone who has looked at one or two of the videos about the Great War. Most of the footage is clips of pre-U.S. entry material, such as trench warfare, howitzers firing, and ships sinking. Once unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann Telegram convince the U.S. to enter the war, the DVD shows American troops being recruited, trained and shipped to France and upon arrival, fighting. The commentary is routine and familiar. The interspersing of colored U.S. war posters is interesting though, unfortunately, of very brief duration and with no specific commentary about them.
The remaining 36 minutes of the DVD is really more interesting and consists of four so-called "Bonus Footage" sections. 1. The Iron Commander: a short biography of General John J. Pershing. Much of the footage here was new to me and included post-war material up to his death and funeral. 2. The Old Soldier: Duty, Honor, Country, a quick overview of General Douglas MacArthur's military career and final years. We're reminded of his achievements, as well as (though not intentionally) his affectations, for example, his smoking with a cigarette holder and his slow, ponderous speech as if he were always addressing the universe. 3. Treaty of Versailles: A New Europe, which provides a quick overview with maps of some of the changes the Great War and the Treaty brought and warnings by contemporaries of the likelihood of another great disaster in the not distant future--what of course turned out to be World War II. Finally 4: Home Front America 1917-1919, which offers some interesting footage of, for example, shipbuilding but is very brief and impressionistic.
In summary, a moderately interesting DVD more for the bonus material than for the title subject matter.

Description
Perhaps the most important victory won by the allies in the West was the triumph over the deadly German U-boat. Once a harbinger of death for merchant shipping and its escorts, by 1943 the British and American fleets had gained the upper hand and the U-boat had become the hunted rather than the hunter. This film features extensive footage from the Battle of the Atlantic, and of U-534 the last surviving U-Boat in Western Europe. She was sunk in the Baltic in 1945 and raised again to the surface intact in 1993. On board U-534 the treasures of World War II were preserved as if in aspic. Now for the first time in over 50 years we can experience again the claustrophobic world of the U-boats.

Description
The convoys that sailed time and again across the Atlantic and Arctic oceans to bring vital supplies back to Britain faced one of the greatest and most deadly threats of the entire war. Hidden deep beneath the waves were the German U-boats, which wreaked havoc among the Royal and Merchant navies. This desperate struggle - sometimes known as the 'real battle of Britain - was vital to the outcome of the war; if the U-boat menace had not been met and defeated, Britain could very easily been starved into submission. The war against the U-boats cost 100,000 lives. Nearly 200 Allied warships and 2500 Merchant ships were sunk during the fighting in this most terrible theatre of battle.

Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, informative, and at times moving........2003-09-23
U-Boat War is a great example of how to do a military history documentary the right way. Each of the three approximately 50-minute episodes smoothly blends archival footage, present-day footage of key locales and ships (including U-boat interiors), and intelligent, thought-prooking commentary by historians and participants in the war. Interview segments with famed U-boat captains like Kretschmer, Topp, and Werner (author of the gripping memoir Iron Coffins) are a particular highlight.
The episodes cover the major events, key players, and significant economic, political, tactical, and moral elements of the U-Boat war. The documentary understandably doesn't go into great technical detail--books will serve you better there--but it does discuss major devices and tactics in layman's terms: ASDIC, radar, HF/DF, depth charge and torpedo firing patterns, the Wolf Pack system, Enigma, schnorchels, and so forth.
Excellent.......2002-03-15
Extremely well done documentary. The DVD covers all aspects of the U-Boat war in excellent detail. The footage is relatively fersh and well reproduced. Both the axis and allied sides of the war are covered. If you are at all interested in the U-Boat battles of the Atlantic this is a must get.
COMPREHENSIVE, INFORMATIVE, AND WELL-PRESENTED.......2001-07-18
This is a set of 3 documentaries covering the U-boat's impact in WWII, from beginning to end. It is well-written, and supplemented with interviews with American, British, and German survivors (and also historians) as well as a good amount of archival footage. It is really interesting to hear the story from those who were there -- including a number of German U-boat commanders. The breadth of coverage is good, including both German and Allied tactics (and how these tactics changed during the war), as well as technical advances on both sides. Coverage also includes developments in the Allies' ability to read the German naval code. I think the most valuable thing it does is provide the human story without demonizing the German sailors.
DVD quality is generally good to satisfactory. In short, this is a very informative and comprehensive set of documentaries. Very highly recommended.
Best U-Boat documentary to surface in a long time.......2001-05-20
This is an extremely interesting and highly informative documentary in three parts. Each segment is roughly 50 minutes long and covers the broad history of U-Boats during WWII. There is much archival footage which I have never seen before, all of which is excellent. The film reveals a visual history of U-Boats that really brings history alive. Much of the footage is somewhat obscure (and rarely seen) and focuses on daily activities including the minute details of life on a U-Boat, something which other documentaries on the subject seldom present in depth. Commentary is quite good and includes interviews with leading aces as well as historians. It appears to be a British or Canadian production (additionally, there is a reference to the Discovery Channel in the closing credits). The material is highly organized and can probably be considered required viewing for many U-Boat history enthusiasts.
