A documentary film by Bruno Monsaingeon devoted to the 20th century's greatest violinists, The Art of Violin really cannot be faulted. The same, incidentally, can also be said of the similar volumes that cover the piano and singing, so there's never been a better time to collect a personal audio-visual archive of some wonderful historical performers. The added dimension provided by the painstakingly collected film material (here featuring no fewer than 20 outstanding soloists) is of exceptional value when observing violin technique, and the diversity of approaches presented here in loving detail is in itself a subject for endless comparison. The material mixes archive performance footage, much of which one might never have dreamed existed, with interviews and documentary commentary. However, rather than turn the project into a museum piece, Monsaingeon includes contributions from contemporary figures such as Itzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn. An absolute must. --Roger Thomas, Amazon.co.uk

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well, It Depends.......2005-11-05

Somehow this DVD also features a couple of other relatively unkonwn performers (a singer and a pianist) who come intermitently with Menuhin. They came as a surprise-- and not altogether a pleasant one: even though the singer is alright, the pianist isn't inspiring at all-- to a viewer like me who didn't pay sufficent attention to every small detail on the cover.

As to the comments by Menuhin, they are very brief and very general. We have comments like: "it's good" (full stop) for one piece, and it's on the "harmonic" side (full stop) for another. Or else he would simply say, "I would play it faster now" (full stop)... Yes, there is also a tiny bit of demonstration on fingering which lasted a minute or so and that is it. I'm not sure how enjoyable is the interview to the general viewers, but they may be of some interests to the violinists or music lovers.

The whole point is, if you enjoy seeing Menuhin playing especially when he was in his early 30s, you probably shouldn't miss out this one. One star taken away for the unwarranted surprise.

                3 out of 5 stars Rare chance.......2005-10-27

This is a rare chance to see younger Menuhin in quite a few selections. Could have bee handled better, though. Picture and sound occasionally out of sync, sound not cleaned up, picture restoration kind of non-existent...seems generally to have been not handled with the kind of tender loving care the rarity of the material demands and the product notes boast about. That being said, having seen it, I would have bought it anyway for the opportunity to see Menuhin. Not insurmountable difficulties for the somewhat adventurous viewer/listener.

5 out of 5 stars Menuhin Then and (Almost) Now.......2005-09-29

This DVD contains two sections. The first is a black-and-white feature, 'Concert Magic,' consisting of a 75-minute recital/concert with Menuhin and assisting artists. It was made in the Chaplin Studio in Hollywood in 1947 and is reputed to be the first full-length classical music concert film ever made. In it Menuhin, mostly accompanied by his long-time pianist Adolph Baller, plays various works, mostly short, mostly of encore size, many of them selected from programs Menuhin had played in hundreds of concerts for Allied soldiers during the Second World War. They include such things as the first movement of Beethoven's First Violin Sonata, the unaccompanied 'Prelude' from Bach's Third Partita, Wieniawski's 'Scherzo-Tarantelle,' Paganini's 'Moto Perpetuo,' Locatelli's Caprice subtitled 'Il labarinto armonico,' Bach's 'Air on the G String' (accompanied by Antal Dorati leading an orchestra of Hollywood studio musicians), Paganini's First Caprice (yes, THAT Caprice, and in the now out-of-fashion arrangement for violin and piano made by Fritz Kreisler) and a violin/piano arrangement of Schubert's 'Ave Maria.' He is also heard playing the violin obbligato in 'Erbarme dich' from the St. Matthew Passion (with contralto Eula Beal singing it in English as 'Lord, Have Mercy on Me'). Beal is heard in the Bach/Gounod 'Ave Maria,' and in a smashing performance of Schubert's 'Erlkönig' accompanied by pianist Marguerite Campbell. Polish-American pianist Jakob Gimpel is heard in selections by Liszt, Chopin and Mozart. Audio only (a selection played in movie theaters as patrons took their seats for the 'Concert Magic' movie): Novacek: 'Perpetuum Mobile' with Dorati leading a Hollywood orchestra.

There are a few errors in the title placards before each selection. For instance, Baller is listed as accompanying Menuhin in the unaccompanied Bach 'Prelude,' and Gimpel is listed as playing the 'Chopin Mazurka in C Sharp' when in actuality it is Chopin's Mazurka No. 5 in B Flat. Beal, a singer I'd never heard of, is wonderful. Gimpel, on the other hand, strikes me as a mechanicus who brings little to the music.

The concert is followed by a filmed interview (in color and in English) with Humphrey Burton made in 1997 in Warsaw. Delightfully, Burton shows Menuhin bits and pieces of his performances in the filmed recital and Menuhin makes comments about his playing (he is not falsely modest), about the filming itself, about the circumstances of the film's release. There is a good deal of technical talk about violin-playing technique that would certainly be of interest to violinists, I should think, but in language that the interested layperson could understand and enjoy.

It is a joy to see and hear the 32-year-old Menuhin in his prime in the black-and-white feature and even more so to hear him talk intelligently and charmingly precisely 50 years later as an eminence grise of the music world.

5 out of 5 stars Menuhin/ Brother and Sister Duo.......2005-10-10

This DVD is amazing. The music played by a brother and sister, the closness and the emotion you feel when you hear this is so wonderful.
The Franck Sonata is the best performance I've ever heard, and I've heard many performances of the Franck Sonata. I've never seen anyone before now play this work by memory. No one has to play these works by memory, but I guess they have played it so much, it was memorized. Hephzibah has such power, but yet soft on the keys. Never harsh. Her technique is outstanding. It is hard to believe that her parents wanted her to be a house wife and mother, and didn't want her to go into music. The woman is a genius like her brother.
Back in the 1970's I heard Hephzibah Menuhin live in a recital with flutist Elaine Shaffer. The highlight of my life. I was 13, sitting in the front row. I was a flute student, and now I'm a pro flutists. I also had the pleasure to meet these two strong women back stage. It wasn't long after that, Elaine Shaffer died of cancer. But back to this video. The cellist, Maurice Gendron is also a musicians musician. I never even have heard of him untill now, and that surprises me because I have a great passion for the cello.
I hope you will buy this amazing DVD. It's one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of Enescu?.......2004-04-13

Menuhin's playing reminds us of Enescu so much (and the influence of Carl Flesch is small)! With Kreisler, you're listening to a cozy friend and with Menuhin, you're communicating heart to heart with a close relative.

The Schubert trio is an absolute jem from whichever way you look at it. The pianist is so delightful never quite as oppressive as Richter. Maurice Gendron is a most marvelous cellist who is even more impressive than his compatriots, Tortelier and Fournier. Their collaboration is most perfect.

Menuhin's Franck is as expressive as ever and perhaps only Thibaud could compare with him in this regard. His sister played this sonata without the score in front of her! And his Bartok is in colour with excellent sound. And some say his Bartok is even better than Szegetti.

This DVD doesn't give you a full dimension of Menuhin's art though, nor is there any climax.
