In the second season of Showtime's Dead Like Me, teen grim reaper George (Ellen Muth) returns just as she left the first--dead. (Technically, undead.) That isn't about to change, but some things will. In season premiere "Send in the Clown," she'll get a promotion at the Happy Time temp agency (a dead ringer for Office Space's soul-sucking cubicle maze). Meanwhile, Roxy (Jasmine Guy), a tough-talking fellow reaper, will make the move from meter maid to police officer. After all, even reapers have to eat.
There are other changes. George's parents, Joy (Cynthia Stevenson) and Clancy (Greg Kean), finally throw in the towel on their foundering marriage. The other reapers experience their share of good and bad luck. Sweet, if narcissistic Daisy (Laura Harris) finds religion, larceny, and love (in that order), while bad boy Brit Mason (Callum Blue) gives up the bottle only to take it up again and no-nonsense reaper boss Rube (Mandy Patinkin) spends most of the season trying to track down someone from his mortal past.
There were 15 episodes in the second season. Guest stars include Michael Des Barres as a washed-up rocker ("In Escrow"), Barbara Barrie as George's free-spirited grandmother ("Rites of Passage," "The Escape Artist"), and Eric McCormack as a cocky TV producer who falls for Daisy (three episodes, starting with "Death Defying"). Unfortunately, 2004 wouldn't turn out to be creator Bryan Fuller's lucky year. Despite fan devotion, critical praise, and Emmy nominations, both of his distinctively quirky dark comedies, Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me, would not be renewed--but at least the latter made it to the end of the year. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Proving that "reapers are anything but grim company" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), this "deliciously dark comedy about the afterlife" (Newsday) returns for "a second season as strong as its first" (Philadelphia Daily News). Thanks to breakout star Ellen Muth's prickly charm, Dead Like Me has "an amusingly odd and touching energy all its own" (Detroit News and Free Press). After more than a year as a grim reaper, George (Muth) has realized that being a teenager in the afterlife is as complex as in real life. There are still unrequited crushes, agonizing dilemmas and the occasional bad attitude. Along with her kooky "co-reapers" Mason, Daisy, Roxy and Rube, George struggles to collect souls while managing her own awkward development
into an adult reaper!Disc One"Send in the Clown," "The Ledger," "Ghost Story," "The Shallow End"Disc Two"Hurry," "In Escrow," "Rites of Passage," "The Escape Artist"Disc Three"Be Still My Heart," "Death Defying," "Ashes to Ashes," "Forget Me Not" Disc Four"Last Call," "Always," "Haunted," Bonus Material

batcall.......2007-06-28
Someone left HBO, and was responsible for 6 ft. under, went to Showtime, then killed this much funnier. better competition. Dead Like Me should still be on. No regard for the fan base who pay for cable.
Dead Like Me - The Complete Second Season.......2007-06-26
I loved this show its only on cable TV in Australia and you cant even get season 2 in Australia. This is what started me buying through Amazon. Anyway the show is crazy and very funny and at the same time touching. Loved it Lots!!!
Oh how the mighty have fallen.......2007-06-25
It was quite a surprise to find out the reason Showtime hadn't resumed showing a new season of DLM. It is quite disheartening to see such an intelligent funny dark comedy cancelled and replaced by more of the usual "rubbish" that the networks grind out.
The second season of "Dead Like Me" wasn't as strong as the first, but it was pretty close, still very engaging and better than most other television shows on cable and the networks. The main problem with season 2 is that it sets up many interesting questions that were meant to be answered in future seasons, but we'll never get those answers because someone at Showtime decided to kill its best show. In this season we really saw the character of "George" grow up into adult, something she couldn't do while alive. The entire cast was excellent, and the interaction of the "reapers" among themselves and with their "victims" was hysterically funny. There were so many unanswered questions woven into the plots about the reapers that we will never know the answers to. The development of this mismatched group of characters was so interesting, plus the subplot of George's family gave such a deep dimension to the overall story. What will happen to Joy and Reggie? How did Rube die? What was his history? I'm sure the writers would have given us a wonderful ride, if only Showtime stuck with it. All of the extras are located on the fourth DVD. "Dead Like Me...Again" is an 11-minute featurette about the show. The cast talk about their characters and gush about working on the show. Sadly, the irony is that everyone talks as if another season is in the works when we know that the show has been cancelled.
"Putting Life Into Death" takes a look at how the special effects technicians bring the CGI Gravelings to life and how they pulled off five other effects, such as souls passing through live beings and how the death ripple, when a reaper touches someone before they die, is achieved.
Also included are nine deleted scenes totaling 11 minutes that are not put into context, so, at times, it's difficult to figure out which episode they come from.
Finally, there is a photo gallery featuring some stills from the show. At least we will have two seasons of DVD's to keep the "Dead" alive.
brilliant fun.......2007-05-31
We have watched series one over and over. Wondered if series 2 could be as good and maintain the high quality of series one. YES it can. There are some subtle differences in series 2 - slightly deeper subject matter but it retains its dark comedy and excellence. Cant believe the TV people cancelled this show!
Great show -- greatly missed.......2007-05-24
This show had so much depth and intelligence to it. I guess the dumbing down of America started with the executive branch and moved to all executives. Such a pity. Get the DVD's and watch them all in a row-- what a plesure!

Pay cable's "other"show about life and death, Dead Like Me takes a darkly comic look at mortality through the eyes of someone stuck between this life and the afterlife. "Bail bondsmen for the disembodied" is how Rube (Mandy Patinkin), the often exasperated Reaper foreman, explains it to disaffected 18-year-old George (Ellen Muth) after she's vaporized by a falling toilet seat from the Mir space station and drafted into the ranks of the Reapers. It's now her job to take the souls of the doomed, preferably before their mortal coil is damaged beyond recognition by the devilish machinations of the gremlin-like gravelings.
You wouldn't mistake George's fellow Reapers for the do-gooders of Touched by an Angel, but they are anything but grim. Charming British shyster Mason (Callum Blue) always has some scam brewing, high-living, fun-loving former flapper Betty (Rebecca Gayheart) treats death as a cabaret ("Reaping Havoc"), and one-time starlet and wannabe actress Daisy (Laura Harris) still nurses her dreams of stardom. Even hard-bitten meter maid Roxy (Jasmine Guy) manages to find a way to let loose.
Dead Like Me puts a light touch on black comedy, but it has a sneaky way of using humor to explore loss, loneliness, and regret, as well as kindness, and courage, and responsibility. George gets a hard lesson when she tries to wriggle out of her assignments like some overgrown kid, only to see the damage of her (in)action in "Reapercussions." And as George's angry, tightly-wound mother (Cynthia Stevenson) and withdrawn little sister Reggie cope with death, she breaks the rules to watch over them: their own pouty, glum guardian angel. There's nothing like your own death to put your life into perspective.
The four-disc set features all 14 episodes of the debut season of Showtime's witty black comedy. The feature-length pilot includes optional commentary by cast members Ellen Muth, Mandy Patinkin, Jasmine Guy, Cynthia Stevenson, and Callum Blue. Other supplements include the nominal documentary featurettes Dead Like Me: Behind-the-scenes and The Music of Dead Like Me (with theme song composer Stewart Copeland), 32 deleted scenes, and a still gallery. --Sean Axmaker
Description
You're about to be collected. "Winningly eccentric" (LA Daily News) and "insistently irreverent" (People), this groundbreaking, original series delivers you into a realm of shockingly funny characters and twisted narratives you'll find completely "addictive" (NY Daily News)! When an errant toilet seat from the falling Mir space station puts an abrupt end to her life, George (Ellen Muth) discovers that death is nothing like she thought it would be. Recruited to collect the souls of others as they die, she suddenly finds herself an unwilling participant in a line of work she never knew existed: Grim Reaping!
Customer Reviews:
Very funny, very sad, very thought provoking.......2007-07-06
While I could have some major issues with this series, for example, terrible language, off color, unfriendly to religion in general and my denomination in particular. I found myself really hooked after watching a single episode on the sci-fi channel, so I had to buy both seasons to watch after the family has gone to sleep. My wife doesn't share my enthusiasm, and I wouldn't want my kids still at home to watch, due to the afore mentioned concerns.
So what is the appeal to me then?
For one thing it is wonderfully acted, with razor sharp wit in the dialogue. But mostly it is a thoughtful, and unique look at the importance of not wasting your life... That is a good reminder for us all.
Don't fear the reaper.......2007-07-06
They live among us--maybe in the next cube at your dead-end job, maybe the metermaid who's just given you a parking ticket, maybe the busker on the street.
They're Grim Reapers--and don't envy the power. You see, like any other bureaucracy, Death issues unfunded mandates. Reapers may be dead, but they've got to work to pay the bills--as well as their 'day job' of collecting souls. So, what they get are part-time jobs that they can leave when the inevitable post-it note gets handed to them with name and time of death of their next victim.
The season focuses on Georgia Lass, an 18 year old Seattle based college dropout who becomes a Reaper after the flaming toilet from the Mir space station falls on her head. We see her struggling through her death, watching her family move on without her, and trying to adjust to her 5 person team of Reapers.
"Dead Like Me" is quirky, funny and surprisingly insightful. My husband and I just sat down and watched and laughed through the episodes. I think the seasons are worth owning and if the humor suits you, are worth watching again.
It's original. It satisfies my curiosity........2007-06-25
It's dfferent from all the movies and shows I've ever seen. The first DVD of the first season kept me glued to the screen from start to finish. After that, my curiosity waned. So I did not watched the remaining discs. It's depressing and annoying to see people die one after another. In addtion to that, the main female character was so grumpy. She's not happy with anything both when she's alive and after she's dead.
Starts out with promise and fails to deliver.......2007-06-03
I brought this movie based on the great reviews that it had received.
The initial couple of episodes were interesting but as the series progressed, it was repetition without substance.
Overall, the series had a cute concept but the writers /directors just didn't take it anywhere and by the end of the first-series, I promised myself that I would not invest in the second-season.
At the end of the series, I no longer cared what happened to "George". She's going to be doing much the same activites, with most of the same people that were in the first season and I really don't care if they move on or stay where they were.
brilliant.......2007-05-31
This is fantastic fun. EVERYONE that has watched this has adored it. OK, there's some foul language but it is in context and the story is just so good that it doesnt matter. This DVD is watched over and over and over again in our home.

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.
Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

awesome movie.......2007-07-02
awesome sequel to the first one! i love the special effects in this one with Davy Jones and the Kraken! also, jack sparrow was hilarious as always! :D
Another great movie to add to your collection.......2007-06-27
This movie had me sitting on the edge of my chair throughout it. Once again, all of the cast plays an outstanding role. The whole object of this movie is to get the keys from Davy Jones to get to Dead Mans Chest. Its an awesome movie. I recomend it to everyone.
Stands alone!.......2007-06-27
FUN! I always look at sequels from at least two angles: as a sequel and as a movie without a predesessor. This movie can easily stand alone.
With a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum - this show's a lotta fun!.......2007-06-26
I finally sat down and watched this DVD - I have no idea why I waited so long, I'm a Johnny Depp fan and love the way he lives and breaths his characters. He is especially believable as Jack Sparrow - lovable despite his tendency to think predominantly of his own well-being or how to line his pockets.
A good bit of time has passed since the previous movie and the East India Trade company has moved into the area; bringing with it the detestable Lord Beckett, who has Will arrested on his wedding day and drags him to the site - where Elizabeth forlornly sits in the rain, in her wedding dress - in chains. And proceeds to arrest Elizabeth as well. What does he want? He wants Jack Sparrow's compass and he's willing to make a deal to get it - he will send Will out to find Sparrow and get the compass in exchange for a pardon for Sparrow and leniency for Will and Elizabeth.
The movie has amazing special effects - like the first movie, the crew of the antagonistic ship is completely crewed by "monsters," requiring extensive special effects. Personally, I liked the special effects in this movie better - I was fascinated by the constant movement on many of the characters. The kraken was also pretty cool, especially toward the end where you get to see the main body and mouth of the "beastie," as Jack puts it.
This movie does end on a bit of a cliff-hanger, with a bit of a surprise thrown at us right at the end that I certainly didn't see coming. I will definitely be looking forward to watching "At World's End" once it is released to DVD. A recommend from me for anyone who enjoys a good adventure flick, some fun sword fights (love the water-mill scene - shades of a hamster wheel, anyone??) and terrific special effects. Not for the people who prefer to be intellectually challenged or go to "theatres" to see "films" - this is definitely a movie ;-) Get it, watch it, enjoy it!
Not As Good As The First But Still Fun To Watch........2007-06-25
Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest is not as good as the first but still worth watching. The story is full of holes and slightly hard to follow at times but the acting is still great. I just cannot get enough of Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as a flamboyant pirate. If you saw the first movie you need to see this one. If you havent seen the first yet, go back and view that one before this movie.

Way to go Disney!.......2007-07-02
The picture quality and sound quality of this movie are amazing on Blu-Ray! Way better than I had hoped, I show it to anyone who does not know what Blu-Ray is or ask me is there a difference on Blu-Ray!
The Uncompressed audio track is a Hundred times better than Dolby Digital, the movie comes alive!
Great movie!.......2007-07-01
I must say I like the second part better than the first one. The story and characters were amazing. Uncompressed sound is heaven so use a surround sound system! The graphics were pretty good and overall it's a great movie to watch and to collect on Blu ray.
Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-30
The video transfer on this BD is definitely one that would be classed as reference material. I have watched it a few times now with my PS3 set to 1080P feeding my JVC HD1 1080P projector and the picture quality is the bees knees.
Even with my ageing Denon AVR-2802 I can quite clearly hear the quality of the audio. I am expecting to take delivery of the new Onkyo 875 in the next few weeks which I am sure will give me a better idea of how good the audio transfer really is. Suffice to say that with my current equipment I believe the audio transfer is up there with the best available.

This movie is stunning, If you need a firmware update, do it, it's easy and free. Then rate the movie. The 2 pirate movies are outstanding. Disney did an excellent job and I can't wait for pirates 3!

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it.

British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way: When they're trying to use vinyl records to decapitate a pair of zombies, Shaun and Ed bicker about which bands deserve preservation--New Order they keep, but Sade becomes a lethal frisbee. Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. Also featuring the stealthy comic presence of Bill Nighy (Love Actually) and some familar faces from The Office. --Bret Fetzer

Even better the 3rd time........2007-06-29
I liked the movie a lot when I rented it. After seeing "Hot Fuzz" by the same team, I knew I had to see the movie again. It's just as good as I remember it and I caught new things watching it again. I invited a few friends over to watch it and they liked it too.
English Humor And Zombies! What a Combination!.......2007-06-28
I was never a huge fan of Zombie flicks. George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead scared me so bad when I was eight years old that I didn't sleep for the next decade. So when it comes to the lurching, head-snacking undead, I tend to steer the other way. Well, too many of my friends have commented on Shaun Of The Dead, so I had to take a look for myself. I'm a big fan of dry British humor and Shaun Of The Dead is packed with that as well as flesh-scarfing zombies. The entire scene where Shaun goes to the liquor store to by his morning drink and completely ignores all the signs (the bloody handprints on the glass of the cooler door, the dead bodies sprawled in the yards and streets) that the zombies have come to roost. Hysterical! Along with his slacker cohort Ed, Shaun decides to go over to his mum's house and rescue her, while taking care of his zombie-bitten step-father with a cricket bat. The laughs, entertwined with the gore, make for one trippy movie. Filled with absurd situations, Shaun Of The Dead will have you rolling while you flinch. Great!
Dig it!
A Somewhat Dissenting Opinion.......2007-06-05
Yes. Rent it or buy it. It's not a bad movie, rather entertaining in fact. You know the plot - standard (by now) end of the world flesh eating zombie flick with a double dollop of dry British humor and sufficient gore. Good script. However, I had a few problems with this movie. First off, it's amusing rather than roll on the floor hilarious as others have stated. Secondly, it is extremely derivative of Romero's films - so much so, that I found it both distracting and a little annoying. Simply, Romero did all the heavy lifting laying the groundwork in his initial trilogy, and this film apes rather than adds like 28 Days Later. This one borders on plagiarism. Goes to the well too often with the overly used "loved one is bitten by zombie and now we have to kill it..." cliche. And, while the production values are surprisingly good, the direction is at a banal TV movie level. You've heard this from critics before - "doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be..." Imagine if Monty Python and the Holy Grail flip-flopped between a silly spoof of the legend of King Arthur and a serious treatment of the mythology like John Boorman's Excalibur. Or, if "Crusher" lops off Curly's head with an ax as The Three Stooges are being chased around haunted mansion, and Moe pauses for a few minutes to tearily weep and grieve the loss of his brother before Crusher sneaks up behind Larry, Moe tells Larry to quit breathing on him, Larry gives his pateneted, "Nyaaaaahh" and they resume woop, woop, wooping in circles around the halls again, stepping over Curly's "corp-us" ; ) to escape Crusher as he weilds his ax.
Entertaining, worth a watch, but to call this derivative work a "homage" is being too kind, it's not as funny as its hype, and it simply flip-flops between horror and comedy to often, too severely, and too jarringly. The direction is also mundane. This one was saved mainly due to its energetic cast and a good script. Still, these criticisms aside, I couldn't say I wasn't entertained.
Shaun of the Dead.......2007-05-30
Consistantly funny, yet amazingly believable, take on a zombie invasion. Characters well drawn and full of subtle details that make rewatching fun.
Shaun of the Dead.......2007-05-28
I originally saw this movie because the previews looked undeniably hilarious. I waited of course until the movie was available to rent because I was cautious regarding the type of humor that might be in the film. I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie wildly entertaining with very little gratuitous humor. This British movies' premise is a spoof of the many American zombie movies (and the single British one), where the main character Sean finds himself battling zombies with presumably his best friend and roommate in order to save his as of recently ex-girlfriend. The mild manner of lead character Sean is ultimately what balances the hilarity of the movie, creating a sense of seriousness on the part of the characters, one which is ultimately the catalyst of humor. It is classic British humor and very enjoyable indeed.

In a word... disappointing.......2007-07-03
The Dead Zone is (or maybe was) one of my favorite TV series. The characters have always had unique styles - consider Johnny's detached yet humorous view of the world, Walt's admirable cowboy mannerisms, and Rev. Purdy's emotional and spiritual assignment to the world around him, to name but a few. The acting and stories in Season's 1 and 2 were outstanding. Do you still remember when Johnny awoke in the hospital and saw the doctor's family escaping from Vietnam? Or when he saw the nurse's daughter trapped in a house fire? Wow, that was some imagery.
In Seasons 3 and 4 the cleverness and magic started to be hit and miss. Some shows were still very good (e.g. Rachel, Coming Home), others were poorly written. Overall though, I was still hooked. I wanted to see not only where the main Stilson/Armageddon story was headed, but also the sideline adventures just to see the characters "play together."
Unfortunately, Season 5 continues the slide downward. Despite what another Amazon review stated, there are actually 11 episodes, only a couple of which are good (the Inside Man being my favorite). Some of the episodes are so poorly written that you can see the pain on the actors' faces as they are forced to play a part in something that left them professional ashamed (e.g. Panic, Into the Heart of Darkness). Another notable disappointment is how little we see of the characters in this season. Sarah is only in the season for about 5 minutes - did she quit?, Purdy gets a few more but not much. Instead the writers have chosen to bring in no-name characters that come and go, leaving little more than a brief taste as to what they were about.
The series concludes with a "big event" that is so poorly thought out that anyone with half a brain will turn off the TV in utter disbelief. Do the writers really need to dumb down the plot so much? I'm sorry to report that the days of cool characters interacting in an original story seem to be gone. Count me as a disappointed fan. I can only hope someone goes into USA Network and does some serious house cleaning before next season.
Me encanta Dead Zone.......2007-06-25
surprisingly not very good, unlike previous four seasons.......2007-06-21
I own the dvd sets for all five years of the Dead Zone, and I am a big fan. However, I was really disappointed with this set. First of all there are only 9 episodes (3 dvds x 3 episodes each) as compared to maybe 16 episodes in the other years. Second, is that the stories suddenly quote weak and far fetched. It seemed like the show got better and better from years 1-4. But then suddenly its not believable. Also, there must have been some contract dispute with Sarah Bannerman because she almost never appears in any of the episodes.
The Fifth Season of "The Dead Zone" works better without Greg Stillson.......2007-06-10
When I rewatched the fifth season of "The Dead Zone" from start to finish on DVD (bonus points for this set coming out right before the start of the sixth season) I also happened to be working my way through "The X-Files," watching one episode a night right before bed (I am up to Season 7 at this point). While watching "The X-Files" I had discovered that I really did not care as much about the so-called "mythology" episodes as I did the various weird cases that Mulder and Scully had to deal with that never involved aliens, black oil, or whatever. As I watched "The Dead Zone: The Complete Fifth Season" I found myself having a similar reaction to Greg Stillson every time he showed up in an episode.
Everybody who read Stephen King's novel "The Dead Zone" (loved it) or saw the theatrical movie (thought it was miscast) knows that the final confrontation with Greg Stillson is what costs Johnny Smith his life. Johnny knows from one of his magic touches that Stillson's fledgling political career will end up with him as President, at which point he will cause a nuclear war. The conflict in the novel was all about Johnny finding out that he could change the future for the better and then trying to come to terms with whether or not he had the moral authority to do so. Well, in the television series Johnny came to that decision a long time ago and while it was obvious that the television series had to be about a whole lot more than Stillson, I now have the feeling that this is all going to end just like the book/movie with both of them dead. Okay, maybe Johnny will get out this alive, but I am becoming more and more convinced that the situation will not be resolved until the final episode.
This season begins with Stillson engaged to Miranda Ellis ("Forbidden Fruit"), which resolves the previous season's cliffhanger in unspectacular fashion, and he pops up again as part of a government committee investigating Johnny's actions at a Waco-like disaster involving a religious cult ("Vortex"), and then in the final episode as events take him closer to the White House ("The Hunting Party"). But five seasons down the road, it is hard to care anymore. There is a major development in this whole plotline in that it is not just a combination of Stillson's charisma and a reactionary political climate that will make him president but also the machinations of the Janus Group. I can do without the whole conspiracy bit, but they now become another element for Johnny to deal with from now on.
It is also another reason that I like the episodes that have nothing to do with either Stillson or Janus. "Independence Day" shows what Johnny can do stuck in a traffic jam on the highway, ends up as the inside man on a robbery ("The Inside Man"), and infiltrates a cult compound ("Vortex"). Those last two are interesting because they touch on the religious implications of Johnny's gift much more than they usually do on the show. "Symmetry," in which Johnny experiences visions from multiple perspectives, shows that the writers can still come up with interesting twists on the basic premise of Johnny's powers. I was much less enamored with the idea that Gene Purdy has any secrets left when it comes to Johnny ("Revelations"), but having the Collector back for another go round worked out pretty well ("Into the Heart of Darkness"), except for what it says about convenient gaps in Johnny's knowledge that allow for such a sequel to take place.
Another reason I wish the show would put Stillson in the rear view mirror is that it seems like some of the cast members are losing interest. There are a whole bunch of episodes missing one of the characters in this season and already in the current season one of them actually dies (albeit, a fate predicted for them in "Cujo") and at least one more appears to have left the show. But then how many times can Bruce ask Johnny what he is going to do about Stillson? On balance, I still like the show, but the last couple of seasons the USA "Characters welcome" promos have been the best part of "The Dead Zone." Co-creators Michael and Shawn Piller, along with actor Anthony Michael Hall and the rest of the cast, have done an admirable job of turning King's novel into a solid television series, but even without psychic powers I have to believe the end is in sight.

Pretty typical horror movie stuff, but still scary.......2007-07-08
What do you do when you make a horror movie so popular that it not only starts a new horror fad (psychological gore might be a good categorization), but it also spawns three sequels? After the box-office success of Saw, James Wan passed the directorial baton on to Darren Lynn Bousman for the three Saw sequels, while still maintaining a presence in the series as writer and executive producer. Now Wan has teamed up again with writer Leigh Whannell (also from Saw) for the duo's first non-Saw film. Although more of a typical horror movie, Dead Silence isn't that far removed from the eerie tones and frightfully gory movies that their followers have come to expect.
Following the standard plot of a horror movie, Dead Silence is based around a creepy mysterious supernatural villain who is haunting and threatening the main character of the film. About halfway in, it is unsurprisingly revealed that our lead has familial history with the killer. A history that needs to be set right before the ghost's revenge destroys him.
The killer herself happens to be Mary Shaw, of whom much lore has been passed on over the years throughout the small town of Ravens Fair. Once an infamous ventriloquist, who lived in a gigantic theatre on a lake, she was killed in a shocking way and then buried (at her own request) with her 101 dummies. Her trademark is that she waits until you scream, and then kills you by ripping out your tongue, leaving your face a gaping terrifying mess. Now, with the arrival of an unmarked package bearing a dummy named Billy, it appears that Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) and his wife are being haunted by Mary Shaw's ghost. When his wife is brutally murdered, Jamie is Detective Jim Lipton (Donnie Wahlberg)'s number one suspect. For an unexplained reason, Jamie feels the need to then return to his small, almost abandoned town of Ravens Fair to find some answers. In a series of schlocky meetings he finds out what he must do in order to rid himself and his town of the curse of Mary Shaw. As Jamie gets closer to the truth, Detective Lipton begins to realize that maybe there's more to his case than he originally suspected.
What separates this film from its horror peers currently flooding the cinema, and in fact manages to make the film interesting and downright spooky is Wan's tight, focused shots, and unexpected methods of cutting between scenes: unfolding elaborate scenes only to have them fold in on themselves. John R. Leonetti's cinematography uses a color palette that's basically limited to blue, black, grey, green, and the occasional yellow and red keeps the tone of the film decidedly dark, and never lets the audience take in a reassuring breath of relaxation til the film's final moments. What could have been a remastered Chucky tale, with 21st century visual effects and a ventriloquist dummy in place of a red-headed kid's toy, in the hands of James Wan, turns into an enjoyable and lastingly frightening horror romp.
My Lips Are Sealed.......2007-07-07
I'm a big believer in hidden agendas.
My Danny O'Day & Jerry Mahoney dolls are heading for the landfill.
Outstanding, atmospheric, creepy film!!!
Here today, forgotten tomorrow.......2007-07-06
The premise of the movie is interesting, but that's about all. In the last several years, there have been so many horror films, and very few have been able to distinguish themselves. "Dead Silence" is no different. We have the photography that makes everything in a blue wash, the barely coherent plot (in this case, a grudge that begins because a boy can see a ventriloquist's lips moving. Yes, really.), the chorus of celestial voices, the fast motion action. It's as though the director went down a checklist of cliches. Yes, the movie looks good but it doesn't look original; it's just more of the same horror shtick we've been getting.
Fault also lies with the plot: there is a big reveal at the end, as there almost always is, but it would have been much more interesting had it been developed. As it is, the reveal left me wanting more, to finally have the movie make sense, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.
Nothing more than a rental.
Well the town is creepy.......2007-07-05
Just like House of Wax, good set but not so great of a movie. I rented this movie instead of buying it and im glad I did. I have a habit of buying movies before viewiing them. Dvds can be purchased for the price of seeing one in theaters or a rental at the video store. On to the movie, story is pretty weak. I dont see how people enjoyed this been there, done that story that had alright speical effects. Overall, its a renter and not buyer.
Dead on arrival.......2007-07-05
Dead Silence is from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannel; the same duo who crafted the first Saw film and oversaw their sequels. Dead Silence also marks a departure in terms of changing the pace from the torture horror sub-genre to a more typical slasher fare which we get here. The change isn't necessarily for the better either, even though Dead Silence has more going for it than you may think it does. For starters, it's pretty safe to say that many people think of ventriloquist dolls as being creepy by themselves, and here the film doesn't disappoint. Besides the overly creepy atmosphere though, Dead Silence doesn't do much else right in the horror department, and isn't scary or remotely suspenseful one bit. The gore effects aren't much to write home about either, and the film as a whole just feels lazily put together. In the end, you've just got to feel sorry for Donnie Wahlberg (Saw II and III, Band of Brothers) who gets no help as a detective here. All in all, Dead Silence isn't a total turkey, but there's nothing overly redeeming about it either.

Zombies are one of those horror staples that have gotten putrid, after one too many idiotic blood'n'gore-fests with a revolting script. Like poor Dracula, they run out of things to do.
But zombie films are revitalized by the wickedly funny "Shaun of the Dead," a tale of music, love, pubs, and the slobbering undead. In the vein of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive," it's full of twisted humour, funny dialogue and plenty of gore.
Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) are the poster boys for adolescentus slackeritis, living in a London flat with their peeved roommate Pete, who has actually grown up and gotten a real job. Ed plays video games all day, and Shaun's immaturity has just gotten him dumped by his long-suffering girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield).
Wrapped up in his love life woes, Shaun fails to notice a little news item: Human beings all over London are transforming into zombies. At first, Shaun obliviously drowns his sorrows, and has a nasty encounter when he goes to pick up a soda. Now he must mend his relationship with Liz and defend himself and his family from the hordes of ravenous zombies... by barricading them in a pub.
"Shaun" makes the whole genre seem fresh just because it doesn't take itself seriously. The heroes don't even have guns (since the UK public don't get them), and so our heroes fend off the zombies with vinyl records, shovels and cricket bats. That gives an idea of how serious this movie is.
"Shaun of the Dead" isn't so much a zombie movie as a love story with zombies -- a very funny one, with lots of gore. We're treated to slackers in love, Shaun drifting obliviously around London withoutn noticing the undead, and some very entertaining dialogue ("Just look at the face: it's vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who's lost a bet...")
Later on, he's forced to shake off his obliviousness in order to save his loved ones, with a bat as his only weapon. And maybe some commandos in a tank. It's gory, and the ending gets a bit cliched and overserious, but the ride up until then is wonderfully scripted and full of hilarious crude comic moments. Not sex-organ/bathroom humor, but definitely not highbrow.
Everybody knows guys like Shaun and Ed. Pegg perfectly plays a slacker with a heart of gold, who would like to be more than he is, but doesn't have the slightest clue how to go about it. Frost is a good annoying sidekick for Shaun, and Ashfield does a good job as the long-suffering girlfriend.
As a bonus, music geeks will laugh themselves silly over such important decisions as: which albums should our reluctant heroes throw at the zombies? "Stone Roses?" "No." "...Second Coming?" "I liked it." "Dire Straits?" "Chuck it!" Good choice, Shaun m'boy.
While it's a hilarious movie, it's not a spoof -- rather it's a zombie movie with wit, love and comedy. By not taking itself too seriously, "Shaun of the Dead" ends up revitalizing a genre that seemed like it was... well, almost dead.

Frank Capra made this film in 1941 before he went off to make films for America's war effort, but it wasn't released until 1944. Adapted from the hit play by Joseph Kesselring, this frantic black comedy shows Capra at his best as a master of mood and timing. Actresses Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprise their Broadway performances as two gentle old ladies who poison men with elderberry wine to put them out of their misery. Cary Grant plays one nephew, a normal guy who just gets wind of their little hobby and tries to get them to stop, while Raymond Massey plays another, a villain just escaped from jail. Capra encourages the cast, especially Grant, to give a somewhat more outsized performance than one might expect. But made during the war years as it was, this overstated comic approach to killing was probably cathartic. --Tom Keogh

Arsnic & Old Lace.......2007-06-27
A Classic screwball comedy with Cary Grant at his best. Also starring Josephine Hull who reprises her Broadway role in a 5 star performance. Black and white movies do not get any better than this. A must see for all fans.
Hilarious Dark Comedy.......2007-05-15
Arsenic and Old Lace, will appeal to children and adults alike. It is the classic Halloween movie. Poor, Mortimer Brewster(Cary Grant) is mixed up with his crazy relatives who have a penchant for murder. Murder done in a benevolant way. The acting is superb and laugh follows laugh in this happy dark comedy. This will appeal to those of you who have wacky relatives or those of you who are the wacky relatives. That's why it is good for both adults and kids.

believe it or not, and I wondered how I missed this wonderful comedy all these years! My friend and I were in New Zealand and happened to be in our hotel room switching channels on the t.v. when we came across it. We laughed till our stomachs hurt! Wonderful movie; highly recommended!
