A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars BEST WRITTEN AND CLASSIEST OF THE CLASSICS.......2007-07-05

I'm guessing Casablanca is the most referenced film in history. It is known as the best written script, among other things. The story behind the writing of Casablanca is one of the best stories in cinema. It was being written while the film was being shot, so no one knew how it would end. It is the classiest of the classics.

The story is a love triangle, but it is innocent enough. Rick (Humphrey Bogart) was in love with Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) in Paris before the war. She had been married, but thought her husband was dead. They make plans to leave Paris before the Germans march in, but on the night they're supposed to leave, Ilsa's husband resurfaces; so she leaves Rick standing in the train station in the rain with no explanation.

Rick goes to Casablanca and opens a nightclub to forget his loss. It is the swankiest place in town and where everyone meets. It is also a place of intrigue. One night, Ilsa and her husband, Victor Laslo (Paul Henreid), show up in Rick's nightclub. Since Paris, Laslo has become an international hero fighting for the resistance against the Nazi fascists. They have come to Casablanca because he is being hunted by the Nazis, and Casablanca is about the only place to catch a flight out of occupied Europe.

Victor and Ilsa need papers of transit to leave Casablanca, but they are hard to come by. Rumor has it that Rick has papers of transit that were stolen off two dead German couriers; so Ilsa uses her old relationship with Rick to try and get them - not so much for herself as for Victor. Victor needs to get to the United States to continue his work for the resistance.

Victor doesn't know about Ilsa and Rick's past relationship, or what she is doing now to try to get the needed papers. The Nazis have promised that Victor will die in Casablance; and, because they control the Vichy government that rules there, they can probably carry through on their threat. Captain Renault (Claude Rains), is Rick's friend and the corrupt police official of Casablanca: he blows with whatever wind comes along, and, as he puts it, at present that wind is coming from Vichy. So he's not willing to help.

At the same time, Ilsa is torn between her old love for Rick and her continued love for Victor. Rick still holds a grudge against Ilsa from Paris and is basically self-serving - so he's not interested in helping anyone. He makes a great show of not believing in causes or heroes. But is that really the way he is? Everything hinges on what Rick will do. Everyone thinks they know him, but no one is sure. As the tension mounts, his character is the key to everyone's future.

Casablanca is full of interesting and wonderful characters. Humphrey Bogart plays the enigmatic Rick. Ingrid Bergman is breathtakingly beautiful as Ilsa Laslo. Paul Henreid is stoic as Victor Laslo. Claude Rains plays the debonair Captain Renault. Conrad Veidt plays the despicable Nazi Major Strasser. Sydney Greenstreet is his usual mercenary and rotund self as Rick's business competition, Signor Ferrari. Peter Lorre is the pitifully underhanded Ugarte. S.Z. (Cuddles) Sakall is the wonderful waiter Carl. Madeleine LeBeau plays the singer Yvonne. Dooley Wilson is Rick's man and pianist, the memorable Sam. The list goes on and on.

The ambiance of Casablanca, and of Rick's Restaurant American in particular, is part of the wonder of the film. Warner Bros. created a world that, even though it was threatening and war torn, continues to mesmerize audiences. We can't get enough of Rick's or the interesting characters who come there. As they say in the film, "Everyone comes to Rick's." We also can't seem to get enough of that classic 1940's style: the tuxedos, the evening dresses - even the uniforms. The 40's were the apex of sartorial style.

There are so many memorable quotes from Casablanca that you could almost reproduce the script recalling them. Here are a few:

Annina: Monsieur Rick, what kind of a man is Captain Renault?
Rick: Oh, he's just like any other man, only more so.

Major Strasser: You give him credit for too much cleverness. My impression was that he's just another blundering American.
Captain Renault: We musn't underestimate American blundering. I was with them when they blundered into Berlin in 1918.

Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris?
Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Paris.
Heinz: Can you imagine us in London?
Rick: When you get there, ask me!
Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!
Major Strasser: How about New York?
Rick: Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

Ugarte: You despise me, don't you?
Rick: If I gave you any thought I probably would.

Ugarte: Rick, think of all the poor devils who can't meet Renault's price. I get it for them for half. Is that so... parasitic?
Rick: I don't mind a parasite. I object to a cut-rate one.

Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far ahead.

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.

Captain Renault: I've often speculated why you don't return to America. Did you abscond with the church funds? Run off with a senator's wife? I like to think you killed a man. It's the Romantic in me.
Rick: It was a combination of all three.

Rick: Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.

Captain Renault: I was informed you were the most beautiful woman ever to visit Casablanca. That was a gross understatement.

Rick: You know what I want to hear.
Sam: [lying] No, I don't.
Rick: You played it for her, you can play it for me!
Sam: [lying] Well, I don't think I can remember...
Rick: If she can stand it, I can! Play it!

(The famous line, "Play it again, Sam" never appears in the film.)

Rick: [to Ilsa] ...Here's looking at you, kid.

Senor Ferrari: Might as well be frank, monsieur. It would take a miracle to get you out of Casablanca, and the Germans have outlawed miracles.

Rick: And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart.
Captain Renault: That is my least vulnerable spot.

Captain Renault: Round up the usual suspects.

Rick: Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Great lines. Great script. Great film.

Casablanca won three Oscars: Best Director (Michael Curtiz), Best Picture (Hal Wallis) and Best Screenplay (Julius Epstein, Philip Epstein and Howard Koch). It was also nominated for Best Actor (Bogart), Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains), Best Cinematography (Arthur Edeson), Best Film Editing (Owen Marks) and Best Music Score (Max Steiner).

What can I say that hasn't been said before about this movie? For those few that have been living under a rock: Casablanca is about Rick a Cafe owner who "I don't stick my neck out for nobody" is his life's motto, and how this motto begins to wreck at him when his old flame (has Ingrid Bergman ever looked better?) comes back into his life.
The movie has it all: Suspence, romance, humor (in spades), and that song!
Watch it, just because it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Casablanca.......2007-06-21

No film has embedded itself more firmly in the collective imagination than this captivating, still-unparalleled romance adventure, which epitomizes everything that Hollywood filmmaking--at its very best--strives to be. Was there ever a more unlikely yet perfect pairing than the radiant Bergman and the world-weary Bogart? Portraying the twilight of civilized society in a foreign place, and the rising menace of new world evils, director Curtiz masterfully juggles tragedy and humor, intrigue and action to tell a timeless story rich in personal and political detail. And what an indelible, heart-catching finale! "Casablanca" won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, and continues to mesmerize on repeat viewings.

A distant and animated sequel to the 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance concerns the tale of Colin MacLeod, a 2nd century, Celtic warrior who becomes immortal following his defeat at the hands of Roman tyrant Marcus Octavius. Colin spends the next couple of millenia chasing after Marcus--also immortal--as the latter reinvents himself time and again as a ruler of kingdoms in every corner of the globe. The longtime duel extends into Earth's dystopian future about 200 years from now, where Colin--now a wandering mercenary--finds Marcus once again making lives miserable as head of a private government wielding a deadly virus. Drawing Colin into the fight is the lovely Dahlia, hauntingly reminiscent of every woman the hero has loved over hundreds of years. Dynamic, visually compelling, and boldly imaginative, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is full of surprises and more than just another story of an embittered loner meandering through a futuristic wasteland. Directed by the prolific Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Neo-Tokyo). --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars There Can Be Only One ... Except In Franchise Versions.......2007-07-02

Any time any established 'franchise' property gets an animated treatment, there's a strong tendency to do comparisons between the different versions of the established 'mythology.' Will be toon/anime be as good as the film versions? Will it be as good as the television series? For that matter, was the television series as good as the film that launched the franchise? Etc. and so forth. We're all human -- the great irony in the grand debate about an idea centered on immortals -- and maybe that, in the end, is what the HIGHLANDER franchise is telling us about ourselves: we'll always be looking for something not so much as 'new' as it is a mild 'change' to the original.

As a tweak to the HIGHLANDER history, HIGHLANDER: THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE may OR may not serve as a jumping on point for new fans as well as a great reason for the established fans to get together and watch as an audience; I say "may or may not" because I don't know. I've only seen the first two films and a handful of the television episodes, so my perspective is not really of fandom nor the uninitiated 'newbie.' Simply, I enjoy genre movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed VEANGEANCE for what it was: another outing within the myths set into motion by the original film.

I've read a handful of reviews that have strongly criticized the animation -- "wasn't strong enough," "wasn't visual enough," "wasn't different enough" -- and I'd have to agree that there were some sequences that felt a bit derivative of other anime ... but I'd have to defend the film by saying that it didn't distract from my overall enjoyment of seeing Colin MacLeod in his quest to vanquish fellow immortal but sworn enemy Marcus Octavius (sp?) for all of the pain caused throughout the centuries. Every joy Colin has found -- from women, to family, to friendship -- has been destroyed at Marcus's hands, and THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE is, at its core, about the good old-fashioned cinematic qualities of 'payback.' Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't anything poetic here, per se, except for the fact that history's one true immortal -- love -- will eventually find you again even if the one person who provided it keeps changing.

Outside of that, VEANGEANCE offers enough excitement to keep any HIGHLANDER fan -- new or old -- welcome at the table of the Clan MacLeod for one more adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good... And I'm no fan of highlander.......2007-06-24

I never followed the original Highlander. To be honest, what little bit I caught throughout the years was not enough to even get my long term attention. I saw Endgame back in 2000 and I can't remember if I liked it or not. I feel my ignorance of the movies is a good thing because there was nothing for me to expect. Now after saying that, I have to admit that I found this enjoyable and it has a permanent home in my collection of anime.

This movie is nothing more than a tale of blind revenge. Colin's lover was killed by another immortal named Marcus and he set out for revenge. I found it funny as he11. It was just laugh out loud funny to me for the simple fact the guy chased him for 2000 years. He either got beat up or came up short. The flashbacks of him chasing Marcus even through the great wars such as world war 2 in airplanes was just hilarious.

The plot was pretty weak but the action scenes past and present definitly makes up for this. The voice acting for the characters was pretty good. The old man's spirit who taged along with Colin provided some good comedy.

The animation was pretty good to include the soundtrack. And like I said before the action scenes were great. Lots of shooting and swordplay.

For that price, I recommend this to anyone who likes hack and slash type anime. Since I'm not a real fan of Highlander it doesn't make sense to say that all or even most Highlander fans will be satisfied. If your a fan I guess you should check it out.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-06-20

This was one of the best animated movies I have ever seen.
Powerful characters, great acting.

4 out of 5 stars The search for a good sequel is over.......2007-06-17

Since the notorious "Highlander II: The Quickening" was released in 1991, the legions of "Highlander" fans around the world have longed for a good sequel. The producers made a second attempt with 1994's "Highlander III: The Sorcerer," the result being better than "Highlander II," but still far from a fine sequel. The most recent attempt, 2000's "Highlander: Endgame," teamed the movies' Connor MacLeod with the television series' Duncan MacLeod, but the film was too dark, too violent, and too shallow. 2007 promised two more "Highlander" sequels: the live-action "Highlander: The Source," directed by Brett Leonard, and an anime film, "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance," directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the prolific anime director behind "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and "Ninja Scroll."

It's curious that somebody didn't think to make "Highlander" as anime before, because it's a perfect match. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is proof of that. The film is essentially a Japanese re-telling of the "Highlander" legend, this time revolving around Colin MacLeod (who, for those of you fed up with all these immortal MacLeods, is just adopted into the clan). He begins life in the first century A.D., preparing to lead his army of 400 against an army of 4,000 Romans led by Marcus, an evil immortal in love with the concept of Rome. Colin's one true love sedates him one night and visits Marcus to beg for Colin's life - but when she refuses to sleep with him and "murders" him instead, Marcus crucifies her and surprises Colin's sleeping army. 2,000 years later, in future post-apocalyptic New Jersey and then New York, a bitter, relentless Colin MacLeod lives for his quest for vengeance, and nothing more.

It's an interesting story, written by David Abramowitz, the man responsible for much of "Highlander" the series' greatness. It also adds a newly fantastic element to the "Highlander" saga, including horned demons, multi-headed ghouls, and a very amusing (and for Colin, obnoxious) ghost named Amergan. All this is stylishly and beautifully drawn according to Kawajiri's hard-edged vision. It's at once a bloody tale of vengeance through the ages, an explosive futuristic sci-fi actioner, and an intelligent love story of reincarnation. It's also, without question, the first good "Highlander" sequel. It's ironic that the sequel we fans have been longing for for so long has arrived in the form of an animated film, but rejoice! It has. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is a great movie and an excellent sequel, and if you're a "Highlander" or anime fan, it's essential. How wonderful it feels to have the franchise's trademark line, "There can be only one," no longer apply to its films.

5 out of 5 stars A remake done right........2007-06-13

I wasn't sure about what to expect from this one. I mean, everybody loves the Highlander franchise, but what would the Japanese take on it be? The answer is a brillaint animated reinvention of a bonafide action/fantasy classic with all of the thrills of the original propery and none of the baggage of the sequels. As with the preceding work of animated genius, "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" (which shares a director and artistic style with this film), this was a true collaberation between eastern and western styles and ideas. The result is extremely complimentary and I can only hope we see more of this in the future. If you aren't familiar with the original film, I'd suggest you view it before taking this one on, as very little time is wasted on exposition. The writers assume you know what's up and treat the story accordingly. The biggest difference between the original films and series is that Colin McCloud's focus isn't on hunting the other immortals to gain their quickening and the whole "there can be only one" battle royale aspect. In fact, he attempts to avoid a confrontation early on with an adversary (with a giant chainsaw...cooool!) who seeks to take his head for that reason. Colin wants the blood of one man and one man only: Marcus Octavius, the Roman ruler who crucified his wife and destroyed his homeland. His quest for vengeance has him chasing his much-more-skilled adversary throughout human history; from feudal Japan to WWII to where we meet him in a post-apocalyptic future (my favorite kind of future!). He is accompanied only by the spirit of an old druid and his 2000 years of hatred as he tracks his foe to a ruined city full of sick, wretched souls living underground in need of a champion to lead them in revolution. But Colin has wasted his entire existence pursuing vengeance, so what does he care, right? Perhaps a bit of perspective on the nature of life, even mortal life, can show him the way. The story is great, the art is beautiful, the action is brutal, and yes there is sex and nudity involved so don't buy it for the kiddies. This is great, R-rated animated entertainment and a great way to spend an hour-and-a-half. It's also a wonderful tribute and addition to a franchise that has seldom lived up to it's potential. Like I said, this is a remake done right; it reinvents the characters and concepts of the original without being just a copy. Now if only Queen had been on the soundtrack....

World War I aviation action gets an impressive digital upgrade in Flyboys, a welcome addition to the "dogfight" sub-genre that includes such previous war-in-the-air films like Hell's Angels, Wings, and The Blue Max. While those earlier films had the advantage of real and genuinely dangerous flight scenes (resulting, in some cases, in fatal accidents during production), Flyboys takes full (and safe) advantage of the digital revolution, with intensely photo-realistic recreations of WWI aircraft, authentic period structures, and CGI environments requiring a total of 850 digital effects shots, resulting in an abundance of amazing images, many of them virtually indistinguishable from reality. Unfortunately, the film's technical achievement is more impressive than its screenplay, which conventionally and predictably tells the fact-based story, set in France in 1916, of the daring young pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, a pioneering French air-combat unit that welcomed American enlistees prior to the United States' entry into the war.

There's a familiar cliché to match every thrilling scene of aerial combat, but director Tony Bill manages to keep it all interesting, from the romance between a young American maverick (James Franco) and a pretty French girl (newcomer Jennifer Decker) to the exciting action in the air, which includes a stock variety of heroes (many of them composites of real-life WWI pilots) and an intimidating villain known only as "The Black Falcon," whose Fokker Dr-1 triplane (one of many in the film) recalls the exploits of German "ace of aces" Manfred von Richtofen, the dreaded "Red Baron" of legend. With impeccable production values that will impress even the most nit-picking aviation buffs, Flyboys (like Superman Returns and Apocalypto, also released in 2006) was also one of the first feature films to be shot with Panavision's state-of-the-art Genesis digital cameras, resulting in beautiful images that meet or exceed the visual nuance of film. Flyboys also benefits from painstaking attention to physical detail, making it easier to forgive its shortcomings as a generic and formulaic slice of romanticized history. So while some viewers may have wished for a more realistic and grown-up depiction of the Lafayette Escadrille, it's safe to say that Flyboys will be thrilling its target audience for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Regardless of what others say..........2007-07-08

This is a very good movie. Being an aviation buff for many years, I am so glad that movie making technology has reached the state it has today when aircaft have a chance to be represented at least CLOSE to what they actually looked like. Just look at some of the previous movies where enemy aircraft have been represented by aircraft which they did not even closely resemble: P-51 Mustangs painted gray to represent Me-109 German aircraft in WWII movies or AT-6 aircraft marked with Japanese insignia. The reason: they were not available anywhere either in flying condition or even for display on a flying field. Maybe the aircraft in "Flyboys" weren't completely historically correct in markings or the combat scenes weren't what you would expect but how many of the reviewers of this movie are historical experts or have ever seen a Neuiport 17? Maybe the computer folks who made this movie needed to do a little more research on markings and such before they released this movie but at least their techniques are a start. Give them credit for that. As far as the story line goes, Hollywood will ALWAYS be Hollywood and action and love stories sell. If you don't like what you see on screen maybe you should try reading a book.

I usually do not review films, but in this case I feel it neccessary. I have been a World War I aviation buff for many years. When I first heard that someone was making a film about this subject I knew that I had to see it. My disappointment when I finally saw the film can hardly be imagined. It's not just that they drag in every movie cliche thats ever been used in this type of story; there is literally not a single authentic detail or presentation of such detail in this film. The airplanes are wrong, the airplane paint jobs, markings. armaments are wrong. The clothes and uniforms are wrong, even the airfield that these guys are flying out of is wrong. It appears that the film makers, instead of researching information on life as a volunteer in the french air service of that period, opted for looking at old hollywood movies on this subject. Watch this film for whatever entertainment value it may have , but not to get an idea of what World War I aerial combat was like.

I hadn't heard much about this movie and I hadn't heard of any of the actors before so I was reluctant to watch it, but it's a great medium-budget movie! I love all war/historical movies that are based on real people. This movie follows about 7 military pilots in WWI that are based on real Americans or on composite characters. It's not as dramatic and over-the-top as a big-budget war movie, but that makes it a lighter form of entertainment. I'm going to buy the DVD so I can watch it again and share it with other people, whereas I couldn't stomach re-watching Private Ryan. If you've ever enjoyed an airshow, you'll love the old-time planes in the movie. The pilots are exposed to the elements, sticking out of small paper-wing airplanes with prop engines that need to be started by hand, and glide to a stop in open fields. One of the characters says "planes were only invented 10 years ago!" All the pilots had interesting life stories, one an aristocrat, one the son of a slave.. there is also a love story with the James Franco/Blaine character which I liked (he's quite handsome!).

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Docudrama.......2007-07-07

Every movie that's I've seen that is based on a true story has it's flaws, however, I like the entertainment and often how afterwards it drives me to learn more about the history behind the movie. This was very entertaining and even at times realize how bad war really is. I could relate to the characters and each of their internal conflicts that they were battling.

Definitely worth the time to watch and I'm still considering keeping this film to watch again.

4 out of 5 stars No cliches just a slice of history........2007-07-06

This isn't a great movie. It's a good movie. It's worth the time and money. I liked it for two reasons: It provided a look at an remarkable piece of history and gave the viewer a sense of how loss effected the new fliers. It's applicable today. I came back with another new distinction about life.

Thai-born martial artist Tony Jaa, whose gravity-defying stunts wowed American audiences in Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior, returns in an equally eye-popping stunt fest that should thrill all but the most jaded action fans. The very simple plot has the soft-spoken, mild-mannered Jaa as a young man from a rural community dispatched to Australia to recover a pair of sacred elephants. Once there, he discovered that a female crime boss (played by transgendered actor Jing Xing) is behind the missing pachyderms, and Jaa pulls out all the stops to recover the animals for his village. As in Ong-Bak, the appeal of The Protector is watching Jaa unleash his muay thai skills on a host of villainous types, and he gets several astonishing showcases in this film, most notably a nearly-unbroken take in which he dispatches some 50 goons as he makes his way up a four-story structure. Those looking for the depth of story or character found in the best of Hong Kong action cinema won't find it in The Protector, but the rewards for action fans are plentiful and thoroughly entertaining. The two-disc Collector's Edition of The Protector includes a wealth of extras, most notably the original Thai version of the film (titled Tom Yum Goong), which runs approximately 30 minutes longer than the American version. Commentary by martial arts writer and fan Bey Logan is featured on the American edit, along with a deleted scene, a featurette about Jaa with Logan and rapper/producer The RZA (who scored the American version and, for some reason, is described as a major force in bringing Asian entertainment to the States), making-of featurettes on both the English and Thai versions of the film (the latter features a subtitled Thai-language commentary track with Jaa, director Prachya Pinkaew, and stunt coordinator/mentor Panna Rittikrai), and three fair short films that were produced for a promotional tie-in contest. -- Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars Another Movie I'm Drawn On..........2007-06-26

I can't give this a 5. I am a person who is interested in movie plots, and the plot for this movie was ridiculous! All of this over a elephant? LMAO. That's all I could think as I watched this. And while the action was pretty good, I think this movie went overboard with it. This movie was one long fight scene to me. You mean to tell me one person can take on 30 people AT ONE TIME and barely be harmed?!?! And also, after fighting and beating about 80 people he was almost beaten by one woman?!!? I know this is meant to be an action film which is why I'm not too harsh on the weak plot, but even the action was a little too much.

4 out of 5 stars Best martial arts action since Bruce Lee...you have to see it believe it.......2007-06-19

Comparing this to Bruce Lee films, this movie could of replaced "The Game Of Death", as the final film worthy of anything close to Bruce's work.

Its jaw dropping. And Tony Jaa is actually, literally doing every move you see him doing in the movie. No wires, no CGI. He is a very special individual, who is definatly his own person.

The movie is to be watched for fun. This is classic martial arts moviedom...not just a bunch of laughable "high art" the likes of "HERO".

If anyone loved Bruce Lee's movies, like The Big Boss, or The Chinese Connection, or Fist Of Fury, this movie "The Protector" , i believe, would of made Bruce Lee proud.

Tony Jaa is the closest one ive ever witnessed to even carry honorable or deserved comparison to the greatness that Bruce Lee performed on film.

He is the next great martial arts super star of the big screen.

This is a classic. And is done in pretty good taste. And is lots and lots of fun. I was very impressed and inspired after seeing this film.

It is Thailands turn to show the world what theyve got.
And what theyve got is the greatest martial art star since Bruce Lee himself....

...TONY JAA.

Ya gotta see it to believe it!

3 out of 5 stars action-packed slug fest........2007-05-27

Thin plotted like the other one, but another Tony Jaa action banquet.

2 out of 5 stars bad editing job.......2007-05-21

This movie was a headache to watch. The sequences throughout the film aren't really smooth and consistent. I found myself saying "hey, wait a minute". I thought that maybe I wasn't paying attention to the movie but then quickly figured out that it was the "style" of the film.

Plus, as a Deaf person, I found myself having to switch back and forth with the subtitles and captions. Some scenes are spoken in Thai, which are subtitled. However, once English is spoken, I had to switch to captions. Usually, the captions or subtitles will take care of everything...not this film.

Anyways, this movie is about avenging the theft of royal elephants (and the death of one), which were raised for the king's service. So, Kham is sent to Australia to return the elephants. Simple plot.

What I loved about this movie was the fight scenes. I found myself grimacing as I saw these scenes. I don't think I've ever seen one man fight against so many people...not even with Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.

5 out of 5 stars Jaa does it again! Only BIGGER!.......2007-04-29

Wow, this guy just gets better and better. I was worried 20 minutes or so into the movie as there'd been no action to speak of -- what an idiot! Just like in Ong Bak, there's a slow build up and then it's just 80+ minutes or so of pure butt-kicking action.

The fight in the temple is superb. The pre-finale battle with the joint breaking is incredible. But!!! The staircase scene. Oh, man! Can this boy fight or what! Initially I wondered what the hell was going on as some of the action is off-screen - dumb of what, this is an action film, SHOW THE ACTION. Yeah, like second time I was an idiot. Then you realise the entire, extended fight scene is shot entirely in one take using one camera - hence some strange angles. WOW! That really puts this guy in perspective. Look at some of our western movie 'heros' - take Matt Damon in all the Borne movies. The tiniest bit of hand-to-hand fighting and there's hundreds of camera shots and an editing frenzy like the editor's tripping. Why? Because Damon can't fight, so they make up for it with 'slick' photography. Stick Tony Jaa in a room with one camera and 20 bad guys and watch this guy burn every last one - one take, one angle, NO TRICKS.

Jaa is a phenomena. Has to be seen to be believed. And with the subject matter - while it might seem sappy to some, it looks like the guy actually might have heart too. Can't wait for his next movie.

--Tom Keogh

Description

Won 3 Oscars - Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2007-06-25

Usually it might seem a tad unfair to begin a review by referring to the director's missis. But then the missis in question wouldn't usually be Madonna--a woman whose ability to reinvent herself several times before breakfast seems in marked contrast to that of hubby Guy Ritchie. Certainly, this follow-up to the filmmaker's breakthrough film--the high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels--hardly breaks new ground being, well, another high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie. OK, so there are some differences. This time around our low-rent hoodlums are battling over dodgy fights and stolen diamonds rather than dodgy card games and stolen drugs. There has been some minor reshuffling of the cast too, with Sting and Dexter Fletcher making way for the more bankable Benicio Del Toro and Brad Pitt, the latter pretty much stealing the whole shebang as an incomprehensible Irish gypsy. And, sure, people who really, really liked Lock, Stock--or have the memory of a goldfish--will really, really like this. The suspicion lingers, however, that if the director doesn't do something very different next time around then his career may prove to be considerably shorter than that of his missis. --Clark Collis

4 out of 5 stars Stealin' stones and Breakin' Bones.......2007-06-27

What a follow-up to "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels!" It's the closest thing to a sequel without being one. Some say that "Snatch" is a poor follow up of Ritchie's first film, I say that this is an improvement on his signature style, an aggressive and a supercharged 21-gun salute to Britain film/filmmakers. The deftness displayed in this writer/director's pacing and editing is at times electrifying and sometimes simply beautiful. The soundtrack is not only superb and includes one of my personal favorite bands, Oasis, and is used to great comic effect as an poignant accompaniment to certain scenes.

In the vein of Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, and Fight Club, Snatch is a gritty dance with the criminal element, revolving around a stolen 86-karat diamond that any good crook would give his right arm for. (And in one case, I mean that literally.)After a boggling series of double-crosses, triple-crosses, and multi-crosses, Snatch becomes a game of who will end up with the gem -- and how will they get it? Ritchie keeps us guessing at every turn, with Russians hiring mercenary crooks to steal the jewel, hit men sent to kill the mercenaries, mobsters trying to outwit the hit men, Jewish jewelers scheming to undermine the mobsters, a crazed bare-knuckled boxer looking for his payday despite the chaos, and one dog who's lost his bark.

And every one of these stories is hilarious.

Vinnie Jones as Bullet Tooth Tony, a hunter/assassin who chills his prey with deadly stares; Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) is caught-in-the-middle robber/gambling addict; Dennis Farina, a stressed jeweler who can never catch a break; or any of two dozen other apt actors who fully own their roles. In the end, though, you have to give a hand to Brad Pitt, still buff from Fight Club, as a slur-mouthed Gypsy boxer who always manages to get one step ahead of the crowd.

"Snatch" is great. There are some funny lines, and some of the violence is quite inventive. Several times in this movie I was reminded of the "strange occurrences" theme seen in Magnolia. I wholeheartedly recommend this film if you haven't already snatch it.

5 out of 5 stars wish I would have seen this movie sooner........2007-06-21

Guy Ritche slid this one out a few years ago, and I missed it. A good cast including Jason Statham plays Turkish (the transporter, Crank) and Brad Pitt as mickey, the bare knuckle gypsy boxer. Essentially an Action Comedy. Turkish, a unlicenced boxing promoter, narrates the story as it revolves around and 84 carrot Diamond, and what eventually turns out to be a stuggle to try and save his own hide from Brick top, the underground promoter that "tells you what will happen". Its intriguing how thing and paths finally entertwine. Must see. If you like Lock, stock and two smoking barrels, this one I believe is better. And if You like Jason Statham, this movie is good as well. A good movie for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden treasure.......2007-06-15

A very funny movie with an amazing Brad Pitt as a Gipsy boxing champ. The storyline is great, and the movie never had a dull moment. The director keeps your attention by leading the audience through the story with video clip styled movie scenes. The actors themselves play accordingly, so after watching the movie you'll end up with a big smile on your face.

I was upset that I wasted my money on this film. The film is extremely overrated. At best it should have only gotten 3 stars. I do not see what there is to like about this film. It was not funny, the plot was stupid, everybody's running around trying to find a diamond and the movie just ends so abruptly, not a comfortable ending at all. If you have never seen this film I highly suggest that you rent it before you buy it.

There were a lot of disappointments in the 2000 summer movie season, but Chicken Run wasn't one of them. Made by Aardman Animations, which produced the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts, this is a dazzling stop-motion animation film that is both deftly funny and surprisingly touching. The concept is simple: The Great Escape--with chickens. But directors Peter Lord and Nick Park take it much further than that (and remember: there's a whole generation out there that has no idea who Steve McQueen is). Julia Sawalha voices Ginger, a plucky English hen who has been trying to escape from Tweedy's chicken farm, where the vicious Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) fries up any chicken who doesn't produce enough eggs. When egg profits slump, Mrs. Tweedy decides to turn her farm into a chicken-pie factory, giving new urgency to Ginger's plan. Enter Rocky the Flying Rooster (Mel Gibson), a brash American who has escaped from a circus and promises to teach the chickens to fly to safety. The film is filled with innumerable visual touches and the animation has a tactile quality that makes you want to reach out and touch these funny fowl. Above all, it's played with intelligence, wit, and heart--a rare combination in any film. While Chicken Run is being marketed to a youth audience, it truly is a family film that operates on both a child and an adult level. It would be a shame if grownups skipped it because they thought it was strictly for kids. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars NUNCA DEJAR DE CREER NI DE SOÑAR!!!.......2007-07-06

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Run has such an wonderful message of hope........2007-06-13

Chicken Run came out when I had been laid off from my job and while I thoroughly enjoyed the film, I was also boosted by it's tremendous message of hope. Ginger Chicken replied to the comment "Our chances are one-in-a-million" with "Then there's still a chance." The story is so great and the characters so well crafted, in all the times I've seen the movie, I never find myself focusing on the production using clay-mation. One of these days, I'll have to watch it purely to marvel at what it must have taken to create it. I love the cleverly placed references to other prison movies, to Indiana Jones and to Star Trek. Whenever I am feeling despondent or beginning to feel there's no hope, I always return to Chicken Run and those plucky little chickens who just wouldn't give up.

    5 out of 5 stars But I don't want to be a pie!.......2007-06-10

A absolutely wonderful claymation that will have you cheering for Ginger and her coop of delightful chickens. Once again, I'm drawn to another story about the great fight for freedom...despite the fact I'm salivating for a nice chicken salad as I type this. This movie is a great family film and one you won't mind watching again and again. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!!.......2007-06-10

I'm an "adult" but I love this movie. I can watch it over and over and it's just as hilarious as the first time. A must see.

This true story of the black flyers who broke the color barrier in the U.S. Air Force during World War II is a well-intentioned film highlighted by an excellent cast. Proud, solemn, Iowa-born Laurence Fishburne and city-kid hipster Cuba Gooding Jr. are among the hopefuls who meet en route to Tuskegee Air Force Base, where they are among the recruits for an "experimental" program to "prove" the abilities of the black man in the U.S. armed services. Fighting prejudice from racist officers and government officials and held to a consistently higher level of performance than their white counterparts, these men prove themselves in training and in combat, many of them dying for their country in the process. Andre Braugher costars as a West Point graduate who takes charge of the unit in Africa and in Italy (where it's christened the 332nd). The film is rousing, if slow starting and episodic, but it's periodically grounded by a host of war movie clichés, notably the calculated demise of practically every trainee introduced in the opening scenes (ironic given the 332nd's real-life combat record--high casualties for the enemy, low casualties among themselves, and no losses among the bombers they escorted). Ultimately the Emmy-nominated performances by moral backbone Fishburne and the dedicated Braugher and the energy and cocky confidence of Gooding give their battles both on and off the battlefield the sweet taste of victory. --Sean Axmaker

      4 out of 5 stars Military film.......2007-05-14

Great flic. Some liberties taken with regard to the Tuskeegee situation, but overall gives a fair representation of the attitudes of the time. Good action scenes, with a very good performance by Fishburne. Highly recommend the film.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it.......2007-05-07

My father was one of the men who were depicted in this movie. I thought it was well worth watching, it will be a legacy to pass on to my children, thanks to the well acted script.

      5 out of 5 stars black saviors.......2007-05-07

this is one of those movies everyone should own. this movie depicts how the african american group of soldiers played a major role in winning parts of a war when african americans were not even considered to be real soldiers in the american armed forces.

      5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-04-18

I'm a huge mark for History movies, so it was quite a shock that I'd never heard of this movie before seeing it on cable TV for the first time. Now I'm bordering on obsessed. It's a good thing I can watch it anytime I want.

The real story of colored men and their contributions to World War 2. Their triumphs, tragedies and all the obstacles they overcame to contribute to America's victory in the Great War. It's clear to anyone who studies history that the valiant contribution of these brave men could have literally spelled the difference between victory and defeat. Their bravery in the face of adversity ON THEIR OWN HOME SOIL hardened them... battle-readied them... in a way that no white flyer could say he was hardened.

Men boarded those planes to fly off to battle... heroes landed the planes, returning from the mission.

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best WWII films out there!.......2007-04-16
