Previously criticized for her marginal acting skills, Sofia Coppola made her directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides and silenced her detractors. No amount of coaching from her director father (Francis Coppola) or husband (Spike Jonze) could have guaranteed a film this assured, and in adapting Jeffrey Eugenides's novel, Coppola demonstrates the sensitivity and emotional depth that this material demands. Surely the pain of youth and public criticism found its way into her directorial voice; in the story of four sisters who self-destruct under the steady erosion of their youthful ideals, one can clearly sense Coppola's intimate connection to the inner lives of her characters.

Played in a delicate minor key, the film is heartbreaking, mysterious, and soulfully funny, set in a Michigan suburb of the mid-1970s but timeless and universal to anyone who's been a teenager. The four surviving Lisbon sisters lost a sibling to suicide, and as its title suggests, the film will chart their mutual course to oblivion under the vigilance of repressive parents (Kathleen Turner and James Woods, perfectly cast). But The Virgin Suicides is more concerned with life in that precious interlude of adolescence, when the Lisbon girls are worshipped by the neighborhood boys, their notion of perfection epitomized by Lux (Kirsten Dunst) and her storybook love for high-school stud Trip (Josh Hartnett). Unfolding at the cusp of innocence and sexual awakening, and recalled as a memory, The Virgin Suicides is, ultimately, about the preservation of the Lisbon sisters by their own deaths--suspended in time, polished to perfection, and forever untainted by adulthood. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Sensual and tragic.......2007-06-12

I've been hypnotized by this film from the moment it came out, and by the book before it.
Eugenides' novel reads like a series of glimpses into the mystery that is (or was) the Lisbon girls. I think Sofia Coppola does a wonderful job of transferring that humid, dreamy atmosphere to film.
There is a danger that because the film is so delicate it may float away, but the soundtrack keeps it anchored; in particular, the use of Heart songs throughout the Lux and Trip love affair.
Kathleen Turner is great as Mrs. Lisbon, making her human and making the audience feel for her even as she puts her four daughters in lockdown.
Kirsten Dunst, of whom I am a fan, is pitch-perfect as Lux, struggling with womanhood in the stifling atmosphere of the Lisbon household. I think it is best expressed when Lux conducts various affairs on the roof. She rebels even though she is virtually tied to the house. Kirsten Dunst pulls it off with a subtlety one can also see in films like Interview with the Vampire and Marie Antoinette, another film by Sofia Coppola.
This film is definitely worth seeing over and over again. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars The Virgin Suicides.......2007-06-10

I read the book about two months before I saw the movie. I read the book over and over again, asking the same question that the confused teenaged boys did in the story: Why? Now, they never figured it out, and did not intend to, seeing as how the fantasy of the five sisters was more important than the questions of reality. However, unlike the neighborhood boys, I thought I'd missed something. A word, a phrase, a motif that went unnoticed. I figured out that I hadn't missed anything, and was partially put off by the fact that I couldn't find a concrete explanation.

After seeing this film, I understand a little more than I did when reading the book. Ms. Coppola takes direction of an already concrete literary work, and changes perspective so that the things that cannot be explained are at least felt in some manner. The book focuses on the boys perspective ( which is the fantasy focus of the book)just enough to make readers wonder more about the girls. Sofia, shifts that just enough, not to lose the dreamy fantasy quality, but to layer it on top of the reality. We understand and feel the boys' desire becoming something that resembles a dream/fantasy, but we also get into the girls' minds just enough to take the edge off of the desire to know why. We are in the room with all five of them as they listen on the telephone trying to reach out to a world that they've been snatched out of ( in the book, we get more of a view of the condition of the lawn, the fact that no one leaves to go to the store, but has grocery delivered, etc.). We see the sun rise and set as the days go by, knowing that the sisters can only watch from a window. Those small moments, that feed the story from a different angle, make this movie great. Its delicately crafted direction and touch of feminine perspective makes the movie something you can watch without fear of another book-turned-movie catastrophe.

4 out of 5 stars A bit obscure..........2007-05-10

Though the book was a best-seller, I'm not sure why. It seems the theme of the book and the movie made based on it is a bit obscure. Of course, that could just be the genius of Mr. Eugenides. I enjoyed the book much more than the movie, though I say that about most "based on the novel by _____" books. It is more or less about the growing rates of suicide among teenagers, especially teenage girls, and the reactions of people in small communities. I believe it is more about the people surrounding the girls than the girls themselves, but we obviously cannot discredit the importance the message the girls are trying to convey about living in a strict household and being cut off from society. I believe it is a statement about physical alienation as it is alienation within the mundane "everydayness" the neighborhood they live in portrays. I gave the movie a 4, though I give the book a 5. I think Jeffrey Eugenides is giving us an important message, but many of us dont know where to look...

2 out of 5 stars I Didn't Get It.......2007-04-10

My wife recommended this movie one night, so we watched it together. She had seen it a few times before and really enjoyed it. Me.. well, I didn't get it. The movie revolves around the adolescent lust a couple of boys have for these sisters. The sisters' mother is a religious freak and when one of the sisters commits suicide, the already whacked mother gets even worst and eventually puts the remaining sisters in lockdown. meaning, she takes them out of school, burns all their rock records, and basically cuts off what very little social lives they had. Eventually, they all make good on the title and off themselves.

Now, while the acting in the movie is great, which is why I gave it 2 stars, I think the story is really lacking. My biggest complaint is there is 5 sisters. We get to know the 2 youngest, 'cecilia' and kirsten dunst character 'lux,' but the other 3 sisters are just kinda there. So really, why should anyone care if they're dead or alive? They don't really add anything to the story. We also see 'cecilia's' ghost on a few occassions. Why? I don't know. Seemed unnecessary to me. In my opinion, in good story telling, if you show it, you should use it. For example, in an action/adventure movie, if a character shows a gun, that character should use that gun or what would be the point in showing it to begin with. Same here, only with 'cecilia's' ghost. It served no purpose. The other thing I didn't understand was why the girls commit suicide and why they invited the boys over as they were doing it. Made no sense at all.

While I'm very much aware that Hollywood takes liberties often with source material, I think this story could have been MUCH better. It didn't need 5 sisters. All it needed was 2. It'd been much more interesting to watch Kirsten Dunst's character morning the loss of 'Cecilia,' perhaps being haunted by her memory and maybe causing her to have a strained relationship with her parents, boyfriend, and friends, ultimately ending in her own suicide than what The Virgin Suicides gives us. So, I cannot recommend this movie as it's a total waste of screentime.

My family and i enjoy watching Kirsten Dunst movies, we think shes a terrific actress. We enjoyed the plot of sisters sticking together. Thank you the movie was in excellent condition..

Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan (Scream), James Duval (Nowhere), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!) star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema. The DVD includes cast information, a theatrical trailer, and French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars I love this film.......2007-05-16

I must first admit that I picked up this film because James Duval is a total stud, but it turned out to be a really good and interesting film.

4 out of 5 stars good cult flick.......2007-05-16

This was a good film although a bit disturbing with the nature of the actors in the movie. I did enjoy the somewhat constant "fear" of the main character being caught and the loss of innocense.

4 out of 5 stars Yup, its a crazy one allright........2007-03-24

Yeah, I saw this movie when it came out NC-17. Yeah, I was like 17, I was disturbed, it was a cold February night downtown, my key broke off in my door and I had to pay a tow truck driver to tow me 55 mile home. The part with Perry at the counter and Skinny Puppy in the warehouse will live with me forever, as that night that I originally saw it will. It is simply a good example of nouveau avant garde filmaking. Kind of experimental. There were many art house films in the early to mid ninties that would definitly make your stomach turn, but that was the beauty of these movies, the total, unmistakable catharsis.

4 out of 5 stars loved it!.......2006-11-07

If you are a fan of Gregg Arraki, watch this movie! Roce McGowan and James Duval did a great job. Not to be watched by those that can't expand their minds beyond the box...

John Turturro plays a humorless engineer who uncharacteristically takes a brief break from his life to find the source of his only happy childhood memory. When that fails to materialize, he offers a ride to a benign, buckskin-attired kook (Sam Rockwell) and soon gets much deeper into the young fellow's unhinged life than he ever intended. Director Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion) makes a good case that Turturro's character is getting what he needs (a lot of loosening up) versus what he wants (everything on his terms). Ironically, the film can't make the same claim, tightly bound as it is to conventional and rather bland storytelling form. One keeps wanting something cinematically thrilling to happen, but the project is too rigid for that. Having said that, however, even if this isn't a great film, it is an awfully pleasant one. With Catherine Keener, Lisa Blount, and a cameo by Dermot Mulroney. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-06-13

One of my favorites, since buying it several years ago, I still like to watch it again and again.

This is one of my favorite movies, when I want to watch a fun movie where I'll feel good about people without fairytale sappiness, this is what I grab from my stash of DVDs. Al and Kid are wonderful opposite types who remain themselves throughout the movie, yet add to each other through the friendship that they form. The feelings of camaraderie are portrayed well with a freshness that comes right through the screen and I end up taking life a little less seriously after watching it.

5 out of 5 stars what a pick-me-up.......2007-03-03

In 1997 I happened upon this movie on latenight cable by accident while channel surfing, and as the end credits ran I found myself thinking, This is one of the best movies ever! Why haven't I heard of it?? It sure gave me something that I didn't have before I saw it, that still remains with me to this day. There is a special kind of warm and life-affirming feeling that I came away with, and I said I've got to buy this movie. John Turturro and Sam Rockwell are perfect for the characters they play, and they become the characters. Sam in this character is the man! If you are a fan of the Coen brothers' movies, perhaps, or just a well-rounded and open-minded movie watcher, don't miss out!!
One thing I forgot to mention: Sam Rockwell should be one of the 3 large faces and names on the cover, Dermot Mulroney is out of place there as he plays the part of a minor character with very little screen time.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL FUNNY MOVIE.......2006-12-10

Being a wilderness recluse myself I can really appreciate this movie. It is wonderful, funny and beautiful. The scenery and acting is great. Turturro is at his best here, and Sam Rockwell is perfect for the part of the eccentric "kid". This is in my "favorite" collection that I watch often, along with "Total Eclipse" of another eccentric anti-establishment kid. "Al Fountain" is an obsessive-compulsive who lets down his hair from the influence of "kid" and the blending of the two is psychology par excellence.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm off the grid, man!".......2006-03-24

I'm only writing this review because I noticed that no one else has bothered to praise this film in about five years. It is a wonderful film. No, it didn't win any important awards, didn't make a billion dollars at the box office, and didn't star any tabloid-worthy, of-the-moment celebrities. What it does have is a subtle yet compelling story of hope and self-discovery populated with full, rich characters that are the kind of people we all secretly pray will find their way into our lives, but so rarely do, and fill it with meaning in a sorry world that is otherwise devoid of honest feeling and emotion. With all the sham and drudgery in everyday life, isn't it worth a couple of hours of your time and a few bucks to get out of the grave you've dug for yourself and feel what it's like to live life rather than just tolerate it.

4 out of 5 stars My review of Box of Moonlight.......2006-01-19

I just happened to be channel surfing and came upon this movie. I was pulled in by it. I had never heard of Sam Rockwell before this movie and I found him to be so refreshing! John Turturro as the middle aged man going through a mid life crisis really works, he played the part so well. Sam Rockwell and Turturro had a great chemistry in this movie. You find yourself pulling for Sam Rockwell's character and hoping he finds the friend he wants and needs and he does with Turturro! I would recommend this movie for sure. It is one of those make you feel good movies. I also wanted to see more of Sam Rockwell after this, his other movies.. Matchstick Men and Confessions of a Dangerous mind were great too!

5 out of 5 stars Another Oldie But Goodie.......2007-07-07

Oh my WORD! I cannot believe that the '80s is now the oldies. (Let me stop before I start feeling old).
Back to the movie, I'm in TOTAL agreement about with the first reviewer about not drinking anything. If it doesn't come out of your nose, it will come out elsewhere.
I laughed mu bumper off BIG TIME seeing this flick. I'm SO going to buy this! I loved the Fat Boys beboxing (a sound that few rappers make with their mouth). This time I'll bebox right along with them.
I love the '80s for many reasons, but this is one of the best parts of the '80s; this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Los Chicos Gordos.......2007-03-14

If you like laughing, smiling, or smirking out loud...this is definitely the motion picture for you. And if you don't like any of the above, why then you should take a good hard look at the "Man in a Mirror" as Michael Jackson pointed out, and think about both changing your ways and--let me be clear--if you want to make the world a better place, I recommend taking a look at yourself and making a change. Sha-na-na-na-na-na.

The Fat Boys burst onto the screen, like a modern day Marx Brothers, and let's be fair...the Marx Brothers were not human beat machines. They had the funny lookin' fella with the moustache and the simple one who can't talk. And one of them was Hispanic. But The Fat Boys are triple threats: they can rhyme, they can act like a mutha, and they are--in my opinion--also obese.

This film centers around their struggles with obesity that is at once poignant and utterly charming. Is it nature or nurture that had led the Fat Boys to their life of high caloric intake and whimsical slapsticking? The director of Disorderlies does not back down from this tough, polarizing question, and by the end of the film be prepared for your preconceived notions and your funny bone to be rocked to the fat core.

My only criticism of this otherwise hilarious thinking-man's (or woman's, or fat man's) dramedy is that it bears a striking resemblance to the Anthony Minghella film, "The English Patient." Why was one recognized by the Oscars and Disorderlies not even nominated? Some may say racism, and others might opine that it's weightism. I say it's both. Which is a shame because it means there will never ever be a man or woman of color who gets an Academy Award, ever!

Smarten up, people. It's not the 90s anymore!

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny!!!!!.......2007-02-10

I saw this movie the first time it came out, and I was only five years old. It is so hilarious. My favorite scene is when Buffy is trying to give the old man CPR, and Buffy starts yelling MOUTH to MOUTH!!!! I laughed my tail off!!! Buffy passed away in 1995, and he is missed. This film is a must have!!!! I can't believe that this film came out twenty years ago!!!!!

This has been a favorite for a number of years, However living in New Zealand I could not find it anywhere so a few weeks ago i searched it on Amazon.
This movie is funny, quirky and is definately a good watch.
It revolves around 3 bumbling guys "aka the fat boys" who get picked to look after a desperate son's 'ailing' father. After a business deal gone wrong the son needs money fast and the dollar signs take over. In all there stubbling and bumbling they find a break thru that gives the father a new lease on life much to the son's despair. This is a great family movie, and is a far cry from the smut and dirty language that is taking over movies in the last few years.

I had a really hard time staying focused on the movie. I wanted to like it, I'm not hard to entertain but I kept finding my mind drifting off to everything under the sun. I'm sure, maybe, if I can get myself to sit down and try to watch it again, I'll find something to like about it. I doubt I'll actually be able to work up the desire to give it that second chance though.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay...but just OK.......2007-02-11

This wasn't a movie that I loved. Alex Dimitriades, as Ari, is sexy and he's got some acting chops. By the end of the movie, I was completely in line with his father in wanting him to get a job and stop being so pathetic. His whining and self-indulgent behavior was so typical of many people who still live at home and claim they have no freedom. I think that's why the character becomes so pitiable at the end because he doesn't realize that part of his misery is self-induced and has nothing to do with oppressive parents, his emerging sexuality, or racism, of which he readily takes part in when it comes to other nationalities. It's because he doesn't know what life is or how to live it. He's mad at everyone but the person he should be furious with--himself. Don't expect a feel good ending either because you won't get one.

What I liked about the movie was the portrayal of the Greek immigrants and their traditions; it was the most interesting thing about the movie. I also liked how the director refused to have Ari banging every hot guy in Australia. He doesn't even seem to know his own worth sexually; we all know he could score major hotties but HE doesn't seem to know that. How anyone could think any of the sex scenes (if you could call them that) are erotic is beyond me.

The movie, to me, seemed unfinished and not because it didn't have a happy ending. I just felt there was something missing. You're left feeling as adrift as Ari does. But maybe that's the point. It's worth renting but I doubt it'll be a movie you love.

2 out of 5 stars Head On - Apply Directly to Forehead.......2007-01-17

Turns out I got this one by mistake - I meant to get "Head-On" (and oh what a difference a little dash can make). D'oh! But I might have seen this film eventually - after all, another gay coming of age movie, "C.R.A.Z.Y.", is one of my favorites. Alas, this movie will not be joining that one on my "favorite films" list.

You know, one thing I usually love about movies is that they take us to places we'd never get to go otherwise. But this one took me to all kinds of places I never would have chosen to go voluntarily.

And don't get me wrong - it's pretty well done. It's an unblinking depiction of separation - separation of generations, of language, gender and culture (gay/straight, Greek/Australian, etc.). And Ari, self-destructive to his core, lashes out (and in) because he is trapped between all of these divides (chasms, even). There is actually a very artful scene illustrating the literal wall between his furtive hookup in an alley and a traditional Greek street-market (between the bazaar and the bizarre, if you will).

However, despite deft touches like these, this film is ultimately too bleak for me to recommend. But in fact, this movie's very intention might be to leave you a little queasy. If you like other well made yet disturbing films (The Accused comes to mind, although that one is better acted), you might like this one. But be prepared for a pretty rough ride.

    5 out of 5 stars A Dark, Provocative Film.......2006-05-14

Based on the novel LOADED by Christos Tsiolkas, HEAD ON, directed by Ana Kokkinos, is a dark, provocative film about a young man's (Ari played by Alex Dimitriades) search for who is is and his coming to terms ultimately with his sexuality. He and his traditional Greek family live in Melbourne, Australia. He is expected to get a job, support himself and get married. Much of the conflict in the movie is between him and his father and his father's wishes for him. Alex's best friend is Johnny, a card player by day and a transvestite by night; unlike Ari, however, he knows who he is. The movie opens with a traditional Greek wedding. One senses immediately Ari's alienation from all the happy heterosexual festivities as he quickly leaves the happy event. The film alternates footage in black and white of scenes from the past of Ari's parents and other Greeks who have fought for freedom and the present shot in color. The physically attractive Ari is a not an altogether sympathetic character as he has no interest in finding work, both deals and does drugs and is in constant battles with his parents. On the other hand, he is loving and gentle to both his sister and his friend Johnny. (There is a poignant scene where he and Johnny are forced to strip while he watches helplessly as police officers beat his friend. Ari ultimately decides that he does not want to change the world but will be a "sailor and a whore."

The movie contains violent scenes as well as erotic, explicit sex between men. (The critics of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN who describe the sex is that film as graphic should see this one.) Alhough dark and provocative, HEAD ON is an honest account of one man's search for his true identity, something that most of us can relate to in one way or another.

5 out of 5 stars Confronting Look At Racial And Sexual Culture Clashes In Suburban Melbourne.......2006-03-21

"Head On", caused quite a controversy when it was first released, not only because of its stark and explicit presentation of its sensitive subject matter but also because of the non sentimental way it's story was told. It really was ahead of its time in some respects with its use of language, nudity and an "in your face" theme that contrasted so much with the majority of main stream Hollywood attempts in the same area. Dealing with the dual issues of growing up Greek and gay within the framework of a traditional Greek family and suburb in Melbourne, Australia, the film is a fascinating pot purri of culture clash, confusion of sexual identity, and the dilemma of following "tradition", as opposed to following one's own heart. Blessed with terrific performances headed by the outstanding Alex Dimitriades in the lead, "Head On", manages the rare feat of bringing all these multiple themes together in this one engrossing story of a young man's search for love and identity in the often confusing world he lives in.

While "Head On", with its raw approach to an at times sensitive subject matter would definately not be to everyone's taste I find it a riverting piece of movie making. Considering its low budget and largely inexperienced director at that time the film is amazing in dealing with the many issues it does in the time frame of one day. Facing life as a teenager is never easy but also being gay and growing up within a very traditional Greek family culture makes for a very real identity crisis which is handled uncompromisingly in "Head On". Visually it is probably one of the strongest and mos tvivid gay themed films that has enjoyed a general release yet, and as a snapshot of gay life in the eighties in the western suburbs of Melbourne it is a not to be missed viewing experience. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Blazingly Bleak Tale of Desire Vs Self Loathing.......2005-09-10

Heads up to HEADS ON: this is a story of the agonies of isolation self-induced by a tragically sexually confused young man. Few directors have the courage to write and present the truly dark side of sexuality and Ana Kokkinos deserves a tremendous amount of respect for daring to go where this film takes us.

Ari (Alex Dimitriades) is a handsome, sensual young Greek man living with his proud parents and sister in Australia. They are part of a Greek conclave that holds to old country traditions: every male must marry a Greek girl and 'then he can do anything he wants' according to Ari's mother. Ari is gay but cannot fully accept his lifestyle, preferring to have dangerous sexual assignations in the filthy alleys of his city. He pals around with Johnny/Toula (Paul Capsis), his transsexual cousin, but avoids contact with him in public. Ari avoids life's realities (he has no job, he is financially dependent on his parents, he cannot relate to his father's demands for his life, etc) through extensive use of drugs and macho confrontations. His life is in a downhill spiral from which he is unable to escape. He attempts a heterosexual encounter but fails miserably. Even when the possibility of a real gay relationship is offered by handsome and masculine Sean (Julian Garner) he is unable to cope and destroys that blink of salvage. Ari's only devotion seems to be to his sister and his mother, neither of whom can extend a long enough arm to pull him from his quicksand life. Ari simply cannot cope with who he truly is.

The acting in this fine film is excellent. The camera work by Jaems Grant is both artistically creative and successful in capturing the atmosphere of the story. Scenes that are edgy are handled with realism but never falter into the sensationalism range. Both Alex Demetriades and Paul Capsis give extraordinary portrayals of very tough roles. This is not a film for the squeamish, but it is a fine portrait of gay life in Australia and especially in the Greek community there. Grady Harp, September 05

5 out of 5 stars Karen Arthur directs another winner.......2007-03-31

This is a satisfying, informative, and well-made family story directed by Karen Arthur. Filmed on location in a serene New England coastal town complete with lighthouses, cranberry bogs, and sailboats, this is an easy-moving yet edgy story of family relationships. It exposes viewers to the poignant behaviors and coping styles used by adults and children who have a very common "invisible disability" which touches one in seven of us.
Kirk Douglas'character Mike dotes on grandson Danny, yet Mike's own son Patrick (Bruce Boxleitner), in turn, shows a nearly embarrassing level of contempt for his father. Why? It all revolves around the Secret. But once the Secret is out and Mike understands its profound impact on his grandson and himself, what to do? How Mike stands tall to resolve this inner struggle with the help of family and friends makes us feel proud and good.

3 out of 5 stars The other Secret.......2007-02-17

I "mis-clicked" and ordered this movie when I meant to buy the one about the Law of Attraction. This is -not- that DVD.

It was a nice movie though. It showed two possible approaches to handling a child's disability, in this case dyslexia.

My daughter has a learning disability similar to dyslexia. Instead of words arriving at her brain in incorrect order, they leave her hand in incorrect order. For example, she could memorize a list of spelling words and recite them perfectly, but she could not write them down. Even copying from the board to a piece of paper was torture.

In her case there was no stigma associated with it. We did everything possible to improve her abilities and teach her skills to deal with it. She is now a third year college student studying architecture.

I have seen children, though, whose parents do not want them "labeled" so they refuse to acknowledge the situation. Instead the kids grow up thinking they aren't as smart as their friends, and the teachers consider them "trouble makers" or "lazy". The labels are still there, they are just more painful.

I recommend this movie to all the parents out there that refuse to help their LD children.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-11

The movie was extremely moving and touching. I recommend this movie to people in the helping services field of work as well for a possible teaching tool for people with disabilities. A much check out!!

When I heard that one of my favorite B movies from the 80's was coming out on DVD I was happy!! I ordered this DVD from MEDIA BLASTERS / GUILTY PLEASURES (known as RAREFLIX on EBAY) for a reasonable price. After quick delivery I anxiously put the disc in to watch!
Well.... first the good news. The old saying "Better to have something than nothing" is true. The Bad News? To start the source print is less than spectacular. The film is dirty, grainy at times. Multiple splices throughout disc. Full Screen transfer, no widescreen. Extras include 4 trailers from other films. There is a 'promotional' trailer of "Texas Lightning" on disc which is nothing more than the montage of scenes from the film's end made up as a teaser trailer.
Also to squash any rumors that might be floating about regarding the 'MAUREEN MCCORMICK NUDE SCENES', Uh.. They don't exist. At least not in this DVD version. Yes she does have a fling in a motel with one of the central characters but nothing more. I do recommend the VHS tape from MEDIA HOME VIDEO if you can locate it. Their transfer was from a better quality 35mm print. However if you are dying to see this film and do order the DVD, don't say I didn't warn you.

First off the production values are off the chart. The video looks to have been shot with a 3 chip or maybe 35mm. The lighting is consistent. The interviews are insightful and interesting. There are a couple of unfamily appropriate moments involving the import models doing some dancing, but would still be pg13 fare. Very nice interview with Sasha Singleton that makes her appear meaner than she probably is. Only downside would be the last 15 minutes ending with the focus on the guy with the Cavalier. Doesn't have much racing action or car show scenes outside of what seems be the same Hot Import Nights show, but tells a great story.

This has got to be the best dvd i have seen regarding the import tuning world out there. And i have seen my share of dvd,s regarding this subject as i have been into the whole import scene for over 4 years now.Alot of dvds out there are nothing more than fluff pieces, never really dwelling inside the import scene like R Generation does. This dvd goes into how the import scene got started, what makes it tick, and what makes us tuners spend the insane amout of money we sink into our cars.I thought i spent alot, some of the guys in this dvd are insane, sometimes spending upward to 30,000 dollars into some of these cars.Alot of these guys are regular joes like you and me who have such a passion for this hobby that they spend more time with theyre cars than theyre own families. Its really interesting to hear them talk about what drives them to modify theyre car to the extent that they do.R Generation also has interviews with some of the icons of the import world like RJ de Vera and such. And also interviews with some of the import models who make a living modeling at some shows such as Hot import night, import showoff, etc. It also looks at the car clubs who are like families that take part in this sport.I highly recommend this dvd to anyone who is into the import scene.R generation is the best look into the tuner world to come out in a long time.

Superior to both Kids and Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is a snarling satire that has the emotional range to prompt rage, fear, laughter, and grief in a viewer. Three L.A.-based, almost-twentysomethings--an incredibly foul-mouthed Valley Girl (Rose McGowan), her puppyish boyfriend (James Duval), and a sexy bad boy (Johnathon Schaech)--take to the road after a series of comic collisions with skinheads and gun-toting convenience-store clerks. While secret lawmen and voyeuristic TV cameras follow their movements, the fugitives gradually warm up to a three-way sexual relationship that wraps them in a profound, renewing innocence--an innocence then stolen by a wrathful America. Araki skewers the usual villains: the media, homophobes, gun nuts, Gen-X stereotypes. But there is so much more at stake here than meets the eye, an extraordinary anger and fear about predatory intolerance and purposelessness about the young. The DVD release includes the original theatrical trailer and production notes. --Tom Keogh
