The amazing Animal Kingdom...............2005-01-22

Great Journeys is an entertaining look at migration patterns of a large number of animal species. It is also a revelation of sorts exploring the inner workings of how and why these migrations take place. Along with the information on the massive distances covered by these animals, the viewer is also shown hunting and mating practices of several species and their habits for survival.

The narration for the feature is quite well done and the DVD offers an alternate option of a music & ambience track if you'd prefer just music and picture. The video presentation is attractive with good clarity and color. At only 60 minutes long, each chapter is somewhat encapsulated but enough information is given to still offer a worthwhile production. If you're an animal lover, you'll probably end up wishing this was much longer, as I did. There is really no bonus features to speak of aside from a couple of trailers of other documentaries.

All in all, Reader's Digest has done an admirable job in their examination of nature and the animal kingdom. One can only hope that there will be more productions like this one. If you're a fan of this type of material, I'd recommend taking a look at this feature.

The miracle of life in the animal world............2005-01-22

Great Milestones is an exploration into the breeding habits and mating rituals of various types of animals. Interesting aspects of this subject are how the Moon and tides regulate and synchronize certain elements of breeding and how weather conditions also play a part. Not only are land animals studied, but some types of undersea creatures are shown as well.

In the latter half of this documentary, parents protecting and feeding their newborns is touched upon. Finishing up is a look at the young animals leaving the home or nest in the struggle to join the circle of life.

At only 60 minutes long, this feature may leave you wishing for more. The sound, narration, and video are quite well done in my opinion. No bonus features are offered except for a couple of trailers from other programs. The chapters are a bit short due to the time limit but what is presented is entertaining and pleasant nonetheless. As diverse as the animal kingdom is, here's hoping that Reader's Digest will make more of these types of documentaries. If you're a fan of this type of subject matter, this is recommended viewing.
