During his wife's pregnancy, Gordon Churchwell went from apprehensive ambivalence to sympathetic vomiting. The experience inspired him to research the relationship between pregnancy and men's lives and to write a book on the subject. Here he humorously dramatizes his experience, interviews friends and experts, and wears an "empathy belly" for a day, all in the name of exploring the effects of a woman's pregnancy on the father-to-be. To keep with the structure of his book (first published as Expecting: One Man's Uncensored Memoir of Pregnancy and later as Pregnant Man: How Nature Makes Fathers out of Men), Churchwell and his wife sometimes act as though she is currently pregnant, while other times acknowledge that this event actually occurred three years prior--making for some awkward transitions. To make his experience more universal, Churchwell incorporates the experiences of other men, which results in a lot of joshing at the group's Manhattan diner (the same one frequented by the Seinfeld quartet) and some touching moments during the obstetrician visit of one friend and the delivery of another friend's baby. Churchwell does a fine job of balancing science, sincerity, and sly wit, making for an informational and entertaining 49 minutes. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Tongue in cheek French fable.......2006-03-06

Very charming gentle little movie. Clever well-written plot set in 1970s working class Paris examines the impact of the environment on human reproduction; the media and marketing; theological questions; women's lib; the physical aspects of pregancy plus it has two beautiful leads-Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. The set colors and Ms. Deneuve amazing color coordinated wardrobe is reminscent of another early Demy movie-the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Very perceptive take on how males would differ if they gave birth-a French politician calls for free, 24 hour day child care facilities, universal health insurance and even taking care of senior citizens. Male maternity fashions are a hoot!

4 out of 5 stars Although it's a poor French comedy..........2005-07-03

I like it because it's so silly. I also waited for this DVD release for so many years because the theme song "L'evenement Le Plus Important Depuis Que L'homme A Marche Sur La Lune" by Mireille Mathieu is a great song, but it's never released on any of her CDs. I hope that the film and soundtrack will be remastered.

1 out of 5 stars A career low point for all parties concerned........2005-07-01

I saw this movie around 20 years ago and it was easily the worst movie Deneuve, Mastrionni, or Demy ever did. It's excruciating to watch.

2 out of 5 stars Okay.......2004-06-29

This movie was not that funny. Mainly the did not show his belly as much as they should have. The movie is dry for modern times.
