Mastering the alphabet involves much more than recognizing capital letters. Brainy Baby: ABC's offers a healthy dose of phonics and lowercase letter study as well, treating 2- to 5-year-olds to a lesson that proves equally entertaining and educational. The key to this delightful show's appeal stems from an engaging, interactive approach to learning. Vocally introducing each uppercase and lowercase letter pair, sharing each letter's sound (or sounds, as in the case of vowels and certain consonants), and showing examples of words beginning with each letter, a friendly narrator encourages viewers to repeat what they see and hear. Throughout the 40-minute program, playful review sessions help enforce each lesson. Upbeat music and exceptional camera work add to the package, making yet another positive contribution from the award-winning Brainy Baby Company. Favorite extras on the DVD version include a video sing-along and a read-along storybook narrated by a child. -- Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT EDUCATIONAL DVD.......2007-04-15

I am so thankful to these reviews. They help so much in determining if a product is right for us. After reading all the reviews, I decided to purchase this DVD for our 20 month old son. He had been watching The Letter Factory (which is great) and I wanted to offer him something new. At first, I was worried, as he wanted to watch The Letter Factory, but after sitting through the DVD with him ONCE, from then on, he has been very interested in watching the video. I like it because it's not all hyper. It's taught in a relaxed calm method. No regrets. I LOVE the way they repeat over and over the sounds of the letters. It's an excellent video for learnig the alphabet and letter sounds. A++++ We bought ours directly from Brainy Baby. We didn't want to wait. We received our order within a week.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning tool.......2007-01-25

If your gonna let your kids watch TV atleast let it be educational. It's a great video. I'm sure it reinforced my son in learning his ABC's.

5 out of 5 stars Great ABC Video.......2007-01-04

My 2 1/2 y.o. loves this video and asks for it often. He now knows all his letters and I believe this video has really helped.

4 out of 5 stars May not be perfect, but my [...] is finally learning to talk........2006-08-25

I agree with most of the other reviewers regarding MOM OF MANY MUNCHKINS review. She was way too critical! For hating the dvd so much, she has it memorized. She is correct about the "uh" sound, but my son has started talking so much since we got this dvd from our local library. He has even started saying complete sentances! Brainy Baby may not be perfect, but they are obviously doing something right. He also watches it from beginning to end without getting bored, and even giggles when the babies giggle. It is very cute! I think they did a great job. We have to remember that this video was made for babies and toddlers, not grown up adults.

4 out of 5 stars My TWO year old knows his letters, but he's learning the sounds wrong!!.......2006-04-06

This review was very difficult for me to write as I have mixed feelings toward the video. As a first grade teacher, I am very critical of anything that requires the very particular and accurate use of phonemic awareness. Unfortunately, as the mom in the last review pointed out, this video has many inconsistencies when the narrator and little girl say their letter sounds. First of all, when saying letter sounds, one NEVER wants to add the sound -uh after any letter!! For example, when saying the sound for "T" we don't say "TUH", we simply whisper it by dropping our tougue from the roof to the bottom of our mouth. Or, we say "W" not by saying "WUH" but by forming the W with our lips, then holding the W sound like wwwwww. Though most of the sounds in this video are correct, they occasionally slip into the "-uh" trap! How on earth are our children supposed to read if they add -uh to every consonant....tell me....for instance, what the heck is puh-a-tuh! (translation without the -uh and you get the word "pat"!)
Now, looking beyond the inconsistencies in pronounciation, I have to say that my 2 year old son LOVES the video!!! I am completely in awe and amazed that within one time of watching it, he repeats EVERY letter as it drops onto the screen. Though I find it terribly repetitive and boring, he is COMPLETELY engrossed!! And you know, HE IS the one who is supposed to love the video (not me!) so I suppose Brainy Baby has hit the mark on that aspect! He sits through the seven minute introduction and is totally aware as each written letter comes on. He enjoys the kids and babies on the screen and it doesn't seem to bother him that there is no real "action" or fun puppets like they have in the Baby Einstein videos. So, as a mother, I am overjoyed that he is enjoying the video, learning his letters AND gaining a nice vocabulary. He is slightly speech delayed, so anything that will help to improve his language awareness is a blessing.

So how do I rate this?? As a teacher, probably no more than a 3. As a mother, I'd have to give this a 5 since my own child is rapidly developing his language awareness just by watching a simple DVD! I haven't watched any other letters video, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

4 out of 5 stars great instant classic.......2007-03-30

this is a movie from my childhood. not a great movie for little kids but i fell in love instantly. When i bought the dvd after not seeing it in years, the story line was still good but the make-up and effects weren't as good but hey it was a movie made in the '80s so for the time they did pretty good. my kids when they watched it these days thought it was funny but a little scary.
But they are used all the high tech movies.

5 out of 5 stars 80's was the best for movies.......2007-01-15

This is at least on the top 10 greatest horror movies in the 80's

3 out of 5 stars Good cheap thrills, especially for younger viewers.......2006-09-07

Like so many products of the 80's, The Gate succeeds more on nostalgia than actual entertainment value. But that's not to say it isn't worth watching. In fact, it's probably one of the best films of its kind: Low-budget, mid-to-late 80's PG-13 horror with a then-unknown cast, and a generous amount of special effects.

What also strikes me about it, years later, is that the story itself more resembles an old-fashioned monster movie than a teen horror flick. I still get a kick out of watching the basic plot (kids inadvertently unlock a gateway to another dimension, unleashing demonic critters) tick by like clockwork. And it's all fairly inoffensive, though there are still a handful of decent scares.

Even without the nostalgia factor, I think this is a fine kid's horror film. Great for a Saturday matinee or a Halloween marathon paired with TREMORS or Fred Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD (for which a DVD release is long overdue).

5 out of 5 stars classic schlocky horror.......2006-01-21

before i even get into my glowing review of this cult classic horror film,i want to call a long overdue moratorium on the long winded, synopsis-heavy reviews, people read these to glean opinions and REVIEWS of the film from like minded genre fans, the brief, succinct synopsis that amazon provides is enough to allow the reader to decide if he wants to check out the film, the poorly written synopses are useless, time consuming, and they take up space. you didn't write the film, so chill out with the play by play, please. anyway, that having been said, this is pure, cheesy, schlocky 80's horror, all the elements are there: bad special effects that elicit instant laughs, a dorky horror freak best friend(who bears a resemblance to paul from the wonder years), a saucy older sister with even saucier friends, and a young, baby faced stephen dorff looking scared and perplexed for most of the film, a far cry from his cocky, arrogant, james dean/vampire turn as deacon frost in 1998's Blade. the final sequence, with the giant demon rising from the hole, is actually pretty impressive, at least for a film made in that era. worth buying. the dark poet

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, awful DVD.......2005-05-07

First of all: I LOVE this movie.

Now let's go to the DVD edition:

AWFUL 1:33 aspect ratio, grainy picture, shaddy and tons of compression blocks.

Extras: trailer (ok) and a cheap still gallery. Very poor, I know it's too much asking for a 'Making Of' for a movie like this, but....

Sound: English Stereo. No Subtitles in ANY language. VERY POOR.

The best thing of this DVD is the cover. Nothing else.

Conclusion: If you are and horror fanatic, and you like this movie, search for a german edition under a collection called 'Extreme'. It has a remastered picture, original Widescreen ratio and dolby english sound 2.0 track. Pretty good edition, it only lacks of extras and subtitles.

This one sucks, I only give3 stars 'cause this movie ROCKS. But this DVD is truly, truly cheap and dissapointing.

5 out of 5 stars Most Creative & Interesting Video I've Seen.......2004-06-01

As a parent of two wanabe Atlanta Braves, this is the most creative instructional video/DVD I've seen. My kids and I watch this over and over again not getting enough and then we go outside and practice some of those great soft toss drills in the video. When you see this DVD, you will realize that money doeasn't buy happiness. Creativity and time with your children make us all wealthy. In addition to those great soft toss drills, "Tennis Racquet Home Run Derby" and "Bubble Baseball" for the little guys are great. Besides the creativity, the tips on the type of bat to chose and breaking in one's new glove should be part of all Lamaze Classes. Love the spray paint idea on the knob of the bat to identify it is yours. We did this and it is the next best thing to having a Lojack in your bat. If your household eats, drinks and sleeps baseball you will want this for now and forever. And this is a great gift from a grandparent like ours. You will be "safe at home" with "Backyard Baseball Drills". Thanks Coach Schupak!

5 out of 5 stars Best of The Best For Youth BaseballInstruction.......2004-04-18

An old Chinese proverb states, "if you can touch it, it is real."
This high quality baseball instructional DVD is one of the most real things you'll want to get if: 1) You love baseball 2) You have kids that love baseball 3) You love to spend time with your kids. Creative drills and instruction are plentiful. I was reluctant to try some of the drills, but now my kids won't stop playing "Tennis racquet home run derby". Great tips on equipment purchases. Learnt that smaller baseball gloves are better than larger ones. Real nice hitting drills and great stuff for the youngest of baseball fans. If you don't think that baseball is still our National past time, get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2003-11-09

I've bought coach Schupak's other instructional sports videos and thought he couldn't top those. This is the best product I've seen as a parent and youth coach. The creativity is beyond belief. Baseball made fun in your own backyard is what this is all about. Using stuff gathering dust in your garage to help your boy or girl into a .500 hitter! The greatest lesson taught here is that you don't need a lot of money to invent different ideas for practical use. Using a ten dollar tarp instead of a two hundred dollar net as well as a messy yet fun bunting drill with eggs. Don't sell anything on e bay or have a garage sale until you see Schupak's "Backyard Baseball Drills". Baseball and softball is made fun again without paying $5.75 for a hot dog to watch those overpaid cry babies. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Smart Drills and Fun Drills.......2002-04-07

My kids love using the drills in this video. I was upset I had not thought of many of these myself! Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very good video, use the drills without spending money!.......2002-01-26

This video was so good for me. My son enjoy so many of the drill. He will sometimes ask me to go outside with him to practice "hitting the bubbles" or play the high-low game. I didn't spent anything and I used the drills with most thingthat I have in my house. For low price and the high quality, I recommend this video to parents of children that play Little League.

loves this dvd. she'll stand at the tv and laugh, point, makes animal noises. ect.

2 out of 5 stars Brainy Baby - Animals.......2007-02-22

This did not seem like a Brainy Baby DVD. My 13mos old son loves Brainy Baby with the classical music and the cute babies, he loves to comment on the babies and point to teh screen. If you want a DVD with just shots of animals then this is proabably a good movie to get, there were lots of anuimals. But if you're looknig for a good Brainy Baby type DVD, I wouldn't suggest this one.

5 out of 5 stars The next step up after Baby Einstein..........2005-04-17

I decided to order a copy of this DVD when my son was still under a year. It was definitely too advanced for him then, but now at 20 months this is BY FAR his favorite movie. He watches most of the DVD which includes little kids/babies in the intro, Old MacDonalds Farm, an ABC of animals, and sections on different kinds of animal (furry faced animals, animals with fins and flippers, etc. etc.). He has even started answering some of the questions (what animal makes this sound, etc.)--so it's a bit more interactive for him.

This is a great DVD to add when your child is getting too old for the Baby Einstein videos because it offers a lot more information. For example, it gives solid information such as "Did you know a cow has 4 stomachs?" and goes over the names of baby animals and groups of animals.

This definitely gets 5 stars from my son (and me) these days!!

5 out of 5 stars Real, interesting animals.......2005-01-23

My 17-month old son is bored with all the Baby Einstein videos, but he is delighted with this. It's a good mix of animals he recognizes and new or exotic animals. He especially likes the "fins and flippers." I love the real animals and the music is great too. SOME DVDs are ok for infants and toddlers, but bore older preschoolers. This one's good for kids 3-5 too, so big sisters and brothers won't mind sharing the TV as much!

5 out of 5 stars Great for animal lovers.......2004-09-14

My son has been watching this since 12 months old and loves it! The DVD is one hour long and is very educational and fun. Excellent real footage of many different animals.

I am a father of a young football player. Before I bought this dvd, I would say my sons skill level was equal to Charlie Frye or Treant Dilfer possibly Kosar. Anyways you get the picture a very bad quarterback! Since he is learning from players from Different NFL teams and a hall of fame coach(Parcells) he has learned about cutting down on the fumbles like Ernest Byner. His interceptions have gone down considerably unlike Brian Sipes career. I don't know how well he will learn to ride a motorcycle in the future, but I am sure that a trained chimp can do it better than Kellen Winslow! Thanks Tuna! Go Cowboys!

5 out of 5 stars Its about time.......2005-11-28

I got one for my son's birthday. Finally I get to watch my husband having fun with the kids. Our 10 year old especially loves football and looks forward to their short training sessions together. Plus the players are so "cool". My husband has a great time because he finally has something to do with them and the kids love having his attention! It's just really great to see them having so much fun together. My sister is returning the video game she got for her kid for Christmas and is buying one of these. Thanks for giving us the choice.

2 out of 5 stars just my opinion.......2007-06-25

Previous review gives excellent listing detail on what to expect in terms of projects and tips.
I bought the dvd set sadly to get a recipe for the scrumptous looking drink and dessert pictured on the cover. It's nowhere to be found in either of the 2 dvds.
Overall, as an intermediate level do it yourselfer and crafter i am glad i did not pay full price for this Dvd.

I liked some of the projects eg, making a bag out of a beach towel, the showercurtain game and the sponge waterball, as well the tips on grilling.
Overall though some of the projects are alittle too "simple". For example, making "iced coffee" literally shows Martha pouring already made hot coffee into a cup of ice and adding suger and milk to taste...to me it was bordering absurd.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not her best.....................................2006-07-04

This is one of Martha's latest DVD's that she is presenting with a seasonal theme to it. It is good but not her best, mainly because it is being compared to her other DVD contents and offerings. The compilations are episodes from her previous TV show format "Martha Stewart Living". The problem is they are mostly from episodes taped within the past 6 years, therefore there is much missing from the early and middle years.

What is here is good, with Disc Two being the better of the set, because of the recipes. But I can recall many other summer episodes from the early and middle years that would have been welcomed. Also, this is a rather short offering of projects and decorating and recipes. I think the problem is that they wanted to keep it as up-to-date as possible, and rather than reach into the archives of a different time and place, they tried to stay within the episodes of the new millenium. The price is good, and so are some of the sections.

    Disc One:
BEACH PROJECTS: beach bags/ sarong tie dye/ flip flops/ sand castle sculptures and tools kits/ superhero cape towels

KIDS PROJECTS: lemonade stand/ toy sailboats and motor boats/ bean bag toss/ sponge ball/ pitching tents/ map and compass skills

PICNIC PROJECTS: picnic flatware roll/ striped picnic blanket/ hankerchief pitcher cover

OUTDOOR DECORATING: oilcloth place mats/ tablecloth weights/ citronella candle/ button napkins

CLELBRATE AMERICANA: fireworks apron/ red, white, and blue garland/ red, white, and blue tarts (which was quite good)/ patriotic votives

    Disc Two:
BBQ FAVORITES: ribs and sauces/ chicken, ribs, and macaroni salad/ leg of lamb and grilled veggies

GRILLING: asado sausages/ grilling seafood/ grilled fennel and onions/ charcoal vs. gas grills/ grill tools

SIDE DISHES: corn-on-the-cob/ pink gazpacho/ potato salad/ corn relish

REFRSHING DRINKS: iced tea/ iced coffee/ papaya lime cooler/ southern drinks

DESSERTS: sand dollar cookies/ summer berry cobbler/ ice cream brownie bars/ bananas foster

You will find things to do, and make, on your own or with family and friends. The sand sculpture section would be great with kids. Enjoy the summer compliments of Martha.

2 out of 5 stars a good subject, but sloppy handling.......2007-04-15

If you are not initiate to the world of backyard wrestling, this might be a good place to start, if you want to see something of the pure drive and horrors of this trend. Just like pick-up games in the dirt, youth in all corners of America are making their own wrestling federations, with of course no training outside of watching television and having a love for the game. You may say that backyard wrestling is far more dangerous than any kind of baseball or football game in the mud (especially when barbed wire and flaming tables are into play), and you wouldn't have too much of an argument from me, but the question here is how in-depth and revealing and objective this documentary is.

This film delivers a good range of proto-wrestlers, from The Lizard, who does aspire to be a proper professional wrestler (and puts his money where his mouth is and actually auditions for a WWE Tough Enough and goes to a wrestling school), to kids throwing each other on thumbtacks and slicing their own foreheads for a handful of fellow kids in their yards. Some seem like angry kids who would rather find ways to cut themselves open, and others seem totally lost and have no idea that they are working towards one day being fed through a tube. Some of them even show how their performances channel them through great pain in their lives--Scar, for example, was a sickly kid who went through mutliple surgeries when he was just a small child, and hardcore wrestling seems to give him a place to take control of his body, which was taken away from him for so many years. One boy plays out his history of abuse through his wrestling storylines, to somehow master the pain he has been put through. These are intriguing looks into some of the drives for what seems on the surface a horrifying youth trend.

But what drags me away from this movie are the thinly disguised manipulations on the moviemakers' part. When two brothers reveal to their grandmother the extent of their matches, it is clearly a moment set up for the camera, and so loses any appeal of seeing any true reaction from the grandmother. When a boy decides to arrange a match with a fellow kid who goes by the name of The Retarded Butcher, the Butcher's mom 'suddenly' shows up, again a clear arrangement by the moviemakers. Even Rob Van Dam's brief appearances in the film feel like obligatory 'counterpoint' and not a full examination of the sport vs. the backyard shindigs.

Ultimately, _The Backyard_ falls short of trusting the subject matter and has too many rough edges, and unfortunately they are not the rough edges that might cut open a scalp or two.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT DOCUMENTARY ABOUT BACKYARD WRESTLING.......2005-01-25

THIS INSIGHTFUL DOCUMENTARY SHOWS THE RECKLESSNESS THAT MANY YOUNG WRESTLING FANS PUT THEMSELVES THROUGH IN THE WORLD OF BACKYARD WRESTLING. WHILE BACKYARD WRESTLING IS ENTERTAINING, IT'S ALSO UNNECESSARILY DANGEROUS AND IT ALSO GETS TOO MANY PEOPLE HURT. THIS DOCUMENTARY IS THE FIRST TIME I GOT TO SEE ANYTHING DEALING WITH BACKYARD WRESTLING. AND AS THE FILM SAYS, IF YOU WANNA BE A WRESTLER, YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH A TRAINING SCHOOL, THERE'S JUST NO WAY AROUND THAT. ALTHOUGH IT WAS A MOVING PIECE OF FILM, IT COULD'VE AND SHOULD'VE BEEN A LITTLE LONGER. BUT ANYWAY, IT'S GOOD FOR WRESTLING FANS TO WATCH. FOR A GREAT DOUBLE FEATURE, GET THIS WITH ''BEYOND THE MAT''. INCLUDES SPECIAL APPEARANCES BY ROB VAN DAM.

    5 out of 5 stars 5 Star Backyard.......2004-08-09

I absolutely loved this DVD. It shows how much some of these teenagers really want to become profesional. I also really hope the Lizard makes WWE. I reccomend this to anyone! Just makee sure a stupid idiotic nagging cousin isn't near you while your watching it.

    4 out of 5 stars Enlighting documentary.......2004-04-11

I have always been a wrestling fan, and when I was younger, my friends and I would often stage video-taped "matches" in our backyards and basements. We weren't pros, but at least we were aware of that fact. Nor did we brutalize ourselves the way the kids featured in this documentary do. I think the film maker did a supurb job with showing these kids and what they do without using a judgemental slant, which could have been very easy to do. The film documents various backyard "wrestling" leagues. I think the saddest story is that of two brothers who violently torcher one another in their matches as an outlet for the pain of abuse they suffered when they were younger. Also featured is a 17 year old wannabe promoter who couldn't care less who gets hurt in his events. He comes off as heartless and power hungry in this film. Other leagues are featured, including some talented, although foolish boys in England. Their fun is stopped when a bystander calls an amulance when they see the blood of a kid who thought it would look cool to "blade" himself during a match (taking a razor blade and cutting a small nick in the forehead, producing just enough blood flow to look pretty nasty) The only group that seems to come out looking good in this film is a group of college kids in upstate New York that focus on working together and being safe. (In other words, they aren't cutting each other up, setting each other on fire, nor performing dangerously high risk maneuvers)

The film primarily follows a 26 year old who uses the stage name "the lizard" in his quest to become a real professional wrestler. When he finally makes it a legitimate pro wrestling school, the film shows quite a few shots of them doing strength training and physical conditioning; thats what will save your body in the ring.

I only give this video 4 stars and not 3 because of a special feature entitled "wresling Superstar", in which a professional wrestler talks in length about how to become a pro wrestler, the importance of a good education and following your dreams, and the foolishness of the brutality many of these backyard "wrestlers" put themselves through. I think any parent who's child participates in backyard wrestling should watch this film, know whether or not their children are putting their bodies at risk, and watch the "wrestling superstar" featurette.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a watch but be warned..........2004-04-03

I consider myself to be a HUGE wrestling fan. However I have been raised on the WWF/WWE, I never really got into ECW all that much. I am much more into moves and storytelling and talent than that of the pure violence and bloodshed that is the Backyard Werstling set.

This movie tries to follow a few backyarders around and sort of explain to an uninformed public the "meaning" for what they do. Many think it is going to lead to a shot in a major league of the WWF...I have news for you boys (and girls) Vince doesn't recruit his guys like this.

Basically it a bunch of boys that idolize wrestling, that's all fine and good, but they are untrained individuals that are executing violent moves on either solid ground or homemade rings that can cause even more damage.

Wanting to be a wrestler is cool, but the message is lost when you see these guys abusing themselves and each other with items like light bulbs, barbed wire, glass, thumbtacks or god forbid the occasional use of lighter fluid to set objects or each other on FIRE!. All this done in front of HUGE crowds sometimes as small as 4 people. While the WWF can be critized for many things, they are never this blanantly brutal. The WWF has always been about the show...not the violence.

Most of the story focuses on a hopeful 26 year old guy named The Lizard, that dreams of entering the WWE. It's quite evident that after seeing him on camera, we as viewers know that will never happen. He lacks carisma and has such a bad command of the English language that it's laughable. His gimmick is horrible and he's skinny as all hell.

For all the wantabes in this thing, that dream of being a professional wrestler, nothing is ever said about working out, and getting in shape. AND LEARNING THE CRAFT. If they are fans they obviously don't see that Triple H, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, have done a lot more than smash their high school buddies in the head with Flourcent light tubes.

Even Rob Van Dam mentions on this video that no matter what you need to go professionally trained, however this is never brought up to many of the kids. The Lizard, he knows he has to go, but he's older and wiser than the rest of these guys.

I think this video really explains it all when during the very first segment on 2 brothers that have a match vs. each other goes very wrong. Instead of landing on his back and shoulders, this guy gets dumped right on the back of his head and neck...OUCH! It is the furthest thing from professional wrestling you can get. This video makes me feel bad that I watch wrestling, becuse to people that don't know any better, they think it's all like this.

I'll take my WWE over this crap anyday. I don't agree with the movie, but it's worth it to see kids destroying their bodies before they finish puberty.

Leave this stuff to the professionals...Watch Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar from No Way Out 2004! or any match with Kurt Angle! That's profesional wrestling.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good focused practice with an exceptional instructor.......2006-09-20

This is the fourth volume in Erich Schiffmann's Backyard Series, and it is labeled as being for intermediates. Although the DVD itself does not have a chapter menu, on the back of the DVD case, Erich lists the chapters as follows: Opening #4--Half Salutes--Triangle--High Lunge--Dog--Bent Knee Side Stretch--Twisting Bent Knee--Low Lunge--Cobra Vinyasa--Pigeon Cycle--Double Pigeon--Locust--Cobra--Bow--Cobra from Cat--Cobra from Dog--Hero Pose--Reclining Hero--Camel Pose--Half Dog--Bridge Pose I, II, III--Wheel Pose--Knee to Chest Abdominals--Twisting Reclining Leg Stretches--Reclining Sage Twist--Relaxation Pose.

Surprisingly, I actually tried the DVD because I don't really enjoy backbends; I was hoping that Erich's master instruction would make these postures more accessible to me. I was certainly correct in assuming that Erich would make sure I was thoroughly warmed up before leading me into challenging backbends such as camel and wheel pose. His opening series starts with general stretches, including shoulder-opening work (which is also integrated throughout the practice). He continues the basic opening process by moving slowly and methodically through half salutes, a few standing postures, and various flows from dog pose. The initial backbends are extremely gentle and include cobra, bow, and locust. Erich then stretches the body further with full reclined Hero's pose (which I couldn't do) before moving on to the first more demanding backbend, camel. He had a unique way of getting into this pose which involved revolving one arm forward and then behind the body, but I actually found this to make the pose more difficult for me. After a half dog shoulder stretch, Erich continues the backbending with several variations of bridge pose. He offered yet another novel approach here, this time to help you keep your shoulders down: he has you roll your knees first to one side, then to the other, rolling each shoulder under in turn--this really worked! However, I found that once we got to wheel pose (which is repeated THREE times at increasingly difficult levels), my legs were so pre-exhausted by the practice up until this point--which has seemed deceptively gentle--and so I was not able to hold wheel nearly as long as Erich. Therefore, I was extremely grateful that Erich moved on to stretches next. He does a reclined leg series here plus some really unique reclined twists which felt absolutely wonderful! A short savasana follows, bringing in the entire practice at around 85 minutes.

By the end of this DVD, I felt nice and stretched, with my back and shoulders in particular feeling nice and open. Unfortunately, however, this practice did not serve to increase my love for backbends, and the things I liked about it are not incentive enough for me to purchase the DVD (I tried it on loan). I should clearly state that I do not blame Erich for this; I think certain inflexibilities in my body just make backbending postures extremely difficult and even uncomfortable for me, and so I'm just not motivated to spend a lot of time working on these poses, even with Erich. But I expect that unlike me, most intermediate and even advanced yogis will love this practice, especially if they have back issues and/or enjoy working on backbending. Therefore, despite the fact that this DVD did not click with me, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.
