1975-1981:ROLLINGTHUNDER & THE GOSPEL YEARS (DYLAN,BOB)
Customer Reviews:
an amateur load of..........2007-06-01
I'm a huge Dylan fan and interested in all the different phases he has experimented with, but this DVD is poorly made, boring and filled with distracting cornball effects and edits. What's worse: NO DYLAN PERFORMANCES IN THE FILM!! This DVD should be titled "Some People Who Knew Dylan in the 70's: Dylan Impersonator Asks Mundane Questions!" What a huge bore, and the stinkiest thing I've ever bought on Amazon.
Spend 240 minutes listening to Dylan's cds instead!.......2007-05-19
I'm one of the biggest Dylan fans out there but this film is pretty poorly made. How anyone can sit through this entire dvd is beyond me. Cheesy effects galore! The same Rolling Thunder Review footage shown OVER AND OVER again! The WORST photos of Dylan in existence! Why is Rob Stoner wearing those STUPID sunglasses for his entire interview? He's INSIDE! Will someone PLEASE hand Hurricane Carter a towel so he can wipe the sweat from his brow? I've seen school plays that were more entertaining.
If you do decide to give it a go do yourself a favor and see if your library has it instead of throwing your money away. Then skim through the dvd to the semi-interesting parts...you'll be done in a half hour tops.
Why does Joel have to be so silly?.......2006-08-02
This documentary is mostly fascinating, yet is peppered with moments of silliness. For the die-hardenest of Dylan fans, especially his mid-70's transformation(s), you will absolutely love how the director/interviewer (and "star") delves deep into this interesting yet elusive period by asking all the questions that fans like myself have always wanted to ask. Fortunately, he is able to interview a few key former Dylan associates, asking very interesting questions.
It's not a hugely star-studded list of interviewees that most everyday music fans would recognize, but to the Dylan devotees, Joel Gilbert (the filmmaker) couldn't have asked for anyone better, especially the heart-and-soul of the Rolling Thunder Revue, Rob Stoner and Scarlet Rivera. They both were incredibly forthright and insightful and revealed much about the behind-the-scenes goings-on during the infamous Rolling Thunder Revue. Stoner especially was very articulate and generous with his recollection of those whirlwind events.
Hurricane Carter is very engrossing and a just a wonderful interview, and many others are also wonderful interview subjects. Myself, I was always a closet fan of the "Hard Rain" album, even with the sub-par recording quality. I played that album just as much as any other. The passion and intensity Dylan was exuding during that tour was spine-tingling (just listen to that version of "Idiot Wind"). If I had the money or the resources, I also would have made a film like this. So, hats off to Joel for pulling it off and beating me to it!
However, as much as I loved the purpose of Joel's documentary, I had a hard time sitting through all the terribly distracting "clip art" images intertwined with the captivating interviews. I wish he would issue a "Director's Cut" or something where all of that garbage is edited out, like the cartoons of the rubber duckies and Christ and crucifixes, and just about every other silly image that he uses. It takes away from, and almost makes fun of, what I feel is a very serious subject. Dylan wasn't writing songs about partying or sex, or acting stupid, he was a serious artist during this period, and sang about turning his life over to Christ, the deep darkness of love lost, the struggle of the falsely imprisoned, or gunned-down gangsters seen as modern folk heroes. This is all deep subject matter, and doesn't deserve to sliced up with silly amateurish clip-art images. A good 30-45 minutes in total is devoted to these distractions, and displayed during intriguing interview segments. I would pay fifty bucks for a version that omits all this silliness and keeps the cameras rolling on the interview subjects instead. Again, more importantly, this is only my opinion, and I would still strongly encourage Dylan fans to buy this DVD. To all you casual Dylan fans, I would stay away from it.
Passion Behind the Art.......2006-08-01
This is a long piece, but it really captures the essence of Bob Dylan's journey as an artist through this period of his life. If you ever wondered what made the man tick, or write that bit of poetry, watching this documentary will answer all those questions. There is a spirit in which art is made and genius seems to be able to harness it so very well. After watching this DVD, I have such tremendous respect for Bob Dylan as an artist because it was evident that his passion and conviction are at the core of his work. He was unafraid to stand up and bear the burdens of those treated unjustly.
My husband and I attended the Vineyard during this time period and we can attest that there were quite a few famous people who passed through. Our pastors were young men sold out to Jesus and were very integrous and sensitive to the spiritual hunger and growth of these people. At no time was their name exploited or their privacy not upheld. The focus was Jesus. While no one of us was perfect, we were all sincere seekers of God. I'm sure that Mr. Dylan was no different.
A friend at the Valley Vineyard Church turned us on to this DVD. He stumbled onto it quite by accident because he was interested in the life of Bob Dylan. To his surprise, his own pastor was in the film. Our Pastor Bill has never ever mentioned that he even participated in the making of this documentary. While there are those who might capitalize on a celebrity in the name of Christ, he chooses to capitalize solely on the name of Christ. Bob Dylan was just another soul drifting through on his way to heaven. Kenn Gulliksen and Bill Dwyer were used as instruments of the Lord to help him find the way.
If you want more and more Dylan,,,,,,.......2006-07-02
This disc covers a period that's somehow missed much attention.
There's excellent, in depth interviews, with people who all contributed to the music created, and tons of background information rarely mentioned before.
To be honest, I can't seem to get enough. For the most part, I've actually stopped buying new releases by new artists, and the only things I jump to buy are the Dylan tribute CD's which seem to come out weekly. When the songs are great, AND THEY ARE, the Dylan tribute CD's are way more interesting then whatever else is being promoted and sold.
And now we have this DVD, which, is for FANS who want more, and will get it, and appreciate it. Anybody who's met the Man, and is willing to say anything at all about him, I'm there, and all ears, because I think Bob is a true master/everyman, and I will never say "enough already",,,,,(I hope you can follow what I'm saying here, because, now that I'm reading it, I'm not sure I do.)
anyway,
if it's about Bob, I want to see and hear it,,,,,,
This is well worth the $13-14,,,,,,

REAL 50 fans gonna feel this..........2006-08-10
If you a REAL 50 fan you gonna love getting the inside story from 50 and interviews in this movie with his real family and friends, not no movie production hollywood version of 50's life. you get that mix tape - from the streets style - the real. for real just getting this movie for the soundtrack was worth it you get to hear REAL G-Unit street style flows on the soundtrack and it even got ricky ruckus on it. this buy was worth my time and $$$
pretty solid - good for the collection if u really like 50.......2006-07-16
This is a fairly solid movie. Obviously an independent - but it does reveal some new information and it is worth the money.
Now that 50 is coming out in a new movie this is a good one to ad to the collection.
B+
50 loved this - the negative posts on here are personal attacks and should be ignored.......2006-06-15
All the haters need to listen here. 50 and his crew loved this dope. If any of you guys in the sticks knew about hip hop you would have noticed that the g-unit music video "My Buddy" used a very similar animation and video style. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. Both that music vid and this movie reflect the real 50 Cent style. Love it or hate it - its real and its the truth. Thats why this style is now being used in all the new 50 videos as well as Eminem in his Mosh video.
All you haters need to break out of ya Top 40 mindset and dig the independent vibe and authentic flava.
So you girls quit ya namecallin and keep dreaming that you know sumtin bout flicks...cuz you DONT.
The reality is this flick has true 50 Cent FLAVOR. Animations are in the same style as g-unit and also same style as Eminem used in the political music video MOSH. Plenty of never before seen videos with 50, his gramps, and alot of other playas. Dig it.
The soundtrack is all independent artists - which I happen to think is cool since thats the way fiddy made it - on the streets. I watched this twice cuz I like it so much. I am a successful music producer in Detroit, I having worked with Em and plenty of other rappers, and I'm telling you some of artists on this movie are about to blow up.
Overall these filmmakers made a pretty good movie - even though its obviously independent and not big budget. It is an interesting and compelling documentary about life on the streets and how fiddy made it. There is alot of cool information (some stuff even I had never heard) - and like I said, the music and animations are fresh.
I give this movie the following ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Story: 5
Animations: 4
Music: 5
Editing: 4
Overall: 5
hope you all find this helpfuls. later,

You Should Refuse To Watch.......2006-06-03
I was channel surfing one night and I landed on 50 Cent: Refuse To Die. At first, I thought it was an authorized production but I quickly began to realize that something wasn't right. This so-called documentary is loaded with hip-hop jams but none of them are from Fitty or the G-Unit camp. Also, the majority of the film features some of the crappiest animation I have ever seen. There are informative interviews with Fitty's Grandfather, DMC, Treach, and DJ Skribble but the movie still has a generic feel to it. I was glued to the film like someone watching a train-wreck. I kept wondering why 50 even agreed to narrate this turd up until the credits started rolling. The voice of 50 Cent was provided by an imposter named Leviticus Richardson. He had me fooled, but boy was I pissed. Remember all the bogus 2-Pac cds that hit the streets after he died? Several wannabes had copied Pac's flow to the max and we were bombarded with Mackaveli pts 2 to 92. Remember the Bruce Lee imitators? This smells like the same doo-doo. I'm not even a fan of today's hip-hop but I would love to hear what 50 and company have to say about this. I was tricked but there is no need for you to get played. Avoid this urine stained comic-book and watch Cartoon Network instead.

Description
The Rolling Stones Just For The Record is a five-part documentary series commemorating the "Greatest Rock `n' Roll Band in the World." With hour-long segments chronicling each decade of their career, the Stones' legacy is presented in its entirety as never before.
Told by band members, fellow musicians, friends, family, biographers and fans, Just for the Record features over 50 exclusive interviews and takes us through 40 years of maximum rock `n' roll. From their backstreet beginnings in London to the 2002 Licks World Tour, experience the incredible life and times of rock's most prolific band.
Hear about the making of their greatest albums, see them on every major tour and best of all
get to know them in private.
Through success and failure, indulgence and tragedy, highs and lows, boom and bust - it's all here, a rock `n' roll odyssey of epic proportions.
Packed with rare concert footage, timeless recordings and historic interviews with the band, Just For The Record is the ultimate story of the Rolling Stones.
Disk 1
The 1960's were a coming of age for the Rolling Stones. Raised in the aftermath of World War II, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ian Stewart came together with one common interest - rhythm and blues music. They would share one common fate - success beyond their wildest dreams.
From the back-street pubs of London to the premiere concert halls of America, the 1960's watched the Stones grow from an R&B cover-band into the greatest rock `n' roll band in the world. But what took place during the first 8 years of the band's legacy is as dynamic as the era itself. From swinging London through the age of flower power, the Rolling Stones weathered a storm of change, and even served as a symbol for it. They tragically lost a founding member, yet nothing would keep them from redefining the sights and sounds of their generation. This is where it all began
Disk 2
The 1970's was a decade of extremes for the Rolling Stones. They rose to the height of their creative powers, spun downward under stardom's weight and then climbed back up again.
They were taxed into exile and spent much of the decade as rock `n' roll nomads, recording and performing what many believe to be the best music of their career.
It was during the "Me Decade" that they proved to be the "Greatest Rock `n' Roll Band in the World"
but not without a price. Drug problems, personal conflicts and overall disillusionment edged the band into disarray. But in the age of hot pants and bad politics; funk, punk and disco, the Stones bounced back never missing a beat. This is rock `n' roll at its best...
Disk 3
The 1980's proved to be the most trying decade the Rolling Stones ever faced. Amidst middle-age, creative conflicts, and solo projects, the Stones almost broke up for good. But the same tensions that nearly shattered the band would also reinvent them.
"If we made it through the 80's, we can go on forever"
Keith Richards
The Stones would go on to book-end the decade with two of the largest tours in rock `n' roll history while retaining their title as the greatest rock `n' roll band of all time.
In the era that saw both the fall of communism and the rise of MTV, the Rolling Stones proved to the entire world that rock `n' roll never really died, it just matured...
Disk 4
It was during the 1990's that the Rolling Stones proved once and for all that rock `n' roll has no boundaries or age limits.
Having survived the fallout of the 1980's, the Rolling Stones charged through the 1990's like Patton's 3rd Army, conquering new lands while liberating the eyes and ears of rock-starved fans around the world. And yet as the world changed around them, the spirit of their music remained true.
During the decade when both Keith and Mick became grandfathers, the Stones managed to complete 3 world tours amounting to over 300 shows, released 5 new records not counting solo projects; all the while remaining on the cutting edge. Not bad for a group of rockers in their 50's. Despite broken marriages, creative differences and even the departure of Bill Wyman, their search for the Holy Grail carried on. Nothing would deter the Stones from evolving through yet another prolific stage in their illustrious career. This is the band that knows no end...
Disk 5
Only one band has defined Sex, Drugs & Rock `n' Roll for 40 years. Only one band has truly stood the test of time, from their untamed, bluesy beginnings in swingin' London to the changing of the millennium 40 years later. Only one band can justly be called "The Greatest Rock `n' Roll Band in the World," and that one band is the Rolling Stones.
And now, in 2002, the Rolling Stones are celebrating their 40th Anniversary. With the release of their long-awaited 40 Licks compilation, the Stones have also embarked on a worldwide tour.
Follow the Rolling Stones on the road, from their first concert in Boston to their sold-out stadium show in Los Angeles. Hang out with the band, the fans, and the back-up musicians and experience the Rolling Stones again at their peak...
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2005-01-25
Stupidly, I bought this box set thinking that there must be something worthwhile for the Stones fan. I mean, five disks ought to contain something of some interest, right? Forget it. Buying this set was a major mistake. The interviews (apart from those with Mick Taylor and Anita Pallenburg) were amateurish; the footage was nothing to write home about; and, there was no Stones music whatsoever -just this irritating, bush-league, Keef-like riff (actually, there were two riffs, designed to sound like Honky Tonk Women and Brown Sugar) inserted at "opportune" moments (like when the band was playing). Forty clams down the drain. Hopefully, a used CD store will take it off my hands at a 75% haircut.
Unauthorized for a good reason: No songs, No performances!.......2004-04-25
Bogus and Unauthorized! I got both 5 VHS, and 5 DVDs.
I was only fooling myself. I watched the 5 VHS tapes, starting with the 1964 1st VHS. There are NO complete songs from the early 1960's era, NONE. I also could not find any studio or live performances by The Rolling Stones, NOTHING! Genuine original Rolling Stones LPs, EPs, CDs' and videos WILL have the Andy Warhol 'Tounge' logo, abkco, London, and/or DECCA registered Trademarks, (TM). This Unauthorized set of VHS, and DVD should be burned. I'd suggest 25X5, "Lets Spend The Night Together", plus the TNT/Tami show for the REAL Rolling Stones performances, authorized legitimate products. As an 'afficinado/fan' of the original 5 Rolling Stones + the 1969-tour 'Mick Taylor' 5 Rolling Stones, I rate this Unauthorized set as SBB, "Should Be Burned!" It's lacking in substance, like even an entire studio or live COMPLETE song track or video performance, no Rolling Stones content =Unauthorized. Don't purchase this item, you WILL be singing (I Can't Get No)'Satisfaction!' Buy the Volume 2 DECCA vinyl, it's GREAT!
Andrew A! 40 + year Rolling Stones 'fan.'
No music at all.......2004-04-11
This is not a music video - it is everything but ... As a documentary film which misses the product of the people whose life it is documenting, it is acceptable. If you want their music, don't buy it.
The authors had no rights to the music and had no cooperation from the Rolling Stones and it shows.
THIS SHOW ROCKS!!!!.......2003-12-20
I love the Stones, and this show is great! I've always dug the music but I never knew too much about how they started- but this show explained it all. Some of the writers on this show are really good documentary makers, I've seen their work before. I've read other complaints below, but you have to realize that this is an unauthorized show- YOU CAN'T PLAY THEIR MUSIC! This is the undercover history of the good and bad of the band from those that were there: the drugs, the fights, the songs! And I should know, I'm Fortunato Plethora!
Just for die hard fans!.......2003-11-21
This DVD-collection contains no music by the stones, no interviews of stones members, only their history illustrated by some footage. The only interesting thing about this is other artists talking about their experiences and feelings about the band we all love so much. But it's hardly worth the price.

Very disapointed.......2007-07-06
I wanted to see David Lee Roths videos ot the songs with Van Halen. His performing was the greatest. I've tried to get a DVD with his videos and can't find them. They were great. Tins
Not a single lick of van halen music ???.......2007-06-12
What kind of "early years" band documentary doesn't even have a lick of music from the band its covering ? A bad documentary you say ? Correct. This reminds me of something you would see in 1985 high school science class...projector and all. The narration is horrible, clearly from some old guy who had never heard of Van Halen prior to excepting the minimum wage job of "narrarator" for this C class documentary.
The box is way misleading. There are no interviews with anyone from the band. They play a few public recordings of Alex or Eddie saying something that you have heard before on VH1. And thats what this is, a bad VH1 documentary. The bulk of the interviews are from people like "Childhood friend of Alex" or "childhood friend of David Lee Roth".. also they interveiw some guys in totally unrelated bands that were influenced by Van Halen.
Do yourself a favor and don't spend $$$ on this. If they show it on Vh1 (bound to happen eventually), then you MIGHT want to watch parts of it...but if you spend money on this, you'll probably regret it like I do.
Dont pay attention to the hype by these other so called fans..........2007-05-17
I must say that this video is worth the cash. Totally!! If you don't want to purchase it then make a copy. Don't listen to any of these other so called fans. This video covers the inception of VH to the Roth departure. It even starts off with when the band members were born & traces their roots until they form Mammoth and then go from there. All of the people in this video are relevant to VH's history & have great things to say. Christ, Mark Stone is on the DVD as well as roadies, Zloz, Jim Dandy, band members from Snake and other music industry contributors that are associated with the band. If anyone like myself has any VH boots ( I have 20, from 1973-1984) and knows anything about this website: [...] you will be able to enjoy this video. Anyone who doesn't know about the boots is not a fan in my opinion. Just buy the video and you will be satisfied. There are plenty of rare still photos ranging from 1973-1978 for the club days. Lots of memorabilia shown on the video as well. Interviews with Dave Roth/EVH/Owner of Whiskey and voice recordings of Mikey & Alex as well as Gene S. Again this video will give you a nice perspective of how the band came about and what they went through to get to be "The Mighty VH!!!!!!" In a nutshell, JUST BUY IT for your VH collection, you cant go wrong. EVH-I hope your recovery is going well and we all hope to see you and Dave, Alex & Wolfie tour next summer of 2008!!! Long Live VH!!!
WB, what are you waiting for?????.......2007-04-12
OK, I get it now after all these years. WB (Warner Bro's) decided to hold all the early Van Halen footage in a vault hidden somewhere until the next life killing asteroid blasts the earth. Then evolution will recreate man and the new explorers will dig up the vault and find the vintage footage, watch it, and say, wow, what a cool band, lets sell this stuff on the black market. Thats about the time your gonna have to wait until you actually see a good DLR erra DVD, so, back to my 5th generation copied VHS to DVD US Festival from "83"........
Van Halen: Early Years.......2007-02-19
COMPLETE WASTE! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS DVD. Grade A piece of junk with ABSOLUTELY no early V.H. Footage. What a joke!

Not intended for WWF/E Die-hard Fans .......2007-05-22
I'll take a very different perspective on this. I have been in the business for more than 10 years now. This type of film is the "B" of the A/B perspective. It is NOT from or by the WWF/WWE. Nor is it intended for those fans.
It IS, however, a good look at the other end of the company. A wrestler is either happy with a company or they are not. EVERY company dumps on a few workers here and there. This is the dumped on worker's views. In all honesty; the truth of the matter is somewhere in-between this film and a few "history of" and "Story of" DVDs/VHS tapes that the WWF/E put out. It's good at the
<$6 point to see and understand the other side of things.
WATCH IT FOR YOUR SELF AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.
Good concept, not so good execution........2006-11-24
I thought the stock footage was lame that they used. THey do have some interesting interviews in it with Vince Russo and Tito Santana though and that is what redeems it. If I could go back, I would not buy this disk even for 5.99.
For stupid people only. .......2006-11-20
Okay I'll admit I did not see this cause I don't have too. It's just another example of lying documentaries like those of Michael Moore's.
Sure people will say I can't knock it cause I didn't see it, but any DVD with the headline of "We sit down with Vince Russo, the WWE writer responsible for shaping the personas of The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and others" tells me it is not worth my time cause it is in fact a lie. Vince Russo always tries to takes credit for things he never did and when he came to WCW it was proof that he had nothing to do with the success of the WWE. It is an insult to The Rock, Steve Austin, and wrestling fans in general to say he was what shaped the personas of The Rock and Steve Austin.
my WWE thoughts.......2006-10-27
Right Now WWE is struggling not against TNA but by themsleves this is my internet shoot on the wwe now.
WWE Has talent but they need more
first cancel the ECW it Horrible if heyman had control and not wwe writers of whoever and if it was like it was in the 1999 where it had its best year I think it would be so much better. They dont produce every match to be extreme in which that was the original ECW 24-7. Rob Van Dam,Sabu,Sandman are the only 3 used in a good way Tommy Dreamer is hardly used and its like old wwe guys are the top stars not the original extremits Hardcore Holly,Test.Bigshow. Bigshow in there is extremly disappointing wwe should have never seperated him & kane they should still be a tag team but they arent.CM Punk has probly had the best sucess in the new breed unleashed.WWE should end this embarassment and put these guys on Raw & Smackdown just divide them up.
Kurt Angle leaving was a huge loss to WWE hes maybe the best wrestler and him leaving is a huge TNA Gain and WWE Loss. I think he would probaly be better in WWE.
Tag teams where are they
Cade & Murdoch,Gymini,Highlanders,Viscera & Charlie Haas,Cryme Tyme,Spirit Squad thats it. WWE Should put together The Hardy Boyz,Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin,MNM,La Resistance Rene Dupree & Sylvian Grenierwho are both are suffering badly. Big show & Kane. Rey Mysterio & Chavo Guerrero should put a team together win the tag belts for eddie but instead they are riduclously fighting.
Bring Back
Brock Lesnar should go to Raw fued with Triple H,Shawn Michaels,John Cena,Randy orton, edge maybe smackdown Batista,Undertaker,Kane.Vince please bring this guy back.
Chris Jericho was one of the top wrestlers especially in 2005 HBK,Kurt Angle,Chris Benoit, eddie Guerrero,Y2J all were back bone stars they were fantastic wrestlers 2005 they had did great especially that year now sadly eddie passed away, jericho & angle left benoit & HBK should be WWE Leaders with Undertaker. Vince bring back Jericho if TNA gets hime this would be another huge loss.
Muhammed Hassan was a young guy who didnt get a chance I didnt like him but his charcter fit good a top heel had great matches with HBK,benoit.jericho,Undertaker, shelton Benjamin he should be brought back as a major heel.
these are some thought on wwe i have hopefully this gets attention
Basically a WWE documentary.......2006-10-18
this was alright for the money but what dissapointed me most was all of the footage was of the old AWA wrestling and they had no wwe and old days wwf footage but they gave a good description of the bret hart story and owen hart. Overall this was okay if you have 8 bucks to waste

This Documentary Had Nothing Of Any Use About Marilyn Manson To Offer.......2006-04-06
This documentary had nothing new or interesting of use even to a newfound Manson fan. Really these guys who made the music doc should have gotten more interested in their subject or not even made it. To say this film is unauthorized or even thorough is letting it off the hook.
The sound and video was alright on the DVD even though the editing could've been better. The interludes to the different sections of the movie were okay at least. Video was a 4:3 ratio on the DVD and it wasn't region-coded. It was mixed okay in stereo sound so all of those parts are worth mentioning. However, interviews were directed poorly and without leading as much enthusiasm or controversy as there should have been. The soundtrack music by W!ck was awful and over the top. The producers never even glossed over the local scene that influenced the beginning of Marilyn Manson in Florida.
Interviews were directed poorly and without leading as much enthusiasm or controversy as there should have been. No one had anything new to say or exciting to say about the band. It was closer to an infomercial than a documentary. Much better interviews could have been used. Especially one's that were commonly on networks that were at least somewhat interesting and enlightenning. Why didn't they use interview footage from "Bowling for Columbine" when they used a still from it? The editor could have cut all the garbage with the fanboy. He was annoying and didn't say anything that was worth hearing about Marilyn Manson.
It's a shame the discography and videography sections of the DVD are so good. Couldn't the filmmakers have been as interested in what was behind the music of Marilyn Manson?
A really great documentary on Marilyn Manson is "Demystifying the Devil". The researcher should've taken sources from that movie.
Definitely Worth The Money!.......2005-10-23
This dvd is so worth the money! I got it yesterday gor $13 and it rocks! It has great info on the bands early years. The interviews are awesome. It interviews Gidget Gein, Daisy Berkowits, Olivia Newton-Bundy and a lot more! There are also some great interviews with Marilyn Manson himself. This is a very recent dvd so it goes up to Lest We Forget unlike some other videos that aren't so recent. Overall this dvd is great!
Worst Manson DVD Ever.......2005-10-22
The only good thing on this dvd are the interview segments with Gidget Gein. This was the most boring DVD I have ever watched and I actually started to fall asleep the first time I ATTEMPTED to watch it.

There are better..........2007-01-22
If I had not seen any other video's on Johnny's life, this one would have held more interest, as it does a reasonable job of going through the details of his musical career. However, a lot of time is spent dwelling on his prescription drug problem, and the hotel room violence that he sometimes practiced on the road (undoubtedly largely due to the influence of the drugs plus the stress of the road life).
I had to ask myself if it was really necessary to do theatrical "mock-ups" of Johnny smashing a hole in a hotel room wall, or throwing a TV set out the window? Okay, so he did those things, but a lot of film time is wasted dramatizing these events that could have been spent on the more relevant parts of his life.
Just before watching this video, I watched the BBC TV production of "Johnny Cash - The Last Great American" and came away from that viewing inspired by the man, regardless of the weaknessess. "Unauthorized Life," by comparison, was a let-down. If I might compare just a few things between these two, which I'll refer to as LGA and UL:
1. LGA had more reviews from people who knew him (especially his daughter, Rosanne Cash), and other music contemporaries, such as Kris Kristofferson and Elvis Costello.
2. LGA had more details about Cash's identification with the underdog, such as the native Indians, and the prison inmates.
3. LGA had more snippets of concert footage.
4. LGA had more details about the last 10 or so years of Johnny's life, during the time that he worked with Rick Rubin...which is very interesting, especially Johnny's appearance at Johnny Depp's club, the Viper Room, which opened up before him a whole new audience of today's generation of youth.
On the other hand, UL did have some interesting details about Johnny's early life in the military, but other than that, I wouldn't have missed much by not seeing it.
I would say this: if you can get the BBC production "Last Great American", go for that one instead (although I could only find it on the torrent sites at the moment). Otherwise, you could get Unauthorized Life as a "second best" (or if you're a Johnny Cash fan who just has to have everything that was ever done about him) but just remember there are far better film biographies out there.
An honest, and real biography.......2006-02-18
I'm glad I didn't let any negative review sway me from getting this disc. While the A&E biography is a "feel good" story of this legend, this disc is much more honest in it's portrayal of Johhny. They don't hide the fact that he had two sides, & W.C. Holland, & brother Tommy Cash recall with great detail what a fully human being the Man in Black really was. The narrator is fine, & the re-enactments are minimal, and needed to tell the types true stories that these wild boys went through. It doesn't take anything away from the story. The disc doesn't focus on his music so much (as there's no full songs presented), as on the man he was. That's ok; I have enough of John's music to compensate for that. I love the guy even more now then before. No sugar coating; just like Johnny would've wanted it.
Quite horrible.......2006-01-25
This is the most horrible documentary I've ever watched. The narrator's tone is dreadful (sounds as if the DVD were made for children) and the re-enactments are torturous. There are some high points, snips of interviews from Johnny and others, but there is very little performance, beyond what I assume would be "fair use." Further, this DVD really doesn't add anything, nor does it shed any new light on Johnny Cash. The A&E Biography DVD is far more enriching.
Edit: I feel I really need to protect people from this product. First, many of the interviews are found on other products. Second, the packaging is painfully misleading. It suggests it has never-released concert footage of the Nixon concert. I couldn't find it apart from a few seconds of footage. Third, it's just plain boring. I've read the biographies, I'm not looking for a feel-good documentary, but I'm also not looking for a get-bored documentary. If you're just going to repeat what others have said, what's the point. If I could give it zero stars, I would.
A great product!.......2005-11-19
A really great biography with loads of info and dramatization of several events in Johnny's life. Good interviews with Fluke Holland, the drummer and Tommy Cash, the brother. For me, the most interesting parts are from the TV show 'This is Your Life'. It's a real MUST for a Cash-collector. You'll love it as I do.
