Product Description
Paramount's Adolph Zucker. MGM's Louis B. Mayer. Carl Laemmle of Universal. From Columbia to Warner Brothers, the studios that gave rise to Hollywood were all founded and run by Eastern European immigrants or first-generation American Jews. And in re-inventing themselves as Americans, they changed the image of the nation itself. Called "a lucid, inviting work of social history" (The New York Times), HOLLYWOODISM tells three dramatic stories: the rise of American film, the personal sagas of the men who shaped it, and the origins of the values that Hollywood embraces. Using never-before-seen home movies, extensive clips and interviews with everyone from Carl Laemmle to film critic Leonard Maltin, a groundbreaking portrait of Hollywood emerges. From the cinematic vision of America as a "dream dreamt by Jews who were fleeing a nightmare" to the anti-Semitic undertones of the House Un-American Committee hearings which shook the industry in the '50s, HOLLYWOODISM is a fearless, controversial look at "America's Dream Factory."

Surely even the French, with their legendary love of all things Jerry Lewis, will be sated by the Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection: Vol. 2, a three-disc package containing five comedy-musicals released on DVD for the first time. It would be a supreme stretch to call any of the five films in question (You're Never Too Young, Artists and Models, Living It Up, Pardners, and Hollywood or Bust) a classic, but then, anyone looking for challenging storylines and deep characterizations probably wouldn't be here in the first place. What the films offer instead are various breezy diversions, in the form of Martin, the suave, smooth talking cad and crooner; a parade of lovely young women (Dorothy Malone, Anita Ekberg, Janet Leigh, and Shirley MacLaine among them); some terrific musical numbers that are the highlights of their respective films; and, of course, the antics of Lewis, whose capacity for slapshtick and mugging is apparently inexhaustible. By this time (the mid-1950s), the two had already fit comfortably into their respective personae, with Lewis as the naïve, ingenuous rube and Martin right there to take advantage of him. In Artists and Models, Martin's aspiring painter cops ideas from the frenzied dreams of his comics-obsessed roommate (Lewis, natch) and creates a hit comic of his own, a simple story that's derailed by an absurd and unnecessary subplot involving the U.S. government and some enemy agents. Living It Up, adapted from an earlier musical called Nothing Sacred, finds Lewis cajoled by Martin, his doctor (talk about a stretch!), into pretending that he's suffering from radiation poisoning so they can both enjoy a lavish trip to New York courtesy of a newspaper trying to boost circulation by playing up the "dying" man's plight. Hollywood or Bust, a combination road picture and gentle spoof of the movie biz, casts Martin as a gambler and con man accompanying film fanatic Lewis on a trip to Tinseltown, while Pardners is a Wild West romp ("Jerry Lewis as a gunslinger" about sums it up) and You're Never Too Young puts Lewis totally in his element as he impersonates a 12-year-old boy in order to escape bad guy Raymond Burr. The plots are thin, at best, and the songs are hardly Oscar caliber. Still, the two stars have an undeniable chemistry, and the musical set pieces are highly entertaining, most notably a sort of pas de duh (sic) between Lewis and MacLaine in Artists and Models and an eye-popping, show-stopping dance number in Living It Up. In the end, it all basically comes down to one's capacity to endure Lewis' manic mannerisms (it's worth noting that by Hollywood or Bust, the pair's last collaboration, he's pretty thoroughly upstaged by a Great Dane). If even this cornucopia isn't sufficient, perhaps a move to France is in order. The set contains no bonus material. --Sam Graham

    Product Description

LIVING IT UP: The 1954 Martin-and-Lewis romp Living It Up is an amusing remake of the 1937 comedy classic Nothing Sacred. More specifically, it is the film version of the Broadway musical Hazel Flagg, which was based on Nothing Sacred. The heroine of the original undergoes a sex change to become feckless Homer Flagg (Jerry Lewis), who is led to believe that he's dying of radiation poisoning. Manhattan newspaperwoman Wally Cook (Janet Leigh), hoping to improve circulation of her paper, convinces her boss, Oliver Stone (Fred Clark), to fete Homer as a hero with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Homer learns from local doctor Steve (Dean Martin) that he isn't dying at all. But Steve talks Homer into taking advantage of the celebrity treatment bestowed on him by Wally, and a good time is had by all — until medical specialist Dr. Egelhofer (Sig Rumann) insists upon examining Homer. Highlights include a hilarious bit at Yankee Stadium, and an energetic jitterbug number featuring Jerry Lewis and Sheree North. The handful of songs retained from Hazel Flagg include "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York."
YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG: You're Never Too Young is a slapstick-with-songs remake of the 1944 Ray Milland/Ginger Rogers vehicle The Major and the Minor. Dean Martin plays the Milland part, while Ginger's shoes are filled by...Jerry Lewis? Lewis plays an apprentice barber who inadvertently crosses a homicidal jewel thief (Raymond Burr), and equally inadvertently hightails it out of town with the crook's jewels in his possession. Desperate to escape the crook's clutches, and lacking the necessary funds for a train ticket, Lewis disguises himself as a 12-year-old boy so he can travel half fare. He latches onto Dean, a music teacher heading for an all-girls school. After innumerable routines sparked by Lewis's adolescent disguise, the jewel thief catches up with him, leading to a rollicking climactic speedboat chase. Dean Martin has plenty of opportunities to serenade leading lady Diana Lynn (who'd played a supporting role in The Major and the Minor), while Jerry Lewis is in peak form doing his usual "waah-waah-waah" schtick. The original Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script for The Major and the Minor was reshaped into You're Never Too Young by future bestselling novelist Sidney Sheldon.
ARTISTS AND MODELS: Bearing very little relation to the 1937 Paramount musical of the same name, Artists and Models is a lavish, girl-filled vehicle for the popular team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Martin plays Rick Todd, a comic-book artist who is under fire from his publisher (Eddie Mayehoff), who complains that Rick's work isn't gory enough. Lewis plays Eugene Fullstack, Rick's roommate, who while asleep dreams up elaborate comic-book plots and garishly costumed superheroes. Eugene's nightmares help Rick become a success; meanwhile, our two heroes romance their luscious neighbors, artist Dorothy Malone and rambunctious model Shirley MacLaine (who during one song wrestles Eugene to the floor and sits on his chest!) Eugene's overworked imagination somehow attracts the attention of a group of Russian spies, who attempt to abduct Eugene during the annual Artists and Models Ball. Director Frank Tashlin uses Artists and Models as an excuse for some of the wildest sight-gags seen in a mid-1950s film. At one point, the director contrives to stuff a gag in Shirley MacLaine's mouth. Tashlin also exhibits his ongoing fascination with female breasts and legs by giving ample screen time to the natural attributes of co-stars Anita Ekberg and Zsa Zsa Gabor. One of the best of the Martin/Lewis efforts, Artists and Models suffers only from being about 20 minutes too long.
PARDNERS: This Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis romp is liberally based on the 1936 Bing Crosby film Rhythm on the Range. Set around 1910, the film stars Lewis as the pampered son of female tycoon Agnes Moorehead. Yearning to return to the Wild West where his father was a famed peacekeeper, Lewis purchases a prize bull, destined for the ranch inherited by rodeo star Dean Martin. It so happens that Martin and Lewis' late fathers were "pardners", so Martin takes it upon himself to protect Lewis from the various and sundry tough hombres in the region. Through a series of bizarre plot convolutions, Lewis gains a reputation as a rootin' tootin' gunslinger, and in his hubris he decides to round up a gang of outlaws headed by Jeff Morrow. As a result, he nearly gets himself blown to smitherines, but Martin shows up in the nick of time to rescue Lewis and help him capture the bad guys. Lori Nelson and Jackie Loughery supply the film's peripheral romantic angle. Pardners ends with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis turning to the camera and promising that they'll keep on making pictures for their faithful fans; ironically, the team was breaking up even while the cameras were turning.
HOLLYWOOD OR BUST: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their last joint film appearance in the girl-filled musical Hollywood or Bust. The thinnish plot finds inveterate film fan Jerry making a cross-country journey to Tinseltown for the purpose of meeting his favorite screen star, the buxom Anita Ekberg (the film's title, need it be added, has a double meaning). Dean goes along for the ride, hoping to expand his bankroll during a Las Vegas stopover. The boys are joined by a third traveller, an enormous Great Dane named Mr. Bascomb; along the way, the trio becomes a quartet when pretty Pat Crowley hitches a ride. The finale takes place in Hollywood, naturally, as Jerry wreaks havoc at a film studio which looks suspiciously like Paramount. All reports indicate that Hollywood and Bust was an unhappy shoot, with Jerry Lewis behaving so obstreperously that director Frank Tashlin ordered him off the set and told him to go home until he learned to behave himself; to this day, Lewis cannot bring himself to watch the film. Happily, the animosity between the two stars never comes across on screen, and as a result Hollywood or Bust is a most enjoyable diversion.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have for a Jerry Lewis's fan.......2007-07-07

A unique movie Collection of the funiest duo of all times: Martin & Lewis! There's just 1 movie missed: "The 3 Ring Circus" that I hope to get in DVD very soon!

    5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment.......2007-07-06

Finally the balance of the MARTIN/LEWIS films, well except for MONEY FROM HOME and THREE RING CIRCUS. What happened to them? Anyway, what is released is great. No wonder they were the top box office stars in the 50's. What a team. While the stories are not the greatest, the filming, acting, comedy works. These are films for the whole family that could still be enjoyed by us older folks who remember them in their prime. Seeing these films again brings back great memories of the "innocent" days of the movies. No chases, nudity, sex, drugs, foul language...just pure unadulturated fun. Don't miss volume one either. They are just as good. Volume two is a bit better (all in color) and they both are in top form. Especially wonderful is ARTISTS AND MODELS, LIVING IT UP and YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG. Great viewing for a rainy afternoon. BUY IT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Paramount for this collection!.......2007-07-04

If you are a fan of the comedy of Martin and Lewis then you should be proud to own this collection of their best movies! It comes at a right price that is affordable for everyone. My favorite is Living It Up! Hopefully we will see Three Ring Circus and Money From Home soon! First rate fun!

4 out of 5 stars The Madcap Millieu.......2007-06-28

It was considered rather odd when C.S. Lewis, in the already oddly titled, but very readable book, An Experiment in Criticism, suggested not that there were different kinds of books, but different kinds of readers. As regards Jerry Lewis films, I'd suggest that there are different sorts of viewers. Briefly that means one sort like his films and another sort don't. I count myself firmly in the former camp, considering him one of the all time great comic talents. Having said that, however, these films are nevertheless very much of their era.

For one thing, they take that era entirely for granted in a way that other comic films don't. Laurel and Hardy's last film, Utopia, although in black and white, seems yet far more universal than these Lewis/ Martin films. Why? A few reasons come to mind. The easiest thing for Hollywood to write about is Hollywood. In that sense, Hollywood or Bust is the strangest film in this set. Strange because it takes the adventurers so long to get there. Thus it fails both as a road trip picture and the standard "making it in Hollywood" faire. That said, there are many great comic moments, which brings up the next point.

These films were obviously meant to showcase the duo's immense talents. In that sense, they are never acting in a movie as much as the movie is unrolling around them. This sort of star power is virtually unknown today, but in the 'fifties, it could easily cross into various media: movies, TV variety shows (adapted from radio), Las Vegas stand up. The Colgate Comedy Hour, using a format adapted from radio, embroiled the dashing duo in surprisingly long and involved comic sketches. As was the case with The Carol Burnett Show, this comedy could also include pathos and be very moving.

The five films in this set, unlike the first volume, are all in color and all but "Living It Up" are in widescreen format. They date from 1954- 1956, often considered the best years of television, and a unique time in the history of the movies. In general, color didn't make things more realistic, but lighter in tone. Movies didn't have to be good, they just had to have big stars, and be big, splashy productions. For that reason top billing on these films is given to "VistaVision," Paramount's patented theatrical technique.

The only other thing that mattered was the director. For that reason it's often former cartoon director Frank Tashlin. Jerry easily pulls off gags likely first done by Bugs Bunny, but he's almost alone among live stars in that regard. The worst example is in Tashlin's The Glass Bottom Boat, where Doris Day is thrown pell mell into a futuristic kitchen gone wild, as has been done in countless cartoons, and makes it a thoroughly forgettable scene. Likewise, Paul Linde seems to get his drag scene in that film from a Bugs/ Daffy 'toon. Compare this film, with so many random slapstick schticks that Doris can't help be out of her element, with Move Over Darling, where she's entirely in it. Then again, the Norman Taurog directed Pardners in this set comes off extremely well because underlying the extemporaneous antics of Martin and Lewis is an strong story line enabling them to play off of any and all Hollywood wild-west stereotypes.

Arguably, one ought not probe too closely into films meant merely for fun, but watching these films now simply shows how much movies have changed. The main reason is that while these films were meant for the big screen and a Saturday afternoon laugh fest, escapist faire if you will, but packed to give the most bang for the buck, later movies, while launched in theaters, find most of their life on TV. For this reason, the fantasy element in films like Artists and Models seems merely unnerving, breaking what little there is of dramatic tension in the romance scenes. To a degree this is one with Shakespeare, who never let the audience forget, with a wink, that "the play's the thing" and for whom marriage was the sign of a happy ending. My main discovery in this visually dazzling and many- sided film was how well Shirley MacLaine could dance.

Film buffs will have endless comments on these films, and the eight films in volume one make it almost too full to review. That said, the packaging is somewhat puzzling, in that the films are presented in both volumes without extras or commentary. Why isn't there an insert booklet giving some background? At any rate, most of the Lewis and Martin/ Lewis films are at last on DVD, and for one kind of audience (including this reviewer), that's more than enough reason to rejoice.

5 out of 5 stars Two Masterpieces on Here, Unbeatable price.......2007-06-18

HOLLYWOOD OR BUST and (especially) ARTISTS AND MODELS are two of the greatest films of the 1950s. The director of both, Frank Tashlin, was the Hitchcock of lowbrow social satire. Both are at times visually and compositionally amazing.

The other three films are reasonable (at least LIVING IT UP), but Norman Taurog was pretty much a director-for-hire.

The tension between the two stars, for me at least, only makes these films more interesting, as it embodies the dissolution of post-classical Hollywood myth-making.

MiSTies rejoice! Three of the brilliantly cracked minds behind the Peabody Award-winning comedy program Mystery Science Theater 3000 have reunited for The Film Crew, a DVD-only series that provides a similar skewering to some uproariously bad B-movies. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy (the voice of MST3K's Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (who replaced Trace Beaulieu as Crow T. Robot) are the Film Crew--three affable guys who've been hired by a jovial yet clueless billionaire to provide "commentary" for atrocious films. Of course, the Crew's "commentary" is more cutting than informative, and for the most part, the guys' jabs are as smart and pop culture-savvy as the ones on MST3K, and it certainly helps that their target, a miserable 1968 slice of sexploitation starring a youthful Rue (The Golden Girls) McClanahan, is nothing short of atrocious. Parents should probably note that the gags are a little more "adult" than the ones on MST3K, but for the most part, this is harmless-- if hilarious--stuff. The disc's sole extra is an amusing poem by Corbett which extolls the virtues of lunch in verse. --Paul Gaita

    Description

Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett—three of the brilliantly insane minds behind the cult classic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000—finally reunite to unleash their warped sense of humor on the cinema of yesteryear as The Film Crew. Charged with the task of giving all movies their own commentary tracks, the Film Crew valiantly steps forward to tackle the best of the worst, starting with Hollywood After Dark.Rue McClanahan (Golden Girls) stars in this drama from 1968 as a young actress attempting to make her Hollywood debut, who falls into the seedy underworld of stripping when she's exploited by her unsavory producers.

    4 out of 5 stars MST3K fans rejoice!.......2007-07-08

Remember the TV show Mystery Science Theatre 3000? I do, I love that show. Seeing a man and two of his robot pals doing commentary on the worst movies made it a wonderful experience. Although I missed its run on Comedy Central, I did watch it a lot when it aired on the Sci-Fi channel. Normally I wouldn't waste my time with old low budget science fiction films; But when the Mystery Science Theatre crew provide the commentary, I can't resist. I stay glued to the TV listening and laughing at all the jokes. Thanks to Shout! Factory, us MST3K fans can rejoice and laugh some more. Three of the brilliantly cracked minds behind the Peabody Award-winning comedy program have reunited for The Film Crew: Hollywood After Dark, a DVD-only series that provides a similar skewering to some uproariously bad B-movies. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett join together once again to bring us excellent commentary. The Film Crew are three affable guys who've been hired by a jovial yet clueless billionaire to provide commentary tracks for atrocious films.

They're job is to provide commentary for old movies that don't have a commentary track already. Of course, they have to be really bad movies. This new DVD is definitely worth watching, because it's really funny. To our amazement, the Crew's "commentary" is more cutting than informative (surprising isn't it?). The Film Crew's first target is a miserable 1968 slice of sexploitation starring a youthful Rue (The Golden Girls) McClanahan (quite atrocious). The Film is called Hollywood After Dark (aka Walk the Angry Beach), and man is it a terrible film. It's one that I actually recommend staying away from. That is unless you want to ruin 74 minutes of your time. In the movie a young girl comes to Hollywood to try to break into the movies. Sadly she winds up being taken advantage of by sleazy producers and is forced to become a stripper. Parents and fans alike should take note that the gags in The Film Crew are a little more "adult" than the ones on MST3K.

Hollywood After Dark isn't very graphic in terms of violence or sexuality, but it does feature a handful of half naked females dancing around. For the most part, this is harmless if hilarious stuff. The strip teases are more funny than they are sexy. I had a nice time laughing at the movie itself. Hollywood After Dark is a comedy in its own right. The commentary provided by The Film Crew is very entertaining. While the movie itself isn't, the DVD is worth watching just for the funny commentary. That's the sole purpose for this release. You're not buying the Film Crew DVD for 'Hollywood After Dark', you're buying it for the Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett commentary. Hollywood After Dark is a cinematic train wreck that's loaded with terrible dialog and a cast of half naked strippers. The story loses itself somewhere and you're left wondering what the hell is going on. Much like MST3K, the Film Crew takes a much needed lunch break in the middle of the movie.

The Film Crew point out most of the movie's flaws, as if they weren't obvious enough. Hollywood After Dark suffers from a lack luster story and poor editing. All the quick cuts and lack of dialog in certain areas just make no sense. Without the hilarious commentary, this DVD wouldn't be worth mentioning. Since it is worth the price, I'm recommending this DVD for all MST3K fans out there. I do have one complaint however. The commentary track on the DVD is funny, but it lacks bonus material. The disc's only sole extra is an amusing poem by Corbett which extolls the virtues of lunch in verse. That's about it, I would have loved to see some behind the scenes stuff as well as a gag reel. More extras would have made this DVD better. Still, I do recommend adding it to your collection. Keep in mind that this is just the first of many reviews to come. Shout! Factor will be releasing more Film Crew DVDs for other movies that are begging for a commentary track.

If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasizes her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

You'll fall in love with WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, the hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock (SPEED, A TIME TO KILL). As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher -- MALICE). But when she saves his life after he's been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother (Bill Pullman -- INDEPENDENCE DAY) the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!

5 out of 5 stars Sandra and Bill..........2007-06-16

...what a great pair and what a fabulous movie. This is one of my faves of all time. It's funny, fun, and touches your heart. I am a huge Sandra Bullock fan since first seeing her in Speed and this made me a Bill Pullman fan as well. Previous to this movie he was always the guy who lost the girl, so seeing him as the male lead was a pleasant surprise.
    Great movie...get it!!

5 out of 5 stars sweet romantic comedy.......2007-05-25

This is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. Sandra Bullock is perfect in her role, and she has great chemistry with Bill Pullman. All the supporting cast is fabulous, from Peter Gallagher (perfect in his role as the superficial one of the two brothers) to the late always-hilarious Peter Boyle and reliable Jack Warden. Strong casting, an original storyline, great script, and perfect execution make for a highly enjoyable romantic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy, Love Story and overall Family Fun........2007-05-13

This movie shows that you are NOT crazy & you are not alone. Everyone has felt as if they don't fit in and "is it always going to be like this?" This film has several Titles. CLassic Family Fun & Comedy for anytime.

4 out of 5 stars Light and fun.......2007-03-10

This is one of my "watch again and again" movies. It always lifts my mood.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Romantic Comedy.......2007-03-08

I really liked the movie--in fact--I liked it so much that I saw it numerous times. It is one of those treasures that you want to keep in your collection to watch whenever you want. I liked the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in the movie. This movie is one of my favorites to see her in. It was funny and light. "While You Were Sleeping" was really enjoyable. It was not just Sandra who made this movie good and funny, it was the hillarious cast that kicked that humor up a bit more.

    Amazon.com essential video

This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of The Wizard of Oz, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series The Muppet Show. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on The Little Mermaid and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker

    5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhh Kermie!.......2007-07-06

What can I say? I loved this movie when it came out when I was a kid and I still do! My heart has always belonged to Kermit! I hadn't watched this movie for at least 20 years, so when it arrived I took it right out of the box and watched it. I was pleased to see that it still held up well. The songs were all still very singable and the humor was just what I remembered. And Kermit is just as wonderful as he ever was!

4 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories.......2007-02-12

Ah, something my children and I can watch together and not drive me insane.

This is the original muppet movie from 1979. I remember seeing it in the theater as a child. My kids like the singing, but get bored with the dialouge. But they are young (18 mo. & 32 mo.), so I am not suprised. I enjoy seeing all the big stars and comedians who took bit parts in this movie.

The only thing I don't like...most kids films with music/singing will have a bonus feature of the music scenes. It's a nice way to see the kids' favorite parts and only takes a few minutes if they want "just one more" show, song, story, etc. This DVD doesn't contain a music scene bonus feature.

Definately worth the money if you are a child from the 70s raising children today.

5 out of 5 stars First entire family enjoyable film........2006-07-17

The film which came out before I was even born! Is one that I enjoyed when I was growing up and also love to watch as an adult and will definitely share with my children one day! One day we'll find it, the rainbow connection that makes this film great for people of any age.

4 out of 5 stars DVD NOT "censored", but "The Muppets Go Hollywood" SHOULD'VE BEEN INCLUDED!.......2006-07-16

Let's clear up some confusion here....the "grasshopper" comment was on the movie soundtrack ONLY. It was NOT in the film. If you listen to the song "I hope that something better comes along" from the soundtrack recording, MOST of the dialog exchange between Rowlf and Kermit prior to the beginning of the song, is DIFFERENT than the movie (not just the "grasshopper" line). The different dialog on the soundtrack was to help make sense of the scene in which the song takes place, for those who hadn't seen the film.
I have an old VHS tape of The Muppet Movie from 1984, and the "grasshopper" line isn't on that either. Nothing was censored for the DVD.

I agree that the Muppets' 1979 TV special "The Muppets Go Hollywood" (which promoted the film's release), SHOULD have been included on this DVD. I'm deducting one star for that ridiculous omission.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever.......2006-04-24

This is only best movie ever made. I like all the Jim Hensons I've ever seen but those are nothing compared to this. I like the fact that Big Bird and Steve Martin were in this. It was funny, had oscar-winning rainbow connection and travels across the USA
A lot of people think Disney DVDs have few bonus features aren't very good ones. The only ones on here are Backstage Disney (which i dont watch) and pepe profiles. Pepe is so cool and I learned little known facts aboit kermit.

As the saying goes, Aaron Eckhart was born to play Nick Naylor, the 30-something "voice of Big Tobacco" in this brazen satire of corporate profits and what lobbyists will do to protect them. Right from the opening, Eckhart is in spin mode, turning the tables on a popular talk show when he states health officials want a young teen stricken by cancer to die more than big tobacco does, since the boy would be a martyr to them, but only a single lost customer to the industry. Audiences gasp, panelists guffaw, and the kid happily shakes Nick's hand. The Academy of Tobacco Studies has a colorful array of folks surrounding Nick, including his cantankerous boss (J.K. Simmons) and the Colonel (Robert Duvall), tobacco's undisputed leader. His closet friends are lobbyists for guns (David Koechner) and alcohol (Maria Bello) who discuss their odd businesses over regular lunches, but when a cutie-pie reporter (Katie Holmes) swings into Nick's life, things begin to unravel. Based on Christopher Buckley's even more outlandish novel, Thank You for Smoking is a bright light for the filmgoer tired of gutless films formulated by committee, and first-time filmmaker Jason Reitman has expertly cast the film, which includes deft turns by William H. Macy and Sam Elliot. Nick's son, a throwaway in the novel, becomes a major influence here in Nick's development and a key student of Naylorisms such as, "If you argue correctly, then you're never wrong," though a father and son trip to Hollywood to visit an uber agent (Rob Lowe at his most suave) demonstrates how the inclusion of the son both helps and hurts the film. Book fans will miss the wicked plot turn, but the final result is a sharp and smart comedy deserving of a long, savory drag. --Doug Thomas

    Description

WARNING: Thank You For Smoking "just might make you laugh your head off!" (MAXIM). Aaron Eckhart stars as Nick Naylor, a sexy, charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator (William H. Macy) bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test. As Nick says, "If you want an easy job, go work for the Red Cross."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delicious politically incorrect film.......2007-07-06

Thank You for Smoking is a delicious politically incorrect film that pokes fun at our knee-jerk PC nature in the most unlikely of ways. Taking the most demonized now of our society's legal but dangerous products, the cigarette, through Nick Naylor, the lead lobbyist for the tobacco industry in Washington, D.C. the film provokes thought about how we judge people.

Instead of playing Naylor as simply an overly slick salesman, the story shows Naylor, portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, as a committed father trying to create a better relationship with his son. Through this dedicated parenting we see the smiling lobbyist as a real person fighting the good fight for a losing side. An air of admiration actually takes hold for Naylor as everyone does have bills to pay. Therefore the movie is littered with points of view that in an entertaining fashion reveal how ludicrous much of our condemnation is towards what most people understand to be a dangerous product. Naylor is clearly fantastic at the game of spin, but so is everyone else who is in the game of trying to shape public opinion. Therefore even the public servant trying to put a skull and cross bones on cigarette packs or the dying cancer victim railing against the tobacco industry is revealed to be very good at the same manipulations and/or carry the same self-centered motivations as a skilled tobacco lobbyist.

The questions then that Thank You For Smoking keeps asking is when has our scorn towards Naylor gone too far, as every good argument does need a counter-argument.

4 out of 5 stars The Sultan of Spin.......2007-06-24

Thank You for Smoking sheds light (as it should do) on several important matters, including: how powerful the Tobacco giants and their associate companies have become, the health hazards associated with cigarette smoking, the power of the media, and the hypocrisy of so many who oppose tobacco.
The film brings to the screen the story of Nick Naylor, a spin-doctor, as he travels with his 12-year-old son across the country showing him what he does for a living.
Aaron Eckhart, Robert Duvall, J.K. Simmons, William Macy, Katie Holmes, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all good and it does get the message across loud and clear.
In short, balanced and fair, Thank You for Smoking, is a movie definitely worth watching, as it is surely an eye opener.

5 out of 5 stars A gem, expertly cut and brilliant.......2007-05-16

Simply said, Thank You for Smoking is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The script is brilliant and all the actors are well cast and do a fabulous job. As an extra plus the exploration of spin and its effects is a real education. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Movie; Almost make you want to take up smoking.......2007-05-14

Talk about a clever story. The satire is amongst the best I have ever seen. The storyline is catchy from the start and you find yourself rooting for what by all accounts in any other movie would be the "bad guy." There are stories going on at multiple levels, which makes it entertaining from start to finish. The writers deserve an oversized oscar for both a creative story and a brilliant concept. If you like intelligent comedies, this is a can't miss movie.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5; satirical and quite funny.......2007-05-14

For all of its nicotine and addictive natures, I never once got into cigarettes. Sure I had a couple but they never once became an addiction. Ironically there are people out there whose sole job it is is to get people to smoke. Criticized for having no moral compass, they basically smooth talk their way into media's hearts by saying the wrong words the right way. As Aaron Eckhart's character says, if you argue correctly, you're never wrong. That is the basic for this film: nobody is really right or wrong, it's just a question of who sounds the most convincing.

Eckhart plays Nick Naylor, a lobbyist for the Academy of Tobacco Studies whose basic job is to downplay the dangers of tobacco and smoking and turn things around in their favor. He doesn't necessarily lie, he just makes the truth sound so cool. But when politicians want to put a more grim warning label on cigarettes, Naylor is called into action but a reporter has that come crashing down and he has to once again, talk his way out of rough waters.

A film like this usually rests on one actor, unlike most where it's an ensemble film. Eckhart is one of those kind of actors that he's so good when he's actually given a good part to play although roles in Paycheck and the Core were at least watchable but here he kind of flexes his muscles. The rest of the cast is great as well with funny cameos from Adam Brody of the O.C, Rob Lowe, Sam Elliot as the Marlboro Man. The only thing about some of the cast members is that they do feel like cameos with Naylor's ex dating a doctor that practically appears in 2 scenes and Katie Holmes as the reporter just feels miscast (someone like Rachel McAdams would've been perfect).

What's enjoyable about the film is that not only is it funny (one favorite is the senator who wants to eliminate all incidents of cigarettes from movies, complete with hilarious alternatives) but it never really feels like an anti-smoking ad in the guise of a film. It argues its pro-smoking points just as well as its anti-smoking ones and leaves it to the viewer to figure out who seems better to you. If its got any faults is that when we start to learn more about Nick the man and not Nick the silver-tongued man on a mission, it doesn't really have the energy when the film ramps up in satire.

I'm not sure if you'll end up buying this, but it's a great rental and up to you whether to completely go ahead and buy it. Which isn't a bad thing since it's so funny.

An earnest and at times overblown story of a music teacher's impact on those around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is at times a genuinely touching drama in the vein of It's a Wonderful Life. Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) plays an aspiring composer and musician who takes a job teaching music at a local high school to save money while he composes his music. But when his wife (Glenne Headley) becomes pregnant, Glenn Holland must put aside his dreams and address the everyday realities of his life, from the melancholy and sometimes tragic fates of his students to the discovery that the son he cherishes is deaf. Building to a highly emotional climax in which the teacher sees the impact he's had on the world around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is a showcase for a fine Oscar-nominated performance by Dreyfuss and an engaging, heartwarming story. --Robert Lane

      4 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus.......2007-06-12

Without becoming breezy or overly sentimental, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' shows us the dilemma of many teachers. How does one juggle all of the piles of responsibility one is given, and how does one rise above the fray to achieve greatness? With many hurdles to overcome, Glenn Holland (in an extraordinary performance by Richard Dreyfuss) comes to Portland's Kennedy High School with the aspiration of employment filler with enough free time to compose his own music. Naive about the demands for extra-curriculars and student tutoring, Glenn, nevertheless, must reinvent the wheel and learn to accomodate his students by taking risks to win their love for music. Locking heads with the vice principal (played with perfect starchy officiousness by William Macy), he nearly loses his job and composure. At home his loving, understanding wife will stand by him, but plausibly loses patience when their own beloved son (who was born deaf) gets the shaft on some quality mentor time. Feeling his pain, we also are absorbed in the lives of key students (in fine early performances by Terrence Howard and [Forrest] Whitaker to name a couple). He gets reprieves with the football coach (Jay Thomas) who offers friendship and a spirited rivalry. With a rising starlet at his school and the soundtrack of their lives evolving to John Lennon, the poignancy of a man who has painted himself into a corner comes to roost.

'Mr. Holland's Opus' is as realistic as it is an emotional dead ringer. Admittedly, I prejudged this movie on the notion that it would be facile, cloying, or overly sentimental. Nothing could be further from the truth.

5 out of 5 stars the best driffus movie of al times.......2007-05-23

This movie was smash hit and got Drifus the oscar nomie for best actor. This movie was a smash hit back in 1996 making 83 milion in the United Statee and 103 million world wide. For those of you that loved Forest Gummp you will love this movie. This movie will always be the best Drifuss movie ever made of all time. If one teacher could effect that many kids. Then image what the natios of the world could do in real life. They could come together and put aside their petty differecnes and embrace there fellow man and women. I just have one thing to say God bless you Richard Drifus we need more people like you in these year of war aginst the middle east. Mr. Halland oppus show's the courage and purity that lies in the most seemingly difante of souls. That one man can change the lives of millions of people around him. If we can join together and work with each other instead of destroying and put each other down we can change the world and make it a place of peace for all nations. Christian, Jews, Araibs, Muyslins, Mormons, Japanse Athist everything inbetween from Hindu to Vodo. Together we can face overcome odds that would seem impossible to others. As the old song goes I quote"United we stand divide we fall". I recommend this movie for all ages. There is some mild language but that makes the movie even more phonimal and uplifting. This movie will be an utimate classic for decades to come. Mr Holland's Opus is a real tear jerk you will be laughing and crying at the same time. This movie will make you want enjoy life or in the words of Richard Driffus"Play the sunset!"

Mr. Holland's Opus is such a truly amazing movie! Its one of those movies that you first tune in to for the music, and then realize that it is an inspiring movie. The story of Glenn Holland, a fictional music teacher, who is ousted from his position after 30 years, is extremely touching. At first you don't want to like this man, who thought that he could write a symphony while teaching high school music, but you grow to love him as you see him interact with his students throughout the years. If you like Music of the Heart check out Mr. Holland's Opus.

For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed.

Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

      5 out of 5 stars Laurel & Hardy.......2007-05-15

Being an avid fan of Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy down through the years, I really appreciated the Digitally Remastered versions of "Sons Of The Desert", "The Music Box", "Another Fine Mess", "Busy Bodies" and "County Hospital." The feature film "Sons Of The Desert" is one of my absolute favorites of their collected full length works. It is only rarely that one views a modern comedy of the quality these two portrayed.
