Companion to the Book of the Same Name.......2007-02-01
Isn't God Great! After I had read THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH, a civilian movie house was showing this movie near Aberdeen Proving Grounds and I went with a friend to see it! This cetainly reinforced the message of the book! (I also have a copy of it on VHS from my aunt.) I think this coindcidence was another example of God's Providence dircting the events of my life! Orson Wells' the narrator, was a good dramatic narrator. Wasn't he the one that had produced the big radio drama hoax THE WAR OF THE WORLDS? that scared the death out of so many people on the Halloween of long ago? One interpretation of Armageddon is that angeles like aliens in UFO's (or chariots in Bible language) from Heaven might accompany Christ at his Second Coming and wipe out all the anti-Christians.
This movie had some interesting small mention of how some students of the Bible had associated Adolph Hitler with the Antichrist, but Hal thought this was laughable. Some serious German minsters like Dietrich Bonhoffer did actually believe that Hilter was indeed the Antichrist. And he lost his life for speaking out against Hitler on the radio.
It is nice to hear how some serious thinking scientists do see the end coming to mankind. Things like Global Warming, Acid Rain, overpopulatiuon and famine. And I do know what was said about the Hebrew Prophets that if they did not predict things with 100% accuracy, they were put to death under the Old Testament Law.
I know that I have critics already that run me down becuase I am a divorced and am still looking for a wife. I have seen on the Wilkerpedia that Hal Lindsey has been married four time!
I have seen this movie four or five times.
The US military takes Hal Lindsey, his teachings and opinions so serioulsy that he supposedly lectures at some US War College for officers in Washington DC. I had read this on some liberal website that was critical of Hal Lindsey. But to me that kind of respect from the military of his opinions only makes him look more intelligent to me-not some WACO WACKO- like my government enemies in Toledo call me!
Truth be told.......2006-03-14
People don't want to look at the obvious fact that this world is falling apart. this flys in the face of evolution which says we are getting smarter and better but a simple look at the billions of people living in poverty and the daily disasters in the news tell us of the grim truth, that the Bile is Right! Hal Lindsey does an excelent job of explaining some of the last days events (the times we are living in) and how they are culminating into the global judgments listed in Revelation and the prophets.
If this movie doesn't open your eyes to the truth of God's Word and how it is being played out in the news today, nothing will.
When The Sun Goes Nova.......2005-12-30
Hal Lindsays' teaching on Biblical prophecy as encapsulated in his best-selling book 'The Late Great Planet Earth' had a major effect on evangelical Protestantism during the decade of the '70's. An effect so profound that just about every pastor teaching prophecy today approaches the subject using the same methodological framework that Hal made so popular a quarter of a century ago.
This DVD released in '78 is a visual restatement of Hal Lindsay's prophetical teachings. Now that some 27 years have passed since it's release the information contained upon this disc is far from cutting edge material. It does however serve as a fascinating timecapsule concerning many of the current events of that generation and the theological underpinnings of how the Church interpreted those events from a Biblical perspective.
Whether you buy into the "End of the World" scenario as presented by Evangelical Christianity or not it's worthy of at least one viewing. There might even be a few surprises that you didn't expect.
Hal Lindsey - Father of modern eschatology.......2005-11-22
Please ignore the bigoted comments of the person above who obviously has an axe to grind with Christians. This movie left quite an impression with me as a teenager. Hal is a dedicated student of Bible prophecy and his book from which this movie is based has sold 10 million copies since it came out in the late 60's.
Hal Lindsey is not a prophet, nor ever claims to be one: He is simply a scholar of Bible prophecy that is unafraid to speculate on the meaning of the imagery presented in the book of Revelation. Keep in mind he saw the Islamic threat long before it became national headlines.
Yes, we are probably safe from killer bees. But with the current wars, rumors of wars, pestilences, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes Hal's movie is more relevant than ever.
Hal Lindsay, False Prophet.......2004-12-14
"It's almost as if we had an unconscious desire to see the biblical prophesies fulfilled," frets narrator Orson Welles in this classic piece of Christian fearmongering. Quietly insane evangelical minister Hal Lindsay attempts to marry revelation to then-current affairs in an effort to prepare us for the armageddon that lies just around the corner. Obviously, with 25 years of hindsight, we now know he was wrong, and continues to be wrong, but had really swingin' fashion sense circa 1976.
Many actual scientists and deep thinkers appear on screen in LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH, and you'd be forgiven if you felt that some of them (who are clearly talking along evolutionary lines) were being taken out of context to support Lindsay's crackpot theories. Lindsay's apocalypse is scotch-taped together out of all the Bad News that was available at the time of production. Thus, Lindsay's world was set to end as a result of any number of nasty afflictions. Recombinant DNA! Brazilian killer bees! Viruses from Hell! Atheists and witches run amok! And, as Orson says, "Nucular" Holocaust. It's Hal's nauseating belief that if you don't have hardcore Christian faith, then your ONLY possible options are witchcraft, astrology, transcendental meditation, Hare Krishnas or the Rev. Sun Myung-moon's wacky Reunification Church! In any case, Hal sez you haven't got a prayer.
As always, Hal saves the best for last, enlightening us as to the coming of the antichrist, a figure he believes is alive today (at least as of 1976), and who would achieve omnipotence through seemingly good deeds and the establishment of world peace before enslaving everyone with microchip implants supplied by the then-fledgling computer industry. Or something. Apparently, only those who heed Hal's book and movie can avoid falling under the spell of this evil maniac. He then proceeds to illustrate his argument with imagery designed to stoke the usual cold-war paranoia: before or around 1982, sez Hal, Russia and China will invade the middle east (didn't happen), the European market will grow to a prophesied ten member nations (25 and counting and still no armageddon), and the "nucular" bombs will rain from the skies like the falling stars seen by the biblical John on his island retreat (well, we're still waiting!). Nonetheless, this allows the filmmakers to go mad with stock footage, a delirious and depressing exercise in escalating doom that runs a full six minutes, unnarrated. Oh, the humanity!
Just because Christians love to fulfill prophesies, or see fulfilment where none rationally exists, doesn't mean the prophets were right. It just means that we'll always have to live with people like Hal, desperate to prove their "faith" has substance rather than just keeping it to themselves, and actually learning from it.
As the first person to post a review of this title, I CAN, however, prophecize that many if not ALL the reviews that come after this date, shall be posted by "believers" and Hal Lindsay fartcatchers who shall offer no pertinent details to even remotely suggest that they've actually watched this DVD! Praise!! Verily, they shall only make sweeping comments about the greatness of Hal Lindsay and his books, and how the times we live in today truly are the end of times because of all the bad things they only seem capable of noticing in the world. One shall even claim that people are ACTUALLY IGNORANT of all the disasters happening in the world, as if such NATURAL AND MAN-MADE OCCURENCES are acts of God, and then they shall, rather appropriately, refer to the Bible as "the bile." You just watch. Here endeth the lesson.
Oh, by the way, the Trinity DVD is full-frame, from a tolerable print. No restoration appears to have been done, nor was the film worth any, so dirt and scratches are evident. Sound is undistinguished mono. Extras include a "making-of" theatrical trailer and TV spot, plus a documentary, common to many Trinity discs, called "How American Cinema Changed Hollywood Forever," in which reps for the company grossly overinflate their importance in the Hollywood food chain of the 1970's.

Great, for what it is..........2002-09-18
Post-Vietnam and post-Watergate, Americans back in the mid-1970's were, frankly, afraid. The world had turned upside down, and people were looking for something, anything, to say that we would be alright, or taken care of, or most especially, that we were not alone. Could we rely on a benign force of Nature, or God, or aliens, or other mysterious forces to save us? This fear and wonderment took the form of a blossoming interest in ESP, witchcraft, UFOs, Ghosts, Bigfoot, the Burmuda Triangle, and the mysterious magic of pyramids, King Tut, Stonehenge, and Easter Island. To fuel this public interest and acceptance of the Unknown, a new genre sprang up in film and television; the pseudo-science documentary. "The Late Great Planet Earth" is one of the earliest of these anecdotal, half-baked suppositions based on misread documents, bad science, and wishful thinking to justify its bizzare claims.
Toward the end of his life, Orson Welles hosted a number of pseudo-science documentaries, and even had his own TV show about the mysteries that surround us (think, a low rent version of "In Search Of"). "The Late Great Planet Earth" is one of these projects, and one of the better ones. In fact, it is actually one of the better examples of the genre.
The production values are surprisingly good. The re-enactments are, for the most part, well handled. And of course, we have Welles, intimidating in his silvered beard and black suit, posing the questions of bible prophecy in that powerful voice. Certainly worth a viewing, even if you don't buy into bible prophecy.
Of course the "science" here is worthless, and has been debunked a million times over. However, that isn't the reason people read Lindsey's book or watched this movie.
The film is actually quite well made, so I encourage you to check it out. The opening sweep alone of Earth in space is a better-looking planet effects shot than any I can recall. And again, we have Welles.
Pseudo-science documentaries died out in the early 1980's when the national mindset changed, and are deucedly hard to find today, especially on DVD. Perhaps it is a sort of national embarassment that keeps them from being more readily available, or perhaps the copyright holders of these films feel there is no value or profit in releasing them. This is unfortunate, for they need to be viewed, not only for comedy value, but as a window into the thinking of a past generation. After the events of September 11, the innocence and wonder on display in these projects is all the more poignant.
great late planet earth.......2002-02-04
I really like the movie ,but i had seen it on cable a long time ago ,and at the end there are parts cut out , this is very sad to do this to the movie , sense Hal Lindsey lost control of his movie , who has control seems to feel they can cut out some of it ,i was going to buy 6 more copys for my family ,but i won't now ,
I WAS HORRIFIED .... I want to know how to Survive-healthy........2001-09-16
First viewed in 1986! Now purchasing this video to find clues.
HATED the TOPIC .... IN AWE of the VIDEO ... Subsequently I have never forgotten the content. It is ultra - frightening to see the present day being talked about, by Orson Wells, on this video produced in 1976.
I always remembered how the narrator and Nostradamus were not sure of where on the east coast the new city was; nor were or what the fire in the sky was, as well as location of the twin brothers falling. I still do not know where or what the temple or church they spoke of is located - only that when it is destroyed it marks the beginning of the reign of a new [evil] leader ... IT WAS THE BEST VIDEO EVER SEEN on this depressing topic. The topic offers no SOLUTIONS, only mentions there are survivors of the chemical war. Was horrified by the mention of the land producing no growth for more years than you could ever stock pile food or water ... bringing man to eat man, as a result of chemical warfare . LIKED the fact that this IS ALL FOR A GREATER PURPOSE: which brings about 1000 years of World Peace.
Hence the topic, a bit depressing, once you realize you are living in this mess RIGHT NOW, and you may or may not live to experience the beginning of 1000 years of World peace. Suppose we all have to find our own methods for security, food, water, & health. Money in the bank certainly isn't going to be important with all the RAMPENT LOOTING from HOME TO HOME. Security, Food and Health seem to be the biggest issues. NOT TO MENTION ~ avoiding being killed by your fellow man to be a meal!
Anything For Money........2001-08-09
This film attempts, in its own ridiculous way, to show the viewer that we're living in the "last days", before Jesus' Second Coming. (You know, the Rapture, the Antichrist, and other weird stuff that's been written about for the last 35-40 years.) Hal Lindsey tried to do the same thing, in his best-selling, but far-fetched book, upon which this film is based. Supposedly, both ventures make the claim that that it's all based upon the Bible. I guess that statement is supposed to make it all true, and cause us to quake in our boots.
Unfortunately, the film doesn't make its case. Not even close. Like the book, it simply piles claim upon amazing claim. In the process, it quotes, what look like, authoritative Bible passages, as "proof". But all of those verses are either ambiguous, taken out of context, or irrelevant to the issue being soken about. To say they pertain to the 20th, or 21st, century, is seriously distorting the plain meaning of the sentences. It's reading too much into those passages, for the sake of getting people to make impulsive faith decisions out of fear. And, quite frankly, to make some big bucks. The bottom line is that the existence of unicorns has more "proof" than any of these supernatural claims.
The sad part about it is that otherwise intelligent people have fallen for this claptrap, and invested a good part of their lives in these beliefs. For many believers, as long as an authority figure guides them along, they'll believe anything. When did Orson Welles become a Bible scholar? Mr. Welles might have been one of the greatest film directors and actors of all time -- and I'm a BIG fan of his cinematic efforts -- but he was also a great showman and magician. (He would take on any project for the cash.) The problem is that there are too many gullible people who will fall for these wacko theories.
When I say that the book and the film are both absurd examples of hucksterism, it's after I've read the book, and viewed the film. Then I asked myself the question: "Is this REALLY what the Bible is saying?" Do yourself a favor, and think, think, think, before you take that leap of faith. Stop, relax, check it out. Listen to what he's saying. And ask a lot of questions. Are all of these Bible passages describing events before the end of the world? Or are many of these verses describing things that already happened? Orson Welles, or Hal Lindsey, for that matter, won't tell you that these verses have been interpreted in five different ways, throughout the last 2,000 years. Check out a library book about the history of Bible theology. It's all documented.
Shame on Orson! This was not one of your brighter moments.

There may be far more relevance to Iraq and the mid-east region than is commonly recognized in most books and articles on end-time prophecy.
