Not only did movie mogul Robert Evans produce some of the greatest movies ever made--Chinatown, The Godfather, and Rosemary's Baby, as well as huge hits like Love Story and Urban Cowboy--but he defined Hollywood high life, dating models and movie stars and, eventually, succumbing to cocaine addiction and scandal. You don't live like this without having a huge ego, and that ego is gloriously on display in The Kid Stays in the Picture, a brilliantly dishy documentary on Evans. What puts this cunning compilation of movie clips and digitally manipulated photos over the top is that Evans himself narrates the movie with a riveting mix of narcissistic self-aggrandizement and cool self-assessment. There are no interviews with other people to give any outside perspective on this man's life; for the duration of the movie we are plunged into Evan's own head, and it's funny, sad, and always fascinating. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Robert Evans became head of production at a major Hollywood studio at age 24. Took a studio from worst to first. And brought to the screen a phenomenal string of hits that includes Chinatown and The Godfather. He lived fast. Lived large. Lost it all. Then rose to prominence again. And now the inside-Hollywood story is revealed by ROBERT EVANS in this dazzling show-all movie that's narrated by Evans in his inimitable showman's style!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a Character!.......2007-02-20

Robert Evans has had a more interesting life than any character in his movies, and that is no small feat considering Evans is the man who produced Love Story, Chinatown, the Godfather and many other blockbusters and classics.

This film is a fantastic portrait of an almost incredible man, one that anyone --even those who are not particularly interested in Hollywood-- will enjoy. A spectacular documentary! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE ONE AND ONLY ROBERT EVANS.......2006-09-24

Robert Evans is a creation that could only be conjured up in hollywood. The career this guy has had is nothing short of amazing. It just goes to show you how far looks, charm, and more that a little bullsh#t can take you. I loved this DVD, I mean Evans has no shame and he is what he is and you have to admire the guys candor, i mean he may be a world class as#hole, but he does it with such aplomb and you have to love the fact he is the only white man on earth as tan as George Hamilton, how each of them hasn't succombed to melanoma is beyond me. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This kid loved the movie!.......2006-07-05

I first saw this movie on television it was one of the movies shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Truly loved it.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining exploration of a fascinating Hollywood personality.......2005-12-29

This could also have been entitled "The Comeback Kid." Though the initial purpose of this documentary on the life and career of famed producer Robert Evans was perhaps to act as a nice coda to a colorful riches to rags story, in fact it has served to put Evans back in the public eye and revive his career as a producer. Only five years ago Evans was largely a forgotten man, but today he has a number of projects underway. No doubt this is in part due to having his various legal problems behind him, but clearly his memoir, which was then made into this documentary, played a major role.

THE KID STAYS IN THE PICUTRE is not your typical documentary. For one thing, the only person who talks to the camera is the subject of the film. This is hardly a mea culpa or apologia. It is more of a warts and all self-affirmation of everything Evans has experienced in his career. Much is left out. There is surprisingly little detail on his love life excepting his romance with Ali McGraw, which was clearly the dominant relationship of his life. But there is a frank acknowledgment of many errors made combined with an attitude that could be summed up, "Well, I made a mess, but at least it was my mess."

The heart of the film concerns Evans's triumphs as a producer. Certainly few producers not named Weinstein have been involved in so many remarkable films. ROSEMARY'S BABY, LOVE STORY, THE GODFATHER, CHINATOWN, MARATHON MAN, and THE COTTON CLUB are only a few of the many films he was involved on. There are many fascinating stories about many of these, though for me the most fascinating was the behind the scenes footage taken during the filming of ROSEMARY'S BABY. Another great moment is the short film that Evans made for the corporate powers that be who wanted to pull the plug on THE GODFATHER.

Almost as important as Evans as a character in the film is his beautiful home. There is shot after shot of the grounds and the film finally ends with the only contemporary shot of Evans in the documentary, showing him sitting inside simply being Robert Evans. If the film has a nadir, it comes when Evans was forced to sell his beloved home to a wealthy foreigner. When he wanted to repurchase the home the man wouldn't agree to do so. But Evans's friend Jack Nicholson took matters in his own hands and flew to visit the man, literally getting on his knees to beg him to sell the house back to Evans. He relented and one of the most touching moments in the movie was the camera zooming in on the welcome home card that Nicholson wrote Evans.

All in all, film fans will find this to be an interesting and highly entertaining documentary. Evans has had a colorful life, making his share of mistakes, suffering his share of both really great and truly awful luck, but sticking it out. And partly because of this film, the kid did manage to stay in the picture, and his name will unquestionably appear on a few more films in the years to come.

1 out of 5 stars and the point is???????.......2005-08-14

I just didn't get it. The movie was painfully boring. The only remotely redeeming aspect was some interesting cinematography.

Description

As seen on public television. Regarded as the "father of American ballet," George Balanchine's legacy lives on in his prolific body of choreographic work. Creating over 450 works, Balanchine is, arguably, the foremost contemporary choreographer of the 20th century. Through rare archival audio and video footage, interviews, film, and photographs, this program traces Balanchine's life from his youth at the Maryinsky Theater, through his work for Hollywood and Broadway, to his ultimate creation of the New York City Ballet.  It also focuses on the themes of his work and his thoughts on dancemaking, using interviews with the choreographer himself. Features selections of his vast repertory of ballets, including Chaconne, Agon, Symphony in C, Serenade, Apollo, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, among others.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-06-08

Tons of rare and wonderful dance footage from his ballets spanning four decades and featuring many of his greatest dancers, primarily Suzanne Farrell, his queen. Fascinating, tons of info and beautiful music, definetly an interesting watch even if you're not a ballet fan. Many of Balanchine's dancers are featured in ballets throughout, but none of them are interviewed except Balanchine himself. Instead, the focus is more on the ballets themselves by the narrator. I'm assuming no other interviews besides Balanchine were added because of time limit, but I would have been interested to hear what his dancers had to say about him and their dancing, or how certain dancers inspired him and why, especially his favorite and most impassioned ballerina, Suzanne Farrell. Though there was extensive dance footage of Farrell throughout, I would have loved it if they had interviewed her too (but you can read her book or see her documentary, etc.) and perhaps some other dancers as well. But aside from the lack of dancer interviews, this movie is without question an abolute MUST SEE for fans of Balanchine, ballet, or art lovers in general.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Balanchine's work.......2006-02-26

Since I knew little about either the life or the work of Balanchine, I really enjoyed this documentary. I had no idea he was so instrumental in bringing ballet to the United States. My main complaint was that the film was too short. We found out almost nothing about the dancers Balanchine worked with, and we saw only snippets of the ballets. I thought it particularly odd that although Suzanne Farrell appeared in dozens of clips, more than any other ballerina, nothing at all was said about her.

3 out of 5 stars Completely impersonal biography.......2005-01-22

I've never seen a biography that contained less personal information about its subject. This DVD, for example, never mentions Balanchine's marriages to the dancers Maria Tallchief and Tanquil leClerc, or his obsession with the forty-years-younger Suzanne Farrell. These relationships are important for more than just gossipy reasons - all three women had a significant effect on his work. There are some good performance clips on the DVD, but the selection is oddly biased: lots and lots of Peter Martins, but never a glimpse of Edward Villella. A fine "starter CD" for those just learning about Balanchine, but frustrating for fans.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely tribute to the great choreographer.......2004-09-19

This dvd, originally seen on PBS, is a great tribute to the Russian-born choreographer George Balanchine, who founded the New York City Ballet and is often creditted with bringing classical ballet to the United States. This documentary focuses almost exclusively on his professional and artistic life, and this is right and proper. There are books, as well as several documentaries ("Dancing for Mr. B," "Elusive Muse") which focus on Balanchine's complicated personal life. Here, we can just look at his great artistic creations.
There;s archival footage of so many great ballerinas and ballet dancers that were Mr. B's inspiration. Tanaquiel le Clercq (who judging from the footage may have been the most beautiful ballerina to ever step onstage), Diana Adams, Maria Tallchief, Edward Villela, Allegra Kent, Suzanne Farrell, Peter Martins, Patricia McBride ... None of the dancers are interviewed, perhaps because of time constraints. But just the footage of the dancing was enough to keep me happy. I was struck by Mr. B's diversity -- there are many clips of his ballets, and it's a testament to Mr. B's genius that I was always upset when the clips ended, because I wanted to see more.
There are also several interviews with Mr. B. His soft, gentle voice and almost childlike enthusiasm are infectious. Particularly amusing are the clips of him and Igor Stravinsky, the composer whose music whom Mr. B set so many of his best ballets (Rubies, Apollo, Agon et al.) Mr. B talks about his love of cats and cooking. So even though the documentary focuses squarely on the artistic, these interviews with Mr. B humanize him. Read the various memoirs and autobiographies for Mr. B's darker, more complex side: he was famously possessive of his ballerinas, and did not think they should have families or even personal lives apart from him. This video focuses purely on Balanchine as a creative artist.
Recently, more extensive dvd's have been released of Mr. B's complete ballets. But this documentary is still a must-see, a wonderful tribute to one of the 20th century's most prolific and remarkable artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great archival footage!.......2004-04-07

I saw this documentary when it was on public television, and it was fabulous. I have read a lot about Balanchine and his dancers, and actually seeing them was amazing. There is even footage of Pavlova and Tanaquil LeClerq dancing in their prime. A definite must-see for ballet and Balanchine enthusiasts!

And if you are not a Krista Allen fan yet, then you REALLY need to buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Story.......2002-01-21

This episode pretty much has Hafron and Emmanuelle teleporting to different parts of the world and "doing it". There is the continuing plot from an earlier episode of some group on Earth trying to track them down. That's the main reason for Emmanuelle and Hafron to jump to different parts of the world. Otherwise, this episode is mostly sex scenes.

Although it's a great idea to feature both of these films as a 2-fer DVD, each one suffers from bad transfers. The worse of the two being "In Hollywood". There is a strange blue/gray blemmish at the top of the film that lasts throught the entire movie. While the films are not the best made by Abbott & Costello- thanks to MGM who never knew how to make comedies, they are still fun to watch and are a must for completist geeks like myself.

This release is a total slap in the face to Abbott & Costello fans.Warner home video should be ashamed of themselves, the video transfer quality is absolutely terrible. After watching this double feature,it's evident that no amount of restoration went into this release. While Abbott and Costello fans will find the movies funny, they won't be laughing over the video quality.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of Outer Space.......2006-08-07

Emmanuelle gets elected to become the captain of a group of strange, space men and women from a distant galazy, led by Haffron, a cute guy who knows next to nothing about sex. Haffron has a sort of Patrick Swayze looks and must come from some kingdom too poor to buy any underwear. Emmanuelle, ever playful, has had a showdown with her earth boyfriend, Philip, not a bad sort but a jealous fellow who won't let her explore her sense of adventure. With this in mind, she has sex with Haffron as they perform monitored with a hundred wires which allow the rest of the crew to monitor their bodily sensations.

What can Emmanuelle, a lovely girl played by the incomparable Kirsta Allen, teach a bunch of overeducated, brainiac space creatures? Well, first off, none of them have ever had sex since in their nation, to procreate one must simply slough oneself in two, and that's how children are made, therefore there has n ever ben a need for sex. Bowever, Haffron so enjoys the earthly delights of Emmanuelle that he becomes a sex addict sort of, and poses as Emmanuelle's brother as she returns to earth to confront jealous Philip, who, as it happens, is giving his missing fiancee a taste of her own medicine by throwing a wild orgiastic party. She twitches her nose and changes out of Krista Allen's body into another (so that Phil won't recognize her) and attempts to seduce him to test her theory that he's a cheater, while Haffron tries to pick up different [...] at the party. They succeed and the two couples have sex in adjoining rooms. Dumb old Haffron picks up a "professional" who asks him for $200. "What's 'money'?" he asks in his inane royal hiccup. When he drops his pants her eyes widen and she rushes right over. "Never mind, this is a freeby!" she announces.

In space, Emmanuelle accepts the thanks of the space people for treating Haffron so well, but says that even becoming their queen won't satisfy her need for travelling to Egypt so they better let her abdicate. Instead, they accept all her conditions, and allow her to go on her planned barge down the Nile on a swinging singles cruise. Haffron accompanies her, telling her he loves her and to prove it, he says, that even if she changes her body for another female passenger, he will still know it's her, instantly. Farcically he fails to identify her and beds four other women, all of them charming and witty and nubile, but none of them really up to Krista Allen's gold standards.

Badly shot on cheap video stock, but highly recommended nevertheless. FIRST CONTACT's a winner all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars Another Spacey Softcore Flick.......2006-01-19

I'm not sure what everybody is up in arms about. I watched the movie a few hours ago and saw plenty of Kirsta Allen, though, except in the beginning, she was mostly dressed. I think the reason, is the version I watched, which I rented from Café DVD, was unrated. Anyway the other girls were nothing sneeze at and though the sex scenes could have been more sensual there were plenty of them. Overall I thought Emmanuelle in Space - First Contact was an average soft porn flick. Hence the three star rating but only the unrated version.

5 out of 5 stars What are we talking about here people.......2002-12-18

Now if any of you have ever read one of my reviews you know that I take movies at face value. I don't read into them... I don't look to them for hidden meaning or anything like that. That being said why are we trying to find quality in porn. I know this might come as a shock to you all but this is porn... soft-core safe for the teenager in you porn. Nothing more. Saying that I'm disappointed in this movie is like saying that the production value of the hardcore movies is terrible. Why... Why waste your time reviewing this...get what you need out of it (and you all know what I mean) and move on

2 out of 5 stars not so great :(.......2001-05-13

i wasn't happy with this movie...i should have listened to the reviews. there was hardly any krista allen at all. i was expecting something along the lines of the uncut emmanuelle movies ms. allen had done back in 95 and 96. i have all 7 of these unedited movies. each movie is 90 minutes in length and there's a total is 7 movies for a grand total of 10 and a half hours of krista!...

    3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2000-10-14

I have waited so long to see this movie and i was very disapointed with it. The only thing good about it was Krista Allen and she was hardly in the movie. The sex sceens werent even that great. There were very dull and boring. Very bad r rated version and im not sure if the unrated is much more. Im glad i didnt spend movie to buy this. If you want to see a good Emmanuelle movie see Emmanuelle 5 the best of all.

5 out of 5 stars Garfield travel adventures.......2007-06-18

If you are a garfield fan like I am, this DVD is an excellent choice. The stories are great, and I highly suggest this to anyone who doesn't crave action. Action is absent on this DVD, but that is fine because it is not designed for action. Roughing It is the first show. It is the best of them all. I bought this DVD after watching the Garfield movie. I expected Garfield to put up with roughing it the way he did-bad. The next one was average. Paradise island is some kind of scam that Jon falls for. He buys the vacation, only to find that he was ripped off. The third showing is about a pet talent show. This one is good too. It is great because Garfield is in his dreamland. A new Garfield. So, if you enjoyed the Garfield movie, I reccomend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars More of Garfield at his best!.......2006-12-29

It's so great to finally see the specials from my youth appearing on DVD these days. My fondest memories were of the Garfield ones, with Lorenzo Music's incomparable voice and Jim Davis' lovable characters. Garfield was always my favorite growing up and the DVDs are a must-have for any fan of the fat feline.

"Garfield in the Rough" (which won an Emmy, by the way) tells the tale of Garfield, Jon and Odie on a camping vacation in the woods. While Jon and Odie are loving the great outdoors, Garfield misses his comfy bed and familiar house. Things get hairy, though, when an escaped panther is thought to be in the area. Funny, touching and very worthy of the Emmy!

For the island-lovers out there, "Garfield in Paradise" takes the family once again on vacation, but this time to a remote island, where Jon didn't get exactly what he bargained for. (Garfield: "Oh, you bargained for it alright.") The supporting characters are hilarious and look for a cameo by Wolfman Jack as the 'tribe leader.'

Finally, "Garfield Goes Hollywood" takes the fence act of Garfield and Odie to the world of television, where they win a trip to compete nationally in Hollywood. Quite possibly the most 'moral' of the stories, we see how the family grips with fame and living the high life away from home.

Garfield fans, this is a must-own for your DVD collection! For anyone who is interested in good clean family fun in a cartoon, this is also a must-own for you as well. Garfield was, and continues to be, one of the most hilarious and poignant cats on the tube, and we should be thankful that they have finally released the specials on DVD. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great item - especially if you have children!.......2005-07-19

You have to get this DVD. This DVD has three stories as indicated; Garfield going to Hollywood where he loses to an opera-singing cat; Garfield in the rough where he's almost eaten by a panther, and Garfield in paradise where he is on a "bum" vacation with cheapo Jon. I actually bought these for a toddler who absolutely LOVES them and asks to watch them daily. This is a very long DVD and for a toddler to be able to sit there that long shows quite a bit for the entertainment value of this DVD. Garfield in the Rough was a 1984 Emmy winner, and Garfield in Paradise (1986) and Garfield Goes Hollywood (1987) were Emmy nominees. That said, if you're a Garfield fan, then you need this DVD. Highly recommended for all the Garfield lovers in your life! :)

      Product Description

Louis Gossett Jr. takes viewers through a special documentary celebration of the groundbreaking achievements of African-American performers and their contributions to Hollywood filmmaking. Spectacular film clips, rare behind-the-scenes footage, archival photographs and fascinating interviews chronicle nearly a century of tribulation and triumph. Gazing at the outstanding range of African-American stars on today's movie screens, it is hard to imagine a time when there were no black leading men or women, a time when all of the roles available for people of color were considerably less heroic than they are now. Social progress came in small steps on the silver screen, film by film, for equal visibility and dignity on the silver screen; now it is possible to honor their struggles, their talent and their sacrifices. From the jaw-dropping athleticism of dancers like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers to the amazing singing of Lena Horne, Ethel Waters and Dorothy Dandridge; from the early comedy routines of the legendary Stepin Fetchit to gripping dramatic moments featuring Paul Robeson and James Earl Jones, this tribute to some of America's greatest entertainers draws from dozens of classic films. Highlights include Pinky, No Way Out, Stormy Weather, Carmen Jones, The Great White Hope -- and many more groundbreaking films. Rare footage from studio archives helps tell the inspiring story of performers whose talent and determination would help them surmount all obstacles along the road to success. Featuring exclusive interviews with the Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines, Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee, Bobby Short and Donald Bole, Small Steps, Big Strides tells the moving story of African-American entertainers and their accomplishments in Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars A very good documentary to depict the black person's struggle for true quality in Hollywood movies.......2007-04-05

Small Step Big Strides: The Black Experience In Hollywood provides you with an accurate and moving retrospective of the history of blacks in the movies. Although this documentary is only a brief 58 minutes you learn a great deal about the ways black people were portrayed in movies since the early 1900s. This DVD uses rare footage and great interviews with stars of the day to flesh out the theme of racial prejudice against blacks in Hollywood as well as what black people had to do to overcome it.

Because of wide spread and deep seated racial prejudice, black people initially had to be content watching white actors in blackface depict them on the screen. The black characters were always reduced to the lowly positions of being a "mammy" or a rather ignorant, uneducated man.

However, black people took steps forward in early black films including MGM's Hallelujah and Hearts in Dixie by Fox in 1929. The documentary uses footage to show that blacks still had to stick to strict racial stereotypes even within these early all black cast movies.

This DVD then chronicles how things began to gradually improve for black actors. For example, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was the first black actor who could befriend a person of the opposite race when he danced with Shirley Temple; and Paul Robeson finally enjoyed a lead character role in The Emperor Jones.

Moreover, this DVD discusses in depth the two movies Stormy Weather and Cabin In The Sky. Stormy Weather was one of the first big budget musicals to feature an elegant all black cast. Black people were finally showcased as great entertainments with meaningful intellect and talent; the movie featured Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, the dancing Nicholas Brothers, Lena Horne and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. At the same time, MGM's Cabin In The Sky also starred Lena Horne and Duke Ellington. The DVD uses footage from these two films to demonstrate how, for the first time ever, blacks were taken very seriously in Hollywood. One of the surviving Nicholas brothers comments on this during his interview and what he has to say sheds extra light on this situation.

The DVD also uses footage to give examples of how, by the early 1950s, a black actor like Sidney Poitier was able to embody the true complexity of life in black America--as long as he was clean cut. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte were soon the first black "hot" couple; and by the late 1960s there was the then rather daring Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. This movie took on the challenge of dealing with interracial marriage; but the DVD also shows how Guess Who's Coming To Dinner was done so as to offend as few people as possible.

By the late 1960s the DVD lets us see that Hollywood wanted to portray the more militant blacks who wanted action much, much sooner than later as in films like The Incident and The Great White Hope. The producers of the DVD choose excellent clips from both movies to make their points very well.

Despite the fact that this DVD was made in 1998, the commentary and footage end with films from the year 1970. I must take off one star for this because the constantly evolving black experience from 1970 until today receives no attention from this documentary.

All in all, Small Step Big Strides: The Black Experience In Hollywood tells the story of how blacks gradually made headway in Hollywood. They went from being completely passive observers of white actors in blackface to portraying human beings with complex characters, real human quirks and very heroic qualities. I highly recommend this documentary DVD for people who want to study the black experience in Hollywood. People who want to study the American black experience in general will also benefit from watching this documentary.
