Product Description

The Beatles' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and 1965 helped catapult the band to stateside fame and fortune. Their debut performance alone was viewed by 73 million viewers. This collection compiles four full episodes containing 20 songs in total, and including other guests like Soupy Sales, Cab Calloway, and Cilla Black; and even commercial breaks. Shown in their original black and white, these episodes convey the feeling of a bygone era, while placing some of The Beatles' early appearances in a framework that shows how they eventually exploded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. The four Beatles, with their fluffy mop-head haircuts and little black suits, look like fresh-faced kids as they stride nervously onto the stage in their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, February 9, 1964. Met by screaming, lovestruck fans--mostly teenage girls dressed in clean-cut sweaters with their hair curled and combed--The Beatles launch into a trio of carefully played songs including "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," and "She Loves You." The next two weeks, on February 16 and February 23, 1964, they reappear on the Ed Sullivan Show, each time to the same unabashed hero worship, performing hits like "Twist and Shout" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The last episode on this fascinating collection, September 12, 1965, shows how the band has changed after a year and a half--with longer hair, a loose and rebellious spirit, and a bolder stage presence. Through these classic television episodes, viewers of all eras can join the fab four as they begin their ascent into the musical history books, courtesy of the Ed Sullivan Show.

5 out of 5 stars A Simpler Time?.......2007-05-13

In 1964 there was no cable or DVD's, television sets were black and white, consisted of three networks and was probably limited to one set per home. When the Beatles were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show in February of that year most viewers had never even heard their music. These DVD's not only show the Beatles performances from four shows but you see four entire programs, commercials and all. It is a great slice of Americana, a look back to a simpler time when television viewing was a family activity.
The Beatles went on to be the most important and successful entertainers of our time. I wonder how difficult it would be to present them to such a wide audience in this day and age and if it would have altered their success? We clearly are fortunate that it happened the way it did.

5 out of 5 stars THANKS TO ED SULLIVAN, THE BEATLES SAVED ROCK N' ROLL........2007-04-13

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic DVD classic shows entitiled "THE FOUR COMPLETE HISTORIC ED SULLIVAN SHOWS FEATURING THE BEATLES." This legendary historic DVD was released in 2003 by Sofa Entertainmaent. Please remember that these historic shows were recorded in the 60's with primitive technology as compared to today's recording technology standards. These priceless jewels were recorded live in Black & White. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic treasure or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE BEATLES will forever always be remembered in our hearts as THE FAB FOUR comprising of JOHN PAUL GEORGE and RINGO. In the roaring 60's, THE BEATLES made so much noise musically as a result of the healthy lungs of Beatlemania that THE BEATLES were becoming bigger than life itself. Who would have ever believed that a simple Rock n' Roll band from Liverpool, England like THE BEATLES could even be as popular as Jesus. (That's right, I even said it.) THE BEATLES music was still extremely popular in England but the band's popularity and musical impact was being heard the world over resulting in sneaking its way into many countries such as the United States. THE BEATLES have conquered England, it was now time to conquer the world. Due to the extreme popularity and demand for more imported copies of THE BEATLES 45 RPM hit single "I Want To Hold Your Hand," BEATLES Manager Brian Epstein thought of an ingenius idea of taking his British act THE BEATLES over to America to see if THE BEATLES could conquer America. And so Brian and THE BEATLES flew over to America anticipating no reception of any kind. WRONG! When THE BEATLES landed at JFK airport in New York City, it was MADNESS! Thousands and thousands of screaming fans were everywhere at the airport screaming and waiting to get a glimpse of THE BEATLES. When THE BEATLES arrived, the screams got louder. THE BEATLES were totally unprepared for the unbelievable reception. Legend has it that THE BEATLES actually thought that the President of The United States was also at the airport at the same time. Believe it or not, before stepping foot on American soil, THE BEATLES were America's number one band. THE BEATLES press conference at JFK airport is the true stuff that is made of legend. THE BEATLES were so witty and funny that the press were just having a field day as well as the fans. Mr. Ed Sullivan must have seen all of this coverage on TV because like ELVIS, Sullivan wanted THE BEATLES on his show. And so it happened, which brings me to the 2-DVD set Ed Sullivan collection featuring THE BEATLES that I'm about to review for you now. THE BEATLES appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show four times, two of them setting audience attendence records as well as viewer TV audience records. The dates of these four shows were recorded on 9 February 1964, 16 February 1964, 23 February 1964 and 12 September 1965. The most memorable of all these shows would be the legendary historic 9 February 1964 which introduced THE BEATLES to America. An estimated 73 million viewers watched this event which was at that time, the most watched TV event in television history. Believe it or not, during that one hour telecast of The Ed Sullivan show, NOT ONE CRIME WAS COMMITTED IN NEW YORK CITY. In my opinion, these legendary BEATLES performances on the Ed Sullivan Show is a true testament of four extremely talented young men that were without a doubt, musical genius'. THE BEATLES not only saved Rock n' Roll, but they became extremely patriotic as spokesman as to what the true spirit of Rock n' Roll should be like. These 2-DVD priceless jewels is a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band and a fine American like Mr. Ed Sullivan that were definitely truly indeed, far ahead of their time. And now without further delay, it gives me great pleasure in taking you back in time to the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on 9 February 1964, 16 February 1964 (This show was telecasted live in miami, Florida), 23 February 1964 and 12 September 1965 where THE BEATLES are about to take the stage and make music history.

DVD ONE begins with the legendary historic 9 February 1964 show in which THE BEATLES take the stage for the first time and deliver the refreshing and innocent song "All My Loving," the slow and beautifully well sung number "Till There Was You" and the early BEATLES Rocker "She Loves You." THE BEATLES would take the stage for the second half of the show and sing one of the first early Lennon/McCartney compositions "I Saw Her Standing There" and the forever popular BEATLES trademark song "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

The 16 February 1964 Ed Sullivan Show was telecasted live in Miami, Florida and takes right where the 9 February 1964 Show left off. THE BEATLES would again, play before another record setting audience as well as the TV audience. THE BEATLES would waste no time and begin the electrifying song "She Loves You," the slow and beautiful "This Boy" and the uplifting "All my Loving." THE BEATLES would return for the second half of the show and begin by playing the early Rocker "I Saw Her Standing There," the true and breathtaking song "From Me To You" and the ever popular BEATLES song "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

DVD TWO begins with the 23 February 1964 Ed Sullivan Show in which THE BEATLES deliver another great performance. THE BEATLES begin with the ISLEY BROTHERS classic, the groundbreaking early Rocker "Twist & Shout" and a different version consisting of George playing the lead guitar riff in place of John's Harmonica "Please Please Me." THE BEATLES would return for the second half of the show and sing the unbelievable "I Want To Hold Your hand."

Over a year would pass before THE BEATLES would make their final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on 12 September 1965. THE BEATLES would take the stage and begin their segment with the incredible "I Feel Fine," the Little Richard sounding Rocker "I'm Down" and a great song sung by the one and only Ringo, "Act Naturally." THE BEATLES would take the stage in the second half of the show and sing the blistering early hard Rocker "Ticket To Ride," the most beautiful and well orchestrated version of this song ever, "Yesterday" and the blasting mellow Rocker "Help."

May I also add that THE BEATLES performances on all four Ed Sullivan Shows is exactly the kick that Rock n' Roll desperately needed in order to carry and live on. THE BEATLES were definitely red hot and on fire during all four of these performances. Thank God someone took care of these legendary historic taped shows to the best of their abilities so we would all one day see what the real true fuss of THE BEATLES was really all about.

Overall, this is one great 2-DVD set collection worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard BEATLES fan or a devout music collector. I cannot picture anyone not knowing who THE BEATLES are so I will just say that everybody all over the world should own the whole BEATLES collection and catalog. In my opinion, OWNING THE BEATLES COMPLETE COLLECTON IS A NECESSITY. THE BEATLES legendary historic performances on four Ed Sullivan Shows are all part of music history as well as American history.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic 2-DVD set collection to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal DVD music collection. This priceless treasure has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come resulting in recruiting more new BEATLES fans. This is one great collection that all music fans as well as devout music collectors would not want to be without.

In closing, THE BEATLES would make many successful movies establishing them as comedians to be compared to the comedy team of The Marx Brothers. THE BEATLES would continue their rule and reign over Rock n' Roll and its world for many more years till the day they broke up in 1970. I guess you can say that when THE BEATLES broke up, a large part of Rock n' Roll died with them forever. The contributions and accomplishments that THE BEATLES made and gave to Rock n' Roll speaks for itself and has never been matched nor will they ever be denied. Millions of dollars were being offered by some promoters in hopes of reuniting THE BEATLES for one concert. Depite all of the efforts by promoters, THE BEATLES would never reunite again. With the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison, a BEATLES reunion now is impossible. THE BEATLES received the highest ultimate honor in being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With that in mind, THE BEATLES have forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history as well as world history and will never ever be forgotten. So here's to you FAB FOUR, the late great John, Paul, the late great George and Ringo. Thanks for the great memories. JOHN LENNON LIVES. GEORGE HARRISON LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEATLES FOREVER. R.I.P. JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Not enough stars.......2007-03-26

I'm sure some folks will not agree with with me and thats ok. I think there are not enough stars to rate this. Three big reasons:
1) The Beatles
2) The other acts
3) Commercials
Trip down memory lane for me back to grade school. And I kept hearing my Dad [...] about the "long hair", when 4 years later he would have bought me a car if I wore my hair that short.
What a gem. At least for me.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for 4 stars.......2007-01-30

I must be gettin' old - Mitzi Gaynor dancing, Steve Rossi singing, and Soupy Sales doing the Mouse seemed, for a brief interval, just as good as the Fab Four - The Group Formerly Known As the Silver Beatles. Hey George, what's with the staring into the camera?
Don't worry, folks, as good as the above three were, and as bad as some others were (Comedians Dave Barry and Morty Gunty had the kind of awful material that no consideration for the period, their presumptive target audience, etc., or other factors could possibly compensate), the four shows (shown as complete telecasts!) have a permanent place in history: It was alot more than rock and roll with a new twist (sorry...). This was the beginning of "Rock", a progressive, intellectual approach to records and concerts: a group (or solo artist) absolutely had to *progress* on the next project - no repetitions! It's interesting to reflect that at least in my circle of friends and acquaintances it wasn't called "Rock and Roll" - it was "The Beatles" - it was, simply, *new music*.
I found the format, the quality, the packaging, to be fine, and exceptionally low-priced! The Beatles' performances are excellent, except on the Miami show, when it seemed they were a bit cramped on the set and the mix was off - here Sir Paul keeps it all together with his genius: singing his head off and playing bass like there's no tomorrow.
Historians might want to look for the Presley/Sullivan package for perspective. One main difference with all due respect to the forerunner: the Beatles' managed to keep *the music* up front.

2 out of 5 stars Historical value, but poor image quality.......2006-05-14

It's very nice to go back to those exciting years with this DVD, but they could have done a better job with the image digitalization. There is much better image quality bootleg DVD's out there with virtually the same content. I think fans deserve the best for the money they spend and unfortunately, this is not the case.

Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later appear in Lester's film. The only thing missing is Paul's grandfather.

The performance segments alone are a must for fans. The three Ed Sullivan appearances show a great cross section of their hits at the time, including "All My Loving," "I Saw Her Standing There," a beautifully delivered "This Boy" by John Lennon, and a wobbly "I Saw Her Standing There" so out of tune George Harrison nearly cracks up as he listens to Lennon and Paul McCartney struggle for harmony. The blurry, badly mic'd footage of the concert at the Washington Coliseum shows the Beatles acting as their own roadies, setting up their instruments; the platform Ringo Starr drums on lurches ominously with each downbeat. It was a more innocent, exuberant time, to be sure, and this sweet documentary lets the Beatles phenomenon speak for itself. --Anne Hurley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Need this Dvd !.......2007-05-21

This is the original film documentry by the Maysles brothers, of the Beatles' first American visit. When the boys came to our shores in February 1964, the Maysles were commisioned to follow them around with cameras, detailing their every move during the entire brief tour. The result is now on dvd, fully remastered and really fun fun fun to watch.

A visual diary of Beatlemania unfolding for the first time, in America, the cameras follow them from the minute they descend the steps of the aircraft until they ascend again. In keeping with the cinema verite' style, there is no narration, only diologue, and events captured as they unfold. The camera captures the fan hysteria at the airport, in front of the Plaza Hotel, and of course in the Ed Sullivan studio, during the live taping of their historic appearances. It even eavesdrops on Murray the K as he counts down on his WINS radio show, the minutes to their arrival. But of course, 99% of this film is the Beatles themselves, just being themselves. (Or as natural as you can be if you have a camera in your face all the time.) You see them in the car going to the hotel, in the hotel , in Central Park, at the Peppermint Lounge,... everywhere, including their excursion to Miami Beach.

It's fun to note their excitement as they witness their impact on America, and realize that they are the first British act to actually win the hearts of this big, intimidating country. Their excitement is obvious and unrehearsed, especially Paul's. When I first watched this dvd, I hadn't seen The Beatles for a long time, and I was so overjoyed to see and hear them again. I had forgotten how young they were. I was also surprised that Paul comes across as the most natural, and the one who wears his heart on his sleeve (so to speak) more than the others. He can barely contain his excitement, and happiness in this film, and he doesn't bother trying. I was really surprised by how funny he is. In almost every scene, he is doing a funny accent or impersonation of someone, and he's really good. People seem to associate John with this sort of humor, but Paul was just as funny. John on the other hand, plays the cool man, putting a check on his excitement. In the car going to the hotel, John and Ringo look on with affectionate amusement as Paul, barely able to contain himself, practically bounces out of his seat, waving a transister radio around. George and Ringo are seen doing some slapstick on the train going to Washington D.C. but it isn't as funny as the droll one liners that both of them became known for as time went on. And in this particular film, they are not as fun to watch as dear Paul...and ultra cool John. The extras offered with this treasure of a dvd are also worth it. They contain out takes from the original film which include more clowning around, more McCartney craziness, ( in one scene with Murray the K, and later by the Plaza elevator, Paul almost seems, dare I say it,...high.) They had just left the Peppermint Lounge so who knows? Also of interest, are interviews on the street with snobby music students as they pontificate about the Beatles. If you're over a certain age (or you've seen the movie, Animal House), you know the type. Those early 60's folky type girls, with long hair, very well spoken, intellectual, and talking about how they don't normally listen to pop music, only folk and classical. Yeah yeah yeah. Anyway this is a very important addition to the Beatlephile library and I cherish it for it's historical and entertainment value. You will too.

Awesomely nostalgic. Lots of stuff that you most likely haven't seen before. Definitely recommended for anyone who lived the experience "back in the day"

5 out of 5 stars The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit.......2007-02-10

This was great! We all loved it! If you are a Beatle fan, it is a must.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See For Even The Casual Beatles Fan.......2006-09-18

The Beatles' First U.S. Visit is, behind "The Compleat Beatles" and their self-produced "Anthology", the most entertaining and revealing about this musical group of four doing what they were born to do, on the way to the crest of their musical creativity. The performances on the American "Ed Sullivan Show" are entertaining for fans and interesting as historical documents, but the true gems are the sequences of non-performance documentary footage of all four members of the group, Brian Epstein, and (briefly, hush-hush ;)) Cynthia Lennon. This footage provides a window into The Beatles' emotional state during this life-altering point in their career. They balance organized professionalism (largely achieved by Brian Epstein, often under-appreciated in that he was managing a musical act achieving unprecedented popularity with no precedented business or professional model) with their excitement of their success in America. Then and now, largely the Holy Grail of success in entertainment. Paul, as would seem to be his role in their entire career together, acts as a conduit between George, John, Ringo and their handlers, like encouraging Ringo to pack his suitcase thouroughly in a "mother hen" voice. Watching them listen to themselves on the radio in America, seeing footage of car-mobbing people from the INSIDE of their car, seeing John tease instrumental DJ Murray The K (none the wiser) with pervy English slang, and The "Ed Sullivan" performances themselves is priceless. Though by February 1964 they were well versed in Hotel Room culture, their upbeat moods reveal their happiness (and reported surprise) at their reception from the moment they stepped off the trans-Atlantic airplane. Seeing this week of pivotal events in rock n' roll history from is a wonderful peek behind the Beatles' curtain on par with their "Anthology" and not to be missed by any casual or greater fan. Probably, if purchased, one of the Beatles-related home media films you will find yourself repeat watching more than others. Well shot by the Maysles brothers, directed and edited. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Really great stuff.......2006-03-22

This is a great documentary that a fan can watch over and over again. Although my favourite Beatles' era is their middle period (RS through MMT), followed by their late period (1968 to the end), there's a charm and sweetness to their early years as well, even though their songs were more lightweight and poppish. They also looked so alike in this period, and it's charming to see how naturally they conducted themselves in front of the camera, just four innocent boys who had recently made it big and were having a great time on their first visit to America (although George had already been on his own in 1963 to visit his sister). Nothing was faked or staged, and nothing is boring either. The wit and charm was just so natural. The documentary of outtakes is also very good, and serves to give a fuller picture of what went on during the filming.

However, as others have said, this documentary contains footage of their performances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and at the Washington Coliseum, footage which is already available on other DVDs (although since I'm not one to nitpick over minor technical details in lieu of the big picture, I won't go into which has better audio or visual quality). It seems as though they could have put in the unused scene they shot when they went into the nearest apartment to watch the show with a family, instead of putting in footage already available elsewhere. I also found the audio commentary to be rather lacking. There were way too many long pauses and not nearly enough comments or observations. How hard could it have been to fill up the nearly 90 minutes with practically nonstop comments and observations, particularly when we're dealing with The Beatles?

We loved them! Two of our daughters were visiting from San Diego, ages 44 and 35, and they enjoyed the shows every bit as much as we did. What a surprise for all of us to see Carol Burnett do one of her first stand up routines. Our daughter Lacie said, "She was even hilarious back then", and of course we were all captivated by Elvis. Would suggest it to people of all ages.

Product Description

Ed Sullivan's show was straight out of old vaudeville; brief acts of every description, from slapstick comedy to operatic arias. At least once, he showed a film, the only known film of Anna Pavlova (doing her Swan Dance). The Muppets first TV appearance was on Ed Sullivan. Stiff and expressionless, with a peculiar voice and a talent for mispronunciation, Sullivan was at least as recognizable as Cronkite to early 60s viewers. Narrated by Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas 1. The Jackson 5- I Want You Back 2. Bill Hayley & His Comets - Rock Around The Clock 3. Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel 4. 4 out of 5 stars Good performances, but not enough.......2005-01-06

I loved the performances on the DVD: the Doors, Bill Haley, and early Elvis, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Janis Joplin, but I was a little disappointed that it only included one Motown performance: Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations. The Tempts were the best part of this video especially knowing the background to their appearance. No Marvin Gaye? No Four Tops? Well, David Ruffin sings the "(I Know) I'm Losing You" duet with Diana, but Diana gets most of the lead. The song sounded pretty watered down for her. Ruffin was the best part of the duet---such a dynamic performer! I was disappointed in the Mamas and the Papas' performance (very very disappointed). There definitely should have been more performances.

4 out of 5 stars 15 best performances of Ed Sullivan.......2004-03-25

This DVD presents 15 performances (10 in color, 5 in black and white) selected from the Ed Sullivan Show aired at different times in 1950's and 60's. The performers are, in the order of appearance, Jackson 5(with 10 year old Michael!), Bill Haley and His Comets, Elvis Presley, Doors, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Temptations and Supremes, Loving Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, CCR, Young Rascals, and Janis Joplin. Each performance is a gem(with a possible exception of one which appears to be lip-synced); the DVD could very well be called "the 15 best performances of Ed Sullivan". The picture quality is excellent, and the sound clean and good. The commentary by Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas is concise and yet helpful.

So, why not 5 stars? There are only 15 songs, one each by the above 15 performers. Granted that this DVD is priced a little lower than others, the entire show is only 50 minutes. By the time it ended, I felt that I had seen only the first half of it.

5 out of 5 stars Temptations/Supremes Diana/David duet.......2004-01-11

Wow, this is a must to have, not only because it has The Beatles, The Doors, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Bill Haley and the Comets, Janis Joplin and an innocent Jackson 5 (plus more) but it has The Temptations and Supremes on stage together. What really is the best is the lead singers of the Supremes, Diana Ross, and the lead singer of the Temptations, David Ruffin, doing a duet of each other's songs and David blows Diana off the stage. Great stuff.

The King of Rock and Roll would have turned 70 in 2005, the same year Elvis by the Presleys was released. An impressive number, but it's a pea in the ocean compared to the amount of posthumous products bearing his name; and the really amazing part is that some of them actually manage to shed new light on this much-studied icon. Assuming one has the time, stamina, and interest to wade through the enormous amount of material presented on Elvis by the Presleys, this ambitious, well-made documentary-reminiscence certainly falls into that category.

The presence and participation of Presley's ex-wife, Priscilla, and daughter Lisa Marie, as well as Priscilla's parents and sister, Elvis' first cousin, and "Memphis Mafia" member Jerry Schilling, lend an air of authenticity to the project. There isn't a lot here about Elvis' music, although the interpolation of many clips from his TV appearances, movies, concert performances, and recordings more than adequately convey the singer's ineffable (and apparently eternal) appeal. Elvis by the Presleys is more specifically designed to provide an inside look at the day-to-day life of Presley, his family, and those in his immediate orbit, and on that level it succeeds rather well.

There is a lot of talk here--nearly four and half hours' worth (including bonus material), spread out over two discs. Some of the territory covered is yawn-inducingly familiar: Elvis was well-mannered but moody, he was exceedingly generous, he loved Christmas, he appreciated his fans, and on and on. But there are more surprising (at least to the casual fan) revelations as well: Presley was an accomplished horseman; he was not only a good Christian but a voracious reader with an interest in spiritual as well as purely religious matters (he even joined the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles); and he suffered mightily from insomnia. Moreover, while this is a loving tribute, it's not hagiography. Priscilla makes it clear that she and everyone else around Elvis were expected to surrender their own lives to suit his needs and whims, a demand she eventually found unendurable. Nor do they gloss over Elvis' final years, when he was fat, drug-ridden, and disillusioned. Little matter that Elvis Presley is dead. Long live the King! --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but...............2007-04-20

This is a very entertaining, honest documentary and very beautifully done. However, it is blatantly obvious that this was made by Priscilla for Priscilla. She must have needed needed another Elvis cash injection. It should have been called the Beaulieau's and Jerry Schilling on Elvis.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here - Just Good Entertainment.......2006-05-05

Nothing new here...remembering that it is in Pricilla & Lisa-Marie's interest to retain Elvis' name in good light, as Lisa is sole-owner of Elvis' estate and Pricilla a salary-earner from the estate...this was always going to be a one-sided account of his life...no drugs, very little on his extra-maritial affairs, a good father etc....Nevertheless, the music retains the magic and the man retains his charisma...Some input from Pricilla's parents, which you never get to hear....Good light entertainment, with Elvis' image remaining intact.

4 out of 5 stars Finally - new material about Elvis........2006-04-20

I have seen and read everything I can find about Elvis. I like this film by the Presley's. We have not seen nor heard from Priscilla's family before nor have we heard Priscilla speak about Elvis in this way. Priscilla's parents and sister and Lisa Marie join her and I was surprised how they felt about Elvis. They loved Elvis and thought he was a great son in law and I would have thought they would be the ones saying "I told you so". Priscilla explains what it was really like to be married to Elvis and why she could not be herself as long as she was with him. She joined Elvis' life and had to conform to his ways. It was all about Elvis and that was to never change. Priscilla is much more mature and tells things in a different light today and will always defend his honor. Priscilla like everyone else will always have respect for Elvis as an artist. He wasn't the best husband but he was always good to Priscilla and they had a better relationship after their divorce than anytime that she was with him. The pressure was being Mrs. Elvis Presley was off. They found they liked each other any way. They were close until the day he died.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo - Priscilla!.......2006-02-18

I think most Elvis fans want a reason to like Priscilla. She gives us one in this DVD. Priscilla, all grown up - older and wiser, now shares her private times with Elvis. Any fool can watch this DVD and see that Elvis was deeply in love with Priscilla. When she is near him in the home movies, his face lights up, and he shows happiness. Priscilla - if you love Elvis, then love his God. Not a cult created by a science fiction writer.

Priscilla's parents - what a delight! I enjoyed them talking about Elvis. They seem to be everyday people, and Priscilla's father was having a great time talking about Elvis.

Patsy Presley - still a beauty! I'm interested in anything and everything this woman has to say. She knew Elvis from the very beginning. I'd like to have seen more of Elvis' family speak. And I would like to have seen more of Graceland inside and out. Maybe next time.

Lisa Presley - I'm not interested in anything she has to say. Most Elvis fans are very disappointed in Lisa's interviews with her vulgar and trashy language. Why would Elvis Presley's daughter lower herself to appear on the Howard Stern show and use the explicit sexual language she used? She is not going to be the one to continue her father's legacy. Elvis fans are already angry that his own daughter sold him for millions of dollars. Something just doesn't add up about Lisa. There is something very wrong here.

What is going to happen to Elvis when Priscilla is gone? Who is going to be there to protect him the way she does? Who is going to take care of business the way she does? Elvis fans say, it won't be Lisa - or her children. One day Priscilla will leave this earth, and many Elvis fans say Graceland will be sold - for millions of course.

3 out of 5 stars Missed Opportunity.......2005-12-27

It's a mystery, but somehow they have rendered Elvis and his story duller than you could imagine! This is largely a yawnfest of unending Priscilla propaganda. Less interviews and more music would've been this concept's saving grace; alas they missed out on that, the one thing that made Elvis--his MUSIC!! I understand this was to be a personal history by those related to him, but they had Schilling in? Why not some fellow musicians? Guys like Burton or Tutt or contemporaries like Tom Jones? Why not different Memphis Mafia members like Esposito or the Wests? Gee, let's guess, especially as to the latter. Despite the fact that Elvis needs no help in maintaining his mythic status, Priscilla guards it jealously and refuses to let other opinions be heard. Too bad. It get three stars BECAUSE IT IS THE KING AFTER ALL...but it could've gotten five if it had one more hour of music replacing an hour of talk, and if other voices were allowed to be heard by Empress Priscilla.

Outstanding performances by an array of talent ranging from the Rolling Stones and the Animals to Lou Rawls and the Association are among the highlights of this, the first of nine volumes contained in the massive Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics boxed set. Some of the 18 songs are in black and white, some in color; some are completely live, some (including two by the Mamas and the Papas) are totally lip-synced, and some are a combination of the two. In the end, what's good (like the Association's "Along Comes Mary" or the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday") is marvelous; what's not so good, is... well, calling Herman's Hermits' "I'm Henry the VIII, I Am" a "classic" is a bit of a stretch. On the other hand, for some viewers, hearing Sullivan introduce Sonny and Cher as "my little paisans" and the Supremes as "the girls" (he forgot the group's name) may alone be worth the price of admission. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Buy Beatles on Ed Sullivan instead.......2005-10-27

How disappointing compared to The Beatles Ed Sullivan where 4 entire episodes are uncut. And to take you back to Feb 1964 each show includes the commercials!!! Fascinating to see what things were like back then. You get to see the other artists and comedians who make the Beatles look like they dropped in from Mars. The way these are presented uncut and with commercials you see how straight the USA was in February of 1964 and how just 18 months later during the Beatles last performance you get a glimpse of how our culture and society had changed in such a short period of time.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome DVD!.......2005-06-18

I have been looking for this DVD for a long time. When I received it today, I was very excited and very pleased! I am a huge Johnny Rivers Fan. I was afraid that his performance on the DVD might be cut short like the performances on the Best Of The Ed Sullivan Show DVD. But Johnny's entire performance was on the DVD along with extra footage of him greeting Ed after the performance. I was extreamly pleased!

1 out of 5 stars Video equivalent of swiss cheese.......2005-03-31

The custodian at CBS swept the cutting room floor and handed the assemblage off to a dim-witted chimp for editing.
Frustratingly small snippets of songs.
Try this only if you suffer from attention deficit disorder, otherwise you'll be suffering from videoitis interruptus.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best DVD from Ed Sullivan and etc........2005-01-06

The Four Tops, the Supremes, Johnny Rivers, and the Four Seasons were highlights of a mediocre DVD. The Tops did a surprisingly short medley of three of their hits. They looked great up there and there were some humorous parts (I thought). The Supremes looked wonderful as well and Diana primped and sang her heart out, but "My World is Empty Without You" was a little too happy for the song's mood and I've yet to figure out what the happening of "The Happening" is. Johnny Rivers was incredibly stiff and seemed nervous. The song ended rather abruptly. I was impressed by the Four Seasons as well; being able to visualize that nasally sound from Frankie Valli was wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this mess.......2003-06-24

I paid over ...bucks for the the 9 disc boxed set and didn't buy it from a store but ordered on line, so I couldn't get the refund I SO deserved. Rhino..you should be ashamed of yourself for duking lovers of this classic period in Americana. Some oif the performances are cut, Diana Ross and The Supremes' version of Love is Like An Itching in My Heart was part of a 3 song medley when it originally aired (complete w/classic Supremes choreography) and you butchered the other 2 songs. And that's just the start...Folks don't buy this or any other Sullivan "shew" compilation unless all it's the full content of the show. And where is Shirley Bassey?

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-11-10

This DVD has a number of great, classic soul performances that are worth seeing and having. The DVD doesn't get a higher rating because I didn't like the way the performances are organized into different sets on the DVD, not in cronological order. Also, there is a subtitle commentary/facts track you can switch on that, with few exceptions, provides little if any relevant information on the performances or performers. Instead, factoids are provided relating to the lyrics of the song, such as how many homeless people there are in the USA or even which football team won the NFL the year the song was performed. I would have preferred in the commentaries knowing the story of how the band got on Ed Sullivan, where they were in their career at that point, what problems they may have had, where they got their inspiration, etc. Fortunately, there is some of this information during the playing of the DVD itself. Great performances; mediocre DVD production.

3 out of 5 stars MISLEADING.......2005-01-27

THIS DVD DOESN'T HAVE ANY OF THOSE ARTIST MENTION ON THE LIST WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SUPREMES AND THE FOUR TOPS. ARTIST ON THIS DVD ARE THE ROLLING STONES, SONNY & CHER, THE ASSOCIATION AND OTHER ARTIST THAT WERE NEVER WITH MOTOWN. THE DVD IS O.K. AND THE ARTIST ARE REFRESHING BUT I WANTED TO SEE MOTOWN.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff from the Rilly big shoe.......2004-06-12

Those of you who are old enough to remember this will feel warm all over (I vaguely recall seeing the J-5 on this when I was 5, but I recall all these songs). Those who don't may still be entertained and educated. This set contains most of the Jackson 5's appearances on Uncle Ed's show on Dec. 5, 1969 and May 10, 1970 (amusingly, Ed tells the J5 to "enjoy their Christmas presents, not realizing they were Jehovah's Witnesses). Very exciting to watch and is on a par with the Beatles and Elvis appearances for it's historical importance.

Oprah Winfrey has said that seeing Diana Ross and the Supremes' Dec 27, 1964 appearance on the Sullivan show (four days after I was born-how bout that?) changed her life and filled her with aspirations. Considering that few Blacks appeared on TV in those days, one has to put that in context. Diana makes some really wild looking bug eyed faces in that performance (which she often did in those days until the Motown charm school made her stop that). But by their 1966 appearance that is also on this disc, the rough edges are off and they are excellent performers (check out Mary Wilson doing the monkey)!

The Godfather (JB, not MB) does his famous cape routine and as always is filled with excitement. The Temptations are also quite good (they perform "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" without the Supremems and still sound great) and watch Ed Sullivan, the king of uncool, try to dance like the Tempts and the Four Tops. It adds to the fun. Oh yeah, Stevie and Smokey are along for the fun, too.

Overall, since so little video exists of great Soul performers in their prime, it's very valuable and fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Motown Shows Ever!!!!.......2004-05-28

This DVD brought back so many memories for my family. We sat in front of the TV like back in the day when we used to wait for The Ed Sullivan Show to come on every Sunday night. This was one of the best entertainment that I have seen in a very long time.

The Jackson 5, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Little Steve Wonder, James Brown & The Rightous Brothers.

This is a must see, must buy DVD of all times.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest stars of Motown sing on the "Ed Sullivan Show".......2003-06-24

"The Ed Sullivan Show" was an American television institution that was on every Sunday night from 1948 to 1971. For an hour a homely newspaper columnist with awkward gestures and an idiosyncratic way of speaking that everyone in the country could imitate brought an incredible array of entertainment into the living rooms of the nation. Within a single broadcast we would see classical ballet and Broadway showgirls, slapstick comedy and scenes from Shakespeare, and grand opera along with rock 'n' roll. That last one is the focus of "Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics," the third volume of which focuses on the great stars of Motown and "The Soul of the Motor City."

There are three "episodes" of "Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics" on this DVD but there is no attempt to come up with thematic differences despite the titles; the Supremes, the Temptations, and the Jackson 5 appear in all three. But these do provide a way of telling you what you get to see and hear on this DVD:

"Motortown Review": Smokey Robinson & the Miralces, "Doggone Right"; The Supremes, "Love is Like an Itching in My Heart"; Diana Ross & The Supremes, "Love Child"; The Jackson 5, "I Wonder Who's Loving Her Now?"; Stevie Wonder, "You've Met Your Match"; and The Temptations, "I'm Going to Make You Love Me."

"The Sweet Sound of Soul": The Supremes, "Come See About Me"; The Jackson 5, "ABC" and "I Want You Back"; James Brown, "Prisoner of Love"; The Righteous Brothers, "Turn On Your Love Light"; The Temptations, "Run Away Child, Running Wild"; and the Four Tops, "Reach Out and I'll Be There."

"Motor City Magic": The Temptations, "Get Ready"; Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, "I Second That Emotion"; Stevie Wonder, "For Once In My Life"; Four Tops, "Reach Out," "Sugar Pie," and "Bernadette"; The Jackson 5, "I Want You Back"; and The Supremes, "In And Out of Love."

The extras for this DVD consist of a trivia track that keeps a constant stream of information flowing across the screen during the songs. The introductions to each song provide a modest sense of music appreciation for the time (e.g., the importance of "Run Away Child, Running Wild" as the advent of social consciousness in Motown). Although Berry Gordy, Jr. is mentioned as the founder of Motown in 1959, it is clearly Smokey Robinson who gets the credit for being a one man hit machine who wrote, produced, performed, and scouted new talent. Given that we are talking the 1960s, well before the birth of the music video and MTV, "The Soul of the Motor City" remains a nice historical artifact for videos of live performances of some of Motown's biggest hits by most of its biggest stars.

A great concept: The Beatles appeared four times on CBS' The Ed Sullivan Show, and while one is tempted to skip through this collection to watch only the Fab Four's 20 performances, there is historic value in seeing Sullivan's complete programs. With America reeling from the murder of a popular president, JFK, less than three months prior, the Beatles' Sullivan debut on February 9, 1964, ushered a renewing joy into the country's living rooms. The band kept it up another two weeks, sharing Sullivan's variety-show bills with the likes of impressionist Frank Gorshin, comedians Allen & Rossi, future Monkee Davy Jones (in a scene from Oliver!), and sundry unrepentant vaudevillians, magicians, and acrobats. Various problems with microphones and bad direction (one barely sees John Lennon on 2/9) couldn't stop the magic, and by the time the Beatles made a return trip in September 1965, the group's brilliance and wit outsized their television surroundings. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Really Big Shoe - the BEATLES!.......2007-06-25

Ed Sullivan, variety television host notorious for saying "shoe" instead of show was the man who brought the Beatles to American television. Viewers are treated to the February 9 and 16th 1964 viewings of the Beatles, newly arrived in America regaling their audience with songs such as "She Loves You," "Twist & Shout," "Please Please Me" and other early hits. (The Beatles were filmed on February 9, 1964 and their act was divided among the following week). As a bonus treat, you get to see artists who shared the hour with the Beatles and you see the Beatles do a special show in Miami for Ed Sullivan, filmed on February 17, 1964. The Fabs engage in some fun banter and the best part was when they harmonized the beautiful classic, "This Boy." I just LOVE that!

For the 1965 video, you get the other acts as you do on the 1964 disc. You see the other artists who shared billing with the Beatles. You get to see Soupy Sales acting a fool in 1965 with his campy, hilariously funny song, "The Mouse." On the show filmed August 14, 1965 and aired September 12, 1965 you are treated to "Help!," "Act Naturally," "I Feel Fine," "Ticket to Ride" and George introducing Paul, who does a solo of "Yesterday." Fans are at no loss for a Beatle cornucopia of treats with this set.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable for Beatle Fans and TV Buffs.......2007-04-03

On September 12th 1965, I remember being allowed to stay up for the entire Ed Sullivan show so I could see my idol, Soupy Sales. I was five mind you. My tastes have changed of course, and I no longer want to "Do the Mouse in my house". While I was waiting for my love, Soupy to appear, I vaguely remember those Beatles. Of course I already knew about them as it had been 19 months since the Fabs had first entered our lives. I remember being facinated by their hair and clothes, and performance. Even as a five year old I could easily hear how different their music sounded. It sounded almost odd with it's chord changes, major and minor melodies, and Paul's screamer,"I'm Down". But odd in a wonderful way. But I was really just sitting through it all just to see Soupy. I also thought, here they are again, because the Beatles seemed to be everywhere and you just got used to that.
This is a fantastic 2 DVD set. Four hours of the four Sullivan shows that featured the Beatles. It includes the other acts as well and all of the commercials! If you are old enough, you will get de ja vu,because those commercials really went into the long term memory without us knowing it. Most of the other acts are only interesting the first time you see them, after that you will probably just want to skip to the Beatles. But the four entire uncut shows are here, complete with great sound and picture. Beautifully restored. The audience shots are facinating for their historical value. The Miami show from Feb. 16, 1964 is really nice. It's funny because for one number John and Paul's mics are adjusted so low that they both have to squat down to sing! They don't let this bother them of course, and just soldier on. Professionalism like this is so rare today in young performers. I guess that's why Sullivan was so impressed with them calling them "four of the nicest young kids to ever appear on our stage",and "a group of fine professional singers and performers". Indeed they were. If you are studying the Beatles, or you just like them, this DVD is an absolute must. No Beatle fan should be without it. I rank it up there with the Anthology DVD set, it's that good. Amazon's marketplace price is incredibaly low also. Almost too good to be true, but happliy, it is. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL! Especially..........2006-11-12

The Pillsbury commercials! as I am only 13, I didnt really no who was who but Cilla Black was wonderful! My Aunt bought this just for me because I liked the Beatles, but i ended up LOVING the rest! Very entertaining. I watched all of it within a night, but it did leave me hanging and thirsty for more! High quality, but I would also really suggest the Anthology(DVD),too, because it also shows a few clips of them on the show. A LOVELY PIECE OF WORK!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia Trip!!.......2005-09-25

I was 7 when I watched these shows. Great memories. And Soupy Sales is an added bonus!! Just amazing how things have changed...
Not sure if this set will appeal to the younger crowd, but for us aging baby boomers it's a fun trip.

5 out of 5 stars The Fab 4 Conquer America!.......2005-02-28

These shows are excellent capsules of the early 60's, featuring not just The Beatles, but Davy Jones (part of the Oliver! cast), Frank Gorshin (whom I remember better as "The Riddler" on Batman), Soupy Sales, Cab Calloway, etc.

The point of sale, is of course, the 20 performances by The Beatles, presented in very good shape here (as opposed to the numerous copies of copies boots and chopped specials). The sound and pictures being from a 4-decade old videotape are better than expected, and kudos to whoever did the mastering.

In other reviews, the other acts get panned, but they are good as well, Sullivan wasn't just a vaudeville rehash. Part of the problem with seeing the comedians, etc. now is that you need to know about the people being referred to (such as Allen and Rossi's bits with Sonny Liston and LBJ).

Overall, well worth the price of admission for these trips back to 1964 and 1965.

With a total of 144 songs (including repeats) and well over 500 minutes of playing time, this massive boxed set, whose nine discs each contain between 12 and 19 performances, truly is, as host Ed Sullivan famously said, "a really big show." With some 20 songs between them, the two most important rock acts of the 20th century, Elvis Presley and the Beatles, both of whom received huge career boosts from the Sullivan show (garnering a reported 80 percent audience share and 70 million viewers, respectively), are well represented; so are other genres, like Motown and '60s rock. And wonderful, galvanizing performances by, among others, the Jackson Five (especially "the little fella in front," as Sullivan calls Michael), the Animals, James Brown, Janis Joplin, Jackie Wilson, the Rolling Stones, and even the Association ("Along Comes Mary") are enough to counter the curious inclusion of the Brooklyn Bridge, Jay and the Techniques, and other obscure minor talents.

Still, the boxed set (whose DVD bonus features include "trivia tracks" and limited discographies) has serious flaws. Audio and video (color and black and white) are good, but far too many songs are repeated (the Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" appears twice on the same disc!), while others are obviously truncated; and there's no excuse for programming two songs each by the likes of Dino, Desi and Billy, and Freddie and the Dreamers. In the end, the good music saves the day, but the set's drawbacks keep Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics from being an essential purchase. --Sam Graham

We are very pleased with the way the set has been digitally reproduced and presented, well worth the money for all those wonderfull memories.

5 out of 5 stars Can't live without.......2006-02-11

So many DVDs, so many performances! I still haven't checked out all of them yet. A must-have for artists, musicians, and anyone who appreciates and wants to re-live the music of the 60's.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Disappointment.......2005-12-30

Imagine my delight when I got this set for Christmas! But the anticipation was far better than the reality. Granted the performances were great. However, the old question of what is Rock 'n' Roll burns brightly!

I'm old enough to have lived through the years represented on this set, and recall seeing many of the broadcasts. I am also old enough to recall that we called James Brown,The Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops and The Jackson Five, "Soul" music not Rock n Roll.

I have three main gripes...
Why nine discs??
Why all the repetition?
Where's the rest of the real Rock acts?? Far too much Motown!

There are lots of great vintage Rock n Roll DVDs available please see and buy, The Music Scene and Hullabaloo sets everyone a winner!

If any DVD companies happen to read this in future please put Rock acts together and Soul acts together. Each is to be treasured but there are a lot of us who see Rock and Roll and want the Beatles, Stones, Herman's Hermits, Doors etc. I would be happy to buy a Soul R&B Sullivan Box Set!! I love Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Little Anthony and especially Smokey Robinson but not served with my Billy J Kramer.

Lets not confuse the issue...or re-issue. You wouldn't mix Buck Owens or Tammy Wynette into this set so why combine Rock & Soul?

God Bless Ed...let's see more, just packaged better.

4 out of 5 stars A great trip back in time.......2004-12-13

First the negatives,as other reviewers have pointed out:Too much repetition, this could have easily been a 5 or 6 disc set and the fact many of the songs are heavily edited. That said, I did enjoy this package..a wide variety of music including shows devoted to Elvis, the Supremes and the Temptations..by shows I mean the half hour syndicated shows that make up this collection.I enjoyed the background information along with the historical clips and the narration by Jay Thomas..same guy from Murphy Brown and Cheers and a very good disc jockey. This is probably the most comprehensive music set put together and those Sullivan intros are priceless. He once forgot the Supremes name and said "here are the girls!" There are a lot of great artists represted and goes back to 1955 right through the end of the show in 1971/The asking price is a bit steepbut if you can find it for under $100..go for it. A better rock and roll time capsule you won t find.

4 out of 5 stars Good Set.......2004-08-30

I love the Ed Sullivan Show, and these DVDs bring you the greatest rock acts of all time - all in one place! In this excellent 9-DVD package, you will find Elvis, the Beatles, the Doors, the Rolling Stones and many more. Yes, some songs repeat throughout the set, and yes, the discs are a little too short, but I'm willing to overlook that and enjoy my favorite rock acts again and again. Now it's your turn.

Seventeen performances by some of the many pop and rock acts who appeared on Ed Sullivan's variety show during its heyday are on display in this, the second of the Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics boxed set's nine discs. "Chart Toppers, Volume 2" is somewhat short on star power; Smith, Oliver, Spanky and Our Gang, and the Brooklyn Bridge aren't exactly household names, then or now. But there are some interesting oddities here as well, such as the Beach Boys appearing without Brian Wilson for "Do It Again" and Karen Carpenter playing drums on the exquisite "We've Only Just Begun." As is the case elsewhere in the boxed set, some songs appear to have been edited for length, and the frequent lip-syncing (or singing live to prerecorded tracks) is a drag. But what may be the weakest disc of the box still packs enough appeal to make it worth checking out. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars ED SULLIVAN VOL 2 ROCK AND ROLL HITS.......2002-10-03

Please see my comments on Volumn 1 because the same holds true here. A wonderful set of great old time rock and roll but at a ...price from the price gougers....Rhino Video. How can they justify [$$$] (suggest list) for only 60 minutes of entertainment. Look at Fox Video who have released classic TV shows in complete sets of 24 episodes for an entire season for just [$$$]. That is 9 hours of entertainment for about #10 to [$$$] over what Rhino is charging for one hour. I hope everyone who buys this edition or the complete set takes time to write to Rhino and complain about their price gouging. There is no excuse....they could have combined set 1 & 2 on a single disc and at [$$$] it would have been a fair price. Hey, if they have a liscense to release the Ed Sullivan Shows they have the ability to offer all kinds of sets....Rock & Roll, Comedy Classics, Holiday Classics, Great Performers, etc. There in no reason to get greedy with their first offering.
