Sure, everyone's seen The Sound of Music, but how about Flower Drum Song? Or State Fair, either the 1945 version (a remake of a 1933 nonmusical) or the 1962 re-remake with Bobby Darin, Ann-Margret, and Pat Boone? Rodgers & Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies is a comprehensive and entertaining 97-minute documentary surveying the film career of the beloved songwriting team and how their screen work was interwoven with their stage work. (State Fair was written directly for the screen before they began adapting their stage shows for film.) Host Shirley Jones (the ingenue in both Oklahoma! and Carousel) provides numerous trivia tidbits on most of the films, while segments on The King and I, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music are presented by those who appeared in them: Rita Moreno (Tuptim), Nancy Kwan (Linda Low), and Charmian Carr (Liesl), respectively. Also of interest will be original casting possibilities (James Dean in Oklahoma!, Marlon Brando in Carousel), rarely seen outtakes, live television performances, and clips from films that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein's shows (including Rex Harrison as the king of Siam). Because Rodgers and Hammerstein's films were deeply involved in the development of widescreen techniques such as CinemaScope, this documentary is savvy enough to present its clips in letterboxed widescreen format, but that footage is occasionally grainy. Unfortunately, The Sound of Movies was filmed in 1995, four years before the release of sumptuous remasterings of six of these featured films. --David Horiuchi

Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!

4 out of 5 stars A great bargain.......2007-05-16

This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.

This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23

Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Anthology is 10 hours of pure joy for anyone who likes the Beatles. Just sit back, watch, listen and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Thing You Could Have on The Beatles.......2007-04-04

If you never buy anything else pertaining to the Beatles, you must have this one DVD boxed set and the book that goes with it.Amazon's price is unbeatable,by the way. This is about 10 hours of complete Beatles history. The best pictures, concert footage, sound, etc.than any other Beatles DVD.This set is so superbly put together that it takes your breath away.I can't describe it.Just buy it and you will know what I mean.My favorite parts?Well everything, but the rare TV footage is priceless. The Shea Stadium concert is in gorgeous color and quite a lot of it is included. The EMI studio chat both for the early years and the White album is fantastic!Yeah, two sections where you hear nothing but snippits of conversation from the studio.Loved it.There's the boys' promo films for Paperback Writer and Rain. This is rare stuff and it's all here.Nothing is left out.It spans the years 1940-1970 just to give you an idea of the gargantuan tome you will be enjoying.Plus a bonus DVD which is facinating.Oh how could I forget?!There is a lot of concert footage also;ie,France in 1965 not '64,Blackpool Night Out from June 1965,and other marvelous concert footage.I'm a little annoyed about one reviewer who entitled his review "McCartney Grudge"and went on to say that Paul somehow fixed it so that John was edited out of the press conferences.Oh yeah, big bad Paul took the time out to do this. He also had time to wash everyone's cars in the parking lot and shampoo their dogs too.But he wouldn't wash Yoko's car.Whatever.Also one person noted George's discomfort being around Paul during the commentary. That's funny, because I saw Paul biting his nails and choosing his words very carefully whenever he was with the other two. It's no wonder since everything is always big bad Paul's fault.Enough already. If Paul McCartney ruffled George's feathers it's only because Paul was in his own little world in the studio. His only concern was making perfect music. The music he heard in his head. And John wasn't exactly sleeping either. If Paul stepped on some toes,oh well. The guy was a pop genious, a modern day Mozart. So was John for that matter.Geniouses always have volitile personalities, and they are usually perfectionists too.And thank God for that! Now we can sit back and enjoy the results of that genious every time we play a Beatles record.Anyway this DVD is the only one you need in your collection, but if you love the Beatles as much as I do you will want more.

A guilty, guilty pleasure, perhaps not one a left-wing feminist should be admitting to in public. Female boomers should recall yearly TV reruns of this Rodgers and Hammerstein production, featuring such delights as "Impossible" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" It may appear a bit stark to younger viewers, but part of the charm of this 1964 network TV special, a remake of the live 1957 telecast originally built around Julie Andrews, is its utter simplicity. An extremely young Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon (of General Hospital fame) are joined by Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, and Celeste Holm. Warren is all sweetness and innocence without a hint of saccharine artificiality, while Damon is a clear-eyed romantic. This very handsome love story is a bit of an oddity, but worth owning just for the memorable score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

It's nice reading about people's memories of this production-like so many, my sister and myself grew up looking forward to watching "Cinderella" on CBS. In college, I knew that if conversation topics ran short on dates, just mentioning this production to the woman in question would bring a flood of memories. Everybody, but everybody remembered it with love. It's still treasurable. But I cannot recommend the DVD edition. The VHS edition was fine-the overture and closing credit music was flown in from the stereo album master (nice, although it accounts for the "glitch" at the closing that one reviewer mentioned-the album take was different so the music did not match exactly). The picture was fine-definitely better than the Mary Martin version of "Peter Pan." (The master tape of that production was destroyed by an incompetent video tech. and what survives is a composite of five backup copies.) The laser disc was even better. But the DVD has a horrible "enhanced" stereo soundtrack that is all echo. The picture is very soft. I've seen all the video editions of this title plus a presentation in NYC before the first video was released-trust me, it looks and sounds far better than this. Until they remaster this, enjoy the laser version, if you can!

Outgoing (as of 2007) British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a onetime rock musician and promoter, once said that if he could sing like Paul Rodgers, he might never have entered politics. Whether that would have been music's gain and Parliament's loss is debatable, but Live in Glasgow is further evidence that Rodgers is a worthy role model. While he went on to stardom and the commercial big time with Bad Company and the Firm (with Jimmy Page), and more recently fronted the re-constituted Queen in Freddie Mercury's stead (a strange pairing that worked well nonetheless), many would argue that Rodgers' best band was his first: Free, the late '60s-early '70s blues-rock quartet that was a model of spare soul combined with a melodic pop sensibility, with Rogers' vocals leading the way. Rodgers apparently agrees; no less than nine songs in this 80-minute concert are drawn from the Free catalogue, including not only their one big hit, "All Right Now," but also a number of more obscure but still excellent tunes like "Wishing Well," "I'll Be Creepin'," and "Be My Friend." His band, too, does a pretty decent job of reviving the Free spirit; guitarist Howard Leese, formerly of Heart, fairly channels the late Paul Kossoff on several solos, albeit with less restraint. There are four songs from the Bad Company era ("Can't Get Enough" and "Feel Like Makin' Love" are among them, natch) and just one, "Radioactive," from the Firm (probably no coincidence, as that band was neither Page's nor Rodgers' finest moment). But this is all about the singer, who, if anything, has improved with age. Rodgers can belt the blues, but never goes overboard; he can deliver plenty of grit and passion, but has an appealing tender side as well. And "Warboys," the one new song featured here, indicates that while Tony Blair may be done, Paul Rodgers is still a ways from the end of the road. --Sam Graham

Description

His resume reads like a rock fan's wildest dream: frontman and main songwriter for FREE (founded with the late guitarist Paul Kossoff), BAD COMPANY, THE FIRM, SOLO & QUEEN. Paul Rodgers has been electrifying audiences since he hit #1 with his worldwide hit "All Right Now" co-written with Free. After six years with FREE, Rodgers formed BAD COMPANY with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. As the main songwriters they wrote all of the platinum records and #1 hits. While moving forward as a solo artist he took a slight detour and formed THE FIRM with LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page. He then continued as a solo artist and received a Grammy Nomination for his "Muddy Water Blues" CD on which he wrote the title track. In 2005 he joined forces with QUEEN and toured worldwide at QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS performing songs from both of their catalogues. He is currently proceeding on two fronts with QUEEN and as a solo artist. In '07, he will play ten exclusive US dates this spring and one summer date in Holland. For a man who prefers to keep a low profile, his talent still shines brightly.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Rock Singer.......2007-06-15

I watched this DVD in amazement. I have seen Paul Rodgers quite a bit on the last few years and every time I hear him sing, it gives me chills. What a voice, what soul! There is none better.

Since he's moved to Canada, he does mostly Bad Co stuff on tour. This DVD has much more Free material, which I absolutely love. The tempo isn't quite the Free "groove and burn", it's a little too fast, but what a great rendition. The Free songs are magical.

Somehow the Bad Co tunes (particularly Feel Like Makin Love) sound a bit thin, but are still adequate. One misses Mick Ralphs crunching chords here.

The sound and production are superb. There are no special effects here. Just Paul Rodgers singing and playing his heart out with a tight band.

You do miss Koss, Fraser and Kirke from time-to-time in the Free tunes, particularly in "I'm the mover". But the band creates its own path thru the songs, and it is very enjoyable.

If you like flawless singing with a terrific band playing blues/rock, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD of an amazing singer-guitarist-pianist.......2007-06-04

Paul Rodgers is the best voice in rock today. Of all the 1960s and 1970s singers, his voice has been preserved the most. It's almost magical how great he sounds in concert these days.
This DVD is amazing. I am the biggest Free fan on earth, and in theory, it's hard for me to watch other musicians play Free's music, but Rodgers' solo band does a respectful, inspired job. The always dependable Howard Leese (from Heart; now with Rodgers since the early or mid-1990s) fires off great, tasteful solos without ever aping or making fun of the late great Paul Kossoff. Rodgers' solo bassist here, a classically trained violinist, does great fretwork on the five-string bass (he has hovercraft feet though - the boy can't stand still. ha.) Collective Soul's drummer is the one behind the kit here, and despite a week's worth of practice (and jetlag), he is great. Fans of Free, Bad Company, The Firm and all of Rodgers' solo efforts should pick this DVD up. The sound is fantastic - levels remain the same, instead of that annoying "dip and peak" level setting that plagues other concert DVDs. This disc will NOT disappoint.

Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-03

The disc opens with Free's I'll Be Creepin and first comes the drummer, then bass, then each of the two guitarists enter and join in. First, Heart's Howard Leese and then 17 year old Kurtis Denglar. Denglar's sound blew me away. Then Rodgers enters the stages and with the first line of, "if you're trying to screw me baby..." you know it's going to be an unbelievable show.

Rodgers is flawless and I hope I look as fit as he does when I'm nearing 60 years old (I don't look that good now). The band is excellent, especially Leese and Denglar's solos. I only wish they included my favorite Bad Company song Rock Steady and let Denglar play the opening riffs.

The song selection is heavy on Free material but that's fine because we have In Concert: Merchants of Cool for the Bad Company stuff so it's great seeing the underappreciated Free songs get new life. The essential Free are all pretty much here, Alright Now, Wishing Well, the Stealer, the Hunter, Ride a Pony, Be My Friend, I'm a Mover and my favorite Fire and Water. Once you this DVD and are interested in seeing the original Free you need to get Free Forever.

Finally, another thing I loved about this show is that's about the music (sorry for the cliche) but it's five guys in jeans just playing music. There some very effective basic lighting and no fancy graphic or elaborate stage production. The band is a bunch of guys I could relate to, no over abundance of tatoos or piercings (if any). Just great music.

Keep it going Paul. You're the best and lets get a new cd out soon. We need more classic music from you. You can count on my advanced order as soon as it's available.

5 out of 5 stars A great pair of musical talents take you back to a simpler time.......2007-06-14

This is the long awaited boxed set of four Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland musicals that includes a fifth bonus disc. The contents are as follows as described by a press release from Warner Home Video:

Babes in Arms (1939)
This is the first film the two did together and was adapted from the 1937 Rodgers and Hart Broadway hit of the same name. Busby Berkeley directed the film and also did the choreography. This film is being shown as it was in its initial release in 1939, complete with the minstrel numbers that might seem offensive today and a sequence involving the impersonation of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt that was cut shortly after FDR's death since MGM didn't want to appear disrespectful under the circumstances. The plot is simple - Rooney plays a kid trying to prove his musical talent and therefore decides to put on a show. Garland plays another talented youngster who decides to help him do it.
DVD Special Features:
Introduction by Mickey Rooney
Commentary by historian John Fricke
Vintage Our Gang short Duel Personalities
Classic cartoon The Mad Maestro
1939 Newsreel with Mickey and Judy
Audio-only bonuses:
Leo Is on the Air radio promo
3 different radio shows with Rooney and Garland
Theatrical Trailer

Strike up the Band (1940)
This one has more of a plot than the first, plus some great music. Rooney plays self-involved musician Jimmy Conners who impresses bandleader Paul Whiteman so much that he offers him a job in New York City. However, a friend's medical emergency makes Rooney choose between his own plans and his friend's health, and he chooses his friend in the end. Rooney's character now has to come up with a way to replace the travel money. Busby Berkeley again provides the choreography and the direction in this film. Highlights include a big Busbv Berkeley production number called "Do The La Conga" and Rooney's "Drummer Boy" sequence. The film also features the Oscar-nominated song "Our Love Affair" and a rousing finale with the Gershwins' title tune.
DVD Special Features:
Introduction by Mickey Rooney
Pete Smith specialty comedy short Wedding Bills
Classic cartoon Romeo in Rhythm
"Do the La Conga" stereo remix version
Audio-only bonuses:
Leo Is on the Air radio promo
Millions for Defense radio special with Mickey and Judy

Babes on Broadway (1941)
Rooney plays Tommy Williams, a singer in a restaurant who wants a shot at Broadway. Garland plays Penny Morris, and Williams uses her interest in orphaned children to come up with the idea of "putting on a show" to send them on a vacation in the country. However, Williams really is only interested in self-promoting his talent, not the orphans. However, in the end, he learns his lesson. Musical highlights include the song "How About You', Rooney's impersonation of Carmen Miranda, and a massive Busby Berkeley finale which was featured in 1974's "That's Entertainment!".
DVD Special Features:

Classic cartoon Dance of the Weed
Audio-only bonuses:

Girl Crazy (1943)
This is the strongest of the four included films. This time Norman Taurog shares direction duties with Busby Berkeley. Here Rooney plays Danny Churchill, a rich college kid that is partying more than he is studying. His father sends him to an all-male college in the middle of nowhere where he can regain his focus. However, Danny does fall for the one eligible female in the hundred mile radius of the school - the dean's granddaughter, Ginger Gray (Garland). Ginger, however, is more concerned that the college is in danger of closing than in Danny's advances. She enlists Danny's help to see that the school stays open. Songs include "Embraceable You," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Bidin' My Time," and a the Garland solo "But Not for Me." Of course there is a huge Busby Berkeley finale done to Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm", with Mickey, Judy, a large supporting cast, and Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra.
DVD Special Features:
Introduction by Mickey Rooney
Commentary by historian John Fricke
Vintage short Hollywood Daredevils
Classic cartoon The Early Bird Dood It
I Got Rhythm stereo remix version
Audio-only bonus: Bronco Busters Outtake

The bottom line on this set is that if you are looking for "Gone with the Wind" level serious drama and you don't like great music look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for charming escapist musical entertainment, these films fit the bill. After all, they were made so that troubled audiences could get away from it all during troubled times - the pre and early World War II era. Plus it looks like Warner Home Video has continued their "Film School in a Box" tradition with this set that I have grown to like so much.

With its high-intensity plot about an attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle, the bestselling novel by Frederick Forsyth was a prime candidate for screen adaptation. Director Fred Zinnemann brought his veteran skills to bear on what has become a timeless classic of screen suspense. Not to be confused with the later remake The Jackal starring Bruce Willis (which shamelessly embraced all the bombast that Zinnemann so wisely avoided), this 1973 thriller opts for lethal elegance and low-key tenacity in the form of the Jackal, the suave assassin played with consummate British coolness by Edward Fox. He's a killer of the highest order, a master of disguise and international elusiveness, and this riveting film follows his path to de Gaulle with an intense, straightforward documentary style. Perhaps one of the last great films from a bygone age of pure, down-to-basics suspense (and a kind of debonair European alternative to the American grittiness of The French Connection), The Day of the Jackal is a cat-and-mouse thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat until its brilliantly executed final scene (pardon the pun), by which time Fox has achieved cinematic immortality as one of the screen's most memorable killers. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like The Original.......2007-06-15

What a great film. It's thoroughly enjoyable to watch the incredible lengths that the film's heroes and anti-heroes go through to achieve their objectives. And more impressive is the film's precise relevance today, in our age of terrorism, even though it was released 35 years ago. An eerie tale, to say the least.

The cast is superb from top to bottom, and the director and editors deftly let you into the minds of both the Jackal and the Inspector ... keeping you fully engaged with each one's strategies and skills.

5 out of 5 stars The Day of the Jackal.......2007-06-08

This is a great movie, it keeps you on the edge of your seat!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent spy thriller!.......2007-05-03

A very unassuming, yet highly intelligent, French investigator is put to a true test of mind games when a skilled killer is hired to assassinate President Charles De Gualle (Adrien Cayla-Legrand). Edward Fox plays a very slippery assassin who stays one step ahead of the French Police. A fast-paced spy thriller that is well made.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic. One of the best of its kind........2007-04-02

The Day of the Jackal is one of the best action-suspense films ever made! It's nothing short of brilliant and it's something of a hidden treasure. Movie buffs know the movie but, sadly, it doesn't get the sort of mainstream recognition of even a mediocre thriller like The Fugitive for instance.

What's fantastic about Jackal is that it works within the realm of possibility. The Jackal, a British contract killer hired by the OAS to assassinate Charles De Gaulle, is cunning, effective, sharp, but human; not the near super-human killers of movies of the last 20 or so years.

The drama builds and never relents. This is an extraordinary feat considering that the assassin's target is a real historical figure who was never assassinated.

All the main characters were terrifically portrayed. If there is a shortfall, it is that the French characters have British accents. This detracted a bit from the realism. It's a minor criticism, one that is all but swallowed by the strengths of the movie.

This is a must see. Even if you're not a fan of the so-called "spy fiction" genre, you'll enjoy the intrigue, suspense or, in the least, all the wonderful shots of Italy and France.

5 out of 5 stars 1963 France.......2007-03-15

This movie is a top notch, tense political thriller, set in the era of Charles de Gaulle's ruled France of the early 1960's.

The fine British actor Edward Fox brilliantly portrays the cold hearted hired assassin called 'the Jackal' by the French police.

Michel Lonsdale as 'Lebel' is superb, as is Alan Badel as 'The Minister', coupled with Michel Auclair playing the part of 'Colonel Rolland'. The rest of the cast is equally casted, all doing a great job.

This movie is very realistic.

The French Citroën DS, Charles de Gaulle's official head-of-state automobile, is an additional 'actor' in this picture.

We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.

We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.

If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.

Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. And no worries about inappropriate materials - this is good wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

4 out of 5 stars A Collection of Great Musical Dramas.......2007-05-14

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation has released this boxed set containing six of their film musicals, each of which comes with a second disc of bonus archival material and documentaries elaborating on the shows. The extra content varies: For example, in Carousel, the film of Liliom, the book on which the R&H show is based is included in its entirety. The bonus discs are themselves compelling viewing, especially prior to watching the main feature, which could be at a later stage because it could be too long to do both in one sitting; besides, these are the great masterpieces of the American Musical Theatre and Drama, although State Fair was first a film, and transferrred onto the stage more recently, and posthumously for the authors.

The stage and film musicals that Richard Rodgers, music, and Oscar Hammerstein II, lyrics, collaborated on, in both cases later in their careers, are the greatest of musical dramas to be found.

It makes revisiting these shows all the more interesting. These are the CinemaScope 55 versions. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection [Remastered] (The Sound of Music / The King and I / Oklahoma! / South Pacific / State Fair / Carousel)

5 out of 5 stars A Joyous Viewing Experience.......2007-05-13

The quality and beauty of the productions was first rate. My wife and I have enjoyed them all thoroughly and we will view them over and over again. Thank you for making them available.

Rarely has The Merchant of Venice, one of Shakespeare's most complex plays, looked as ravishingly sumptuous as in this adaptation, directed by Michael Radford (Il Postino). In a decadent version of renaissance Venice, a young nobleman named Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes, Shakespeare in Love) seeks to woo the lovely Portia (newcomer Lynn Collins), but lacks the money to travel to her estate. He seeks support from his friend, the merchant Antonio (Jeremy Irons, Reversal of Fortune); Antonio's fortune is tied up in sea ventures, so the merchant offers to borrow money from a Jewish moneylender, Shylock (Al Pacino, Dog Day Afternoon). But Shylock holds a grudge against Antonio, who has routinely treated the Jew with contempt, and demands that if the debt is not repaid in three months, the price will be a pound of Antonio's flesh.

The Merchant of Venice is famous as a "problem play"--the gritty matters of moneylending and anti-Semitism sit uncomfortably beside the fairy tale elements of Portia and Bassanio's romance, and some twists of the plot can seem arbitrary or even cruel. The strength of Radford's intelligent and passionate interpretation is that he and the excellent cast invest the play's opposing facets with full emotional weight, thus making every question the play raises acute and inescapable. Irons is particularly compelling; kindness and blind prejudice sit side by side in his breast, rendering the clashes in his character as vivid as those in the play itself. --Bret Fetzer

More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) is a crass, loud American. Laurence Jameson (Michael Caine) is a suave, urbane European. Their common ground is that they both are confidence men, and they meet in a train compartment as Benson is scamming his way across Europe, taking advantage of women's generosity. The two are forced into a rivalry, which culminates in a wager to see who can be the first to bilk $50,000 out of American heiress Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly). Their game of one-upmanship is, of course, brought to ridiculous heights as things progress. Written by Paul Henning (the mind behind such TV shows as Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is an uneven but funny mix of Martin's physical comedy and Caine's oily charms. Martin's first role as cohort is to assume the persona of Ruprecht, the "special" younger brother intended to scare off potential brides. As Ruprecht, he comes off as a cross between The Andy Griffith Show's Ernest T. Bass and Jerry Lewis; hilarious as it is, it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the film. Once the wager is on, though, Martin slips into his overly earnest mode as an American military man suffering from hysterical paralysis, with Caine as a psychologist who takes on his case. All in all, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a loose remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story with David Niven and Marlon Brando) is a droll, intelligent comedy, short on knee slappers but long on comic situations and characterizations. --Jerry Renshaw

        Description

One's got a sophisticated, suave and debonair con act. The other's got...well, an act. Together, Steve Martin and Michael Caine are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and they're absolutely ruining the Riviera in this "hilarious battle of wits and double-crosses" (Boxoffice) that "couldn't be more delightful" (The Wall Street Journal)! Martin is Freddy Benson, a smalltime conman sleazing his way through Europe on whatever handouts he can scam. Caine is Lawrence Jamieson, an impeccably dressed and high-minded artiste who thinks Freddy is giving himand all con mena bad name. At first, Lawrence agrees to help Freddy spruce up his talents and his wardrobe. But when it becomes apparent that the Riviera isn't big enough for the both of them, they make awinner-take-all wager over the fortunes of a naive American soap heiress (Glenne Headly): the firstone to "clean her out" can make the other clear outand keep the Riviera and its unsuspecting tourists to himself!
