Y2K: Practical Solutions for Home Preparedness, also billed as Year 2000 Crossroads: Proceed with Caution, is not as slick as some of the other year-2000-problem videos on the market, but it is one of the most levelheaded, informative, and nonalarmist ones available. The idea here is to plainly give you the information you need to successfully survive any difficulties that may arise from Y2K problems. The 60-minute video begins, in a mercifully brief manner, exploring "how did we get here?" Then it provides a "snapshot" of all the problems that may arise: blackout, communication failure, transportation disruption, breakdown of emergency services. The critical issues are then dealt with: power, water, food, and communications. Paloma O'Riley is the cofounder of the Cassandra Project, a nonprofit foundation that specializes in the Y2K problem. We eavesdrop as she lectures to a class on how to assess what your problems may be and how to prepare for them using basic ideas that you may not have thought of, for example, make a list of all the things that run on electricity. You may not realize that your gas heater could depend on electricity, so you need to prepare another heat source--it will be the middle of winter for half of the world. Pros and cons of different heating methods are given. O'Riley then discusses everything from water, what to put in your expanded pantry, how to cook, how to take care of your pets, health emergencies, financial preparedness, and more. Checklists are periodically displayed on the screen, giving you step-by-step instructions. If you know what the Y2K problem is, and you're looking for a video that will actually help you to prepare without instilling fear into you and your family, this is the one for you. --Jenny Brown
