Paul Newman gives one of the defining performances of his career, and cemented his place as a beautiful-rebel screen icon playing the stubbornly tough and independent title character in Cool Hand Luke. And before he became familiar as a sidekick in 1970s disaster movies (Earthquake and the Airport movies), George Kennedy won an Oscar for playing Dragline, the brutal chain-gang boss who tries to beat loner Luke's cool out of him. It's a classic rebel-against-the-repressive-institution story in the line of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest or The Shawshank Redemption. Certain moments have become classics--particularly the hardboiled egg-eating contest, and the immortal line (drooled by Strother Martin, as a sadistic redneck prison officer), "What we have here is a failure to communicate." And don't forget, Luke is also the source of the oft-quoted driving ditty, "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I have my plastic Jesus, right here on the dashboard of my car..." He is cool, all right. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen and digital stereo. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Cool Hand Luke.......2007-06-27

"Luke" is a work that transformed Newman from movie star to anti-authoritarian folk hero. Clearly the actor was attracted to the dispossessed, in life and in film. His Luke is two things at once: a loser whose drunkenness lands him on a chain gang, but also a tough individualist equipped with personal courage and a defiant spirit. Top-notch support comes from Martin as Luke's wormy nemesis, and Kennedy, who won an Oscar for his turn as Luke's loyal pal, Dragline.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Newman Masterpiece!.......2007-06-23

If you haven't seen this film yet, by all means, go out and rent it today! Hell, you might as well purchase it, because it is definitely worth every penny and I promise you won't regret it. It is a true classic and a movie you will want to see over and over again. God knows I must have viewed this one at least a dozen times now. The acting, directing, writing, score, etc... is top notch. Am I the only person out there who constantly poses this question - WHY DONT THEY MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANYMORE? Then again, there has never been, nor will there ever be, an actor quite like Paul Newman. And if ever there was a role in which Newman was born to play, this was it! Seriously folks, could you even imagine another actor playing the part of Luke? It's definitely one of his finest performances ever. The man has charm oozing out of every pore in his body.

Along with the outstanding, understated work of Mr. Newman, this film also contains several wonderful performances by a fine supporting cast - George Kennedy (Best Supporting Actor Winner as Dragline), Strother Martin, Robert Donner, Morgan Woodward, Wayne Rogers, Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper and Jo Van Fleet as Luke's mother Arletta. By the way, the scene in which Luke confronts his dying mother Arletta is one of my favorites of all-time. It redefines the word POIGNANT and I can almost guaranty it will melt your heart.

There are so many famous lines and scenes in this movie that make this film completely unforgettable. I have yet to meet one person (male or female) that didn't thoroughly enjoy this film from begining to end. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat. I still remember the first time I saw this film and how much I enjoyed it. In fact, the very next day I went to the video store (sorry Amazon, you weren't around yet) and immediately purchased it. Trust me folks, this is one EXCEPTIONAL film.

Finally, I think we sometimes forget just how many classic films Paul Newman has been in - "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Hustler", "Hud", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Sting", "Abscence of Malice", "The Verdict", "The Color of Money", "Nobody's Fool", etc... etc... etc... The man is a living legend and one hell of a good human being to boot! At 82 years old, he just announced his retirement from acting. I don't know about the rest of you out there, but I for one feel like I am losing an old, dear friend.

5 out of 5 stars A must see.......2007-05-15

This is by far one of the greatest movies of all times. Paul Newman is amazing, the ultimate rebel. Who else would cut the heads off parking meters because "Small town, not much to do in the evenin."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies ever.......2007-05-13

This is a must see and must own movie. Any movie lover has to have this movie in their collection. The shipping was fast and I am totally satisfied with my purchase. BUY THIS MOVIE!!!

Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good, and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Based on a true story, this is the comedic saga of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the Winter Olympics. With few resources and virtually no clue about winter sports, it's an uphill course for this troupe from the tropics who are sliding on thin ice as they go for the gold in Calgary, Canada. Refusing to let anything stand in their way, these four Jamaicans enlist the help of a down-and-out ex-champion American slider named Irv. Unavoidably drawn back to a sport he had come to loathe, Irv is faced with coaching a team of complete novices. But once committed, he is determined to turn them around and to somehow right the wrongs of his own failed career. It's a bumpy ride but with pride, determination, and dignity, the bobsledders make their impossible dreams come true.

It's amazing the whole family love it. It's entertaining and the kids love it too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-02-02

My family has loved this movie for years. The comedy is wholesome and clean, but still extremely funny. One of my favorite movies of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Ya man!!!.......2006-10-25

What a great comedy this is. The humour it has is timeless and gives you some really heartfelt laughs.

Most of all what an important message it has in this dope infested world of sports! This film in a masterful way shows that what matters is not the victory but just being there and participating. These movie should be shown to the kids that participate in sports in all schools colleges academies . Not to leave out the parents that sometimes push their kids in an unreasonable way.

Finally this movie shows in a very eloquent way that regardless of what your circumstances are you can fulfil any goal you set and pursue in an elaborate way.

Really clean family entertainment with John Cndy in one of his best roles. I highly recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, heartwarming...truly one of my all time favorite films..........2006-09-28

`Cool Runnings' is one of those movies I can watch over and over again and never get sick of it. Based on a true story that is both touching and inspirational, Jon Turteltaub does a magnificent job of infusing enough humor and wit into this script to make it one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen. The story is about a young group of Jamaicans who are vying for a way to the Olympics. Derice Bannock (Leon) has dreamed of running in the Olympics all his life. His father was a famous Olympic runner and he dreamed of doing the same. Junior Bevil (Lewis) lives under the strict watch of his wealthy father who humors Junior's fantasy about running in the Olympics but doesn't wholeheartedly support it. And then we have Yul Brenner (Yoba) who lacks a good education but makes up for that with brute strength and arrogance. On the day of the tryouts Junior takes a fall and trips up Yul and Derice ending all of their chances to make it to the Olympics.

That is until they meet Irving Blitzer (Candy), an ex-bobsledder who knew Derice's father when they were in the Olympics together. Irving had always believed that runners would make the best Bobsled team and now he had the opportunity to try that out. With the help of Sanka Coffie (Doug E. Doug) they form the first Jamaican Bobsled team and head off to Canada to compete.

They are met with serious scrutiny, not only because they are Jamaican but also because their coach, Irv, is hated among the Olympic community. Irving was disqualified back in his Olympic days for hiding weights in the front of a sled to make it go faster, thus disqualifying, and humiliating his country, his teammates and his coach. Thus, they don't like him very much and because of that the Jamaicans have to work extra hard to make an impression. The film has plenty of funny scenes but it also has plenty of heart and by the end of the movie you'll be wiping away the tears and pushing through with a smile. They don't make many movies like this one, so when they do we need to grab them and never let go. `Cool Runnings' is definitely a one of a kind film, a film that's entertaining and suitable for the whole family, and one that any DVD library would be incomplete without!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, inspiring movie.......2006-04-07

I just love Cool Runnings, it's the funniest and most heartwarming comedy I know, I'm glad I own it on DVD because I have watched it many times, and every time it makes me laugh and I have to admit I usually shed a few tears at the end because it is so moving. And it's a great family movie - I even know 2-year-olds who watched it and enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars Way COOL Bill !.......2007-06-18

We laughed till we cried. Bill Engvall is so easy to relate to, the Thunderbird jet segment just blew us away, we laugh just thinking about this DVD, we know many people that are 15 degrees off cool and sometimes so are we, Engvall is so funny!!!! THANKS for a million laughs.....

4 out of 5 stars cool.......2007-06-04

Bill Engvall has been around for a long time and has produced some very funny CDs/DVDs. This is also great but not quite as good as previous efforts. Maybe Bill is a bit tired - what with movies, TV shows etc. Still worth buying however.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Engvall: 15 degrees off Cool.......2007-05-17

Bill's comedy routine is top-notch as usual. It seems as though I am watching my life revealed. Hilarious!!

5 out of 5 stars A Hysterical Good Time!.......2007-04-14

Being somewhat of a fan of Blue Collar Comedy Tour, I decided to focus on Bill Engvall. I rented this DVD, not sure if I would like it. Well, here's my opinion: It started off pretty slow, but right around the middle of it, Engvall really became a riot. I loved everything about this DVD-the special features were great; I loved the behind the scenes feature on Bill's "Thunderbirds" segment. The Delta Farce trailer was hilaious-I'll be seeing that! But what topped it off for the special features was the bonus "Here's Your Sign" track.
Basically, if you like Engvall or just Blue Collar in general, this is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Starts out pretty good and then gets really funny.......2007-04-03

I enjoy Bill Engvall's humor and bought this DVD because of it. The first half or so of the routine was the Engvall I hoped for...funny and presenting his somewhat eccentric take on life to which many (most?) of us can relate. Then came the bits that gave the concert its name;;;"15° Off Cool." As he went on about never quite being cool and his efforts to attain coolness, I started laughing harder and harder. It got to the point where my jaw was hurting from the laughter. That material is easily the funniest Engvall I've seen or heard, which is saying a lot!

Queen Latifah demonstrates her loose, easy charm in Last Holiday, a remake of the 1950 comedy with Alec Guinness. Though at first glance it's hard to imagine anyone less like Alec Guinness than Queen Latifah, they both communicate a world of inner thought with nothing more than a sly sideways glance. Georgia Byrd (Latifah), a department store employee, leads a life of frustrated desires--particularly for a bashful salesman from the outdoor furnishings department (LL Cool J, Deep Blue Sea). But when she learns she only has a few weeks left to live, Georgia gathers her money, quits her job, and flies to a swank European resort she's always dreamed of visiting. Naturally, her new carelessness with money and fearless candor lead everyone around her--including her senator (Giancarlo Esposito, Do The Right Thing) and her former boss (Timothy Hutton, Ordinary People)--to think she's a mover and shaker. Last Holiday unfolds the way you expect it to (dozens of movies and TV shows have similar plots), but Latifah and the capable cast keep it alive. Also featuring Alicia Witt (The Upside of Anger), Jane Adams (Happiness), and the ever-dependable Gerard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac) as a passionate chef. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "It's a Wonderful Life" Light ..........2007-07-06

The synopsis ...
Georgia Byrd - a lonely, hard working, church going wallflower from Louisiana - is diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder, and is told that she has three weeks to live. In response to the devastating news, she quits her dead-end job, liquidates her savings (in order to "blow it"), takes a five-star trip to Czechoslovakia to meet a chef she deeply admires, and is determined to live every remaining moment of her short life to the fullest. In the process, she gracefully touches the lives of some contemptible people in desperate need of a few rude awakenings.

The critique ...
I am sorry to say that before watching the Special Features, I did not realize that "Last Holiday" was a remake of a 1950s film of the same name. I have not seen the original Alec Guinness film (though I now plan to), and therefore, cannot compare the two. So, I will simply give my opinion on this more contemporary version of the film.

I enjoyed the movie enough to purchase it and add it to my DVD collection, but it isn't Oscar winning material, by any means. The plot is predictable (as are most romantic comedy plots) and somewhat follows in the footsteps of the more classic holiday, life-changing films "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street" (though it isn't quite in the same league). At times, the physical comedy can be a bit clichéd and/or over-the-top; but not nearly enough to discourage you from watching the film. If you're a fan of romantic comedies with a fairy tale twist, you will most likely find that you enjoy "Last Holiday". (Note to parents: This film can be shared with your family. My nine-year old son enjoyed it immensely.)

The casting was well done, especially in Queen Latifah's role of Georgia Byrd (who was an excellent choice for a wallflower turned larger than life) and Gérard Depardieu's part as Chef Didier (whose timing and attitude was spot on). The supporting cast did a fairly decent job as well; Alicia Witt as Ms. Burns and Giancarlo Esposito as Senator Dillings, giving the most notable performances. The only questionable cast member was Timothy Hutton (playing the despicable "Super-Mart Mogul", Matthew Kragen). Normally, I'm an enthusiastic fan of Hutton's, but his egotistical personality seemed painfully forced, and you don't get to see any of his more characteristic talent until the closing scenes - where he is allowed to be more himself than the part, and therefore, is given the chance to end his performance with admirable sincerity. Fans of the HBO series, "Big Love", may be tickled with Matt Ross' (the show's wonderfully wicked Alby Grant) short, but sweet performance as Mr. Adamian; and, fans of the Food Network may enjoy the Emeril cameos.

The DVD ...
The Special Features are, unfortunately, barely worth a mention. The three short "making of" productions are dry and unenthusiastic.

"Packing Light", a piece about how and why the cast and some of their respective scenes came to be, nearly put me to sleep.

"Last Look", a piece about the overall look of the film (scene, set design, color pallets, and costumes) was the most entertaining of the three, and was only a wee bit more interesting than "Packing Light".

And, "23 Years in the Making" extracted a "You've got to be kidding me," response.

There are two Food Network recipes included on the disc (one - "Bananas Foster" - having not even been in the film), and you've also got your standard theatrical trailer, previews and deleted scenes. **Warning ** for fans of deleted scenes: There are only two deleted scenes included, neither of which are anything spectacular.

In short, this is a DVD that you buy for the film alone.

5 out of 5 stars A great example set by Queen Latifah.......2007-07-04

She has outdone herself in this movie. Her character is so pure of heart and wonderful that you long to meet her in person. This movie is almost completely free of smut, which is rare in modern movies. If everyone behaved like Georgia, the world would be a lovely place.

2 out of 5 stars An indulgent whine fest for promoters of the welfare state.......2007-06-25

A woman is diagnosed with a brain tumor that, left untreated, will result in her death within 3-4 weeks. Her company, owned by an Evil White Guy, runs a company clinic that gave the diagnosis, and her HMO plan denies her the coverage for surgery, dumping several thick volumes of protest procedures on her should she choose to file a grievance.

So, resigned to her fate, Georgia Byrd decides to cash out her IRA and savings bonds, and squander her life savings by spending her last days living the high life. This from a woman who laments the no-show Senator who promised to come to her church to promote a yet-unfunded revitalization project for her economically depressed community. Georgia calls her sister and tries to tell her what is happening, but sister is a bit ditzy and has her hands full with 3 kids, and the phone call ends prematurely without Georgia having a chance to tell her that she is dying.

Georgia takes off for an exotic European destination, planning to stay at a 5-star hotel and enjoying privileged living for her remaining days. She stays in the $4,000-a-night Presidential Suite, buys herself a new wardrobe suitable to this new high-living, orders every special on the menu at the five-star restaurant, takes in a multitude of spa treatments, and pursues lessons in snowboarding and base jumping. Of course, she catches the attention of several high-profile guests who are intrigued with this big-spending mystery woman, one of whom is the Evil White Guy who owns the company she worked for; another is the senator who stood up her church, and left unfulfilled promises to her hometown community.

Meanwhile, Georgia blows off her church family, her sister and nieces and nephews, and a young neighbor boy whom she befriended. No doubt all of them would want to comfort and love her through her remaining days, a role of which Georgia is inexplicably determined to rob them. Worse, she chooses to squander a small fortune pursuing the most frivolous ending possible of her previously unremarkable life. It's a little hard to work up much sympathy for the argument that the taxpayers of this country have an obligation to bail out her economically depressed community, while she thinks nothing of throwing away perhaps $100,000 or more of her own money so she can "live" before she dies. I know that money wouldn't have rebuilt her community, but it could have provided scholarships for her nieces, nephews, and her young neighbor. Communities aren't saved by the government; it is the willingness to take care of our own that makes or breaks our communities.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely a touching movie.......2007-06-23

I have just finished watching "Last Holiday" a few days ago and I find it a very enjoyable movie to watch. I have to admit that I'm a big fan Queen Latifah since I watched "The taxi" in which she starred in 2 years ago. She is just an excellent actress and her performance is definitely sensational. We usually see her more in action movies, which involved fighting and violence. This touched movie, however, is totally different in that it surely will move your heart and take your tears. Queen Latifah, in this movie, portraits a character named Georgia, an employee working at a retail store, who possesses a natural ability of cooking. She's keeping a book called "Possiblity book", in which she keeps all the possible goals she wants to reach. However, life doesnt' go as smoothly as she expects. In one morning day at work, she unfortunately hits her head into the top cabinet and has to go to a doctor for a CAT scan. Then she has been told that she has a "tumor" and just has 30 days to live. Realizing how short her life is, she brings all the money and flies to Czechoslovakia to enjoy her life. ......
I don't wanna say it all out. For those who didn't watch, I fully recommend this worthy movie because it will help you understand that life is not about regret, working, earning money, but life is about enjoying what you have before it's gone.

5 out of 5 stars Queen Latifah is funny as usual.... .......2007-06-17

Last Holiday is a delightful movie. It's warm, funny, and sincere. The European countryside is also a treat to view.

Queen Latifah plays a character by the name of Georgia Byrd. Georgia is a shy and mild mannered woman that has a natural ability to cook as if she went to culinary arts school. Georgia keeps a "Possibilities" book...things that are all possible to her, but due to her mild manneredness, she only dreams of what life could be for herself. She is soon diagnosed with only three weeks to live and she decides to shed her mild mannered side to go out and experience life. This is when the real delightful part of the movie shines through.

The supporting cast is also great to watch. This is definitely one of these movies that could be purchased for your home DVD collection.

Halloween is one of the great modern horror films, but as a franchise its track record has been spotty at best, painfully bad at worst. Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later, directed by horror vet Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, House), won't displace John Carpenter's original but it might help you forget the films in between. Miner certainly has: the film begins as if sequels 3 through 6 never happened. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role for the first time in almost two decades) faked her death and is now a single mom and headmistress of an exclusive California private school. She's also a secret alcoholic who lives in fear of her homicidal brother-bogeyman Michael Myers. Guess who decides to show up for a family reunion? The film begins with classic horror-movie exposition (the deserted college campus, Michael's escape, Laurie's waking nightmares) accomplished with some humor and style, but it's all setup for the second half, a driving roller coaster of stalk-and-slash thrills. There's little of the self-conscious genre referencing of Scream and at times the film is a little far-fetched--it is a slasher movie about a knife-wielding homicidal maniac who won't stay dead, after all--but Curtis transforms Laurie from a shrieking victim into an empowered, determined horror-movie heroine who's learned a thing or two from the previous films. Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, and TV cutie Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek) costar, and the script received uncredited polish from Scream writer Kevin Williamson; Curtis's mom, Janet Leigh, pops up in a cameo. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars AT LAST A SEQUEL WORTH WATCHING!.......2007-06-04

This entry into the halloween series is probably about as good as it is gonna get! After two really really bad installments(parts 5 and 6) we get a pretty darn good sequel "Halloween H20". The best thing about the movie is that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and it makes all the difference. I still don't understand why they keep changing Michael's mask? It looked great in the first movie...why fix what ain't broke? This movie is really a 3 and 1/2 star movie, but they don't have that option. The DVD transfer is good, but I would like to see a 16X9 upgrade someday.

4 out of 5 stars Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film that made her a star.......2007-05-20

In HALLOWEEN H20, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film franchise which made her a star. This is probably the best entry since "Halloween II", in terms of performances and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back as terrorised Laurie Strode. To properly enjoy this film, you have to disregard the 4th, 5th, and 6th films which featured Laurie's daughter, Jamie Lloyd. There is no daughter here, instead we have Laurie's son John (played by Josh Hartnett).

The film picks up 20 years to the day of the original Haddonfield slayings. With a new name and persona, Laurie Strode is the headmistress of a private school in Southern California, yet still living with the daily terror of her past literally coming back to haunt her. Sadistic, unstoppable Michael Myers has tracked down her records and decides a little family reunion is needed, but this time, Laurie vows to ensure it will be the final showdown...

Jamie Lee Curtis perfectly slips back into the role of Laurie, and the rest of the cast is equally fine, including Jamie's legendary mother (Janet Leigh, "Psycho") in a fun cameo as the school receptionist, Josh Hartnett as her son, and Adam Arkin as her boyfriend. There are some brilliant set-ups and action scenes, and the tension is taut.

HALLOWEEN H20 originally set out to close the chapter on Laurie and Michael, but the franchise has continued with "Halloween: Resurrection", again with Jamie Lee Curtis.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween H20-TwentyYears Later-Zsendsational movie-still.......2007-05-15

The cast of actors-charactors blend in so well with suspense-its just unbelievable. Ms.Jamie Lee Curtis and the cameo appearance of her mother working together is very nice to see-and historical (Ms. Lana Turner was in the orginial movie of the notorious thriller, "PSYCHO") and her appearance really contribute to the suspense to the movie-Halloween H20. And seeing LL Cool J acting, WOW! Mr. LL Cool J is a multi-talented performer-he can do it all! I just love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm not who you think I am." Halloween: H20 - 20 Years Later.......2007-05-13

In 1998, Director Steve Minor put his stamp on the Halloween series. This is the entry, the sequel everyone was looking forward to, the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and when Laurie and Michael see each other again. "I'm not who you think I am." is exactly right, it truely is a great sequel even though it is part 7.

Laurie has a 17 year old son and she is the headmistress of a secluded private boarding school. 20 years after he first attacked her he came back, she thinks her son is the one in danger, he is, but she has more to fear than her son's life. Laurie stops running and faces her fear in the most amazing ending the series has ever seen.

Note that this movie completely ignores parts 3-6 so continuity for this entry as part of the series is completely screwed up. The acting is extra ordinary in this entry, the best acting in the entire series comes from this entry. Jamie gives her strongest performance as Lauries in this entry. And unlike the previous two entries Michael is top notch in this entry, Michael is really scary.

This entry doesn't suffer from much asside from giving LL Cool J a role this entry soars on all levels. The ending where she attempts to grab his hand is the most emotional part of the series.

The bonus feature "Unmasking the Horror" is very informative, but again, Jamie sounds like an idiot in her interviews and everyone else sounds smarter than her which is the exact opposite as on film where she appears to be the smartest person on screen.

In conclusion, this is the definitive ending to one of the longest running horror series. This entry has an A list cast and some great scares. Too bad the series continued on and on and on...

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2007-04-12

I liked it! While nothing can top John Carpenter's original Halloween -- sequels and remakes almost always fall short of our expectations -- H20 is suspensful and good, and the musical score includes a variation of John Carpenter's classic, errie theme as a reminder. Jamie Lee Curtis brings class and authenticity to the film, which is almost as scary as the original Halloween. The film's vibe succeeds without too much gratutious sex and gore, and keeps you on the edge until the end. I agree with the other reviewers who didn't like the other cheap sequels after Halloween II ... they just didn't have the same vibe as the first two films with Jamie Lee. This one is a worthy addition to anyone's Halloween collection.

For every TV-into-movie success like The Fugitive, there are dozens of uninspired films like The Mod Squad. Happily--and surprisingly--this breezy update of the seminal '70s jiggle show falls into the first category, with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore (who also produced), and Lucy Liu starring as the hair-tossing, fashion-setting, kung fu-fighting trio employed by the mysterious Charlie (voiced by the original Charlie, John Forsythe). When a high-tech programmer (Sam Rockwell) is kidnapped, the angels seek out the suspects, with the daffy Bosley (Bill Murray in a casting coup) in tow. A happy, cornball popcorn flick, Charlie's Angels is played for laughs with plenty of ribbing references to the old TV show as well as modern caper films like Mission: Impossible. McG, a music video director making his feature film debut (usually a death warrant for a movie's integrity), infuses the film with plenty of Matrix-style combat pyrotechnics, and the result is the first successful all-American Hong Kong-style action flick. Plenty of movies boast a New Age feminism that has their stars touting their sexuality while being their own women, but unlike something as obnoxious as Coyote Ugly, Angels succeeds with a positive spin on Girl Power for the new millennium (Diaz especially sizzles in her role of crack super agent/airhead blonde). From the send-up of the TV show's credit sequence to the outtakes over the end credits, Charlie's Angels is a delight. --Doug Thomas

Description

They're beautiful, they're brilliant and they work for Charlie. This is a sexy, high-octane update of the popular hit show, Natalie (Cameron Diaz), Dylan (Drew Barrymore) and Alex (Lucy Liu), alongside faithful lieutenant Bosley (Bill Murray), must foil an elaborate murder-revenge plot that could not only destroy individual privacy and corporate security worldwide, but spell the end of Charlie and his Angels.

3 out of 5 stars Unbelievable stupid !!!.......2007-01-28

Nice moves, nice girls, nice... what? Stupid flat jokes all around the movie.

I've seen many bad films over the years. I've also seen a few which have been made solely for financial success, without any creative ambition. Charlie's Angels is possibly the worst film i've ever seen.

It never actually seems to kick in. All we have is a montage of clips that don't seem to be in any particular order, all with countless short cutting techniques. McG seems to have forgotten that he is no longr making a pop video, and he has churned out a pop video of over 1 and a half hours. Was it to give the film a modern look? The only thing is succeeds in doing is making it appear over stylised and very self concious of the fact that it was going nowhere

A film with over 18 writers and 30 separate drafts of the script does not sound good from the start. Then there was the fact no ending was agreed upon when shooting started. What on earth were Columbia thinking? I can't understand why they hired McG, who has made such a disasterous start to his movie career, that he is being hailed as the worst director of all time. He simplified the already simple premise of the television series. He made every angel the same, and they were reduced to just being a smiling bunch of assets. It is ridiculous that Diaz, Barrymore and Liu agreed, and Barrymore even owned the rights. At the height of their careers, why did they choose to make such a shallow and degrading film towards women.

Bosworth is reduced to being the angels pimp. We may expect to have a few laughs from Bill Murray, well to be honest, we don't. I have rarely seem a film without one single redeeming feature to remember in hindsight. I can't think of one positive to take from Charlie's Angels. A bunch of big egos, and ridiculous ideas combined have made a shambles.

It would have been easy to make a happy and cheery movie from the subject matter, true it would not have been groundbreaking, but it is nearly impossible to make such a catastrophy from such a likable premise. Every teenage boys wet dream must surely have become their nightmare. Let's not even start on the sequel

3 out of 5 stars Silly Sexy Fun.......2007-01-19

I did not expect much when i put this DVD in the player and found myself surprised. No, this was not a great film by any means, but it was it silly, sexy fun. If you don't take it serious you are in for an ok 90 minutes.

Once again, Cameron Diaz shows why she is one of the hottest females in film. Her charecter is silly and comes off as a "dumb blonde", but she is oh so easy on the eyes.

3 out of 5 stars three and a half stars.......2007-01-13

Since dts doesn't play on all dvd players, and this disc automatically starts as dts, I have to remember to change it, which isn't convenient. I think that it is pathetic, and shouldn't be like this. But otherwise, the features are good, and so was the price, but I honestly think that the second one was better. B+

5 out of 5 stars The Angels are "RED HOT!".......2007-01-10

Charlies Angels out does its sequel Full Throttle what they should have done was cut it off with the first movie. The main characters Diaz, Berrymore, Lu are drop dead sexy plot makes sense, the dialoge is a little cheezy but remains witty and funny, the villans are sudutive and creepy, Bill Murrey is a great Bosely (I hope that's spelled right), the effects are fantastic, and the sound is great.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie if you're a misandrist.......2006-07-25

Lets see...in about the first five minutes:

1. A male flight attendant shows himself to be a total jerk
2. A male terrorist is easily overpowered by a woman wearing a mask
3. A male drill seargeant is knocked out cold with a single punch by a woman
4. A man is told by a woman that he's not fit for sex, and then promptly commits suicide

Notice a pattern here?

This movie is so misandrist* it makes Thelma and Louise look positively pro-male.

"So what? It's just a movie," you say? Well consider a movie that consistently put down and ridiculed women. Would that be okay? How about a movie that put down black people, unrelentingly portraying them as brutes, weaklings and mental deficients. Would that be okay? After all, it's "just entertainment."

Any guy who thinks this is a swell movie is too stupid to realize he's being insulted.

Description

Bill Evans was one of the most popular piano players in modern jazz, having recorded over 50 albums and received 31 Grammy nominations before his untimely death in 1980. He influenced virturally every jazz pianist who came after him including Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. Very little is available on DVD of Evans in performance. The 2 concerts on this DVD have never been on the market before, and this DVD will be a must have with his legion of fans.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Early and late Evans.......2007-06-13

This may be the best concert DVD of Bill Evans out there. As such, Evans lovers will be relieved to know that it is quite a good snapshot of two distinct phases of his career. The '66 concert has a young Evans playing a restrained but beautiful set with a young Eddie Gomez on bass and an unknown but relaxed drummer Alex Riel. The sound, although mono is well balanced and clean. The piano sound in particular is crystalline and bell like, ie an accurate rendering of the Evans golden touch. The camera work is spare and for the most part, unobtrusive.

In contrast, the 1980 show has surprisingly poor sound. The bass is the dominant instrument, the piano being too far back and the drums muddy and indistinct. The camera work is sloppy and brash, deliberately going for a distracting "artsy" shot of red light reflected off the cymbals, not once but several times. Ahh, but the performance-that is another story.

This concert was shot about a month before Bill's death, and as anyone who has heard his last concerts at the Keystone knows, Bill was playing...well, as if his life depended on it. This is in stark contrast to his conservative performance of 1966.

Evans' evolution as an artist can be traced in a steady arc. Rather than reinvent himself like a Picasso (or closer to home,), a Miles Davis, Evans chose to build upon his earlier concepts, stretching and developing his areas of interests over the course of his brief life. We are given perfect example of this evolution in the two contrasting version of Nardis, a vehicle Evans played throughout his career. On the one hand, the '66 version is brief, spare and controlled, swinging to be sure, but contained. However, the 1980 version begins with a long rhapsodic solo exposition that would have Franz Liszt gaping in amazement at its sheer virtuosity. But behind the masterful pianism lies Evans the modernist- his harmonic and rhythmic structures have deepened. In this intro one can hear the evolution of 20th century music. Evans absorbed everything he heard and incorporated what he liked into his playing. One can hear echoes of Debussy, Bartok and Stravinsky, while at the same time the influences of McCoy Tyner and and Chick Corea are evident. To say that Bill had big ears is an understatement. Yet amidst this sea of influences, the Evans voice is clearly heard.

This was Evan's last trio, and by his own admission probably the best trio he had put together since he had worked with the late Scott LaFaro. Certainly Marc Johnson was the right bass player for the job. An agile and intuitive player with a skill for deep listening and a fat, warm sound, Johnson could often anticipate Bill's lines and get right in there with him, playing counterpoint or underlining a melody without stepping on the music. And Joe LaBarbara was a solid powerhouse, playing with sticks and hitting hard, generating the energy needed to support this later high octane Evans. Pity we can barely hear his ride cymbals here.

This is a must have for Evans' fans and so far the best video document of this important figure in the evolution of jazz. There is simply no jazz pianist after Bill who has not in some way been influenced by this humble giant. This DVD captures him doing what he did best and should not be missed. The bonus interview at the end of the 1980 concert makes for interesting viewing as well.

Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional DVD.......2007-05-24

Fourteen years separate the two concerts that comprise pianist Bill Evans' extraordinary DVD "The Oslo Concerts."

The 1966 performance is more representative of the Bill Evans etched in the public mind. Demure and timid in his demeanor, Evans delivers his pieces in the same elegant and intellectual style that distinguished his "Kind of Blue" sessions with Miles Davis seven years earlier. He hovers over the keys like an impassive medium, channeling equal parts of Bud Powell and Claude Debussy into exceptionally beautiful renditions of "Very Early," "If You Could See Me Now," and "Nardis." It's the quintessential statement of "cool jazz." Unfortunately, the trio doesn't deliver in equal measure. Bassist Eddie Gomez proves to be an able accompanist, but his frenetic solos, for all their dexterity and flair, tend to be disruptive and extraneous.

The 1980 performance shows a much-transformed Bill Evans, both physically and aesthetically. He's freer and more experimental in his interpretations, and his trio is better integrated and more supportive of his vision. Evans stated that the 1980 trio--consisting of Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums--was the best since his landmark trio of the early sixties featuring Scott LeFaro and Paul Motian. Johnson seems a fitting successor to LeFaro, delivering sustained, legato lines that underpin Evans' artistry and help better articulate his statements. LaBarbera's drumming rousts Evans out of the self-absorption that distinguishes the 1966 sessions. Evans listens to and interacts with his fellow musicians to the end that the score is less scripted and more fluid. "Nardis" is once again the centerpiece, and contrasting the two versions on the DVD are a testament to Evans' maturation as an artist.

This DVD belongs in the library of any jazz lover. Seeing Evans practice his craft greatly expands our appreciation of his sublime artistry.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2007-05-19

If you already love modern jazz, you'll smile. And, if you already love Bill Evans, you've got a piece of audio and visual history to enjoy from both 1966 and his last year. He gave the jazz trio a new character and he gave jazz itself, a new vocabulary. He played classical piano music between performances and devoted himself to the lyric beauty of jazz. Excellent price and better than expected audio reproduction.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-04-07

Camera work and audio are excellent in both, though the bright lights of the 1980 concert occasionally overwhelm. I wish "Stella" and "Autumn Leaves" had gone much longer. Alex Riel is excellent, but I've always loved drummers who understand brushes, and he reminds me of Paul Motian, a sort of quiet storm. Eddie Gomez may be a little flashy, but his command of the instrument is amazing. Marc Johnson's tone is deep and dark, but this may be related to his use of the contact mike-pickup, as opposed to the standard microphone used by Gomez in 1960. For me Joe LaBarbera's drumming is less inspired than the brush work of Riel, but one could also make the case that the more powerful sound of sticks increases the energy level appropriately.
Which brings me to the playing of Bill Evans. It is the definition of modern jazz, and in my estimation is the highest art of the second half of the poor old 20th century. It is not necessary to view Evans work in terms of what was to come later, because later developments may be good or bad. Evans' work is a world, a universe. The product of a supremely musical mind. It is nothing less than a miracle that one can "own" the art of Bach, Mozart or Bill Evans for less than the cost of a tank of gas. If you want to hear, and see, the best, here it is.

With a voracious trio of mako sharks wreaking havoc, Deep Blue Sea dares to up the ante on Jaws, but director Renny Harlin trades the nuanced suspense of Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster for the trickery of the digital age. In other words, why build genuine terror when you can show ill-fated humans getting torn into bloody chunks? The aforementioned makos have been lab rats in an effort to harvest a miracle cure for Alzheimer's disease from the brains of sharks, but the research has an unfortunate side effect: the sharks get smarter, and they're determined to break out of Aquatica, the deep-sea complex where they've been penned.

Model-actress Saffron Burrows plays the researcher; Thomas Jane pulls double-duty as shark expert and action hunk; Samuel L. Jackson's the corporate sponsor who chooses the worst time for an Aquatica tour; and rapper LL Cool J is nicely cast as Aquatica's cook and comic relief. Michael Rapaport, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Stellan Skarsgård round out the cast, most of whom are turned into shark food as the makos turn Aquatica into a floating junkyard. Harlin takes devilish pleasure in providing sudden, unexpected shocks--no small feat in such a derivative thriller--and as a series of action set-pieces, Deep Blue Sea never disappoints. It's inevitable that Burrows should end up in her underwear like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but even then the movie offers a credible reason for the strip-down; that Deep Blue Sea can be simultaneously ridiculous and sensible is just another one of its shlocky charms. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars It's no "Jaws", but it has TEETH just the same!.......2007-07-05

Amazon's review and product description say enough about the film, so need to repeat it here. The storyline has enough to make you suspend your disbelief so that you can enjoy this underwater rollercoaster ride. The acting is better than most in this genre and by actors we grow to like and understand. Thomas Jane (Dreamcatcher), the film's hunky hero, looks incredibly like Christopher Lambert of Highlander fame and is very convincing in his role. For you folks who like fun facts, he is currently married to Patricia Arquette of TV's Medium. Model and sometimes actress Saffron Burrows is surprisingly believable as the driven scientist who is motivated by noble reasons, saving people from Alzeimer's Disease, but who will sacrifice everything and everyone to do it. Michael Rapport, The 6th Day and Men of Honor, and Samuel L. Jackson (do I really need to list his credits????? --lol), offer very solid support as does the comic relief of LL Cool J.

Renny Harlin, no stranger to the action genre with hits like Die Hard 2 - Die Harder and Cliffhanger, keeps the pace exhilarating and managers to offer thrilling surprises in a somewhat tired genre. In addition, the effects are impressive although obviously CGI. The music is appropriate and even the absence of music at key moments enhances the suspenseful elements within the film when an over-the-top, pulse-pounding score might have been employed.

While any shark film will inevitably be compared to Steven Spielberg's Jaws, this one should be judged on its own merits without that cumbersome comparison. This is a fun, somewhat sci-fi, action film. It doesn't take itself too seriously; therefore, we shouldn't either. This is plain, old-fashioned, popcorn fun.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid!.......2007-05-31

This movie is so unbelivably bad, I have to force myself to even watch it 5 minutes!

The movie is obviously set up for a disaster, you have the building which looks very high tech, but once the sharks get mean there's like no place to hide and no weapon to defend yourself with.
It will collaps if too much pressure on it. Helicopters can't land when it's a storm outside. It's highly explosive. The doors can't keep sharks out.
The whole building just screams "You will die here!", it destroys the feeling of the movie.

And the characters... couldn't they have chosen a worse heroine?
Our "lovely heroine" has the emotions of a psycho-maniac-serial killer, she dosen't care if people die because of her, she dosen't care they die in front of her, she only cares about her stupid experiment.
If I would have been in the movie, I would have pushed her into the water and let the sharks eat her!!
I was so mad when she was portrayed as innocent.
Another character also annoyed me, she sees her husband die in front of her eyes - and she dosen't care!
Only later she shouts "No!" and that's it.

Where is the emotion in this movie?
There's only dialog, talk about god and faith, bad jokes and sharks that are supposed to be super-smart, but instead appear super-dumb.

3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT JAWS BUT IT'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD!.......2007-04-08

This is one of those movies that you think will really be bad. It turns out is a pretty good little thriller with some sci-fi thrown in. The biggest weakness is that the sharks don't always look that realistic. I am a hugh fan of Jaws and this is not in the same league, but it does deliver the goods.

3 out of 5 stars omg!.......2007-04-05

if your kids like horror flicks they will enjoy it. It's just an updated version of jaws.

3 out of 5 stars nothing new here(hence three stars), but for reasons beyond mt control I like this cheesy hyped up B-movie.......2007-03-29

If you have read any of my reviews before you know that sometimes I can find cheesy movies of any kind fun to watch(Deep Star Six, The Being, and The Green Slime come to mind),so the fact that this silly shark thriller is one i like to watch shouldn't surprise anyone. It tries so hard to scare you and has some very well done action that it most of the time rises above some plot holes and lapses in logic.
In the middle of nowhere(of course) a research lab at sea is looking to find a cure for Alzheimer's and they are using shark's brains to test and get the cure. Problem is (as it always is in these movies) the lead Scientist is doing the mad Doctor thing and messing with nature(but looking stunning doing so) and before you know it, you get a shark with Albert Einstein's brain and the Hulks rage. Can you say "chum and get it"(sorry had to use that pun). Throw in a storm and let the lab start to sink, and you have human tar-tar and lots of action.
Like I said I don't know why, but if you are in the mood this one isn't going to tax the brain, but it is a great way to kill a rainy afternoon.

Creepy, tense, and enigmatic, Renny Harlin's Mindhunters is a grisly cross between Agatha Christie's whodunit classic And Then There Were None and Jonathan Demme's horrifying The Silence of the Lambs. An interesting ensemble cast, including Christian Slater (Windtalkers), Jonny Lee Miller (Melinda and Melinda), L.L. Cool J (Harlin's Deep Blue Sea), and Kathryn Morris (television's Cold Case) portray promising FBI profilers-in-training. Val Kilmer plays their ambiguous instructor putting the candidates through their paces and leaving them for a weekend on a spooky island, where those who survive a terrifying exercise--penetrating the mind of a serial killer via elaborate clues--will go to the head of the class. The rules change, however, when the students themselves turn out to be victims, bumped off one after another, the survivors half-mad with suspicion and paranoia that the murderer is one of their own. The film's concept is sound even if the execution (so to speak) gets out of hand with problems of logic. Among other things, none of these characters could possibly find time to pull off some of the psychopath's more complicated killing rituals. Quibbles aside, however, Mindhunters is particularly watchable if one is in the mood for a movie that plays mind games. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Mind Games.......2007-06-26

Spoiler Alert. Yes well hard to tell you anything at all without giving away a little about the movie. A group of a half dozen FBI agents are landed on a military training island for a profiling exercise over the weekend. There is an agent along for the ride that is watching their instructors methods of training. Now throw in a clever killer with deadly traps in their midst. A killer that somehow got onto a military installation that is far from the mainland. Eliminate their means to call for help until the helicopter returns on Monday. So a training mission becomes one of survival. Can they figure out who is responsible before they are all dead? Sound familiar? Have you seen "Ten Little Indians" or "And Then There Were None"? This story seems very similar to the Agatha Christie book and subsequent movies.

I had seen this a couple years ago and thought it was good. Now that I go back and revisit it I've decided it has stood the test of time and remained good. It was quite entertaining to see it again. The cast is recognizable, in fact some fairly well known. The outcome however is not what I would call predictable, well sure we all know almost everyone is going to die. But we don't know is whose doing it and why, and who will survive. If I have any complaint it is they don't start profiling the killer until a few are dead already. I suppose you could say they were to much in a state of shock after the first two grisly deaths. This movie is not for the squemish. The deaths are graphicly gory. If you can stomach that though you may be pleasantly surprised.

2 out of 5 stars Cheesey.......2007-05-10

A plot that has been done before, but better.Weak acting.Suspense punctuated with over-the-top violence.

5 out of 5 stars Great Thriller that Makes You Think.......2007-04-28

I thought that Mindhunters was an excellent movie that kept me guessing until the very end. It is defiantly a psychological thriller and makes the watcher pay attention to every detail of the movie. The plot was gruesomely realistic and well planned out. Overall, the movie was quite spectacular, just the type of movie to get your mind working!

5 out of 5 stars *Solve The Mystery*.......2007-03-30

Mindhunters is a *EXCELLENT* movie. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It takes you on a rollercoaster ride, with many twists & turns. Remember never trust anyone. Everybody is a suspect. Watch it see if you can solve the mystery.

2 out of 5 stars The situation is never secure and this movie blows.......2007-03-01

When you ponder a movie and find that Christian Slater's screen time is actually one of the bright spots, you have to admit you've lowered your expectations to eye level with the worms living under your basement. Plot fallacies galore leave little but filler like hair clogging up a drain. Just take the opening scene (I'd warn you about the spoiler ahead but the movie itself is so spoiled I feel I'm doing you a favor): the FBI agents obviously think they are embarking on a genuine profiling case. Why else would they look like they're in fear for their lives rather than just their bloated egos? And why, after they've sprayed each other with bullets in the climax to the opening scene, would they pause -- unmoving and silent -- before getting back up and brushing off broken glass and, I guess, dummy projectiles? It's merely a theatrical trick to toy with the viewer and deflate the film's credibility. The remainder of the movie is merely a whodunit with so many plot twists they leave skid marks. I made the mistake of renting this based on the high percentage of votes in its favor. Don't buy into it. Anyone who's been around the movie complex a few times will see right through the smoke and mirrors at work. The only thing that I'll even remember in a few months' time if somebody asks me what I thought about "Mindhunters" will be the endlessly repeated line, "The situation isn't secure until the drive home," which is a far cry from "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore." And I'm not.

Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell swagger through S.W.A.T., a guns-and-big-trucks macho extravaganza based on the 1970s TV show of the same name, about the police teams brought in to take care of extremely dangerous situations. Jackson plays a sergeant brought out of retirement to form a new squad, which includes rebellious Farrell (The Recruit) and tough babe Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight, Blue Crush). After a lot of training and head-butting with a smarmy police captain, the squad gets assigned to transfer the head of a European crime cartel (Olivier Martinez, Unfaithful) who's declared on television that he'll give $100 million to anyone who gets him out. Every scumbag in Los Angeles descends to claim the money, turning a routine transfer into a bullet-filled gauntlet. Despite some gaps in logic and a generic flavor, S.W.A.T. will satisfy most action-movie junkies. Also featuring LL Cool J and Josh Charles. --Bret Fetzer

Description

3 out of 5 stars Good Cast-Good Action.......2007-04-22

SWAT is a good, not a great action movie. The opening scene is a take on a real life bank robbery, in which the robbers wore body armour and fired fully automatic assualt rifles. This is probably the most intense scene in the film. The rest of the film is pretty much Hollywood fare, with a predictable storyline and character profiles, examples: good cop(s) turn bad, evil drug lord, tough female cop etc. etc. etc. Samuel L. Jackson gives a credible performance as the leader of the SWAT team. Colin Farrell as the hotshot member leaves no memorable screentime. The film attempted to forge a middle ground between reality and super heroism, but remained as neither.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best action movies.......2007-01-27

SWAT is one of the best films to be released in the last 5 years.

The mix of actors add to the excellent storyline that has enough twists and turns to keep you wondering what will happen next. Colin Farrell, Samuel Jackson and Michelle Rodrigues make an excellent trio.

The entire film deserves a lot of credits.

I saw this movie on t.v. for the first time a few days ago and now I'm buying the DVD. I'm not a big fan of action movies but I do watch them now and again. I've read quite a few negative reviews about this film and I think they are undeserved. When I saw it I thought it was good, not Diehard good, but it held its own. I really enjoyed it. I really liked the idea that they included a female member of SWAT. One never sees a woman SWAT member. It looks like this is one of those movies you either love, like, or hate. One has to make up one's own mind.
