Over three million Palestinians live in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli military authority since 1967. Israeli director Yoav Shamir documents the impact of the enforced boundaries known as "checkpoints" on the Israeli border guards drafted to monitor them and the Palestinian citizens who must pass through them daily. Shot in a cinema verite style, a style of documentary filmmaking that stresses unbiased realism, the film shows these anonymous, one-time encounters between both sides and the lasting political, social and cultural effects. CHECKPOINT gives a chilling look at the destructive impact on both societies.

I am a little surprised at all the praise heaped on this film. That is not to say that what was presented in this film is not poignant and disturbing. What bothered me about the film is how little context the checkpoints and the overall situation was placed in. Without the overall context I cannot make an adequate judgment about the situation. I would have liked more information regarding the history of the checkpoints. Why were they established? Why are they sometimes closed? How easy is it to get a permit? All I have is another piece of a puzzle that seems to have an endless number of pieces. Having said that I also think that the movie came across as one-sided. If you agree with the side than you think the movie is brilliant and portrays the truth. If you disagree with that side the movie is pure propaganda. Some might say that the documentary filmmakers just acted as flies on the wall and therefore the film is impartial. But the truth is that the film was shot over two years and the film gathered over those two years was edited down to eighty minutes by human (and therefore biased) hands. If you are interested in this subject than I definitely suggest that you watch this movie, but I adamantly ask for you to not let you studies end there. This is definitely not the whole story.

My eyes never left the film while watching this documentary. It actually gives a little taste of what the checkpoints are like in the West Bank and Gaza. This film connected me with the Palestinian people, to what they have to endure everyday. Imagine, wanting to take your sick child to a clinic, yet having to beg a young israeli soldier in the cold rain to let you through, then being sent back home for no reason at all... it all depends on what mood those soldiers are in, even if you have an id card and are thoroughly searched, and having to stand in the cold for hours... it just depend's on THEIR mood if you get in or not. I would recommend this film to anyone who has no idea about the israeli/palestinian conflict. I have already lent my copies to dozens, who have all praised the film!

Incredible documentary without commentary, where we see how Israeli soldiers behave with Palestinians in the everyday task of make their lives harder and harder (in the checkpoints). Poignant, strong, direct to the point. Do you need more similar statements?

I have never felt compelled to write a review until I saw this movie. As a non-political American I have heard for years about the checkpoints where the Israeli border guards meet the Palestinian citizens, and I really did not understand. This movie is riveting. I can only call the treatment of the Palestinians trying to get through the checkpoint humiliating (and shocking). The woman are harassed and the men are abused. The border guards fair no better in system that places these young men in situations beyond their training or capacity for judgement. It is a real-time tragedy unfolding on the screen, full of hapless players, endless conflict, and implied ripples for generations. When the old Palestinian heads for the border line saying "Shoot me" you wonder how far it will go. If you love freedom, this movie is painful.
