Customer Reviews:
Great movies.......2007-06-27
I really enjoyed watching the Jack Ryan movies in this collection while I could. Now when I place them in my DVD player I get a message like "Title 8 Prohibited from Playing at the present time". I believe my DVD laser lens may be dirty and I'll try cleaning it today. I sure hope I get to watch these movies again some day soon.
The complete deal with extras.......2007-06-13
If you are a fan of the the Jack Ryan series then this is the set to get starting with the one that started the franchise to the climatic prequel that to this point concludes the series. The price is right too conidering what trilogy and movie sets go for these days, and you don't feel empty handed due to the fact that each film is a special edition so if you are a movie freak and enjoy all of the behind the scenes stuff then you get to enjoy all of that as well. Overall it's the best choice for the price in looking for the films featuring Jack Ryan.
Jack Ryan Special Edition collection.......2007-06-08
I love thrillers & to have all of them in one collection is great!
Jack Ryan movies.......2007-02-14
All four movies were the greatest. I believe I like Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan the best and then Ben Affleck but he's a great second.
Perfect Box Set.......2007-02-10
I have been looking to find all of these movies, the box set was perfect!

The third installment in the cinematic incarnation of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan and the second starring Harrison Ford, this follow-up to Patriot Games is a more complex, rewarding, and bolder film than its predecessor. Ford returns as Ryan, this time embroiled in a failed White House bid to wipe out a Colombian drug cartel and cover up the mess. The script, by Clancy and John Milius (Red Dawn), has an air of true adventure about it as Ryan places himself in harm's way to extract covert soldiers abandoned in a Latin American jungle. There are a couple of remarkable set pieces expertly handled by Patriot Games director Phillip Noyce, especially a shocking scene involving an ambush on Ryan's car in an alley. The supporting cast is superb, including Willem Dafoe as the soldiers' leader, Henry Czerny as Ryan's enemy at the CIA, Joaquim de Almeida as a smooth-talking villain, Ann Magnuson as an unwitting confederate in international crime, and James Earl Jones as Ryan's dying boss. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
Description
In CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, Harrison Ford returns as intrepid CIA agent Jack Ryan. When his mentor, Admiral Greer (Jones), becomes gravely ill, Ryan is appointed acting CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence. His first assignment: investigate the murder of one of the President's friends, a prominent U.S. businessman with secret ties to Colombian drug cartels. Unbeknownst to Ryan, the CIA has already dispatched a deadly field operative (Dafoe) to lead a paramilitary force against the Colombian drug lords. Caught in the crossfire, Ryan takes matters into his own hands, risking his career and life for the only cause he still believes in -- the truth.
Customer Reviews:
Harrison Ford.......2007-04-20
is the best Jack Ryan. This movie keeps you going and doesn't stop until you reach the credit lines.
Fantastic Sequel To Patriot Games.......2007-04-13
In "Clear and Present Danger," Harrison Ford once again plays Jack Ryan, the intrepid hero of Tom Clancy's novels, who was first played in films by Alec Baldwin in "The Hunt For Red October," and then by Ford in "Patriot Games."
In this film, Ford ends up caught up in a web of danger and intrigue involving the President, the death of one of the President's closest friends, Colombian drug cartels, and CIA black-ops agents. As usual, Ryan finds himself battling against all sides to get to the truth and trying to stay alive while doing it. Ford is superb as usual as Ryan, Willem Dafoe is excellent as the leader of the black ops group, and Joaquin de Almeida plays a properly sinister and nasty villain.
This is one of the best thrillers made by Hollywood in a long time, and should please Clancy and non-Clancy fans alike.
Movie ends where story begins..........2007-04-01
Intrepid Jack Ryan (Harison Ford)is about to testify before a SENATE oversight Committee licking its chops in anticipation of IMPEACHMENT Proceedings against the President(Donald Moffat).CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER brings viewers to this critical moment then stops.Ironically, this is where real C&PD,with all hell to break loose,is.Viewers may not initially sympathize with the President, his Kingsmen and all Special OPX soldiers sent-out to do the dirty work against Drug Lord Terrorists, but in our Yuppie-drug cosseting culture there is cause for pause where Clear & Present Danger really lies.
Anyone who followed this past weeks voting by the entire Democratic Party in Congress to cut-off funds to troops;prescribe dates of surrender-withdrawal to Terrorist forces at home and abroad;(plus load tons of tax extortion Pork/dreck on what amount to the biggest Copperhead bill since the Civil War)needs to suppress his self-satisfaction at this typical Hollywood fantasy. Give me overt stuff like James Bond over the pseudo-reality that pretends that good guys are really the bad guys;the bad guys are "Family men";and the hero must bring down our own Government to finesse the rights of the Yuppie class to suck-up cocaine by the ton. CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER,indeed.
Great Military Action Movie with Upscale Civilian Adventure!.......2006-11-04
This Tom Clancy novel-based movie blends great military action with normal civilian life as Harrison Ford comes under attack in his suit-clad convoy of diplomats with rocket propelled grenades in the streets ruled by the drug cartels. Dramatically, he and a few others survive the attack and later fight back with vengeful patriotism. This movie also features one of the greatest footage of a carrier-based F/A-18 Hornet dropping a laser-guided bomb from over 10000 feet which glides precisely on target on the drug cartel's safe house. The special operations on the jungle below also packs action that will blow you away!
Action packed political thriller........2006-08-20
I love Harrison Ford movies and this one has plenty of action in it, plus a political subplot that remains relevant even today.

When a psychiatrist (Yves Montand) begins talking to a young woman (Barbra Streisand), he realizes that she can recall a past life while under hypnosis. Although this brash New Yorker is thoroughly modern and somewhat abrasive, he becomes fascinated by the 19th-century English woman who speaks through her. This oddball musical flicks back and forth between period flashbacks and modern times, which may be one reason it never builds up much power in either realm. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever failed at the box office in 1970, one of a number of glossy musicals that could not find an audience in the post-Easy Rider movie world. In fact, one of the film's out-of-place costars is Jack Nicholson, a symbol of the new movies that were making old-fashioned musicals a thing of the past. It didn't help that Paramount severely cut On a Clear Day before releasing it. For all that, the picture is enjoyable and--at the end--really quite touching. Director Vincente Minnelli (Meet Me in St. Louis), then near the close of a fabulous career, maintains his usual careful eye for color and design, and keeps Streisand relatively restrained--for Streisand, that is. --Robert Horton
Description
Daisy Gamble can be described as an eccentric woman who hears phones before they ring. Determined to kick her smoking habit for the sake of her fianc , she enlists the help of a psychiatrist and undergoes hypnosis. During her visits, it is revealed that she can regress into past lives and channel her many different personalities and her doctor finds himself falling in love with one of her old personalities.

A Joy to Watch.......2007-06-27
Barbra Streisand in two rolls, gorgeous costumes and songs, director Vincent Minnelli, and a young Jack Nicholson. What's not to like? This is a lighthearted, thoroughly enjoyable film that's overlooked by many because it's not up to Minnelli's 'usual standards.' If it had been directed by anyone else, it would be lauded as the fun movie that it is. There's just so much that can be done with a lightweight play, so give both Minnelli and Streisand a break. Though this is no 'Hello, Dolly' or 'Meet Me In St. Louis', it's still a joy.
Barbra collection.......2007-04-11
Loved this movie for the fantastic wardrobe!!! Really '60's and cute, too. You can't beat Barbra S. for any songs in any of her movies, and of course, the comedy of her love stories!! Enjoy this fun movie!!
Better than the original.......2007-02-07
How delightful to have this classic musical, in such great quality, on a dvd which I can enjoy for years. It is better than the original.
On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever.......2007-01-10
I was delighted when I got this, and have been delighted ever since. I do not believe in reincarnation, and some reject this movie for this reason. The story line, the photography, the music, the subtle and unsubtle ironies make this an all-time favorite for me. I heartily recommend it. '5' is not a high enough rating.
Costumes, Costumes, Costumes!.......2006-12-07
This is a tremendously fun and frothy movie with great vocals by La Streisand (of course)and an interesting fantasy story line. However, the main reason to watch is the costumes! Over-the-top and outright gorgeous during the "English" scenes and mod to the max in the modern-day scenes, each fits the story beautifully. And Streisand looks good in all of them. I never tire of watching this movie and am pleased it finally arrived in DVD format for improved editing and colour.

Description
Winner of the International Critics' Award at the Toronto Film Festival, DEATH OF A PRESIDENT is conceived as a fictional TV documentary broadcast in 2008, reflecting on a monstrous and cataclysmic event: the assassination of President George W. Bush on October 19th, 2007. The "documentary" artfully combines archival footage and carefully composed interviews presented in a respectful and dignified manner. The film doesn't advocate violence; rather, it shows its pernicious effects. It is exciting and questioning, and it offers viewers a riveting story -- creating a provocative political thriller that reveals larger truths.
Customer Reviews:
Solid and Thought-Provoking.......2007-06-25
This is a world-class film with subtlety that may be lost on some. It is easily five stars for its blend of real-world filming of Bush and Cheney, its use of "interviews" supposedly after the fact, and its extremely subtle ending: without appearing, Dick Cheney gets to be President and passes Patiot Act III which finishes trashing the Constitution and our concept of "Liberty & Justice for All." Nailing a passing Muslim for the crime, even after a black man committed suicide, left a note, and had a copy of the detailed schedule that could only have come from Dick Cheney or Scooter Libby, one can only ponder the near term.
I abhor the death penalty, assassination, and secession, but I also abhor war crimes and what is being done in our name, all of which give Vermont and others serious grounds for secession. It will take a quarter century to undo the damage done by Dick Cheney and his witless "decider."
See my varied lists on serious DVDs, impeachment, Iraq after action, and evaluative books on Dick Cheney, the best two of which are listed below. In my reviews, mostly in the second, I itemize 25 high crimes and misdemeanors that Dick Cheney should be facing charges on as I write this. He has, virtually alone, destroyed the Republic.

bad guys.......2007-06-22
I really liked it. It was the old plot: the good guy vs. the bad guy and the bad guy lost. It's just a movie!
A surprise, great for all the unexpected reasons!.......2007-06-05
I went into this not really knowing what to expect. Was this going to be a movie bashing or supporting Bush? Both and Neither. It's a mistery movie with real-ish life results of what would happen. This movie comes from the perspectives of several different people. And leaves you thinking about how things are today... as opposed to years ago. Also makes you think, things can always be worse than they are today. It's an amazing movie even if it wasn't about Bush but rather a fictional President.
There's No Honor In Dying for an Immoral Cause.......2007-06-03
Arriving at the Toronto Film Festival last year "Death of a President" had their puppy dog eyes all ready to go, pleading for attention that they found a lot easier than I think they were anticipating. Republicans and wannabe Republicans (coughHillarycough) denounced it as trash because to them the idea of Bush being dead was too much for their weak hearts to handle. Lions Gate struck while the controversy was still hot and stuffed the film into whatever theaters would have it right before an election that would determine whether the President's powers would live to see another day. We cannot just toss this movie away because some might not like their approach, it does have a point to make and presents a thesis that I agree with: If Bush were to die and Cheney were to become President he would use his new found office to push through more dictatorial laws and drum up a war with some other country that happens to be rich in oil (Syria in this case). On top of that they would probably find themselves a Muslim patsy and serve him up as red meat to the blood thirsty American public. Then he would be convicted of whatever Cheney sees fit (wrongfully of course) because we oh so proud Americans are usually are too preoccupied to even know what day of the week it is.
It is just that the film itself isn't that good. Using lots of found footage and fictional reenactments it tells the story, in documentary form, of Bush's death and the aftermath. Director Gabriel Range gets lots of actors to play talking heads, primarily made up members of Bush's inner circle. Only none of them bother to do a very god job. Becky Ann Baker is there playing the naive speechwriter which is fitting since she played the naive mom so well on "Freaks and Geeks." The rest of them either mumble or overact their way through a flat script that always talks in one voice. And the reenactments are just horrendous. They look the creations of a shoestring budget that they actually were. I would also like to point out that while the concept may seem edgy to us, those stuck living in the land of living Bush, but hypothetically anybody watching this in 2008 would already know the chronology quite intimately. They do try and go with the angle where they are unveiling who the true killer actually is, but that doesn't really arrive until the last half hour or so and feels tacked on. I believe in the motives behind this movie, I just don't believe in the movie itself.
If I could also take a moment to scare away any potential viewers hoping to get a cheap thrill out of pretending that the Prez is dead for 90 minutes, give or take. What Range envisions happening after Bush dies is actually worse (crazy, I know), and so you would be in for quite a rude awakening. The scenes he is able to put together simply by cobbling together footage and changing the context is very impressive to me. Cheney's speech at Reagan's funeral turns into Cheney speaking about Bush. By no means is this a bad movie, its intellectual power unfortunately is overpowered by sensationalism and bad acting. The concept of the disgruntled troop(s) who returns home and seeks revenge of the Commander in Chief is staring to take hold. First we had "Homecoming" on Showtime and now this. Massive amounts of brainwashing has prevented this from happening thus far, but if the whispers of cinema have any truth in them then that bill is about to come due. **3/4
Pure Propaganda. Did the CIA Produce this film?.......2007-05-21
This film definitely had a bias and seemed to support the idea that further measures of the patriot act were necessary. It potrayed Bush and Cheney as heros and protestors as an angry crazed mob buring the flag. Furthermore there was a woman speechwriter for the president who kept impressing upon you the genius of George W and Dick Cheney. What a farce!!! The making of false heros.

Best Motley Crue DVD Ever.......2007-03-24
I have never really been impressed with concert DVD's but this one is awesome!!! I don't understand the people who give it a bad reveiw. Granted I don't like all the F-word usage,Tommy's solo,or the Boobie Cam,but I just skip them. Aside from those this is truly an awsome DVD. If I don't watch it, I listen to it ,just about every day. Vinces voice is one of a kind. Tommy,Nikki,& Mic all give a Great show too! The theme is interesting and the whole show keeps you entertained. The extra's are cool too. I like watching the band talk with there fans,& the groups Individual reveiwes of the concert. It is really cool. Motley Crue really puts on a show for their Fans! I own about 30 Music DVD's and this is the only one so far that I really enjoy! It is well worth the money. My whole family loves this DVD.
Nikki is friggin` hot.......2006-10-23
This performance is top notch, but the DVD lacks a bit, especially the sound. It`s hard to hear the singing and the instruments through all the noice from the audience. On a normal TV set without additional speakers, the sound is horrible. You`ll have to do quite a bit of tuning to get the sound right, and that may be too complicated for some. The easiest way is to just use headphones, that seemed to work fine. Having said that, the performance is sooo great. The first time i watched it, I thought they had added Vince`s voice later, it was simply too good to be true. Having watched it several times, I am certain that there is no lip sync in there. It is really Vince there, all the time, all the way. And man, can he sing
Great, Fun DVD.......2006-09-10
I love this DVD. I watch it all the time. Sometimes I just put it on and play it while I'm doing other things around the house but most of the time I'll stop what I'm doing and sit down and watch the rest. It's not about nitpicking every little thing in the DVD. Personally I think the vocals are pretty good. Vince sings in tune, hitting all the high notes. Does he get ever word in there perfectly, no, but as a performer myself I understand how out of breath you can get on stage. Compared to the way Axle sings in their live DVD, Vince is golden. There are a couple part I skip through: the Nikki and Tommy solos, They are talent guys but I'm not too into experimental music. The Boobie Cam is old after you've seen it once. I mean, come on, how many times can you see the same girls show off their fake boobs? I don't care how much you like boobs it's not that great. Those are the only negative points of the entire DVD though. They play a ton of great songs, the stage is cool, the performance is good and you can watch it over and over and just have fun. that's what it's really all about.
I agree with skymac2's review.......2006-08-30
I agree 110% with Skymack2's review on this Motley Crew DVD. He put every aspect into perfect perspective. It sucks! Shame on these guys for taking our money. The Band should have watched it themselves first. I have a very high end AV system and this DVD sounds horrible.
Raw, Loud, True, Epic...Welcome to the Rock n' Roll show.......2006-07-25
If you're reading this, there are actually only two options
*You may be a long time crue fan (as I am)
*You may be just curious
In the first case, do yourself a favour, stop reading this $%%# and get this dvd.Soon.Now.
In the second case, well, Motley Crue can't be told.
You have to see them. And hear them.
Since the Sunset Strip days, they followed one simple, basic rule, on and off stage : no hesitation.
And in 2006, these four bottles of expansive wines are just gettin' better and better.
They deliver today the best rock n' roll show around, and I mean rock n' roll : no compromise, loud, excessive, funny and psichotic.
They don't play the role, they're not tryin' to fool anyone with so-called deep message, they don't follow trends because they ARE trend-makers since 1981.
So all that remains is pure adrenalin rush all along the concert.
With a rhitm section wich would move a rocketship, a classic style guitar man wich blends bluesy and slide bits with metal and punk attitude, a frontman who just can hold an entire arena on the palm of his hand...
Everyone of them, picked one by one, it's a show itself..
See Nikki as the master of mahyem, biting fan's fingers while literally knockin' his bass strings to produce earthquaking lines that are the spine of crue sound...
See Mick kickin' away the pain with the medicine magic of his guitar...
See Vince who sings from the soul, and proves that he can be the only one who can share the stage with the other guys..
And what the heck...Tommy on drums : true , unstoppable force of the nature..the best rock drummer ever...you see him, you name it...
Living in Italy, I didn't had many chances to see them live, so this dvd's like a blessing fo me.
I was in the first row in 1989, Dr. Feelgood tour, in Milan, and I can tell you, the energy and attitude are the same,
may be even better...
Don't be a clown...use it before you lose it.

An independent film from Britain, On a Clear Day tells the story of a man trying to come to terms with his past by setting a goal for the future: to swim across the English Channel. Frank (Peter Mullan) is a stoic man who tells his young grandson, "Things aren't meant to be fixed nowadays." After working all his life, the Glasgow shipbuilder finds himself middle-aged and jobless. His loving wife Joan (two-time Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn) tries to lessen the financial burden by learning to become a bus driver. Frank's relationship with his househusband son Rob (Jamie Sives) is distant at best. And though he doesn't speak of his other son, who drowned decades ago, Frank thinks of him often. Director Gaby Dellal reveals a gentle touch in the film's quieter moments. But she's just at home balancing the melodramatic moments (Rob confronting his father in a swimming pool) with comic relief (Frank's friendship with a woebegone group of men, including optimistic Danny, played by Billy Boyd from The Lord of the Rings). In the end, it's less important whether Frank's goals are met than mending his broken relationships. The finale is touching in the way it all plays out, because some things are meant to be fixed. --Jae-Ha Kim

What to do next?.......2007-06-05
When you're fiftyish and have just lost your job, what do you do next?
If you're Frank in "On A Clear Day," then you swim the English Channel, and confront some nasty personal demons. This wee, warm Scottish flick does a great job balancing out comedy and melancholy, with a bit of family strife thrown in. It's just a small-scale, sweet little film.
A Scottish shipyard is laying off workers, and Frank (Peter Mullan) suddenly finds himself without a job. His wife Joan (Brenda Blethyn) starts training to be a bus driver, and his relationship with his son Rob (Jamie Sives) remains chilly, as it has been ever since his other son's death. Frank becomes increasingly depressed and antsy, unsure what to do next.
But while on a "booze cruise" with his friends, inspiration strikes -- he'll swim the Channel. He keeps his plans a secret from his family, but allows Chinese-Scot Chan (Benedict Wong) to be his trainer, with his pals as moral support. But his secret alienates his wife and son even further, and as he faces the biggest swim of his life, Frank will have to overcome his worst, most haunting memories of the sea.
"One Clear Day" is basically a heartwarming little family dramedy, which avoids the usual cliches and schmaltz, even in scenes where it could have easily become goopy. It takes a pretty talented director to handle things like government layoffs and racism without being heavy-handed, or dealing with emotional trauma without being soppy about it.
The plot seems even more colourful against the grey skies and seas of Scotland -- there are sad flashbacks and some melancholy moments, but Dellal balances it out with kooky good-ol'-lads comedy, such as Danny joyously careening around on a tiny motoboat. And the dialogue is nothing short of hilarious, whether it's bawdy jokes or banter ("Shark. Thirty-five footer." "Fell off my bike. Two-wheeler!").
Mullan has a very challenging role -- his character has repressed his grief, and doesn't want to let anyone see his problems. So Frank is gruff, secretive, but has moments of unbridled delight. Blethyn and Sives round out the family beautifully, as Frank's loving wife and emotionally starved son -- the beach scene with the three of them is enchanting.
But the supporting cast is also great -- Jodhi May has a small, good role as Rob's wife, and Ron Cook and Sean McGinley are snappily solid as two of Frank's pals. And Billy Boyd simply steals every scene he's in, as the perpetually upbeat, charmingly troublesome Danny. But comedy isn't his only skill: his best scene would have to be when Danny sadly confesses that he's always wanted to be like Frank.
"On A Clear Day" is a sweet, small Scottish movie with plenty of heart and joking-around, and the ability to warm your heart without turning your stomach. Definitely worth swimming to.
The Believable Exraordinary.......2007-05-15
What could be a trite, Disneyesque family values homily turns out to be endearing and (gulp) even inspiring. One of those films with modest aspirations and surprisingly deep achievement. If you don't like happy outcomes (they do occasionally occur in life . . .), you'll hate it.
Uplifting & Life Affirming Movie! .......2006-11-09
I went to see this film in theatres with little idea of what to expect. I was overwhelmed! This movie carefully presents characters that feel familiar and full. Frank, the story's hero, who decides to swim the English Channel in a bid to help move on from past traumas, reminded me in turns of my grandfather, my father and me.
The actors in this film are wonderful to watch and the film is heartfelt without be smaltzy. It's a very enjoyable and funny movie, with an engaging emotional core. I bought this film for several people for Christmas this year, and I earnestly believe they will all embrace it as I did.
Kept Me Laughing.......2006-10-08
It is a wonderful film about "real life" people. I think it is really hard to pull that off and keep it interesting when so many viewers are used to Hollywood glitz. But this movie was full of laugh-out-loud scenes and the dialogue was great. Though, the soundtrack volume choices left something to be desired for American ears struggling with accents. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and laughing at their antics.
A good movie for older adults.......2006-09-09
Frank is laid off from his job and feels like his life is over. Slowly he gets himself together and decides to swim the English channel.
I liked Frank and his wife Joan a lot. I admired Joan wanting to try something different (learning to drive a bus). Frank's friends are interesting and seem like real people too.
My one complaint is there wasn't captioning. I had a difficult time understanding their accents occasionally and I felt I missed some important dialog.

It was for good reason this film won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Documentary, as it displays, in abundance, the emotional human responses Maya Lin elicits with her architectural designs and sculpture. There was much controversy surrounding her Vietnam War Memorial, not the least of which focused on her Chinese-American origins. Writer/director Freida Lee Mock uses conventional methods (interviews, archival footage) to follow Lin's career in chronological order. It examines her work since winning the contest in which her student model was chosen for the infamous Washington war memorial. The stark emotion evoked by Lin's sensuous and kinetic creations promises to bring tears to your eyes. Unfortunately, we learn more about her work than about the artist, whose personality is oddly absent from this film. Mock only somewhat reveals the intense focus and powerful vision that drives Lin. --Rochelle O'Gorman

This Academy Award winner reveals the contentious origins of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and tells the story of its creator, a 21-year-old architecture student whose plan was selected from over 1,000 different designs, beating out some of the most prest
Customer Reviews:
asian architect, american icon.......2007-01-25
When Maya Lin was just a twenty-one year old architecture student at Yale, the committee for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial chose her proposal (a class assignment, it turns out) from a national competition of 1,441 submissions as the winning design. Then the battle began. Congress people and even Vietnam veterans opposed it, the latter caricaturing it as a "big, black scar in the earth." Others compared it to a boomerang. Lin was vilified as a communist. And a memorial designed by an Asian, woman, college student? In the end, after congressional hearings at which the young Lin testified, her design was built and then dedicated in 1982. I have taken my family to the memorial when we visited Washington and, along with virtually everyone who has visited, can attest to the incredibly evocative power of this public monument. The first half of this documentary covers the VVM; the last half reviews her other prominent works, namely, the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, the Museum of African Art, the Wexner Center at Ohio State University, a fountain commemorating the contributions of women at Yale, an open air Peace Chapel, and her work with the Presidio project in San Francisco. I am always inspired and encouraged to follow the story of a person whose sense of vocation is so strong and crystal clear. This film won an Academy Award as Best Documentary in 1994.
3 X longer than it ought to have been.......2006-05-04
why do documentarians need to pad their movies? this wouldve been a nice half-hour film about the building of the vietnam veterans memorial, but it gets lost in far less compelling side tales. truth be told: ms lin is just not a very compelling personality.
architect's attitude and sensuality.......2006-02-17
i watched this film after viewing Nathaniel Kahn's more personal depiction of his father. The latter one is an intimate conversation with the dead. This one is asking the viewers to share the growing process of a living person, in parallel to and through events in the recent history of the USA. A leitmotif of time and history running along with personal perception and interpretation of these events.
Maya's architecture, funny to say, is a lot about the sensuality of touch, which goes beyond the visual. Never in any other film about an architect's work does the audience being so moved - by the detail depiction of a hand touching a piece of stone engraved with names; the quiet flow of a thin film of water over a piece of stone being interrupted by the tip of fingers tracing the history of a place....tears....
We see in Kahn's architecture an emptiness of self in order to contain the infinity of the universe in the most cerebral way; while Lin's is an embracement of the past, present and future in the most romantic and sensuous. Sometimes i wonder if it is turning architecture into too much an emotional apparatus?
Anyway, i would recommend such interesting parallel viewing of the two films about these 2 american architects.
A wonderful film about a real American Hero........2004-11-09
This film moved me. Maya Lin is incredibly gifted, articulate, and seems amazingly humble. The Vietnam Memorial, and the hardships of it's creation, show the young woman's strength. It's truely a feat worth the history books. The most striking thing I got out of this film though was the fact that it wasn't a fluke. The rest of her work is just as incredible, even if not as well known. I'm so glad that I saw this film. The DVD is well done, audio is good and the extras, while sparse, are enough. Everyone really should see this film about one of the great artists living in our time.
Evocative!!.......2004-06-13
Maya Lin is a great designer, and this respectful film shows us her well mannered approach to art and architecture. I'll especially note her tactile abilities in her work process, and her perfection and concerns for the built environment in this film. This DVD of Miss Lin is a down to earth inspiration to a self starting person like myself.

Jessica Lange is a social worker who falls for an abandoned newborn and breaks all the rules by bringing him home. Halle Berry is the homeless druggie who dumped the baby. One of the film's best attributes is that it reveals everyone's perspective, though much of the story is told from Berry's point of view. Strung out on crack, Berry's character thinks nothing of hiding her baby in a cardboard box near a dumpster before going off for a fix. We watch Berry painfully pull herself up out of the gutter and make a life for herself. She embraces decency and sobriety and becomes the person she might have always been had her childhood been different. After Lange and her amiable spouse (David Strathairn) have formed strong family ties with this difficult child, they find themselves fighting to keep him when Berry decides she wants Isaiah back. Naomi Foner's clever script reveals a legal system that is as much a character in this painful story as the attorney (Samuel L. Jackson) who takes on the case pro bono. Though the film ultimately flounders under a hesitant ending, Lange is such a dynamo that this tragic story still comes recommended. --Rochelle O'Gorman

losing isaiah.......2007-02-27
is a powerful movie to watch and learn about love of a different race..
losing isaiah.......2006-07-05
Very nice heart touching story. Sadly there are also real stories like this one that don't normally have this happy ending, but the story does touch a lot of hearts. I enjoyed it.
superb.......2006-07-02
Losing Isaiah Is the best from Hallie Berry. It is the best i have seen in a long long time. I wish ms.berry won an award for this film. ms.berry did well on this as crack addict trying to regain custody of her son. I like how she was tough to jessica lange and her husband. samuel l. jackson did well too as ms. berry's attorney. I didnt like jessica lange and her husband were nasty to ms.berry
What's best for Isaiah?.......2005-09-21
Perhaps the biggest complaint I have with custody battles is that they are ultimately based around the selfishness of the adults involved, whether it be a battle between the child's mother and father, or between the biological parent(s) and the foster parent(s). "Losing Isaiah" is an example of a movie that uses this sad truth to tell a compelling story.
Normally, I'd be quick to write off someone like Halle Berry's character (a former crack addict who abandoned her baby in an alley) as someone unfit to raise this child. I'd also be uneasy about tearing Isaiah away from the only home he's ever known. Thankfully, this film does not end there.
After the courtroom decision is rendered, we see a much different Isaiah than the playful, cheerful child we first encountered. Did anyone bother to stop and ask him what he wanted? In an ideal world, someone would have. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world, but at least we have people who (albeit a little slowly) realize this mistake in "Losing Isaiah." Were I to be given the assignment of filming a movie based around a custody battle, this is the kind of movie I would make.
honest.......2005-09-16
Very good movie. Halle always shines in whatever type of role she plays. Man she can act.

--Tom Keogh

The Hunt for Red October
Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh
Patriot Games
Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, opted for a Broadway role instead. In this film, Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists. The next thing he knows, the Ryan clan has been targeted by the same terrorists, who invade his Maryland home. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. --Marshall Fine
