Catch the good parts on u tube.......2007-03-09

I was pretty dissapointed with this purchase. For being as long as it was I expected it to be more in depth. There was nothing on here I haven't seen before and I've actually seen better stuff on u tube as well as the best parts of this one. Don't waste your money.

This DVD was a terrific survey of the origins of various Far Eastern martial arts that are now seen in the West.

The DVD is about 90 minutes featuring the history of many martial arts forms, how they evolved in the last few hundred years and how they are being practiced in the US today from the popular to the esoteric.

The material is interesting and the production quality is high. No particular martial arts type is emphasized and there is a broad section covered.

Wow, what a video.......2006-05-15

Everyone who does judo should see this video of what judo was like in the 50's in Japan. At the Kodokan there were several living 10th dans and other masters, Judo Championships were just starting, a new self-defense kata was just being created, and judo was being introduced to visiting foreigners at a time when the popularity of judo around the world was exploding. This video gives you a glimpse of how judo evolved. It is narrated by Hal Sharp with personal stories, and segments are expanded in other DVD's in the series.

This documentary focuses mostly on the recent superstars of Judo (50's to 90's). A little focus is placed Judo's origin, but not nearly enough to justify the title of the film to be the "History of Judo". Not being a Judoist myself, I am disappointed that there was no explanation of how points are scored, how the athletes train, and only one technique was identified by name. It is also very European focused; how Judo spread in Europe. While the film identifies that the origin of Judo is Jiu Jitsu, it does not contrast between the two styles in order or explain what the differences are. As a Christian, I was a little offended when the commentator of the documentary said "In the beginning was the word, and the word was Jigaro Kano". This quote is derived from the Bible (John 1:1), and refers to Jesus. Dr. Kano might have been an amazing person, but he was no Jesus Christ. If you are not a Christian, then the comment won't bother you. This film would be good for a Judoist, especially a fan of Olympic Judo, but not for many others beyond that.

A great series of Judo history by Hal Sharp. A must for Judo players.

See judo as it was!.......2006-05-30

Hal Sharp is an American Judo treasure. He wrote the first book I ever bought back in 1965 and it still holds up today! Now Hal has taken hundred of hours worth of 16mm films he made in the 50's while stationed in Japan and put them on DVDs. These are rare and include judo legends like Mifune, Kotani, Okano, Kimura, Diago, and many more. Hal narrates the action with his personal memories of what it was like to be there. Thank You Hal for doing this.
