If you love Brett Favre, you're going to love this DVD. It is really excellent. I've seen it three times already, with various people, and they think it's great, too. You'll laugh a lot, and it'll make you prouder than ever to be a Green Bay Packer fan!!

5 out of 5 stars Brett Favre is the King.......2007-05-29

5 out of 5 stars If your a Brett Favre fan, you'll love this..........2007-01-28

My boyfriend and I are huge Brett Favre fans and I got him this for Christmas and we both loved it. It was similar to the DVD in his book, but it did have some things that were different. It was well documented and had humor with it also. Billy Bob Thorton did a great job with it. I'd suggest this to anyone who is a Packer or Favre fan.

    4 out of 5 stars Shattering must-see -- IF you can.......2007-02-19

First, a few technical observations. I ordered this DVD to show at a women's studies film program, and understood from the Amazon ad that it would be compatible with American equipment. Perhaps I didn't read the fine print carefully enough, but the copy that arrived was formatted for Region 3 (i.e., Hong Kong etc.) and could not play on an American DVD player. Unfortunately, I didn't discover this until a few days before the film program -- too late to return it and ask for another copy. Fortunately, I did manage to play it using my laptop computer, but that necessitated resetting the DVD player in my laptop for Region 3. I can only do this a certain number of times before the DVD player cannot be reset again. So after this film festival, I'm setting the computer back to Region 1 and leaving it there, after which my DVD of "Lilya" will be of no use except as a doorstop.

Part of the problem is that although this movie had a theatrical release in the U.S., it was never released commercially here on DVD or video; at least, that's what the guys at Blockbuster told me in response to my frantic, last minute effort to find another copy. And that's a pity, because this movie is a must-see for anyone interested in women's issues, or the economic and social problems of the former Soviet Union. It is not, to put it mildly, easy to watch, but it succeeds extremely well in its goal, which is to make you both sad and enraged for the children and teenagers all over the world who are tossed on the scrap heap of society. This movie puts a human face on a horrifically common type of exploitation (estimates have it that about 700,000 women and girls are "trafficked" every year, about 200,000 of them from eastern Europe). But the first three quarters of the film, the part that explains to us why girls like Lilya are so vulnerable to sexual trafficking, is almost as horrific. Abandoned by her mother, exploited and then rejected by her hateful aunt, shrugged off by the social services office, left in abject poverty and squalor to somehow fend for herself without any way of earning a legitimate living, it's obvious that prostitution will be her only possible choice. Can it get any worse than that? Yep, the last quarter of the film shows us that it can get a lot worse if she becomes the slave of a sadistic pimp.

I'm giving this DVD 3 stars because although the movie deserves 4, I'm subtracting one for the technical problems I encountered in showing it, along with a plea to Newmarket Films to market the DVD in this country in the appropriate format. "Lilya" won't be a big seller with Americans looking for a light evening's entertainment, but university and public libraries should definitely acquire it for their collections. At least a limited release in the United States would be a good idea. Come on, Newmarket Films, you're not in the business of selling huge commercial blockbusters like "Titanic." Why not release it in the U.S.? After all, a lot of girls in the "Natasha trade" end up here as well as in Sweden, and we need to know about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Sadness........2006-12-07

    Brilliant.

This had been in the queue for a while and then sat on our DVD player for at least a month and a half. Neither of us could remember putting it in the queue. After we were about halfway into it I recalled putting it in, but I don't remember any prompting to do so. It's a very sad film, though it did not leave me feeling personally wounded as something like Boys Don't Cry or Monster. It does not rely on manipulating the audience emotionally to make you feel what the characters feel. The story tells itself and in that is very un-western, un-Hollywood. On a personal level her circumstances were so bleak from the beginning that I could already detach myself from what she went through. The story is quite sparse, and it works well, but it left me wondering how many people in the former Soviet Union are that destitute (I never read of Daily Jo being even moderately wealthy) and how many young girls that happens to. It happens enough for someone to make a document-esque film about it. It was interesting too, as even though the writing was on the wall (bench, in this case), I hoped til the very end for a different outcome and actually thought it could change. How much of that is western brainwashing, or faith? Everyone does not "make it." Still, tone of the film is very hopeful. Given that, this film was wonderful in that it follows no precept. No label for it at all.

The actress, Oksana, was wonderful, as was the little boy, Artyom.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Haunting.......2006-11-23

This movie changed my life. I can't emphasize enough how much I think everyone should see it, especially those interested in social justice issues. This movie heartbrakingly portrays sex traffiking in unflinching detail where we see a young girl and her friend living in utter poverty and the things that happen as aresult. The pacing begins slowly but stay with it. At the middle point, I couldn't pull myself away. The movie brought me to tears and truly affected me.

I do have one question though - some review sites show this movie to be region 2 while amazon says region free. Does anyone know if this particular dvd will play on my region 1 player?

5 out of 5 stars Harrowing but worth it.......2006-11-08

LILJA 4-EVER may not be that wonderful of a film in cinematic terms: there are corny bits, the camerawork is not thrilling, its point is made early and hammered in throughout the movie. Yet this film got to me in a visceral sense: I was actually became claustrophic and slightly nauseous during parts of it, and I have a strong stomach. Why? LILJA is neither pornographic nor particularly violent, it simply feels real and it makes no apologies for grabbing its viewers into this study of the Russian sex-export trade. Oh...and it has to be the first movie I've seen that is somewhat critical if Sweden!

Sweden released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages: o Danish (subtitles) o English (subtitles) o Finnish (subtitles) o Norwegian (subtitles) o Swedish (subtitles) o Russian (Dolby Digital 5.1) Synopsis: Although it appears on the surface to be a relentlessly grim story of sexual and spiritual degradation, the third feature from Swedish wunderkind Lukas Moodysson retains the gentle humor and unaffected humanity of his previous features, Show Me Love and Together. The Dickensian tale of an Eastern European teen left to rot in the decaying tenements of the former Soviet Union, Lilya 4-Ever mixes grimy hyperrealism with flamboyant flights of fancy and leavens its politically charged subtext with quietly compelling storytelling. The dramatic success of the film rests with star Oksana Akinshina, veteran of precisely one previous feature. Luckily for Moodysson and his audience, the young actress proves more than capable of embodying both universal teen ennui and a horrifyingly specific form of bruised innocence. Under the intimate watch of cinematographer Ulf Brantas' handheld camera, Akinshina brings Lilya to life through the insouciant cast of her mouth, the defiant flash of her smile, and the quiet gravity of her suffering. The camera loves her, and the audience can't help but do the same, which makes her slow slide from idleness to exploitation all the more painful. Indeed, even as her eventual fate becomes painfully obvious, Lilya inspires dramatic tension. The film's final act is the emotional equivalent of a slasher film in which the audience screams encouragement to the heroine no matter how blindly she wanders into danger. Co-star Artiom Bogucharski deserves mention for the mournful intensity and unexpected joy his character brings to Moodysson's tale. Special Features: o Biographies o Interactive Menu o Photo Gallery o Scene Access o Trailer(s)

5 out of 5 stars I Urge You to See This Movie.......2006-12-28

Certain films evoke moods within us. We all have a favorite film, a film we enjoy for various reasons. We might find it entertaining, funny, or just cool. Then there's that film we can't categorize. A film that gives us a strange feeling in the pit of our stomach, a movie that leaves us stricken. This could be attributed to the subject matter of the film or, more specifically, how that subject matter is handled. Maybe it contains something you longed for or long for, something you can relate to (no matter how metaphorically), or maybe it has to do with the way you connect with the characters on a deep emotional level...Or maybe it's just something that happens to me. Few films have done to me, after a first viewing, what "Lilya 4-Ever" has done. The only the movies that have left me with that same feeling (off the top of my head) are "Thirteen" and "All the Real Girls." The former because it reminded me of those crazy events in adolescence and the latter because I could relate to those feelings one goes through during that period of "young love." None of those films, however, left me with a feeling this intense. Nothing that happens in "Lilya 4-Ever" has happened to me. But even writing this review, I still have that strange feeling in my stomach and I still find myself dwelling on parts of the film. The beautiful Oksana Akinshina plays Lilya, a 16-year-old girl, who opens the film on the verge of jumping off a highway overpass. It's clear that it's not going to be a happy movie. Backtracking, we meet Lilya as she tells everyone that she's moving to America. Her mother has met and fallen in love with a Russian man, who is taking them all with him to America. Lilya sees it as a chance to escape from the gloomy suburb of the former Soviet Union in which she lives. Then, her mother drops a bombshell. Lilya will stay there, while she and her boyfriend go to America...Later, they will send for her. As soon as her mother is gone, things go downhill for Lilya. She is evicted from the flat she shared with her mother and moved to a much dirtier, rundown one she hates immediately. Lilya seems to have only one friend, but once her friend convinces people that Lilya is a prostitute, Lilya severs ties with her. The only friend Lilya is left with is the 14 year old Volodya. Volodya is in love with Lilya and serves her as a guardian angel of sorts, protecting (or, at least, trying to protect) her from all the evils of the world. He's only 14, but much more perceptive than Lilya and clearly harbors feelings for her that she doesn't understand. Pretty soon, finding herself without money, Lilya turns to prostitution to make some. When she meets a nice man named Andrei, who offers her the chance to get a job and a flat in Sweden, she gives up prostitution and decides to go with him. Volodya sees there's something not right with the situation and warns her not to go. I haven't read any of the other reviews on Amazon, but I have no doubt that other reviewers have revealed what happens to Lilya once she reaches Sweden. Roger Ebert did in his review. Having said that, I won't say what happens. It makes the blow much more devastating. The feeling I mentioned that was evoked during my viewing, I had experienced with the movies I mentioned above. Those movies I wanted to see again, right away. This movie, I'm debating whether I want to see it again or not. This is, without a doubt, one of the most depressing films I've ever seen. I have never cried during a film (I came close once with "Million Dollar Baby"), but this film almost made me do it. Oddly enough, most viewers won't like it. Some might even find it stupid. This film just has some effect on me, one which I can't truly explain. The reason for this feeling might lie inside the character of Volodya. For Volodya, Lilya is the girl of his dreams. Everyone has felt this at some point. Few people have actually lived alone with this girl and slept next to her, however...Certainly not at his age. For him, she's everything and yet, he can't keep her or have her to himself. She's untouchable. To Lilya, Volodya is a friend whom she loves...In the end, Volodya is her everything. This is a great film that remains largely unmentioned in film circles. It's depressing, has a gloomy atmosphere to it, and is making me want to cry. So, needless to say, it's not the kind of movie one whips out on a Friday night to watch with the family. We all have favorite movies. Movies that entertain us, make us laugh, make us quote the dialogue...This one will keep your eyes glued to the screen, but can hardly be called entertainment. If you're laughing at this film, you might need to see a doctor and make sure you have a heart and a soul. There's no dialogue that's worth quoting. But whether you love, hate, can't explain how you feel about this film (much like me), or all of the above...You'll remember Lilya forever.

      5 out of 5 stars spiralling downwards.......2006-12-17

'Lilja 4-ever' reflects the fate of many East European girls, trying to find a better life in rich Western Europe. Many of them end up in the West's extensive sex-industry.

Blessed with high Scandinavian quality, this movie tells its heartbreaking story with great human insight. How sixteen year old Lilya is deserted by her mother (a former prostitute herself), and how poverty forces her to sell herself to men. We see Lilya spiral downwards in the community of her (former Soviet) Russian home town. There a lover-boy tempts her to emigrate to Sweden, providing a false passport.

Being well-chained inside the Swedish sex-industry, Lilya nevertheless discovers that Western people are much more money-conscious and less warm-hearted than she was used to in Russia. Predictably the sixteen year-old girl cannot cope anymore, and ends up by committing suicide.

      5 out of 5 stars Spirals.......2006-04-07

Even though this film is subtitled which is in itself drudgery by American standards, it radiates primordial truths about human nature that held my eyes hostage. I have personally seen young girls born to broken homes in this country suffer similiar fates. Survival trumps all other interests in the human animal and this film takes that premise to its utterly devastating consequences. If this doesn't touch your soul then it should be on display in a museum.

5 out of 5 stars Intill This Movie Is Released In The U.S. And Selling At Amazon, Go To Netflix And Rent It!.......2005-10-11

A movie you can't "Love", that's not why I gave it 5 stars, but it is a very important movie for all to see. Lukas Moodysson has cemented himself as one of the great young directors in Europe with this dark, extremely depressing, yet very important film. After watching Lilya's life unfold into what can only be described as "literally" hell on earth (Even worse then hell on earth), You will never forget her pain, her face (and in so, the millions of faceless children & adults who are enslaved in the underground sex industry that Lilya's character represents). At least that's the little bit of hope that I got from the story, which is filled with everything except hope. You will be mentally drained and mad as hell at the human race when this movie is over, but to me that's great movie making. A very, very, important movie!

2 out of 5 stars Another Pac DVD?.......2005-07-10

Another in the endless list of DVD documentaries chronicling the life of late rapper Tupac Shakur. Running at about an hour and featuring interviews with KRS One, Mike Tyson, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, and Pac's group, The Outlawz, "4-Ever" really doesn't go anywhere that previous "Pac-umentaries" haven't been. A lot of the Pac footage has been included in other releases and the interviews aside from some interesting stories from Tyson really doesn't bring anything new and insightful. For die-hard Tupac fans only.

        1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2004-06-16

While a good dvd by itself, its intentions are very bad. Most of the footage was stolen from several people who were planning to release it on a different dvd.

        5 out of 5 stars 2Pac 4Ever.......2003-11-01

Voice is personality. Tupac's voice was a siren. This film, with the compelling narration by KRS-ONE, shows how Tupac took his place in this world and stood there in an absolutely free relationship to it, demanding nothing in return. Tupac's music and poetry is inexhaustible, infinite, because, triumphing over time, again and again it condenses grace into magnificent clouds and lets it pour out in life-giving rain. Buy and see this film.

        5 out of 5 stars 2pac 4 ever - the title says it all.......2003-10-20

2pac 4 ever is one of the best 2pac dvds out. I support anything 2pac but this product would be right up there with the rest of your collection, definitely a must-have.
Contains live concert footage of 2pac on stage at 'The House of Blues'. Something we don't often see.
Bizzy Bone's interview will really touch you because the way he speaks about 'Pac, you can tell that its from the heart.
KRS-One was a great choice as narrator. I'm glad this dvd did'nt just show a nobody to commentate(i.e., a person who just wrote a book about 'Pac) but instead brought in people who really knew him or are well respected.
Right at the end of the documentary, you'll have a real deep feeling when the very last song 'On the other side of the sky' is played and there is footage simultaneously playing of 'Pac rhyming from a piece of paper. You have to watch it to know what I'm talking about.
2pac was such an inspiration to so many people WORLDWIDE and will be dearly missed til the day I die. "2PAC 4 EVER".

        4 out of 5 stars de-humanizing.......2006-12-29

Lukas Moodysson's 'A hole in my heart' reveals the de-humanization resulting from porn. And yes, focusing mainly on male & female sex-organs makes this movie pretty depressive. The more so, while Moodysson also shows how its participants are caught in the strong commercial pressures behind.

Set in a modest appartment in some anonymus Swedish suburb, we meet the four characters of 'A hole in my heart': a father in his fifties (the producer), his adolescent son, and a male & female porn-actor. Limiting the cast to four, as well as having the set almost entirely indoors, increases isolation & desolation. The son keeps himself out of any activity, thus serving as a contrasting mirror to the shooting in the next room.

That, in short, is the whole story of 'A hole in my heart'. One feels this movie is a little too long to tell us just that. I guess Moodisson thought a subject like this cannot be over-emphasized.

5 out of 5 stars Lukas is a cinematic god.......2006-10-08

Here we have the best of Lukas Moodysson, which is good indeed. 'Show Me Love' is the politically correct title of his film about teenage lesbians in a small Swedish town, their angst and their relationship. My girlfriend called it the best love story she'd ever seen. Then there is Lilja-4-Ever, about a young Eastern European girl forced into prostitution: food for thought there. 'Together' is about a Swedish commune which takes in a suburban family during the 1970's, some comedic moments and good entertainment. 'A Hole in My Heart' is a somewhat more experimental film, definitely not meant for watching with the whole family; the narrative isn't as clear and there are some gynecological scenes that might scare you. I've seen all of these films and recommend them heartily to anyone who wants to see something besides the standard Hollywood trash.
