To prove their point, they go to Siberia's Kamchatka Peninsula to live with a group of grizzlies that have never been with people before. Unexpectedly, they become foster parents to three orphaned cubs, hoping to fatten them up and teach them the skills they need to survive in this bear-bite-bear world.

I got this DVD on a sale where it was marked down to about $5.00. I didn't expect it to be high quality. I was pleasantly surprised. I've watched wildlife films and read wildlife pubs for nearly 40 years and rarely have I seen such beautiful cinematography. One reviewer panned this film and it was an unwarranted critique in my view. There was plenty of information, eye-popping photography, and no preachy tone. If I'd have paid $30, I would have felt it was well-spent.

Whenever I hear someone complain about a nature/wildlife film being too preachy, it makes me wonder if they're not fans of nature to begin with or if they're hunters. One cannot praise or preach enough about the beauty of nature and the need to preserve it. This film merely informs and captures the majestic beauty of a species and its territory.

Overvalued.......2006-08-21

Generally good photography is marred by unfocused editing -- as if the editors believed viewers have a very short attention span. Voice over is overly preachy and political. They should have focused on Bears, their habitat, habits, and behavior and left out the political preaching. Turn off the audio and enjoy, but there are better videos to be had. Look elsewhere first.

Note: Much of the footage was done with trained bears but portrayed as if it was wild nature captured on film. This sort of "nature" film technique went out of style with the scandals of the early Disney nature films. Too bad it had to resurface here.

Beautiful, informative film.......2002-12-29

"Bears" takes the viewer into the wilds of many areas of the world to get up-close views of these majestic animals. Like most IMAX films, there is a (fairly seamless) mix of both wild and captive animals; the captive animals are used to get shots that would simply be impossible or unsafe to obtain using wild animals in their habitats. The "making of" featurette very clearly explains this process, and it works well in most IMAX films. There were a few times when it was apparent that the black bears being used were "performing," but it was not a huge distraction from the film.

The movie is filmed in beautiful locations, really showcasing the bears' adaptation to their environments, and making crystal clear what an important part they are of the natural world. The viewer is educated on bear behavior, bear/human interaction, habitat conservation, bear awareness and safety precautions, and many other issues, all the while treating our eyes to spectacular views captured with the IMAX camera, which is unparalleled.

A great movie, highly recommended.

This DVD was a perfect complement after my class finished reading the book BearDance by Walter Hobbs. We did an intense study on grizzly bears and learned a lot from this DVD.

Well Ive always wanted to have this dvd of nature.Theres allot of episodes.12 to be exact.Pandas of the sleeping dragon,The Panda Baby,Showdown at grizzly river, Walking with giants,Extroadinary dogs,The early years,Horse and rider,Wild horses of mongolia wit julia roberts,Janes goodalls wild chimpanzees,Monkey in the mirror,Extroadinary bears,Parrots look whoes talking.12 episodes.Im not going to tell the descriptions because that would ruin it for you.But its good qaulity.And the panda episodes are really cute.The first episode there shooting the pandas in the wild.Not in a zoo like lots of films.The second ones really cute to.To tell the truth ive only watched 2 episodes.But ive seen the show before.I had 6 episodes on tape but now I get them on dvd.Im going to try to buy the most possible I can buy.So I highly reccomend nature never look so good set.

It is really awesome and cute.Just wathing the first episode made me love it.awesome qaulity.And its been my favorite show for a few years.Ive recorded it and im trying to bye the most possible I can buy.So I highly reccomen Nature dvd.I think every body would like it.

Outstanding Value - Nature Films.......2005-03-05

The individual films have been reviewed elsewhere. Outstanding value in case you are interested in twelve high quality films from the nature series [total of 11 hours]. The dvd with "Monkey in the Mirror" and "Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees" are worth the price alone. The other films are simply a bonus. Sooooo....if you like nature films you cannot go wrong. The only (minor) drawback is that the films are focused only on vertebrates (chimpanzees/monkeys, horses, pandas, bears, dogs and birds). However, they are highly recommended! I hope to see more of these collections in the future. Enjoy!

Bears, Too Close for Comfort is an excellent documentary that shows actual problems associated with an over abundance and mismanagement of wildlife in NJ due to politics interfering with science. Tom Phillips is to be commended for keeping an even keel with this highly controversial issue. This movie is a must see for all NJ residents and other states with similar problems.
