Bob Hope is in top form in this Technicolor parody of pirate pictures, doing his best vaudeville shtick as an inept performer trying to save princess Virginia Mayo from the evil clutches of governor Walter Slezak and pirate Victor McLaglen. It's all ridiculous fun, of course, but if you're a fan of Hope, you never tire of his self-effacing gags and double-entendres. His out-of-place show biz jabs were always clever, and they're all the funnier in this period setting--particularly the Bing Crosby jokes. But Walter Brennan nearly steals the film as a wacky pirate scheming to steal buried treasure, and tattooing the map on Hope's chest. One of Bob Hope's Best.......2007-05-21

I found this movie to be one of his best. In this swashbuckling movie I found a great mix of Pirate action adventure and comedy. The action adventure was real clean fun, and the comedy romance wasn't too mushy. This is a great film for both young and old alike. My 4 yr old boy loved it; I was amazed it kept his attention. He learned alot about Pirates too.
My friends 13 yr old daughter couldn't stop laughing.

What a cute movie! Bob is just the best when it comes to comedy. This is probably the funniest swashbuckling comedy I've seen so far. Love who Virginia Mayo leaves with at the end of the movie - you know it isn't going to be Bob, he usually can't seem to get & keep the girl!

If you want a funny twist on pirate movies, look no further than this movie. A nice alternative to the over-the-top performance of Johnny Depp's as Captain Jack Sparrow.

want a good way to pass some time when all 123 stations on cable have nothing good on? pop some corn, sit yourself down and enjoy a fun movie from an era that didn't need special effects or violence to make a good movie.

Poor quality DVD - Good movie........2006-10-24

If you want a good clear image, you won't be happy with this DVD. I thought I just had a bad one, but as you read the other reviews, you can see that they all have the same problem. I am returning mine. Hope MGM fixes the problem.

John Wayne was in the early stages of superstardom when this lavish Cecil B. DeMille adventure was produced in 1942, so it's interesting to see the Duke in a heroic supporting role as opposed to the commanding one. Here he's on equal footing with Ray Milland in the romantic lead; they play a pair of dashing yet wildly different characters who've both fallen for a feisty Southern belle played by Paulette Goddard. It's 1840 on Florida's Key West, and while Wayne plays a daring seaman eager to command a brand-new steamship, his ambitions are hampered by his daredevil reputation and the ruthless profiteering of a salvager (Raymond Massey) who preys on ships that are routinely wrecked in the Key's rocky coastal waters. Milland plays the dapper gentleman who can decide Wayne's future, but Wayne's competitive edge leads to a progression of apparent betrayals and shifting allegiances. Ultimately, both men cast aside their differences to seek justice on the open sea, where an underwater encounter with a giant octopus threatens to bury them both in a watery grave. Providing spectacle and romance as only DeMille could serve it up, this blustery adventure has its share of corny dialogue and obligatory crowd-pleasing action, but that's all part of the movie's considerable charm. It's like Gone with the Wind on the open sea, with the high-spirited Goddard (who had been a candidate for the role of Scarlett O'Hara) holding her own with her chest-thumping costars. DeMille fills his frame with delightful characters and background business, spicing up the story with just enough humor and hokum to offset the movie's forgivable flaws. Presented in glorious Technicolor that's been flawlessly preserved on DVD, the film earned Oscar nominations for its cinematography and costumes, and its still-exciting climax earned an Oscar for Best Special Effects. All in all, this is rousing Hollywood entertainment from the peak years of the studio system that DeMille had dominated for decades. --Jeff Shannon.

Cecil B. de Mille's typically lavish tale of wrecks and wreckers, Reap the Wild Wind, stars Paulette Godard, Ray Milland, John Wayne and that giant squid. Godard gets to play a Southern belle the way she'd have probably played Scarlett O'Hara had she got it, so we all had a lucky escape there, while Raymond Massey provides the black-hearted villainy as he lures the Duke's honest skipper onto the reefs in more ways than one. There's gorgeous Technicolor photography and some generally impressive special effects work - the studio tank work on the opening wreck is particularly striking - though I could have done without Ray Milland's ventriloquist act with the dog.

Universal's DVD offers a superb transfer which corrects most of the audio problems with their video release.

REAP THE WILD WIND is a great movie. I think it is much better than movies being made now. It has everything-Romance, Adventure, Family, Betrayal, Beautiful scenery and Gorgeous costumes. The acting is great. I especially like Ray Milland. Paulette Goddard, Susan Hayward, Raymond Massey. Robert Preston and the rest of the cast do a great job. I never liked John Wayne after I saw him in this, but if you like him, you will be surprised by his performance. Try this DVD, and you will be glad you did. It would make a great gift to someone who hasn't seen it.

WOW! What can I say about Cecile DeMille,the director that hasn't been said. A wonderful film with two great stars, John Wayne and Susan Hayward. The photography is spectacular, a very well written story and the action is certainly above par. I recommend purchasing this for anyone at just about any age from 10 on up. Why I started at 10 is because it's primarily an adult story, but having said that, you don't have to worry about language, or the scenes.

With a film with John Wayne in it you can't go wrong!

De Mille Sea Epic with John Wayne!.......2006-08-15

People unfamiliar with John Wayne's vast filmography are often
surprised to discover he actually starred in a Cecil B. DeMille
extravaganza, although everybody seems to recall "The Film with the
Octopus" that Wayne made (it was actually a giant squid, but that's
really unimportant). In actuality, DeMille, who early-on saw Duke's
potential, twice attempted to team him with Gary Cooper in his
productions (he had been seriously considered for the role of Buffalo
Bill in "The Plainsman", and as the Mountie Preston Foster ended up
portraying in "North West Mounted Police"). Each time, scheduling
conflicts and studio pressure curtailed the pairings, and one can only
daydream about what might have been...

"Reap the Wild Wind", the one film Duke DID make with DeMille (one
of SEVEN 1942 productions he starred in), while not 'top-drawer', is still a
rousing Technicolor adventure, offering another of DeMille's 'American
history lessons'. A nautical tale set in the Florida Keys in 1840, of
salvage ships, their stalwart captains, and greedy profiteers (embodied
by Raymond Massey and Robert Preston), the film works best when
sticking to the 'physical' action, despite a sparkling performance by
Paulette Goddard as the head of one of two rival salvage companies.

Wayne is a hard-headed, impatient skipper who Goddard rescues and falls
for, but when lawyer Ray Milland arrives on the scene to investigate
Wayne's lost ship, the inevitable 'triangle' develops, with Duke
misreading things, and aligning with rival Massey. Milland, top-billed,
is given the meatiest role (and is excellent), but Wayne, who
eventually comes to his senses, is actually quite good, as well.

Expect little subtlety (this IS a DeMille film!), some 'over-the-top'
performances (Massey's hiss-able villain, Lynne Overman's crusty
sailor), a 'star-in-the-making' turn by young Susan Hayward (who, 14
years later, would again work with Wayne, in the infamous "The
Conqueror"), and the unforgettable (if not quite realistic) climactic
confrontation with the squid (which DeMille plays to the hilt, not
letting audiences know WHO sacrificed his life until the last moment).

"Reap the Wild Wind", while certainly a career 'boost' for the Duke, is
not generally listed among his best films (or DeMille's), but remains
an entertaining time-passer from early in WWII, the heady days of John
Wayne's meteoric rise to superstardom.

It certainly is worth a place in your 'John Wayne' collection of DVDS!

It's good to See John Wayne in a role that is not necessarily the good guy. He could play both sides of the street convincingly.

I am a huge John Wayne fan and highly recommend this movie to anyone that is a Wayne fan.

He contented himself with adding a few characteristic touches--including a spot of bondage (always a Hitchcock favorite)--and slyly sending up the melodramatic absurdities of the plot. Jamaica Inn hardly stands high in the Master's canon, but it trundles along divertingly enough. These films of the 1930s, 1939 in this case, are amazing. Simple acting, yet still quite inspired by silent movies technique. Very simple setting not cluttered with too many useless props and other decorations. The dialogue is necessarily simple and the voice work is a caricature of dramatic speech. It was all recorded directly when the film was shot on a sound stage most of the time and the microphones were still very primitive. So what could you expect? No integrated music, no sound effects or very poor ones, no visual effects of course with most of the time sedentary cameras. And the lighting was still far from particularly brilliant. And yet these films were magic because they did not even try to look real, realistic. They had to work the way the technique dictated it. Then the rest was compensated and supplemented by the imagination of the audience. And the zippers in the backs of the monsters were not bothering anyone at the time since it was such a marvelous improvement to have the puppets on the screen speak in real voices. It is amazing to see such an old film by Hitchcock. He was already a great director who could get some real gripping action or situations even with all the shortcomings of his equipment. We have to watch them again these old films, these first talkies, to ,be able to appreciate what modern films have to offer but also what we have lost along the way, a lot more than we may think, and particularly the magic of black and white illusion. But we can't be and have been at once, that's obvious. So let us be living in our time and nostalgically revisit the past.

"Jamaica Inn" (1939) is remarkable in many ways as almost every movie directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock. It was the last movie he directed in England before he moved to Hollywood. It was his first screen adaptation of the book by Daphne Du Maurier - his next movie, the Oscar winning "Rebecca" is also based on Du Maurier's novel as well as the later "The Birds" (1963). "Jamaica Inn" introduced 18 years old Maureen O'Hara in her first starring role as Mary, a young orphan girl who arrives to stay with her aunt at the inn located at England's Cornish coast around 1820 to quickly find out that the inn is a headquarters of the of the pirate band. Finally, "Jamaica Inn" was the first collaboration of two cinema giants, Alfred Hitchcock and Charles Laughton. While "Jamaica Inn" may be not the best or most memorable Hitchcock's film, nobody would argue that Laughton, a performer of an incredible range stole the movie as Sir Humphrey Pengallon in the performance that mixes "elegant grossness, gallant and sardonic, pure madness, and certain grandeur to his defiance".

Perhaps Atypical but Entertaining Hitchcock Film .......2007-03-07

JAMAICA INN from 1939 was Alfred Hitchcock's last directorial effort from his "British Period" before coming to America to direct REBECCA for David O. Selznick. Interestingly both films are based on Daphne Du Maurier novels. A costume period piece JAMAICA INN attracted Hitchcock because of the Du Maurier angle which would prep him for REBECCA. Alfred Hitchcock was never enamored with costume pieces as he latter admitted to François Truffaut in their famous discussions when refereeing to his ill made choice to direct UNDER CAPRICORN.

Sidney Gilliat and Joan Harrison's screenplay based on Du Maurier's novel seems more conventional and less gothic, if that is an appropriate categorization, than Du Maurier's protraction of her story. This straight forward approach seems to work well for Maureen O'Hara, Charles Laughton and Robert Newton and their roles making the film more intriguing and beguiling and less atmospheric. In all this is a thoroughly entertaining film if somewhat atypical Hitchcock.

Hitchcock performs a massacre of Daphne's book, but somehow, being a talent powerhouse, he makes it work - at least in some places. Daphne's Mary is a dreamy kind of a girl liable to get frightened but not a coward. O'Hara has a strong voice, she is never really frightened, the only time she lets us down ( of course being her first movie) when she calls her Aunt Patience several times - seems contrived. Even when confronted with prospect of rape she never loses her composure and says that she is ready for anything! And a delightful figure!
Of course, Mary falls in love with Joss's brother and not a officer of law as shown in the movie. The hero is quite ugly and it would have been better had be been hanged successfully in the beginning of the film. Charles goes over the top but has a variety of expression in his repertoire which he uses outlandishly and is a delight to watch. Overall, it is still a good entertainment. And particularly for those who have read the book - they must see it.

If sinking your teeth into over-ripe fruit is one of your pleasures, then Jamaica Inn should be your dish. It features one of the ripest and most ludicrous performances I've ever seen from Charles Laughton as Sir Humphrey Pengallan, and that covers a lot of territory. As the squire who is the full-figured mastermind behind a gang of murderous wreckers on the Cornish coast, Laughton sports the latest dandyish fashions, a false nose, false eyebrows which almost have lives of their own, a carefully coifed comb-over, a piggish over-bite and line readings that would make Bette Davis at her most mannered envious. Close behind in the ripe playing sweepstakes is Robert Newton as Jem Trehearne, law officer and hero, who roles his eyes almost as much as Laughton, and Leslie Banks as Joss Merlyn, the leader of the gang and the owner of Jamaica Inn. The only person who manages reasonably well is Maureen O'Hara who plays Mary, the plucky and beautiful niece of Merlyn's wife. Even she is largely confined to earnestly crying out for decency and screaming.

Don't get me wrong. Jamaica Inn is so over-the-top it's a delight to watch, especially when Laughton is chewing the scenery. Hitchcock, making his last movie in England before leaving for the United States, supposedly became so bored during filming that he didn't care what the actors did. The story is a bodice-ripper by Daphne de Maurier; in fact, Maureen O'Hara's bodice gets ripped not once but twice. The time is about 1800. The place is Cornwall on the rocky coast. Jamaica Inn is a stone hulk of a building close by the warning light that shows ships where to avoid the rocks in the stormy seas. Someone with advance knowledge of ships with rich cargos has been blocking the warning light. When the ships founder, wreckers work their way to the ships, slaughter all the sailors and take the cargo. Merlyn and his gang are the heavies, but who is the mastermind? Then young Mary, whose parents have died, shows up late one night at Jamaica Inn's doorstep to be taken in my her aunt, Merlyn's wife. At the same time we learn that the gang has a ringer in its midst, an officer of the law determined to bring justice to Cornwall and identify the mastermind. We also learn (this is no spoiler; we find out very early in the movie) that the mastermind is the effete, mannered Sir Humphrey. It all comes together with madness and murder on the wind, switching from Jamaica Inn and the rain-swept coast to Sir Henry's elegant mansion and his imperious demands. "Listen Merlyn," Sir Humphrey says, "I want money. I know what to do with money when I have it which is why I must have it. Do you understand? I must have it!"

The movie looks great. There are crashing seas, stormy nights and coaches drawn by galloping horses. Jamaica Inn itself has that detailed, threatening look that Hitchcock achieved with the wind mill in Foreign Correspondent. Stone stairways go up and down, nothing fits well, shutters rattle in the wind. The scenery chewing isn't confined to the leads, either. The gang members get their moments, too, especially Emlyn Williams as Harry, an invariably cheery and dirty young man with a knife. The movie rises or falls, however, not on Hitchcock but on Laughton...and Laughton is so ripe he's spellbinding. You have to see him to appreciate his way with these words, spoken to a bound and gagged Mary, "We may be going a long way, you know. Nearer the sun, of course...the Isles of Greece. You're thinking that'll cost money, but I have enough. One must have enough. I always knew that to live like a gentleman, spaciously and with elegance, one must have money...and a few beautiful possessions, of course, like you, my deah." Sir Humphrey's last words bring the movie to a satisfyingly ornate ending: "Make way for Pengallan!"

The movie is in the public domain and there is no good DVD transfer. In addition, some editions have an 8-minute scene missing about 50 minutes into the movie. Look for a run time of approximately 98 minutes, which Image and Kino have.

This has got to be one of the most underrated movies of all time. Granted that it is low,low,low budget (check out the
backdrop of the sky) and Randolph Scott's "youse guys" accent does not exactly fit in Restoration England - the dialogue and Charles Laughton's leering, scheming and sneering are priceless.
"Pop 'im over!" (a pirate's burial at sea).

Not the Sea Hawk or Captain Blood by any means,but still enjoyable.With a cast like Laughton,Carradine and Scott it can't be too bad.Historicaly not very accurate and a little hokey.But then again it doesn't claim to be factual.Laughton is great as the scheaming Kidd and Scott as the hero is his usually heroic self.If you are a fan of this type of film,and i am,you will enjoy this picture.
