Description
Admired and reviled, handsome, vain, pompous and paranoid, but always a soldier, Douglas MacArthur was both hero and villain. Examine this enigmatic portrait of a U.S. general who liberated the Philippines and became occupied Japan's supreme commander after World War II, then led troops to victory at Korea's Battle of Inchon. A national hero, MacArthur recklessly defied a president and was relieved of his powerful command.

There's plenty to like about Hawaii Five-0, the late '60s cop show debuting on DVD by way of this seven-disc set including all episodes from the first season, along with the two-hour pilot that preceded it. Like the music, featuring Morton Stevens' popular theme song. Or the lovely Hawaiian scenery. And let's not forget "Book 'em, Danno," the signature line delivered (although not nearly as frequently as one might expect) by star Jack Lord's Steve McGarrett, not to mention Lord's perfect hair and wrinkle-free slacks. As for everything else, let's just say that Hawaii Five-0 has not aged well. Some of that is inevitably due to the infinitely more sophisticated production values of the series that have followed in its wake; Five-0's technology, sets, and other practical elements are laughably primitive by current standards. Problem is, the cheese factor extends to pretty much every other aspect of the show as well. Most of the action sequences are utterly tension-free, and the pace is frequently glacial, with interminable scenes bogged down by talky exposition. The dialogue is risible: McGarrett refers to one adversary as "a dirty, double-dealing fink," while the so-called hippies who populate the islands utter the kind of idiocies that could only have been written by cubes whose closest contact with the counterculture came from TV commercials for Hai Karate men's cologne ("Looks like splittin' the scene was real cool, baby" is but one egregious example). Lord does a decent job as the stiff-but-heroic McGarrett, variously described as "a hardhead," "an organizational misfit," "a brilliant operator," and "a rebel," but by and large the acting (including guest shots by Sal Mineo, Ricardo Montalban, Gavin MacLeod, and Yaphet Kotto) is wooden. Story-wise, "Cocoon," the pilot, features an intriguing premise wherein U.S. intelligence agents undergo sensory-deprivation torture before spilling their secrets; elsewhere, the elite Five-0 team deals with jewel thieves, gold smugglers, kidnappers, gamblers, murderers, mobsters, all-purpose "criminal masterminds," and even "Red agents" spreading the bubonic plague. In sum: with its light (if not quite frothy) tone, Hawaii Five-0 will offer harmless escapism to some viewers, especially those with a nostalgic bent. Others, however, will long for more substantial fare--you know, like Deal or No Deal. The DVD set includes a single bonus feature: "Emme's Island Moments: Memories of Hawaii Five-O," a retrospective with James "Danno" MacArthur and other cast and crew members. --Sam Graham

Description

Filmed entirely on location in Hawaii, the show followed Jack Lord as he played Steve McGarrett, head of an elite state police unit investigating "organized crime, murder, assassination attempts, foreign agents, felonies of every type." James MacArthur played his second-in-command Danny ("Danno") Williams, with local actors Kam Fong, Zulu, Al Harrington, and Herman Wedemeyer, among others, playing members of the Five-O team.

5 out of 5 stars captions for 5-0.......2007-07-08

Not only are the DVDs excellent, but most of the episodes I've watched so far seem to have had a most excellent captioner as well. When there are spots with background music, most of the episodes have a short description of the music, such as "upbeat theme," "romantic jazzy theme," etc. Highly enjoyable all around. Thank you, unknown captioner!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest police shows ever!.......2007-07-07

I must have seen every episode when this was a television series. Great actors, excellent scripts and wonderful scenery from Hawaii. A great police drama series -every episode is filled with action and adventure. Looking forward to each new issued series.

These DVD's are wonderful. The quality of the picture is great. We really enjoy seeing these older shows again. Would definitely buy the next season.

5 out of 5 stars Book 'Em Danno.......2007-06-18

Lets be honest, if not for Hawaii Five-o, there would be NO Magnum PI. If not for Hawaii Five-O, we would not have such hard driven detective shows that we have had. To praise the first season is easy. These mini movies were complete and complex stories, not like some of the items on TV today.

The stories of the first season were good story telling. It also used one other character, its location..Hawaii. It was not a studio type of production, it was filmed in the 50th state fully. The cast did not dumb down the dialog nor the action and not the location. Note Hawaii may be the back drop, but it was not a sightseeing tour..meaning you saw Hawaii, but the audience was not made as a look at the sites. Hawaii's unique landscape is what made this interesting.

Jack Lord was no Columbo. He was hard as nails team leader. He showed strenghth and conviction is every action and his team backed him. He was nononsense but he also had a heart and you can see it

The first 28 were well due. Bless CBS video for not releasing half sets or best of. Just good Television to enjoy

Book "em Danno, until the rest come out! I want all 12 years if the quality of the DVD release holds up

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. (Ages 5 and older) --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Knew I could find.......2007-06-04

My son loved the movie Swiss Family Robinson when he was little. I have looked for it previously in stores but could not find. I knew we could find it on Amazon. I have told my grandchildren about the movie and the adventures the family has on an island. I got this movie for my son for Father's day so he can share it with his children. The movie is funny, adventurous, and shows so much ingenuity when the family needs shelter. It is a good family movie all will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Our Family's Favorite Classic Stories.......2007-05-11

This DVD contains Disney's adaptation of the original book, Der Schweizerische Robinson, written by author Johann David Wyss, in 1812. It is one of the finer works of Disney, in my opinion. The story of this family's struggles and determination, difficulties and joys is good watching (and good reading) for every member of the family. One of the most delightful aspects of this work is the emphasis placed upon good character, family values, and self-reliance. I recommend this movie to everyone...

5 out of 5 stars Talk about a CLASSIC!!!.......2007-05-10

You can't go wrong here! My siblings and I LOVED this movie as kids. I bought it for my son and daughter when they were younger and again, they LOVED it and watched it (and quoted it) repeatedly. I am now buying it for my young (7ish) nephews to enjoy. Probably my favorite no-cartoon Disney flick of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Family Movie.......2007-04-03

This is an excellent movie. I am so glad I purchased it for my son. I got it for his birthday 7 and at first he didnt really have an interest in watching it, but he was home from school sick one day and we watched it and I couldnt tear him away. He loved it! Its adventure, imagination, and fun all rolled into one.

Based on the book by Lt. Col. Harold Moore (ret.) and journalist Joseph Galloway, We Were Soldiers offers a dignified reminder that the Vietnam War yielded its own crop of American heroes. Departing from Hollywood's typically cynical treatment of the war, writer-director Randall Wallace focuses on the first engagement of American soldiers with the North Vietnamese enemy in November 1965. Moore (played with colorful nuance by Mel Gibson) and nearly 400 inexperienced troopers from the U.S. Air Cavalry were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese Army soldiers, and the film re-creates this brutal firefight with graphic authenticity, while telling the parallel story of grieving army wives back home. While UPI reporter Galloway (Barry Pepper) risks his life to chronicle the battle, Wallace offers a balanced (though somewhat fictionalized) perspective while eliciting laudable performances from an excellent cast. Like the best World War II dramas of the 1940s, We Were Soldiers pays tribute to brave men while avoiding the pitfalls of propaganda. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and it's true..........2007-07-08

While many of the reviews will focus on the story, all I would add is that this starts to put in place a very important turning point in the second Vietnam War..(This movie pays attention to the previous French attempt to fight on this ground). For me one of the most notable and telling scenes from this movie was in the deleted section when Hal Moore met with McNamara and informed him that this was not going to be an easy fight and that it was the wrong fight. This movie and the book stand as a shining example of the courage of the American soldier and the stupidity of their political leaders.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite war movie of all time.......2007-06-27

We were soldiers is my favorite war movie, and that says something because it had to beat out Braveheart, Glory, Gettysburg, BlackHawk Down, WindTalkers and the Great Raid. What makes it so special is the courage and character of Hal Moore. I read the book, and the movie is very accurate. It also teaches me the history of the Vietnam war through the eyes of someone who is not trying to tear this country down. Best movie made about Vietnam by far.

5 out of 5 stars A very gripping, intensely human look at the reality of war........2007-06-26

Mel Gibson does it again, moving well above and beyond the "typical" expectations of the war movie genre. There is not much I can add that hasn't already been said about the story itself. I would just say that the great strength of this film lies in its focus on the soldiers as real people, with real lives, real families, real personalities, etc. Gibson did an excellent job of emphasizing the emotional and psychological trauma of war, both for those in the battle and those waiting at home for news.

This production was gritty, realistic and hard-hitting, similar to the Private Ryan/Band of Brothers standard for graphic portrayal of war violence. Actors like Gibson, Kinnear, and Moore gave extemely believable performances, with Harris Pepper's character only marginally less convincing. Finally, I enjoyed the absence of political commentary or moralizing about the war overall. The only criticism that came across was directed toward the military leaders who put the 7th Cav. in that position in the first place. Beyond that, Gibson just told it like it was. Very well done indeed.

4 out of 5 stars A good movie........2007-06-23

THis movie tells of the men who fough and died in the Vietnam Nam War.

2 out of 5 stars Oh please.......2007-06-18

Super American Mel has actually tarnished reality. He superbly recreates what transpired for the first 2/3rd of the movie. But that unbelievably embarrassing charge that hill ending is so far from the truth that it removes any redeemingvalue from this movie--read the book--see what happens the next day as the "relief" force marches back to camp.

I guess Mel thought that the follow up battle, which was even worse than X-Ray, never happened much like he and his father feel the holocaust never happened.

I know some reviewers have said how they got it right and that is true for the grunts, but what does the movie's John wayne message say to those who died at Albany onboth sides?

Long before Henry Fonda played an irascible patriarch in On Golden Pond, he played an equally crusty family man in this warmly rustic, 1963 drama Spencer's Mountain, based on an Earl Hamner Jr. novel that later inspired the television series The Waltons. Fonda plays Clay Spencer, a fiercely independent, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Wyoming laborer who believes in God but rejects (to his tiny community's consternation) organized religion. Scraping together enough money to build a new house for his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and nine children, Spencer runs into an obstacle to both his plans and family pride when his college-bound son (James MacArthur) romances the daughter of Spencer's boss. Director Delmer Daves whips up a kind of morose schmaltz out of the earnest material, but it's Fonda's grit and heartland integrity that carry the day and establish some self-effacing wit. Some nice features here, including interviews with Fonda and a short documentary, "Spencer's Mountain: Grand Teton Premiere." --Tom Keogh

This is a timeless classic that everyone who has kids - no matter how many - should see. The film is a microcosm of what this country was built on - hard work, independence and self-sufficiency. The backdrop, the Grand Teton mountains, is literally stunning. It looks fake, and nowadays in movies, it would be fake - but not here. Watch this film and you CANNOT be disappointed!

The German offensive in December 1944 became the basis for this all-star Hollywood take on the Battle of the Bulge. Henry Fonda is an officer who predicts the assault, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews are Army brass skeptical of his intuitions, and Robert Shaw (his hair dyed yellow and his eyes glinting with malice) is a German officer leading the tank attack. Shaw is certainly the most compelling thing about the film, especially in his philosophical debates with ambivalent underling Hans Christian Blech. Elsewhere, the movie jumps around to sidebar stories (cowardly James MacArthur becomes a leader, wheeler-dealer Telly Savalas falls in love) while messing around with the historical facts of the battle. There are interesting episodes, such as the Malmedy massacre of American POWs and the Germans' use of English-speaking spies, but overall Battle of the Bulge has the feeling of having been patched together from different scripts. On the physical level the movie comes up short, with the Spanish locations rarely suggesting the wintry misery of the battle, and the use of models and studio sets highly inadequate. A number of war films from this era are compelling on their own terms, but in the wake of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, this one looks antique. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Triumph of storyline over historical accuracy.......2007-06-29

The "Battle of the Bulge" is a big budget war movie predating "Patton" and made long before the CGI-assisted ultra-realistic films like "Saving Private Ryan". It largely succeeds in presenting a decent set of basic characters with some thematic elements to make a reasonably interesting retelling of a fairly complex and prolonged event, namely Hitler's last gasp gamble to fend off defeat on the Western Front in December 1944. Unlike "Midway" (a terrible film), Henry Fonda is given some interesting things to do, and we get to see Telly Sevales before his comedic reprise in "Kelly's Heroes."

It's important to understand that "Bulge" really focuses (using some fictional reference points) on the several opening days of the campaign when a single panzer knifed through the Monshau Gap and achieved an early penetration before being stopped in the rugged hill country well north of Bastogne. The most famous and dramatic episode is only briefly touched on, which was the enirclement of th 101st Airborne at Bastogne by the Fifth Panzer Army (superbly depicted in the middle sections of HBO's "Band of Brotthers") The film gives the impression that the battle at most last a week; in fact, some of the hardest fighting occurred throughout January 1945 as American forces struggled to reduce the bulge.

High points: "Panzerlied" (you will hum this for days to the alarm of your friends) and the "Trojan Horse" German paratroopers who created havoc in rear areas. (The movie does not show the summary execution of the paratroopers caught with American uniforms). The soundtrack is good (really good on home theater) as is the opening battle sequence of tanks storming through the snowy forest. And the " chocolate cake" scene.

Flaws: A few. The Germans get big American tanks, [probably M-48s), the American get little ones. The model work is haphazard; the scene of the model German tank poking its barrel into a model railroad tunnel and blowing up an HO train is laughable. Most of the movie involves, as it should, hills, forests and deep snow, and then when the climatic tank battle occurs using real tanks, it takes place in.... a sagebrush, flat, snow-less desert. Huh? That doesn't like like Belgium to me. And while fun to watch, no self-respecting panzer general is going to line up all his tanks hub to hub to bombard a town, no matter how cool it looks.

It was not necessary to cut corners on equipment: the later "Kelly's Heroes", a WW2 comedy, used real Shermans (lots of countries still used them back then) and some nicely simulated Tigers. If you are going to do a movie based on a tank battle, try harder. I am just not being "nerdular" about this.

So, fun poopcorn fare, but in need of a serious remake if one does not count Band of Brothers. The HD version simply emphasises the flaws.

2 out of 5 stars Battle of the Bulge?.......2007-06-13

In Germany they called this movie The Last battle. Baron Hasso Von Manteuffel was a harsh critic he said it was an insult to both sides and failed to show the conditions and was totaly inaccurate. I agree to call this battle of the bulge is a farce. This all star farce is one of the biggest turkeys ever.

    3 out of 5 stars Robert Shaw's fine performance.......2007-06-05

The first part is not too bad for historical accuracy, but after the that, it's down hill. On the other hand, Robert Shaw make this a good movie. One of his best performances. 5 stars for Robert Shaw, 3 for the movie.

4 out of 5 stars WILDLY HISTORICALLY INACCURATE BUT VERY ENTERTAINING.......2007-05-14

I guess where historical movies go, there has to be a trade-off. You can go for historical accuracy, but wind up with something with the plodding of A Bridge Too Far; or, you can throw out all (or most of) the details and facts and make a roaring fight-the-Germans movie like Battle of the Bulge. Okay, so the movie is filled with holes, and telling the story of the battle through the personal lives of the participating soldiers diminishes the scope of the movie's epic scope; but the performances from all the principle actors are excellent. Henry Fonda is memorable as is Telly Savalas. And the thrilling tank battle at the end (Which didn't happen as it was depicted) is likely the best representation of this form of combat ever done in a movie.

After starring in the now-legendary trilogy of spaghetti Westerns for Italian director Sergio Leone, Clint Eastwood became a box-office star and imported the style of those classic shoot-'em-ups for this 1967 Western directed by Ted Post, with whom Eastwood had worked during their days on the television series Rawhide. Eastwood plays an innocent rancher who is mistaken for a cattle rustler and sentenced to hang by an angry mob. When he is saved from the noose by a passing lawman, he embarks on a renegade campaign of vengeance against the men who attempted to lynch him. Hang 'Em High offers a number of memorable moments and stylistic flourishes, and features a superb supporting cast of Western veterans, including Ben Johnson, Ed Begley, Pat Hingle, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, L.Q. Jones, and the "Skipper" himself, Alan Hale Jr. Made just three years before Dirty Harry, the film marked a turning point for Eastwood, who would soon move into a prolific period of contemporary thrillers. The digital video disc offers standard and widescreen formats and a remastered soundtrack. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

They riddled him with bullets. They strung him up. They left him to die. But they made two fatal mistakes: they hanged the wrong man...and they didn't finish the job. In his first American-made western, Clint Eastwood indelibly carves his niche as the quintessential tough guycool-headed, iron-willed and unrelenting in his pursuit of revenge. Oklahoma, 1873. Jed Cooper (Eastwood), mistaken for a rustler and killer, is lynched on the spot by crooked lawman Captain Wilson (Ed Begley) and a rampaging band of vigilantes. But as Wilson and his gang flee the scene, there's one very important detail they've overlooked: Cooper is still alive! Out for justiceand vengeanceCooper takes on the job of deputy marshal...and, one by one, tracks down the nine men who "done him wrong."

    4 out of 5 stars Eastwood's first Malpaso production. . ........2007-05-10

HANG 'EM HIGH was Clint Eastwood's first production for his Malpaso company, and his first American film after the spectacular successes of the Man With No Name films. It's a tight, well-written revenge western with a great supporting cast (which has been properly documented in other reviews). No extras to speak of on the DVD: just the trailer for the film, and you do have the option of watching in widescreen or fullscreen.

A very good western with just a few slow spots. HANG 'EM HIGH was written and co-produced by Leonard Freeman and Mel Goldberg, just before Freeman went into the production of his TV series HAWAII FIVE-O. When you watch the film, look carefully--there are a few plot threads left dangling. I won't spoil HANG 'EM HIGH for you if you've never seen it before, but upon recent re-viewing, I swear that it's an unsold TV pilot, retooled for feature production. Now, that doesn't mean that the film is below par: it just has the feel and pacing of a two-hour television opener.

A fine addition to any Eastwood collection, HANG 'EM HIGH is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood - Hang 'em High movie DVD.......2007-04-12

A Must have for all Clint Eastwood's classic spaghetti western fans.

    4 out of 5 stars a should-be-better western fell flat by a deteriorated screenplay.......2007-04-06

it was when the mass hanging scene was stupidly inserted two , not just one, long church hymns, with a cardboard-like preacher on the gallows to conduct the crowd to sing them, and a condemned-by-hanging rapist kept monologuing about 10 minuntes to synchronize those two hymns, this movie was beginning to fall flat miserably.
the other ridiculous and illogic part was when the marshal escorted the two young rustlers and that murderer back to where the hanging judge resided, why he suddenly had to take a route across a vast desert instead of going back by the original path where the posse came from? there's no way and no excuse to make such stupid arrangement simply just because the director and the screenplay writers wanted to show how difficult and tough the marshal got to do a heroic dead-man-walking mission, then turned himself out for the next lame a-hero-was-born scene.
there were wonderful moments of this film, but it started to drag along and lag behind gradually. it often gave you an impression that both the screen writers and the director didn't have a clue how to make this movie going, they could only asked clint eastwood, the marshal, to do lot of unnecessary hollow scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Individual vs. Collective Crime and Punishment.......2007-03-17

Clint Eastwood's 1967 debut in an American western after successfully starring in Sergio Leone's internationally reknown trilogy of westerns that made him a star.

The screenplay is a more sober portrayal of the western genre without the surreal motifs portrayed by Leone. The film follows Eastwood's character who was wrongly accused of being a cattle rustler and lynched by mob of thugs. Out for revenge, Eastwood nevertheless wants to do it by the law and is deputized as a marshall by a judge who needs new necks to hang from his gallows to give his town the semblance of order. Accepting the assignment, Eastwood's character tracks down his past attackers one by one. Eastwood's character also seeks the affections of a woman who seeks revenge against those who raped her and murdered her husband.

This is a good western in which the characters and their motivations are well developed. As one reviewer mentioned, this film explores the concepts of personal vs. collective retribution against past wrongs and the personal conflicts they entail. The story explores the notions of what is crime and what is proper punishment. It explores how barbarism and lawlessness are treated where legal instututions are lacking and span as far as the boundaries of a small frontier town. It looks at how rampant crime and the absence of law generate both a sense of injustice and an overzealous desire for retribution. The film also explores the consequences of crimes committed by groups in which the perpetrators differ by intent and degree in their participation. Who is really more to blame? The only down side to this film is that the ending is somewhat abrupt and rather empty in light of the climax of the story. Otherwise, this is a good film worth owning or renting.

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome Eastwood.......2007-01-19

Not the best Eastwood film I've seen, but it still is a pleasure to watch. Eastwood is the best western actor that I've seen and he doesn't disappoint here.

4 out of 5 stars MacArthur deserved a longer film.......2007-06-24

Beautifully filmed, but MacArthur, an epic American general, should have been a 3-hour film instead of the 130 minutes they sliced it into. I kept sensing they had cut scenes. Fux pas: Gregory Peck (1) points to Lingayen Gulf in Luzon and vows to land at Leyte, (2) salutes President Truman at the 1950 Wake Island meeting when we all know MacArthur infuriated Truman by failing to salute, and (3) keeps saying "please" when he gives orders. I just can't imagine General MacArthur saying "please" as he barks the commands. But overall, a good film.

5 out of 5 stars I am proud to be the best general and I am right.......2005-06-17

This movie about the military carreer of General Douglas MacArthur from 1941 to 1953 is a very good one. You may like him or not but it not important. You may agree or disagree with his decisions but he has taken them. He was a great general and he was sure that he was always right. So, look at one of the mightest general of the U.S. Army. Is is a very good movie.

5 out of 5 stars "Duty, Honor, and Country...".......2004-10-15

The movie "MacArthur", played by the great Gregory Peck, mainly takes place between the years 1942 through 1952, from MacArthur as a four star general to when he `retires' in the wake of Eisenhower's presidency. The movie takes you through MacArthur's historic events: leaving Corregidor, arriving in Australia saying those never to be forgotten words 'I shall return', island hopping back to the Philippines, on through the Korean War, then ultimately his retirement.

I cannot express in words how wonderful Peck's portrayal of MacArthur was. He WAS Douglas MacArthur in every sense of the man. He played the part of the historic figure perfectly; where he was beloved by people, yet at times could be so agressive, straightforward, and outspoken that he made people clench their teeth in annoyance of that man (how do you think he got the nickname, 'American Caesar'?). A truly gifted actor, Greogry Peck will forever fill my memories of 'THE actor who played one of the greatest men of all time.'

Setting aside Peck's performance, a few other honorable mentions are Marj Dusay as MacArthur's wife and Ed Flanders respectfully as Harry S. Truman. Dusay had few lines but instead, through her quiet courage and determination in standing by her husband's side shows indeed the importance she played as the faithful wife. Ed Flanders deserves much applause for his role as President Truman with a splendid performance as one of the many men who, though he hates MacArthur's guts, can't help admiring his military genius.

In the historical point of view, I felt that "MacArthur" was fairly accurate, especially the depictions of the Korean "Conflict" (War). It portrayed just how much of a 'political' war it had begun, especially with the Chinese making it into an international incident.

As for myself being half American-Japanese living in Japan, it was quite interesting to see how MacArthur began the reformation of Japan after WWII. I was also quite impressed with Yuki Shimoda playing the Prime Minister of Japan, and how he gave MacArthur full support in making sure that Japan could not again build a military force. That meeting between the Prime Minister and MacArthur was very touching to me.

After watching the film, I also couldn't help but feel somewhat sad seeing how the world has changed from the circumstances of the past. After the Korean War, where communism was allowed to take hold of North Korea, the situation between North Korean and Japan is now somewhat strained, what with various incidents including kidnapping and illegal transportations. It is sad to see in the movie how this would have been prevented if MacArthur had been given leeway to finish the Korean War with a sound victory instead of the unforgivable option, the "armistice."

All in all this is a wonderful movie that shouldn't be missed. There is one warning I would like to add which a few reviewers have also mentioned. The film is somewhat 'choppy' as in the plot moves along pretty swiftly. Unless you are very well informed about the years in which the movie takes place, there is a high possibility you would be lost as to what is going on. My suggestion is either 1) watch the movie with someone who understands the history of that time well, or 2) study the history before watching the movie. I can guarantee though that after watching "MacArthur", curiosity will overcome you and make you want to read more about those years.

*Rated PG for some war violence. But in any case, best watched by older teens and adults so that they know what is going on. I guess this will lean more towards being a 'guy' movie, though for any girl (like me) who loves good acting and is interested in history will most definitely like this movie*

4 out of 5 stars Great Gregory Peck Perfomance Is Crippled By Poor Screenplay.......2004-08-22

The 1977 film of MacArthur is worth watching for the towering performance of Gregory Peck as General Douglas MacArthur. Peck considered this one of his favorite roles and fought with the producers over the screenplay and editing of the film -- and fought he should have because those very flaws kept this movie from being a great film.

MacArthur lead a long, dramatic and heroic life during World War I, World War II and the Korean War. As a vain and brilliant military genius who believed in his own destiny, the movie focuses on the decade 1942-1952. The film feels like MacArthur's greatest hits: the set pieces of Bataan, "I shall return", his rulership of Japan, the Inchon landing in Korea, "The Old Soldier" speech before Congress and so forth WITHOUT pulling the various scenes together into a coherent whole. According to Peck, the original three hour version fleshed out MacArthur more before it was edited down to the 130 minute commerial version.

Without prior knowledge of MacArthur's life, the movie would be confusing and lacking in the richness that was MacArthur's life. As one example, the various military situations are dealt with superfical, briefly and often without maps, so that one does not see the strategic brilliance of his Pacific campaigns. I highly recommend reading William Manchester's "MacArthur" before seeing the film.

Should you see the movie? Yes, even a MacArthur at half speed is more interesting than most movies and Gregory Peck IS MacArthur. He was passed over for an Oscar nomination although that was interpreted at the time as more of a comment on the film itself than upon his acting. It is worth seeing for Peck's performance in and of itself.

5 out of 5 stars "duty, honor, country".......2004-07-01

Those that are interested in General Douglas MacArthur, and admire his qualities of courage and fortitude, will find this film fascinating; it is beautifully filmed, with marvelous re-creations of the mid 20th century, and the battle scenes are very well done.
The speeches alone are a glory to listen to, full of passion for "duty, honor, and country", and the words are so exquisitely crafted they are like the finest prose.
The film starts and ends in MacArthur's beloved West Point, on a blustery day, as he speaks to the cadets, and is among the many memorable scenes; others are the landing on Layte, and the signing of Japan's surrender, on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, which is a fabulous re-staging of the historic event.

Gregory Peck gives a monumental portrayal of MacArthur; it is nuanced and brilliant, and from the old film clips I have seen of General MacArthur, subtly captures his posture and movement, with his many different pipes. This film is one of Peck's best, and it's sad it did not have more critical acclaim, as I feel it certainly deserved it.
Other terrific performances come from Marj Dusay as his wife Jean, Sandy Kenyon as General Jonathan Wainwright, and Ed Flanders as President Truman is quite exceptional; tough, gritty, and angered by MacArthur.

An excellent score by Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography by Mario Tosi complements the well-paced direction by Joseph Sargent. If it has a flaw, I feel the film makes too much of the publicity loving aspect of MacArthur's personality. Yes, he liked to use the media to his advantage, and most people who make history feel the same way no doubt...otherwise it is a fairly balanced depiction of one of the great men of the 20th century.

It is interesting to speculate what would have happened had General MacArthur been able to do what he thought was right, and not the "capitulation" and "immoral compromise with evil" he felt he was forced to accept. Perhaps over time millions of lives would have been saved, but I'm sure many would argue otherwise.
    Total running time 130 minutes.
"A soldier above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war".

This 1983 science fiction oddity, set in the subterranean world of heroin addicts, performance artists, and androgynous models in New York's East Village, became a staple of the midnight movie circuit and college campus film societies. A tiny UFO lands on the roof of a grungy penthouse apartment inhabited by androgynous model Anne Carlisle and her drug-dealing lover Paula E. Sheppard (the former child star of Alice, Sweet Alice). As explained with deadpan gravity by hilariously naive alien hunter Otto Von Wernherr, the UFOs congregate in areas of intense heroin concentration and feed off the highs of addicts. This alien has found a better high: orgasms. Russian émigré Slava Tsukerman's punk sci-fi feature takes the alien in alienation seriously, charting the mental disintegration of Carlisle as every sexual partner dies in climax and she turns herself into a heroine-chic angel of death. Easily the strangest to come out of the New York indie explosion of the early '80s, this low budget classic is talky and overlong at almost two hours, but remains an imaginative use of bargain-basement effects (heat aura photography, stop motion animation) for a tale of a most unusual alien encounter. Tsukerman co-composed the minimalist electronic score (in the Laurie Anderson vein). Carlisle, who cowrote the film, also appears as a surly gay male model. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully special and brave still.......2007-04-06

this film is gripping and stunning. the director made some very brave choices and manages with the few effects and little finance he had to create an intense experience. in the end it's all up to one's fantasy and imagination and not the budget!!

2 out of 5 stars Wha? huh? oh........2007-03-28

Other reviews for this movie led me to believe that it was going to be something amazing, something I have never seen before, something that I would either love or hate. It was none of these things. It was weird, that's for sure, but it was hardly interesting. The soundtrack alone was enough to make me want to watch the movie muted. But then all I would have been left with would have been the visuals, and I couldn't do that to myself. The lens tricks were disorienting and the color scheme was simply offensive, though I suppose I understand what they were trying to do with the wacky makeup. If I had to pick something that WAS interesting about this movie, it would be the scene in which the two characters, one male, one female, but both played by the same actress, square off in a sexually charged argument before the female character disapears below frame and makes the male character "die" in the Victorian and literal sense of the word. But this is only interesting because it's the same actress playing both parts. Otherwise, it would have been just more of the same psuedo-philosophical nonsense about what is beauty, what is fame, what is sex, blah, blah, blah...

The one guy does look a lot like Norm McDonald, though. That was kinda funny. Particularly when he's feining for more heroin.

Brilliant C movie at it's finest! Manhattan in the days of the New Romantic era, what could be more depressing? Death by orgasm controlled by alien life form, how insane is that? The fashion is the best with the perfect musical score to go with it. Margaret and Jimmy, what a perfect couple, yet they're the same person!

3 out of 5 stars odd film, not what i expected.......2007-01-14

saw this in 1991 and thought it was a cool flick. couldn't remember much about it (inebriated) so bought it the other day to watch again. i made it thru the first 20-30 minutes before turning it off. the person from whom i bought it packaged it and sent it out to me immediately. it was just an artsy, fartsy, surrealistic, sci-fi movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Delicious, delicious.......2006-12-11

Sex, drugs, androgyny, fashion, nihilism, and aliens from outer space--a post-modern riff on the verb "to f*ck," and a postcard from the counter-culture on what they did while Reagan was president. In 1983 it all made sense.

Margaret's face-painting monologue, delivered in deadpan--"I'm from Connecticut. Pilgrim stock"--is the saddest, most profound depiction of loneliness and alienation, of rejecting roles you were expected to play and ending up with nothing except a mysterious ability to kill people with your vagina.
